Got bored

Drew a sad drippy boy (click him, he has tiny details I'm sure Tumblr quality is gonna destroy)
He's an OC of mine from a very vivid dream I had a few months back (yes it's stuck with me this long lol)
Went way too hard on the skull and had no detail spoons left for the clothes lol maybe I'll mess with them a bit later 😆 (his shoulders are killing me help...though I do like my droopy skull)
Anyways he and (we find out much later) his lady love were cursed to be apart. A wizard (?) dude cursed skully man here to sleep for [insert long enough time for bone-ification in the desert] half in and half out of the water, so his face/brain/memories would be gone when he woke up, but his lower half would remain intact under the water (where he now draws his life force from, he can't be out long) so he could move around and speak but be otherwise miserable!...horray!
The one hole in his shirt shows off some mummified muscle still stuck to the bone, he had one arm out of the water so it's gone (he can barley use it) and you can see barnacles and sucker fish bites on the skin his decaying clothes exposed to the water
He and this mermaid have a beef cause he creepily hangs out under the water, just holding still while he recharges, and is just generally in the way.
Yes the mermaid is his cursed lady love
Yes she figures it out eventually
Yes it was a horribly sad dream and it will not leave my brain

Now that I've been looking (like intensly observing with all my interest) this Ahk sculpting process, in actual movie gifs his crown sometimes looks kinda little fake and flimsy? Like the one you have atm looks sturdy and regal and fit for pharaoh and that's how it should look?? The actual film one sometimes look like a /prop/. I wonder if they had several crowns, some are action crowns, some are close-up ones, that would be neat to know
ah man, yall are really making me work for this :D
Tumblr media
(technically shouldn't the chalk drawing on his shirt be mirrored if milo rubbed up on it facing the other direction?) response under a cut cause this will get long ^_^
disclaimer: while i have done both basic welding and small metals soldering in college, i absolutely despised it, so my knowledge on this stuff is limited. that said, my bff made a legit metal ram's horn crown for her large metals final project (i made "knitting vambraces" that could use knitting needles as weapons to kill people, im nothing if not always on brand), and let me tell you...we all tried that crown on (it had a base helmet piece very similar to Ahk's except thicker and round, and then of course the giant ass horns ) and although it fit on most of us and we could wear it, it was SOOOOOO heavy. i have never worn armor, but if its anything like that i dont WANT to lol. tldr - i really hope rami didn't have to wear an actual metal crown that whole movie.
OK so, in defense of NATM costume department, actual ancient egyptian gold work seems to be very broad in terms of structure and thickness. doing just a quick google of the met's gallery we have things like these sandals:

or this...'bowl' (???):

like today we are used to seeing more precise machine/tools made metal work, but back in ancient times things were hand done, there's literally a whole artistic movement post-industrial revolution calling for artisans to return back to the 'hand made' aesthetic where imperfections were seen as a positive rather than a negative. Anyway, no actual Egyptian crowns found in tombs were made of gold, but presuming a hypothetical metal crown would be intended to be worn, I'd imagine it'd be of similar thickness to the sandals or that bowl. versus like...that death mask of king tut which is ALL gold and very obviously not made to be worn by living people, and has a more sculptural quality like this:
Tumblr media
this is actually my favorite style of sculpture, and what i look for in museums when i want drawing/sculpting practice ^_^ (pls dont kill me, but whenever i went to the met i always skipped the egypt wing)(if we’re talking fascination of ancient civilizations, i tended to go for south america)
anyway there's a thickness to these pieces that describes proportion and shape really well, and makes it all look so deceptively 'simple', i love it.

it has classic "appeal" (frank and ollie's word - illusion of life), which is, of course, something humans have been trying to do forever lol. these are intentionally altered from reality to fit a sculptural form. its solid, multidimensional, and the form is described by carefully chosen planes/curves.
versus more intricate items like jewelry or amulets or carved reliefs that look very complex and detailed but lack that 'appeal' that i tend to be drawn to ( i am using quotes around ‘appeal’ bc it is a specific term frank and ollie used to describe a style of art that would otherwise take a very long worded description to hammer out. i believe it could be argued whether the style actually is appealing lol )

so what im saying is, the costume in the movie is done in more of a jewelry style while i am making a sculpture ^_^ and not even a very good sculpture at that, im kind of experimenting as i go after blocking out the proportions, and then dividing it into sections, and now trying to hit that "appeal" in a stylized sort of way. its a method i used to do all the time when making animal/mythological models for the educational program i worked on, but figuring out what ‘appeal’ means in animals and creatures has always been a lot easier for me than humans. especially if the creature or animal has fangs and cute baby eyes.
Tumblr media
ignoring the fact that the face isn’t nearly done, you can see i’ve tried to stick to the basic proportions but my version has edges that are thicker and its not nearly as intricate as the costume :) when i start on finishing the sleeves/cape/belt/face and so on, i’ll do a similar process. im hoping that this level of detail will still be able to show up in a 3D printed miniature.
ANYWAY tumblr cut me off and says im only allowed to post 10 images at a time so i guess this is the end of my lecture :(
sorry if none of this makes any sense, im dredging up decade old art history knowledge here, haha! also i have no clue what happens on movie sets - im 100% digital guys
