So uhhh. One of the cohost peeps turned out to be uhhh not a cool person. I only found out about this after a mutual brought it up to my attention when they showed me a post.

If any of my mutuals are still here, get off of cohost and add me on the fediverse. My handle is @maelstrom071@computerfairi.es and you can add me by clicking the follow button and entering your instance name, or going to your home page and typing in that handle into the search bar.

If you have no idea about Mastodon or the fediverse and just want an account, I suggest making an account at wetdry.world. If you want a similar experience to transfem.social but don't feel comfortable joining that instance, there is of course lethallava.land, and you can still add me on there to get notifications for my posts. There's some brief information on this page about some aspects of mastodon, but you can always feel free to send me a DM on Tumblr if you need any help with anything!

Now, you may be asking, "How is the fediverse going to solve this?" Well the thing about it is there is no one central company or server to run it all, it's an interconnected web of servers, each with their own rules and governance. If that all sounds confusing to you, don't worry! You don't need to think about it. It just means that there's less likely to be controversy and messy migrations. Migrating from one instance to another is as easy as clicking one button and all your followers get copied over automagically.

Juuuust as a reminder: I'll be sticking here on Tumblr for the time being. I don't see this changing any time soon because I'm stubborn as a stick. They're not getting rid of me or any of the others. They can try if they want to, but I won't let them win. I'll at least give them a fight. I just want to give you guys a way to still connect to me if I get banned or we truly lose this site. Additionally, the fediverse isn't quite so mature yet. There is no good Tumblr-like experience and the closest thing, wafrn (wiki), is still in development. But the seeds are sown, and so I will wait patiently until they ripen and once they do, that's when I jump ship (But that'll be so long in the future, you won't have to worry about me leaving. I'll probably still be here, though, for the foreseeable future)

Welcome to my art archive. I've posted a lot about my OCs, TWEWY, Persona 5, Xenoblade X and in other fandoms.

Unfortunately due to recent-ish changes on Tumblr I no longer feel comfortable posting here much or at all. I'll keep my blog up for the foreseeable future or maybe even forever because of how Tumblr stores data. I'd rather have the link back to the source.

They're against generative AI. Their reinforcement came out around the time Tumblr's not-really-against-it stance came out. This is huge to me.

They're working on a PWA of the site so it will have a way to function like a smartphone app

Image post options aren't great but you aren't limited to 4 (unlike cohost - kinda, and Bluesky)

Alt text gets eaten if you edit a post currently which is awful. (Tumblr used to do this.) Alt text isn't an option for picture type posts but is for text posts with pictures. But hey at least you can include alt text!

Communities are nice for fandoms and stuff. You can search by tags but you don't follow tags, you join/watch communities.

They have funding for the next 6 months past any month that was fully funded. So as of April 1, 2024, funding should last until (the end?) of October if they were to not get any more donations/subscriptions from now on. Basically, they have a 6 month buffer and so far for 2024 they've been keeping it and maintaining their monthly funding goals

Neocities

Home page URL should not change but artwork URLs might

The artwork section is inspired by Tumblr's archive page/system. I don't think I want it to be exactly like it (might be a limitation of static pages re: tag filtering) but I want to try and partially make it

Artwork on there have been nightshaded and glazed. I would like to reglaze some pieces that are too glazed for my liking, now that I have a better computer for it (so it doesn't take forever). That's why not a lot of art is on there yet

I might go into detail about how I automated some of the web dev stuff to make my life easier on my my main blog. In summary: I'm using 11ty (eleventy), generating pages from data and templates, using github for version control and github actions for updating the site automatically

Bluesky:

Feeds are cool. I've found and made (through SkyFeed) a lot of Feeds. Feeds can look for text in posts and alt text, and/or specific tags. Can filter out reblogs or replies. Can work off of user lists. Can include/exclude specific posts - like Twitter Moments. There's a lot of flexibility and filtering.

Feeds can lookback anywhere from 25 hours to 1 week when not looking at one user. So when pulling from many users, you could just get the latest updates. For one user (say your own gallery of whatever) you're allowed to go back to the beginning, it can be your art gallery. And then people can just follow that feed so you don't have to worry about your art getting buried if people just want to follow your art

There's a setting you can turn on to warn and prevent you from posting until you add alt text. I love this. Especially since, like Twitter, you can't go back and edit a post

Forcing ALT text has the added bonus of leaving it last so I can double check tags and text in case I accidentally hit the post button before I'm ready

Twitch

There is art. And VTuber stuff. And life updates. Art/project updates. Lots of OC talk. Like I wish I could post more about Null considering how much stuff I've spoken about them on stream but freaking time! And energy.

YouTube

Used to do more Timelapses but stopped because laptop was not having fun with it. Now that I have a new computer it might be better!

Also has Twitch VODs because I want another place to back up VODs since local recordings take up a lot of space. And I can mark Chapters(/Moments?) timestamps to find stuff again.

So what is the blog for now? Archiving, mainly, as I said at the beginning. I might link to my neocities page in maybe art updates or to pillowfort. And I might need a place to fall back to if the other sites don't last. I know bluesky and cohost are not much better/probably not better in other ways so I know that posting on them probably won't be good long term.

But that's why I'm working on the art archive site on the side. I'll always have a safe and controlled place where I can have all my art and details and stuff. It's gonna take a while and it's challenging but it's what I feel like I gotta do now.

i've been wanting to create a writing blog for a while now, but i'm unfamiliar with how to manage one and create masterlists and such 😵‍💫

hi my love!! and AAA honoured that YOU asked ME for such tips 😔 but i'll try my best to give you some!

firstly, definitely go through other blogs to see how they format their blog, fics, and stuff. i wouldn't worry too much about a theme or anything yet, but create a post in your drafts that will essentially be the one that you'll pin for your blog. in it, you can state your name, age, pronouns, whatever, and also link your masterlist and other posts that you want, like an about me or guidelines post

this is how i format my pinned post, in a way that is easy to read and organised :

your masterlist will be a completely different post, which will be the post you'll have all your fics linked in

in order to link the masterlist to the pinned post, you're going to copy the URL link of the post and paste in this box that comes up while highlighting the word "masterlist". then just rinse and repeat this process with as many links and posts you want on your pinned and in your masterlist. and whenever you're ready, post them to your blog publicly!

play around with colours and symbols that suit the style/theme/aesthetic that you want!

tag your posts with relevant tags so that your readers can find your content more easily, such as #seventeen fluff #seventeen angst or even your daily rambling tags and mutual/friends tags!

also this is to anyone in general, if you're planning to post a fic and its a bit long, PLEASE put a read more tag! you can add one by selecting this on a new line:

it all might be overwhelming to manage at first, but seriously take your time with setting everything up! write at your own pace, post random rambles abt your life at 4am, it's all up to you! i literally consider my own blog as my lil life diary and seventeen fanfiction JSKFDSF. trust me tho- you'll get the hang of it <3

post as much as you want and also engage with people who give you feedback on your work (which is... a bit hard nowadays haha) and don't be afraid to make friends and interact with other writers and readers!!

Starting 2024, The blog will permanently change.

This is hitting me harder than I thought it would. Been a bit emotional. I have been pondering about the following decision for a while now, and it’s not been an easy one: in 2024, I will effectively shut down the Ask Blog. Now don’t panic and let me explain.

What will change?

Starting from January 2024, I will permanently disable the ask box – with exception a few times I feel like taking asks. The Ask blog will be rebranded into a reblogging …blog, complete with a new url. I will still post my Psychonauts fanfiction – both links to AO3 and tumblr posts, but mostly I’ll just be reblogging Psychonauts content. I also have a few asks and prompts saved up in my drafts, so I’ll be working on those too. Any sort of asks can also be asked on my main blog: @devastator1775.

THE TIDES OF WAR sequel story is still going to be written, so don’t worry: I will bring this AU to a satisfying conclusion.

Now, I feel like I can’t just drop this bombshell and leave it at that, so here’s my explanation for this action.

First and mostly, it has fulfilled its purpose.

When I started on “The Lives and Times of Razputin Vodello”, I created this ask-blog as a fun little side-project; never really expecting that it would take off in the way it did. Soon, this blog and the asks I got became my main tool for worldbuilding and fleshing out the AU. And I feel that, as a worldbuilding tool, the blog has reached its goal. With the expection for a few times I could manage to squeeze in a little story, my content hasn’t felt that exciting anymore.

Secondly, my priorities have shifted.

2023 has been a tough year for me, and I have come to the realization that I need to bring some changes in my life, both for my physical and my mental health – some of which have already been implemented. I want to work on myself in 2024, explore new opportunities and undertake new endeavors. Which brings me to my third reason.

Thirdly: I'm going to be working on my novel.

Pretty much self-explanatory. If I ever want to get this thing written, I'll need to get started and make time for it, but it means going to some sacrifices on my part, so …yeah.

So …yeah, I originally wanted to wait until November and post this on the blog’s second year anniversary, but … Anyway, we still have a few months left before the end, so please load up my inbox with as many asks as you can think of. If you have messages for me, I’ll happily take that.

Now, don’t get me wrong. This blog has been an amazing experience. This blog and, most importantly, every single follower have brought me so much joy and happiness these last two years and I know for a fact that my blog has brought happiness to some of you guys as well.

This blog invigorated my love for writing again.

With every single ask, you guys have helped me grow as a writer.

I will be forever grateful for my followers and readers for walking alongside me on this journey.

But every journey has its end …and this one’s is in sight.

So don’t be sad and remember the happy times.

The blog might change, but its spirit will forever be etched into my heart and soul.

This blog is my "main" blog but it's not what Tumblr considers my "main"/primary blog (which is what shows up when I like/follow stuff), my memory is terrible but I think this blog became my primarily used blog due to it starting as an aesthetic blog and ending up being for a while the only blog I used.

Anyway, this has been a problem for me since it started because there's no way to change what Tumblr considers your main/primary and because of that instead of moving my posting to what Tumblr considers my primary blog I did a totally not sus-looking workaround by making my primary blog have nothing but links to this blog, with the custom blog page being literally just a redirect to this blog's custom page. The pfp is identical and the URL is nearly the same.

I don't wanna have it be this way anymore, and to my knowledge Tumblr has still not added a way to change your main/primary blog so I'm kinda at a loss on what to do. This blog has literally over 6 years of posts so it would honestly suck to start over on another blog and have to search both blogs when I wanna find stuff. By switching I'd also be hoping that the small handful of people who still interact with this blog would be willing to follow me on my primary blog as well. The other pain in the ass would be copying my custom blog page over to the primary blog and making sure it works properly.

Idk, I'm frustrated with my teenage self for just continuing to dig myself into this hole rather than just moving to the primary blog when it first became a problem, because now I worry that people don't follow my side blog(s) because they see me follow them on my primary blog and leave when they see it's purely empty other than linking to this blog. I feel like I wanna do this move because I don't want that to be a problem anymore but it's gonna be rough, I doubt any of my mutuals have had this problem but please let me know if y'all have any suggestions for how to make any part of this issue better.

i agree that disney songs definitely shouldn't be written with the intention that people will hear them before seeing the movie! i know some people do like to listen to the soundtracks of new disney movies before they see them, but i've actually always tried my best not to do that or hear any of the songs ahead of time because i prefer being surprised by them. so when i saw wish, all i'd heard was the snippet of "this wish" that was played in the trailers, and during the scene where at all costs played i was honestly so confused about the context of it that it was a little distracting. disney music should immerse you in the story and tell you something about the characters, not distract you because the situation the song is being used for doesn't seem to make sense...

oh yeah, i've heard that about the atlantis book! there's a blog on wordpress i found recently who did really detailed reviews of the different disney art books and they mentioned all of that about the atlantis one. i agree it's a huge shame, that movie seems to have such a fascinating world and i'd love to be able to learn more about it. another thing that disappoints me is there being no book for the emperor's new groove at all, though on the bright side at least the documentary for that movie is available online.

oh no, that must be so frustrating to keep missing out on getting to see the tarzan broadway show! i hope you get a chance to see it someday, and that you enjoy it when you do. i'll definitely have to find the time one of these days to at least listen to the cast recording myself. it's so interesting that it's popular in germany but not here... i wonder why that could be. i love that jane gets her own song, though. she's my favorite character from the movie (though of course i also love tarzan himself!) and i always thought it would be nice to have just a bit more insight into what she's thinking and feeling.

i remember reading that with rafiki, the director wanted to gender-swap him as well as give nala more focus because she thought the movie didn't have a strong enough leading female role. so i really do wonder why they'd change terk back into a guy, because something i always liked about the movie is the variety of different female characters in the movie between her, jane, and kala! and terk is really cool and unique for how she ended up breaking gender roles, but then you lose that element in the broadway show. if you do find anything about why they made that change i'd love to know.

Just read that article, and wow, that is so sad! I can't imagine how hard it must've been to see things go downhill like that, a having his ideas taken like that?! Poor guy.

I think Disney needs to slow down a moment and and look into their own history to see what they're supposed to be about. Thinking about how they try to put out so much so fast, and how they seem more invested in their acquired properties than original ideas. How important quality was to Walt, to the point that he nearly bankrupted the company on several occasions just for the sake of quality. Now it's all about the money… making money for the shareholders is far more important to them that making something they can actually be proud of.

That sounds like a really interesting blog! I think they kind of fell away from art books (and other merch in general) as the movies began "under performing". Such a shame because the early 2000s had such incredible and daring movies, and they basically got swept under the carpet.

Kerchak also got his own song (as well as a duet with Kala). They really expanded Kerchak's character and I absolutely love them for that. While you understand his motives in the movie, they dig deeper in the musical, and make him a more rounded and sympathetic character.

That makes sense about Rafiki and expanding Nala (especially given lions are actually matriarchal). I'll have to dig out my Tarzan Broadway book and see if it says anything about Terk. I'm guessing because they took away Tantor and they figure people would be more able to accept Tarzan having a male friend.

Hello, faithful followers. I started making these vids to promote my coloring books as a 55-year-old grandmother supplementing our fixed income. I also write children's stories under my real name (Eerie Echoes is my pen name). I have 1 storybook and a 20-short story collection published, with a second collection coming.

Today is December 10th. I've been a loyal ARMY since 2019 when BTS found and saved me. Now they will risk their lives for South Korea's mandatory military service, which I hate but support their pride in their country and decisions as grown men. My birthday is December 12th and having members enlist is an awful present, though JK and Jimin together will worry me less.

So posts here will also involve my BTS passion before I discovered my creative side. Please forgive the quality and length of the videos, made years ago when I was learning. The first post used AI assistance but the rest are mine, explaining the quality. I don't expect people to watch them all, I mainly hope the guys might see them. Normally I wouldn't care since ARMYs make better content, but I'm freaking out and hoping this will help.

Thanks for the ask. It takes quite some time to go through my favorited fanfic sites so apologies for the wait.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the said fanfic in my favorites and after some digging failed to come up with it. I will; however, try to give you and everyone some resources to dig up some old K18 fanfics. I'll separate them into still functioning sites and sites that require Wayback Machine.

Neishia's Krillin Family Shrine is a famous K18 & Marron shrine back in the days. Upon entering, your browser will automatically download something called Krillin's theme, which is a music file. Don't worry, since this file does not hurt your computer I believe. In the Fan Section, you'll find Is This My Destiny and in fanfics section are tones of other stories (I know its weird that stories can be found in two sections of this web).

Juuhachigou's World contains a lot of DBZ fanfics written by different authors. In the Fanfiction section, 3 authors have written K18 stories. First author and also the web hostess is Trixie and you'll want to find One Life Lost, Another Gained (this is also on fanfic net I believe). Second is Son Goten where all 3 fanfics here are K18. Third is Android 18 and story's name is Fallen, which is pretty dark so anon might like it.

Also in Juuhachigou's World is a Lemons section. There, the only K18 story being The Truth Behind Those Puppy Dog Eyes written by Android 18 (this one is a very famous K18 lemon back in the early 2000s). There is also another fanfic called Obsessive Love by Android 18 but this is NOT K18 even though on the description said it's K18 lemon. Be warned, you DON'T want to open this.

Sites that require Wayback Machine:

For these sites to work, you need to open Wayback Machine, which is an online archive storing quite a lot of no longer existing sites. Since a lot of old DBZ shrines are hosted using the domain: Geocities, when it got taken down, all the shrines disappeared with it. To use the links below, copy the url and then paste it on Wayback Machine's search bar. you should see not just one page though, but all of the captured versions (literally called captures on the top) of said site (this is important because some fanfics are not included in earlier versions but some later versions have broken links).

Furthermore, you'll need to copy the url of these sites quick since if you are too slow, the browser might redirect you to yahoo or some other sites.

First one is a site created by Crazy Retasu (still on fanfic net with all his stories intact) and the link is http www dot geocities dot com slash crazy underscore retasu (just in case the link below takes you to yahoo). In the Poems & Fanfics section, there's A Belated Observation and The Searching. Unfortunately, both story links do not work here so you are better off reading them on ff net. Still, for those interested in this old site, feel free to take a look.

This next one is the real treasure trove here. The Family Photos - The K&18 Page is an old K18 database housing a lot of contents, including missing works from Swiss Army Knife. In the FANFIC section, you'll want to click on March 8, 2005 version (capture) which contains all of the fanfics. Here, you'll find Swiss Army Knife's A Fading Ki, Half My Soul, Little Guy, Lingering Pain, and Lost Souls. Unfortunately, the specific story requested by anon: Dolls that Breathe cannot be found here. II would also like to recommend: I Wouldn't Change it for the World by Leia, which is a very sweet and kind of dark story that ISN'T featured on Leia's ff net profile.

RpThreadTracker - A TLDR Guide

So, since my xKit Rewritten tldr guide went pretty well, I'm opting to do a little guide on something else that's really helped me keep track of threads, which is rpthreadtracker. This will just be a one-post psa/guide on how to use it and why I highly recommend it over other tracking methods. It works really well on mobile, too--hooray mobile users! I have done methods myself such as filling out a form every time I start a new thread, keeping a google doc, all that thing, and they all suffer from one key issue: I FORGET TO UPDATE WHEN I GET A REPLY OR NOTIFICATION.

What rpthreadtracker does is it takes out the middleman when it comes to Tumblr: notifications. No more relying on Tumblr's notifications/your replies getting lost in notifications. You will still have to be diligent for @ mentions for starters or the like, or threads you haven't added yet to the tracker; however, that is the ONLY time you will have to worry about it. Once you make your first reply, the tracker does all the work for you.

But wait--I run multiple blogs across multiple accounts! That's too many thread tracker accounts to track!

Well--in RPThreadTracker's case, sideblogs and main blogs are treated all the same. You make an account, and that's just your hub. This works for both multimuse and single-muse blogs, and can work if you have a mixture of both.

It's pretty simple to add characters. The character's full name goes in the first, you won't ever have to change the platform as it only works for Tumblr, and the character url identifier is your blog name.

Adding threads is just as simple:

You select the character from the dropdown (identified by both character name and blog name) to link that thread to that specific character. The title's just for you, I often pick memorable titles for it, usually something to do with the prompt if it was an ask, or the theme of it.

Post ID is where it gets a little more complex. When someone has answered your sent ask, this number needs to be the post ID of YOUR reply, not theirs. This is sort of where it gets a little hinky; you'll have to either draft that ask right away, or reply to it right away. I recommend drafting it, then filling out everything except the post ID in this section. What this will do is mark it as "awaiting starter" in your tracker (you can also do this for asks you've been sent and are in your drafts--just add all the necessary content minus the Post ID, and you'll know which ones you owe) and you can still track it until you update it.

Partner URL Identifier just allows you to filter away any notifications that are not of the partner you're writing with. For multi-person threads, this won't be useful, but if you find people tend to reblog your RP posts (or you don't care if they do), then you'll want to fill this out. This means that it'll only track when THAT partner reblogs your post, and no one else. This can be great if you post an open starter and a few people reply off the same post; you can have multiple tracks for different muns, and keep up with each interaction without having to have separate threads for them (you may want to, though).

Description and Tags are self-explanatory. I sometimes like to tag mine with the different memes, or when I start archiving threads, I'll mark them as Completed or Dropped so I can sort my archived threads (as I archive threads for a few months before untracking them in case the mun returns and does want to continue--I just no longer consider them 'active' threads).

Now--your dashboard:

This is a great, at-a-glance view of where you're sitting threadwise. This can tell you whether maybe you need to slow down on your threads, or whether you're doing okay. Yes, mine shows me at 95 active threads (with a few I need to add), but I only owe 6, so I know I've made pretty good headway on those. If you're someone who runs replies off the queue, that's also there too--I don't, so mine says 0, but sometimes I will use the "queued" function for drafts I know I have finished but just haven't posted yet, as I kind of enjoy spamming the dash with replies.

Not sure where to start on your replies? There's a function for that!

It picks from your reply list for you. You can just do that if you don't want to work through in any particular order, but just want to get a few out and don't know where to start. I personally don't use it because it's not my style, but for the indecisive, it can be great!

Finally, the sorting:

There are so many options for sorting, it's crazy. These options are available on the all threads, your turn, their turn, archived, and queued sections. You can sort by all of your characters, whoever posted last, the last date posted, and what partner's being tracked.

You can also look at your characters at a glance to see how much is going on with them, set certain characters to inactive, or see which of your characters is most popular:

As you can see, my Weiss and Salem are my most popular muses/have the most threads... but I've probably had them the longest in the most active verse of all my muses.

There are other things you can play with too, such as the public views tool, but that's an advanced tool that I'm not really going to cover. But hopefully, this will be helpful to yall!

How did you get into Warehouse 13/Bering and Wells? What do you love about the show/ship, what woke your interest, what kept it going?

I first watched Warehouse 13 with my family when I was about 13 - I think season 3 had just been released, and there were re-runs of the earlier seasons on TV, I liked it and got the DVDs for my birthday.

I shipped Helena and Myka from the start - and it might be the one and only popular ship that I got into without prior influence from fandom! While I already had a tumblr, I wasn't active in many fandom circles there, and I had never even heard of ao3 yet... But when I discussed the W13 characters and possible relationships with my parents, and my mom was like 'we may not like it, but Pete and Myka as the main characters will end up together, it's always like that' (curse you, season 5, for proving her right), while my dad suggested Pete/Helena and didn't believe me that Helena and Myka were the most shippable... well, I went online, found my first fanfiction, and felt Very vindicated at not being the only one to realize their potential! So really, Bering&Wells got me into fandom.

When did you start writing for them? Do you still write for them, or have you moved to other fandoms/ships? (no worries either way, it's absolutely fair to move on!)

I started writing for them back in 2016 with a College AU that I never quite finished (and don't have the heart to mark 'abandoned' but am honestly not sure whether I'll ever come back to), then only sporadically stayed in the fandom until I found some new Bering&Wells online friends some time last year, and I started writing for the ship again a few months ago.

What do you/did you like about writing for Bering and Wells? What motivates/motivated you to write for them?

Apparently, I have a ship-type of 'Women with a tragic backstory where one had to leave the other for a while', and, well... they just fit that perfectly.

Also, all the lost potential of canon! I do so enjoy fixing that.

What kinds of stories do you or did you write for Bering and Wells? Happy endings or sad endings? Hurt/comfort, plot fics, AUs, kid fics, fix-its, smut, …?

So far it's been short fics, mostly smut, but given that since I started writing for them again this year, I only wrote 3 new fics for the ship so far, I don't think that's much of a pattern yet xD we'll see! I definitely plan to write more.

What do you/did you find easy to write for them; what is/was hard or challenging? Do you feel you have a good grip on the two main characters; is one of them more elusive than the other?

Well you see... It's honestly been so long since I last watched much actual W13 canon... So now when I think of the characters, it's all a mash-up of ideas from other people's fics, plus my own specific headcanons - and I honestly don't care to change that. (Insert that text post 'does fic really have to be in character? Is it not enough that I don't need to learn any new names?')

As for writing them to still be recognizable to people with different headcanons, I've found that Helena's old-timey British-ness and tendency to use the pet name 'darling' helps a lot, while I don't have any such tricks for Myka, so I suppose writing HG would be easier there.

What's your writing style? Planner, Pantser, Plantser? Do you work with a beta? Have you ever co-written a story with someone else, and how did that experience go?

I can write one-shots in one go, but for anything longer than about 5k, or if I just don't have the time to finish even a shorter story when I have an idea for it, I note down the outline and go through it later. I don't usually work with betas unless it is a fic written for a gift exchange.

What are your favorite kind of stories/story tropes for Bering and Wells, either to write or to read? What are stories or tropes that you don't like (or can't stand) to write or read for them?

While I'm not usually a fan of kid fics, with Bering&Wells I really enjoy stories that include Christina, especially in a fix-it way, but also in AUs.

For canon compliant fics, I like some good emotional hurt/comfort dealing with trauma - as they are going through a lot in the series, and canon isn't always perfect about dealing with the aftermath.

What are your favorite Bering and Wells stories from other authors/writers? What do you like about these stories?

One of the, if not the first fanfic I ever read is Time After Time by muppetmanda on livejournal, and it is still my favorite! A long timetravel fix-it for (almost) everything, NC-17, getting together.

VodBot, the bestest little helper I ever did make.

January of 2020 rolls around, everyone’s excited for the new year of perfect eyesight. And then, the funniest thing happened…

Because of the world’s state of affairs leading into March 2020 I decided I should get some new hobbies. I bought my first 3D printer, an Ender 3 Pro, on eBay for just under $200 and it’s been weirdly enough one of my better financial decisions. I also began streaming on Twitch.tv in earnest around this time, and I had a goal to reach Affiliate status in just a few months (Twitch Affiliates are able to earn money from their streams through ads, bits, subscriptions, etc). In less than a month, through asking my friends to advertise my stream and constantly trying to put myself out there (probably breaking some community rules in the process, oops) I became an Affiliate and streaming sort of became a part-time-job-hobby! It was a lot of fun, and I’ve been streaming pretty regularly ever since.

Around October of 2020, I realized I kind of wanted to archive my streams somewhere for safe keeping. The best place to store lots of video data for literally no cost? YouTube of course! You can check out our existing archive channel which also links to all our Twitch pages here! I got to work, once a week I went to Twitch’s video manager page and had it queue up a download of my latest stream for me. I would slice it into different parts based on the games I played, which I had to get timestamps for manually. As you can imagine, this is pretty time consuming and boring. Not only that, but my friends also began streaming and some became affiliates around the same time, and getting them to do this task too wasn’t gonna be easy. So how do I make this task easier? Well, for starters, snakes. Let’s tangent!

Python is a wonderful programming language, it’s often one of the first languages that absolute beginners use because it’s grammar and functions are super easy to understand and use. It doesn’t have any sort of compile time, and is dynamically typed, meaning you don’t need to worry about waiting for anything. It also has thousands of pre-made libraries to make whatever task you’re trying to do so much easier. Lastly, Python also has the ability to send commands to other programs on the same machine, with relative ease.

VodBot’s first version was rather simple, it was made with Python. Use existing Python libraries to send some data to some URLs hosted by Twitch.tv to get info on previous streams (called Video-On-Demand, or VODs for short) and clips (slices of video made by viewers of fun moments on streams). It would do this through the Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface, or REST API for short. Then, do some basic combing of this data to make sure that these videos weren’t already on the host system, and then pass the URLs for these streams to other programs like youtube-dl or streamlink to download the videos to the host system. Oh, also make a small file containing relevant metadata for the stream such as the title, the game, when it was streamed, etc. VodBot “shelled-out” these commands quickly to the other programs and let them do all the heavy lifting, which was just fine. I still had to slice up the video’s by hand, but it wasn’t too bad now that I could pull the videos down faster and leave this little script running in the background while I worked on schoolwork. Heck, I even learned that the program that youtube-dl and streamlink shelled-out to itself was the very capable ffmpeg, which I began to use to slice my videos much quicker without the overhead of a full video editor program.

Of course, this got old pretty quick too. Why can’t I automate this any further? What prevented me from simply queuing up these long videos and sending the relevant slices up to YouTube directly for me? Well, it turns out, not a lot! I'll talk about this more in the next part...
