I like the ambiguity tbh, like in steeplechase and ethersea we don't have Canon Queer TM characters but we also don't have any Straight characters, like there are no Romance tm plots happening. The way Justin has talked about romance for his characters in the past really shows that he doesn't care to make something Official, he lays the groundwork and lets us figure it out. And that's why amber and Kodira are so real to me, because it's an unspoken thing - like the characters themselves don't talk about it cause they just wouldn't so for us as the audience to know something they wouldn't reveal (amber is very secretive with her personal shit) to other characters makes a lot of sense to me. It feels kind of like classic queer stories, where it's never specifically stated that they're in love or whatever but instead told through the story- especially since those tend to be more complicated stories, and in a world like ethersea, that makes an incredible amount of sense to me. And same with Devo, he wouldn't reveal that information himself and I think the subtext allows us to fit that idea in really well. While it would be so cool if these things were Canonℱ I don't think they need to be confirmed by the creators to have merit. same thing with the Steeplechase PCs and autism/queerness. They don't have to say it cause we can arrive at those conclusions ourselves and derive our own connections. like I remember in grad, griffin had known Fitz was ace but he didn't outright state it in the setup or anything until a question was asked in a ttazz and that confirmation was so exciting to me, and helped me to read his interactions with rainier better- but in ethersea I think they build those interactions in a more specific way to make those connections clear. Or maybe me and everyone else who listened to it is just having amber and Kodira brainrot. But I know there's something there
A plea for more queer TAZ characters
Since it's pride month i've decide to post my plea for more queer TAZ characters. I think about this around once every week, and i'm pretty sure my friends are tired of me talking about this so I will talk about it on here instead. I always loved the queer characters in TAZ (Lup is an icon) but there seems to be a reasonable decline in queer PCs and NPCs lately. Of course Balance had a ton, so did Amnesty, i'm not aware of any queer PCs or NPCs in Graduation aside from Fiztroy, and Ethersea is a bit up in the air. In my opinion there was definitely some best friends-to-lovers energy coming from Amber and Okasana/Koderia but nothing was said by the Justin or Griffin so it's probably my ships getting in the way of things. I know a lot of people headcannoned Devo as trans in Ethersea which is definitely a possibility but there was still no conformation of this. I think a lot of The Adventure Zone's fanbase would appreciate some more queer characters. As a queer person myself I always enjoyed the representation in The Adventure Zone and hope that Steeplechase has some canon queer characters not just head canons.

Thoughts on shadamy? Or how you see the potential behind their dynamic? đŸ„ș👉👈
gosh i havent thought that much about shadamy in awhile!! i was REALLLLY into it tho, just as much as i was into sonamy, like i honestly couldnt decide which i liked more.
(under read more cause once again i am Just Talk Talk Talk)
obviously now sonshadamy is the way
but ok well, i think i ship them more platonically firstofall (tho im not against romantically, we just haven't seen them together that many times? i would LOOOVE more interaction with them) and she'd be really good for helping him open up more about his thoughts and feelings, encourage him to be kind and thoughtful. people like to say that Sonic is a lot like Maria, and maybe they are similar!- Maria never got the chance to be adventurous or active though, and in SA2, Amy clearly reminded Shadow of Maria just as he was about to watch Earth be destroyed. She reminded and showed Shadow the actual meaning in Maria's words, what she wanted for Shadow and thats how he was able to save the world.
Amy's a really 'get into her feelings' kind of person and i can see her and Shadow having a few arguements and disagreements and lack of communication and understanding between them. It would def be really rocky at first (while Sonic on the other hand, just *understands* Shadow and leaves him be if needed, or confronts him directly and straight to the point). It would take a long time for Amy to really understand Shadow who's a closed door, and Amy's a open book and maybe that scares Shadow. He doesnt understand someone like her, who is so selfless and kind and lends a helping hand to anyone in need, and maybe he hates being on the other hand of that dynamic- he sees it as being weak, and Amy could teach him that theres bravery in kindness.
On a happier note tho, some activities i can see them enjoying together. Clearly Amy cant keep up with him in combat or speed, but she has a good endurance, and i can see her taking him out shopping or to local game arcades, or maybe help him with gardening. he grumbles and complains at the thought of being around people and doesnt like the center of attention but i think he'd think the experience is worth it
In battle, he'd be pretty annoyingly worried about Amy, she's not as strong or skilled as him and Sonic, or as elusive and cunning as Rouge- and you know, he wouldnt wanna lose someone close to him a second time, so he'd prob jump in front of Amy all the time and Amy would get soooo pissed off at him and theyd just get into a yelling match in the middle of the battlefield and everyone else is just face palming and its sooo awkward for everyone.
Finally, sonic who's known amy like his whole life, assures Shadow that shes more than capable of taking care of herself. Yes she was the damsel in distress in the past, but she's gotten stronger, not only for her friends but for herself and he's seen the improvement. it takes a lot of convincing to calm Shadow and so maybe he tries to work together more as a team with her. He's not used to that, so he'll still mess up and still try to get the most enemies defeated, but thats because he wants all the glory. it's still kinda annoying to Amy but he's trying i suppose!
Or maybe I'm giving Shadow too much credit, maybe he leaves Amy by herself TOO much, leaves her to fend for himself, refuses to work as a coordinated team. He's always worked alone, and when he doesn't its with Rouge, and its more like theyre fighting alone but together- if that makes sense. This irritates Amy cause 'arent we friends? friends look out for each other' and he'd be like, ive always been able to look out for myself' and she'll say 'yes but not all of us are Ultimate Lifeforms like you. What's all your power and strength for if not used to protect those who need you?' and once again she reminds him of Maria's promise. She's really good at humbling him and gently or harshly putting him back in his place depending on whats going on.
Amy of course finds herself stumped from time to time and goes to Rouge a lot for advice, to which Rouge is happy to help but says sometimes its best to leave things alone as she's learned to do when it comes to Shadow. Rouge is kinda relived too, now that Amy's trying to take over as some sort of caretaker for Shadow. Takes some of the stress out of the older girl's hair. Amy can't leave things alone though and just pushes and pushes Shadow until he snaps at her and lets her have it. It sucks but at least he's communicating. Again, Amys not one to back down and tells him that what he does hurts her and his friends. Shadow grumbles that he doesnt care but he doooes when it comes to Rouge and Amy, and eventually learns that to have the girls stop pestering him is to just *tell them* what hes thinking or feeling. He learns its just easier to do that than have them bothering him for days and days.
this is a lot of "amy makes shadow a better guy" so let me think of how Shadow helps Amy for once, okay so obvs i think he'd be up to sparring with her on a lower level to help her advance her skills. She becomes a much stronger fighter. Since she doesnt have the speed he or Sonic does, he teacher her to put all she has into her Piko Hammer, helps her go through rigorous training to better wield the weapon in a more convenient manner rather than just swinging her hammer around and wasting energy when it doesnt hit. He'll even rope Omega in who's more than happy to shoot a moving target. Amy will have to skillfully weave and dodge through it all, or use her hammer to block or deflect the projectiles.
I guess he'd tried to teach her to be more careful of the people she trusted, not to trust so easily and openly. But I think she'd be pretty adamant about it, after all, she trusted him pretty much as soon as she met Shadow, and when she met Omega (E 123 Gamma? sorry cant remember if theyre the same character), along with a bunch of other baddies. She's not afraid of getting hurt or being wrong or trying to be the try hard good guy, she cares more about giving second chances to those who want it. Shadow and Amy agree to disagree but its brought up when its relevant.
hopefully this is good enough?? idk the shadamy fanfics i read back in the day, Shadow was either a really emo guy in highschool or some guy in a gang or mafia, and along came amy this really preppy girl who'd bring him out of his shell and into the sunshine, until one day her life was in danger and he'd have to save her, and sonic was either the villian or some asshole jock kid who get jealous now that amy wasnt always on him, or it was shadow's dad LOL that was THE formula for shadamy fics back then.

Just starting the first chapter...hmm, what is the establishment hiding, that they're so against the idea of making new maps?
And I'm intrigued by the idea of a society that's frankly & cheerfully accepting of trans people, but also, doesn't know that lesbians exist? Or has a fixation on a super-narrow PIV-specific idea of virginity. Or both? If the issue was "this person can't be allowed to get pregnant before the arranged marriage or it would be A Scandal," that would be a logical reason to divide up which sexy things are "safe" vs. which aren't, but it isn't framed that way...
Okay, end-of-the-chapter blurb says that is what it's about. It's just odd that the dialogue was coy about "the issue is pregnancy" while being so blunt about other things. (I was just reading another comic with a trans princess character, and wow, what an awkward plot twist that could lead to. "So, the good news is, there wasn't an accidental pregnancy in the direction you were afraid of, but...")
"I made a fantasy trope in this comic work the way I wish it worked in a certain other canon" is such a great motivator.
Geez, this kid's only been adventuring for 5 minutes before someone gets murdered in front of him. Poor guy.
...on the bright side, oh good, the princess is aware that lesbians exist.
Loving this axolotl dragon art. http://cryptsandcantrips.kytri.net/comic/chapter-3-extras-17/
And the orca dragon that follows.
Have now read through the Dramatic Twist. Not gonna go into details for the sake of other first-time readers, but it's more complicated than these plots usually seem to get in fantasy settings, and I'm into it.
warriorneedsfood
I like the comic. The relationships are fun to watch develop. I found the character introductions a little awkward with the announcement of their various types of sexuality. But after establishing them, I found their personalities interesting and was looking forward to reading more.
RebelVampire
What I liked about the beginning of the comic is kind of just how quickly it starts world-building with stuff like the issue of discrimination in the market or just the general name dropping of stuff. All of it felt pretty natural, and as I consider world-building vitally important for fantasy, I really liked the comic didn't hide its punches. My favorite moment was actually when the stranger on the road said "please come help my wagon" and then it devolved into them being attacked. This is like one of the most stereotypical fantasy things to happen, but that's kind of why I liked it. It added familiar comfort food with all the new stuff, and I liked just having something like that 100% met my expectations for what was about to happen. My favorite character right now is definitely Taneli. I love just how sweet and accepting she is. But I also kind of like she's just really...not entirely capable because she's lived the sheltered palace life and not gotten out much. Usually that's something I'd find annoying, but something about Taneli just makes it work so I absolutely adore how overall innocent she is even in spite of being stuck in an arranged marriage. I like seeing Kitov and Taneli interact the most. They have a beautiful, touching, and supportive relationship going on and I like how theyre similar in regards to world experience. It doesn't make it feel like either of them is somehow superior or has the upperhand, so it's just communication between equals.
RebelVampire
As for the art, I really like the character designs. They aren't overly complicated, but are each very unique as well, and I think overall they got that right fantasy DnD vibe to them that just really suits the story being told. I kind of like that the story is exploring the theme of duty and arranged marriages. Usually when it comes to arranged marriage, 90% of stories write protagonists that do everything in their power to escape and express their individuality and freedom. But I like that this story is kind of exploring the idea of duty and how we as people deal with the concept. I also just in general like it's exploring the political things surrounding it. Like I love that frank conversation Taneli had with the king about marrying him for the kid to become the ruler, and he was completely unoffended seeming. This was just a real refreshing approach since as much as I love freedom, I also love talking about when duty needs to override freedom. As for what I like about the comic's story is that this really feels like a tabletop campaign. So many stories claim to be tabletop rpg-like, but they really deviate from the feel I imagine when I think of such a story. So I kind of like that this comic captures that spirit of adventure perfectly. As for the comic's overall strengths, for me it's just kind of the whole fantasy package. Between the art, the world-building, story's feel of being a tabletop, I think the comic is like the epitome of high fantasy and hits all the notes I personally believe high fantasies need to hit. So if someone said fantasy comic, this would be at the top of the list for a comic I would think of.
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 2
9. Why do you think King Rishor was murdered, and why was Taneli seemingly framed in the process? Also, how do you think Leo got involved in everything, and how big of a role do you think he had in the plot?
10. What do you think will happen to Kitov and company as they search for answers and try to avoid capture? Will the group be able to find Leo, and if so, will that be enough to clear their names of suspicion?
11. Given Kitov and Taneli are both similar in regards to their experience levels, how do you think the events of the story will change them and their perspectives on the world? In what ways do you think they’ll remain the same?
12. How do you think the world itself will be affected by King Rishor’s death? Could it escalate into a war, or might Minash Turgal change for the worse? How will this affect characters like Lirre who helps Kitov and company out?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
RebelVampire
I get the impression King Rishor was probably murdered for two reasons. Once, to destabilize the country/kingdom/w/e you wanna call it, and two to start some sort of war (hence why you frame Taneli). Leo I think is just the pawn of someone else. In some ways, I kind of feel like Leo is a victim of great pain and that pain was somehow manipulated for nefarious means. As for Kitov and company, I think they'll find Leo, but heck no will that clear them of suspicion. You can't just escape and have no consequences or continued suspicion. That will not play into their favor. SO they're gonna have to just dig deeper and deeper into the plot and still run from the law at every turn. Though I do kind of feel they'll wind up back home at some point and find out things are bad there too somehow. As for the world itself, since I already mentioned this, I do think there's gonna be war brewing. Maybe not get to the point where it happens, but people will be scrambling around to prevent it and there'll probably be lots of angry people causing havoc in Minash Turgal cause these are the sorts of things where people need someone to blame. I think Lirre will probably be fine because I don't want to think about bad things happening to Lirre O_O Finally, regarding Kitov and Taneli changing. I think they're both gonna gain some smarts from this. I feel like Kitov could learn some more street smarts and learn that not every nice seeming person is a good person and that it's okay to distrust people you just met. Meanwhile, I think Taneli is just gonna learn the struggles normal people go through outside of the sheltered life she's lived, and that she'll be much wiser when it comes to politics. However, I think they'll both remain lovely people who are sweet and have that twinkle in their eye.
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I feel like the murder of King Rishor was foreshadowed on this page: https://cryptsandcantrips.kytri.net/comic/twelve-4/ With the whole "obviously the people like me, because if they didn't, they'd vote to replace me" bit. Like, sure, that's true on a country-wide scale... but votes are majority rule, not unanimous. And sometimes... the smaller group of people who disagree with you can be very vocal.
Comic Tea Party
DISCUSSION PROMPTS – PART 3
13. What are you most looking forward to seeing in regards to the comic?
14. Any final words of encouragement for the comic?
Don’t feel inspired by the prompts? Feel free to discuss anything else that interested you!
Erin Ptah (BICP | Leif & Thorn)
Taneli's my favorite too. She's very sheltered, but her heart's in the right place and she's adjusting as fast as she can, and she's active and enthusiastic which is great for plot motion. Plus, she gets the best clothes. I like the worldbuilding of "actually, our country has all kinds of mold-breaking things like non-hereditary elected rulers and public transportation." Here's hoping it catches on more widely. Leo's plotting is...complicated. Escorting the Princess gave him a great opportunity to get close for the assassination, and since he had the stuff in the luggage, it seems like he was plotting it the whole time. But the fact that Taneli was a Princess at all was supposed to be a secret from everyone except Kitov, right? The others were all surprised when it came out. Was it a plan that only came together when he arrived, and the poison was just planted to frame the others? Or was the poison in the luggage all along, and the secrecy of the whole mission was compromised from the beginning? Unrelated, I thought the sexual-orientation references were well-done. It's not like the whole cast sat in a circle and announced a list of identities each -- it came up naturally in one conversation with a few people, and they mentioned the parts of their experience that were relevant. Also really liked "masculinization potion." Some of the trans-related vocabulary stuck out from the rest of the dialogue, but this feels natural -- like, of course, those are the words a Medieval D&D Fantasy Person would use for it.
RebelVampire
What I'm most looking forward to seeing in the comic is probably just more of the plot revealed as to why assassinate the king and finding the whole motivation behind everything. Just because I'm hoping it opens up more questions to explore and also helps build the world. My final words are simply that this is a lovely comic with likeable characters and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes in terms of plot since the plot has definitely caught my interest.
Kytri
Hi, uh this is my first post here. I'm the writer/artist of Crypts and Cantrips. The week is over in about half an hour in my time zone, and I just wanted to stop in and say thanks for including my comic and for everyone's kind words.
My comics tend not to spark much discussion or feedback so it was a really nice change of pace.

yoooooooo okay okay
so i just finished megalo box. 1 season. 13 episodes. done.
alright alright alright im gonna say this right now even tho its a lil cliche to say.
it is not and will not be your typical sports anime.
some people were a little upset with how the final episode turned out that there was a little bit left to be desired. things like
“oh the ending was kind of lame” “the fight should have had more emotion” “really theyre just going to end it like that” “man i was super pumped for the final fight but that was just way over hyped i mean megalo box in general was super over hyped” “what a shit ending not even a good fight smh”
stuff like that. but like. what. the hell did you expect.
when it comes to sports anime like theres all this sort of weird idolization goin on and theres a lot of happy go lucky a hero’s journey sort of set up.  its good and its definitely a pick me up and they talk about friendship and it was the memories we made together and even if we loss we won in our hearts kind of thing. now dont get me wrong. i love that shit. its really nice to have something good like that.
megalo box tho? (to be fair i saw zero of the hype so i had no expectations about it i just happened to see some fanart of it from my favorite artists and i was like oof damn that shit looks good o damn its a series lets try and watch it) megalo box is a little bit harder to swallow (lmao not really but i mean in comparison to the routes that are usually taken in sports anime) ngl when he was joe was first throwin fights i really thought he was gonna do some big uproar to nanbu and then go off to do megalonia on his own and then prove himself or whatever. nah. he ate the fuckin cement. and nanbu? man that fucker did some underhanded shit, stuff thats not really put in to today’s series (like they do underhanded shit but like they do it so far that the crowd kinda ends up thinking the person who’s doing those shitty things is like either admirable or that theyre just so bad that they can be labeled as bad but their not held up to realistic standards) like there were parts where he paid for some of the things he had done he was shown as like a regular person like all of them were sachio especially like srsly i didnt expect them to go ahead and actually say that he was using joe to get revenge or even for joe to say “lmao yeah i actually dont care about your beef with your previous student i just wanna beat the shit out of him” like yo man like they were regular people and there were parts that were really good about each, annoying at parts, and parts that were like “yo dont be an ass” like there was so much more to each character and i mean the fights werent drawn out doing a back and forth back and forth that they usually do, making things hyper dramatic like everybody really had that much time to think a fucking monologue before hitting the ball to their teammate (dont get me wrong tho i get swept up in that shit and they do a hell of a good job at properly delivering that)
but the ending tho? wow it. yeah wow man. like wait before i go on like if you disagree with me thats totally chill but like this is just how it was for me its just my opinion so they definitely did have that going back and forth a little bit but they cut it short which im both surprised and happy that they did that feeling that i was left with that this is really what hes been working towards what gearless joe has been working towards is a feeling of i can do it and i did do it and ill do it again like him living out his life like oof man like hell yeah do what you like my boy cause i mean seriously lets all ask ourselves are they really gonna have joe lose? hell no come on its still anime so itll make these things happen but like from the very moment this series began you already knew who was going to win and you already knew how it was going to turn out and so they just stop it there cause you can probably imagine how it played out after that last punch and then the two of them sitting in solidarity? like jeez my dude thats some mad respect there and like all of those themes that a lot of other series try to do and put into their works like friendship respect teamwork trust honesty communication dealing with the past forgiving like it was portrayed and done in such an amount that was just right like not too much that its the only thing you can remember when you leave the series and not too little that it left you hella wanting more but just enough that its portrayed realistically and with a message thats still meant to get home like thats what megalo box did and was for me
so to wrap it up
megalo box was great
its been a while since ive had a series thats gotten me so wrapped up and so heartily content with its material that i can truly say that i love it

i grew up on south park and im fine like i have my own internalized shit i gotta work on and everybody does but i dont harbor so many of the nasty opinions that lame reddit bros who watch south park do and i really do think that’s a loud minority. so idk maybe south park raised a generation of trolls but the message ive always gotten from south park is just question things and think for yourself and be true to you. so idk why dumb boys would be faced with that message and just blindly repeat stuff said by cartman but hey! stupid people do stupid shit. south park likes to present a dumb idea by having a character believe it and then the episode is usually about breaking that down. but i guess if you already hold those dumb nasty beliefs youre just going to feel validated by seeing someone say it on tv and not listen when other characters call them stupid and they get a comeuppance. so it’s a shared responsibility of the creators and the audience, unfortunately matt and trey (like a lot of white and male artists tbh) think their work exists in a vacuum and that you arent responsible for what the audience makes of your work. i disagree with that mentality and i think the last two seasons show that theyre starting to realize that mentality is bullshit and has consequences. all the people i know who watch south park are my queer & trans friends in their 20s. like it obviously has more than one type of audience & it's reductive to act like south park only has one type of fan and is responsible for trolling on a whole when white guys have Been doing this awful shit they just got a new and nastier way to do it. i dont approve of all the things theyve said and done, some of it is Not Cool and Out Of Line. but i believe that theyre attempting to change and not be like that anymore cause theyve done some growing. so that’s how i feel about that.
