I've been very much enjoying the Goncharov revival that's happening on here right now because let me tell you as a recent film major grad: film analysis professors HATE IT when you bring up Goncharov while they are praising the Scorsese filmography in typical film-prof ways.
Like it's always "oooh directorial intent, Scorsese is genius for doing this or framing it like this or having them say it like this". And then you say something like "oh I liked it that he had the cast do a lot of improv in Goncharov" and they 90% of the time start blabbering about Actually!!
But to my point, I fuckin love learning about improvised scenes and was super entertained hearing about Goncharov in that regard. Because there are so many quotes that were basically created by the cast doing a couple of takes, throwing the script out for a hot sec, and just vibing with it. And honestly, it makes it all the better.
For example, in the scene where Katya is in the standoff with Andrey and the tension is absolutely CUTTING and Al Pacino says the classic "See you in hell, bitch" and then fuckin Cybill Shepherd retorts with "Oh honey, we both know that's not where I'm going."
Not only is it iconic in and of itself, but it adds this whole layer on top that Andrey cannot have Katya, even after death. Because if you take it literally, he condemns her to hell while also saying that he will still be able to meet her there again. Ya know, the typical theme of a man punishing the woman he desires while also wanting to possess her.
But her answer crushes even that notion. He can't have her in this life, or the next.
And you cannot convince me that Scorsese came up with that himself after throwing Katya around without knowing what to really do with her.
