octolings and suckers
when drawing splatoon characters, i initially drew inkfish tentacles as they appear in game, using a lot of the models as reference in order to get the shapes just right, but as i continued drawing, i decided that this didn't mesh too well with my style. instead of only looking at the in game models, i started looking at actual cephalopods for reference when it came to drawing inkfish "hair."
this immediately presented a bit of a problem when it came to octolings and the suckers on top of their tentacles.
my first thought when approaching the suckers was to interpret them as a sort of shorthand, and that there were a lot more suckers on the top of these tentacles than was depicted... and this immediately presented problems.
Tumblr media
[ID: a picture of an octopus, positioned in a way that shows off the many suckers on the underside of its arms. End ID]
there are a LOT of suckers on an octopus's arms. while plenty of species have bright coloring on the skin around the suckers, there are just so many suckers that they'd wash out the tentacles pretty significantly if i drew them at this density.
it's also fair to assume that there are also suckers on the bottom side of an octoling's tentacles? it's just an off white down there, and aside from countershading, which i'm not sure would be particularly relevant when the tentacles are where hair would go on a human, i don't see why they'd be white otherwise. plus, there are actually suckers modeled on the bottom side of an octoling's swim form
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of the bottom of an octoling's swim form. There are two suckers modeled on the two largest arms. End ID]
while the inconsistency of how octoling swim forms are modeled in game is something i could (and might) write another entire post about, i feel like the fact that the suckers are modeled on this model implies that they do have suckers on the bottom side of their tentacles.
there's a whole slew of arguments that could be made about how practical having suckers on the top of tentacles would be, but i don't really want this to be a post about how octolings make no sense or whatever. looking at it from a design standpoint, i understand why octolings have suckers on the top side of their tentacles. it's a distinctive look that easily sets them apart from inklings, and it fits the splatoon style fairly well. what it doesn't particularly suit, however, is my art style.
it'd be fairly easy to say that there are only a few suckers on the top side of an octoling's tentacles and that the rest are underneath, but honestly i'm not a huge fan of how that looks, especially when drawing the suckers fairly realistically, i'm just not a huge fan of the shape when they're both fairly isolated and large.
Tumblr media
[ID: a close up look of a Giant Pacific Octopus's suckers, showing their almost mushroom-like shape. End ID]
because of all this, instead of suckers, i've decided to interpret the spots on octoling tentacles as eye spots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: three images of octopus eye spots. They are black to dark brown spots with lighter rings of color in them. End ID]
many species of octopus irl have eye spots, and beyond the typical function of making the octopus look bigger, the eyes also mislead predators into attacking one of an octopus’s arms instead of its body. considering the fact that there is a fairly large population of sapient severed tentacles around, i feel like octolings having more adaptions relating to the loss and regrowth of tentacles would make sense.
Tumblr media
[ID: a drawing of an octoling's eye spot from the top and the side. They have two dark rings, one encircling the entire spot and the other fitting quite snugly inside. Both rings are much thicker on one side, and the smaller ring is incomplete. The side view shows that the eye spot is slightly raised. End ID]
i tend to draw these eye spots like this, which resembles the original “suckers” a fair bit more than the eyespots on current octopuses. while this is definitely in part to preserve the general established look octolings have, i think there is at least some merit for the change.
like humans, it’s very likely that octolings evolved to have smaller irises in order to allow those in a social group to be able to tell where their peers are looking. they had also, of course, gotten their mask at some point, which would make their real eyes much more prominent than the often well camouflaged eyes on many species of octopus, especially those with eye spots.
though eye spots don’t inherently have to look anything like an animal’s actual eyes, since their actual eyes became more prominent, i think it makes sense that eye spots that look like their actual eyes (read: more white space), that instead of making a predator think that the eye spots are the one and only pair of eyes, the eye spots instead confuse the predator by giving them multiple targets, which also may be why there are often more than two eye spots on hair tentacles.
did i come up with all of this just to figure out how i wanted to draw octolings? maybe, but i thought it'd be interesting to others out there.

heya I just saw the post about the tory government trans country blacklist, what can I do to oppose this (I am a citizen of the UK)
i mean there's already been a many years long campaign for self-id, which would make the list of approved countries for automatic grc approval redundant. i suppose if you want to oppose that specific policy then you could just involve yourself in the existing campaign for self-id—i'm not sure if "keep the limited list of countries where if you get gender recognition in that country you get an automatic british grc, but just don't remove countries from that list, and don't implement self-id either" is a campaign that would get much traction lol.
but also i think the gra reform campaign should be lower down on the list of priorities of the trans liberation movement, like my birth certificate doesn't really impact anything in my life and that's the only thing a grc would change. a female grc would make it easier for me to be placed in a female prison which is important, although a grc is neither a requirement for nor a guarantee of being placed in a gendered prison matching your identity, and i would rather prison placement didn't depend on grc status than just give out grcs more easily (i would also rather prisons didn't exist, or as more immediate reformist measure, prisons were desegregated, but the latter is probably nearly just as hard to fight for as abolition so you may as well not bother).
i do have a lot of things to say about trans organising in britain but it's hard to discuss on tumblr bc much of it ties into my own organising i've been doing throughout my life and i don't want that tied to my tumblr account lol. i guess i can say, definitely get organised in some way. if you're in a union you can push for pro-trans policies in your union (and possibly pro-trans campaigns impacting trans workers or service users in the sector you work in). and get in touch with trans people near you to start doing some irl organising, starting with more local campaigns. like is there a transphobic gp practice near you? could you organise a campaign to get them to agree to do bridging prescriptions? do you live near a gic you could do some kind of organising around? alternatively there's the more antifascist organising which some groups do, which personally i think are a poor strategic decision to invest time and effort into, but i know some people will prefer that and it's better than doing nothing, so if your local group wants to do that (and knows what they're doing—obviously confronting fascists is dangerous), you could do that. even like a stickering campaign is possible as just something to get started with a local group. i know all that is not about the blacklist but for the blacklist the most relevant thing would probably be self-id like i said at the start, but also like i said i don't think that should be a priority for the trans lib movement.

♡ hi !!! this is my otome blog :o) my about and dni are under the cut ! please at least read my dni before following / interacting ♡
DNI:
♡ MINORS. even if you're 17, almost 18— i don't care. if you're under 18 years old, do not interact. my blog is generally sfw, but i share posts from a lot of people who aren't comfortable with minors interacting. also, if i ever post the occasional suggestive thing, i don't feel comfortable with minors interacting with it. please respect my boundaries and those of my friends. thank you.
♡ typical dni stuff (racists [this includes people who get pissy about artists of color drawing characters as nonwhite!!!], antisemites, ableists, trans/homophobes [this includes terfs and truscum/transmeds!!!], ace/aro exclusionists, etc.). of course i know these people aren’t going to respect boundaries, this point is more of a statement that i don’t want this on my blog and if you see anything like this on here let me know because i probably just didn’t realize the issue with it - but i’m always willing to learn
♡ proshippers/anti-antis/pedos and their apologists.
♡ people who ship irl people [for example, dni if you ship the youtubers dan and phil] [if you selfship with irl people and interact i probably just won't follow back or whatever. i don't mean in like a "celebrity crush" way, i mean like... post selfship content about irl people, if that makes sense.]
♡ adults who age up minors to ship with them, or anyone who makes nsfw content of minors
♡ this blog will generally be sfw, but if anything suggestive comes up it will be tagged as #suggestive or #nsfw [or "#nsfw text" if relevant]
♡ don’t interact if you have a problem with selfshipping or support cringe culture! i’m here to have fun! also this is an otome blog why are you here lmao
ABOUT ME:
⚝ hi! you can call me finn, olivia, or really any nickname lol. i'm also currently trying out the name milo so that works too. my main is @caladir
⚝ 21 (birthday feb 26)
⚝ they/he
⚝ white and tme
⚝ demisexual bi + genderfluid + polyam
⚝ i am incredibly strong and powerful
⚝ it is a-ok to use my art as a profile picture or things like that! just make sure to credit me somewhere, a link back to my blog (either here or @finiel works) :-)
⚝ feel free to ask me about anything i post on here, like my mcs or headcanons or ocs! i’m always willing to talk!!! especially if it’s about hnkna. please
⚝ this blog will probably be a lot of reblogging, but i’ll post my otome related art here as well! my general art blog is @ finiel if you’re interested in seeing more. i also have a general selfship blog, if you’re interested in seeing that dm me!
⚝ I AM CRITICAL OF ALL MY INTERESTS
⚝ if i ever post something gross here please feel free to dm me or send me an ask! however if you’re going to make accusations against someone (ie an anonymous ask saying “xyz is a p*do”) i’m going to need to see some kind of proof. i won’t just spread that shit about someone based on hearsay
⚝ if you ever need something tagged, send me a dm or an ask saying so and i will do my best to tag it. just a disclaimer though, if it's like instances of a certain word you need tagged, i'm not always the best at remembering to tag it, because my brain can just kind of skim over stuff like that. also please note that on this blog as well as my others, i will probably use the word "queer" in a reclaimed sense at some point, as it is how i refer to myself and my own complicated experience with gender and sexuality. if the thing you need tagged is something i post about untagged very often, it’s probably better if you just don’t follow
⚝ if you ever need something reformatted for accessibility, please let me know! i'm trying to get better at adding image ids to my art, so if you have any pointers or suggestions on how i might do it better, i would love to hear them.

how I organize my DM notes using OneNote
a few people said they were interested in seeing how i organize my notes for the games that i run, and let’s be honest, that’s all i need to make a huge informative post. (to my players, you can look! i’ve crossed out info you shouldn’t have lol)
i use OneNote, which i *think* you can use for free online even if you don’t have microsoft. could be wrong on that though. anyway, details and screenshots are under the cut!
here are the sections i split everything into:
Tumblr media
[ID: a menu bar showing different tabs that say Players, NPCs, World, Calendar, Sessions.]
“Players” is the least completed session for my online game because my players have uploaded their character sheets to Roll20 so I got lazy about copying that info over. but normally, this section is split into different pages for each of my players, and will have the player’s contact info, as well as their character sheet, etc. but really, the only important part of the character sheet, for my purposes, is their backstory and passive perception and insight modifiers. I will also note their relationships with NPCs here (as you’ll see in the NPC section), and keep track of their renown with various factions (i do a homebrew renown-tracking thingy to keep track of friends and enemies of the party).
next is NPCs!
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of a particular NPC’s page, Z’ress Matyl. A lot of it has been blacked out lol.]
I used to keep track of EVERY SINGLE NPC this way but it got overwhelming fast, so I only put notable NPCs here (either famous ones, ones that i expect will be around a bit, or ones my PCs will fight/fight with). i use this section to quickly remind myself who the NPC is, their class/race/alignment, what they look like, their personality and a short backstory if applicable. you can also see the little table where i keep track of relationships, and that’s how I track PC relationships too. if relevant, i keep the NPC’s statblock here as well. once i’ve created more NPCs for this campaign, i’ll organize the pages into subpages by family/faction, but i’m not quite there yet with this one!
now onto World!
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of the World tab, which includes sections titled: Sirona history, Pantheon, Dal Z’har, Iesma Empire, and World notes along with a lot of town names for each of the areas. The main text on the screen is about a small town called Sweetvale.]
as the name suggests, i keep most worldbuilding info here, including detailed info about the towns and cities the PCs visit or have been to. some towns (like Sweetvale!) have more detail than others. i also keep larger world info in this section: world history/conflicts, the pantheon and origin stories of the gods (i have a homebrewed pantheon so that’s why it’s necessary), and overarching themes and shit that are relevant to the campaign. this is also a place where i’d keep maps for my own reference if i were more organized. “World Notes” is where i furiously type ideas as they pop into my head, to later develop. i wish i could show you that section, it’s buckwild and has a lot of exclamation points, but it’s very spoilery.
onto the calendar!
Tumblr media
[ID: the calendar tab, showing pages for the months Gelus, Tabeo, Imber, Flos, Lux, Sol, Ardor, Messis, Folium, Stella, Nox and Hiberius, all in 52 AC. The main text on the screen shows the days of the month in a table with notes of what happened on each day. The days of the week are Moonday, Treeday, Waterday, Thunderday, Fireday, Starday and Sunday.]
as you can see, i use a homebrewed calendar because of course i do. full disclosure: i stole most of those week day names from another DM because i love them. but basically the calendar for this world is a 12-month year, 28 day-month, 7 day-week, so it’s kept similar to our IRL calendar. this is where i keep my primary notes of what happens in each session. they’re brief, because 1) i have a pretty good memory for the hijinks the party gets up to, and 2) i put a lot of detail into the plans for each session so i feel like i can go more minimalist here. the most important things i note for each session are: where the party went, if they met any NPCs, the fights they had and if they obtained any special or magical items. i also use the calendar to keep track of full moons, world events and holidays in the world.
next up is Sessions!
Tumblr media
[ID: The Sessions tab, showing a page titled “Adventures” with links to three adventures listed. On the side panel, there are sections called Adventures, Current Adventure, Campaign Notes, session ideas and Tech shit.]
Adventures” is where I keep all the notes for past adventures (See below). I link to each paragraph (a feature of OneNote) so i can easily click and get to what i need to see. the “Current Adventure” page is where i keep notes for, you guessed it, the current session, just to minimize how much i need to scroll, and at the end of the session i cut/paste everything that we got to into the Adventures section. Campaign notes and session ideas are, again, where i furiously type notes that make no sense and need to be edited and expanded upon, haha. And Tech shit is where I put the order of stuff i need to plug in for my online sessions. i’m kind of a dummy.
below is an example of my session prep notes:
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of text showing detailed notes of Adventure 1.]
this is just to give you an idea of how detailed my notes are. they are typically this detailed, if not more so. but i know lots of DMs will basically type out a hook and a resolution and leave the middle blank for notes. it’s really up to you and how you best prep and run sessions. i err on the side of over-preparing because it’s who i am, and when i try to go into a session with less preparation, i feel overwhelmed lol. i occasionally add a few notes here and there as we play in this section, but as i said, keep most of my notes to the Calendar section.
you can also see above how i list NPCs that i expect my players to only briefly interact with. Name, age, appearance, a few notes about personality/motivation, and that’s it. OneNote is cool because you can search for specific words and phrases and it’ll search the whole notebook, so i can easily find these NPCs again if i need to. (note: normally my notes wouldn’t be this....structured? as in, they’ll be less linear than this typically, but this was for the first session where i knew which PCs i’d be introducing first, etc. don’t want you to think i’m a big old wet blanket DM.)
and that’s it! hopefully this is useful for some of you, or at least gives you ideas for how you might organize your game moving forward. IMO the most useful sections are the World, Calendar and Session sections: they’re what i reference and add to the most. let me know if you have any questions!

Rate everyone in the chaos gc's feral-ness? (You don't have too!)
o shit o shit what are 1-10 scales idfk here we go I guess
we gon go in the order they are in on the server screen rn cus my brain is made of swiss cheese and if I tried to remember everyone authentically id forget someone and whether they would tease me or not is questionable but *I* would never be able to let *myself* live that down.
@no-one-told-you-life-was-gay talks a lot of feral but I would say is mostly Big Protecc and sometimes a bit of a pot-stirrer. lotta steam and kettle whistling but xey’re mostly just warm and cuddly, sorry, I’m here to fuck up your reputation. big softy, big cares about friends and platonic spouses, does threaten murder or resurrection if relevant but most of the feral comes from the angst aus, and those tend to be more sad than feral. 8/10 high, 5/10 during sofd moments.
@riseoftherose is *b i g  s o f t* and sweet but also she’s the one who full name-drops and it *works* and that says something. not so Feral as just plain Powerful but there is a strength there and it is a thing to behold. mostly reactive to the feral behavior on the chat, not an instigator. i have seen her be feral, sorta, but its a rare occasion and usually has something to do with irl situarions. very interesting when it happens though! 2/10.
@p0p-r0x75 is a feral jack-in-the-box. silent for hours, no reaction. suddenly a pile of art appears out of the blue and the characters within are in amazingly angsty positions and all Rox will say is :))) and youre just left there spinning worrying about these poor Links and what the fuck have you done to them Rox what is vaati doing what have you d o n e??? and if you like the Zelda franchise and get him talking there is an absolute treasure trove of knowledge in that head and it is beautiful. 4/10.
@todorokitops is feral but like only from certain angles. like those 3d puzzles that when twisted suddenly become a bird. generally sweet and kind and gentle and fluffy and then BAM blizzard bakudeku pops up out of the blue, or fantasy spinner has had his wings and tails fucking chopped off for a lover who let him and you’re just like, wait, Wait, everything was ok and now i’m in emotional agony what the f u c k but also its beautiful and you *will* be back begging to be hurt again. also the sheer number of posts made with the shigaraki tupper has to count for some amount of feral. 6/10.
@ragingfangirl666 is a *b a b e y* and i want to hold her. she does get feral, and is a welcome member of owo jail from time to time! she also has, i think, 20 goddamn tuppers and you have to be a feral beast to keep up with that kind of nonsense. also somehow pumps out amazing quantities of fanart for the roleplays so fast its relevant to whats being actively written still and that's. that's godlike. 6/10
@jinx108 is subtly feral. stealth feral. quiet feral. its there, but you gotta look, and sometimes its v v secret. she likes to ask questions and make statements just to see what happens. she’s got a huge heart and when she gets excited about something she’s Really excited, and its so fun to watch her get going! 3/10.
@sergeantpurrito is mom. she is mum. she is the mother. she is not the feral, she cares for the feral. she is Good and Stable. lil bit of a fellow dice gremlin though, so little bit of feral cus Dice. 1/10
@pufftheminidragon is mai owo pawtnew in cwime and ai wowouwd defewnd ‘dem to da deaff! my wowondewfuww jaiwmate, my excewent fwiend, da one who maed da au wiff da fouw bad ends and da two good ends and we aww picked bad ends. Puffle da magnificent weed dwagon is a sowid 8/10 when peaking, and a 4, maybe 5/10 most of the time.
@friendly-neighborhood-pan is my child and i love them with my whole heart and i will defend them forever and ever and they are blessed and they are such a cryptid holy shit. all the feral in this baby is the mystique surrounding them, are they there? do they see you? are they lurking? are they working on a masterpiece to stealthdrop at three am? who knows! a mystery, all the time. but also babey. but also completely baffling. 8-9/10.
theres a couple more i could add but theyre kinda on the edges so like. i’ll add them later if asked? maybe? if i know them well enough?

hi, id love to know more abt the metal parts of your armor! i saw a post abt you adjusting your helmet, does that mean you know how to make all of that yourself? if you wanna be detailed as hell, be my guest, please! ive been curious abt medieval style fighting for a little while, it seems fun, but even if i dont do it, i still have cosplay im working on that requires armor, so knowing how to at least make it look realistic would help me a lot! links to tutorials would already be a huge help!
that's super cool! so I'm not necessarily the best person to ask, there are other folks who are way more into making their own armor. but I'll do my best. First thing, if you're interested in doing medieval style fighting, you should see if there's an SCA branch in your area! There are also other armored combat groups, but I don't know as much about them. At least where I live, if you know what branch you're in, if you look them up on facebook there's probably a local fighter fb group. Join that, and especially if you let someone know ahead of time so they can bring loaner gear, you can probably just… show up to a practice and people will help you get set up and loan you some armor and teach you the basics. If you don't have facebook, look up the local SCA branch and email the chatelaine (their job is to welcome newcomers), or any other relevant official. Say that you're interested in learning heavy fighting (assuming that's what you're interested in? heavy fighting is wacky-wacky, what I do. rapier fighting is swishy-poky, more like fencing), and ask them about fight practices in your area, and who to contact about loaner gear. They'll get you set up. Once you've been to a fight practice or two, you've tried it out with loaner armor, if you've made up your mind that this is something you want to do, you can probably just talk to the people you've met at practice and they'll be happy to help you get your own armor figured out. Now, because of quarantine, irl practices aren't happening rn. But the facebook groups are still pretty active! So if you can find the fb groups for your local sca branch and the fight practices in your area, you can introduce yourself and ask your questions on there. I'll give you a quick run-down on what I know… Most of my armor is leather, which is a bit easier to work with, especially with limited tools. Basic principles for working with leather is, you get it wet (move it around a bit under the water to make sure it soaks in all the way), shape it into the form you want, and then set it up so it'll dry in the right shape. Then you dye it if you're going to do that thing, then wax it. Then you stitch it, by poking or drilling holes in it and then sewing it with sinew. You'll need to know how to set a rivet, that's easy enough to look up on youtube. Simple sandwich rivets are fine for most things, actual rivets with washers are good for when you need something more heavy-duty. Most of the metal bits I bought online. Helms are hard to make yourself. With the shoulder and knee bits, you could do it yourself, but it's a bit of a pain. Doing some poking around online, r/sca has some good resources, there's a thread that's pretty similar to your question right here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sca/comments/2x89pa/how_do_you_guys_make_armor_specifically_metal_and/ and I found an old forum with a lot more resources: http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/ and for specific skills, like "how to set a rivet" or "how to dish metal", youtube is really useful. @sca-nerd might be able to refer you to more info? Good luck!

PSA for Roswell people
Hey all!
So we’ve started to get solid, official season 2 content fucking finally and that means it’s time for my “fandom disclaimer”. This is for all the new folks and for everyone who might need to know the kinds of stuff I put on my blog.
First off, hi! I mostly do analysis here and I keep it all on two pages on my blog. It’s also tagged as “my roswell meta” so you can block or track it if you want. I make my own gifs as well, I put them in my meta but I also do lyric sets, those are collected here and tagged as “my roswell gifs”. (I also tag each one with relevant characters and any content warnings that might apply.)
I am working on getting my content to be more accessible, which means I’m in the process of adding image descriptions to both my gifsets and my metas with gifs. The page with the image descriptions for my sets is here, and each set should have a link to its description at the bottom. The IDs in the metas will be immediately following the image. This is currently a WIP, which means all the stuff I publish going forward will have it but retroactive stuff might not. It also means there are versions out there without IDs, even if I’ve updated them on my page. I don’t create videos myself, but I have done transcriptions in the past. If there is a rnm related video you would like a transcript of, any length and any platform, let me know and I will see what I can do. *This is the part where I say I’m not a professional and I cannot guarantee professional level quality in my descriptions or transcripts.*
Anyway. Because I analyze, I try really, really hard to be as neutral and unbiased as possible in my posts. Analysis, for me, has to come from an even playing field. I will not hate on characters, I will not hate on ships, and I will not hate on writers. If I disagree with something I will say so, but I will do my best to not be disparaging. I am here to have a positive fandom experience, because I really like this stupid show and I want to keep it that way.
(Important distinction, a “neutral approach” applies to the content of each post not the overarching themes of my meta. I do not control the characters/scenes/lines that inspire me to write, I just bow to the pressure. This means I have a very clear and heavy bias in who gets the most “attention”, but hey. It’s my blog.)
Also. Again, because of my analysis. Context is a very important factor for me in how I write and think, so I will not engage in supposition or theories often. When I do, or when I know I’m doing something that’s more opinion-based than my usual, I will say so. That means that I will not discuss the possible meanings behind stills, teasers, trailers, or anything else we get in advance of an episode/season that is too far removed from the necessary context to understand what it really means.
As a side note, I do greatly enjoy cast/crew interviews and bts material. However, I don’t hang out on social media all that much, and I very much try to stay away from cast/crew personal accounts. It’s my fandom line in the sand for me personally. I don’t hold it against anyone who is interested in that side of things, but I am much more here for the “how did they shoot this” than the “are they dating irl” aspects.
I try to keep this blog a fandom safe space. That means everyone is welcome here as long as they are respectful. In the interest of full disclosure, I am an endgame Malex shipper. They are my main ship, but I also adore Echo and I don’t hate Miluca. I make content about all of them, and I will not hate on any ships or characters, even if I don’t like them. My anon is on and my ask box/dms are always open for questions or clarifications about something I wrote. However, it is my blog and I reserve the right to ignore any ask or message that I don’t believe was sent in good faith.
Along those lines, I do love getting asks. I’m over the moon to get “meta requests” if you would like me to expand on a character, line, scene, ship, episode, arc, or whatever else caught your imagination. I will also take suggestions for gifsets, although that is a lot more spotty, fair warning.
All that being said, I am a fan at heart. I am very happy to go absolutely feral in dms if you want. Just ask! (I’m on tumblr and in a few RNM discord servers.)

uuhhh kinda longy rant abt feelings im having that i never had even tho i had this blog for . 4 years
basically i started this blog out in 2016 when i ran away from my old blog that was full of toxic ppl i followed. when ppl say tumblr is a “hellsite” they rly arent joking, its impressive how much this website can take a toll on someones mental health for a variety of reasons
it was a relief starting all over again, no more of the pointless and toxic discourses i would see all the time, ppl fighting all the time, the anti recovery mentality. this was just some place i would rb fanart and funny posts id find
in that same year, 2016 was also the year i got into guro. i connected easily w that sort of content and art, drawing it was therapeutic in some way, yes i was an “edgy kid” but i had fun w all that. so i made this blog become a “guro blog”. its some sort of escape place where i can just rb art that i find cool and inspire me
and im not someone relevant nor i think i will, but i could always just rb art of whatever i wanted and i wouldnt feel afraid of being judged by it here. but lately i feel that has changed w how much callout culture and fiction=reality mentality has been spreading in fandoms, in a much larger scale than it was on 2015/6.
i feel that i should only be allowed to enjoy guro thats “artistic” or “metaphorical” and that if i enjoy anything bearing more on the violent side ppl will think smth is wrong with me, that im a bad person or that i condone that sort of stuff. i feel like ppl will think im a “freak” or that i condone abuse and that sort of stuff bc of DRAWINGS
being uncomfortable by anything is valid, im uncomfortable w some stuff in the guro meadows myself (cant stand teeth gore or trypo) but its wrong to assume someone is a bad person just bc of the content they enjoy imo ;; i dont wanna feel afraid of reblogging art in my own blog that ive been doing the same for 4yrs and never felt fear. now that im +18 and a lot of things have changed in fandom spaces i rly feel fear of being attacked or harassed even if im just a small blog here
it should be clear that i dont condone any sort of abuse irl, i cant stand irl gore involving ppl getting actually hurt, it makes me terribly anxious. all thats here is art and drawings. i wont ever post irl, nsfw or eroguro here (since tunglr banished them lol) and if u think im a bad person for the kind of content i enjoy, you can leave my blog ^_^
that being said, pls dont ever feel afraid of asking me to tag anything in specific that might make u uncomfy, even us into guro have things that make us uncomfy and can trigger us, we are still human.
if u read this until the end congrats, i just wanted to get this out of my chest ;;

I think it needs PROFUSE reiteration that AO3 is so staunchly defended because it has a robust tagging system - both built into the site's framework AND the culture of its userbase - that allows people to curate their own experiences. And sites like FFN and Wattpad don't have that, which ultimately makes for a worse experience.
One of the biggest Millennial/Gen Z divides I see in fandom is who the onus of content curation is placed upon. Most people north of age 25 understand that it is their own responsibility to curate their experience online. They don't want to see something? Block the tag. Block the search term. Set up filters. Tag extensively so that others can do the same. Block/unfollow people who DONT tag extensively enough to enable good curation. I see far, FAR too many younger folks expecting OTHER people to curate their experience for them. Comments/posts like "let me know if you're a proshipper so I can block you" and "unfollow me if you support X" (by which they usually mean "if you don't actively reject/proclaim hatred of X"). (side note: this is such a puritanical and authoritarian way of thinking that tbh terrifies me. No shit I don't support minors being abused, most people don't. But the fact that an opinion like "teenagers should be free to explore their sexual identities and that includes writing sexual situations about people their age" would get me ridden out on a rail in some corners of the internet is horrifying. Y'all really out here saying the same thought police shit my evangelical pastor used to spew from the pulpit, aint'cha.) The cultural difference in generational cohorts is something I try to be sensitive of because I know that different age groups are going to have different expectations, and I don't wanna be one of those "dur dur gen z dumb" kinds of olds, but I'm also very tired and of late have just ended up blocking people who expect me to do all the heavy lifting for them. I don't owe y'all shit, and I especially don't owe you an essay on why I'm "safe" to follow. I'm not going to vet every single one of my followers or the thousands of eyeballs that have been on my fanfic. I can't. I have a job and hobbies and a life, and that is too goddamn many people. What I do instead is have a disclaimer on my socials and my AO3 page that says I'm 35, I write and discuss things that at 35 year old might potentially be interested in and find relevant. Being a queer 35 year old ND adult is messy. I talk about politics, substance use, sex and trauma-processing, and if that isn't for you, then *don't follow me*. I'm not your mom or your babysitter or any kind of authority with responsibility for your well-being. I'm a grouchy stranger on the internet with opinions. Therefore, I expect YOU to curate YOUR experience. And that's the culture around AO3 - it was made by Gen X and Millennials during the zenith of Livejournal-style fandom in the late 2000s and has a lot of the same cultural hallmarks from that time re: safeguarding content that is "unnacceptable" to mainstream audiences (especially queer content). AO3 exists because two adult men having sex was treated with the same "morally impure" broad brush as literal, IRL CSA. Because AO3 safeguards the rights of authors for that reason, the onus to curate your experience falls to you, not mods, not writers, not site hosts. AO3 and the people who post there aren't going to hold your hand and coddle you and check your ID to make sure you shouldn't be in the grownups area. If you can't handle that, then, well -- as olderthannetfic put it, perhaps Wattpad's terms of service may be more to your liking.
Somewhere in my notes in the last few days I saw someone add some tags that I’ve been thinking about ever since. I wish I could find them again (or that I’d just saved their post at the time) because I think they made a lot of sense.
They were talking about how fanfic is becoming more and more mainstream while still remaining largely transgressive. It’s such an interesting dichotomy to think about!
On the one hand, you have sites like AO3 and realities like widespread high speed internet access being more and more accessible to larger and larger groups of people. This makes it incredibly easy for anyone at all to find and read fanfic.
On the other hand, you have the roots of fanfic. It was born out of marginalized groups such as women, people of colour, and members of the queer community deciding to take the stories that had been aimed at a largely male, white, heterosexual audience and inverting them into something they could enjoy and relate to. To this day, fanfic is a place where people write the kinds of stories that don’t get made into movies and TV shows. The kinds of stories that don’t get published or end up on the New York Times bestseller list.
Fanfic used to be written and shared in secret. People used to hide it. People still do hide the fact that they read or write it. But it’s becoming something that more and more people are becoming more and more aware of.
So now there’s a spotlight starting to shine on fanfic. People who aren’t looking for transgressive works are finding them where they always were. People who think the status quo is fine are getting upset when they enter a place where the status quo is constantly being upended.
The tags on that post that I can’t find made the point that popular media is curated and sanitized and stripped of most of its controversy in order to appeal to the widest possible audience. But that also makes that audience expect all media to be curated and sanitized in the same way. When they encounter the messy, controversial, ugly, radical, difficult things that people write in fanfic, they’re unprepared.
Fanfic isn’t big media. Fanfic authors aren’t being edited and filtered and polished - and nor are their works. The clash between the expectations of people new to fanfic and accustomed to popular media and the realities of what fanfic is and what it’s being written for - that’s part of this struggle that fandom is going through right now. It’s been going on since the beginning of course, but it’s getting louder every year.
I’m still thinking my way through this, but it really does make a lot of sense to me. If those were your tags, please let me know so I can credit you with the ideas at the core of this post.
And if you have any ideas for how we as fans can better introduce the newbies to the culture and expectations in fandom, I’d love to hear it. The better we can guide people into our space, the better they’ll fit in when they join it.

I'm leaving social networks
Hi everyone! I'm posting this news to let you know that I'm leaving social networks. I've been thinking about it for months and using them less and less. Today, I am making it official.
Ten years ago, I liked to share on the Internet. I had my own little blog that I could customize at will (it still exists) and that was all. No dispersion. There were some interactions with my family and friends from time to time. It was a pleasure. We were taking our time. Today it has become a chore. We have to chase after 50 different platforms, all more saturated than the others, not customizable and that decide for people what they want to see. We are submerged with more and more content. And to be visible, we are exhausted producing and posting more and more content that is less and less seen and with fewer and fewer interactions. The Internet at the beginning of the 2020s: everyone posts but nobody sees anything. A dialogue of the deaf. I may have bent over backwards to succeed in automating the publication of my news on social networks using the tools they make available to developers, it still remains a black hole of time and energy. We can't leave all this alone. It requires some maintenance. Twitter, Tumblr and Blogger are ok, their development tools work well. It's been running for two years without me having to do anything. Just check from time to time if there are any comments or not. DeviantArt worked well for 2 years, but they've broken everything recently with their new version. I have to develop it all over again and I don't have time for that. The prize for the most of troubles goes to Facebook, which is a headache black hole. Facebook's tools change all the time, it's often buggy and unstable and you always have to check if their service has worked well or not. You must constantly monitor to find out what is working or not, what has changed in terms of format, and undergo the removal of features that were very useful. Out of development tools, we are still more and more users to find that the basic features that made the platform successful are more and more buggy and that instead of repair them, Facebook's developpers are scattered on unnecessary gadgets that will be overused for 3 months and then forgotten. Their new 3D effect is nice, but I would like to be able to share a publication on my wall without systematically seeing it land on one of my pages instead or see an error popup... And then this slowness.... It's getting slower and slower to load. I feel like I have a rural connection while I am connected to the fibre optic in the middle of a big city. -_- In addition, their policy is increasingly hidding artist pages. Now we have to pay for our subscribers to see what we post. We are talking about subscribers, not just any stranger who might go through that. Facebook talks about refocusing on more family use, which says a lot about the relevance of this platform to share your art. Add to that the saturation of content. Let's not even talk about Instagram which is completely corrupted with bots and fake accounts. That's also painful. Facebook aside, on other platforms there is always a small feature here and there that is not available to automate. So there's always a little something to do by hand. In short, there are hundreds of hours of work to take care of your communication on social networks to have the impression of screaming in a cushion. I don't see a sign of evolution, on the contrary, I see a decrease in interaction. In the end, it's no use. This time and energy, I would like to devote them to focusing on my comics and other creations instead of giving me headaches with social networks. My morale and creativity will be much better, not to mention my productivity. After all, today almost all of my audience is made up of people I have met IRL and with whom I can maintain private contact. So in the end, it's not a big loss for me. So I decided to move away from all this to refocus and devote my time to what I like to do: comics and games. It will make me more productive. My automated systems for publishing my news, illustrations and comic pages will continue to run on their own, but I will hardly ever set foot in them again myself. I will no longer maintain them. And the day when some change causes these automatons to stop working, well, it won't work anymore. And it won't matter. From now on, when I write programs, it will only be to add content to my website or to develop games. How do we contact you and follow your news then? To begin, I would like to remind you that there was an Internet before social networks and that people were able to contact eachother. Good news! This Internet still exists! :D To follow the news of my comics or games, there is always my website and its newsletter or my Discord server or even Tipeee and Patreon and my Ulule projects. My old blog is also still running. To contact me there is the contact form of my website and Discord too. Here is the list of addresses to remember: My website : suiseipark.com (Come on, the content loads faster than Facebook! 8D ) My newsletter : suiseipark.com/Newsletter/ My blog (French) : suiseipark.blogspot.com Tipeee (French) : fr.tipeee.com/suisei Patreon : patreon.com/suisei My youtube channel with my process videos or game demos : youtube.com/channel/UCa5PWLnqA3g6dzg29cr2LpQ My Twitch channel for when I'm in the mood to work live : twitch.tv/suiseikillfaeh If you read this news from my Facebook page, please note that a link to my website is available on the page. Now, with all these links, the one who can't contact me or follow my news is someone who doesn't want to. :p (You have the right, but don't say you're fans. Be honest. It's all I want. ;) ) About my artist friends, I will no longer share their work via Facebook, but directly on suiseipark.com. It is the opportunity to write more consistent articles about their work. :p In fact, all these trendy social networking platforms do not stand the test of time, because they change according to their success, impose more or less restrictive rules on you and finally grow and fade with the times. So I think that in the long term, you don't just have to be present on these things, you have to have a little corner of your own web that stands the test of time. At least a blog, at best your own website with your own domain name. There are lots of tools to help you if you don't master the technical aspect. If you are only present on trendy platforms, you are like an idiot if this one falls apart while if you have a website, there will always be someone to find you in the storm. Trendy platforms are a rough sea where it is difficult to navigate and find your way around, your website is your little rock to keep you safe. On this little metaphor I am going to make all these links to social networks disappear on my website, my pages and my business cards and I will take the time to look after my little home that is suiseipark.com. :p Have a nice day and see you soon! Suisei PS: I invite all friends to put their links to their websites, blogs and newsletters in the comments so that I can follow their work elsewhere than on social networks. And if you don't have one, create one! :p
P.S. If you want miss no news and if you haven't already done so, you can subscribe to the newsletter here : suiseipark.com/User/SubscribeNewsletter/language/english/

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Review
This review will have all the spoilers. You’ve been warned.
It was either late 2013 or early 2014. Good times. I was messing around on Youtube one day looking at videos of the latest Batman game. Then in the recommended videos I saw something that both confused and intrigued me. The thumbnail was the iconic image of Niel Armstrong saluting the American flag he just planted on the moon. Except there were a couple differences. Twisted, terrifying differences. The American flag was replaced with the banner of Nazi Germany. And Niel was Seig Heil’ing to it. I’m pretty sure I let out an audible "what the fuck?" apon seeing this. This was the E3 trailer for Wolfenstein: The New Order. For those who don’t know, Wolfenstein is one of the oldest franchises in gaming, and put FPS games on the map. A goofy game about shooting Nazis in WWII that gave 90s gamers the chance to shoot the hell out of Mecha-Hitler. Think of it as a prototype to the more infamous Doom series that would launch shorty after. The New Order was a modern-day reboot with some ambitious questions. The biggest one being "what if they won instead?" The New Order takes you to an alternate 1960 where the Nazis beat the allied forces to the nuke (among other advanced tech) and thus took over the world. It was grim. It was campy. It was subtle. It was loud. It was dumb. And it was also much smarter and more engaging than anyone would’ve thought. So it went on to be a smash hit in 2014, and one of my favorite games ever. A few months ago to the day this is being posted, Bethesda stopped by E3 and showed the world it was sequel time, showing off Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus (Actually like the 3rd or 5th in the series) to the world. The next day I preordered the hell out of it. Was it worth it? Well after 10 days of tearing through it, lemme tell you.
So I’ll start off with things I didn’t like, get the negativity out of the way. It’s not a big list but I think what on it is valid. In The New Order, which I shall now abbreviate as TNO, in nearly all sections you could either go in fast and loud, putting holes in everything that moves with dual automatic shotguns and a big laser cannon. Or you could be a bit more stealthy about things, sneaking through vents and corridors putting knives in throats and taking care of problematic enemies from afar with a suppressed pistol (which might I mention was one of the things I loved about the TNO; keeping the pistol relevant and not just a forgettable starter weapon like most shooters). It was all about personal play style, but both options were viable. In The New Colossus, which I shall now abbreviate as TNC, going in loud was the way I always went because it seemed more viable. And I always went stealth in TNO. I probably just need to learn the areas, but there was some problems I ran into. Like this game being dark. Not story wise (even though it is) but literally. I remember alot of areas meant to be stealth-able lacking in the lighting department, and I set my brightness at the recommended settings, too. Anytime I’d get caught it’d be from and enemy that I couldn’t see. And that leads to another problem. In TNO, enemies stuck out in the maps. Even if they were dully-colored humaniods coming in plentiful shades of gray you’d still spot them from across the area. It was probably due to both TNO being brighter and the enemies having a wide design variety. Not so much in the TNC. There’s less design variety here and they all seem to just blend into the background alot. Even the brightly-colored HAZMAT and Venus space troopers don’t pop in anything less than Glamour Magazine photo booth. On top of that those two previously mentioned troopers, while being obvious separate models apon inspection, honestly just look like classic Mortal Kombat-esque palette swaps. Again, TNO had alot of variety in their designs. Which is why it was a shame there was no proper model viewer in TNO, and why it’s straight-up bullshit their isn’t one in TNC. One of my favorite bits of last year’s DOOM (another Id games classic updated for the modern world) was a model viewer that let you get an up-close look at the game’s monsters and weapons. The Batman: Arkham games have had it for years. Hell, I remember having them back in 2005 with Jak III. Why can’t Wolfenstein, with their toybox of greatly-designed characters, weapons and assets have it? Or a photo mode, too? I’m not insane about graphics in games, but I still appreciate them with how incredible they are today, and TNC is no exception. It’s a beautiful game. Let me appreciate it to the fullest extent possible. Honestly these days model viewers and photo modes are something all games should have with how far graphics have gone. If only bosses got the same advancement. TNO had a few that aren’t Psycho Mantis or Big Baby Bowser levels, but they were fun nonetheless. DOOM’s bosses were one of the highlights for me. TNC has none of those. Here and then there’s an enemy that can act as a sort-of miniboss, but their’s nothing big and climactic like TNO’s showdown with the towering London Monitor, or the final showdown with the main antagonist, General Deathshead. The "final boss" of TNC is more of a gauntlet than anything. 3 pairs of Supersoldiers, a higher-powered but still common enemy assisted by a shitload of standard infantry, finished off by 2 "Zerstörers", which are basically super versions of the Supersoldiers (I call them "Super-duper Soliders"). The main antagonist of the game, General Engel, goes down with one melee attack, only vainly defending herself with a pistol. An outdated pistol by both the game’s and IRL standards. In a game where mechs, actual Avengers Helicarriers and boimechanically-enhanced mutants are possible, you’d expect so much more. Especially with Hitler himself making an appearance. I was really looking forward to a modern-day Mecha-Hitler. Not sure if I’d want bosses to worry about though since something as simple as getting your weapons out can be a pain. In TNO you could dual wield nearly every weapon in the game, but you could only dual wield two of the same gun. In TNC dual wield returns, for every weapon you can carry, and you can interchange between them. And while it has it’s uses for sure, it feels kinda clunky, not to mention slow. TNC takes it’s sweet time letting you change your weapons which can be fatal, especially since this game carries over a problem TNO had in that you’re not exactly warned when your current ammo’s about to run dry and you’re gonna get lit up while changing a clip.
Now to the good, which I assure you outweighs the bad. Lemme start by saying that the gunplay feels as fantastic as before. Every gun has kick and you feel it whenever you see a Nazi get turned to mush by your triple-barreled automatic rotary shotgun. Yes, that’s a thing in this game. As is a pistol-sized grenade launcher. And sticky-bomb launcher. And an OP-as hell laser cannon that atomizes people and metal covers/doors alike. And all of these can be powered-up through upgrades. The Shotgun can be upgraded to have ricochet rounds to deal even more damage. The pistol can have a suppressor so it stays useful like it did in TNO. The Assault Rifle can have both a scope and armor piercing rounds making it able to down mechanical enemies in one shot. And the laser cannon. Oh god the Laser cannon. Called the LaserkraftWerk in the game, it’s by far the best weapon you’ll get, even before upgrades. One shot will destroy even more armored infantry, but when you upgrade it so the blast can be charged, ooooooohhh. One charged blast will down Super soldiers with ease, and even on higher difficulties the powerful Zerstörer units I mentioned earlier will fall with a few good shots. Combo this with an extended battery doubling your already-decent ammo pool, And you’re unstoppable. I guess that leads to another issue. While every gun has their uses and you’ll likely use every one at one point, like DOOM before it you’ll probably cruise along primary’ing 2 guns. For me it was the Shotgun and Laserkraftwerk. But even then they weren’t the weapons I used the most. It was the heavy weapons. In TNO there was a Heavy MG you’d find here and there. It was powerful, sure, but could only be picked up and not carried in your inventory, and slowed you down considerably. You couldn’t sprint and crouching reduced you to a snail’s pace, and interacting with anything would make you drop it. In TNC there’s 4 types of heavy weapons and they’re awesome. They still slow you down but nowhere near the TNO’s. You CAN interact with stuff and you can even sprint with them. Doesn’t sound like much but believe me, that makes a world of difference. Another thing that gives you an edge in combat is the contraptions. There’s 3 in total; The Ram Shackles, which allow you to bash through both weak walls and enemies alike, the Constrictor Harness, which allows you to sneak around in tight spaces, and the Battle Walker, my favorite, which is just some goddamn stilts. They let you get to higher places so its not anywhere as useless as it sounds, but also has perks, like the other contraptions. You’ll be able to tank explosions without falling over, make enemies freeze n terror at the sight of you, and even keep your overcharged health from going down, my favorite. Speaking of health, one thing that makes the newer Wolfenstein and Doom games is the lack of regenerating health. You have to find health and armor in the levels, and this returns in TNC. One addition though is instead of having to pick up stuff manually, walking over health and armor pieces will make you pick it up automatically, though manually picking them up like before is still an option. It admitting needs refinement but it works well enough. It’s nice after a firefight were I took a beating, I remember where a health pack or some armor was, I run to that location, and I already have some extra heath/armor on me when I get there from the bits that was lying around. While I did say that their isn’t much variety in the enemie’s designs, the designs that are there are good, and carry over that retrofuturistic asthetic I loved so much about TNO. My favorites are either the Ubersoldat, with is basically a Nazi T-800, or the previously-mentioned Zerstörer. Enemy behavior is much better in this game too. In TNO during a stealth section if an enemy ran into a dead body, they’d just move along like something happened. In TNC, enemies are much more sharp. Anything louder and light sniffle they’re hear and investigate, and if they find a dead body they go into high alert and start hunting for you. The levels are incredible too, truly feeling and looking like a 1960s America under Nazi control. The level layouts in this game are kinda funny. In TNO a new level was an entirely new location. In TNC, multiple levels are across one location. This is due to the levels being so much more vast than TNO if anything. My favorite level is either the Nazi base on Venus (the actual planet), or Manhattan, which was directly hit by a Nazi nuke in WWII and is now a desolate, irradiated wasteland. You could feel how thick and cancerous the air is, and the devastated buildings have their upper skeletons eerily bent and curled from the blast. Fallout fans will have a bit of deja vu going through it. All these locales help guide the story along, which like TNO before it is a standout part of the game. TNC takes place right after TNO more or less, after the main character, BJ Blazcowiz, is mortally injured in his big battle with General Deathshead. You’re saved by your resistance buddies before they nuke the place, but you’re still messed up. After 5 months in a coma, the game finally starts. With you shooting Nazis on a U-boat you captured previously in a wheelchair. For half the game the only reason you’re able fight again is thanks to a power suit wired to BJ’s brain. Even while you’re fighting BJ’s injuries are taking their toll. By his own estimate, he has weeks. Which is tragic to think about since in TNO, he met Anya Oliwa, a nurse who took care of him during a prior comatose, and eventual lover. By the time TNC rolls around, she’s heavily pregnant with BJ’s twins. Not being their for his kids is something BJ laments a few times, and you feel for him. Especially when you learn about his awful childhood at the beginning of the game. He deserves a good family, and it sucks he’ll never get that. And for a bit it really seemed like that he wouldn’t since midway through the game, BJ’s betrayed by his abusive, racist, Nazi-loving father who make his childhood such a shitshow, and is captured by Nazi forces. After a few weeks of parading "Terror Billy" The most horrible terrorist the world has ever seen according to the Nazi propaganda machine, BJ is executed in front of the Nazified Lincoln memorial to an audience of millions. Beheaded, it really seems like the game took a grim turn. Luckily due to the quick work of his aforementioned buddies in the resistance and some advanced tech, BJ is saved, if head slapped onto a new super soldier body. This brings up something that some reviewers had an issue with. TNC goes through a tone shift in story midway through the game. It starts out very grim and foreboding. Your base was attacked, the leader of the resistance is murdered right in front of you, America seems like it’s perfectly fine living under the Nazi’s boot, BJ is crippled and basically expecting death, and his unborn kids seem like they won’t have a dad. Even in gameplay things feel grim at first. Even with the power suit giving double armor you can’t escaped the halved health. You really feel like you’re playing a crippled character. BJ himself puts it out there pretty good. "I take it off, I’m afraid I’ll fall apart and all the pieces won’t fit back together again." Then he loses that body and gains one that can actually move on it’s own power and then some. BJ is basically reborn. stronger than ever. It makes sense that the game would kick up to a more upbeat tone. You’re a new man, more powerful than ever before. This can be done. You can save the world. This upbeat attitude peaks at the birthday party scene. Just before the final assault, it turns out it’s BJs birthday, so what do you and your resistance buddies do? Party like theirs no tomorrow, because for all they know there might not be. If their’s one thing I like in a story it’s reminding me that the character I’m playing and the characters around them are people, and not by just showing me their trauma and flaws. Every character in Wolfenstein already has those in spades. I’m more for seeing them having fun. Being happy. Enjoying eachother’s company. Take me out of the misery for once and remind me that their’s something good in the world. Not to say seeing smiles on their faces is what made them good characters. Every major character is pretty good in this game. Grace Walker, The new resistance leader and black revolutionary front member is pretty much a female Samuel L. Jackson. General Engel, The game’s antagonist, is the perfect villain in that you want nothing more but to see her get what’s coming to her. Super Spesh, Grace’s husband and crackpot alien conspiracy theorist, gives some good comic relief for the time he’s around. And Anya. Fucking Anya. Loyal, smart, and considering the crazy shit she does while carrying twins in her, may be more badass than BJ himself. And even with the grim beginnings don’t think this game takes itself too seriously. In one level, right after BJ monologues to himself about his imminent mortality, he (and us) get a first glimpse at the Nazi’s rocket-powered train system. Something he immediately responds to with basically "what the fuck?". After nuking the Nazi high command in fucking Roswell, BJ escapes on what’s pretty much the monocycle from Men In Black. Before BJ’s head is slapped onto his new body, it’s dropped in a jar like Futurama. That Venus level I mentioned earlier? You get there on a Nazi flying saucer. And again, stilts. One of your upgrades is big, stompy stilts.
Overall out of all the recent iD software games to hit the scene lately, I’d say DOOM is my favorite. But I’ll give it to The New Colossus. With a few bumps here and their it’s just as fun to play as it’s predecessor, and improves in most areas. Overall, yes, it’s a step up from The New Order, and if you want a fun, absurd shooter with a good story to tell, look no further,
