Meet the Creators - Daikon
What username(s) and platform(s) can folx find you on? (Please include links!)
I write under the penname "Daikon", which was unfortunately already taken on Ao3 and Tumblr, so there I use @daikon1
I do also still technically have a FFN account, but it is no longer being maintained or updated.
(Fun Fact) What is your favorite kind of potato?
Oh gosh, I've spent like a week thinking about this and still don't have a good answer. It's probably either twice baked or french fries with some kind of condiment (ranch, BBQ, BBQ ranch, honey mustard, I could go on)
How long have you been creating works in fandom spaces? How long have you been active in the SM fandom?
I technically submitted my first fanfiction to a Buffy archive back in 2004 but MERCIFULLY they didn't end up sharing it on their site. I discovered FFN around 2007 but didn't start actually posting content (and then only sporadically) until 2009.
Regarding fandom spaces, I've come to and from the Sailor Moon fandom over the years; in 2005 I was OBSESSED with Alicia Blade and was dying every time she updated Love Potion #19. Over time, I wandered away and found other fandoms to invest in (shoutout to Kingdom Hearts) though I was much more of a lurker than anything. I didn't really find my way back to Sailor Moon until 2019 when I stumbled on @floraone (and started dying every time she updated The Unintentional Seduction of Chiba Mamoru). Ignoring one fluke-y and OOC piece from 2014, I've been writing for the SM fandom since mid-2020 and am hoping to stay here for a while :)
What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)
I'm a strictly fanfic kind of girl.
What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?
I love the characters and am low-key obsessed with the dynamic between Usagi and Mamoru. I started watching Sailor Moon when it was first airing in the US in 1995 and when I say that shit was formative for me, I am not exaggerating. My favorite relationship dynamic is definitely snarky, stupidly-in-love A seeks sunshine-y-but-perpetually-annoyed-with-them B.
Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?
I don't mind having various sideships in my works, but I don't think I have the emotional investment in any other SM ships to actually write a piece centering them.
What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?
TBH, I have been struggling a bit with inspiration of late (I had a bad bout of burnout early in the year that I'm still recovering from) so, you know, once I figure that out... XD
In general, I've noticed that music tends to be something I find very inspiring. The right lyric can shake up my thought processes and sometimes give me a whole piece of writing (see: then you showed up...) In the event that music isn't working, brainstorming with my beta, @floraone, can nearly always unstick me when I can't find any momentum.
If the question is supposed to be more of like, why UsaMamo, see above re: what I enjoy about creating for SM.
Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?
I don't like to have multiple multichapters going at the same time if I can avoid it. I do tend to have a multichapter in the works, and will pause my active multichapter for a fandom event (such as a gift exchange or UsaMamo week) or if I have a plotbunny I can't shake. However, I tend to try to keep any side works short (ideally a one shot or a novella-length multichapter).
I also have a handful of ideas/story fragments that are basically paused in my drafts folder because I don't have the interest/bandwidth to tackle them at this time, but I might eventually come around to. In an ideal world, I would finish them one at a time
Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?
They both have their own challenges and rewards. I find it's much easier to hit a wall in a multichapter, whereas a oneshot you get to finish and push out and "check off", as it were. However, a multichapter tends to grow an audience and have folks invested in where it's going, which is both lovely and validating (and sometimes a lot of pressure!) Multichapters are a lot more of a commitment - I can get an idea for a oneshot and churn it out in a week when I'm feeling inspired, whereas a multichapter invariably takes more time and (at least for me) I don't feel like I can take on several at once in the same way I can tackle a oneshot plotbunny and keep moving. A oneshot is also more of a self-contained "complete thought" while a multichapter can be a bit more sprawling, which gives you more space to explore and innovate.
All that is to say, I'm not sure if I really have a strong preference one way or the other. I like both, for different reasons.
Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?
LOL so basically whatever I'm currently tackling in therapy tends to pop up in my writing. Grief and self-worth are big ones lately, which I think is part of the reason I'm feeling less inspired of late. While they are important things to process, I don't necessarily always want to be grappling with those heavy feelings during my fun creative times.
Also, you know. Idiots in love. Healthy and accurate portrayals of sexuality. Minako being a disaster queen. And when I can work it in, I love self-referencing my own works in a kind of multiversal invocation
Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?
Nothing's coming to mind! As mentioned, I'm a writer through-and-through, so I'm not interested in trying a new medium at this time. I think if I did come up with some form of experimental writing I wanted to play with, my beta would be delighted to support me, but right now I'm happy to stick to mostly traditional romantic comedies with a side of emotional processing.

Q: What is this?
A: It’s a flyer for a virtual fundraiser on June 4th that Elite Gymnastics is playing. You can access the show at quietyear.com
Q: Hasn’t Elite Gymnastics been inactive for like, ten years?
A: Yes. This is the first Elite Gymnastics performance of any kind since November 30th 2012, at the Horn Gallery at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
Q: Why did Elite Gymnastics stop playing shows?
A: Elite Gymnastics started out as me (Jaime) and a bunch of my friends agreeing to help me play my songs live back in 2009. I made a lot of weird demos in GarageBand and my friend Dominique Davis from the band Dearling Physique got tired of watching me sit on them. So, he booked me to play at a show he was curating as part of a small local music and arts festival called Clapperclaw. For several months that’s mainly what EG was. At some point the focus shifted to making recordings rather than playing shows, to participate in the emergent culture of new music distributed via MP3 file-sharing. The lineup winnowed to just me and Josh Clancy, who began creating digital EPs that we posted on this Tumblr page as ZIP files full of MP3s accompanied by a PDF of artwork. This is the incarnation of the group that most people are familiar with.
This was before Patreon existed. If Bandcamp was around, we’d never heard of it. Though MP3 file-sharing culture and file transfer sites like MediaFire and MegaUpload allowed anyone to distribute music freely across the world via the internet, it was still pretty difficult to get people to pay you for it. I think it was for this reason that a lot of internet music back then featured a lot of sampling. A lot of artists’ first forays into the world of DAWs and production took the form of mash-ups, bootleg remixes, and DJ mixes. Artists like Animal Collective, MIA, Kanye West, and Daft Punk for whom sampling was a pillar of their creative process were extremely influential. Elite Gymnastics was no exception - the first song of ours to gain traction online was “Is This On Me?” which made no attempt to hide the fact that it heavily sampled Faye Wong’s “Eyes On Me.” The fact that it was so difficult to make money off MP3s pushed people to make different creative decisions than they would have otherwise. It was sort of a free-for-all.
Eventually, all of this started to change. The major labels started getting a lot more aggressive about trying to destroy MP3 file-sharing culture. Platforms like MegaUpload were raided and taken offline. The replacements that sprung up to replace them were increasingly infested with ads and malware. Corporate platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud adopted Content ID filters to prevent the proliferation of copyrighted music there. Blogs and private torrent trackers being taken down meant thousands of hours of labor were wiped out in an instant. Some of the best archives of the history of recorded music ever created were destroyed without hesitation. Even the most devoted participants lost the will to keep repairing and re-making the stuff that cops and record companies kept obliterating.
Josh and I both dreamed of being able to make a living as musicians. We still do. Back then, we were willing to accept a lot of changes in order to make that possible, which seemed necessary. A lot of the stuff that we were great at just didn’t make any money. Once, we were asked to do a remix of a song called “Sa Sa Samoa” by the band Korallreven. I did the remix by myself, which was normal for us, and Josh was so inspired by it that he spent a week working non-stop to create a video for it. People loved it - the day the video dropped, Pitchfork designated the song as a “Best New Track” and New York Magazine wrote about it in their “Approval Matrix.” The video led to a ton of exposure, but from a financial perspective, it just did not make sense to put that much effort into promoting a remix of someone else’s song. The stuff we were personally excited by just seemed to have less and less to do with what actually makes money.
A lot of internet bands during this era began to palpably shapeshift in an effort to succeed in music as a career. Artists who’d first attracted notice for sample-based bangers they made on a laptop started posing with vintage hardware in their press photos and trading in their laptops for live bands and recording studios. It became harder to distribute DJ mixes or mash-ups that contained copyrighted music in them. Influential bloggers either closed up shop or were absorbed into the traditional music industry in some way. Feeds that once touted bizarre songs by laptop-toting weirdos with no industry connections started to become populated mostly by artists with labels and publicists. The bottom rungs of festival lineups started to consist mostly of new major label signings who have lots of money to spend on stage production but not much in the way of grassroots fan enthusiasm or media buzz.
Internet music and what people tend to refer to as “indie music” split off into two separate streams. Today, there’s a pretty intense firewall between internet culture and whatever you want to call the culture of vinyl records, mid-sized indie labels with publicists, and positive reviews from the few remaining websites that still pay people to write about music. I call it “publicist indie,” “lifestyle techno,” or “prestige electronica” depending on whether or not the music features guitars and/or vocals. The recent online kerfuffle about NFTs really emphasized this split. The worlds of digital illustration and game development campaigned aggressively against mass adoption of cryptocurrency - if you saw any Medium posts explaining crypto’s environmental issues, chances are they were written by someone from those fields. Every new announcement by an artist that they had minted an NFT was met with a swift and vocal backlash from fans. Though I’ve never really been much of an Aphex Twin fan, it was still pretty startling to look at the replies under his NFT announcement tweet and see hundreds of furious people announcing that he was now dead to them. That’s an artist who has seemed more or less unimpeachable for most of my life up until this point! All of that seemed to change in an instant.
There is a massive disconnect between the insular world of the industry establishment and the cutting edge of online counterculture. We saw this again a couple of weeks ago with the online response to the crisis in Gaza. We saw passionate advocacy for Palestinians from games journalists and developers much more often than we saw it from musicians. This is a very serious problem for music! I do not believe it is possible to please both sides - that is to say, I do not believe it is possible to be part of internet counterculture and the industry establishment simultaneously. The music industry is too conservative, too compromised, too corrupt. If it weren’t for the ocean of valuable copyrights that labels are sitting on, most of them would be bankrupt within a year. If the industry was forced to live or die based on how they handle what’s happening right now in the present, it would most assuredly die. The only people who don’t realize this are those who are being paid to stay ignorant.
Josh and I did not know this back then. From where we were standing, it looked like internet culture and established media industries were on track to converge. A career in the arts seemed genuinely, tantalizingly possible, right up until the moment that it no longer did.
In my case, I had really been struggling up until that point. My life had been this ongoing sequence of evictions and hospitalizations, and it seemed to be getting worse, not better. I donated plasma twice a week to pay for groceries and while I was sitting there with a giant needle stuck in my left arm for an hour I would see my picture in The Fader or my songs being recommended by one of the Kings of Leon on Twitter or whatever. Music seemed like the only thing the world thought I was any good at. It felt like my only chance at a peaceful, happy life was somewhere out there in a world I could only perceive through a laptop screen.
Gender, for me, was a big factor in all of this. The more invested in the craft of songwriting I became, the harder it was to repress or ignore my gender stuff. At that time I’m not sure I even knew what the word “transgender” meant - I just knew that when I showed up at a venue wearing a skirt, no one would talk to me or look me in the eye, and that reading about people like Anohni or Terre Thaemlitz or on the internet made me feel like if I could get out of Minneapolis maybe I could find a place where people would accept me. The internet was like, a pretty toxic place for someone in my position. When I tried to find people to talk to about what I was feeling, nobody tried to tell me to read Judith Butler or ask me what pronouns I preferred. The internet was just like, overrun with predators who just wanted to fetishize me and exploit me. Music seemed like the only way I’d ever have an actual life as myself. I was desperate for that. I was well and truly desperate.
Between all the big changes that were happening to us individually and the music industry moving farther and farther away of the anarchic free-for-all of MP3 file-sharing culture, the strain on us just got to be too much. We stopped trusting each other. We became the unstoppable force and the immovable object, crashing haphazardly against one another’s resolve in a dazzling display of youthful futility. Our partnership ended, and after finishing out the remaining live shows on the calendar by myself, I retired the name “Elite Gymnastics” and started making music on my own under other names. That was that.
Q: Why is Elite Gymnastics coming back now, then?
A: Over the years, Josh and I eventually started talking again. Though there was a lot we did agree on, and potential future projects were discussed, nothing truly felt right. We haven’t been in the same room since Summer 2012, and we’ve both changed a lot since then. We both have other projects and we’ve both developed other ways of working since we stopped working together. It’s a pretty big commitment to put all of that aside in order to join your fortunes together with someone you haven’t seen in a decade.
Recently, Josh decided to leave Elite Gymnastics. His reasons are his own, and I was very surprised by his decision, but after having had time to adjust, I’m really grateful to him. I had kept these songs at a distance for many years, because it seemed foolish to allow myself to get too attached to songs I didn’t feel like I was allowed to think of as mine, if that makes any sense. The songs felt like casualties of a conflict that I had to bury in the ground and try to forget about. Being able to embrace them again felt like re-growing a severed limb or having a loved one come back to life, almost. Feeling like it was safe to love these songs again made me feel whole in a way I didn’t expect to. I became really excited by the prospect of revisiting them, so that’s what I decided to do.
Q: Does this mean you’re going to put RUIN back on Spotify?
A: No. Taking the record off Spotify was the right thing to do. That record was only ever intended to exist during the era of MP3 piracy. I never envisioned a world where the music industry would be so aggressive about policing the way that copyrighted music is allowed to exist online. If we hadn’t opted to take the record down when we did, someone would inevitably have forced us to. If you want to hear those specific recordings again, you’re going to have to do it the way we originally intended: by downloading MP3 files from the internet. Try SoulSeek.
Q: What’s next for Elite Gymnastics, then?
A: Here’s the situation currently. There is no Elite Gymnastics music available to stream or purchase in an official capacity anywhere on the internet. It wouldn’t really be possible for me to put the old stuff on Spotify or Bandcamp now because of all the samples. Like I said before, it was a different time. Those records were created to thrive on a past version of the internet that no longer exists. They weren’t designed to be compatible with the 2021 internet.
Technically, Elite Gymnastics didn’t ever release a debut album. We had EPs, a compilation, and a remix collection. We didn’t make an album, a record that existed as the distillation of all that experimentation that contained all of the songs that fans of the EPs would want to hear, all in one place. It’s like we did Good Fridays but stopped before we made My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
So, I am currently working on the first Elite Gymnastics album. If you were following my stuff as Default Genders, you may have noticed me posting demos on my SoundCloud page from 2015-2018 that were all eventually reworked into the album Main Pop Girl 2019. The album I am making is taking that approach to all the old EG songs, including some unreleased stuff. I’m collaborating with others on some songs and I honestly feel like it has resulted in some of the best and most exciting music I have ever been involved with. It is a drastic reinvention, but iteration and reinvention have always been a big part of what I do. I want to make something that feels like the culmination of everything that came before, and so far, I think I’m succeeding.
Q: When will I be able to hear this new music?
At a virtual fundraiser on June 4th, 2021, where there is a suggested donation of $10. You can access it at quietyear.com

Where You Can Follow...
Hey everyone! As some of you know, I have been making some changes in my writing life to help me succeed in my dream of publishing my own novels. It has led to some changes on where you can find me and follow my work, and people have asked about it recently, so I wanted to make another post!
There are a number of places you can follow me:
Instagram
I really enjoy using Instagram and post not only for my writing stuff, but also personal life stuff as well. If you are wanting to keep an eye out on what’s going on, this would be an easy place to do it. I also plan to do unboxing/reveal videos for when I get copies of my works (which will be soon--see the Website notes for details!!!). I have been trying to use hashtags so if there is a certain thing I do you don’t want to see (i.e. crafting, baking, pagan stuff), you can just block those hashtags. ^^
Twitter
I won’t lie, I’m kinda bad about posting on Twitter, but I do make sure the big things get posted on there. So if you want to just know the big things, that would be a good place to follow me. Although, I will warn you, I like to reblog stuff from my favorite actors and podcasts, so you may see that often! XD
She Writes (Blog)
She Writes is a new platform of support and blogging for female writers that I found through a writing podcast I listen to. I absolutely adore it as published authors to beginners can blog or post articles in support of each other. They even have editing and publishing support!
Anyways, I plan on using my She Writes Blog to post (hopefully) an article a month for supporting other writers. It will range from tips in the writing process, editing process, motivation techniques, time management techniques, who knows. But if you are looking for some more support, which I am hoping to offer more of to the community, that would be an excellent place to follow me!
Stories by Shanna P (Website)
This is my official writer’s website. I update it monthly! I have a page that will tell you my current projects and what phase of writing they are in, I have a blog-like page where I will post one of my works each month, and I even will do giveaways when I get published for those who are following me (you can follow by subscribing via email or follow through a WordPress account)
Actually, I plan to do one of these giveaways next week as one of my short stories is published in an anthology! When this happens, I will do a drawing of all my followers, those who win will get a FREE signed copy of the anthology, or the book. If you are wanting regular updates on my writing status and publications, this is the place to do it! :D
Archive of Our Own (AO3)
With all these changes, I am stepping back from writing fanfiction, but not leaving completely. There are series I have started that I want to finish (TTB!). However, with the changes to Tumblr, I moved all my stories over to AO3. I have a few that are still listed as mine, most of the others I orphaned, but they are still available through AO3. If you want to keep up to date with my fanfiction progress (I am hoping to do a chapter a month), you will want to follow me on AO3 ^^
Tumblr
Now, although I have moved my stories, I don’t want to leave Tumblr. I have made such amazing friends and met new people on here I don’t want to leave. I also want to still be a part of the community here, so I plan to use my Tumblr account now for challenges. I will host challenges throughout the year to help inspire and promote writers. I know I found many new voices and followers through challenges, so I want to help other writers do the same.
If you are wanting to do challenges, be sure to keep an eye out. I have one planned nearly every month of this year! :D
Monthly Writing Checklist
For those of you who are very curious, I do have a ‘checklist’ (I know, I have an OCD/Organizational Preference Problem) of things I HOPE to get done each month...it is as follows, and I am already a bit behind *falls face first on the floor*:
Post on Website (Some type of original work) & Update Website on Projects
Work on Novel (edit, submit to agent, etc.)
Write Short Story for Own Anthology
Submit an original piece for publication
Write a chapter of TTB
Post She Writes Article of the Month
Work on Mag Pie Submissions (A Local Digital Magazine)
Host/Work on Tumblr Challenge
--PRIVATE PROJECT I CANT TELL YOU ABOUT YET--
Writers of the Cedar Valley Project (It’s a local group I am helping lead)
Other -- some random to do list thing I need to get done that month
Well, that was a lengthy post, and I do apologize, but I wanted to give another update as people were asking! <3 <3 <3

Documentary Photography:
I would like to explore and learn more about a career behind a documentary style of photography using my interests in portraits and landscapes. Since I studied photography at college where I would document my friends when I was 16 years old, I explored the work of Gavin Watson and his series Skins. He documented and took portraits and combined landscapes of the lives of these group of kids turning into adults. I used his influences to document and photograph my friends at the time where I explored their relationships with their family and friends which helped me get a closer insight into their lives. When doing this I found it was research into the life of teenagers and how society and social influences impacted them. Digital photography had just started there wasn’t photoshop or social media at the time, the main influences in their lives was the way they grew up and the impact of the media from television or newspapers.
Since leaving college and becoming a parent I had to grow up really quickly and since digital photography has grown and with the influence of social media in today’s society, I can see a much stronger influence with photography and how it has an impact on people. I have explored taking wedding photographs and portraits as a freelance photographer but didn’t have enough experience and knowledge. I was taking photographs for the sake of it wedding photographs and portraits but didn’t feel any passion in my work which therefore lead me to start my learning process at uni. I have photographed my children a lot and explored social medias influence on them with a few of my projects each term. I would like to continue doing this by expanding my knowledge and learning more about documentary photography by using landscapes and portraits.
“Documentary photography is a style of photography that provides a straightforward and accurate representation of people, places, objects and events, and is often used in reportage” Taken from the Tate website.
There are a few photographers who use documentary style photography which have influenced me:
Gavin Watson
Sally Mann
Dorothea Lange
Robert Frank
Dana Lixenburg
Doing my research I came across a photographer called Amelia Allen who is a fashion, portrait and documentary photographer based in London. She actually never did a photography degree she only had an A-Level in photography however she explains that it was work experience being a photographers assistant which helped her gain her experience and knowledge in photography. She explains how you need to look into all areas of photography not to limit yourself and not to ever turn down opportunities. Naked Britain was one of her series where she documented a naturist camp where she explored body images and self-confidence. Unfortunately, SEO - plus search in general - is definitely typically soloed into focusing upon The Google” and not actually considered for other tactics. Creator Spotlight vol.3 | ADAM LUMB Welcome to another Creator Spotlight! This week we’ve been catching up with Adam Lumb about his debut title ‘The Tide’ - a female-led fantasy horror thriller in the form of a lusciously-produced European style hardback. Available for £12.99 with your SuperCard Go! Hey Adam! Congratulations on the publication of The Tide! There are an increasing number of people using KickStarter to fund comics projects in recent years and I’m curious to hear about your experience using the platform to launch a debut title. What drew you to KS and what were some of the things that helped and hindered you on your mission? There's no way I could have funded The Tide with the production quality I wanted to achieve without crowdfunding it. Kickstarter is great in two ways. It allows customers to effectively pre-order (and Kickstarter helps give potential backers a sense of security and trust to unknown projects). Secondly it effectively tests whether there is a market for the book. (Hitting my goal was a huge relief.) Doing the writing, pencils, inks and colours myself helped because I knew it was in my control (since it was all on me) and the Letterer on the book, Jim Campbell, is highly experienced and reliable. However doing all the rest yourself is exhausting. Anyone who finishes any book deserves a pat on the back. The other thing that really helped was listening to http://www.comixlaunch.com/podcast-archive/ . You don't have to agree with everything in the podcast (and not everything with my campaign followed the usual path expected) but the podcast asks good questions and helps you avoid pitfalls along the way. For example, without the podcast I would have set my funding goal way too high. Most of the backers were not known to me (all around the world and at least half from the United States) and the perceived wisdom is you need a big email list of contacts going in (which makes sense and I only had a small list). I ensured as many people as possible backed on the first day but I was also fortunate that the book was selected by Kickstarter as one of their Projects We Love and that well known creators like Kieron Gillen backed the book on Kickstarter. Any new creator is struggling to get eyeballs on their new comic so any extra exposure really helps. That's why Travelling Man's small-press work is so good for supporting new creators. Thank you! We do our best :) Was the full-colour, European hardback format something you were dead set on when it came time to print or is there an alternative future where The Tide would have been a staple-bound black and white zine instead? The Tide was always going to be colour (and I had a clear vision for this) but originally it was in fact going to be a "floppy" US format comic. The book is drawn on 11 x 17 paper on a grid designed for US format. However I decided to invert the traditional comics publishing model for The Tide. As many will know the traditional US model was to do floppies and then collect into paperback or hardback trade editions. I decided to release through my imprint Rich and Strange Press as hardback first as traditional prose book publishing industry always has. So for those who want a premium hardback, and don't want to wait, they can get this now. I'll then be releasing the digital and lower priced floppy down the line. (Or think Cinema release and then DVD if you prefer that analogy). And yes I know that's different to how everyone else is publishing comics... :-) The other thing that changed was that Milas Clay was originally going to be a man and was written as such in the script. At the last minute when I began drawing I flipped it. But she kept the name and made the whole character more interesting. I believe it happened with the movie Salt which was written for Tom Cruise and then cast Angelina Jolie. This project has been 20 years in the making; what convinced you it had reached its final form and what did it take for things to reach that stage? What a great question. I had to get good enough (measured by my own standards - no-one was stopping me). So I waited until I felt my first small-press, self-published title was of a standard I felt I could put out there. Of course now it is time for others to judge it. And of course I'm already thinking about how to make volume 2 better. This is my first comic ever so not just a debut for The Tide but for me too. You definitely learn from finishing something and seeing it all the way through. Even if it is just the first volume in a series. What can people expect from The Tide, and what should we expect to see from you next? The whole Tide Story script is written and finished and I can't wait for people to read the ending. But before then expect around 12 volumes to get us there. This is Witness Protection in Hell... Thanks for taking the time to chat to us, Adam! Blog #6: Minor Charrette Reflection
With week 7 being the week of the minor charrette, all had been very, very uncertain.
Initially, I had been quite worried over the fact that we had to spontaneously form groups out of a crowd that consisted of the entirety of DXB101 students- only to cram and generate the solution to a design brief within a span of 2 hours. From ideating to developing a promotional video, preparing our slides and finally presenting our concept in the lecture where it all came together; the process was extremely grueling and rushed.
The brief that we were tasked with was to design “…an innovative concept [based within the Botanic Gardens] to meaningfully engage people into sharing stories…” (Choi, 2017). The context behind the project was inspired by Brisbane’s metaphorical status as a ‘melting pot’ of cultures; from the beginning to the end, everyone is shaped by a collection of tales that essentially defines their existence and being as a person (Choi, 2017). Our design needed to serve as an accessible platform to convey some form of storytelling- be it a person’s life story or a simple, everyday experience.
When I had met up with my party, we made our way into the Botanic Gardens to enrich ourselves in the atmosphere of the area where the project would actually take place. Finding a bench, we sat ourselves down, commencing our preparation for the oncoming storm.
(Diagram of the Designing Process, Lee, 2012)
Following the general designing process above, we had automatically assigned ourselves several questions that we could centre our project around and effectively narrow our focuses on. Evolving from the most basic of queries, we were able to identify two significant factors that were vital to the project.
· How would one define storytelling?
· What were the different forms of storytelling that we could concentrate on?
These key points played a core role in shaping the foundations of our outcome. To us, we defined storytelling as both a combination of personal history as well as a creative outlet manifested from fantasy- both of which we used as the basis of our design. What we needed to research however, concerned the cultural background of the gardens themselves- something that had embedded itself into the area over the years.
(Botanic Gardens,Brisbane Marketing, 2017)
Unfortunately, I do believe that the amount of time dedicated to research was lacking- this meant that some of the decisions that we had implemented into our final design were unrealistic or even uninformed. The research conducted was more quantitative and practically obtained in contrast to the boring old look-up-and-record method that I was used to, but that didn’t make the data gathered any less valuable. Again, we generated several questions that we wanted answered.
· What will be the project’s targeted demographic?
· Who are the primary visitors of the botanic gardens?
· How might we make this an interactive and accessible experience for those involved?
· What other projects have been held in the botanic gardens?
Observing our surroundings, it was apparent that the majority of garden-goers were either families, joggers or cyclists- perhaps this was a hint to our potential demographic? No. Unfortunately, not. Although these groups were identified, I believe that the audience that we had set for our concept had been far too broad. The consumers came under an expansion of ‘all those who would visit the gardens’- which of course, was our first mistake. It essentially meant that our targeted demographic was ‘everyone’ and it is impossible to specifically design something that could cater to this limitless crowd.
We did however, try to place emphasis on making the project easily accessible. Judging from the previous events that were held in the Botanic Gardens, most of them were usually to do with strolling the area. We thought that perhaps we could combine both physical elements such as the garden landscape- with digital trends that could make the project appealing to younger audiences who were ‘in the times’.
From there, we began to brainstorm some concepts that played with gimmicks such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), QR codes, geocaching, social media and app development. All of which were functions that were heavily inspired from existing media like Pokémon Go, Bitmoji, Instagram, mapping apps and Snapchat.
Using a number of bases, we generated several design proposals. The first involving no digital implementation, was a fun run that would take place through a circuit in the gardens- several question booths asking about a particular memory would be set out along the way. As participants reach each booth, they can choose to record their past experiences according to the question prompt, the memories are then given to staff to be pasted into a collaborative collage wall. Through gathering these memories and interweaving them with others, a large collection of tales can be amassed and shared to the public.
The issues that we had identified in this method however, was the sustainability of the project- would the usage of paper notes be damaging to the environment? Would people be willing to continue the event? How would we cater to those cannot or don’t want to run?
The concept needed to be altered, this is where the digital component came in- but we had to compromise the accessibility of the project as not everyone would possess the necessary equipment to participate.
Instead of using the fun run mechanic, we chose to install semi-permanent geocache points in the form of QR codes. Though developing a compatible mobile app to use as a platform, users could engage in a pleasant stroll-like, scavenger hunt whilst enjoying the scenery; to find and scan the scattered codes which would be pasted onto random fixtures such as the billboards found in the gardens. After scanning, an augmented interface would appear on the phone’s camera; prompting the users to record a memory.
In terms of the previous idea, the QR codes would serve the same purpose as the question booths from before. Differing prompts would be hidden in different spots but if the user preferred not to record anything, they could also view the stories that had been recorded by others beforehand. The saved stories would ‘project’ from the fixture that the QR code is pasted onto, as a collage from through augmented reality. It was also proposed that each user could be assigned an avatar similar to Bitmoji, to encourage an interpersonal bond with the project and promote the visual execution of the concept’s design. Every so often the memories would be archived and moderated to avoid clutter and the sharing of inappropriate content.
The name that we chose to give to our project was ‘Sonder’. Sonder defines the very realization that each passerby possesses a life so vibrant, so complex that may either contrast or even blend with your own- whether it be dreams, fears, bonds and emotions, everyone has their own story. This was it. A name suiting of our project. This was the chosen design.
All was well until the presentation itself, while we had planned and completed all of the assigned content, we underestimated how little time we would have to present the material that we had amassed. I did suggest that a script should be written beforehand but most of the group agreed that there wouldn’t be enough time to do so- thus relying on their abilities to spontaneously dictate and elaborate on the information posted onto each slide. This, unfortunately, was one of my worst fields- being the shaky, nervous wreck that I am, I regret not pressing the matter with my team mates.
What made things worse was that we were not allocated any particular slide to speak from, and more- there had hardly been any time to review our content. As it was time to present, I found that there appeared to be additional slides and repeated content that was added without the knowledge of the group- making it quite difficult for me to speak without preparation. A lot of time was wasted in the presentation- so much so that there had been none left to present the promotional video. Although this was the case, we were able to convey our solution of the brief to the lecture.
The feedback received required us to narrow our demographic and justify our reasoning behind the digitalization of the project. We needed to consider the accessibility factor of our project more in the fact that some phones may not even possess the technological assets needed to participate in our design idea. A more obvious flaw in our work was definitely our time management- if only we could prepare our material more efficiently then we would have been able to fully convey ‘Sonder’.
Nevertheless, I do believe that this was a very valuable experience that allowed me to get a taste of the frantic hustle and bustle of developing a design response under a limited time frame. I hope that it’ll serve as a warning to the oncoming major charrette.

As of late 2015, it powered 25% of the world’s websites.
And it’s very likely that number is even bigger today.
A large part of WordPress’ appeal is its utter simplicity and non-technical nature.
You can create and maintain a beautiful website with literally zero knowledge of coding.
And if you happen to understand HTML, you can completely crush it.
If you want to create a site for your business or blog, I highly recommend WordPress.
When it comes to cloud storage, I think of Google Drive as being the universal platform.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve worked with clients or business partners who’ve made Google Drive their platform of choice.
Like most Google products, it’s super intuitive and easy to use.
I use it for writing and backing up content as well as for sharing content with others.
It’s perfect if you have multiple people working on a project because sharing and editing is a cinch.
Besides docs, you can create slideshows, drawings, spreadsheets, and more.
I don’t care if you’re Mark Twain, everyone is bound to make mistakes when writing.
Whether it’s a silly spelling error or poor grammar, it’s impossible to catch everything.
But Grammarly will do just that (or pretty darn close to it).
Add it to Chrome, and Grammarly will monitor everything you write, point out any issues, and offer advice on how to resolve them.
It goes above and beyond Word and will make you look like an expert even if your writing skills are lackluster:
The cool thing is that it will also scan your emails before sending them out so you don’t look like an idiot when corresponding to customers or clients.
Word count is kind of a big deal, especially if you’re writing long-form content and need to reach a specific number of words.
But not all online writing platforms display word count.
I love this tool because I can quickly copy and paste a body of text, and Word Counter will let me know how many words I’ve written.
It’s super quick, and I’ve never experienced any sort of glitch.
Content ideas
Coming up with new ideas for content can be a major struggle.
Even if you’re an expert, it’s not always easy to come up with stellar ideas.
I’ve found Google Trends to be a great place for getting a sense of what’s popular at the moment.
Often, it will point me in the right direction, and I can then use it to gauge the exact interest in a particular topic.
For instance, here’s how the interest in content marketing has grown over the past five years:
Using Alltop is a breeze.
Simply type in a search phrase, and hundreds of popular blog posts on that topic will pop up:
Words cannot express how much I love BuzzSumo.
Pretty much anyone can figure it out within minutes, and it’s the perfect tool for generating an arsenal of content ideas.
But what separates it from other tools is the fact that it provides you with key info such as:
how much engagement content receives
who is sharing it
links pointing back to the content
The only caveat is that you must purchase the Pro version to unlock all the features.
But you can still do a basic search with the free version.
This one is a bit like the Google Keyword Tool, only simpler.
Enter a search term, and Ubersuggest will spit out dozens or even hundreds of ideas:
It’s really easy to use, and it’ll keep supplying you with topics whenever you need them.
Communication and collaboration
If WordPress is the OG CMS, Basecamp is the OG of project management and team collaboration.
Countless other products have been developed, many of which are cooler and sexier.
But Basecamp still retains its status and continues to be one of the big dogs.
I love its clean interface and how intuitive it is.
It’s very non-intimidating even for the most non-tech-savvy of marketers.
At this point, you probably know I’m big on visuals.
Images make it easier for me to absorb information and stay on top of my game.
That’s why I love Trello.
It involves a system of boards where you can communicate with colleagues and keep tabs on project progress.
It can easily be scaled up or down as necessary and can really boost productivity.
I know many people who swear by it.
This is another visual-oriented platform that I’ve used on several occasions.
I prefer Basecamp over Asana, but it’s the number one team-collaboration platform for many marketers.
In fact, some companies that use it include TED, The New Yorker, and Uber.
My favorite aspect of Asana is the ease with which I can track a project from start to finish.
I’m a stickler for deadlines, so this helps me ensure they’re always met without a lot of stress.
When I think of Slack, I think of hipsters. But in a very good way.
It’s perhaps the coolest, sleekest, sexiest collaboration app in existence.
And it’s dead simple to use.
Slack revolves around creating “channels” where you communicate with team members either publicly or privately.
Drag and drop your files to share with others, and search your archive any time you need specific information.
Task management
I stay busy, so it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when I’m bombarded with a barrage of tasks on a daily basis.
One of my favorite weapons to counter that is Wunderlist.
I place it on my desktop so I can see exactly what’s going on and what I need to take care of on any given day.
And, of course, I can also access it from my smartphone or tablet.
I can easily save links, photos, and other media I want to keep.
I also use it to set reminders of specific tasks’ deadlines and make note of any business/project ideas that pop into my head.
In other words, Wunderlist helps me keep my you-know-what together.
If you use WordPress (like I recommend), you’ll want to take advantage of this plugin.
It’s a little like Google Calendar, but specifically for scheduling your blog posts.
Manage drafts
See what’s been posted
See what needs to be posted
Manage posts from different authors
Like most things on WordPress, it’s user-friendly, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out its features.
The tagline of this platform is “Accomplish more, every day.”
And that’s fitting because I’ve found Todoist to be a major catalyst for productivity.
You simply record tasks, prioritize them as needed, collaborate with others, and get stuff done.
I love its no-nonsense interface and minimalist vibe.
SEO
This is another WordPress plugin and one that I highly recommend if you’re fairly new to the SEO game.
Here’s a screenshot of its features:
In other words, it handles nearly every major aspect of SEO.
The best part is its simplicity.
I love Yoast SEO because it’s very hands off and automates many of the more arduous SEO tasks like creating optimized URLs, keeping track of keyword density, and so on.
Before you publish your content, Yoast SEO will rate its readability and your keyword usage by giving it a color: red for poor, orange for okay, and green for good.
If you loathe the technical nature of SEO, this is a great plugin to use.
If you were to use only one tool for performing keyword research, this is it.
Even the biggest SEO nerd will agree that it’s useful because you’re gathering data right from the horse’s mouth—Google itself.
The cool thing is that you don’t need to be technically adept to figure it out. Most of the features are pretty self-explanatory.
In my opinion, Moz is perhaps the Internet’s number one resource for all things SEO.
I especially love its Whiteboard Fridays, offering in-depth analysis and insight.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to determine key SEO metrics like links, page authority, and domain authority, I highly recommend MozBar.
Simply add it to your Chrome toolbar, and you’re good to go.
This is another great SEO tool that’s amazingly easy to use.
Just enter a URL or keyword, and you instantly get a boatload of useful information such as:
Organic search volume
Backlinks
Top organic keywords
Main organic competitors
Branded search
If you’re looking to perform competitive analysis for keyword or content opportunities, look no further than SEMrush.
Images
If you’re creating content, you’ll need plenty of beautiful visuals.
In my opinion, Canva is hands down one of the best platforms for creating your own images and documents from scratch.
It’s really easy, and Canva offers a wide array of images that are totally free.
You can modify them as needed for your content or for branding purposes.
The best part is that you can do this with virtually no design experience.
PicMonkey is a photo editor that allows you to design, resize, do touch-ups, create collages, and a lot more.
Using it is no sweat even if you have no clue what you’re doing in terms of design.
It’s perfect if you have your own images you want to customize, and PicMonkey helps you make them look like a million bucks.
Here’s my take on stock photos.
I prefer to pay for them and get the best of the best.
But if you’re just starting out or are on a budget, Pixabay is one of my top picks.
Everything is royalty-free and available for the public to download, modify, and distribute.
They have a massive archive of pictures that covers most topics, and the quality of their images has really improved over the past couple of years.
Here are just a few samples:
Creative Commons is basically an aggregator of images free to use for commercial purposes. These images can be modified, adapted, or built upon.
You enter a search query, and choose from multiple platforms like Flickr, Wikimedia Commons, Open Clip Art Library, and even Google.
It’s a great tool for streamlining your image search.
Metrics
There are countless metrics platforms out there for measuring your website’s performance, traffic numbers, and so on.
But I think it’s safe to say that Google Analytics is the be-all and end-all tool.
The free version is more than sufficient for diagnosing your website and, in my opinion, quite easy to use.
I’ll admit there is a bit of a learning curve, but most people can figure out the basics in a day or two.
Bitly is perhaps best known for being a URL shortener.
In fact, I use it all the time for condensing URLs on my Twitter page:
But it’s useful for way more than that.
Bitly allows you to track individual links and gather key information about their performance.
You can tell what your audience is responding to (or not) and tweak your marketing efforts accordingly.
Despite its comprehensiveness and level of detail, I consider it to be one of the most user-friendly analytics tools.
You can see what’s happening on your website in real time, monitor the actions of visitors, and even look at heat maps, which I love.
I know some marketers who actually choose Clicky over Google Analytics.
Conclusion
I totally understand the frustration that many non-tech-savvy marketers feel.
There are many tools that are great but require serious knowledge to be utilized properly.
These can really cramp your style and drive you crazy.
But the marketing tools I’ve listed are ones that will get the job done without being overly complex.
With most, the core features can be learned within just a few minutes.
This way, you can spend less time trying to figure out your marketing tools and more time reaching your audience.
Can you suggest any other easy-to-use marketing tools?
