I shouldn't have sold my copy of Carry On cuz now I'm doing this hp project it would've been good to revisit that and really dig into how it works as both a self-contained novel and a 'fix-it' for hp ... like there are the basic things i noticed 10 years ago (Penelope being a woc represents all the black Hermione meta/headcanons, the POS mage/headmaster represents criticisms of dumbledores grooming/pushing Harry too hard in the text, etc) but ik there's more id be able to dig into w my modern eye

Reading the cursed child (scorbus, norvelize version in a03). I read the script years ago when I was 11 (funfact it was the first harry potter book I've ever bought). So I'm rereading it again because I have a scorbus brainrot suddenly (11 y/o me shipped Scorpius and Rose so hard but now I grew up let just say my taste had change lmao).
List of thought gonna go longer as I read:
- yo Albus surly personality is basically me when I was 15 it was like looking into a mirror. Hold on there baby I understand you 😭
- I want to write a whole essay on Albus and Harry's relationship. They both are so precious but they just have a hard time with each other.
- Scorpius is the sunshine most sunshine cinnamon role ever. I would kill for him. I would die for him.
- ALL THOSE BULLY BETTER STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY OUTCASTS BABIES.
- “And be my good friend.” what if I die.
- why do people love to torture the cinnamon roll??? I want to hug Scorpio so bad like baby you deserve the moon and the sky and the world. And the fact that he's still trying to be so cheerful and optimistic. THE WORLD DOESN'T DESERVE HIM.
- Albus and Harry's father and son angst is killing me but it is also so delicious I relish in it (it's just so complicated I love it).
- "youre kind, Scorpius. From the depths of your belly, to the tips of your fingers." Is the sweetest thing I've ever heard anyone said. I love this quote so much I want it tattooed on my forehead.
- Again, Scorpius deserve the fucking world.
- Scorpius and Draco's relationship is SO GOOD, SO PURE, SO SOFT. They love each other so much 😭
- brb I'm going to cry at the fact that Dark AU Ron and Hermione die in such a terrible way a few minutes after they finally confess their feelings (they were scared). 😭😭😭😭😭😭
- Snape is so dramatic. Girl "you're giving up your kingdom for Albus... All it takes is one person." he made it sound like they're in a romance fantasy novel (they are).
- Head empty. Scorpius happiest memory with Albus is strong enough for him to produce a patronus.
- Scorpius is once, again, a cutie pie that deserves everything.
- Delphi is more manipulative than I realized when I first read this lmao.
- GIRL the way Albus said that he and Scorpius ran away to start a new life in the muggle world as an excuse — what do you mean you're eloping at 14??? (Out of chronological order but I just remembered this)
- Delphi when I catch you —
- Never thought I'd be rooting for Draco and Harry duo yet here we are (did I say I love Draco as a dad?? I don't think he's appreciated enough. He's a brilliant dad! THIS is his best redemption arc).
- "What did you say to our son, Harry?" GO OFF QUEEN (Albus is a confirmed mommy boy)
- RON WANT TO MARRY HERMIONE AGAIN. I don't quite ship them in the book/movie but they're just the sweetest in here 😩😩
- I just had the sudden realisation that Scorbus might be the only couple that I ship in hp that is so close to canon (and was canonised by some play if I heard correctly).
- that time where they were in godric hollow and Scorpius was surprised that Albus never knew the full story of his grandparents or visited the place just bc he was being a petty, moody uninterested teenager hit so hard (he is me and I am him). And the shame he felt was real too. I always regret those years in my life where I acted like that and I don't even have a daddy issue like Al did, what's my bloody excuse lmao (I blame fucking hormones) 😩😭
- okay so finished it!! When I was a kid I don't quite like the time travel thingy and find it very confusing but I think it's because it's a screenplay yk, and it was meant to be watched not read. But the novel version did help a lot (and I give the author my hundreds of gratitude, her writing is absolutely beautiful! And she captured the characters perfectly! If you're scared to read The Cursed Child, read her novel version in ao3!!!).
I'm surprised that I actually love the plot more than I thought I would. Yeah it can get a bit unrealistic at times but all in all it's very entertaining and Albus and Scorpius are very well written, very rounded and nuanced characters that carry the book. I'm glad their parents didn't overshadow their personality etc (like them being mini-copies of Harry and Draco). They're their own person and I love that about them!!
They're not Drarry or even Jegulus as I've seen people say, they're in their own league. There are no enemies or hatred or tension between them; Scorpius and Albus genuinely like each other so much from the first they laid their eyes on each other and I adore them for it.
I read a theory that Albus was sent in Slytherin because he subconsciously wanted to be in a house with this kind boy met on the train and it made me want to cry (they were made for each other). (Although I do think Albus have many Slytherin traits, Scorpius I was less sure he screamed Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw to me but admittedly he can be cunning to).
So yeah, I don't think it's that bad as everyone said (and my 11 y/o self). It's fun and I actually cried a lot at the end of it (I have to watch Jily die, do you have any idea what that did to me???) (I don't even ship them but i swear this book set me to default back to canon).
I really want to watch the play, would die for it but it's impossible and I can only dream.xoxo

The Evolution Of A Wolfstar Girlie
(with my fic recommendations)me aged 10-23: there will never be a book I like more than Harry Potter. I love books and read all the time but Harry Potter is above anything. Reread HP everytime I am feeling down.
me aged 24-30: I lost the ability to read for pleasure. Just read to my kids and A LOT for work.
me at 31: *after a random tiktok video* Sirius and Remus were TOGETHER together?! Never even crossed my mind!!!
But... I get it.
But like... JKR didn't write it. Fanfic is just amateurs writing, right? I have enough of reading as is, I have to read for my job (I'm a translator).
But... They promised it's a HP experience. And I do have an eReader... It costs nothing to try it.
But... What the hell is ao3? What is smut??? Fluff??? HEA? MCD??? Cannon?? AU? Excuse me, is this English?!
The following then happend over 2 months time:
📖 Reading All the Young Dudes
OK, this is really very much like HP. I am getting hooked. This is ACTUALLY what happend, right? Like this is amazingly written. How is this not a real book? (What IS a real book and how do I not know this being a book translator?!) Are Sirius and Remus getting together in this one?
Oh my!
Actually, I've not been this obsessed with a book in like 10+ years.
Reading all through the night (with three kids, mind you, so a very stupid idea)
🎶Love this music!!! Have always loved rock, Queen, Beatles, Bowie, led Zeppelin… You name it. But this makes it better!!!
Finishing ATYD: OMG! OMG! I AM OBSESSED. They need to be together forever. I need to re-read it.
A SEX SCENE in Harry Potter?! EXCUSE YOU! Like… Didn't know I needed that. Thank you.
Of course they had teenage sex at that school. Yes to a giant snake killing people with its sight and no to some friendly petting? Yeah, sure, JKR! Be for real! Never thought about it like that before. And of course they had parties. And smoked (weed) and did drugs. Like… It's a boarding school for heaven's sake! this is much more realistic. Finally know what smut is and I am here for it.
I want a cigarette SO BAD right now (haven't smoked for YEARS)
googling specifics of gay sex because I never thought about it (and I live in a very conservative country) (and like I had QUESTIONS, excuse you, like can you just do butt stuff without prep?!)
finding 📖 explicit one-shots from ATYD
📖 Reading ATYD sirius's POV:
This is ALSO good. So... fanfics on the internet can just... be amazing, right? How has this existed for years and I did not know about it?? Sirius is obsessed LOL. He fell first and he fell harder, the poor boy.
My husband is SO MUCH like Remus. (personality-wise). Guess I know my type, lol.
These fanfics are written better than majority of books I've read. I'm utterly amazed.
📖 Reading Out of the Blue and Bootleg Tapes:
OK, I needed some healing. Happy for Grant and all. But I need wolfstar more.
📖 We could be heroes (finding out what a "fix-it fic" is)
Yes! Wolfstar endgame! A happy ending! Yes!!
Intrusive thoughts: Is ATYD wolfstar like… toxic?
Are they ever happy?
Don't go there, brain!!
Trying to heal with 📖Manacled, then DMATMOOBIL.
Like Dramione. But wolfstar is far superior.
Also have to note that Draco is amazing in bed.
Not a sentence I've ever thought I utter or think. Ever.
Finding 📖 Cadence Of Part-time Poets
sceptical.
How can muggle AU be good? Don't I like all this because of the magic?
Reading it, re-reading it.
Buying an e-cigarette (cause I have to DEAL ffuck's sake and they smoke in like every second scene and ecigarrete is the least of all evil)
Obsessing.
Cannot get enough.
Best. Thing. Ever. Written.
Somehow more magic than magic U.
DOES REGULUS LIKE JAMES?
Seeing the possibilities of Jegulus (is everyone gay in the end? Excuse me, Am I GAY at this point ?)
THE MUSIC OMG THE MUSIC IS MUSICING!!! I am in love with the music! How are Marauders not a band in cannon?! Like that's obviously what they were always supposed to be! Lottie, Simon, Tonya, Tomny… They ARE cannon for me lol. They were there and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Cannot read more, afraid I will lose this Cadence feeling. Just re-reading the best scenes over and over. Stalking motswolo's tumblr. Consuming all there is about Cadence out there. Trying to talk to people about it but noone reads fanfics here!
Can we like start a gofund me for them to get therapy??? I want to see them diagnosed, aware of their traumas and forever together.
Also, why is Remadora a thing? Thank god it wasn't in Cadence (yet) but sometimes i remember it exists and like… vomit internally. Gosh, I rly hate JKR. She just did it to discourage Wolfstar.
getting to read 📖 Black Mass Over Highway 90:
Very sceptical at first.
It's American… and Marauders are essentially English. Remus somewhere in Texas… of all places? Afraid this won't be my cup of tea... Cowboy Remus?! wtf
OMG.
OMG.
This scene basically porn… right? Why do I LOVE THIS?!
Remus is DADDY! Officer Moons!!! He can get it. Like omg. Cowboy Lupin FTW!!
THIS IS the SMUT, RIGHT?! Like do I even want to watch porn at this point? How am I - a cis female in a hetero relationship of 14 years with 3 kids - finding this SO HOT?!
📖 Reading Blends
Also very sceptical.
But... it's so sweet! Is this fluff? Am I discovering fluffy fics? Now, this is comfort reading! Coffe-shop AU? Like, this is where I want to die, my friends! This is so sweet, so incredibly sweet, and I DO NOT miss Voldy and his stupid war one bit, like to hell with him, he can order an Americano and Remus will decaf him at this point!
I am in LOVE!
📖 Reading Names (Blends sequel) because can you do anything else at this point?
Now this is... a whole other thing. It is fluffy, yes. But it goes deeper. And... wider somehow?
It's the first WIP I give a chance.
Cluster headaches are an AMAZING parallel to lycantrophy.
HOW exactly are people this talented just out there publishing fanfics?!
And this "slice of life" thing IS doing it for me. Like really.
📖 Reading Crimson Rivers
Is there anything else besides angst in this?
Wait, James likes... Regulus?!
discovering Jegulus -
wow. I am utterly amazed... cannot put this down at any point of the day. Reading while breastfeeding, reading all through the night. Reading all through the day. Learning how to read and braid my hair at the same time.
I keep thinking - why DO I love gay man/boys stories? How did it come to this? How is this FREE? How do I GIVE BACK to these AMAZING authors that are just doing incredible things for me? Like this is everything I've ever wanted from a book... and they're not even getting paid for this?!
📖 Reading a bunch of short fics inbetween (honorable mentions: Like Real People Do, That's the Art of Getting by, Led by Light of a Star Sweetly Gleaming, Pages of You - discovering Drarry, thinking Drarry is less angst because there's less homophobia in the 90s,
📖 Reading Only the Brave
OK, it's Jegulus, let's give it a chance...
OMG
OMG
OMG
I feel like ever since getting into this fandom, I'm just falling and falling and falling. Falling... In love.
This is so good, you guys. I love JEGULUS!
But as long as WOLFSTAR are together, I can deal (took them half a fic to get together, so please don't do anything stupid!)
I. CANNOT. STOP. READING. WOLFSTAR.
In every universe.
Wolfstar & fanfic taught me not to have any prejudice. And I also discovered that I was quite prejudiced without being aware of it!
I can read anything with those two... just don't break my heart and just let them be together.
Wolfstar made me read again and actually enjoy it. It's been several thousands of pages in a couple of months and I don't regret the lack of sleep…
They are soulmates. In every universe. I don't know what this fetish is called but I need them to be together, see them together, read them together. Love them both. Just need them to be happy.
I am completely amazed at the sheer power the internet has, that an online community has. This is my new obsession and I am utterly devoted to it. It taught me and gave me SO MUCH. I will forever be learning how to give anything back.
Thank you.

Hi!! Maybe you've answered this before but I did a quick look through your blog and didn't see it so I hope you don't mind me asking - on your post about Jewish fantasy books you said you have a lot of problems with a deadly education; can you talk more about those problems? I'm very curious to hear your thoughts, especially since I'm assuming from the context of the post that they're Jewish problems. But even if they're not im still curious! I just finished a reread of the schoolmance series so it's on my mind
I was wrong!
I initially made the post as people were shouting their recommendations at me -- and I was constantly getting stuck at chapter three of A DEADLY EDUCATION. I loved El but the narration wasn't grabbing me compared to Novik's previous novels.
So during a light winter storm, I forced myself to sit down with my library copies and read them all. Reading it as a deconstruction of HP through a fandom lenses (as opposed to thinking it would stylistically be similar to UPROOTED and SPINNING SILVER), changed my opinion. THE SCHOLOMANCE books are very much a conversation about capitalism and complacency. (Whereas, initially, I was expecting whimsy.)
I wouldn't exactly recommend the trilogy as Jewish fantasy novels, but I do recommend them as a deconstruction of the genre!

what made you get into writing marauders fics? did you read/write harry potter fics before? just curious about your journey as a writer lol
it was literally just atyd 🤧 i had never read a single marauders/hp fic before atyd then read it w some friends during early covid…then still did not read any other fics but like a year later reread atyd bc my twin was reading it & decided to write a sirius pov for funsies. wasn’t til i actually finished writing & posting atydsp that i ventured out & started reading other fics ! i had read the og books as a kid so there was some nostalgia factor etc but i really only ~joined the fandom~ a few years ago

Was rereading your FFXVI article the other day and I got curious to know why you don’t like Bravely Default and Octopath. I agree that Octopath is a tedious dumpster fire, but I quite liked the Bravely series apart from That One Bit of Default (and also the entirety of BD2, which plays a lot more like Octopath and is therefore dogshit). I’d be interested to hear your thoughts in more detail, if you’re willing to share?
I will definitely say that I liked what I played of Bravely Default 1 (the only one of the Bravely games I've touched) better than Octopath 1. It's not the worst. I can see how people who are more patient with it can get a lot out of it. I think most of my problems with it mainly come down to pacing. The story takes a long time to go anywhere, and the writing along the way didn't grab me. (Ringabel's constant womanizing certainly didn't help.) You unlock additional jobs slowly. It felt like I had to stop and grind a lot, either to level my jobs or just to have enough gold to buy shit. Compared to the whirlwind pace of the classic FFs it was riffing on, it felt like I was making very little progress during the time I played
But the thing that really bothered me is that, even in the early game, bosses are massive damage sponges with tons of HP that take forever to fight. My casters would run out of MP halfway through the fight, and because of how rare and expensive ethers were I'd have no way to restore their MP, so I'd just limp along to the end of the fight without magic. It was miserable. Most old school JRPGs are also pretty strict about MP recovery items, sure, but in those games boss fights tend to be MUCH shorter until later in the game, and they're generally designed so that going in with a full HP/MP party already puts you at an advantage. Those games also have items like tents so that you can restore your party at save points, whereas Bravely seemingly just expects you to turn off encounters and walk all the way back to the nearest inn. These are VERY strange design decisions in a game that's trying so hard to be accessible and low-friction, to the point that you can just turn off random encounters whenever you want. This balancing feels like the worst of both worlds when it comes to classic and modern JRPG design
I can pinpoint the exact moment in the story that was my last straw, though, about six hours into the game. I took a photo of it. It was this:
Tumblr media
In a better story, I could roll my eyes at this line and move on. But I was already having a generally unpleasant time, and the story felt like it had barely gone anywhere in six whole hours. (By that point in FF6 you could be nearing the opera!! In Chrono Trigger you'd probably be in Magus' friggin' castle!!!!!) So I decided it was time to cut my losses
I took this as an opportunity to just go and play FF5, rather than a modern game that's imitating it. I still need to actually beat FF5 someday (I am terrible about finishing long games because ADHD etc. etc.), but god, I loved what I played of it, and it really just highlighted how much better it is than Bravely Default. WAY better story pacing, way better bosses, you unlock the jobs way quicker, the party is way more likeable. It was still a game where I found myself grinding, but in FF5 it felt like I was actively making the choice to invest time in my character builds because I was having fun with those systems, rather than feeling forced to grind for gold or whatever
TL;DR the moral of this story is that everyone should play FF5

Somewhat related to my last reblog, but I’m realizing there are some embarrassingly big parts of HP (particularly OotP, HBP, and DH) that I missed/didn’t pick up on because I skipped over a lot of parts when I first read them. I’ve always had ADHD (apparently, though I didn’t know), and the way that JKR writes is oddly conducive to skipping parts of paragraphs, particularly ones with important exposition. My reading comprehension was so poor because I was reading those books starting at midnight when I bought them at the releases, and I just cruised on through, eager to see what happened, skimming whole pages and finishing as quickly as I could.
For example, I really didn’t understand the snake scene in OotP. My 11-year-old brain was just like, “He is snake? How is he snake?” But I just blasted through that whole section (probably because I was trying to get to the Sirius bits lol). I also rarely reread these books, so I think there’s a ton that I never really realized/understood.
I don’t have a point to this post only that holy shit, despite being a voracious reader in my childhood, my comprehension skills were horrible.

Ten Questions for Writers
Thanks for the tags @shrekgogurt, @artsyunderstudy, @youarenevertooold, & @roomwithanopenfire I’m enjoying all this navel-gazing a whole bunch actually & I’ve done this before but it’s been awhile… sooo
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 169 (niiiice)
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? ~950k (yikes) although some of that is Birthday Man and collabs with people from WIP fest. Don’t ask me to do the math tho; that’s mean.
3. What fandoms do you write for? I’ve written for HP, Check Please, and RWRB although right now I’m mostly a CO writer with a toe dipping into 9-1-1. I have one Captain America fic posted and some WIPs I don’t know if I’ll finish. Nobody look at that AFTG fic; it’s pure crack.
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Whoo boy do I have thoughts here. I want to be the kind of writer who replies to comments and I harbor so much guilt that I’m not; I know I miss out on opportunities to connect with readers, and I genuinely appreciate comments so much; I hoard them in my inbox like a greedy lil affirmation dragon. I write to engage and connect. So, like, I know I should but at the same time I hate forcing interactions. I like them to spawn organically. I keep my circle small because I get really emotionally overwhelmed and then I feel guilty when I can’t give people what they deserve. And I’ve also never been comfortable with compliments or gratitude, I don’t trust them. So here’s a bulk of emotional trauma no one asked for to say: I don’t reply to comments as often as I feel I should and I’m trying to release the guilt I feel about this while also recognizing that not commenting probably has a direct negative affect on my ability to meet my goal of connecting through writing and at the same time my mental health probably couldn’t withstand the pressure I would need to place on it to get to where I’m replying to comments regularly. Hi I’m a mess who’s trying to love herself and often falls short of that goal; aren’t we all?
5. Have you ever had a fic stolen? No.
6. Have you ever co-written a fic before? So many actually! I didn’t think I’d ever get to a place where I trust someone else to the level this would take but I’ve been really lucky to work with some amazing writers even if not all of those works went anywhere. I actually don’t even think I could realistically tag all the people I’ve collabed with bc I’m afraid I’ll miss someone and isn’t that amazing? Personal growth; we love to see her.
7. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Oh man. I want to just be lame and say it’s me and Mr. Face 🤣 I shipped us when no one else did. Um! Snowbaz is always going to have a special place in my heart, but I’m really leaning into Buddie right now because of age and wanting to explore people in their 30’s still figuring out their lives while battling PTSD and late-in-life sexuality realizations. For, um. Reasons.
8. What are your writing strengths? I do like my dialogue a lot; dialogue is often where I start my scenes and I develop from there. I think I’ve done a good job of honing my ability to vary action/dialogue/internality a lot. I also think I keep people engaged or maybe I just keep myself engaged which is good enough for me. Sometimes I’m funny although sadly not as much recently.
9. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with remembering to add in physical descriptors. (Like oh shit have I ever mentioned this character has eyes?) Logistics are a frequent source of pain. (Wait, where were their hands?) I think my plots are kind of basic and boring; I don’t come up with really vivid and detailed concepts. I use the wrong words for things. I really hate detailing out backstory. I have to reread my fics a million times to maintain character consistency. Etc.
10. First fandom you wrote for? Hey Arnold. I wish I could find those fics; I bet they suck.
Tagging 10 peeps @sillyunicorn @mostlymaudlin @martsonmars @bookish-bogwitch @cutestkilla @ivelovedhimthroughworse @thewholelemon @palimpsessed @aristocratic-otter & @you-remind-me-of-the-babe

Hi there!! Actively looking for HP mutuals!
I'm 25, 🏳️‍⚧️ they/he atm! Poly/Partnered! Not the most social of people but doing my best! I'm a bit more functional as snail mail style communication at this point in my life 🤣 I've been on this site since like 2013/14 🤣
I've read the main series books, quite a few years ago but plan to reread soon! I haven't read any additional books in relation to the WW!
Very into the movies atm since they're the most time accessible 🤣🤣 In the middle of a rewatch with my nest partner! We're about to finish HBP!
I'm very interested in getting into the marauders but I'm unsure where to start! I've read a couple fanfics!
I really, really love the universe as a whole, it keeps me sane as much as I wish it didn't 🤣
I am a fan of shipping, I believe I'm called a multishipper? I'm not up to par with some new lingo 🤣 I used to be super chronically online in a social way but I've been just chilling and reading fanfic for a few years ✨️ My top is dramione (primarily fandom and movie personalities, I started re-reading the books 🤣), I don't mind if we have similar or different ships 😋 Fan of a number of characters, Draco, Fred and George, Hermione, Luna, Sirius, Remus, many many more.
I have a Hexrpg account, though I'm not super active! I recently was gifted Hogwarts Legacy! I'm about 5 hours into my first playthrough! I haven't gotten super far into the plot lol.
I'm thinking about writing fanfiction, but I haven't written anything in many years 🤣 But we'll see what happens!
I've probably forgotten a bunch, but I figured I'd throw my name in 😋 Dms and asks should be open, if you interact with this I'll check out your blog!! Please don't interact if: minor, general asshole, terf/whatever the fuck/n@zi/phobic/actually a piece of shit, ect

You mentioned that some of the most well-written fics you've come across are tomarrymort so do you have any recs?? Bc I love and agree with your interpretation of Harry but I haven't found a lot of people who write him that way
Okay, I've gotten a lot of fic recs asks, so I'll explain again that I don't really have a fic rec list and why.
I used to read a lot of HP fics like 3-4 years ago, but not anything recent, so I don't feel comfortable recommending a story I don't really remember anything about. Now, there are two reasons I kinda stopped reading HP fics:
1. The more I wrote, the more incapable I became of reading like a reader. Instead, I often found myself reading like an editor and going: "Oh, I'd rephrase this sentence to remove 3 words," which sucks when reading fic.
I sometimes manage to turn it off, but it kinda sucks the fun out when I don't switch it off properly. This is 100% a me problem and why I just chose not to engage with fics often times.
2. I decided to reread the books 3-ish years ago after I haven't looked at an HP book for about a decade. After my reread I found none of these fics I loved fit the image I had in my head for the characters and/or the wizarding world. The stories were still well crafted, but I couldn't enjoy reading them without seeing the discrepancies from canon. Not even talking about my own headcanons here, just, canon proper.
All this caused a situation where I don't really want to read any of the fics I loved because none of them really portray the story/world/characters I want to read. Again, 100% a me problem, so I just stopped reading. I stopped searching for HP fics entirely.
But I still wanted to read HP fics. And a lot of them. So what did I do?
I wrote them for myself. I have so many unfinished HP fic wips in my docs. I'm talking about 70 wips here ranging from 6K to 70K words. There are so many and most of them aren't going to ever be finished (A matter of Chance will be finished because I have a plan and I promised). Some of the older ones don't portray the characters and the world the way I would now because my writing (and view on the wizarding world) has changed throughout the last few years of analyzing the books the way I do now.
This is why I can't really recommend something I read 3 years ago, because 3 years ago my thoughts about the characters and world-building were different and I can see it in my own works too.
So, sorry, I just don't feel comfortable reccing fic since I haven't read any recently enough.

Text & QR codes printed with colour laser printer (duplex, flip long edge), images printed with inkjet printer (HP Envy 5055; one sheet at a time, single sided, place facedown in tray)
BINDING: quarto (quarter-letter) size, sewn board binding with french link stitch and breakaway spine.
.
Absolutely LOVED this story! I've reread this one a number of times, and keep going back for more. Alphera's writing is so good! Ye Xiu is the series protagonist so things usually follow him, which makes it refreshing to see a story through Han Wenqing's eyes. And the author does it SO WELL! AHHH!
It's been a while since my first read-through, but I'm pretty sure this was the first TKA fic that I actually downloaded and started typesetting. Absolutely chuffed to have it finished! (Love me some growth-- the typeset looks a LOT better than my earlier attempts!)
RAMBLES
Another sewn board binding and breakaway spine! Since this isn't my first go at it, the construction of the book was considerably faster and smoother than my last one. It's just as well, because I ran into a speed bump that stretched out how long it took to typeset and print.
The culprit: (very pretty) illustrations. My laser's colour printing capabilities are shot to hell, so I used my inkjet for the artwork. This involved creating 3 copies of my typeset: 1) the completed typeset; 2) just the text, images hidden; 3) just the images, text hidden/white. Then I ran them through the imposer and printed the text version. The real issue was figuring out how to feed the sheets through my inkjet printer to print the images where I want them. Had to go one page at a time, single-sided. (Just need to place sheet facedown in the tray. So flip along vertical axis.) It took a while, but I got there in the end. And the results were SO worth it! 😊
For the scene breaks I left them as written. I had tried inserting images of the Glory Logo and account card, or using crossed swords emojis ⚔️, but nothing I tried worked as well as what the author did. (It's really neat! Different characters were used to indicate the direction of the timeskip: >>>> for a jump forward in time; <<<< for a flash into the past; and ==== for regular scene breaks, a 'next' rather than 'before' or 'later/after'.)
The cover and endpapers were based off of Shirou's fantastic cover illustration of HQW and YX walking hand-in-hand down a beach at sunset. The art itself is phenomenal so I had it stand alone as a frontispiece and didn't do anything fancy with the title page. For the covers, I looked through my decorative paper stash for something red or black to represent HWQ or Team Tyranny. What I found was paper with pinks, oranges, and purples similar to that illustration -- and that was that. I liked how the colours matched the art, and the gold splashed across it. (Gold for victory, gold for wedding rings and a happy golden future together.)
(Sidenote: I love how the beginning of the end of HWQ's career as an e-sports player "starts with a tingle in his ring finger", leading him and YX to taking the next steps in their relationship and eventually getting married 💍🖐)
I went with a red bookcloth for the spine because it's a common team colour for Tyranny, Excellent Era, and Happy. It also represents good fortune, courage, passion, and love -- things that come to mind when I think about YX, HWQ, and HanYe. The particular shade of red I used is Madeira. It's darker than Ruby Red and leans a little cooler, which suits the decorative paper more.
Tumblr media
The endpapers use two background images (overlayed, adjusted, using multiple blending modes) and some images of HWQ and YX from The King's Avatar Wikia.
The background images are from Rawpixel -- I was just minding my own business looking for images of clouds and maybe some mountains to represent overcoming challenges/glory/looking up to the sky, when I found some clouds with the same sunset colours of Shirou's art. Figured it was too perfect, and if I'm going to lean into that design-wise, I might as well go whole hog and full-ass it. Then I found a starry night sky to add some darker blues and stars to it to match. After that it was a matter of overlapping them and positioning them to fit. I also grabbed some images of HWQ and YX from the King's Avatar Wikia and added them to it because HanYe. (After removing the backgrounds).

fanfic writer interview
tagged by: @carry-the-sky 🩵⋆˙⟡
what fandoms do you write in?
currently revisiting my daryl/beth (twd) fixation, as well as getting some of my eddie/chrissy (st) squared away.
i started way back when with lily/james (hp), dabbled with some other ships therein, then moved on to jon/sansa and theon/sansa (got). i've also played with katniss/haymitch (thg) and alina/the darkling (sab), and some crossover crackships.
so, y'know. it's really become a "whatever i feel like" thing, which is probably what fanfic should be, anyway.
how many words have you published in 2024?
my darling i haven't the faintest idea <3
what is your greatest achievement this year?
finally wrapping my head around the fact that this is all for fun, removing myself from the fandom arena of it all, and just writing what i want to write and leaving it there. this foundation has always been there, but i've definitely lost sight of it so many times over the years; now, though, i've settled into it.
what are your top three fics you've written this year?
what comes next, hey, bust a move : the revamped and in-progress bethyl/boondock saints-inspired au
wish he would get over you : the eddissy/jason pov that i at last updated, and god willing (or not willing, even, this isn't any of his business) i will finish it—
that was it for this year! i've been focusing more and more on original stuff, but i think having a couple fanfic side-projects now will do me some good. i'm finding the balance.
what was your biggest pit of despair moment?
i don't think anything? not in relation to fanfic, at least, if only because i wasn't doing much of it during this rotation 'round the sun. but in general i think any creative pursuit comes with its highs and lows, and learning how to ride those waves is part of getting better at your art.
what have you learned?
how to ride those aforementioned waves, and letting them be fun.
did you beta any fics? any faves you want to shout out?
not this year! my day job is, for all intents and purposes, beta-ing. if someone asks, though, i'm usually up for it!
what three fics have you read this year that you love?
mostly i've been rereading old loves, BUT i did at last stumble across algorithm love song by @littlelindentree. 10/10 instant classic comfort fic.
what ideas are percolating for next year?
nothing fresh and hip, i'm afraid! with new and good things happening with my original stuff, fanfic is officially my little hobby de-stressor (and about goddamn time, too). once i wrap up some eddissy, i'll focus on the bethyl bds fic and whatever one-shots hit.
there are other wips i'd like to finish, but the truth is they're not a priority right now; i'll work on them if/when the mood strikes. some of them might need a full redo if i pick them up again, but we'll cross that bridge… at some point, probably.
who do you want to thank?
@littlelindentree for, however inadvertently, somehow jedi mind-tricking me into working on bethyl again, which has been really fun and it's reminded me of how much this dynamic inspires me.
@sluttyhenley for letting me in her inbox so we can both Yell and also academically examine the finer points of this ship.
@carry-the-sky for a really lovely conversation a few weeks ago about our Feelings About Writing that was all things helpful and validating
@hangon-silvergirl bc rereading the buzz in particular has helped me out of a few of the worse depressive spots this year <3
tagging: literally anyone who feels like it. tag me back so i can see! x

13 books
What’s up readers?! How about a little show and tell? Answer these 13 questions, tag 13 lucky readers and if you’re feeling extra bookish add a shelfie! Let’s Go!
Tagged by @cuubism Thank you!! 💖 Heads up: if you're tagged, you don't need to read it alllll even if you do want to participate 😌
1) The Last book I read:
I'm pretty sure it was Tress of the Emerald Sea, what a delight!
2) A book I recommend:
.... The Way of Kings... (The Stormlight Archive)
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
The second book of The Stormlight Archive, Words of Radiance had me by my throat like nothing else. wow. 👏🏻
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Listen. I'll list something other than The Stormlight Archive just because this is getting embarrassing. The books I used to regularly reread were: HP, Eragon and Assassin's Apprentice. (full series rereads, crossing the 10 each) 😌
5) A book on my TBR:
I have a hefty amount of books I bought and never read. Ranging from classics to cheap fantasy-- but alas, my brain is fixated on the other author who doesn't disappoint me and so I just stick to his books XD
Some of the books sitting on my ineffective 'shame you into reading' shelf are: Captive Prince, the rest of the Wolfsong series, the.... shadowhunters books... the new trilogy about Fitz which I have in hardcovers yet never read. And some... others...
6) A book I’ve put down:
One of the reasons I am avoidant of taking on new books at all is because I have a very hard time putting down books I started. I'll suffer through entire series just for the few grains of gratification in the end. Or to... spitefullfy and confidently say it sucked balls.
However... three series managed to break me.
First being GoT, I just didn't manage to get through, not even 10 chapters. A true oddedity for me, but I just couldn't.
Second being The Witcher. I managed to power through like 4-5 books? And then I just couldn't do this to myself anymore. It was so, so, so not my vibe. (even while the pc game is about my most favorite game ever.) 🤷🏻‍♀️
And lastly, although I think I did finish the entire series before deciding that if ever a new book came out, I'll never read it, was the-- god what's the name of it... the First Law Trilogy – The Blade Itself etc from joe abercrombie. What a bleak series! Oh my god!
7) A book on my wish list:
My honest wishlist is just to keep on reading Brando Sando in my slow and enjoying-it phase... Although I admit that there's a large amount of those new spicy fantasy books apparently being released that shorts recommend and older folk rant about, so I naturally do want to check it out to see what's up with that but.... in truth... I just want to keep on enjoying Brando Sando XD
8) A favorite book from childhood:
I genuinely really loved Eragon. Oh and Artemis Fowl was all fun. I also really loved Tunnel in the Sky, like really.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
ngl it'll be an unapologetic The Way of Kings with big and passionate begging session of 'please give it a try' like for real.
In case any one of you is actually interested--- (you don't have to read this part) -inhales deeply-
The Way of Kings is a truly misleading book, that might leave you with the impression that the book is all about wars and kings but that is the furthest from the truth a description and a cover and a name can go.
It has fantasy, it has deep and rich world building, elaborate magic system that is deeply embedded into the story, culture and literal every single stone of the world. There's politics, culture, introspection, deep and varied characters, each reading like the main character of the story, having unique and vibrant personality and motivations.
It is not just a book, it is a work of true and deep love for the genre and writing in general. Beautifully done, enriching and enticing.
And what's most important for people who read too many books?
Hard to predict. It managed to pull the rug from underneath my feet in the most surprising and pleasing ways. Brandon writes in a way that is not 'shock just to shock' nor 'drama just for drama'. Every single scene is true, and forward. You always have everything right in front of you, the key is that you do not know how to put it all together just yet.
That can finally give that refreshing 'I don't know where it's heading but I'm enjoying the experience" I feel I had lost over the years, being able to recognize patterns too easily and predict writing intentions.
God, what a book! It does however have a rough learning curve, being such a massive world, it takes time to ease you in. Say about at least 5 chapters in at the minimum. On a personal note, I recommend the audiobooks read by kate reading and michael kramer, literally the best experience I've ever had, listening to those two bring to life every character and accent and scene, wow!
10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own:
Come to think of it, I don't actually own any. Ha.
11) A nonfiction book you own:
I don't haha! Looking back, it's a lie, I have a few phycology books gathering dust in various hiding spots.
12) What are you currently reading:
........The Way of Kings....
13) What are you planning on reading next?
.....Words of Radiance.... haha. 😋
Y'all don't need to read all them answers in case you just want to answer it for yourself, or you can skip, too 😊😊😊
@mayhemspreadingguy, @pollyp, @nonbinary-nicolo, @msmongoose, @hardly-an-escape,

Hi! Long time follower, big time fan. The fall weather has me rewatching HP and remembering how in love with the characters I am. Ofc I had to reread through your master list, and I rediscovered Sunburns and Dragons. It's SUCH an amazing story. I'm just wondering are you still working on it? Or is it in hiatus?
The fall weather always makes me want to reread HP haha! It’s such a perfect fall/winter series.
I am still working on it, don’t worry! I’m trying to overcome a writer’s block with the next couple of chapters since they take place at Hogwarts and involve some research on my part. Also trying to find my flow again! But I’m hoping to finish the series by this winter!! Thank you so much for checking in!!

Toujours-Bellamort here (it’s a second account, won’t let me ask from it). Just wanted to say I finished KMCB and it’s possibly one of the best Bellamort fanfics I’ve read. Their relationship is brilliant, how you depicted their ups and downs. I’ll admit I’d have liked to have seen a lot more of your Rodolphus because I love him very much, but aside from that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve bookmarked it for rereads, that’s how much I appreciate your work. Thank you for all the work and love you put into it!
Thank you so much for this message I can't tell you how happy it makes me !!!!! One of the best you've read makes me smile so hard :') I'm so glad you loved my Rodolphus - I'm still writing in this universe so I'll try to include more of him. Honestly when it was initially written but not edited neither of the Lestrange brothers really had personalities and they were made into real characters only in the editing process (which was like half of the time I took creating this lol). I think also that Rodolphus is scared of Voldemort for the majority of the first war bc of when he threatened to torture him to death and then obv he's in Azkaban for much of the HP era. This feedback is really valuable bc this is something I also thought, so I'm going to really try to develop him more. Thank you so much again for reading it and taking the time to send me this it's so meaningful and precious to me <3
