A Matter of Opinion by @americano-psycho (tw : blood)
"So, Miss ah Folson, can you tell me what happened here?" He seemed put off by her appearance. Jazz didn't blame him. She knew she painted a heinous picture, sitting in the same booth she had her breakfast in, wearing a floral sundress and once pristine white sneakers, both now covered in splattered blood, along with her arms, neck, face, and hair. She knew her huge smile and stark white teeth seemed out of place among the viscera surrounding her, the table, seats, and windows also covered in blood. This was all calculated, of course. If she disarmed him enough, he may forget to ask for her id and then his memory of exactly what she looked like would be altered as well, with no clean image to compare her face to.
.
This is part 1 of 2 for Invisobang 2023!! I got to work on this wonderful fic and it's so good yall should read it~
Calculated Jazz is just /chef kiss/
Part 2 here
This one took me the longest because I kept going back and forth on how to convey Jazz being very calculated and meticulous in her approach that doesn't look just... many blood and edgy scene.. qwq
Idk if I managed to did the scene justice but I hope it does bc maannn this fic is just so goodddd
The background is simple yet so hard at the same time
Shout out to Enn, my beloved partner who helped me figure out the lighting and also my blood brushes supplier uwu

INTRODUCING CHARLOTTE "CHARLIE" WRIGHT WRITTEN (AND LOVED!) BY CORRIE
[lizze broadway, cis female, she / her] — whoa! charlotte “charlie” wright just stole my cab! not cool, but maybe they needed it more. they have lived in the city for two years, working as a waitress / part time illustator. that can’t be easy, especially at only 25 years old. some people say they can be a little bit wayward and guarded, but i know them to be feisty and creative. whatever. i guess i’ll catch the next cab. hope they like the ride back to the bronx!
triggers: dysfunctional families / deadbeat dads
THE BASICS:
full name: charlotte jean wright
nicknames: charlie (she prefers this)
birthday: 1st april 1998 (25 years old)
gender: cis woman (she/her)
sexuality: pansexual
relationship status: very single
BASIC INTRO:
will be updated accordingly!
charlie was born on the 1st april 1998 in Indianapolis, born to two people who weren't really ready to be parents.
her parents were both very young, they decided to have a baby, to save their relationship but it didn't work.
her dad dipped when she was just a few months old, he couldn't handle the sleepless nights & charlie's constant crying, he didn't even leave a note.
from then on it was just charlie and her mother, which suited her just fine. she was also babysat a lot by her grandma, think gilmore girls but with proper boundaries and things are less dramatic.
you could always find her scribbling and doodling in a notebook or painting on something that she shouldn't aka her mother's living room walls. plus, her hands and clothes were always covered in paint.
but her mother didn't mind, she was glad that charlie had found something that she wanted to do.
art has always been her main passion!! that's always what she'd wanted to do!!
charlie's mother and grandmother supported her dreams and once she'd finished high school, she went off to college & studied illustration.
after she graduated she was unsure what she wanted to do, so she moved home for a little bit. but she was drawn in by the bright lights of new york.
charlie worked her ass off for a little bit and then she moved into an apartment in the bronx.
her apartment is small, cosy, and messy but it's hers and she adores it!!
she currently works for an indie illustration agency, doing graphics for brands, drawing illustrations for kids books etc.
but this doesn't really pay the bills, even though it's her passion. so she works as a waitress as well.
charlie dreams of becoming a comic book writer, when she actually has some free time, she's been working on her own zine.
she's published a couple of copies of it, and handed it out to friends but she still wants to make it big!!
lastly pls call her charlie, if you call her charlotte, she will get very very very grumpy!!
WANTED CONNECTIONS:
friends
good influence / bad influence
sibling type relationship
fwbs / hook-ups
crush (??)
neighbours
co-workers
clients
if you'd like to plot with charlie then please message me @ radcorrie on discord or like this post & i'll message u. i'm super excited to start writing with you all!! xx

My Art Summary for 2022!
(Under the cut I'll go into more details for each month, for memory's sake. Warning: It's LONG.)
Come one, come all for your opportunity to see all of the drawings I should have posted but never did! The ones that make me work harder every december to remember when tf i drew what! The ones that, in missing, make it seem like i only draw once a year--! (going through my twitter media tab is depressing LMAO)
JANUARY
[Pictured: Iola in Prenda clothing. There was a Twitter Post going around asking you to draw your WoL in your country's traditional clothes. Ofc I didn't skip the opportunity to do it! And drew my BF's WoL too for good measure. Still my fav drawing of the year!]
Also worked on a VTuber model for a friend (i drew it as a bust january last year; then this year was asked to expand it to full body). It was very challenging, but also fun!
For the rest, I designed some backstory NPCs for Asera (Daimyorus childhood friend, his goddess and a mage that helped us multiple times); and drew some twitch emotes for a client. Was a fresh, fun start. I remember having a lot of fun and finding that month quite relaxing.
(Goddess Rondra, Mage Rupin & elf-friend Pedro (RIP))
FEBRUARY
[Pictured: My friend's bunny boi~]
Further work was done on the VTuber model, a lot of parts that weren't quite working before were redrawn. He was taking form!! Now that most of the work was done, also did a ref sheet to go with it. I couldn't wait to see him moving!
That's when I started preparing to open commissions for realz, trying to think of prices and set up examples. I drew some BGs and the Complexity Guide, and set most of the boring things up. I plan to open comms either Jan 2023 or February 2023, so let's hope all the work paid off~
MARCH
[Pictured: 'Smile at the Blue Skies', or "Fuq i need a bust sketch ref for my commission examples page". Sounds a bit less dreamy now, huh? LMAO]
But yeah, most of the month was dedicated to the VTuber model, working to fix it as the rigger found issues. Ref Sheet was finished this month. I'll stop mentioning the model, but the back and forth lasted till june or so?? Had to fix all of his toggles; and redraw his entire hair to allow for a better 3D effect when moving (it went from 3~6 layers to over 20). This was my first time working on vtuber models, so there was A LOT to learn. It surprising how many pitfalls there is in vtuber making. I'm very proud of how it turned out, and eternally grateful to the rigger (and to my friend) for being so patient with me. I was sent a small demo of what he looks like, and seeing your drawing move so beautifully like that feels magical!! There's still much to design and draw before he can debut, but hope you can support him then!
Oh yeah, there was this attempt too:
APRIL
[Pictured: 'With Friends' the commission I worked on through March and April. Extra special because that's my friend & his pets there!]
Also sketched some ideas for illustrations of our RP characters (hi Irene), but never really completed them:
It feels so long since I made these... Double checked like 3 times to make sure it wasn't April 2021 LMAO
I REALLY want to revisit some of these now.
MAY
[Pictured: #XIVARTBASH drawing, featuring Nero.]
Also drew the catgirl from Love2DrawManga. Didn't do much this month (...or did but forgot). I believe I worked on some BGs I can't show, but these are still very much stuck at WIP :(
JUNE
[Pictured: Nia's WoL, Mat. Just a smol gift for someone that brings a lot of joy to FFXIV Twitter.]
So... I completelly forgot I was drawing my OCs outfits [facepalm]:
(Don't mind the two in the corner, I don't want my essay to get hit with Tumblr hammer LMAO They're nowhere near done). But yeah, these are my OCs from 'Elder''. I've had them since childhood, and still love them, even if I gave up on the book idea. Will make an actual post once all is done and I can go back to their character illusts uwu
JULY
[Pictured: Cade from 'Still Shining'. Working on this was an amazing experience~ Won't go on detail bc I already did, but still glad for the experience!]
Instead I'll talk about... Art Fight month!!!
SO.MUCH.FUN
I'm 100% going back next year! This event just proved how much I love drawing people's OCs. I really want to be a commission artist so I can do that for a living. Sadly I didn't get to draw everyone I wanted, plus I wasted a lot of time trying to look through OCs while the website was dying LMAO Next year I'll come prepared!
Also I drew that Spring picture to use as a reference in her profile there. I missed drawing her!
AUGUST
[Pictured: Commission for 'Under Maintenance'.]
Mostly worked on commemorative stuff. Anniversary chibi for Brie; that Under Maintenance pic; Thank You for DL message for 'Loving You Fully' and 'Still Shining'. Also designed some outfits (and painted some sprites) for Mythic Meetup: Midnight Mystery (not released yet!).
Started a bday gift for my boyfriend, but something kept looking 'off' about it so I didn't finish in time. Turns out it was overblended... And will require a redraw. Sorry boyfriend TT But my wife (tm) needs to look perfect!!
Also made the design for our new RP characters:
(mine is the not-cat girl, obviously)
...And I belive this is when I made that cursed Yshtola feeding Zero picture? Yeah.
SEPTEMBER
[Pictured: Witch Torunn]
Made the YCH bases, as well as 3 examples. I have no memories of this month, but Windows says this sketch is from september:
OCTOBER
[Pictured: Old OC redraw, for my Commission Guide. Decided to do it after a client asked for clarification if an old drawing was halfbody or fullbody (august last year, Torunn sitting down).]
They're really old OCs of mine. Ever RP-ed in Deviantart groups? I did!!
Cecilia (<-) is pretty much a Iola prototype: salve maker and potion seller who lives with her dad (who taught her the craft). One day he collapses during work, and Cecilia ends up overworking herself to afford his medicine and other living expenses. In desperation, she joins The Guild as a novice magician for money, and gets herself involved on a war she never intended to join.
Celticca (->) is a archer and aspiring musician who wants to make the most beautiful song (tm) for her family. She's very sweet, but naïve and scatterbrained. I didn't have much planned for her, but had a lot of fun seeing her constantly get involved with Evil/Neutral alligned characters w/o noticing LOL
....Now that I think about it, she's literally a FFXIV bard, before I knew anything about XIV.
The rest of October was focused on Magni's Birthday Project and my YCH Halloween Commissions.
...And THIS:
Halloween pictures of our current RP characters \O/ To go with our halloween session~ Also drew these two for our halloween one-shot:
Ellie (<-) and Hadrianus (->). Ellie is a yandere witch I made as a joke and fell in love with. Hadrianus is my BF's wizard. Yes, he looks like Dr. Strange. Yes, that's the joke. The 3rd character was Rosemary, but I didn't ask to draw her so she's missing :( I do want to draw all of them at some point. We accidentally made "Spy x Family, but it's horror and Loid wants to run away" LOOOL I love this trio!!
Made 2 adoptables, but since they went unsold I decided to remove them and redraw for next year:
(The neutral pose doesn't help them stand out ^^;; Sorry bbys)
Also sketched Julio from Atelier Sophie~
(Hoping to finish it early next year. He's not the only idea I had while playing, but other stuff took priority"")
October was so much fun!! Sadly it let me completely drained by the end of it. I got hit with such a HUGE art block it was like my hands just... Forgot how to draw. Everything came out weird. Sadly, that resulted on me having to drop a drawing I was making for Brie :/ Hoping I can pick it back up soon... (better late than never right?)
It's around that time I decided to work on an AI redraw. Used Crayon (old Dall-e Mini) to create some monstrosity for me and tried to turn it into an actual drawing.
The monstrosity:
The Work In Porgress:
This drawing is a bit painful to look at, because of all the self doubt and bad feelings attached to it. But I want to finish it someday. My prompt was something stupid like 'cute anime girl having fun'. I want to remain true to the prompt and make her meeting with lil ladybug feel warm and fun!
...Like of the feelings I was missing back then, and am just now starting to get back.
TL;DR: Take breaks or you'll break.
NOVEMBER
[Pictured: Chibi Adra for Kyou.]
Managing burnout through most of it. Eventually just decided to stop fighting and played games instead. Even with the frame drops, Atelier Ryza is pretty fun~ Hoping to go bk to it soon.
At some point my boyfriend said I should just draw things to have fun for a bit. I followed his advice...
DECEMBER
[Pictured: Art Party (DracoLunari's WoL)]
...By drawing Iola as a sheep herder. It was much more fun than it sounds. I didn't care for polish at all, just seeing Iola in a cute outfit LMAO It's... A mess of a drawing. But it's MY mess of a drawing. I feel this thought calmed my mind a lot.
Also went for my first ever Art Party. It was fun, tho brain did get in the way after a bit, as expected ^^;;; Still want to go to these more often!! It's fun to draw & chat with others.
For random drawings, all I have is a(n embarrassing) fanart of Elf from Isekai Ojisan. I'll post eventually..... (that anime is hilarious)
For now I have a commission and a collab to take care of, and a certain Moon Goddess to draw as soon as possible~ Will be doing my best these next few days, and hope Iola can be my sheperd and guide me to the path of 'having lots of fun drawing again'.
ONWARDS TO 2023...
May my year be filled with bad drawings that I love;
And good drawings I'm proud of.
May your year give you the same
And everything else you wish for!
Thanks @/Taxkha on twitter for the Template!

Touhou VI: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil - or my first journey into a bullet hell game
Touhou is that one pew pew game series with cute anime gals, right?
Source: https://pixiv.kurocore.com/illust/54033795
Just like what I think are many people, that’s pretty much all I knew about the franchise as a whole! And to be honest, for a long long time, I was AFRAID of going any closer to anything Touhou-related! Because of them being bullet hecks, they seemed like the most frustrating and unfun games I could possibly be playing! But then... time passed... Fast forward to somewhere in 2020: I was watching the biyearly Games Done Quick event, and one of the first runs showcased during it was none other than Touhou Luna Nights! But while the speedrun itself was very impressive, the thing that really captivated me was well... everything else! Even though this was only a Metroidvania fangame, IT LOOKED LIKE SO MUCH FUN! The graphics, the special effects, the mechanics... everything just seemed like a dream! In spite of that, I only picked the game up and played it about a year later, thanks to a Steam sale! And to keep things short, I ADORED it. It was a bit too short, but everything else was spot on, and even better than I thought it would be from what I saw at GDQ! But that’s sadly a review for another time :( Because I literally fell in love in this game, well... I thought “screw it, I’ve been morbidly curious for years now, let’s actually try a freakin’ Touhou game!”
And so, after some research I’ve learned that the sixth game - the first one released on Windows PCs! - was the one that served as inspiration for Luna Nights as a whole - its characters, music, stage aesthetics and more! It just seemed natural to settle with this one~
How did it go? What did I think about it? Well, that’s why we’re here: those are my thoughts about Touhou VI: the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
Now for a pointless history lesson: as I said earlier, Touhou 6 was the very first game published for Windows PCs, all the way back in 2002! The five previous games were actually exclusive to a Japan-only machine, the NEC PC-98, a line that prevailed strongly in Japan before Microsoft conquered the world. As such, it’s really the first game that’s still relatively accessible today, as PC-98 emulation is... not really a stable thing yet -_- So even though this wasn’t quite true, it’s as if I started my journey into Touhou with the original! And once I started playing, I was honestly surprised at one thing once I hit the title screen: this game actually has lots of options to make the experience easier or harder!
I know that being able to change your starting lives, starting bombs, choose your overall difficulty and such isn’t groundbreaking at all, but honestly? I didn’t expect things to be so customisable in a bullet heck game series - a genre that’s known for being merciless to players! I did decide to go on Normal to have the “intended” experience, but things aren’t as daunting as you may think!
This game also allows you to play as not only Reimu, the poster character of the franchise, but also Marisa! Both of these girls also boasts two different weapons each, with their own strengths, weaknesses and bomb attacks! Again, I genuinely did not expect so much breathing room even though looking back... I feel like I should have : P
Once I actually started playing the game itself, there’s yet another thing that surprised me: the difficulty curve... it’s... manageable??
Now granted, I’m a person that plays a *lot* of games, and on top of that, I play lots of action games as well, games that require quick reaction times, good pattern reading and so on so forth. So there’s a chance my judgement on the game’s difficulty might be wrong or biased... but to me? Embodiment of Scarlet Devil actually has a good difficulty curve! The first stage of the game has many enemies that can shoot many bullets, but they’re slow, predictable and relatively easy to avoid because you have lots of space to maneuver around! On that same train of thought, Rumia, the first stage’s boss, certainly doubles down on the number of bullets she can throw at you. But, their patterns are once again pretty slow and predictable, making things much more comfortable at the start of your adventure!
But hold on a minute here, how does this game actually plays? Well, this is where I need to let out a horrifying truth:
Touhou is actually really, REALLY fun.
At first it does seem like a pretty standard shooter: you shoot at things, dodge bullets, collect power ups to boost your weapon’s strength, and make sure you don’t die too much in order to reach the final boss in good shape. However, what I ended up loving about Touhou are its many, many mechanics that spice things up beautifully! The first one I wanna focus on is “Grazing” and it’s actually pretty simple: if you do your best to get close to a bullet or a laser without touching it with your (very small!) hitbox, you graze that bullet! Not only will a satisfying sound effect play out each time you graze something, you will also gain points each time you do this maneuver, making it essential for a high score, and especially, to gain extra lives faster! Secondly, there’s bombing! I am totally repeating myself here, but while each character has a different kind of bomb to their disposal, they each function in relatively the same way: you get to launch a strong attack against your opponents, get invincibility frames, and on top of that, get rid of any bullets that are currently on the screen! I love bombs in this game because they create a great balance: you can totally use them for offensive purposes, buuuut they also serve as a great defensive clutch if you just find things too difficult at the moment. Bombs even have two extra layers to them! When you will get hit and lose a life (and believe me, you will) your bombs will get refilled back to three, urging you to not hoard them too much even if you’d prefer to save them for a tougher part. Because if you die, you might just “waste” bombs in a way! However, here’s an advanced kicker: if you manage to hit the bomb button just as you are hit by a projectile (8 frames within death I think!) you not only are able to save yourself from losing a life, you also won’t lose a bomb at all, either! This is a very difficult trick, but a very cool and potentially important one if you plan things out in the heat of battle ^^
Then there’s a mechanic that, to my knowledge, got introduced in EOSD: the POC, as in Point Of Collection! Now, as you destroy the many enemies after Reimu or Marisa, they naturally drop many power ups and point icons, and because there’s many of these you’re bound to miss them. However, this is where the POC comes in: if you are at full weapon power, you will earn the ability to collect every icon on the screen! This makes sense and is actually very smart, because most players - myself included - tend to hug the bottom of the screen as bullets are more scarce and slower here. BUT reaching that POC close to the top of the screen is a great way to incentivise players to risk things in order to get a massive amount of points and gain extra lives way faster! And finally, as soon as you do reach that max power, the game will automatically wipe every single projectile off the screen, so it’s even possible to time when you’ll get your final power boost to make things easier on yourself!
All of those mechanics together make Touhou EOSD a pure joy to play! It’s simple on the surface but has such interesting mechanics and risk-reward elements that can push you out of your comfort zone, but never forces you to! And sure enough, I got addicted~
Even though I did say that the game had a good curve and started off not too difficult, it does not mean that your journey will be easy: even early game bosses such as Cirno and Meiling took me lots of practice to get consistent at, by studying their patterns and testing out which strategies worked the best for survival. And eventually, even Patchouli and Sayaka’s stages will test you out with lots of predictable-yet-deadly bullets to test out your screen reading skills and even reflexes.
Touhou may be more accessible than I thought, but do not be mistaken: on Normal, this game will still challenge you, and I absolutely love it for that <3
Another thing that helps this game out is - please pretend to be surprised - the music. Touhou has always been known for bringing some very good tunes all around, but besides Luna Nights’s incredible soundtrack, I actually never got to listen to any of them besides Bad Apple and one fanime opening my bestie sent me one year ago. And well... it’s true!
The game uses some very artificial, even out-of-tune instruments for its music, but strangely enough, it REALLY works! It gives the music a very nostalgic, warm feeling that’s hard to describe, but it works so well at making those songs catchy as all heck! It also helps that the compositions themselves are pretty strong and surprisingly complex for its genre, too! I would pick a favourite theme to show off, but the soundtrack’s just really consistent and good all around!
Sadly, I mostly cannot say the same for the game’s presentation. This game is a PC app from 2002 and it sadly somewhat shows. I’ll even bring a special mention to the in-game portraits, which are hilariously HORRIBLE! Thankfully dedicated fans have made a patch to improve the game’s visuals so that they’re more in line with later titles, but at base it’s really not the prettiest gem visually...
...except for the spell cards, the bosses’s strongest attacks, which are genuinely gorgeous multicolored motives that will struck you in awe before you are inevitably destroyed by them, it’s great! My favourite is the one you get from Meiling’s mid stage encounter, pictured above!
Before wrapping up this long, long post, I do wanna add this: the game will unfortunately only give you the good ending only by playing on Normal and above, and only if you beat the game without using any continues. This is called a 1CC, or 1 Credit Clear. Even if I don’t think the bad ending’s actually that unsatisfactory, I did want to get better at the game! So I practiced for many hours a day for a couple of weeks, memorized each boss’s patterns, learned where to graze, when to optimally reach the POC to get as many points as possible... this game pushed me to get better with an incentive, a reward waiting at the end, on top of the satisfaction of simply cheesing what used to be so difficult at some point and... well, I think this is the proof of a well-crafted game right there. After many failed attempts, I finally managed to 1CC this game (pictures below!!) and it was, genuinely, one of the most satisfying moments in my gaming life <3
So... yeah. I might be a Touhou fan now. Welp.
Touhou VI: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was such a pleasant surprise for me: I expected a game I’d find somewhat boring at best and frustrating at worst, but I ended up having a very, very good time, and honestly? It’s not as hard as you’d think it is! You can beat a Touhou game, so long as you are interested in practicing and getting better, and I promise it’ll feel rewarding in the best of ways <3
I just wanna say thank you to Luna Nights and Team Ladybug, because without them, I would have never been curious and then surprised by how cool this game is. Thank you <3
And many thanks to you, the reading, for staying until the end! Thank you for reading!

That he may hold me by the hand - Chapter 13
Pairing: Arthur Morgan x Albert Mason
Rating: Mature (Adult Themes and Situations, Violence, and Sexual Content)
Summary: After saving Albert from stumbling off a cliff in the Heartlands, Arthur invites him to Valentine for a drink. What ensues after that is a quiet love story, in which both men find themselves completely undone.
Masterpost | AO3 | Epigraph
Chapter 13: You came into my soul, like a song.
The spurs in the hallway belonged to John. Just John. He knocked. Albert opened the door.
“Hey, Mr. Mason,” said John. He looked a little sweaty, as if he’d been riding a long time. “Is Abbie here with you?”
“Yes, she is,” said Albert. “Do come in.”
“John Marston,” said Abigail, a kind of angry relief as they greeted at the door. They held both their hands together, but the intimacy between them was suppressed, it wasn’t free. He knew from what Arthur had told him, they’d been having a lot of problems, but they were working through it. “Where’s Arthur?” she said.
“Don’t worry,” said John. “Arthur is fine. He just had to run an errand.”
“In the middle of the night?”
“He said it would be best. He went back to Shady Belle.”
“Shady Belle,” said Albert. “Did he say why?” He felt hypertensive all of sudden. Jack stirred in his sleep. He glanced on instinct.
“He’s going to see Mary Beth,” said John. He removed his hat. “He’s giving her some money, so she can leave.”
“You shouldn’t’ve let him go alone,” said Abigail.
“He’s better all by himself,” said John. He looked at Albert, his scars muffled in the dim light of the room. “It’ll be be okay. He’ll be back before morning. Told me to tell you not to wait up.”
Albert laughed to himself, looked down at his feet.
“Fat chance of that,” said Abigail. “Albert, you gonna be okay?”
“I’ll be fine,” he said. “Take Jack and go on back to your room.”
“Okay,” she said. She went over to the couch, scooped up the boy and he sort of flopped over her shoulder as a rag doll. He made little chewing motions with his jaw and ground his teeth in his sleep.
“I hate that,” said John. “Why does he do that?”
“Because you do it,” said Abigail. “Or, you used to.”
“I used to grind my teeth in my sleep?”
“Used to wake me up some nights, when we was in Denver City.”
“Shit,” said John, holding the door for her. “I didn’t know.”
“Thank you, Albert,” said Abigail. “For everything. We’ll see you in the morning.”
“Yes, of course,” said Albert, smiling. He handed her the parasol. Then, “John?”
“Yeah.”
“Did you—well, how did it go, on the job?”
John smiled and placed his hat back atop his head. “It went good,” he said. “We got the bastard alive, made some money. Arthur is fine, not a scratch on him. I swear.”
“Splendid,” said Albert. “I was just wondering.”
They said goodnight. John and Abigail went back to their room. Albert put on his jacket and his shoes and went down to the bar. There was nothing else to do. He ordered a whiskey and sat alone in a booth by the window. There was a man playing something on the piano and two woman dancing while drunk and smoking clove cigarettes. It reminded him of college. The bartender was throwing somebody out. There were enough people there, even after midnight, Albert blended right in.
Back at camp, it was very dark. The sky was purple, and it was a full moon, swimming in stars. Arthur had tied up Amelia somewhere far enough from the perimeter of Shady Belle that nobody would see her. Her white coat made her a most recognizable filly. He couldn’t risk it.
Midnight in the swamp, he heard Sadie playing on her harmonica. This meant there were not many about, as she would only play under the illustion of solitude. She was sitting in a chair on the edge of the river, near Strauss’s set-up, but Strauss was not around. He walked right up to her. She looked at him, set down the instrument and appeared embarrassed.
“That’s real nice,” he said. “You should play it more.”
“Arthur,” she said. “I heard rumors you was leaving.”
“I am,” he said. “I just came back first. I gotta find Mary Beth. Do you know where she is?”
“The house, I expect,” said Sadie. “She was in Rhodes for most of the day, but her and Tilly are back now.”
Arthur glanced up at the big old house, looming, haunted and alive with candles in the windows. “Is Dutch here.”
“I don’t think so,” said Sadie. “He left a little while ago.”
“Where’d he go?” said Arthur, lighting a cigarette.
“Not sure. But he was alone.”
Arthur smoked. This didn’t sit right. “Sadie, when I go, John’s coming, too. Things are gonna get…confusing.”
“Yeah, I know,” said Sadie. She pocketed the harmonica. “Me and Charles already talked about it. We’re looking after the vulnerable. Don’t you worry about that. You done your time.”
“Thank you,” said Arthur, thinking of Albert. “Thank you, Sadie.”
“So,” she said. She placed a cigarette between her lips but did not light it. “Who is she?”
“Excuse me?” said Arthur.
Somebody was coming up then, out of the darkness. Upon squinting, Arthur saw that it was Mary Beth. She wore a dark scarf over her hair. She was holding a basket full of orchids. “Arthur?” she said. “What are you doing here?”
Arthur tossed his cigarette and went toward her with conviction. “I came to see you.”
“Me? Why?”
“I gotta give you something,” he said. He tipped his hat to Sadie, then him and Mary Beth walked up the river bank some until it was they felt completely alone. The fireflies flickered over the tall grasses. The moonlight on the water was bright and still. Everywhere you could hear the sounds of the swamp in the evening, the bugs most of all. Arthur reached into his satchel. He withdrew a thick envelope and gave it to her. Enclosed within was $800.
“What’s this?” she said.
“It’s a gift, from me. A thank you, for taking care of me in my time of need, for being such a good friend. I’m going away, Mary Beth. Like you said I should. With Albert. I’m leaving the gang.”
She looked away, drew quiet. She did not seem surprised, only maybe, a little sad. “I figured as much,” she said, pushing back the scarf, revealing her curly hair, unkempt that night. “I talked to Albert, at the opening the other night. I know about his mother and the place in California.”
He sighed, looking at her, his hand on her shoulder. “I came back tonight to give you that envelope.”
“What is it?” she said. She set down the basket, opened the flap. “Arthur, is this money?”
“Yes,” he said. He removed his hat. “As much as I can spare. I want you to take it and get the hell out of here. Live your dream. Write your books. This ain’t no life for a woman such as you.”
“Arthur, I—” She was counting through the bills with her fingers. “This is too much. I can’t accept.”
“I don’t need it,” said Arthur. “You do.”
She looked up at him, her eyes very clear and reflecting all that light from the moon. They were filling with tears. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
She looked down again, at the envelope. Then she placed it in her pocket. She embraced him. He held her on the river bank. “Thank you,” she said, sniffling into his vest. “I will put it to good use. I'll miss you, Arthur. I'll miss everybody, but I'll miss you most.”
“I know,” said Arthur into her hair. “I’ll miss you, too.”
She wiped her nose on her sleeve, smiled as they parted. She said, “It’s been quite a time.”
“Yes it has.”
“When you get to California, will you have an address?”
“I will,” said Arthur. “I wrote it in a letter there, inside that envelope. When you get wherever it is you’ll be for a while, you write to me. I wanna know you’re safe.”
“What about John and Abigail, and Jack?”
“They’re coming with us,” said Arthur. “You can come, too, if you want, Mary Beth. The invitation is open. But even if you don’t, that money is an unconditional gift. You owe me nothing. You go where you want, do what you want.”
She looked very starstruck, filled with longing. He knew she would not come. He knew that being close to him would hurt, and it was for the best that they part. She just smiled. “Thank you, Arthur. I think I’ll still go north.”
“Wisconsin?”
“Yes, sir,” she said. “Madison, maybe.”
“I wish you luck.” He covered her hands in his. “Be careful. Be quiet. Don’t get caught with your hand in nobody’s pocket. You hear?”
“I hear.”
“Good,” said Arthur. “I know you’ll be okay. You’re a smart woman.”
“I try.”
“I gotta go,” said Arthur. “We’re heading out by train in a week’s time. But until then, we’ll be lying low.”
“I’ll write you,” she said. “When I get up north. I promise.”
Arthur placed his hat back atop his head. “Okay, Mary Beth.”
They hugged one more time and said goodbye. Mary Beth went back to the house. Arthur stood up the river bank a little ways from Sadie who had once again begun to play her harmonica. It was the harmonica he had found for her, in a ridge line shack somewhere over in West Elizabeth so many months before. She looked at him, didn’t stop this time. She just nodded. She paused once to salute him as he went. He took one last look at the house and the camp and all of its murky innocence.
Albert was on his second glass of whiskey. He was reading the newspaper. It was an older edition, whatever the bartender had lying around. There was a story about a bank robbery, way up in Valentine. For a moment, he wondered. He lit a cigarette, which he ashed into a crystal ash tray. Thus far, nobody had approached him but saloon girls, looking for his order and lively conversation. Albert was a staple figure in the saloon by now. They asked him about Arthur. He said, “Arthur is well. Arthur will be back soon.” They all loved Arthur, too, though Arthur was more gruff and more likely to smile and nod than he was to chat. They still liked him. They liked that kind of stoicism in a man. It was reassuring. Made him seem strong. Albert understood in his heart of hearts that they all knew the truth by now, about him and Arthur. They must have, and yet, they did not judge him. They did not even ask.
“Howdy,” said a man’s voice, out of nowhere.
Albert looked up and saw a stranger.
“Hello,” he said.
The piano still went on in the background, real loud. The place was not raucous but it was bustling enough. The stranger was very tall, as tall as Arthur, thought Albert, perhaps even taller. He slid into the booth, across from Albert and folded his hands on the table. It was a presumptuous move. Albert wondered if, for a second, he was supposed to recognize him. He did not. The stranger removed his hat, had black hair curling behind his ears. He wore many gold rings, and at first, Arthur took him for a particularly ostentatious dandy, but upon further inspection, noticed the wear in knuckles, and the ornate engravings upon the handle of the gun in his belt. They were a lot like the ornate engravings in the various handles of Arthur’s guns.
Albert set down his paper. It was warm in the saloon, a little stuffy. He wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. “How may I help you?” he said.
“It’s sure hot in here,” said the stranger. He adjusted his collar. “You’d think they’d open a…window or something.”
“Yes,” said Albert. “You’d think.” He waited patiently for the man to explain himself. He didn’t seem particularly drunk, or lost. “I’m sorry. Do I know you?”
“Are you Albert Mason?” said the man. “The nature photographer?”
Surprised, Albert straightened up off the table. “I am,” said Albert.
“I thought so,” said the man, grinning, nodding. “What a wonderful happenstance, you should be here, tonight.”
“I suppose,” said Albert. “Were you at the opening, the other night? I don’t remember you, though it’s possible I did not meet everyone.”
“No, I was not,” said the man. “But one of my associates was there. He mentioned you, and your subject matter.”
“I see,” said Albert. “Well, thank you for stopping by, saying hello.” He smiled.
“You’re welcome,” said the man, looking around. He beckoned to one of the saloon girls, ordered a glass of scotch. The girl who came over, Josie, blushed upon his flirtatious charm. Then she went away, and the stranger sipped. “So, what’s Albert Mason, nature photographer, doing here in the saloon all alone on this fine evening?”
Albert set down his paper, folded it in half. Realizing he had been sucked into some sort of conversation with a man he did not know, he did his best to engage his social graces. Truth be told, however, they were rusty, and he was tired. “Nothing much,” he said. “Just enjoying a drink.”
“You live around here?”
“I do,” said Albert. “But only on a temporary basis.”
“Is that right?” said the man. Josie came back with the scotch. The man thanked her and called her my dear. “Where you headed?” said the man, sipping, once more. “I mean, when you leave St. Denis.”
“West,” said Albert, growing suspicious now. It was an odd question.
“West, huh?” said the stranger, stretching out his arms, casually resting them along the back of the bench. He had an enormous wingspan. Like the condors Albert had once photographed in Tallahassee. “Business or pleasure?”
“A bit of both,” said Albert. He folded his hands on the table. “Before we continue, might I ask your name? I mean, if we’re going to sit here, having a conversation at the saloon, I should know what to call you.”
“Oh,” said the man. He lit a cigar from his pocket. Puffed off the end. “I thought I’d introduced myself.”
“No, you did not.”
“My name is Dutch.” He placed the cigar between his teeth, held out his hand for a shake, “van der Linde. It’s extremely nice to meet you, Mr. Mason.”
“Ever since we fled Blackwater,” Abigail said that night, back in the room, the moonlight pitching through the windows, “Dutch has been…different. John, I’m scared.” Her hands were shaking as she smoked. They had been talking about the plan, going west to California. Jack was asleep on the bed. “I am ready to go, John. You know I am. But I’m scared that Dutch might view this as some sort of…mutiny. He ain’t stable. He’ll threaten your lives. You and Arthur. If he has his way, I just—”
“Hosea already knows the truth,” said John. “About Albert, and about us leaving, everything. He already gave Arthur his blessing.”
They could hear the piano downstairs. It was a pretty song, slow and dark.“You think Hosea can make Dutch see reason then?”
“Maybe,” said John. “It always was that way, growing up around them.”
“I don’t know,” she went on, smoking. “Maybe. I just—I still worry. I’m worried about you.”
“I know,” said John. “I know you are. Abbie, look at me.”
She was gazing at him then, stars in her eyes. She was softening. “You ain’t gonna flake out this time,” she said. “I can see it, in your eyes. That’s scaring me, too.”
“Why?” said John. “I swear it, Abbie. It’s different this time. I’m with you now. I promise. You and Jack.”
“How?” she said. “Why? What happened?”
John shrugged. He took the cigarette out of her hand and set it in the ash tray. Then he gathered her hands up into his own, so chivalrously, and he held her knuckles to his lips. “A lot of things happened,” he said. “Arthur helped me see all them things I done, bad things. To you and to Jack. I’m sorry. I’m gonna earn back your trust, if it’s the goddam last thing I do. And Arthur, he’s gonna help us out. The two of us, we got plans for once we get out there, maybe go in on a livery or something.”
“A livery?”
“Sure,” said John, squeezing her hands tightly. “Ain’t nobody better with horses than Arthur. And I ain’t so bad.”
“No, you ain’t,” said Abigail.
“It’s settled, okay?” said John. “You don’t need not worry. No more being afraid. I got this. Trust me, Abbie. Please, try. We’re leaving by train in one week.”
“What’ll we do till then?”
“Lay low,” said John. “We’ll stay here. Dutch ain’t gonna interfere. I’m gonna go back to Shady Belle myself, once, maybe in a couple days when things quiet down, get whatever it is we left back there, all our money. I’ll be real quiet about it, and then I’ll be back, and then we’ll disappear.”
“Disappear,” said Abigail.
“Go west,” said John. “I should have said, Go west. We ain’t disappearing. That’s Dutch’s point of view. From our point of view, we ain’t disappearing, Abbie. We’re starting over. Starting fresh. A new life.” He was smiling, real bright, and she believed him, because she wanted to.
Many years later, living in a humble ranch home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Abigail would never again feel the unrelenting chill of winter in her bones, and she would drink French wine while wearing a long dress in late summer and remember how, amidst a life of scoundrels and sin, she had still somehow managed to surround herself with gentlemen.

Summary:
The footprints in the sand carries the existence of our adored past, but the waves full of painful memories has swept it all away...
Only the moon and the starless sky was present that time.
It was cold, so cold that the temperature feel like it was squeezing him, from his flesh reaching through his nerves and bones, leaving him breathless, but it felt right.
Water fills his insides as he let himself drown in the salty water. His hazy eyes watched the light of the moonlight reflect on the sea, imitating a barrier between his pathetic life and the afterlife he desired. He's so close to it, as he could feel the corner of his sight blurring. His insides are screaming in the burning sensation as they're about to be filled with ice prickling water.
So cold, very cold.
Just how it should be.
He closes his eyes, and let the flash of white overcome him and his senses.
But before that happens, a certain red stained all of it.
“Oh…”
.
.
.
THUD!
That’s the last thing he heard before his vision was turned into complete darkness. He didn't know what happened after that. There's nothing to see, nothing to hear, just blankness. Had death finally consumed him whole, and threw him away from his miserable life?
No… that felt too cheap.
He isn’t sure where he is today, but the next thing he knew, he was staring upward at a white ceiling with a fan rotating to circulate fresh air.
‘I’m not dead.’
“Hey.” A voice calls from behind him.
He looks at the corner of his eye to see his company, just to make sure his guess was right. Red eyes that resembled the warm hues of the sunset in some sky; it felt so warm and comforting. Its radiance was soft, as if those eyes could relax Dazai just by looking at him. The two kept staring at each other, as Dazai smiles while turning his head, twisting his body for a bit before greeting back, “Hey-” Only to feel a sharp pain pricked somewhere in his brain “Ow, ow it hurts…” The brunet mumbled, massaging his temples.
“Careful. What happened almost caused you to get paralyzed.” The other man sighs as he inserts a bookmark in the book and scooted closer to inspect the injured man. Dazai gave out a chuckle and was about to retort to assure the man he's alright, but his breath was caught in the air when he felt a thumb caressing his unbandaged cheek. He bit his lower lip before they hesitantly turned upward into a faint smile. “I'm fine, Odasaku. Of all people, you should be the one who knows that a mere slip wouldn't kill me.”
The red head looks at him with disbelief, “You never know Dazai.“ he says, his voice bold and strict. The younger man frowned at him, much like a toddler whose toy was taken. But can you blame Oda? Dazai might have survived all the punishments of his past mishaps or attempts, but in the end Dazai is still a human, born with flesh and bones just like the rest of them. Not immortal nor a being that could regenerate his wounds quickly. Granted, his body does have an impressive remark on healing himself for such a surprising speed but there would always be the time Dazai won't be so lucky.
“Geez Odasaku, I told you, I’m fine and as you can see, I'm well.” he opened his arms widely for emphasis, but was only given a raise of a brow in reply. “Though my heads hurts a little- but my body can manage.” A grin was etched on his face to assure his companion, and Dazai quickly changed the subject. “Getting gloomy when I just woke up, no? Let talk about something else shall we?” He then points at the hardcover book Oda was holding, “All those books that you've been reading, are they for your upcoming program?” He inspects the title as the red head nods. “My, you seemed excited to become a teacher~”
“Student teacher.” He corrects the brunet who sits up, “It'll just last two months. Starting from the second half of the semester until the last week of your third quarter. After that I'll go back to college and finish my degree.” Oda adds.
“Wahh!” Dazai immediately twisted away to raise his arm to cover his eyelids and make a dramatic fuss, ”Odasaku will leave me alone and rot at campus all by myself. So heartless and cruel of you, leaving your dear friend and lover like this. This pain is much worse than being tortured to sweet, blissful death-”
And he let out another exaggerated cry when a throb pulsed through his head.
The older could only watch the younger complain about his concussion without giving any help - until he decided to hold on Dazai's chin so he could reprimand him with a stern glare, “Maybe if you didn't keep yourself getting injured. We’re both college students attending the same campus now.”
Dazai opened his mouth, ready to protest, but when no words are able to form to escape his mouth, he immediately closes it before puffing his cheeks and shot back, “So mean, Odasaku-sensei.”
That phrase causes butterflies in Oda’s stomach, but he doesn't want to cater to those thoughts for now. He gently pinches Dazai's cheek, who whines in protest. “Don't call me like that when we're both alone.” Despite the warning, Dazai gripped Oda's hand and smirked mischievously, “What was that, Odasaku- sen~sei~?”
Oda pinches a bit harder and Dazai yelps, “What am I gonna do with you?” the older sighs.
When he stops pinching, they stare into each other’s eyes. Dazai's pupils traced every feature of his partners face looking for slightest bits of changes other than the heavy eyebags that took toll on his skin - probably for staying up to check on him, Dazai deducts. But that mere thought gave a fluttering feeling in Dazai's chest.
At the same time, Oda just gazed at him tenderly, but noticed a little bit of redness in younger man’s cheek. Oda takes the initiative and leans towards Dazai's face to give a chaste peck on his crimson skin as an apology. When he pulls away, Dazai sits up properly and snakes his arms around Oda's neck while the latter placed the book on the nearest coffee table and lets the brunet take the initiative. Dazai then tries to catch his lips and soon after, their lips connect and share a innocent kiss, hopefully to express the words ‘I miss you’ and ‘I'm so worried’ through the contact. Dazai tilts his head to coax himself closer -
That is, until another pulse from his migraine hit him. He quickly pulled away, yelping a little while massaging the sides of his temples to relieve the pressure a little. “Rest for a bit, Dazai.” Oda instructs as he let out a deep exhale, “I'll let the doctor know you're awake.” He stands up, only for a hand to grab his wrist.
“Stay for a bit will you? “ the brunet pouts. “I don't know how long I was unconscious and I don't want to see the doctors immediately after I just woke up from that cold, soundless sleep.” He gently adjusted himself to the side, careful not to trigger anymore pain and extended his arm out, “Come here and snuggle with me, Sensei!”
“Stop that.”
“Never~” Dazai continued to tease.
Then Oda gave another glare down at the floor and was silent, but Dazai shyly looked up at him like a stray kitten.
“Please?”
Oda huffs in amusement as he shook his head. Honestly speaking, Oda doesn't have the will to refuse his lover, even if he didn't have to put up that adorable act. “Fine.” he declares as he walks back towards the brunet who smiles in victory.
“Okay but after ten minutes, I'll call the doctor.”
“An hour!”
“Dazai… Twenty minutes or I won’t make curry for you.” Oda argues.
“Ehhhh?! Fine.” He scoffs childishly.
When he walked towards the brunet, Dazai asks “That look on your face… Did I worry you too much?” he smiled as he watched Oda sit on the bed, the bedframe underneath squeaking in protest. When Oda’s weight sinks in the mattress, he helped Dazai settle in next to him, careful not to bump the syringes and pads connecting Dazai to the heart monitor and IV tube. Lanky arms wrap around Oda’s chest while the redhead gripped Dazai’s hips and pulled his body closer. Dazai sighed with bliss as he let his head rest on Oda’s chest. “See? I'm still warm Odasaku. I'm still breathing, alive. You don't have to worry.”
“Well you did fell on the stairs four steps away from the ground.” His companion says in defense, resting his cheek on Dazai's hair. “That alone is concerning and you can risk yourself bumping your head pretty hard and having an internal hemorrhage. Thankfully you didn’t break your spine either, since-”
“Odasaku,” the brunet stops him, “How many times do I need to tell you that I won't die that easily? Geez, a mere trip down the stairs is an embarrassing death after all. I don't want the neighbors to brand me, Dazai Osamu, the bandaged man that died because he fell of the stairs. I would be the laughing stock of the century if that happens!” He huffs, grimacing at the thought. “I would rather have a sweet romantic suicide with a beautiful lady. That alone is poetic.”
Dazai really likes to slip words in his tounge like water without thinking any consideration, Oda thought with a grimace on his face. Despite Oda getting used to hear his whims about suicide and tantalized about death accepting him from this ‘miserable cruel’ world, Oda can't shake off the thought of seeing Dazai in his deathbed. Even with spending much of his time lecturing the young man, the words coming from the third year’s mouth stings painfully in Oda’s chest.
But despite it all, he still continues to be with him, willingly to check up on him and make sure he's not alone because-
Because he loves Dazai.
“I'm just scared to lose you…” he finally admits under his breath.
“Not like last time...”
None of them uttered out a word after, Oda was only waiting for Dazai's reply, wanting to know how he would react, but knowing Dazai, he won't show anything at all. Dazai's breath was stuck in the air, unable to reply to his confession. He's glad that Oda cannot see his expression at this angle or he would probably jerk away from him if this man had witnessed the redness of his ashamed face. When he felt the grip on his waist tighten, he scooted closer and hid his face in Oda’s chest. “Heh, silly Odasaku…”
They continued to stay like that for minutes, Oda keeps stroking the fringes of his hair, Dazai keep listening to Oda's heartbeats pounding, thump thumping in his ears. They chatted about him being unconscious for two days, then onto the news that's happening in their neighborhood. The middle school graduates, including Nakajima and Tanizaki, were becoming first years and they would soon be Dazai's schoolmates. The other piece of news they discussed is that Kunikida, one of Dazai's ex-classmates, was offered a student teacher position at Dazai’s school by none other than Fukuzawa himself. But the big news they talked about was-
“What?!” Dazai exclaimed.
Oda had to live at his university for a whole semester - and to make matters worse, he was going to be leaving tomorrow. “Just how? The semester doesn’t start for another week or so, right? I thought you're okay with commuting?”
“It was sudden, but Natsume-sensei offered me to stay at his place for the time being since he thinks it'll be more practical and I would lose a lot of opportunities just by traveling everyday for a long period of time.” he kissed Dazai's cheek to lighten up his mood and assure him. “I'll be back next month. Don't worry.”
“Hmph, fine. But you better bring me something when you return back home.”
Home…
Those words make Oda chuckle as adoration bubbled up his chest, “Will do, Dazai.” As his lips pressed against his forehead.
This continued on until Dazai looks out the window and sees the view of the ocean from afar. A thought came into his mind, but Dazai hesitates if he should even mention it. But then again, this would be the last day the two of them would see each other until three whole months passed.
“Odasaku.”
So it doesn't hurt to try.
“You know, I made you worry for no good reason.” He starts, shifting from his position to meet his lover’s gaze. Oda looks at him with a brow raised. He smirks, “As an apology, I'll be doing you the favor of going to the beach with me. I think I’ll get discharged today anyway, since I think I'm a good shape now. It's been a while since we visited there together, what do you think?”
The older blinks at his partner’s invitation and looks at the ceiling to ponder. “Well…”
“Beside, I won't see you in months.” He adds, hoping to finally be able to convince the man besides him.
The redhead took a deep breath. He seems to be contemplating with his thoughts while Dazai waited for a reply, but then he felt Oda pulling away from his grasp. Oda stands up and fixes the collar of his shirt, “I'll go fetch the doctor then. I'll be back quick.” he turns around and gave a small tilt to check on Dazai, who just smiles.
“Hurry up then, while the sun is still up.”
----
Only the moon and the starless sky was present that time.
---
Scarlet eyes worriedly trailed behind the lean figure as Oda watched the boy excitedly take of his shoes while examining the beach. Fortunately, the doctor said Dazai was free to leave, but has to be cautious, not move his head so much, and not perform any heavy activities for quite awhile. “Be careful.“ he reminded the exuberant Dazai.
But his words seems to be ignored in the playful breeze as Dazai turns around, waving at Oda and shouting “Odasakuuuu!” before running back to him and yanking his arm to invite themselves closer to the sea. “Come on! You can't have me just enjoying the sea by myself! I would look stupid.”
“But the doctors said that you're not allowed to move your head too much-” he was interrupted when a finger was pressed against his lips.
“Oh hush and do me a favor by not reminding me about those cruel instructions by that doctor, and let me enjoy this last day of summer with you for a bit, okay?” Dazai fumed, but when he notice the darkness of Oda’s expression, his face shifted into worry.
Oda… Oda wanted to say no, the anxiety that's pounding inside his chest was demanding for him to decline and be strict. He wished to say he's already being considerate, escorting him to the beach despite these disturbing emotions that crawling up his spine. Yet he doesn't want Dazai to be upset, but in the end, he was afraid of both outcomes. He thought of himself as nothing but a coward.
A coward that let those horrible memories of the two of them being wrapped by the ocean’s deadly embrace be the sole reason behind why he’s scared to visit the place they used to favor so dearly.
Dazai, the genius that he is, seems to read the toll on his mind. So his expression softened, “Hey.” He calls out to Oda, who blinks and then stares toward him in acknowledgement. “I told you, this is my apology for falling down the stairs, so I promise I won't do anything stupid or do things that will make you even more worried, alright?” He smiles, brown eyes softly gazing at his partner.
The older man studies Dazai before he finally tilts his head down in defeat just by seeing those big eyes, as stubborn as they were soft. “Fine.” He saids before adding, “But if I see any small signs that you’re getting worse, we'll go home immediately.”
Dazai's mouth forms a grin of agreement and continues to drag his boyfriend along the shore. Oda watched Dazai - his face beams in delight, so bright and cheerful, but is he feeling happiness in his heart right now? Is he truly happy? He doesn't want to ask, but he wants to believe it. And if it was reality, then Oda wishes for him to hold unto those emotions till the very end.
The shore is where they're free, like the birds that flew away from the depressing earth and bathed in the warm glow of the radiant sun. This feeling of warmth and freedom is what he missed years ago.
Until that tale of a boy whose blood spilled over the shore would never leave his mind, no matter how hard he tried. In the end, those tales would only lead him to break.
But he wants to throw it all over the edge of the horizon and let him forget the uneasiness in his chest. The echoing reverie to see Dazai smiling again caused determination to well up inside him. If he could treasure and let that smile last, where his skin radiates brighter than the sun, those chocolate eyes that twinkled like the liquid gems of the sea, then Oda would do his damndest to suppress the dark memories and his overall agitation that has been mocking him.
A quiet smile etched up in Oda's usual expressionless face as he cherished the moment.
When they're close to the ocean water, the brunet lets go of Oda's arm, scoops a handful of water and throws it towards his companion.
“H-hey!”
Dazai lets out a childish giggle from seeing Oda glare at him. Rolling his eyes, he starts to take off his shoes and decides to play along with the younger’s antics. “So you want to play it that way, huh?” He lets his voice sound murky and dark, like an overly dramatic villain.
“Uh oh. Sensei’s getting mad.” Dazai teased as he moved away urgently from Oda’s impending wrath. When Oda finally placed his shoes and socks on the beach, along with Dazai’s necessities, away from the ocean’s reach, he followed his partner with a smirk on his face. “Are you testing me?”
“And what if I am?” Dazai grinned, “Bring me your best shot Odasaku!”
Then Oda rushed towards Dazai, pulling him close in a tight embrace as their laughs echoed across the neverending sea.
------
His throat hurt, desperate as he gasped for air…
It feels so hard to breathe, his lungs are burning, it all felt dry.
He hears someone screaming, shouting, calling, its voice clawing deep in the night, but he doesn't realize who and why.
But when scarlet red was stained in his palm that has slowly been seeping away towards the water, a sign of a promising fate that would end in tragedy, he knew why.
It was his own bruised throat and no one else but himself who has been screaming underneath the dark night.
And the whole village were able hear the mournful screams of Oda Sakunosuke as he desperately tried to save Dazai Osamu, the boy whose blood was spilled in the never ending sea.
------
Eventually, darkness came and the moon has replaced the sun, soft light reflecting off the sparkling water of the ocean. The breeze was chilly as it softly caressed their skin that was still damp with the ocean water. Their fingers are laced while their bare feet sink into the sand as they walked around the shore.
They quietly talked about small things, between hushed voices and whispers, their fingers playing with each other as their conversation leads them nowhere in particular. They let themselves be steered away from the cruel reminder of time’s existence, away from reality, just away from everything to forget the burden in their outside worlds. They revelled in the normalcy as young adults who just wanted to be together, and enjoy each other’s presence.
But now that it's dark, it feels like they're slowly breaking away from their own illusions.
So they talked and talked as if tomorrow would never come.
Until they finally have nothing to say to each other anymore, and only the rushing water singing a soft melody to accompany the evening air could be heard. Their arms are close as if they could feel each other's pulse, both are alive and well. Dazai watches the waves reaching towards them, occasionally kicking the salty liquid half-heartedly for amusement, while Oda's eyes travels at him. Both men are buried their own thoughts.
If Oda wants to guess what's going inside Dazai's mind, it would probably be about his fascination about suicide.
Drowning is the method he always favored, Oda know this, it pains him to say it but he has witnessed it many times before. Dazai told him that whenever he sees the beach, it feels like an open gate for him to escape his way to escape reality. The place where he looks upon to to let his thoughts be free within the wind and a place where he can enjoy himself.
A place where he would marry death.
Oda blinks for a moment as they halt their movements, none of them utter a single word but Oda stared at Dazai expectantly. The brunet eyes however, despite uninterested, traveled towards the cliff making Oda followed his direction of sight.
Oda would admit that there was something that always worried him about Dazai. Dazai’s mind was so sharp and intelligent, far more than was good for his sake, and it reminded him of a cliff towering over the sea, enticing humans to explore it but like a promising death and despair should they make one false move, even if it was to turn back and flee. Breaking the wild silence, Dazai finally mutters, "It's been eight years since we both visited here, no?" Oda was only able to hum in reply. "Eight years..." He repeats, as if he trying to properly taste of those words in his mouth. Before the older has the chance to interrupt, the other continues to speak, "Since then, everyone treated me differently. People started to be distant. They're always worried, they think that I could blame them. Though I'm not sorry, either. After all, even I wanted to be distant away from myself." 'Away from this world...' It was unspoken but nevertheless, Oda can hear it out loud in the heavy air. "Dazai-"
He interjects with a small voice, "But you..." He pauses, biting his lip until he was able to form the proper words , "You treated me the same. You always gave me normalcy, no matter what." “Despite this disturbing tendencies of mine, you still accept me as who I am.” But then, Dazai turned his head and faced him as he gave an unpleasant stare, almost starring past Oda. "If I wanted to be honest Odasaku, I want to read all the pages of your book to understand." Oda felt his fingers were gripped tightly as if they would slip in mere seconds away in his grasp the moment it loosens.
“What don't you understand?” He asked, rubbing his calloused thumb at Dazai's to provide comfort, gesturing him to tell his thoughts out and not to be afraid to speak the truth.
“I…” His voice trails off. Eyes watching their laced fingers for an encouragement.
“You still kept seeing it right? That moment where I almost died.” he breathed out.
Oda will always remember, he will never forget how terrified he is to see Dazai in the bed, heart weakly beating, skin colder and whiter than the snow of winter. How everyday it pains him to see that time, when his life was held by a single thread, ready to snap both Dazai's life and Oda's sanity.
Dazai's eyes looked deeply into his, searching for a sign if he should stop or not. Oda doesn't speak but he nod to beckon the younger to continue.
“Since then, you hated going here because you always remembered, and despite knowing that, I was still selfish and asked you to go with the beach with me. And you made an effort to grant this wish of mine and went along.” He breathed out as he finally asks.
“How do you do it?”
He was gazing so deep into Oda's eyes, that he flinched for a bit when he felt a warm hand stroke his cheek and brush the hair on his face. He really doesn't understand why; it was so foreign, so new no matter how many time he did that. Regardless, it was still comforting and serene.
Oda glances down before he looks back at him again and gave out a small smile. “We are all humans. All born with our own flaws and our selfishness. I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, but whatever selfishness and flaws you have, it still adds the fact that it made you the Dazai Osamu I fell in love with.” He admits.
Dazai pretended not to be flustered but the redness of his cheeks betrayed him until Oda casually added, “For me, one of my selfish desires is to see you smile and grant the promise I made.”
His eyes widen, mouth hanging, If the brunet's face was dusted with red before, then his face right now is almost at a tint of a tomato.
“Seeing you happy today is enough for me.” Oda continues, leaving Dazai breathless. It wasn’t the first not going to be the last, but...
Never once can a person leave the garrulous Dazai hanging wordless. He cannot think of any befitting words to shoot back at his lover. But he still felt obligated to continue the conversation. In the end, after what felt like an eternity, he was only able to say
“Thank you.”
The voice was low and faint but the wind managed to carry it to Oda’s ears.
“I had fun today.” Dazai murmured, after having the courage met those scarlet eyes once more with his, a sincere smile etched in his face as the dimples pops out of his cheek to signify how genuine his expression is. “And I'm glad you have as well.”
Oda can can feel the tip of his ears burning and was only able to pat Dazai in the head. “I'm glad. After all, anything we do together is fun.”
Dazai huffed out a breath and forged a knowing smirk, “Not as fun as yourself.” He reciprocated.
Oda was only able to raise a brow out of confusion, not knowing what he meant as the other could only laugh in delight. Dazai pinched Oda's nose while the latter grunted in protest.
After rubbing his nose, Oda noticed the full moon staring up at the sky. Dazai followed his gaze and mumbled, “Time really flies fast, huh. It feels like yesterday we were just kids playing here with Ango, and I just woke up a minute ago from being unconscious. But the reality is, many years have already passed since then.”
Oda can only hums in concordance. “It's getting late.” He finally reminds Dazai and himself about the unfortunate reality of the world they live in. “It's time to go home.” He sighs as he watched Dazai groaning in disapproval.
“I don't wannaaa.” He whined, eyes begging for consideration from Oda. He clings on the Oda’s arm and continues protesting. “Besides, where Oda is is my home.” He declares but after a few seconds of a starting match with his boyfriend, he finally, reluctantly, agrees.
“Come on. Let's go at your place and get you showered.” Oda then walks, escorting Dazai towards the exit where the main street is. The prodigy walks in tow, a mischievous smile on his face. “Aww, then why not we shower together so you can warm me up?” His voice tingles with a certain promise.
Oda, however, chuckles at the sly suggestion, “That is nice, but I have something else in mind”
“Oh?” Dazai eyes glistened with curiosity. He leans toward Oda's shoulder and pressed his cheek against it affectionately, “This better be interesting since you're able to turn down such an offer. Tell me about it then.”
“Well.“ he paused, and looked around the beach so he could let the revelation of the surprise be dragged on longer. The brunet still saw through his own antics and kept nudging him to go on. Finally, Oda said, “While you're taking a shower, I would prepare a dish I just learned how to make a while ago.”
Dazai tilts his head for emphasis, “Oda will cook something for me! Does it have crab?”
“Crabmeat and Zucchini with Kofuki and homemade mochi.” He announced.
Excitement flashes on Dazai's face as he then took the lead, dragging Oda hurriedly behind him like a child, “Let's hurry then, I’m hungry - and snuggling can come after!”
Those words sowed warmth in Oda's chest.
To see Dazai's heart right now set in the right place, his mind not hidden away in the shadows where his demons kept whispering to him. To be able to witness his genuine smile and hold his now warm hand. It's enough to Oda. Even though he rarely, if ever, displays this sincerity to anyone else, if he kept holding his hand and let him know his presence will always remain there, to encourage him and support him, then maybe he would finally fully open up to them.
They might be back to reality now, where the complicated system of life and all its problems would never change. But there would be a time where they have nowhere else to go but wander aimlessly. Regardless of what life brought them, they will face it nonetheless and survive through the cruel seasons. They will hold each other close and take each other's hand and never let go.
After all, that's their oath towards each other.
--
‘Even if you will drown in your own abyss that will consume you alive… take my hand’
In a small little ward, a young boy vowed a pledge to a dear friend of his, who looks at him with hollow eyes.
‘But what if I don't take it? What if it's all too late?’ He asked, studying his redhead companion carefully. The redhead suddenly grabs his hands, and without hesitation he declared-
‘Then I'll catch you in my arms and won't let you go.’
…
It was a memory that they would forever hold.
For once, light was evident to the young patient’s eyes. For once, he didn't feel alone. For once, he had seen the faint ray of the light . For once, the boy who accepted that he would never be loved believed a promise.
A promise to hold him .
And Oda will stay true to his words, and he will never let go.
Not now...
Not ever.
.
.
.
Sadly though, their paths followed the unpredictable ebb and flow of the stormy waves of life.
And the only certain things within life is the bittersweet endings and broken promises.

What do you think about Reiner being half Marleyan? Being him a dear friend Eren used to look up to, Grisha's ideals and all.
Well, this is something I never expected in this story.
And it’s mostly due to me suspecting he doesn’t have any family to return to because he never mentioned anything, so that angle was moot. Turns out his heritage opens now a brand new question: who’s the father?
For the sake of funny parallolz, my bet is on Captain Magath. Why a parallolz? Because he looks like Keith a lot. The two of then trained recruits quite harshly and reveal a more sensitive side with them. Magath can get friendly with Eldians and Keith has a pathetic side he tries to hide, him believing he was special.
Moreover, Keith made himself famous in chapter 71 for having a crush on Carla:
F*cking friendzoned - Ch. 71
And as such, he tried to honor her wishes when Eren enrolled in the military by discouraging him. If Grisha didn’t come on Paradis, maybe he and Carla could’ve been a thing, who knows? Would be hilarious if the son was Eren Shadis but this isn’t the case.
I’m assuming a similar case happened with Reiner. From the spoilers, we don’t know if he actually doubled in efforts or if someone actually allowed him to pass examinations for whatever reason. Considering what Polko said, maybe he and Reiner were the last ones to be picked for the Armored and Polko eventually got shafted. After all, the main lesson I retained in SnK are that average people, no matter how hard they try, can’t change for the best. So maybe Magath tampered Reiner’s results, because of a blood affiliation.
And Magath has been implied to go into hot corners as well...
The Captain’s suspicious activities - Ch. 93
So yeah, when hot corners are implied in this universe, that clearly means something and you know what. This isn’t new after all: we’ve got child slavery, forced breeding, castration, naked men on chairs/torture devices, prostitution, etc...
So yeah, for a simple parallel, I’m considering the possibility. Either him or something else we haven’t met yet.
Now, Reiner is keeping that away from public ears, meaning nobody else knows about his half-Marlean heritage. It would be funny and kinda sad if his father was the one who trained him.
So where does that connect with Eren?
For starters, Eren holds Reiner as a target even without knowing he’s half-Marlean, because he was the one responsible for destroying his hometown during the fall of Wall Maria.
“But... Some things are gone forever... And they need to pay for that” - Ch. 72 (Illust. Ch. 76)
Eren’s mind is already settled into making his enemies on the other side of the ocean pay. Reiner included. Him learning he has a loving little cousin and a mother, as well as being half-Marlean (read half-scum) would only add salt to the wound. Cherry on the cake if Eren also learns Reiner made his way in the warrior cadets because he’s a good underdog.
Yeah I’m really attempted for Eren to go full-edge and make Reiner suffer personally for this. After all, ANSWERS volume described Eren as holding a grudge against Reiner simply because he made his way through the caste system:
In a nutshell, people who are good in sports are much more popular than those who are not. People are discriminated against if they are bad in sports. At Wall High, the football club, which was believed to be established by the “Pioneer Titan” 100 years ago, is absolutely popular. There are even people who claims that “You are not human if you do not belong to the Football club”. To Eren the Wannabe, Reiner in the football club is the person he wants to exterminate the most! - @plain-dude [Link]
In retrospect it actually makes sense for Reiner: his highschool counterpart made his ranks in the football club, which is the highest caste so he could be seen as human. In this chapter, he does the same to be recognized as a Marlean, a status worthy of basic human rights. He also wants to get the honors as the best son and be acknowledged as a model, mostly so Karina would be proud. Eren absolutely loathes underdogs and was the first one to shit on Jean for that. In this incarnation, he’s considered as a normie who wants to kick things around because he can. Reiner is his target because he’s not only a role-model but plays under the cast system.
And if he’s truly walking on Grisha’s footsteps, well...
Grisha exterminating the Reiss line - Ch. 63
Let’s say it’s bad news for the Braun family.
To be honest, i’m not against these developments. I’d welcome Edgeren in my arms any minute, especially if he pulls out quotes from the highest caliber like:
Marlean scum; they've always felt so fucking safe inside their homes. Surrounded by the possessions gathered their whole lives. So weak, so fragile, they don't deserve a natural death unconsciously waiting to be obliterated by my Freedom! Those parasites think their walls can save them, but I will destroy everything they own and everything they are.
(Yes I found the original one in a vidya game but it was too funny not to share.)

Attention: If You’re Suffering From Muscle Pain of any kind…
“A 5 Minute Routine Twice Per Week That Rids Your Muscles Of The Invisible Ailment That’s Keeping You In Pain”
Discover The Real Cause Of Your Muscle Pain
Dear Friend,
Have injuries, repetitive work, or even sitting too much left you with weak, painful muscles?
Have your problems continued even though you’ve done everything you can to get better?
Have you ever wondered why your muscle problems keep getting worse over time?
It’s because there could be a dangerous condition in your muscles that no one has told you about
And..
Dear Friend,
Have injuries, repetitive work, or even sitting too much left you with weak, painful muscles?
Have your problems continued even though you’ve done everything you can to get better?
Have you ever wondered why your muscle problems keep getting worse over time?
It’s because there could be a dangerous condition in your muscles that no one has told you about
And..
Until You Get Rid Of This Problem It’s Impossible For Your Muscles To Get Better
What is it?
Your problem could be internal scar tissue.
It’s also called fibrosis, fibrotic tissue, muscle adhesions, or dense scar tissue.
I call it..
Sticky muscles.
And if your body doesn’t feel or move the way it used to…
Then it’s almost certain you have it too.
It Doesn’t Show Up On X-rays, MRIs, Or Any Other Medical Tests
Medical imaging is great at finding broken bones, or torn muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
But they don’t reveal the long term problem that hurts your muscles.
The best way to find the dense scar tissue that’s making your muscles sticky is to feel for it by hand.
It’s easy to do with a trick I’m going to show you.
But get this…
Your Sticky Muscles Aren’t Even Part Of The Injury…
The scar tissue that makes your muscles sticky doesn’t happen when you get injured. It’s actually your body’s way of repairing the damage after the fact(1).
After your muscles are damaged your body creates strands of new muscle fibre to protect you. And these new muscle fibres are strong.
But they don’t move very well.
And over time that leads to loss of strength and flexibility, and then pain.
And your body doesn’t have a way of getting rid of this problem on its own.
And unfortunately it just gets worse from there.
Your Sticky Muscles Are Spreading
Your stuck muscles don’t glide across other muscles the way they should. And that forces nearby muscles to work harder to make up for it.
And those muscles get their own internal scar tissue.(3)
So, as you can see… your sticky muscles are like a virus contaminating other muscles around them.
How do I know all this?
Because…
I Had Muscle Problems For Over Two Decades
Out of all my sports injuries my shoulder was causing me the most problems.
Unlike most of my other injuries, my shoulder never suffered what they call “acute injury”.
Meaning I never had an accident.
My shoulder had something possibly worse. Micro tearing.
That comes from thousands of repetitions causing mini injuries that build up to become a big problem.
And what made it worse was…
An Injury That Is Decades Old Is The Hardest To Fix
My shoulder problems went all the way back to my childhood love of throwing a baseball for hours everyday.
But now I’m all grown up..
With a job..
And a family…
And I couldn’t even play a game of catch with my 4 year old son.
I Spent Years Trying To Get Better
I know this sounds pathetic..
But I actually spent years faithfully doing shoulder rehab exercises without getting better.
It did all the exercises given me by my physiotherapist. I also tried routines from youtube, famous blogs, and books written by experts…
With almost no improvement.
When Your Muscles Are Stuck They Can’t Get Better
I now know that it was impossible for my shoulder to get better because my muscles were full of dense fibrous scar tissue… The sticky muscles I’ve been telling you about.
My sticky muscles wouldn’t move correctly..
So all the exercises I was doing were actually making things worse…
Because my muscles were learning to move the wrong way… Instead of the right way.
Your Body Can Feel And Move The Way It Should
Flash forward to today and my shoulder is strong and pain free.
Everything changed when I decided to do my own research.
I read hundreds of articles, books, clinical trials… whatever I could get my hands on.
And I saw as many top rehab professionals as I could… the ones who get paid big bucks to fix high level athletes.
What I discovered is that you can find and get rid of dense scar tissue in your muscles by using…
Your hands!!
And by following the principles that I learned from my research, and with a lot of experimentation..
I was able to do it to myself.
And even though I’m decades past my athletic prime… I found that my body can feel and move better than it has in years.
In a matter of weeks I was able to get back the strength and movement in my shoulder that had been missing for decades. Each session my shoulder felt stronger, and had less pain.
I wasn’t even thinking about it when one day I noticed my shoulder had no pain and felt great.
I immediately put my shoulder through a series of tests to see if this was real.
I could hardly believe it. No pain. No crunching sounds. My should felt and moved better than I could ever remember.
It Works On Any Part Of Your Body That Has Sticky Muscles
Since that experience I’ve used the method on other parts of my body. I used the same two steps to attack other injured areas of my body.
First I find the muscle that’s “infected”.
Then I use a simple technique, which I call the Easy Glide, to break down the dense scar tissue and “unstick” the muscle.
I feel improvements after just the first session.
It Doesn’t Take Long To Feel Like A New Person
You could feel these big changes too.
Your body can move better.
You can feel less pain.
A few sessions is all it takes to start getting your body back.
Like Steve, a young soccer player, who rolled his ankle and needed to get back to playing as soon as he could.
We did two sessions on his calf before he even visited his physiotherapist.
The results?
He performed so well on the therapist’s tests that he was given a simple program and no need for a follow up visit.
These Techniques Can Even Work Miracles On Problems You’ve Had For Years
Nancy, a 39 year old graphic artist, suffered from “humpback neck” also called Dowager’s hump.
She had seen a chiropractor and done posture exercises in the past.. But her “hump” was bigger than ever from too much computer work.
I used the Easy Glide technique to break up the sticky muscles at the top of her back. Within minutes she felt better than ever.
When she got to her feet she was standing a full inch taller!
After just five minutes!
And best of all…
These Techniques Are 100% Safe
Unlike surgery, painkillers, or even some stretches.. These self healing methods can’t harm you.
There are no negative side effects.
And they also don’t aggravate your problem leaving you worse off than before.
In fact it does just the opposite. Each session lessens the amount of sticky tissue in your muscles so that they move and feel better than ever.
Imagine being able to do the things you did before your muscles got sick
With your new pain-free body you can:
Enjoy your favourite sport again
Do your job without the distraction of pain and limitation
Enjoy your life without limits
Take care of yourself or others without beating down your body
Workout and get healthier
For me the best thing was being able to play catch with my energy filled 4-year old.
What will you do with your new pain-free body?
This Is The Only Thing That Worked For Me.. And If You Have Sticky Muscles It Could Work For You Too
On my journey to healing my own body I tried quite a few things:
Chiropractic adjustments
Physiotherapy
Anti-inflammatory diet
Licensed massage
Yoga and stretching
Naturopathic medicine
Functional movement testing
Custom strength programs
I can honestly say that these things were all at least somewhat helpful.
But none of them fixed the real problem that stopped my body from getting better. None of them removed the stickiness in my muscles.
And if you’ve struggled to get over your own pain..
And you want to move like you once did..
Then you will want to get rid of it too.
And now’s your chance by using the simple techniques I used to treat my own sticky muscle problems.
