I mean If you really would like to know.. Here’s how my UB came to be

I’m actually a first year in college, I’m the same age as Mark from NCT.  Yes I’m pretty young but I have gone through life many times. I didn’t actually get into kpop until 2014 when I first was introduced to EXO. My friend had found the music video of wolf(We never talk about this video BTW) but thats where I had a taste of kpop. I started some digging and watched the music video so much that it gave me a bias, Chen. It was almost fate cause we had almost the same birthday and it just escalated from there. Chen was my UB for almost 3 years when I started getting into got7. See I had watched got7′s debut and followed them slightly, not like super follow follow, though I tried lmao. I liked Got7 but at the start of my senior year in high school, I started getting more and more into got7. I don’t even know how it started, but it just happened. I started watching got7 things you didn’t notice, profiles, and other stuff just to see more about them. Jinyoung was my bias since the debut of got7 soooooooo YEAHHHHH… I slowly started getting more and more into GOT7 and trust me I was just a little puppy. I told myself that Chen would be my UB for as long as I’m in the kpop community… but it didn’t work out.. Slowly I was taken over by this fluff ball of savageness and now that fluff ball is my UB. That’s the story about my beginning in kpop. ahah I actually got into got7 a few weeks before Never Ever came out lmao.. I took it as a sign because I started getting into them and suddenly it was annoucned that they were having a comeback and I was like “This is a blessing for me because they heard that I was slowly getting into them” XD basically I was blessed for starting to get into Got7. But I absoulutely love these 7 dorks. I like alot of groups and such but Got7 is my Ult and Jinyoung is my Ult, though every one in got7 is like my bias. LMAO Yup yup.. I don’t know if this is what you like anon but if there’s anything you would like to know, just ask.. I will post more stories relating to my actual dating life simply because my dating life was a roller coaster and makes for a good story… XD :D soooo this is my entering in kpop and the story about my UB and I .. Next would be the story about my previous relationship. ;D keep an eye out

Summary: Jaebum was your childhood friend. Both of you had a beautiful, strong bond. Like sister and brother after all your families practically saw each other every day. However, he entered in JYP to be a trainee and you was preparing for medical school. Since then both were only able to talk trough kakao talk, after a few years once he was stable as an Idol and you as Doctor, you guys decided that it was finally time to meet again. Having no idea what was about to come next.

After shower, you stood in front of the closet wondering what to wear. Truth must be said, your personality and way to dress was quite similar to Jaebum’s. However, you were much more introverted and conservative in certain aspects than he was. After all, he was an Idol. Still in front of the closed, looking for something you though you could wear a more casual outfit. You took a tight black jeans, a dark green long sleeve shirt with a v-neck, a leather black jacket and your So Kate Christian Louboutin in black too. It was not formal, just casual but with a touch of elegancy. Checking yourself in the mirror ‘Yeah I look descent, let’s go’ saying to yourself, trying to calm down. Since you were getting a little nervous than usual.

You went to the kitchen, had a big cup of coffee, took your phone and sent a message to Jaebum ‘I am on my way, see you in thirty minutes sharp’ receiving an immediately reply from him ‘Hurry up’ looking at his message you froze. You had a tachycardia; your stomach started growling, your knees shaking. What was that? You never felt like this before, this extreme excitement was just because you are going to see him, Maybe it was because it has been years since you saw each other or maybe because of the coffee, you just had. It was confusing for you, yet you didn’t want to give it too much thought.

You went to the parking lot of the campus; you had your own car a Red wine Toyota FJ Cruiser. Opened the car and put the food inside. Looking towards the university you thought to yourself ‘God I want to move from here as soon as possible’. It was fun to be honest, you already had your own job, own money, already finished you specialty the only thing left was the Doctorate and everything at the age of 24. However, since it was much easier and comfortable you somewhat just stayed in the campus. Just you, own room in there. Entered in the car, turn on the aux with some good music to hype you more and went directly to his dorm.

‘Kids, you better go change she will be here in 30 minutes’ Jaebum said to the members with a smile in his face ‘You really seem happy Hyung’ said Jinyoung teasingly, Jaebum only stared at him with his typical face of ‘’you better shut up’’. It was obvious how anxious and nervous he was. He haven’t seen her in years. This cold sweat running through his back, make him come back to his senses. ‘Hyung is she pretty?’ asked Bambam looking to him and after to Yugyeom ‘I don’t know, I think so. Yah don’t start thinking weird thoughts she is like family’ Jaebum said growling raising his voice a little bit, he wanted to crontol the member otherwise it was going to be a total mess once you got there. Jinyoung only laughed looking at Mark, this boy knew what was going to happen. Nevertheless, he better kept his mouth shut. Everyone changed, looking good with the best clothes they had in a casual way. Jaebum was going to the balcony from time to time, looking if you arrived until finally. You got there. He knew it was your car, since when you got it you sent a picture to him. He screamed ‘Yah Yah Yah she is here, get everything done’.

You hoped off the car, taking the food with you. Looking around the neighbor, it was a great one. No noises, good houses, had some supermarkets near. It was perfect. Entering the building, you went directly to the 9th floor where he lived. Knocking the door, you heard a lot of gibberish inside of the apartment after a few seconds the door opened quickly it was Jaebum. Your eyes sparkled; he had grown up so much. Even more handsome than he was in TV. ‘[Y/A]-AH YOU ARE HERE’ he said with his loud and excited voice. For him, you looked amazing even more stunning and beautiful than he actually remembered. ‘What’s up Jae, help me here please I am not that strong you know’ you chuckled as he came back to his senses, laughing with you, taking care of you brought letting you in in the dorm.

As you entered in the living room, you saw those faces smiling towards you. ‘Guys say hello, she is [Y/A]’ he said taking the food to the kitchen quickly. All the members had their jaws in the floor; they did not expect you to be that gorgeous. However, they had to keep it cool. ‘YAH! Don’t talk like that about me, aish’ said Jaebum to you pouting, that only made you laugh even more. He served you some tea, sitting in the table ‘So, how is everything?’ you asked curiously, sipping your tea ‘Well I guess, we just finished promoting the new album the one I sent to you through mom’  he replied ‘Oh yeah, Turbulence right? I really like the song Hey’ you said enthusiastic ‘Really Nonna? I wrote it’ said Youngjae to you with the biggest smile in his face ‘Oh yeah, I like the rhythm and everything, I don’t understand that much of music but it’s really good, actually all the song are good’ you smiled back to him.

‘Nonna, what do you do? You are a teacher?’ asked Yugyeom to you ‘I am sorry if it sounded rude, we just want to know more about you since Jaebum Hyung don’t talk about you that much’ he cached you off guard, you smiled and looked at Jaebum with this face of ‘’really?’’ and he only smirked back to you. ‘Am, actually I am a Doctor. I work for the Seoul University Hospital …’ all the members looked shocked. ‘What? Seriously? And still you are friends with this guy?’ said Mark surprised ‘Yah Mark, what do you mean this guy? She is the lucky one to have me as a friend’ you laughed looking to them ‘It’s no big deal actually, but anyways’ ‘Whatever and what about you, what is new with you?’ asked Jaebum changing the subject ‘I am looking for a house or an apartment, I have until next month to move’ ‘Well the house in front of the apartment is for sell why don’t you buy it?’ said Jaebum. Startling members.

‘We can look the house later and if you have any problem I can help you pay it’ he said serious to you ‘Im Jaebum, you know that I don’t need your help to pay it’ you rolled your eyes ‘Strong’ said Jackson in a low tone. ‘Anyways, what do you think of the house do you like it?’ you asked to him ‘Yeah the house is perfect, it’s my style’ ‘Well then I not even going to look it, I am going to do business with the owner today’ you said taking your phone from your pocket to call your lawyer. “Really, you are not going to look? What if you don’t like the house?’ asked Jinyoung, you smirked ‘I trust his taste, it’s basically like mine’ you said while you stood up ‘Jae give me the number of the owner’ he gave to you and you went to the balcony to set up everything.

‘Oh my god, it’s like I am seeing two Jaebum’s’ said Bambam ‘but she is more cooler than you Hyung’ Jaebum glanced over him, raising his hand almost hitting him ‘He is right, she is very beautiful too’ said Jackson looking to the balcony where you were. Jaebum sighed and looked to the boys in a threated way ‘Don’t ever think about it’. When you finished talking, you came inside running towards Jaebum and hugged him ‘JAE, I got the house. I am moving next week’. He felt his heart drop; a cold sweat ran on his back, he felt nervous, he forced a smile and replied ‘That’s great [Y/A]-ah’. At his reply, you suddenly came back to your senses, separating yourself from him clearing your throat.

‘I can help you move in, I am free next week but the boys have a schedule’ said Mark approaching you gently; you glanced over to his tall presence ‘Really? That would be great; I don’t have a lot of stuff though just a bunch of books, they are really heavy’ Mark nodded in agregment. Jaebum growled to his response, not pleased at all. It was not like him at all being this way, maybe he felt this way because the member were being nice to you or maybe because it’s been so long since you two saw each other. ‘You don’t want wait a little till I am free?’ he said to you ‘Oh no, Mark already said he is going to help me. Don’t worry’. Mark gave you a warm smile and went to the kitchen.

Honestly, you didn’t want disturb Jaebum, you knew he was not pleased with the idea of Mark helping you, but you wanted to move fast from the campus. In addition, it was the best just for him rest the next few days to have energy for his schedule. It was weird; you were feeling quite nervous around him. However, it was not in a bad way but in a good way just weird. Jaebum clapped his hands in front of your face ‘[Y/A]-ah are you listening to me?’ he said ‘Oh sorry, what was it?’ you said coming back to your senses one more time ‘What you want to eat? You want to go out or have something here?’ ‘I don’t know, you decide. You are the idol here not me’ ‘Jaebum Hyung lets go eat outside since we are all dressed up’ said Youngjae. He froze for a moment but agreed to the idea ‘Let’s go then’.

‘We can go in my car’ said Mark ‘Hyung lets split then, Nonna has a car too’ said Yugyeom, you agreed to the idea with no problem ‘Jae do you know how to drive right?’ you asked and he nodded ‘So you drive, I am tired’ you smiled to him ‘Yeah sure, I don’t have a problem’ he said looking away, his heart was beating fast to your smile ‘But I want Yugyeom and Bambam to come with us, since they are cute. Right pretty boy?’ you said teasingly to Bambam, he started laughing and blushing ‘Yes Nonna’ he replied.

Everyone left separately in the same direction; you had a nice drive to the place. You listened to music with the boys and laughed a lot with them, especially with Jaebum. It was funny how you felt at easy with him, probably because since he grown up so much and turned to be such a reliable man. ‘Jae are you free next weekend?’ you asked looking to him while he drives ‘Yeah why?’ ‘Let’s go visit mom together on Saturday and on Sunday we can come back, she was worried since you didn’t come for a while’ ‘Sure, but your mom moved from the neighborhood where are you going to stay?’ ‘With you of course, there is enough space in your room Jae besides mom will not let me stay outside’ ‘Yeah, you are right’. Yugyeom and Bambam looked at each other shocked at your conversation with Jaebum, they didn’t know that you two were this close. In fact, they didn’t even know that you two knew each other since babies.

You, Jaebum and the two Maknaes arrived at the restaurant the other member were already there waiting. It was such a nice place, what a great time with everyone. Jackson called you over to sit between him and Jinyoung, with Jaebum in front of you. Feeling a little uncomfortable, you didn’t mind too much you just wanted to have a good meal with everyone and talk with Jaebum.

you can then search by keywords or tags, this will find any post with those words you can then further narrow the search by clicking on the filter icon to select specific posts. if you click the "original posts” option, it will only show you any original posts I have posted with those words and not reblogs

What do you listen to besides kpop/khh/kr&b?

A: I listen to a lot of music and a lot of different music. like my taste in music is huge, I do tend to prefer a certain sound, but honestly my music library is huge and all over the place. my taste in music has shifted a lot over the years, but tbh I still love and listen to a lot of the same music I listened to when I was a teen (aka typical punk, metal, pop punk groups from the 2000′s) like; marilyn manson, simple plan, blink182, sum41, linkin park, radiohead, rise against, the used, underoath, two door cinema club, vampire weekend, disturbed, death cab for cutie, him, slipknot, fall out boy, panic!, boys like girls, the brand new, alexisonfire, silverstein etc etc etc etc

in the past 5-6 years or so I’ve had another shift in music, and I now listen to mostly chillwave, vaporwave, dreampop, synth, synth pop, indie, alternative, indie rock/alternative rock, electronica, indie pop (prob due to work/university and being easily distracted by a lot) I also love 50′s-80′s music like leonard cohen, the beatles, elvis, bob dylan, simon and garfunkel, the smiths, johnny mathis etc.

So I'm going to try stick to the ones I listen to most, and also ones that arent as popular. So, Let's get started yeah? And because I'm an excessive writer for fun, I'm gonna give you a feel for each song. I feel like that'll make it more interesting to read, and more prompting, to actually listen to the songs. Rap Monster × Adrift/Drifting and Life

Now I know this is two different songs, but they're so alike I couldn't choose. "Life" just has a slightly darker tone than "Adrift". Both of these songs however, best capture the intelligence, deep thoughtfulness, and mellow side of Rap Monster. As much as I love to hear him talk about world change etc, these are the ones that enable me to feel connected to him on a soulful level. They're the exact same thoughts and feelings I've had (and probably you too), and he makes them into something beautiful and transcendent. "Life" holds the heavier deep thoughts, while "Adrift" carries a more abstract 'drifting' feel. By far my favourite work of Kim Namjoon. Check out his mixtape

Cha Yoonji A.k.a. I A.k.a 아이 × I Wish

Ahhh okay. My girl Yoonji 😣 She is the sister of rapper Baro from one of my favourite groups, B1A4. She just debuted as a soloist like this year. I didn't know who she was, I was watching her on one of my DVR shows, simply kpop anyone? and she just immediately grabbed my attention unlike some other artists. THIS SONG IS MAGICAL. Amazing beat, enchanting voice, chill vibes, on point dancing. Ugghh She's just so good, please support her and give lots of love!!

Dean × The Unknown Guest

Okay I've said this before on multiple occasions, and multiple blogs, but if you don't already know who Dean is, I feel bad for you. You are missing out mmkay. Anyway, I was gonna recommend "Not Sorry" CAUSE THAT'S MY SHITEU YES DEAN SLAY, but that ones already pretty popular. Instead, I'm going to tell you about "The Unknown Guest". If I had a theme song, this would be it. It's emotional, soulful, but quiet, timid, fragil in a way. It's simply a piano, and Deans angelic vocals, and it sounds like an old record. It's very short but it packs so much passion I tell you. It's so mellow and makes me thoughtful and sometimes sleepy. Listen to it omg

Black Coast, M. Maggie, Lucian × Trndsttr (Lucian Remix)

Wow mmhm. Okay do you like dubstep? Do you like passion? Do you love music and beats that play with your heart rythym? You'll love this if any of those was a yes. Dude. Bruh this makes me clutch at my chest. If you feel music when you listen to it, me goodness, you need to experience this. It's like a lovely rollercoaster for the ears and heart. Maybe it's just me but I don't know try it out yourself. 

Lucite Tokki × If I Were A Bird

I listen to this to calm down, destress, as a lullaby. Everything about this song is aesthetic af. The video, the music, the lyrics. What sucks however is it's lack of appreciation.. I went to get the link for the the video, and realized i never liked it. So I did, and I realized I was only the 101st like. Trust me. This deserves so much more guys. She's an indie artist so she's not as popular you know, but this song.. This song is some kind of magic. Please give it a try. So peaceful, and beautiful.

CNU × Feel The Music

CNU SHIN DONGWOO I LOVE YOU Mmhm, this is like some chill and groovy R&B 2004-06 kinda music and beat. Okay it's sexy and groovy at the same time no joke. Please listen to it. This is a solo song by CNU of B1A4, and it really captures his smooth essence.. lol... The lyrics are fun and groovy, I've used the word groovy multiple times now... But what better way to describe it? And omgee the way he hits those high notes and his voice like breaks/cuts off a tad bit. Ugh you'll love it, give it a go. It sounds so old school.

Mixx × Love Is A Sudden

Ahh so the way I discovered this new group was the same as Yoonji/아이. Through one of my favourite shows, simply kpop. That's how i fell in love with some of my faves. But there were all these new groups doing the same cookie cutter stuff over and over. I was getting angry and started screaming for quality, and they appeared. At first, seeing their costumes I was like "Oh great another cutesy/lame melody/debut girl group." I was in a bad mood okay? But then the beat came in. Dear me. It has such a strong pulse throughout the whole song. Their voices were decent too, a little on the cutesy side, but I heard potential. So I fell for them, and the genuinely adorable, and more original dance moves took me away. But yeah stuck a cute song, sick beat, amazing just the way all the music fits together so nicely, I will listen to the instrumental 24/7.

Kim Taewoo × Dash

Dude. What a surprise this song is. I went into it thinking out was gonna go one usual road, and it freaking jumped off the road, and into a jazzy wonderland. I don't wanna give too much away, but it's amazing, so good. His voice rings like a prince. I don't know much else to say considering I want to keep it mostly a surprise, but that's okay i typed a bit long anyway on the Mixx one lol.

Ladies Code × Rain

So I was never too into Ladies Code. Heard of them, heard their songs maybe, but it wasn't until I heard this song that I fell in love. This song mmmmnmm... After learning about the death of their two lovely members (Rest in Peace 💐) the song hit me ten times harder. A car crash in the rain... Now i know that the lyrics can also seem like a failing boy/girl relationship, maybe I'm reading too much into it idk. It's beautiful. Angsty, dark, sorrowful, chill... The piano is spine chilling, vocals are freaking on point, the "Don't break my heart~" part always getting to me even more.. Shiz I'm gonna cry....

The Neighbourhood × Daddy Issues

Well, as you can probably tell, it's another angsty one!! 😂 This one. It's so numb sounding in a way, if that makes sense? It's muted, in one key, not much going on. What makes it amazing however is the lyrics themself. The mesmerizing, simple, hypnotic beat. His broken voice. The way he tells it. You feel a part of it idk man. Just listen and you'll understand. It's amazing.

What did your last relationship teach you: my last relationships were close together, one was with a girl way younger than me and it was long distance and she ended up breaking my heart around Christmas. Religious or Spiritual: I wouldn’t say I am either of them. I mean I am more in touch with my spiritual side cuz I’m sensitive to spiritual activity but I wouldn’t say I’m spiritual over religious. I was born into a Christian family and my grandpa was very into the Bible and stuff and I used to believe in that stuff but now I don’t really care or believe in half the stuff the Bible says. 10 of My Favorite Songs!

So usually I listen to my music using Spotify. I find the app very convenient because almost all of the songs that I like or I love is already available for streaming in the app. All I have to do is add the song/s to my playlist and then download the playlist. Easy as that. I’m going to share 10 of my current favorite songs and why I love them. :)

I love this song because it raises awareness of mental illnesses. It tells a story that could reach people in need and let them know they aren't alone. The message of this song together with its melody made me love the song more.

2. Wouldn’t It Be Nice by the Beach Boys

This song makes me feel calm. The beat and rhythm makes me call to mind the summer feels. Everything about the song brings me back to the summer season. Where I don’t have to deal with school and stressful projects. Remember those times that I don’t have to do anything. This song makes me happy!

3. IDGAF by Dua Lipa

Embodies the sense of Empowerment. This song is about a person’s stronger and weaker side fighting with each other only to realize that self-love is what will help to overcome any negativity that comes your way. I love how the songs’ lyrics surprisingly suited its fast beat and melody. I love everything about this song.

4. Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader

Good Vibes. Happiness. Stress-free. I don’t have any other words to explain why I love this song. But just listen to it. Even after a rough day, when I listen to this song it makes me realize and think that at the end of the day, there will always be good times no matter how hard life is!

5. King of Anything by Sara Bareilles

I LOVE THIS SONG BECAUSE OF THE LYRICS. DONE. JUST LISTEN TO THE SONG AND ANALYZE AND COMPREHEND THE LYRICS. LIKE IT’S EVERYTHING I WANT TO SAY TO ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO TRY TO CHANGE ME AND OR TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO THINKS THEY CAN MAKE DECISIONS FOR ME. LIKE NO. LIKE I CAN BE KING OF ANYTHING. :P I've had more unsolicited advice on my life than I care to mention, and this was how I dealt with it. It felt empowering to find music that turned my frustration into a form of a song, especially it is a song that doesn't even sound angry. 

6. Slow Hands by Niall Horan

 number 1. it’s by niall horan. BABEEEEE. his voice makes my heart melt all the time!! number 2. chill vibes. number 3. i dont get the lyrics but yoooo, i love the beat. that’s just it.

7. Just Right by GoT7

This is actually a Korean Song! But when you translate the lyrics into English, it’s like the guys are telling you a message. Plus, the melody of the song is lit. It’s amazing. I LOVE GOT 7!!!!

8. Foolish Heart by Steve Perry

Every time we attend a party or when our family goes to a place with a karaoke machine, my father always sings this song. I figured that this was his favorite! And it’s already mine, too. I and my father share the same taste in music. This is just one of the many songs that we love to sing to in the car and at home! This is a very old song, but nevertheless, I LOVE IT.

9. When You Say Nothing At All by Ronan Keating

This was the first song that my boyfriend sang to me while ha played his guitar! Brings back all the good times and memories! Not just that, the song makes me feel like I’m always loved. That I’m always appreciated. Even if i’m not perfect, and even if I have flaws. *heart explodes*

10. Ever Enough by A Rocket to The Moon

This song gives me all the feels. Like literally. When I’m down, I listen to this song, and it makes me feel better. Think about the message, imagine having someone who will always be yours and who will always be there for you through the good times and the bad. This is actually an Indie song. But it’s really good! I SWEAR. I FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SONG MORE AND MORE EVERY TIME I HEAR IT.

The roles of social media in shaping professional identities in the K-Pop industry

Social media and K-Pop

The Korean Pop (K-Pop) music industry, featuring eye-catching young idol groups and creative music concepts, has made a significant impact globally over the past decade through social media. The key to K-Pop’s success is the affordances of new media which allow international fans to access and share information and content. Oh and Park (2012) observe that the survival of K-Pop relies on the free and high quality musical and entertainment content that K-Pop producers upload on social networking sites (SNSs) and user generated content sites (UGCs). Significant K-Pop producers include top entertainment companies, music distribution companies and traditional TV broadcast channels. 

Key players in the K-Pop industry:

Top entertainment companies: SM, YG, JYP

Music distribution channels: 1thek, CJENM

Traditional TV broadcast stations: SBS, KBS, MBC, Mnet

Domestic and International fans

The presence and overlap of complex social media ecosystems on K-Pop related SNSs and UGCs exemplify the concept of techno-social hybridity through the entanglement and mutual shaping of technologies, social practices and the key players in the industry. The convergence of computing technologies, communication methods and new media content over time has changed the industry structure, fan behaviours and communication practices. This blog post will, therefore, discuss the roles of social media in shaping professional identities in the K-Pop industry through the changes in nature of the industry and the relationships between industry key players. The impacts of social media on reconceptualising the international audience of K-Pop and the emergence of new distribution channels and new media enabled labour will also be explored.

1. Reconceptualising Audiences

The convergence of technologies, communication and content has reconceptualised the international audience of the K-Pop industry. Green and Jenkins (2011) suggest that the consumption of K-Pop content by international fans on SNSs and UGCs is a form of participation through them liking, sharing and commenting as appraisers and distributors. A participatory system and culture enabled by technological affordances, which allow distribution and re-appropriation of content is formed when international fans make choices about why, how and where to share the content.

In response to Week 2 Lectorial Activity 3:

As a K-Pop fan, I share K-Pop related content on SNSs to promote and show my appreciation for the content I like. I will tag my friends who also love K-Pop when I share a video or post. Many of us stream music videos on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music because Korean music shows count YouTube music video views to decide the weekly winners of music charts. The views will determine how popular the group is internationally and are converted to points together with SNS popularity. 

Castro, Duncum and Jenkins as cited in Shin (2016) observe that through the affordances of technologies and social media, consumers and audiences in participatory culture have transformed from passive recipients of content into creatives who active produce, contribute, and participate in media production”. Shin (2016) further raises the example of PSY’s Gangnam Style to discuss how the international audience drives cultural communication in a participatory system from simple comments on SNSs and UGCs to “remixes and parodies, cosplays and flash mobs with their own creative choreographies and settings”.

The song also illustrates the concept of viral content and its spreadability, which relies on technological affordances to allow the music video of Gangnam style and re-created content to circulate on social networks such as SNSs and UGCs easily (Green and Jenkins, 2011). Music labels and entertainment companies also capitalize on these affordances to use SNS and UGC-based song and dance cover contests as a marketing tool to encourage participatory culture. An example of such contests is the Taeyang Eyes, Nose, Lips cover contest in 2015.

Kim (2012) points out that cover contests reconceptualise audiences through blurring the lines between consumption and production. These contests encourage music video viewers to become even more active consumers. For a cover to be produced, producers are likely to consume content again by rewatching a music video multiple times to closely analyse and synthesise the original song into their own style and aesthetics, re-appropriating themselves into cover artists. Nonparticipating viewers also turn into active consumers through voting and watching these cover submissions. Kim (2012) also remarks that these contests create a top-down approach to content distribution for active and productive international fans to comply with the contests’ rules and regulations. Each submission of cover videos has to tag and link to the original music video. This enables the artist name and song title to be further circulated on SNSs and UGCs. Hence, social media has facilitated changes in reconceptualising virtual fan bases enabled by social media.

2. Changes in the nature of industry 

The convergence of technologies, communication and content has also changed the structure and nature of the K-Pop industry. Oh and Park (2012) emphasise that social media is shifting the K-Pop industry from a fan-oriented (B2C) business model to a company-to-social media (B2B) model that aims to maximize profits through revenues such as royalties, commercials, and advertisements played before free content on UGCs. This is possible through the affordances of YouTube which facilitate the dissemination of free content. The affordances of these multilingual UGCs have enabled international fans to gain access to K-Pop music videos, variety shows and TV broadcasts uploaded by Korean entertainment companies and TV channels, which were previously only available domestically.

boyd (2011) observes that networked publics formed on UGCs like YouTube display two of the structural affordances of networked publics, which are searchability and persistence. Online expressions such as comments are recorded and archived and content can be accessed through searches and endlessly duplicated through sharing.

This argument corroborates Oh and Park (2012)’s observation that YouTube is a music format without physical restrictions, hence consumers of K-Pop can easily search a piece of music video instantly anytime and anywhere, as long as they have access to a mobile internet device. 

3. New Content Distribution Channels (SNS/UCG)

In addition to common SNSs such as Facebook and Twitter and UGCs such as YouTube, new entertainment content distribution channels such as Naver’s V Live have also emerged as a result of the convergence of technologies, communication and content. In addition to functions similar to YouTube, it is an exclusive platform where Korean idols broadcast live videos and fans can interact with them through real time comments.

These networked publics, which consists of international fans, display techno-social dynamics such as having invisible audiences. For example, live streaming gives producers (the idols) a varying degree of awareness of their audience as “not all audiences are visible or co-present when contributing online” (boyd, 2011). 

The millions of replay and comment counts indicate that not all audiences are visible or present at the time of live streaming. 

The social shaping of technology (SST) approach to privacy suggests that the emergence of live streaming also blurs the lines between public and private spaces as the private activities and lives of idols are displayed to the public, redefining people’s understanding of private and public boundaries. Raynes-Goldie (2011) reinforces that live streaming is a voluntary submission to self-disclosure and self-surveillance. 

4. Changes in relationship between idols and fans

Additionally, social media facilitates changes in the relationship between idols and fans as idols often read and answer fan comments in real time during live streaming, elevating the levels of intimacy and trust between idols and fans, which increases fandom loyalty as the abilities of fans to access the idols’ information is significantly enlarged (Gross and Acquisti, 2005). Moreover, Shin (2016) suggests that entertainment companies constantly monitor the taste and preferences of domestic and international fans on SNSs and UGCs to develop a feedback loop so that their content, such as music, can be guaranteed a greater success. Hence, social media has changed the nature of the industry and the relationships between industrial key players.

5. New media enabled labour in the K-Pop industry

The affordances of social media have also driven the rise of new media enabled labour in the K-Pop industry. The collaborative and participatory nature of voluntary subtitle teams and news translation sites managed by international fans on SNSs and UGCs display characteristics of new media enabled labour, such as disseminating information instantaneously and staying connected throughout the day. Subtitle teams and news sites, such as Allkpop.com, translate videos and content of K-Pop idols into their own languages and re-upload them or create captions straight on YouTube.

Subtitle teams and news sites often compete to become the fastest to produce content. As most of them are fans of K-Pop, the work done by them is fun and flexible out of an office setting, hence blurring the lines between work and play. Their work is also dependent on crowd creativity to develop new media content.

According to De Kosnik as cited in Scholz (2013), new media enabled workers may or may not need qualifications, hence blurring the distinction between experts and fans. Even if most of them do not get paid, they gain sense of contribution to their content output. Providers of content such as entertainment companies and YouTube exploit and gain improved output without paying as translated content can allow K-Pop to be consumed by more foreign fans, hence generating more profit.

However, with regards to the topic of fandom as free labour, Terranova (2004) argues that fans do not regard what they voluntarily do as work as they do it for the “pleasures of communication and exchange”. 

In response to Week 4 Lectorial Activity 4: 

In order to successfully navigate in the networked society of the K-Pop industry, skills and experiences in social media and fandom management are often listed as job requirements for Korean entertainment companies.

Hence, it is evident that the success of K-Pop internationally is heavily dependent on the new media enabled labour of international fans.

Conclusion

The blog post has, therefore, discussed the roles of social media in shaping professional identities in the K-Pop industry with regards to how they have changed the nature of the industry and relationship between industry key players. The blog post also explored the impacts of social media on reconceptualising the international audience of K-Pop and the emergence of new production and distribution channels. The affordances of social media as a result of the convergence of technologies, communication and content have significantly altered the consumption, production and transmission models of K-Pop entertainment. These new models of entertainment-making involve international K-Pop fans in new ways through facilitating more interaction, co-production and participation. As technology advances and converges more with new communication mediums and new media content, international fans can certainly expect more varieties of K-Pop content in the future.
