my toxic trait is i think death note is an actually for real unironically good manga which is better than even a lot of its fans give it credit for. like it has the subtlety of meat cleaver but also you have to pay attention to what that cleaver is cutting u know. it’s not an ironic or tongue & cheek work so if you look at it from that lens you’re going to miss a lot of what’s good about it i think.

#its funny and there are lots of tongue and cheek moments but the work as a whole is meant to be taken seriously #not like in a fancy literary way but just a ‘engage unironically’ way #my fear is this is going to sound like im vaguing someone or other but i promise this is just somthing im thinking about in relation to #like 15 years of discourse #ive noticed that as time passes people seem to take death note less seriously & more as something kind of bad which has some hidden gold #but i honeslty think that’s flatly untrue #i don’t think its the literal best thing in the universe or anything but i think its Very Good #also tbc ‘as time passes’ may just be a function of Me Personally aging fdgkjgdf i don’t mean this as a statement of the fandom #does this make sense. i hope this makes sense
