warnings- swearing, mentions of pregnancy
ladybug - KTH (drabble)

Saturday, june 11th, 2022
Taehyung set his phone down on the desk as it recorded him, he smiled and jokingly waved. "hello, today is.." he leans to check the date, "June 11th, its Saturday and the time is 4:54pm. Y/N is in the bathroom taking another pregnancy test because she is now a week late" he laughed and spun side to side in his chair. "I dont know why, but...I have a really weird feeling about this one, a weird but good feeling" he smiled and looked down. The past year has been very exhausting mentally for the both of you. After getting married, you both knew you wanted to have children right away, but your body didn't get the memo.
It was purely negative after negative, to the point where you refused to even take any tests for 3 months...up until now. Taehyung knew he wanted to journal your journey so that years from now you both could look back on the firsts of parenthood. He wrote down everything, from the good days to even the ugly ones, every appointment, every test, everything was in his notebook, and he was hoping that today would be *the* entry, he had a feeling it would be, so he decided on filming it just in case.
"ok, we have to wait 5 minuets" your voice is heard off camera as Taehyung looks up and across the room at you, "Ok" he smiles, waving you over. "cmere"
you nervously walk over as he places you onto his lap, long arms draping around your waist as you exhale. "filming?" you asked, watching him nod. "Do you want me not to?" he asked, "no, its fine, but what if its negative again?" you sigh and turn your body so your back is to the phone.
"then i can just delete it like the other ones" he ran his hand up and down your back, attempting to soothe you best he could. He was in his whole little nervous energy world right now and couldn't imagine how you were feeling, it had been months since the last test, and you werent sure you could take another hit with the reminder that your body isnt working.
It seemed like you had been waiting forever, tae had paused the camera 3 minuets after you came out, playing with your hair as you remained silent, hand in his. Your phone alarm could be heard from the bathroom once the long wait had ended. You, in that moment, wish you had another 5 minuets, because the second the alarm filled the air, your heart has stopped. "Im nervous" you whisper, standing up slowly as taehyung followed. "I know sweetheart, but we won't know unless we look, yeah?" he cupped your face gently, thumbs caressing your cheeks as he pressed a soft kiss to your lips.
You led him into the bathroom with you, "Wait dont turn it yet" he giggled and ran back to his phone he had left in the bedroom. You stared down at the upside-down test which sat on the edge of the sink, feeling your pulse in your ears. Once your husband returned, he closed the door and set up the filming, setting it a bit against the mirror as it faced you both. "dont be nervous, whatever it is, we will get through it ok?" he soothed, hugging you tightly and swaying a bit. It had been a few moments of preparation and deep breathing before finally feeling confident. "Ok ...im ready" you nodded, making him smile, "yeah?", he lifted the test, not flipping it yet. "yeah, but....you need to read it because I think I'll throw up if I do" you laughed, hiding your face in his chest as he breathed out, counting down in his head before finally flipping it.
"what does it say?" you whispered, fingers lightly gripping his t-shirt. Taehyung giggled nervously, "angel, Im not too good at reading these types of test....I-..I dont know if you are pregnant or not"
You let yourself smile at your husbands antics, pulling away to face the test, eyes widening. "baby..."
"what? is it negative?"
"Baby...two lines means pregnant, im pregnant." you turned to him, "Im pregnant" you whisper, taehyung not fully registering it until a few seconds after, head looking back down at the test.
"youre pregnant....." he looked back to you before a smile creeped onto his face, pulling you over and gently lifting you into his arms as tears escaped both of your eyes. there was no talking, just quiet (happy) crying, and touches and squeezes of love and emotion.
He finally set you back down and held your face. "Finally, damnit" you joke, making him laugh as he leans down to kiss you. "we are gonna be parents, baby. It is happening" he cooed sincerely, your hand wiping at his tears. you nodded, "its happening"
He kneeled down and lifted your shirt, his cold hands against your still flat stomach. "hi there" he whispered, making you cry even more as your hand ran through his hair. "we just found out about you, but mommy and daddy already love you so much" he kissed above your navel and held you close.
"Im so glad we got that on camera, fuck" you laughed as he stood up, wiping a tissue under your eyes. "I know!!" he sniffled and kissed you again. "god, I fucking love you"
"I love you too"
Tae picked the camera up and held it to both of your faces, making you giggle a bit. "welcome to the adventures of two 20 something year olds figuring out how to be parents, tune in next week for 'realizing we are too poor for this'" tae finished, shutting the camera off as you laughed and gently slapped his chest.
You sighed contently as he walked back into the bedroom with you, already becoming clingy with just the way he holds you. "this explains so much" you sit in thought, "I thought my period was coming because I was crying so much last week over everything but I guess not"
Taehyung smiled and crawled onto the bed next to you, hand rubbing your stomach. "oh my god, Taehyung, I had wine 2 days ago" you frown, grasping his hand. "im sure its okay, my mom used to have some wine when she was pregnant with me, and I think im okay" he smiled at you, his eyes scanning over your features lovingly. "dont stress, sweet girl, you are gonna be a mommy. We will plan an appointment this week and Ill be there for you ok? I promise" he kissed your hand as you looked up. "I love you so much"
"I love you more"

You had taken back everything you said about first trimester being the worst. Second trimester had absolutely everything to despise, and you realized it more each time you began to outgrow an article of clothing.
"theres mama" taehyung smiled brightly as he walked out of his office and into the living room with his camera, filming you on the couch. "shes wearing my sweatpants" he whispered and sat down, flipping the camera to the both of you. You pouted and looked at him, "baby I dont wanna be filmed, i look really gross" you sigh, "No you dont, you look sexy" he teased before shutting the phone off.
"are you still dizzy?" he asked, hand gently rubbing your thigh. "a little...but not as much"
the dizziness you've experienced since the second trimester has been the cause of worry for the past few weeks, despite your doctor telling you its normal.
"Just stay here, chill out and drink water" he smiled and got up to refill your water.
"I hate sitting down all day, its annoying" you huff, laying against the pillow. "I know baby, I know, but its not like your being lazy, you are creating a whole human, its a lot of work mama." he spoke, shutting the fridge to see the ultrasound photo hanging on the door.
You smile at him as he walks over, thanking him for the water. "Do you need anything else?" he asks, hand rubbing your slightly bigger stomach. You wouldn't have guessed you were almost 6 months pregnant, your bump has remained relatively small throughout the entire pregnancy, which you were thankful for, however it seemed like the weight just travelled to other parts of your body, like your feet.
"can you just lay with me?"
"of course baby" he moved to lay behind you, pulling you against him as you both watched tv, his hand finding its familiar place against your stomach, feeling soft flutters, something thats been occurring more recently.
"little ladybug is awake" he whispered and kissed your shoulder. You laugh and place your hand atop of his. You two had never figured out the gender, wanting to be surprised until they made their arrival, but Taehyung had a habit of calling the baby by "ladybug" ever since last month when you two laid outside and a small ladybug found its way to rest on top of your bump. He, of course, wrote the whole thing down in his journal as it happened.
Taehyung deep down didnt care the gender of his child, but he really wanted a little girl. A mini you. He wanted to take care of and protect his princesses all the time, and he so desperately wanted to make you both happy.

2 months later
You had woken tae up around 4am with severe cramping and back pain, he joined you on the floor in the bathroom as he placed a cold cloth on your neck. "just breathe, sweetheart." he sighed, trying to calm you down.
"What if they are coming early? Its too soon tae, and I-"
"shh, everything will be ok. You and ladybug are ok" he kissed your head. "Do you want to go to the ER?" he whispers, watching you nod as he helps you up carefully.
he helped you slip on your sneakers before getting into the car as he began driving to the hospital. "It doesnt feel like, I dont know how to explain.." you mumble, taking deep breathes
"What do you mean, love?"
"It doesnt feel normal and Im afraid something is wrong. Ive never felt this befor- ah!" you whine and hunch in pain as tae holds onto your hand and whispers soft words, promising he is driving as quick as he can.
Once he had helped you into the hospital, the doctor made him wait in the waiting room until they figured out what was the issue. Half an hour of leg bouncing, lip picking, and deep breathing later, a nurse finally stepped into the room to alert him of the situation. "Mr.Kim?" she asks, walking over as he sat up and nodded.
"ah, ok, So y/n is perfectly healthy and ok" she smiles and sits, "what she was feeling, is what the medical industry call 'braxton hicks', they are completely normal, its basically the body preparing itself for when the labor does in fact come." she adds, watching tae instantly relax upon hearing this. "I know its scary for a lot of first time parents but she and baby are in good health"
"thank god" he exhales and follows her back into the hall as he meets up with you again.
"Baby already causing problems for mommy huh?" he jokes and kisses your head, making you giggle and reach for his hand. "Did she tell you?" you ask
"mhm, nothing to worry about."
"kinda scary, if pre-labor feels that bad....then how is real labor gonna feel" you sigh, trying to avoid the thought despite the fact the baby needs to get out one way or another in just a few months.
"hey, look at me" he smiled, "everything will be ok, im right here" he squeezed your hand and leaned to kiss you softly, making you feel better already.
"I know, thank you"
Once you had fallen asleep, taehyung sat at the tiny desk across the room and began to film himself. "Hi ladybug, we are at the hospital because we thought you were making your grand entrance a month and a half early" he laughs quietly "but no, thank god. just stay in there and keep growing, you will meet us eventually" he smiled, "we love you"

march 3rd, 2022.
2:23 pm
You and taehyung had been adding the finishing touches onto the nursery, placing soft little blankets and bedding into the crib taehyung put together. "I like the colors, I think baby will like it" he spoke, adjusting the drawer and adding some more things into the hospital bag.
You were 9 months pregnant at this point, and there was nothing you hated more than moving. you sat in the rocking chair and nodded, watching your husband clean and organize. "hm what about this?" he asks, holding up a onesie that had pink ruffles. "are we bringing this"
"yeah" you smiled and ran your hand over your stomach
"ok" he put it into the bag and zipped it up, placing it by the door.
"Ok, I say we go get some lunch now. Let me help you get downstairs" taehyung smiled and reached out to hold your hands. You groaned and stood to your feet, wanting to just put all your weight against him. "you ok my love?" he coos
"mhm"
He began bringing you down the stairs and into the kitchen when you suddenly gasped, leaning against the back of the couch. "what??" he turned, watching your face turn to horror as you looked down. "I think....my water broke" you yelp in pain as a sudden sharp cramp covers your abdomen. "fuck, ok it hurts" you grasp onto his arms.
"ok, ok, uhm, well, well we need to go to the hospital now" Tae rambled, looking down at the small puddle, unsure where to go as he didnt want to leave you. "Go get the bags please, hurry up" you whisper as you rely on the support of the couch to keep you up.
Taehyung had ran quickly upstairs, nerves fueling his body but yet a smile creeped onto his face. His baby was finally coming, after all of these months, all of these moments, from when you told both of your families, to your baby shower, ultrasounds, shopping...its all coming together right now.
On his way back to you, he grabbed his phone and mindlessly began to film. "no time to talk, apparently you chose lunchtime to come greet us" he laughed and held the phone into his pocket as he came into the living room.
"tae it really fucking hurts" you cry, reaching for him again as he puts a coat over you. "I know sweetheart, its gonna be okay. We are gonna meet our little ladybug soon" he whispers, helping you stand on your own. "we are, huh" you breathe out, sudden excitement filling you.
"we are, time to officially be parents" he smiled and brought the bags into the car before helping you into the passenger seat. "I called Jin, hes coming to watch yeontan" he mumbled as he tried not to speed down the street as your groans became louder.
"hmmph, shit" you gripped the headrest of your seat as you tried not to cry, squeezing taes hand. "sorry if im hurting you"
Taehyung laughed, "its okay sweetheart, just breathe and focus on baby." he assured.
And thats what you did for the next 7 hours
-
"Hello my little ladybug" taehyung held his camera up to his newborn daughter as she laid against your bare chest. You were sweaty, tired, sore and ready to sleep for months, but you couldn't help but want to capture every moment with your new little family. "We waited so long for you, our sweet girl" he spoke, voice cracking as his hand reached out to hold hers, tiny fingers wrapping around just his one. Your eyes grew wet as you looked at him. "We are parents" you whispered, kissing your daughters head.
"you did such a good job, you are so fucking strong" he kissed you softly before turning his camera off, focusing all on you both.
"I cant wait to show her off to everyone, and spoil her" he added, watching her wide eyes look over at him.
"shes gonna be a very happy little girl" you smiled, watching the sweet interaction. between the two of them. "here, hold her again" you insisted as tae helped you sit up, taking the small newborn out of your arms gently.
"hi" he whispered, listening to her little coo's. He looked at her like she was his whole world. He never knew he needed anything more in his life after he married you, but now he can say with honesty and pride, he feels even more complete.
His wife, daughter, tannie and him.
His little place in the universe.

Rue – Clayton Keller
Summary: Ines has a bit of a dilemma, marry her ex-boyfriend or get deported
Author’s Note: I don't even go here but an anon suggested Clayton and I ran with it and loved every moment. This is obviously a dramatized version of immigration in America, while I tried to keep aspects as authentic as possible, I also took creative liberties to fit the story.
Also his mom's name is Kelley Keller and that is just so insane to me
Word Count: 9.2k
Album Series Masterlist
Don't wanna make it worse I'm gonna make it work
“What if you married Clayton?”
“You think marrying my ex-boyfriend for a green card is the answer?”
Ines doesn’t mean to raise her voice; Kat is just trying to help. But it’s been a long 24 hours and she can’t really control her emotions anymore.
“I think there should be reformed paths to citizenship. But that’s not going to happen in the immediate future, so I’m spit balling here.”
Ines flops face down on couch cushion and screams.
“I don’t hear you coming up with any better solutions,” Kat adds.
She lifts her head in shock, “You’re being serious?”
“Kat’s serious about what?” Nick comes back with drinks, his solution for comforting Ines.
“Nez should marry Kells for a green card,” Kat keeps saying it like it’s realistic.
Nick ponders the idea for a moment and shrugs, “It’s not the worst idea.”
“I’m just in a hellish nightmare, I’ll wake up and everything will be normal and everyone will be sane,” Ines rubs her temples.
Kat rubs her shoulder and nudges the drink closer to her.
Ines downs the drink and Schmaltzy passes his own drink before retreating for refills.
“I know it just happened, but have you thought at all what you’re going to do?”
“I mean, I’ve spent my whole life thinking about what I would need to do, it’s just never been so real.”
Ines feels a fresh batch of tears coming, she takes another drink to push them back. Nick comes back with a pitcher of drinks this time, clearly sensing where this night is headed.
“Didn’t one of your sisters have immigration problems?” Nick asks as he pours her a refill.
“Sort of, but it only came up because she was getting married and applying for a green card.”
Kat opens her mouth and Ines shoot hers a glare, “to the man she loves who happened to be an American citizen.”
“Yeah, well, you kind of still love Clayton,” Kat mumbles, “I mean you guys still have pretty regular sex right, Nick?”
Ines turns her boiling anger towards Schmaltzy, “Oh my god, he told you we were having sex?!”
“No, you told her,” he points towards Kat, “and she told me, Kells hasn’t said anything.”
“We don’t do it that often.”
She huffs defensively before squeezing her eyes shut, hoping to return from whatever alternative universe she stumbled into.
“I know the idea sounds insane but think about it, you have all these pictures of you two together, you never made some big breakup announcement or anything, and you still live with him.”
“I mean it would be pretty hard to prove that you aren’t together,” Nick adds.
“From what you’ve told me about this babe, marrying someone is the easiest way for you to get on the right track for citizenship without having to go back to Mexico, where you might not be allowed back.”
She knows Kat is right, that she’s making an excellent case, but that doesn’t make the idea any easier to swallow.
“There’s not enough alcohol in the world.”
Ines spends the next couple hours putting that theory to the test; she doesn’t process much, too busy preserving her brain in alcohol. She loses track of time, of what she should be feeling.
The alcohol makes her feel warm and giddy, but her brain is screaming at her to feels anxious and alert. The mix of the emotion just leaves her a sobbing mess, curled up in Kat’s arms.
Then she hears a shuffle at the door followed by Clayton’s voice.
“You told him?! Oh my god,” she buries herself further into Kat.
“We called him to take you home, we thought you’d prefer to wake up in your own bed.”
Nick is speaking to him in hushed tones and Ines is immediately suspicious.
“I don’t need you to marry me, arcilla, I’ll be fine in Mexico,” her filter is non-existent at this point but somehow, she can still talk this much through her tears and inebriation.
“What is she talking about?” Schmaltzy clearly didn’t spill the beans.
Kat sits up, cradling Ines off to the side, like she’s a child who’s not supposed to hear an adult conversation. Even one this pertinent to her.
“Someone found out she doesn’t have legal citizenship and he’s probably going to report her.”
“What the fuck,” Clayton feels every muscle in his body tense.
“And these two idiots think you should marry me so I can get a green card.”
“Oh.”
Clayton’s never been great with big emotions, and Ines’ tears mixed with her words has his brain frazzled. He came thinking he was just being the DD for Ines, not DD for Ines in distress.
“Nez, babe, why don’t we table this for tonight. Let Kells take you back to your own bed and sleep it off. We’ll start fresh tomorrow,” Kat gently moves some hair behind Ines’ hear.
Ines doesn’t respond, just stands up and follows Clayton to his car on wobbly legs.
The drive isn’t far, but Clayton still feels like he has to say something, anything. He can’t find the words; they aren’t his strong suit. So instead, he wordlessly reaches across the console and grabs Ines’ hand.
⁄⁄⁄
The sun pours through her curtains with a vengeance; telling her it’s pretty late in the morning without even needing to open her eyes. Normally, she would hate wasting most of her day away in bed, but sleeping is a nice escape; not just from reality but from the pounding headache she feels behind her eyes.
Ines flips onto her back and throws an arm over her eyes, debating whether getting up and eating something is better than sleeping more.
Clayton makes the decision for her with a knock on the door, he sheepishly pokes his head in before coming to sit at the end of the bed. Offering up a bag of food, which Ines greedily takes knowing it contains her favorite breakfast sandwich.
“You’re a lifesaver,” she moans after taking a bite, digging into the bag to grab the extra hot sauce she knows Clayton didn’t forget.
She looks up and chokes on her sandwich.
Clayton is holding open a ring box with a diamond ring.
“What the hell are you doing?”
“I talked to Schmaltzy and Kat this morning and you know, I think they’re right. Getting married to me is gonna be the easiest way for you stay in the country.”
“And ruin your life.”
“How will being married to you be that much different than it is now?”
He makes a good point. They broke up before the last off-season and he had offered to let her stay in his house since he would be traveling for a big chunk of the summer. Not worry about finding a new place while she got back on her feet. That was months ago and she’s still here, cooking him meals, cleaning up around the house, having sex with him.
The only real difference is she has her own room now.
“I don’t know, legal paperwork, maybe me being detained by ICE, you being shackled to me for god knows how long, probably two years at least. What if you meet someone?”
“I’m a professional athlete, I don’t think people would be to shocked if I cheated on you.”
Ines isn’t impressed by his attempt at a joke.
“This isn’t fair to you.”
“And it’s fair that you have to move back to a country you barely remember living in?”
He has a single-mindedness that no amount argument will sway. Especially while Ines is in this hungover state.
“Okay, Mr. Machismo, where’d you get the ring?”
“I– um– got it this morning, Kat helped pick it out. You know, need some proof this is real. And before you freak, I bought it with cash so there’s no paper trail or whatever.”
“Christ, you really thought this through?”
“You always told me it could be a possibility, so you know, I thought about what I’d do, especially when we were actually together.”
The look on his face makes her want to cry. He’s so sure; certain that she’s worth the effort, was worth having an escape plan for her.
“I know it’s crazy, but I’d hate to just sit by and watch you get torn away from your life when I could do something.”
“Okay,” Ines’ voice cracks, wet through the tears she can’t hold in anymore, “If you’re sure.”
Clayton nods, plucks the ring out of the box and holds it out on his palm for her; it seems too intimate or too sacrilegious for him to slip it on for her.
“I’ll call my immigration lawyer,” she twists the ring on her finger.
⁄⁄⁄
“Hola Ines!” Sierra, her immigration lawyer squeezes her tightly.
“And this must be the famous tonelada de arcilla,” Sierra grins at Clayton and shakes his hand.
“I can’t believe she told you that,” Ines grumbles as she takes a seat.
“Soledad couldn’t keep her big mouth shut if she tried,” Sierra moves to the other side of her desk, “besides I love your mom’s inability to understand American names, like Ashton.”
“Oh yeah, tonelada de ceniza,” Ines giggles.
“You’re saying I’m not special?” Clayton smirks.
“You’re very special mi arcilla,” she bumps his knee with her own.
“So, we’re here to talk about a marriage green card?” Sierra gets to business.
“We got engaged right before this, but now some asshole is threatening to report Nez’ status to immigration. So it sounds fishy, but we just want to start the process before anything happens.”
Ines nods with a tight smile. She was expecting Clayton to be here for moral support, not for him to take the lead.
“Okay, so we don’t know if he’s reported anything or if ICE will even investigate you. But since you work for a political organization that isn’t exactly beloved in Arizona, we’ll prepare for the worst.”
Instinctively, Clayton reaches out to hold Ines’ hand, stop her from fidgeting before she even starts.
Sierra looks at her watch, “we probably don’t have time to get you married today, but definitely can get your license today. It’s probably for the best, since this is kind of rush job you’ll probably want to dress up, have some friends as witnesses, make it clear this is above the board.”
Ines squeezes Clayton’s hand. Sierra is too busy shuffling through papers to notice any nerves, or maybe she’s just used to it.
“How’s that sound? Married by tomorrow, try to finish the paperwork in the next couple weeks?”
“Um- what about signing a pre-nup?” Clayton snaps his head towards Ines, “I mean I know it’s best if we have like joint accounts to show it’s legit or that I won’t end up on welfare immediately, but most people aren’t marrying millionaires.”
“You don’t need to sign a pre-nup,” Clayton sounds almost hurt at her suggestion.
Ines slips her hand out of his, “Don’t be stupid, we’re only moving this fast because of me, I don’t want you to be at any legal risk just because I need a green card.”
“I haven’t worked with a case quite like this, but a pre-nup might help your case that this is for the right reasons and not just for a green card.”
Ines starts chewing on her thumbnail, Clayton grabs her hand to stop her.
“I’m not your agent, but we can probably draft a quick contract of sorts that will say she will sign a post-nuptial and you can sort that out after with your people.”
Sierra then goes on a spiel about what to expect, what documents they’ll need, forms they need to fill out, the medical exam Ines will need. Clayton is trying to pay attention, but his eyes are glazing over. She hooks her foot around his ankle and tries to give him her most grateful smile, she hopes it doesn’t look too much like a grimace.
They find themselves at the courthouse the next day. Kat had insists they don’t see each other before the wedding, so they go in separate cars. It makes no sense since the foursome all knows this isn’t real, it’s all an act.
Kat stops her on the steps of the courthouse,
“You have your something old with the dress,” she gestures to the huipil her abuela had made for her mother, it was the only mostly white thing she owned, though it was mostly covered in bright colored flowers.
“And your something new with that rock on your finger, so here’s your something borrowed and blue,” she digs through her purse for a box with a pair of simple sapphire earring.
“You know it’s not–“
“This may not be your dream wedding, but let’s no fuck around with good luck.”
Kat looks like she wants to say more, but that’s not something Ines wants to dissect at the moment. She pulls her into a tight embrace instead.
Clayton and Nick are already waiting inside. Ines makes a silly scrunched up face that Clayton returns.
“Don’t be gross,” Kat nudges her, it’s when Ines realizes she’s filming.
“I honestly thought you were gonna wear a Gucci t-shirt,” Ines grins when they stop in front of the guys.
“I made him put on something with a collar,” Nick gives Clayton a playful shove.
“Aww he could have been your something blue,” Kat coos as Ines fixes the collar of Clayton’s steel blue shirt.
“But I still would have needed something borrowed,” she laughs until she remembers she’s borrowing Clayton, she drops her hands to her sides like they caught on fire.
Thankfully, the clerk calls their names, saving them from dwelling too long on that truth.
The ceremony takes all of 15 minutes. Ines all too aware of her hands sweating in Clayton’s as they hold hands in front of the judge. Picture perfect.
“By the power vested in my by the state of Arizona, I know pronounce you married!”
When neither react right away the judge speaks up again and winks, “now would be a lovely time to kiss.”
An awkward giggle bubbles out of Ines, but then Clayton is cupping her face and kissing her. She kisses back, and what should probably be a more chaste kiss gets a little heated. Ines likes kissing Clayton, sue her.
They’re broken a part by the obnoxious cheers from Kat and Schmaltzy. Both are flushed when they pull away, neither quite sure if it’s from lust or embarrassment.
“Now that’s how you start off a marriage, congratulations,” the judge smiles.
⁄⁄⁄
Ines is fidgeting with everything. She’s moved a vase of flower about twenty times, though it’s only moved about 1 inch away from its original place.
Clayton grabs her arms and pins them to her sides, “relax, it’s just your family.”
“Oh yeah, my totally calm, quiet, chill family. Nothing to worry about.”
“Your family loves me, we’ll be fine,” he lets her arms go and she immediately moves the vase again.
“Where’s your ring?”
She reaches into the pocket of her dress, “My mom will notice it immediately, I’ll put it on after we tell them,” she starts to turn before wheeling back around, “that we’re engaged they don’t need to know we’re actually married, I don’t want them worrying about immigration.”
Clayton nods.
“And where’s your ring?” she instinctively grabs his hand to look.
“You just said they shouldn’t know we got married,” he laughs at her pinballing thoughts.
Ines opens her mouth to say something but he cuts her off by pulling out one of his chains, the silver ring hanging off of it.
“Okay,” she lets out a sigh, “keep it in your shirt, arcilla.”
Ines moves over to straighten an already pristine tablecloth; all the deception is making her ill. She doesn’t want to tell anyone, but she knows the news will get out somehow, and her mother will never forgive her. She might not forgive her if she learned she’s already married.
“When are we gonna tell your family? We can’t just be ‘engaged’ for two years or so without them knowing.
“We can call them after probably,” he shrugs, his confidence over this decision clearly wavering a bit. Ines feels secretly happy about that, they’re on a level playing field.
The doorbell rings, the commotion of her immediate family barely muffled through the door.
“Showtime,” Ines plasters on a big smile.
The family stumbles in, a cacophony of Spanish follows as they all speak over each other to greet Ines and pass off food.
“Clayton, mi amor,” Ines’ mom cups his face and kisses him all over before pulling him into a tight embrace, “I knew you two would figure it out.”
“Yeah, I’m glad we did.”
He takes some food and follows Ines to the kitchen as she gives directions to her family in Spanish. They’ve been together long enough he recognizes some of it, but he feels bad for never trying to learn Spanish in earnest.
One of her sisters, Teresa, is pouring shots of tequila. Ines smirks at him and is about to comment when a small body rams into him.
“Clayton! Look I lost a tooth at hockey,” Ines’ niece, Marisol smiles to show off the gap.
“She didn’t lose it during a game, she lost it shooting in our driveway,” her twin brother Mateo sneers.
“You’re just mad you have all your teeth still,” she sticks her tongue out.
“You know when you get adult teeth you want to keep them all, even as a hockey player,” Ines butts in.
“Whatever tia,” the little girl rolls her eyes and gets a scoff back from her aunt.
“The new season just started, how’s the new gear?” Clayton changes the subject.
“I don’t have to wear three pairs of socks in my skates anymore, and the sticks are so nice.” Mateo’s eyes gleam with excitement.
“Maybe later we can shoot around a bit,” Clayton smiles back.
The twins cheer at the idea before running off to tell their mom.
“You bought them gear for their new season?” Ines furrows her brows.
“Yeah, I have my connections,” he tries to play it off.
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“No, but last season they had all that hand-me-down gear, it was literally the least I could do for getting them into the sport in the first place.
Ines nods.
“Lovebirds, we’re taking shots in your honor,” Teresa calls them over to the rest of the adults and hands them cups.
“¡Arriba, abajo, al centro y pa’dentro!”
The tequila goes down smooth, relaxing her enough to rip off the band aid.
“Well, we have something else for you to cheers,” Ines leans into Clayton’s side before reaching into her pocket and putting on the ring, “we’re engaged.”
There are screams, hugs, kisses, and even some tears. Ines feels the alcohol going to her head far faster than it should. Another glass being thrust into hand and another toast.
“Felicidades mija,” Ines’ dad brings her in close.
He’s a man of few words, partially because he never really learned the language of his new country. Those two simple words and the joy in his eyes makes Ines want to weep. He turns to Clayton, placing a strong hand on his shoulder and holding his other hand out.
“Bienvenido a nuestro familia.”
“Uh, gracias Hector, soy muy um–“ he leans over to Ines “how do I say I’m very excited?”
“Está muy emocionado, papi.”
“¡Más tequila!” He shouts and the family cheers.
“He’s happy for us, right? Not trying to kill me?” Clayton ribs Ines.
“I think this might be a test, if you die you wouldn’t have fit in anyway,” she smiles back.
“So, when are you going to get pregnant, mija?”
“Jesucristo mamí,” Ines furiously blushes, “couldn’t you have at least asked that in Spanish?”
“It takes both of you, I thought he should understand too.”
Her family is a little less embarrassing the rest of the party, they genuinely seem excited for Clayton to join the family. Her niece and nephew ask if Clayton is finally their real tio while she watches them pass around a ball on the sport court in the backyard.
Her heart aches with the truth.
It’s keeping her up in her bed. Usually, after that much tequila she’d be asleep within minutes, but there’s too much going on in her brain.
Her door creaks open and Clayton creeps into the room.
“How drunk are you still?” Ines tries to suppress the smile in her voice as Clayton clumsily crawls into the bed.
He merely grunts in response and moves around to get comfy.
“And you’re in here why?”
“I think the air conditioner isn’t getting into my room,” he mumbles and drapes an arm over Ines, burrowing his head into neck.
He can’t see her epic eye roll; she knows the air conditioner is probably fine and there are two other guest rooms he could use.
“You don’t have to lie, I know you like to cuddle when you’re drunk, babe.”
She winces at her casual use of a pet name, feels Clayton freeze for a second too.
She runs a hand through his hair until he relaxes again, “since my family tried to poison you, I’ll make you a hangover-approved breakfast before practice tomorrow.”
He hums in response, breath evening out until he’s asleep.
Ines is quick to follow, the weight of his arm a grounding comfort.

A month into the regular season and Ines still hasn’t been to a game. Kat warned her some of the significant others were starting to talk. Rumors of her breaking up with Clayton before the off-season had been swirling around. Sure, those rumors were true, but there was no concrete reason to believe them until her recent absence.
From what Ines heard about other teams, this group wasn’t particularly cliquey or gossipy. But sometimes that meant when there was something to talk about, they were hyper-focused. And that seems to be the situation now.
So being the girlfriend/fiancée/wife/whatever the hell she is to a member of team leadership, she invited the group over for dinner and drinks to watch an away game.
In actuality, it comes at the perfect time. Ines likes planning and organizing and it’s the perfect way to keep her mind off everything else. The most pressing being that Clayton is in St. Louis and made her promise to Facetime with him and his parents after the game. Keeping up appearances when she didn’t travel for the first game with her future in-laws.
Coming in at a close second is the fact the Blues are playing in town the day before Thanksgiving, so his mom thought it was a great time to visit for the holiday. Especially since Ines couldn’t make it out to Missouri this trip.
She’s already nauseous at the thought of moving her stuff back into the master bedroom, hiding all evidence of the truth. For now, the door is locked, so no nosy and/or drunk women pop in tonight.
“Pour yourself a drink and sit the fuck down Nez, the game is about to start,” Kat warns from her spot on the couch.
Ines stops organizing the growing pile of mail and rolls her shoulders back. She grabs a new bottle wine, knowing this group has already emptied the ones on the table before the anthem is even finished. She settles in the middle of the couch and cuddles into Kat’s side.
It’s nice to be back with a group of friends. Ines always gets lonely in the summer when most of them go back home and she’s stuck here, but this summer had been especially brutal.
“Ines, what the hell is that?” Claire shouts moments after puck drop.
Ines’ eyes dart around the room, looking for a scorpion or something that made it into the house.
“The ring on your finger!” Claire is grabbing her hand; the game is quickly forgotten in favor of this.
“Clayton proposed,” she feels her mouth attempt to smile, but it feels all wrong.
“Finally!” Someone cheers from behind her and the rest of the group seems to concur.
She didn’t mean to leave the ring on, it still feels so bulky and foreign. But she’s trying to at least wear it to work, so it doesn’t seem like some secret green card relationship. Though maybe keeping it from the WAGs makes it seem like a dirty secret.
In her mind it’s easier to cut and run from work acquaintances if this all blows up in her face. Clayton is stuck with most of these people, and Ines can’t imagine hurting him when he’s being so kind.
“Look how red she’s turning, no wonder she was staying away from us, Nez hates the spotlight,” Claire laughs.
“How did it happen?”
Ines wants to melt into the couch.
“Nothing special, he just brought me my favorite hangover breakfast and proposed while I was still in bed,” she shrugs, not wanting to lie more than necessary.
“Makes it convenient if you’re already in bed,” Kat waggles her eyebrows and Ines punches her arm.
“He knows I wouldn’t have accepted anything that wasn’t lowkey.”
“Yeah, except that gorgeous diamond, good work Kells,” Claire adds, giving the ring one last look before the action onscreen grabs back their attention.
Ines is a little wine drunk by the time the ladies clear out. Her face feels flushed and warm as she tries to clean up wine glasses and plates.
There’s one bottle with a little wine left and she pours herself another glass while she waits for Clayton to call. She starts to go through the mail she tossed aside before the game. A reminder for a dentist appointment, a credit card statement, a letter asking to go paperless for billing.
Her phone starts to buzz against the kitchen island, she answers the Facetime wishing it were a phone call instead.
“Hi arcilla, you played well tonight,” she’s actually not positive he played well, she mostly drank and caught up with her friends.
She looks down to the mail again, an official looking envelope addressed to her stares back at her.
“You, okay?”
“Yeah, sorry I’m a little tipsy,” she holds up her glass of wine for him to see.
“You had fun then?”
His dimple is on full display when he smiles and it reminds her of when they used to do this all the time; a call before either went to bed just to say hello or see each other’s faces. Ines knows what every hotel wall and headboard looks like in the NHL.
She plays with the corners of the envelope, “This is great and all, but I thought this was so I could say hi to your parents.”
Clayton starts to move, “they wanted to give us some privacy first.”
“Did they think we were gonna have quick phone se-ehh,” Ines peters off when his parents appear on screen.
Clayton is trying to hold back a laugh while Ines feels her flush grow brighter, “Hi Kelley, hi Bryan.”
“Hi honey, when are we gonna get you out here?” His mom asks.
“Sorry ,work never seems to be in my favor.”
She lies, it’s easier than saying she hasn’t been on a plane in 20 years because she’s afraid she’ll get deported. She’s never seen Clayton’s family outside of Arizona or somewhere within driving distance. They haven’t seemed too bothered, but she’s always worried they’re just good at hiding their true thoughts.
“One day,” she smiles, “we’re excited to see you in a couple weeks, is there anything you want us to make special for Thanksgiving?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? You’re coming to our house.”
“Let me be a mom and take care of it” she scoffs, “you are my first daughter.”
Ines just nods because her voice might crack if she speaks.
“We’re getting a late dinner, so we’ll let you go. But can’t wait to see you, Ines,” Bryan says and gives a wave.
“Yeah, should be fun, enjoy dinner,” she waves back.
“Bye babe, love you,” Clayton waves, his eyes go wide before the call ends.
She’d give the moment more thought if she wasn’t itching to rip open the envelope in her hands.
Notice to Appear.
December 11th.
Suddenly the walls feel like they’re closing in.
⁄⁄⁄
When Clayton gets home from the road trip Ines is in the hot tub. Her muscles having felt wound tight for the last week.
“Saw you’re all moved in,” he says as he dangles his legs into the tub.
Ines doesn’t open her eyes to look at him, just nods.
“And you have your immigration hearing in December.”
She nods again, she left the letter out by the table where they put their keys. She didn’t want to talk about it, but she had to tell him.
“I’ll be in Buffalo that day, but I–“
Ines opens her eyes, gives him an exasperated look, “You’ll play a hockey game and I’ll be fine on my own.”
“It’s not–“
She moves closer, almost to the space between his legs, “you’re doing so much for me, please don’t fight me on this. Just go play hockey.”
“Okay,” he nearly whispers.
Ines thinks about how easy it would be to give him a blow job right now, let her mind go blank for a bit. Shut up Clayton for a bit.
Before she can actually act on those thoughts, he places a hand on her cheek, running his thumb across her cheek bone.
“And you’re doing, okay?”
She honestly doesn’t know, but she does know she doesn’t want to talk about it.
So, she grabs Clayton’s wrist and pulls him in closer. She doesn’t wait for him to catch up, smashing their lips together and pushing her tongue into his mouth before he even starts kissing back.
He’s quick to catch up to her. Pulling her flush against him, filling the space between his legs. It’s the first time they’ve done this since they got married, it feels like all the building tension is finally exploding. Ines feels molten.
Clayton unties the back her bikini top and tosses it somewhere behind him with a wet splat. His hands cover her chest and she can’t help but shiver, maybe from the cold air but probably not.
She grabs his hair and pulls him away from her, “we should take this inside.”
Without second thought he pulls her out of the hot tub and towards the house, the strings of her bottoms undone and left outside as well. Ines paws at his shirt, trying to get her own fill of skin.
He pulls it over his head in one fluid motion as he maneuvers Ines towards the bedroom. Her back hits the mattress before she realizes they’re in the master bedroom.
They haven’t done this here since the break up six months ago, like it’s too intimate, too full of the past.
Clayton is hovering over her, the chain with the wedding ring dangling. The room is filled with her belongings again and she feels like she’s in some alternate universe. A world where they never broke up, where marriage was a logical step in the future.
She tries to clear her mind again, pulling Clayton down for a kiss because she wants this.

An alarm starts to blare and she feels the other side of the bed move.
“Sorry, that’s mine,” Ines apologizes and turns it off.
She lays back and stares at the ceiling for a bit. It feels too familiar to wake up in here, naked in the softest sheets she’s ever felt. But nothing has actually shifted, she’ll get out of bed and everything will be as it was.
She rubs the sleep from her eyes and gets out of bed to take a shower. Clayton is getting ready for practice when she gets out of the bathroom.
“I forgot how nice that shower is, you should redo the one guest bathroom, it could have better water pressure,” she jokes, though it doesn’t really land.
She wanders into the walk-in closet where she’s haphazardly put away some of her clothes, she feels Clayton follow her in, even though he’s mostly dressed.
“My parents get in today; do you want to go to the game with them tonight?” He sounds like he’s asking out a girl for the first time.
“The twins have a music recital or play or something I said I’d go to, but they can take my car to the arena so you don’t have to worry about that.”
She drops the towel on the floor and starts getting dressed for work, stopping before she zips up her dress, reading between the lines of Clayton’s question.
“But I’ll be at the game with them on Wednesday, I mean if you can get me a ticket,” she turns to flash a smile at Clayton to find that’s he’s only a step away.
“I think I can manage that,” he turns Ines around, moving her hair out of the way and zipping up the dress for her, fingers lingering at her neck for a second too long.
Ines stops herself from shivering and turns around, “I have to leave, but see you after the game.”
She gives him a quick peck against her better judgement, “good luck.”
The casual touches don’t disappear in the following days. Ines can’t tell if they’re putting a show on for his parents or not. The touches seem too instinctive to just be a spectacle, but maybe that’s because they’re sharing a bed again and can’t seem to keep their hands off each other behind closed doors.
Though that seems to be seeping outside of the bedroom, too.
The morning after his parents arrive, Kelley is in the kitchen making coffee and gives them a knowing look when they come out of the bedroom, as if to tell them they were too loud even from the other side of the house. Ines decides to pick up breakfast on her way to work rather than sit through breakfast at home.
That night Ines is laid out on the couch not paying attention to the football game playing on TV. Clayton lifts her head up and then places her back down on his lap when he sits.
She groans as she tries to get more comfortable, “You make a terrible pillow, you’re too bony.”
“I think it’s the titanium rod in my leg,” he says back, squirming underneath her to make her more frustrated.
“You were bony before then too,” she rolls her eyes and pretends to focus on the game and ignore Clayton’s fingers brushing under her shirt.
Wednesday is a half day for Ines, she gets home to a surprisingly empty house and enjoys drinking a beer and mindlessly watching Tiktoks in peace.
“Hey, wasn’t expecting you home,” Ines jumps when Clayton comes up behind her.
“Wasn’t expecting to find an empty house,” she shrugs.
“My parents are picking up Jake from the airport,” he wraps his arms around Ines’ waist, “I was about to take my pre-game nap, but I wouldn’t say no to some company.”
He presses a couple kisses into her neck, “an afternoon nap sounds nice.”
She barely finishes the sentence before he’s walking her to the bedroom. Clayton is a little handsy as Ines crawls into the bed.
“I’m serious about an actual nap, I won’t be held responsible if you have a bad game.”
Clayton rolls away, hands up in surrender.
Ines rolls towards him wrapping an arm around his middle, “For all your suffering, I’ll give you a blow job if you win tonight.”
“A victory blow job? You didn’t even do that when we were dating,” he chuckles, the sound amplified with her ear on his chest.
“What can I say, I’m in a giving mood,” she kisses his pec and closes her eyes.
Clayton’s alarm goes off and Ines groans.
“You can sleep longer,” he runs a hand through her hair before slipping out from under her.
“Nah, I’ll just be more tired later,” she rolls over but doesn’t get out of the bed, watches Clayton go into the closet.
“You should wear the green suit from the awards, it’s a special request from Marisol.”
“Oh yeah?”
“She thinks I have a say over what you wear and she told me it’s her favorite,” she watches Clayton start to get undressed, “you did look hot in it,” she smirks when he fumbles with a hanger in response.
When he comes out dressed, he still has bedhead. Ines gets up to fix it, he jokingly bats her hands away as they leave the room.
“Just let me fix this one piece arcilla, you look like we just fucked,” she stops in her tracks at the sight of Clayton’s family, “Hi Jake, good to see you.”
Jake nods in her direction, not particularly friendly, but she can pretend it’s because of the awkward conversation they just heard.
Ines knows Clayton told his brother everything, or more than Ines would like. She’s not sure exactly what he told his parents about the break up, but they seem to have forgiven anything pretty quickly. She knows Jake is a little weary of her now, and maybe her motives.
Clayton is either oblivious or just trying to play it off and gives him a bro-hug before he heads off to the game
The awkward air between Jake and Ines remains, not that they were ever specifically close, but this feels extra icy. She tries to avoid sitting next to him, but the two get caught between the parents. And she’s not even in her usual seats near Kat to have a buffer.
The game is a bit messy, passes aren’t connecting, the power play might as well be missing, but the crowd is into it. Mullett is small enough to feel like you’re always in the game, which helps Ines because before Clayton she knew next to nothing about hockey. Being this up close means she’s 99% sure she understands the rules, except goalie interference.
The second period ends with the Blues up by one, which isn’t too bad considering how the game is looking.
“Have you two talked about any wedding plans?” Kelley turns to Ines,
On her other side she hears Jake snort on his drink, she makes a mental note to double check how much Clayton has told his brother.
“Not really, I had a quinceañera so I already had my big party and fancy-dress moment,” it’s the truth, her 15th birthday fulfilled a lot of princess dreams she may have had.
“You’re both still young, you can have long engagement to figure it out if you want.”
Ines feels the anxiety seep out of her bones.
“You two could even get married at a courthouse if that’s that you wanted.”
The tension comes back so quickly it almost gives her whiplash.
Jake shoots up and mumbles something about food. Ines would follow him, but she’s not sure a public confrontation is the best idea.
Thankfully there’s some more hockey to distract her, the Coyotes end up clawing back but lose in OT on a poorly timed line change.
There’s not a great place to wait for the boys at Mullett, so they sit in their seats for a while before meandering down.
Kat jumps on Ines the moment she sees her.
“Look who’s gracing us with her presence,” Kat kisses her cheek and slides off her back before she can accidentally knock them to the ground.
“Yeah, yeah, I get it, bad WAG alert,” Ines swats her away.
She hears Jake mumble something, but can’t quite make it out. That’s when Kat actually seems to comprehend that Clayton’s family is here.
“The two lovebirds have been busy being cooped up, we haven’t seen them both in the flesh for a while,” she gives a cheeky smile and winks at the Kellers.
“We’re in the same house and they’re having a hard time keeping it in the bedroom, so consider yourself lucky,” Bryan laughs with Kat while Ines cheeks burn.
“Oooh la la Nez, loving this pre-honeymoon phase for you,” she gives Ines a meaningful pinch on the side, a warning they will be talking about this later.
“Speak of the devil,” Kelley laughs and pulls her son into hug.
“Kells show me some of this PDA everyone is talking about,” Kat is clearly not above egging this on despite the sharp look Ines gives.
Clayton pulls her in tight, ducking his head so he can whisper to her.
“Sorry, I didn’t live up to our end of the bargain. No prize for me,” he fake pouts.
“Cause I’m still in a giving mood, here’s a consolation prize for a one-point night,” Ines pulls Clayton in for a kiss, ignoring the catcall from Kat.
“That’s it?” Clayton her pulls her in tightly to his side.
“Don’t push it,” she elbows him in the side, ignores the knowing look Kat is directing her way.
Ines manages to convince everyone the brothers should ride home together, since they don’t see each other enough. Partially, to prove to Kat that there’s nothing going on; partially hoping that Clayton and Jake will talk through whatever weirdness is going on.
⁄⁄⁄
“Do you have to go golfing and leave me alone with your mom?” Ines complains before stuffing her face in the pillow
“You like my mom,” Clayton rolls back onto the bed and rubs her back.
“Yeah, but preparing Thanksgiving is like serious mother-daughter shit, I’d love some backup.”
“You could come golfing.”
“Cause I’d love to get made fun of instead.”
“Those are kind of your two options,” he kisses her shoulder.
“Fine, staying home it is,” she flips over onto her back, “can you at least make sure Jake won’t be weird when you guys come back.”
“He’s just looking out for me, doesn’t want you taking advantage of me,” Clayton absentmindedly traces up and down her arm.
“Did you tell him this was your suggestion? And that I signed a pre-nup? I won’t take advantage and steal your money if that’s what he’s worried about.”
His hand stills for a moment, “I’ll talk to him again, don’t worry about it.”
He stands up again, “have fun cooking.”
“I hope you lose!” Ines calls back.
Ines wanders into the kitchen an hour later, Kelley already deep in prep.
“Sorry, I went back to sleep. Though I’ve never cooked Thanksgiving so I don’t know how much help I’ll be.”
“You’re a great cook, I think you’ll be fine,” Kelley laughs before instructing her on how to finish prepping the stuffing.
Ines takes off the engagement ring and places it in the middle of the island, out of reach. She rubs the naked finger and notices there’s already a faint tan line. She flexes the fingers, like that will give her some answers. Like why taking it off doesn’t feel like unhooking an anchor that’s pulling her under anymore.
She looks up to see she’s been caught by Kelley. If she has some thoughts, she doesn’t share them with Ines.
They work mostly in quiet, the Thanksgiving Parade playing on the TV in the other room. Kelley stopping every once in a while, to watch or tell Ines about watching the parade growing up. How Clayton used to worry the balloons were going to eat the people holding them when he was a toddler.
“This is your first turkey?” Kelley says as Ines puts the bird in the oven
“Yeah, I spent most of my Thanksgivings helping my mom with housekeeping, so can’t do this but ask me to make a bed, I got you,” Ines laughs.
“This calls for a toast then,” Kelley finds some Bailey’s and pours it into their coffees, “To sharing my secrets with my new daughter.”
She clinks her mug against Ines, the sound scrambles something in Ines’ heart, “You know Clay and I broke up right?”
Kelley takes a long sip of her coffee and hums.
“He told us you needed some time apart. Because of all the uncertainty around the team and some things he didn’t really get into,” Kelley trails off.
“It’s understandable you’re both so young and had to go through some really intense things together. I think it was really mature what you two decided, but I’m really glad you worked it out, you make Clayton so happy. I think happier than hockey, if that’s possible.”
Ines lip starts to wobble, she tries to stop the tears. But how can she when even Clayton’s mom believes their lie? How can she break her heart down the line?
“Oh darling,” Kelley pulls her into a tight embrace that only a mom can give, “love is never easy, and if down the road it’s not right anymore, that will be okay too. It’s privilege to find love at all.”
That sends Ines into another wave of sobs. She buries her face into Kelley’s shoulder as she gently rubs Ines’ back and sways them side to side.
Once her cries seem to calmed down to sniffles, Kelley moves away enough to see Ines’ face. She wipes away the few stray tears, “I see the way you two look at each other when you think no one’s watching, I think you’ll happy together for a very long time.”
Kelley smiles, her eyes a little glossy like she might cry too. And with a shaky breath Ines tries to give her a smile back.
They hear the door open and the boys start to come into the house.
“Who won?” Kelley calls out as they come around the corner.
Ines tries to busy herself by rolling out the pie crust they had forgotten.
“Jake squeaked one out,” Bryan comes around the island and kisses Kelley, “smells great ladies, you need any help?”
“Not right now, we were gonna take a break soon,” Kelley winks at Ines.
Clayton comes and leans into Ines from behind, his hands boxing Ines in. He kisses her cheek before he notices her eyes rimmed red.
“You, okay?” He whispers, kissing below her ear.
“Yeah, whatever onions we bought were like tear gas,” she cracks a smile and leans back into him.
“We had to evacuate for a while, I think we just got it under control before you guys came home,” Kelley smiles and pulls Bryan out of the kitchen, following the sounds of a football game Jake put on.
Ines turns around, still boxed in by Clayton. She wraps her arms around his shoulders and hangs her weight on him, feeling a bit tired. He moves his hands to her hips, giving them a gentle squeeze.
“Was it rough morning alone with my mom?”
“No, it was really nice, actually.”
She pulls back to give him a genuine smile, plays with the ends of his hair, “And did you talk to Jake?”
“Yeah, and I let him win so I think he’ll be in a good mood.”
“Wow, you did that for me?”
“Yeah, of course,” he smirks before dipping down to kiss her.
“Why can’t you let me win?” Ines pouts when the pull a part.
“I can’t act that well,” he’s biting back a mischievous grin, “but if you ask nicely, I can help you improve your back swing.”
He’s gently moving her hips side to side when Ines gives him a playful shove, “Keep it in your pants Keller, your family is in the other room.”
“Hasn’t stopped you much this week,” he pulls her flush against his chest, his hands wandering to her ass.
“Oh my god, there’s not gonna be that kind of giving today.”
Clayton’s about to respond, “Is it safe to come into the kitchen or are you two fondling each other?”
Ines moves Clayton’s hands off her butt and to his sides, “All clear Jake, your brother was just leaving to take a shower, a cold one,” she whispers the last part.
Jake makes a gagging sound, “you two are gross.”
“One day you’ll have someone to fondle other than yourself,” Clayton punches his brother in the arm on the way out of the kitchen.

Ines and Kat are sitting on the steps of the courthouse, finishing their coffees. The coffee was probably a mistake, it’s sitting acidic and heavy in her stomach.
At least the universe wasn’t cruel enough to have her hearing at the same courthouse as she got married. She doesn’t think her heart could take the irony.
Kat is jittery, her knee bouncing erratically. Caffeine doesn’t have that kind of effect on her, so Ines knows it must be something else.
“I think I’m supposed to be the nervous one.”
“I still don’t understand why you broke up with Clayton in the first place.”
Ines whips her head around like there’s someone waiting around the corner to record this kind of damning evidence.
“You said you’d explain, but you never did. And it’s clear you still have feelings for him.”
Ines scoffs.
“Fine, you don’t love him, then tell me why you broke up and why you never moved out? You had plenty of time to find a new place, Nick and I would have let you move in.”
“I was tired of holding him back.”
Ines gulps down the cold remnants of her drink.
“It was so exhausting telling him no. No, I can’t go home with you to meet your parents. No, I can’t go to the All-Star Game in Florida cause it’s not in driving distance. I can’t be your date to a wedding because I can’t get on a plane. I can’t have bye week with all our friends in the fucking country I was born in because I may not get to come home!”
She tries to take even-keeled breaths; she doesn’t want to start crying before her hearing even starts.
“And he couldn’t tell people because what if someone slipped up and I got deported, or worse they found my parents or Soledad. She has kids!”
Kat puts a gentle hand on her knee.
“And he shouldn’t have to deal with that, he could find someone less complicated and someone who could actually be there for him.”
“Did he ever tell you those things were a problem?”
“No, but I could see how frustrating all those little things were becoming; how upset he’d get with every new thing I couldn’t do.”
“Yeah, he’s upset because you couldn’t live a full life without worry. Because he loves you, Ines! He’s still in love with you.”
“No, he isn’t. He’s just nice. He would have said something by now, not just married me and suffered in silence.”
“Oh, he should have said something? Like you’re saying something because you clearly still love him, too?”
Ines just blinks at Kat, like her brain can’t possibly comprehend what her friend is saying. She doesn’t even get the chance to argue because her alarm goes off.
“You have a court hearing, but don’t think justice will stop us from talking about this later,” Kat says sternly.
In the court room, Ines sits between her lawyer and Kat. Her brain feels too fried to keep up with the basics the judge opens up with.
“Now it says the couple was wed on September 14th of this year. Just a few days before the official report was filed about Ms. Ruiz’ status. You’ll understand why this seems a little convenient.”
“Yes, your honor,” Sierra stands up holding a file, “but the couple was engaged before any officially filings were made. And you can see in the documents we have a receipt from when Mr. Keller bought the engagement ring back in March of this year. If you need to see Ms. Ruiz’ ring for confirmation she can approach the bench.”
“That won’t be necessary. Seeing as all the applications are going through the appropriate channels, I see no reason to hold Ms. Ruiz in custody while she waits for her green card interview.”
The gavel bang echoes in Ines’ head, but the judge is already moving on to the next case. Sierra and Kat help lead her out of the courtroom. They’re excitedly chattering, and Ines knows she should join in, knows this is good news, but she hasn’t quite caught up.
She sends Clayton a text: Hearing went well, won’t be going to prison, then promptly turns off her phone.
⁄⁄⁄
Ines gets two days to stew before Clayton comes home.
He picks her up and spins her around in excitement the instant he sees her. His smile falters when he sets her down and sees the borderline grim look on Ines’ face.
“You bought the ring in March?”
Clayton doesn’t know what to say, shocked by the realization.
“They brought up the receipt during the hearing, to help prove that it wasn’t just a last-minute wedding.”
Ines bites at her thumb nail, the ring catching the light. Clayton feels some relief that she hasn’t taken it off.
“You wanted to marry me before we broke up?”
“You breaking up with me kind of ruined my plans,” Clayton shrugs, not sure the direction this conversation is taking.
Ines laughs in spite herself.
“There were all those weddings you couldn’t come to and I thought you needed a chance to think without any pressure from my life, I didn’t expect it to be permanent.”
Ines audibly swallows, they’re walking around the heart of the issue, both too scared to be the first to show all their cards.
“I still got to marry you, not in the way I wanted. But I don’t regret that, no matter what you think.”
Ines moves to take off the ring, Clayton holds his breath while his heart clenches painfully.
“Ask me again.”
“What?”
Ines hands him the ring, her voice wavers a bit, “ask me again.”
He fumbles with the ring for a second before dropping down to one knee.
“I- uh don’t have anything romantic to say. But I love you Ines and I want to be with you as long as you’ll have me. So will you marry me?”
Ines lets out a small sob before covering her face, “Oh my god I can’t believe I’m a girl who cries when she gets proposed to.”
“Is that a yes? Cause otherwise this is really fucking mean.”
“Shit, sorry, yes. That’s a yes,“ she clambers to get Clayton standing again and kisses him desperately.
“I love you arcilla, I’m sorry it took me a while to realize I never stopped,” she says between kisses, not wanting to stop now.
Clayton laughs and pulls away enough to put the ring back on, “it was worth the wait.”
This time Clayton pulls her into a kiss, savoring the moment he imagined for months and months.

fun
Thanks for playing, Cupcake! ^-^
From my upcoming Stydiackson fic Back Against the Wall:
“Jacks is gonna be so mad he missed this,” Stiles gasped, arching his back. “He loves watching you fuck me. Now I feel twice as bad, like early training with Derek isn’t bad enough-” Before Stiles could continue rambling did Lydia cut him off with another kiss, much more demanding and fierce than the last, leaving Stiles moaning and desperate beneath her. It was flattering, just how strongly he reacted to her. But then he had been in love with her for like a decade. That kind of devotion? It showed. Smiling, Lydia kissed down Stiles’ throat. “Don’t worry, Jackson will have his fun later,” Lydia whispered promising.
+
“Besides,” Jackson whispered. “Why do you think Lydia plugged you? So we could have some quick fun between classes, without having to waste time on thorough prep work.” Stiles made a small noise. That did make sense and also explained the evil in Lydia’s eyes. Alas, most days, Stiles had stopped questioning the wickedness in his girlfriend’s heart. Maybe it would be safer to go back to being concerned about it, at least some times. The breath got knocked out of him when Jackson grabbed him by the thighs, pinning him against the wall and essentially carrying his entire weight. Fucking werewolf strength, why was it that hot?
--
From my upcoming Stetalion fic Their Little Red:
“Couple months ago, my best friend got bitten by an Alpha,” Stiles offered, stirring his drink. “Kinda turned our lives upside down. I kinda fell down a research rabbit hole of figuring out everything I could about werewolves, you know, like, what the fuck was happening, how to make him stop flashing his eyes at every minor inconvenience, how to stop him from hurting anyone on the full moon, these kind of fun things. And yeah, kinda, came across the club during that.”
+
“He doesn’t have an Alpha,” Stiles offered a half-shrug, taking a deep gulp of his drink. “We were out camping in the woods when he got attacked by a rogue Alpha. The Alpha ran off afterward, never saw them again. Next morning, my friend woke up naked in the middle of the woods. It was a fun camping trip for everyone. But yeah, we were left figuring this shit out on our own.”
+
Cora looked at him for a long moment, calculating, before she nodded pleased, got up and walked away. Stiles’ eyes followed her as she went to a table where a guy their age with blonde curls sat together with a guy who was a couple years older than them, dark hair and stubble. Huh. Guess he passed that test, then. Erica grinned, slapping him on the shoulder before getting up. “Yeah, you’re fun. I hope you stick around,” Erica winked before walking away.
+
“You look lovely today, darling,” Peter's voice was a low purr. Stiles loved when his voice sounded like that. It made him feel so damn appreciated and desired. In a way he'd never felt before. He'd been seeing Peter and Deucalion for about a month and a half now but neither was anything serious and he hadn't really told either that he was also spending time with someone else, they had agreed to not be exclusive. He knew alphas could be territorial and while he was still getting the hang of things, he didn't see why he should ruin two good things. He was just having fun. He was twenty-one, he was allowed to have fun, right? Two handsome alphas spending time with him, buying him drinks and paying him compliments, listening to him willingly. Quite frankly, Stiles wouldn't know how to choose between the two. Deucalion was so sophisticated, they could talk about books for hours with time just flying by and he never seemed annoyed by Stiles' ramblings. There was also something so utterly charming about the British gentlealpha. Peter on the other hand was snarky and had a wicked sense of humor that made it so much fun to gripe with him about movies and other things. On occasion, they'd even talk about Peter's cases – no details about the clients, but Stiles had quickly figured out that Peter was very weak to Stiles' big, brown eyes so a hopeful look from him could get the man talking and it was so exciting to see this side of the law.
From chapter three of Sugar for the Secretary:
“Ah,” the woman nodded with a bright smile. “Your sons are moving out at home? It is so nice to see parents who take care of their children even after they move out!” She’d started walking and the four of them were following her, but at her words, Stiles nearly belched. Sons. She thought Stiles was their son? Sure, he was aware that from a mathematical angle, age-wise, that would check out, Allison was literally his age, but damn no. And the assumption also rubbed Stiles the wrong way. He hated when people assumed things they knew nothing about. Time to have some fun. Putting on a cheerful smile, he walked ahead so he came to walk in front of her and then turned around, walking backward so he could face her and the others. “Oh, they are not my fathers,” Stiles assured her. “They’re just my sugar daddies.”

You Get Hurt on the Job (Elsbeth Tascioni x Reader)

Word Count: 1349
Genres: Angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, a bit of fluff
Warning: Violence, a bit of blood, sad Elsbeth, angst, hurt/comfort
Summary: You get injured on the job and Elsbeth blames herself for it
Today was a rather tricky situation. A murder case, and we just found out who the killer was. Me and Elsbeth were assigned to go and catch the suspect, along with Kaya and some police.
“Are you sure this is the right apartment?” I asked Elsbeth, knocking on the door once again.
“I know it is… but the apartment complex gave us a key so maybe we should use it…” Elsbeth handed me the key, and I was going to unlock the door when it suddenly swung open and I was pulled into the apartment, an arm wrapping tight around me. I felt something cold at my throat, presumably a knife.
“Back away or I’ll slit her throat!” Everyone looked nervous and backed up.
“Oh my, you don’t have to do that!” Elsbeth tried to talk him down.
“Shut up! I will kill her like I killed Sarah! Don’t test me!”
“Hmmm…” Elsbeth seemed to think for a moment. She looked terrified but determined. She got a step closer, her hands up, “I don’t think you’re gonna do that. You wanna know why?” She smiled, but I could still see fear in her eyes. I felt terrified, myself. What was she doing???
“I’m warning you, back away! I’m not lying!”
“You were supposed to ask why, silly. Anyways, when you killed Sarah, you had a motive. You found out that your girlfriend of 3 years had been cheating on you, and you just couldn’t let her get away with it. But you don’t have any motive or reason to kill ___, and you don’t seem like the type to kill someone you think doesn’t deserve it.” Elsbeth got yet another step closer.
“I said shut up! I mean it!” The knife started to dig into my throat, drawing a little blood. Elsbeth noticed, and backed away, her eyes wide.
I decided to speak up, “Please, just turn yourself in. You’re not getting away even if you do kill me.”
“We’ll see about that.” Suddenly the knife left my throat and I felt the cold metal stab into my side, and the next second he ran away. The cops chased him, and Elsbeth ran to my side as I keeled over.
“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. I can’t believe he did that. I didn’t think he would do that!” Elsbeth was full on panicking, her hands gripping my side trying to stop the bleeding. “Okay, don’t pull this knife out, it’s plugging the wound. If you pull it out it’s only gonna bleed out! The cops are gonna take you to the hospital.”
“I’m alright… I just feel a bit uhh woozy.” I said, my hands going to my side to stop the bleeding.
“Okay…; please stay with me. Hopefully it didn’t get anything important. Oh god, please don’t die on me.” The cops, including Kaya, came back and took me to the hospital.
I waited in the hospital bed as I was treated, and eventually after the doctors left, Elsbeth was let in as a visitor, and she immediately rushed to my side once more, sitting next to my bed in a chair.
“Are you feeling okay? Does it hurt a lot? Can I get you anything?” Her hands were gripping mine tightly as she looked at me with big, worried eyes.
“I’m okay, it didn’t hit anything vital, I just need some time to recover. But yeah, it does hurt, a lot.”
“God, I can’t believe he did that. I-I didn’t think he would actually hurt you. I was so worried about you, I… I thought you were gonna die.” Elsbeth’s eyes suddenly filled with tears, and she began to shake, “I’m so sorry, if I knew he would hurt you, I would have kept my mouth shut. Now you’re injured because of me, you almost died because of me-”
“Elsbeth, hey…” I interrupted her, “It wasn’t your fault, he was acting erratically. And besides, I’m pretty sure I was the one who pushed him over the edge.”
“Yeah, but I took him there… I.. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself.”
“There’s nothing to forgive though, Elsie. You did nothing wrong. You were just trying to talk him down. You did a good job. Come here…” I held my arm out for a hug, and I was expecting her to practically tackle me in a hug like usual, but instead her arms slowly and hesitantly wrapped around me, so gentle as if afraid she’d hurt me.
“I don’t feel like I deserve this…” Elsbeth’s voice sounded small and insecure.
“Elsbeth, you deserve the world. And more. Don’t let one tiny accident kill your self worth, okay?” I sighed before continuing, “I’m still alive, aren’t I? Maybe you did manage to talk him down, maybe if you hadn’t talked to him he would have killed me, and because you talked to him, he decided to only maim me?”
“Do you really think that?” Elsbeth asked through quiet sobs and sniffles, but was managing to calm down now.
“Yes. If he really did want to kill me, he would have probably cut my throat.”
“Okay… I’m glad you’re okay.” Elsbeth stayed hugging me for a few seconds longer, and pulled away, wiping her eyes. “I promise I’m going to do my best to make sure this doesn’t happen again. I hate seeing you hurt like this.”
“Don’t worry, I probably won’t be getting injured again for a while, I’m pretty good about that usually.”
“Alright… I’m gonna go get some water, if you need anything.” She got up.
“I’d like some of my favorite snack actually, if it’s not too expensive.”
“Alright. I’ll be right back with that! And I’ll try to be back to my normal cheery self as soon as possible!” Elsbeth forced a smile and walked out. She came back a couple of minutes with her water and my snack.
“Thank youuuu…” I grabbed my snack and began to eat it, thankful that I was still alive to have it. I looked back up at Elsbeth, giving her a warm smile, “You know, I love you. A lot. I think you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Oh, I love you too. So much. I don’t know what I’d do if.. if I lost you..” Her eyes got teary again, “Gah, sorry, I’m getting all emotional again. I swear I’ll try to be back to normal, I’m just feeling all, well I don’t know, right now!”
“Ahh, it’s alright. You should get yourself a snack, too. Might help pick you up.” I suggested.
“Oh I would, but I actually used the last of my cash on that snack, and the vending machine doesn’t take cards…”
“We can share my snack then if you’d like.” I held out the bag of food.
“Are you sure? You must be so hungry right now!”
“I actually ate a pretty big meal before work today, so it’s alright!”
“If you insist… I am actually feeling a bit peckish.” Elsbeth reached her hand into the bag, carefully taking one of the snacks out, and eating it. A small smile graced her face, and her eyes lit up slightly, “Wow, this is good! Thank you so much!”
“You can have more if you want!” I shook the bag.
“Alright, but only a few more…” She grabbed 3 more snacks from the bag and ate them.
“How about this, when we get home we can watch your favorite show and curl up on the couch. Does that sound good?” I offered.
“That sounds amazing, but wouldn’t it be more appropriate if we watched your favorite show? You’re the one who got stabbed. I just got a little emotional.” Elsbeth said, chuckling.
“Hmmm honestly that sounds nice. I can’t wait!” “Just get some rest for now, alright? I want you to be in tip top shape!” She patted my cheek, and I grinned, laughing quietly.
Eventually I was discharged, and Elsbeth and I went back to my apartment to watch my favorite show, enjoying every moment of each others’ company.

Tickletober Day 6: Cuddles
FNAF SB - Freddy rescues Roxy from the Pizzaplex and makes her feel beautiful again. (switch!Glamrock Freddy, switch!Roxy, lee!Gregory)
...
Freddy had insisted on going back for her. Gregory didn't like it one bit, and was still scared of her, but he let Freddy go.
He'd worked on curing the virus that had infected everyone. None of the animatronics were supposed to harm any humans! It had taken about a month, but Freddy managed to isolate the virus and get rid of it when testing on an old computer.
Having gone into the pizzaplex, he started his rescue mission. Guiding her with his voice, Freddy managed to (mostly) calm Roxy and led her home. She still softly sobbed and didn't meet his gaze with her empty eye sockets. When they got to the car, Freddy decided to try his antivirus there. It was far enough from home that Gregory wouldn't get hurt if something went wrong.
Telling her that he'd soon have her fixed and she'd be as good as new, Freddy applied the antivirus. The virus tried to fight back, making Roxy spazz and glitch for a few moments. Then she relaxed, the virus now gone.
"Freddy...? What am I doing here?" She asked. He smiled, glad she was back.
"You were infected with a virus... I cured it!"
"I'm blind... Was the virus doing that too...?" She wondered. He looked away in shame.
"No. But I can fix you! Come home with me and I'll repair you."
So they drove back to Freddy and Gregory's house. Roxy seemed a little nervous. In the moments they spent in the car, she remembered everything.
"That kid's gonna be there, isn't he??"
Freddy winced. "I'll talk to him. Since the virus is gone, I know you won't try to harm him. Perhaps, we can all be friends...?"
She growled. "Fat chance."
...
In the garage, Freddy repaired Roxy. He was a skilled mechanic. Memorizing all the parts of the Glamrock animatronics in case something went wrong. Roxy was fairly easy to fix. He gave back her eyes, which had been taken from her and given to him, and put back his old ones. They couldn't see through walls, but they were his.
Afterwards, he showed her what she looked like. She seemed satisfied, but pointed out that her makeup had gotten ruined.
"Want me to fix it?" Freddy asked. She nodded. He looked around for some suitable paint. After a while, he came back with a black bucket of paint. "I'm sorry, I only have this."
"It's alright. I'd like to try it!" She said.
So Freddy applied a couple coats of paint to her eyelashes and eyelids. When he finished, he stood back, astounded.
"Does it look good...?" Roxy wondered, and grabbed the mirror. "Ohhh yeah!!" She did the love sign with her paws and did a 'rockstar' grin.
Smiling, Freddy said, "I am glad you like it!"
Roxy pulled him into a hug. "Thank you. I-I'm beautiful again!"
He hugged back. "You are beautiful to me no matter what."
She hummed and then looked up into his eyes. And they shared a kiss.
...
When they came upstairs, Gregory screeched.
"What is she doing here?!"
"Come now, Gregory. I fixed her up so she isn't dangerous anymore!"
She growled and ran up to him. "But I'm still getting my revenge!" Scooping him up, she tickle-attacked his armpits, ribs, and stomach.
"EEEEEE!! HEEHEHEHEHEHEEEEEE!! NOHOHOOOHOOOOO!!" he cried, squirming and wiggling away. Freddy came over and scooped them both up into a hug.
"I've got both of you!" he said, joining in, getting his sides.
"EEEEEEEEK! FREDDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!" Gregory screeched. Finally, it looked like he'd had enough so they let up. As soon as Gregory was set down, he ran off.
Roxy chuckled. "Kids."
"He'll get used to you, I promise." Freddy said warmly. And he looked upstairs, deciding to give her a tour of the house. "There is a bed in my room, would you like to cuddle...?"
She nodded. "That's one of those human things, isn't it? Sounds fun."
They snuggled close to one another.
"Are you comfortable...?" Freddy asked. She hummed happily. "I am glad..."
"By the way, it's your turn." Roxy said. And she tickled his armpits.
"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!! NOHOHOT THERE!!" He laughed, trying not to wiggle too much. Freddy hadn't been programmed to be ticklish in a lot of spots, but he was still sensitive in a few common places.
"Oh? Then how about here...?" Roxy wondered, digging into his hips.
"HAHAHHHHAAHAAAHAHAHAAAHAAAAA!!" He shook his head, cheeks heating up.
"Or how about here...?" She went over to his feet and dragged her nails along his arches.
"HAHAAAHAHAHAHAAAAHAHAAHAHAAAAA!!" Freddy howled. "HAAAHHAHAHAHHAAAA! PLEASE!! ROXY STOHOHOHOOOP!"
She stopped and grinned at him. Gasping for breath, Freddy eyed her curiously.
"How did you know my worst spots...?"
Cheekily, she waved his manual in his face.
"Okay, that's it!" Picking her up, he set her on the bed and tickled under her chin and on her exposed midriff.
"EEEHEEHEEHEHEHEHEHEEEHEEEEE!!" She screeched and squirmed around on the bed, not holding back. "FREDDYYYYYYY!! HEEHEHEHEHEEEEE!"
"Or how about here...?" he said, mimicking her and squeezing her hips. She cackled, rolling over. He chuckled and went for her knee pits. "Or here...?"
"YEEEEHEEHEHEEHHEHEHEEE!!" She squealed. "EEEHEEHEHEEEEEHEEEE!! ALRIGHIHIHIHHIHT! I GIVE!"
Truth be told, she could last longer but thought it best to stop the session here.
Freddy pulled away and smiled lovingly at her.
Laying down, they both decided it time to power down and recharge. Roxy cuddled up to Freddy and pulled the blanket over them.
"I missed you, Freddy." She said before falling asleep.
Stroking her hair, he mumbled, "I missed you too, Roxanne."

Main Masterlist
____
Steve was running late again. You try not to chew your nails off in frustration but he’s definitely testing you. This is the third time in the last two weeks that he’s late to meet you. When he hasn’t been late he’s cancelled all together. Always with a half-ass apology of ‘Bucky needs me. As if.
You’ve been friends with Steve since your freshman year creative writing class when the only open seat was next to him. Ever since that first day you two had been close. But not as close as him and Bucky. Childhood friends attending university together, thicker than thieves.
You always felt like Bucky was maybe a little jealous of the friendship you and Steve have. Maybe you’re a little jealous too but you’re almost positive Bucky is more jealous of you than you are of him but that’s beside the point. On top of his jealousy Bucky was just annoying. He had a girlfriend but he was always flirting with every girl he met, yourself included. Not to mention he was cocky as all hell.
Steve vouches for his character, swears that it’s all an act and he’s actually very sensitive underneath but you don’t buy it for a second. If you were his girlfriend you’d have dumped him a long time ago.
You don’t have time to dwell on your annoyance too much because Steve is rushing through the doors of the coffee shop. He looks around for you and when he finally finds you the look on his face is relieved. As he gets closer it’s clear that he’d been running to get to you in time. He’s sweaty and a little out of breath and if you weren’t so annoyed with him you’d have found it endearing that he ran here.
“There you are,” he huffs out, “I’m so sorry, I was with Bucky and I lost track of time.”
You purse your lips and hand him a napkin which he takes with a gracious nod before wiping the sweat from his brow. You hand him the iced coffee you’d ordered for him too. The ice is slightly melted from sitting there but he looks so refreshed to be drinking it.
“Figures” is all you say with a huff. If he hadn’t been doing it so often you would’ve been a little kinder about it but you were just irked.
“Seriously, I’m sorry. Nat just dumped him, he's been having a hard time” Steve explained.
“Is it because he flirts with anything that moves?” You scoff.
Steve scoffs in return “He does not! He’s just… outgoing. But no, they had their own problems.” You raise one eyebrow at him. “Okay the flirting had something to do with it but there’s a lot going on there.”
“Whatever, let’s just study for this exam while we can”.
____
You and Steve spent the next two hours cramming for your midterm together. Things were going well and you’d nearly forgotten that you were mad at Steve in the first place. Nearly.
You were so deep into your notecards that you didn’t hear the door open behind you. A voice that could grate on only your nerves. A voice that if it didn’t belong to such a bastard, might even be kinda sexy. The voice breaks your focus completely when it calls out.
“Hey, Steve, are you done already or what? Oh hey, what’s up, beautiful?”
You set your notecards down on the table maybe a little harder than you should. You shoot Steve a glare because you thought it would just be the two of you. Really? You cut in before Steve can answer his friend.
“No, Bucky, he’s not. Can we help you?”
He smirks, giving you his full attention. He knows he has you now, knows you took the bait and he’s goaded you to the point of backtalk. He pulls up a chair to the table and wedges himself tightly between you and Steve. The sound of the chair legs scraping the floor as he scoots closer to you rings in your ears and makes you cringe. You look at Steve again only to find him avoiding your gaze.
“Well, sweetheart, me and Stevie boy here have plans later. Gonna do some gaming and order a pizza, really embracing the bachelor lifestyle.” He raised his eyebrows at this and you just rolled your eyes.
“Yeah, I heard Nat dumped your ass, actually, is that true?” You asked with a fake sweetness.
“Why, you interested?” He rebuffed.
You bristled at his quick response and muttered your annoyance under your breath. You chose not to respond. Instead you decided to address Steve.
“Steve, I didn’t realize that you had plans”
“Oh… yeah, loose plans…” He answered distractedly while pretending to be reading a text on his phone.
You decide to call it a day. You were getting seriously fed up with Steve’s passive behavior in all of this. Thankfully you didn’t have much to pack up, so once you slung your backpack over your shoulder you looked up at the pair to bid them goodnight.
“Well, Steve, this was… enlightening. Bucky, eat it. Goodnight fellas, have fun with your ‘bachelor lifestyle’” You said with air quotes. Turning on your heel you left before either could respond.
____
You had left the coffee shop that evening pretty upset with Steve. Of course it’s fine for him to have other friends but lately it was like he only cared about Bucky and all of your plans took a backseat to theirs. You decided you weren’t going to be the one to text Steve first, since he was being a bad friend. He could be the one to initiate plans.
He did just that when he caught you in the hallway after your midterm a week later. He jogged up to you once again and tugged on your sleeve to get you to stop.
“Hey, how do you think you did? Bet those notecards paid off, right?” He half-joked. He looked sheepish. Nervous almost. You figured it was because of what happened last time you met.
“Yeah, Jesus Christ! I’ve never been so grateful for little pieces of paper.” You scoffed. You decided to keep it light between you. You were still upset with him but his tone leads you to believe he was gonna apologize.
“Right?” He laughs nervously, “So listen, I know I’ve been kind of a jerk lately… Maybe we could get something to eat at Nick’s?”
Nick’s was the local greasy spoon on campus and they had the best breakfast food you’d ever had. You eyed him suspiciously but accepted.
“Alright, but you’re buying. And there better not be any visitors!” You add as you bound down the hall ahead of him. He knows you mean Bucky and he’s not worried because Bucky won’t be showing up today. He’s more nervous about what he has to ask you.
____
You’re sipping on pop as you play with your straw wrapper. You look up at Steve and notice he’s fidgeting a lot more than usual.
“What’s up? Why are you so twitchy?” You question him.
“Me? I’m not twitchy! I was just thinking that’s all” He quickly defends himself.
“Well that was the last midterm of the semester for both of us, I think it’s safe to say you can relax.”
“Yeah, guess you’re right.” Steve concedes quietly.
You and Steve eat in near silence, neither of you mind though because it’s comfortable. You worked on your hashbrowns when you looked up and noticed that Steve had barely touched his food. He was still fidgety, he looked nervous.
“Hey, you’ve hardly eaten anything, what’s the matter?”
He looks a little embarrassed, like he’s been caught. Or like he’s about to come clean about something.
“Look, I wanted to say sorry I know I haven’t been the best friend lately with everything going on with Bucky. He really is having a hard time since the breakup y’know… he’s lonely”
“Right” You laughed, “I’m sure he’s soo lonely.” You rolled your eyes and picked up your fork.
“No really, he just needed a friend to be there. I think he does need to get back out there though.”
“With how smooth he thinks he is, I'm sure he’ll have a date by the end of the night. I wouldn’t worry about it, Stevie.” You responded.
“I’m serious! As much of a player as he comes off he needs to be with someone he already knows. He’s actually really sensitive.” You interrupted with another laugh. There were many choice words you’d use to describe Bucky Barnes but ‘sensitive’ is not one of them.
“But anyway, I was...kinda hoping you’d do me a favor…” Steve trails off.
Based on the conversation you just had you’re cautious. You eye him warily but motion for him to continue.
“Well, like I said Buck’s having a hard time and he needs to get back out there but he doesn’t feel comfortable hooking up with a stranger. I was thinking maybe.. You guys should hang out?”
Steve refused to look at you as he finished the question. The look on your face was a look of confusion and shock.
“Fuck me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like Mother Theresa?” you asked in disbelief. “I mean seriously, I’m nice but not that nice.”
“Look-”
“No!” You cut him off, “You know I can’t stand that prick. Also why would I want to put myself on the long list of women he’s probably tried to fuck? I don’t buy this whole ‘sensitive’ thing for a minute.”
“I’m serious, Nat kinda crushed his heart when she left. He acts cocky but it’s a front. I just think he needs to see someone to get it out of his system. You’ve got more in common than you think. Just hang out with him once. Don’t think of it like a date, just a really really big favor. Please?” Steve begged.
You pinched the bridge of your nose and sighed. “You. Owe. Me. So. Much”
“Really?” He asked hopefully.
“Really. But I’m not gonna bang him. Hard no on that” you said.
“Yeah, yeah of course! No problem! I’ll give Bucky your number!” He reached across the table and grabbed your hand. His hands were kidna clammy but you let him.
“Seriously, thank you. I know you think he’s some jerk but I promise he’s a good guy.” Steve adds, “A-and don’t think of it as like a date, even, y'know? I think honestly he could just use another friend. Think of how good it could be if we could all hang together some time?”
You shook your head and chuckled at his optimism while you stabbed another bite of your meal.
____
‘What’s up, sweetface?’ Gross.
‘Okay, sorry. Hi, how are you?’ Better.
‘I’m alright, you?’
‘Good. Steve tells me you’re a huge trivia nerd. Wanna go to Sally’s tn?’
‘It’s a date’ Shit. Didn’t mean to say that. Fuck. Quick- say something that will deflect before he responds!
‘And since it’s a date you’re paying’ That’ll have to do.
‘Ugh fine. Here’s hoping you’re a cheap date at least. I’ll meet you there at 9’
____
What do you wear for a date with someone that you despise? It’s just bar trivia so it’s nothing special but somehow the jeans and flannel you’ve been wearing all day don’t feel like they make the cut. You rip your closet apart trying to find something before you settle on black skinny jeans and your favorite sweater with some boots. Casual but not too casual.
You spend the whole walk there dreading the night ahead of you. Knowing that you wouldn’t even have Steve as a buffer between you made the whole evening seem daunting. At least you had trivia to distract you. You decide to give Bucky the benefit of the doubt tonight for Steve’s sake. You try to remember Steve’s insistence that Bucky’s a good guy and you have a lot in common. We’ll see about that.
When you arrive at the bar you find Bucky already waiting for you at a high-top table with two PBRs and a shot of brown liquid. Please don’t let that be whiskey. He sees you coming and smiles that damn-his-good-looks smile at you while patting the open chair next to him. The closer you get you even see that he got the whiteboard already for trivia.
“Please tell me that’s not Jameson or Fireball” you greet him.
He laughs a little and shakes his head. “Better - it’s Jack. Sorry, doll, but I already opened the tab. This is what we’re drinking” He nudges one of the shots closer to you and motions for you to pick it up. “Come on, we gotta start the night off right, bottoms up!”
Before you can gag at the thought of drinking whiskey you grab the glass and face him. You both knock your shots on the table before clinking them together and swallowing them in one go. You grimace at the taste and feel the warmth flow all the way down your throat. You quickly take a sip of your beer to rid yourself of the taste.
“Aww, you’re cute when you’re grossed out.” Bucky coos at you.
You’re embarrassed and annoyed but it goes away quickly.
“Shut up, Barnes”
You give him a light shove and he pretends like he’s about to fall off his stool, making you laugh. For someone that’s only ever annoyed you he’s doing a pretty bang-up job of being likeable when it’s just the two of you.
“You ready for me to carry you through some trivia?” You joked.
“Hey, now! I know...stuff” he concluded.
“Mmhmmm, I’m sure you do. Don’t worry, I’ll answer the questions and you just sit there and look pretty” you reach over to pat his face lightly with a wink.
Bucky grumbles before taking another sip of his beer.
You settle in for a long night when the host announces the first round is starting.
____
You managed to steal the first round without breaking a sweat, second round was a little rocky until it came down to you and one other couple. You knew the third round would be tricky but the way Bucky was cheering you on you were determined. To no one’s surprise Bucky had been completely useless so far but to his credit he was trying. At least he was a supportive teammate.
Things were going well until the third round was announced: Old School Videogames. You didn’t know shit about old school videogames. Or regular videogames. The extent of your video game knowledge started and ended with Mario Kart.
When the third round was announced though Bucky hit the table in excitement and cheered.
“Woo! Fuck yeah!” He pats you on the shoulder, “I got this, don’t worry. I so fuckin’ got this!”
He was a few drinks deep but he was so confident and he was your only hope so you went with it. He looked like a little kid the way he was practically giddy.
“You had better! There’s some serious prize money riding on this round.” You said in warning.
“No, no. You don’t understand that I’ve GOT this. Your turn to look pretty, not that it’s gonna be all that hard for you, sweetface” Bucky grinned at you over his beer as he took another sip.
Your cheeks felt heated and you tried your best to hide it by taking another drink yourself. Bucky’s flirting has never worked until now. Must be the alcohol.
“Shut up, Barnes” you mumble.
“Y’keep saying that but what I really think you mean is ‘I love you, Bucky you’re so strong and handsome~’” He imitated in a high pitched feminine voice.
You shoved him for real and before you could say anything else the third round was starting.
____
Bucky wasn’t kidding when he said he had this. He had won the round in a clean sweep and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t impressed. Who knew this man harbored so much videogame trivia? When the host handed you the prize money he just waggled his eyebrows as if to say See?
“I gotta hand it to you, Barnes, I had no idea you had that much videgame wisdom rolling around up there. The only videogame I ever play is Mariokart so I’d be toast without you.”
“Mariokart? That’s it?? No problem, doll. It was nice to contribute.” He chuckles at that.
You divvied the money up and handed him his half.
“Guess I’m not such a cheap date afterall, huh?”
He chuckled as he took his half from you.
“I’m gonna go pay the tab with our winnings, I’ll be back”
You picked up your phone while you waited for him to find some missed texts from Steve.
‘How’s it going?’ ‘Are you guys doing okay?’ ‘I haven’t heard anything so I’m assuming you haven’t killed each other. Have fun, text if you need a ride home.’
You almost rolled your eyes at Steve’s insistence but found yourself smiling instead. You’d text him back when you got home.
Bucky was walking up to you once more and you smiled at him slightly.
“You said you’re good at Mariokart?”
“I didn’t say I was good at Mariokart, I said that I played it. Why?”
“Well I was thinkin’ maybe we could go back to mine and I could whoop your butt”
You weren’t going to say yes but now he was goading you and you took the bait without hesitation.
“Oh, you’re on, Barnes. You’re so, so on.”
His smile grew wider when he heard your response. With that he placed his hand on your lower back and ushered you out of the bar.
____
You played two tournament cups worth of Mariokart and Bucky had indeed whooped your butt. You don’t know why you were surprised, with how much gaming he and Steve do it’s no surprise he’s a natural. You still had fun though. Just when you were about to propose a third round Bucky got up and headed to the kitchen without a word.
He came back with two glasses of water and handed you one. He sat down on the floor next to you and you set down your controller.
“Here, drink up.”
You were taken aback a bit by the kind gesture but accepted the glass just the same.
“Thank you, I might regret saying this but, you’re not so bad when you’re not being insufferable, Barnes”. You told him
He smiled and shook his head as he drank his water.
“Thanks, I guess”
“How come you can’t be like this all the time? When it’s just the two of us you’re so kind and you’re even… I don’t know, funny maybe. Why do you get all cocky whenever else I see you?”
He looked down into his glass at your comment and you watched his brows crease in thought.
“I don’t know, it just sort of… happens, whenever I’m around other people I don’t know that well. I don’t mean to be a dick or anything but it’s like I can’t help myself. People expect me to be a certain way and I can’t help but fall into it sometimes. Nat hated that about me, it’s part of the reason why she dumped me, actually”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know that. And I’m sorry about the breakup, too. I know you guys were together for a while.” Bucky only shrugged at this and downed the rest of his water.
“It is what it is. I’m ready to be over it, I’m getting there slowly but surely. I gotta say, you’re not so bad either when you’re not getting all defensive and in my face. You’re actually pretty funny”
Your turn to become flustered at a personal analysis.
“Thanks, I guess I don’t mean to be so defensive either, it's just my response to most other people. I feel myself slip into it and it can’t be helped.” You explained.
Bucky nods at you, not knowing entirely what to say in response.
“I like spending time with you” He says leaning closer to you.
You swallow thickly, not sure what to make of what you feel knowing his face is so close to yours.
“I… like spending time with you too. You’re not what I thought.”
“Me neither,” he shakes his head, “You’re something else.”
With that he leans his head closer to yours and you feel yourself close your eyes and move your lips to slant perfectly into his. You’re kissing Bucky Barnes. The Bucky Barnes you can’t stand. That Bucky Barnes. You’ve decided that his tongue feels too good in your mouth to care now.
His hands come to frame your face and bring you in closer. His hands are warm and calloused but they feel like comfort. You can’t help but to melt. You moan into his mouth and it seems to spur him on. He pulls you into his lap and you let out a noise of surprise that’s muffled by his mouth on yours.
Your hands come to caress his sides and you take your time feeling every muscle and ridge. Your hands idly make their way under the hem of his shirt and his skin is just as smooth as you’d expect. He sighs into your mouth and it takes all of your strength not to fall apart right there. You feel yourself getting lightheaded and have to pull away for air. When you do you rest your forehead against his and the only sound is both of your breathing.
You finally brave a look at him and he has the softest smile on his lips.
“Sorry, doll, didn’t mean to get so carried away but I’ve been waiting for a long time to do that.”
This catches you off guard.
“You have? Wait, did you like me? But you flirt with everyone!” You explain.
“With you, I flirt with you. You just can’t stand me” he laughs out, “Nat dumped me for a couple reasons but that’s one of them she told me I needed to get my priorities straight and I gotta say, I’m thankin’ her for sayin’ it ‘cause she was right.”
You don’t know what to say or what to make of any of this. All you know is that you want to kiss him again, so you do. You grab him by the collar and pull him into you again. He lets out a startled noise but kisses you back all the same.
You don’t care what you used to think of Bucky Barnes and you don’t care about what’ll happen after today. Right now all you care about is feeling him in sync with you for the first time. You could live in this moment forever but right now will have to do.

Birthday
Pairings: The Avengers x reader
Summary:
It’s your birthday and the team gets creative on how to surprise you, putting their acting skills to the test.
Word count: 2,350
A/n: just a little something because,, well,, it’s my birthday *runs away* also it’s cheesy, hopefully it makes sense lmao
Warnings: uhhh brief mention of explosion? mostly fluff
The Avengers wanted to get creative for your birthday this year. For the few years they've known you they picked up on things about you. One, you paid no mind to your birthday at all and just considered it a normal day like the rest of the 365, Tony took note that you hated parties, at least the really big ones, something that involved only the team would be good.
Okay, you sound like a party pooper, but that isn't the case; it's not a crime to just... not want to have a grand celebration, right? And people singing the 'happy birthday' song to you too while you just sit there in silence. It's awkward, you once told Natasha. It’s also awkward and hard for you to receive presents even though that’s what birthdays are all about, you’re still getting used to it since you knew someone like Tony Stark.
Well, the team think you're an amazing friend and they all treat you like family. They're so glad they met someone like you.
You're immediately called to the conference room on that day. Only to find the team arguing and pointing fingers at one another.
You kinda just slot in, sitting on the chair you usually sit on whenever there's a meeting or mission briefing. Glancing around, you try and find out what they're fighting about.
Security. Suits. Brief mention of Ultron. Rhodey busying himself with phones, probably making a lot of calls. Natasha and Clint talking among themselves, only raising their voice whenever they're included in the conversation which mainly consisted of Tony and Steve arguing.
"Suit up, get the jet ready." Steve dismisses but before he could walk out himself you raise your hand.
"Hey, sorry, I just woke up," you say sheepishly but coolly at the same time. "What happened, is everyone supposed to go? Can I read the file?" Because if this is an Avengers-level threat that required everyone, you'd want to know all about it.
His sharp and expression softens slightly when he looks at you. "No file, I'm afraid. Some of the compound's security protocols have been compromised, someone hacked in." He proceeds to tell you how they particularly had interest in Bruce and Tony's lab so the other rooms were untouched.
Apparently, they took blueprints and materials, maybe a handful of Tony's suits.
But if you think about it, those two carelessly letting the security to their lab loose? Highly unlikely...
You push the thought to the back of your mind and nod when Steve tells you to get ready. Stark tech can be dangerous in the wrong hands, after all. Let alone the Iron Man suits.
Fortunately, those things have trackers. Leaving you to wonder again why those idiots don't even try and take them off so they won't tracked?
Sat on the floor of the jet while everyone was strangely quiet but once again you didn't pay any mind, you sharpen a few of your knives. Natasha sat on a stool near you, idly picking her nails. An hour into the flight you furrow your brows and look around.
"Are you guys okay?"
"Yes," Tony states quickly and a matter-of-factly. They all share glances before he continued. "It's the tension. Sorry. My fault."
"It's not your fault, Tony," Bruce starts.
"I'm sorry, to whom were those stolen suits again?" Steve speaks up as well and you could tell it's gonna be a full blown argument again.
"Now hold on just a second-" Tony faces the super soldier to counter.
You merely blink, not expecting a simple question to turn out like this. Clint just glances from the pilot's seat and Natasha almost cracks a smile by the look of your face. If only you knew it was all fake, all planned. But what does she know? You're a spy too, maybe you've figured out what they're up to and decided to play along.
Sad to say you're still oblivious. Maybe the fact that you only slept three hours last night is one case. You wanted nothing more than your bed right now.
Heck, not one of them wished you a happy birthday but you didn't notice at all.
Tuning out their bickering you sit down next to Natasha who's the only one not in the argument.
"I haven't seen Wanda all day," you say and she turns her head to face you. "Or Sam, or Bucky."
"Probably not back from their mission." Natasha answers promptly.
You frown at that. "Steve made this sound like an Avengers-level threat, and it is, shouldn't they be here?"
You don't wait for a response, opening up a globe-shaped hologram that shows where the jet, represented by a blinking dot. Your eyes slightly widen when you see the target location which is one of the places you've been dying to visit your whole life.
Maybe it's just a coincidence. You definitely didn't expect to visit it for the first time on a mission though.
Natasha clears her throat. "Hey, have you read the book I gave you?" She subtly closes the globe up when she catches your attention.
You shake your head bashfully. "You know I'm a slow reader. Give me two months then I'll come back to you." You laugh. Natasha smiles and tells you to take your time. "Have you read the book I gave you?"
"I loved it."
"I knew you would!" You say excitedly and the next few moments you discuss about the specific book. She's just glad you didn't ask any further questions about the location.
--
All of you split up once you reach the base but Rhodey and Bruce stay in the jet as backup. The place reminded you so much of the old Avengers tower, only with darker themes. You're paired with Clint who you follow to the side of the building, with surprisingly no cautiousness. He just... ran in, entrance deserted of guards.
You all had a digital, tech checklist to see what was stolen including all the suit names. So far you've searched two drawers now and still no sign of any agent or guard. But it's weird since the others are clearly doing their part on their floors. Thuds, footsteps and sometimes banging sounds could be heard all around.
“Finally," you mutter when you hear footsteps behind you, spinning around so suddenly to surprise your enemy and take him down with ease. You raise an eyebrow when they don't put up a fight at all.
Clint was in front of a computer when you peek in to one of the rooms but he waves you off. "I'll meet you on the next floor. This'll take a second."
"One suit on the roof!" you hear Steve grunt through your earpiece.
"Remember to remove the arc reactor, that'll shut them down for sure." Bruce reminds through everyone's comms.
You hear Tony let out a noise. "Might have a problem with that, Banner, they're all reprogrammed."
Expecting the man with seven Ph. D's to worry, it only took him a minute to respond back. "It's your tech. I don't believe they could do that completely especially having them for only twelve hours."
"In that case," Tony sighs. "There should be a kill switch under one of their reactors."
"Which one?" Natasha grunts.
The deafening silence from Tony's line explains it.
You fight your way though the thugs which again, don't put up a fight. Sometimes you throw one punch and they're out cold, leading you to believe the intense training Bucky insisted you do worked. The only tough ones were the Iron Man suits themselves.
Ripping out the arc reactors wasn't easy. You had to use all you force. On the second one you encounter it got the upper hand and blasts you through a wall, the impact sending sharp pain to your head and back.
You hear metal thumping of a suit so you get back up and attempt to get your hands on the Iron Man in front of you.
"Hey, hey. Same team. Look," Tony grips on your wrists and lifts his mask up. "You alright?"
“Yeah," you pant, relaxing a bit. "Yeah. One of them got m-"
"We just discovered a bomb, northwest," Clint says. By ‘we’ he means him and Natasha. The redhead speaks right after. “Two and a half minutes. How many suits left, Friday?”
"Only one more suit is fully functional."
You get out of Tony's hold and sprint up the stairs. "I got it."
He smiles to himself. The plan is all coming to place.
As soon as you enter the room you dodge a blast from the much bulkier Mark XVI. Of course they'd want to make the stealth suit more powerful. You launch yourself towards it, stomping on an arm while trying to dodge blasts from the the other one.
"Y/N! Fifty seconds!" Steve shouts in your earpiece.
You could've just jumped out, leaving the compromised suits here to be blown up but being under pressure made you panic and set your only goal to find the switch.
The suit could still set off a blast from the arc reactor so you couldn't really get your hands on it without losing a freaking arm.
"Get out of there!”
But you didn’t have enough time. So you just curl into a ball against the wall, accepting your fate.
A pop did go off. Loud, but you didn't feel yourself torn into pieces right after. You also heard a bunch of aye’s and oh’s. Redwing whirs by to your head to drop off a birthday hat.
"Happy Birthday!”
Your eyes fly open. Turns out the only thing inside Mark XVI was confetti. Natasha walks over to you to inspect and make sure you're alright.
"What the hell?" Your eyes widen at her, then at everyone. Sam and Bucky were now standing with them, smiling at you amused.
"I think she's in shock.”
“You think?”
Steve glares at Tony with a hint of amusement. "I told you it would be too much."
"Trust me she prefers something like this instead of a big party. Don't you, Y/N?"
"What do you mean?" You take off the hat and clutch it between your hands, appreciating Natasha rubbing your back as you try to collect yourself. "How is none of this real?"
"We basically faked a mission for you." Rhodey says.
You look around all the rubble. "This building, the people, suits-"
"Bought the place," Tony states. "Hired stuntmen, did a few tweaks on the suits...”
"God, why would you do that?" You bury your face in your hands, not knowing if you should be laughing or crying. "I punched those guys!"
"They'll be fine, they signed up for it."
You gently get up and brush off some confetti off your knees.
"But back at the compound... you guys were yelling at each other and during the whole thing you all sounded serious," you point out. "Was that all part of the act?"
Especially when that 'bomb' was about to go off. Steve's panicked voice made you scared for your life, only to know that it was all fake.
They all show signs of agreement, laughing.
"We'd make such great actors." Natasha smirks.
"Alright, the cake isn't going to blow itself." Clint walks up to you with said cake and you meet him halfway.
Everyone gathers around and before they could inhale to sing the stupid song, you cut them off. "You all know I hate to be sung at. Can we just get this over with?"
They all burst out laughing, you giggle in the process, blowing out your candle. You all group hug right after. The laughter makes you miss the sound of faint thunder outside.
"Look who's late." Bruce points out.
"Yes, I got here as soon as I can, my apologies." Thor smiles sheepishly.
Your ears perk up at the all too familiar voice of the god of thunder. Moving everyone of the way, you leap to hug him. "Thor!"
"Happy birthday, dearest Y/N." He grins and pats you on the head. "I'm afraid my - I mean - our gift, is with Loki at the moment."
"Enough with the formality, I’m just glad you’re here.”
Peter rings up Tony to tell him everything's set up at the huge building they rented for your low-key party. Just the Avengers. Peter, Vision and Wanda were in charge of setting things up over there, from decorations and food. Sam and Bucky also helped a bit before they arrived at the fake base.
So you all get into the jet again, this time you look at the windows in awe to see what the city's like. You also asked a bunch of questions on how they pulled something stupid but unique fake mission like that.
Once you've reached your destination, the place was simple yet big enough to fit everyone. Tony really took notes for this year. You didn't like anything too fancy or elegant, and you didn't like huge-ass parties with hundreds of people you've never met before.
Here you're with your family eating, drinking booze and playing games, generally having a good time.
You give the other five Avengers big hugs. Vision's never usually a hugger but for you he made an exception just for today. Everyone was surprised when he lifted you off your feet and spun you around.
"Hugging has a lot of good benefits," Vision says when he lets you go. "Astounding, I know. It is recommended eight times a day, hopefully you've already gotten that much."
You giggle at his remark and Wanda rolls her eyes playfully. “Thank you, Vision.”
“Splendid, that means I don’t have to give you one.”
You turn around to see the god of mischief himself carefully hand you a wrapped box. Loki chuckles when you smile at him. “Happiest Birthday.”
“Loki.... you know you and Thor didn’t have to-”
“Thor? That one’s from me. I assure you.”
“Y/N!” You hear Tony call from the other side of the room. “It’s time for presents, little miss. Good lord this looks like Christmas morning.”

Unexpected - Stucky x Reader
Pairing Grouping: Steve Rogers x Reader x Bucky Barnes
Warnings: Steamy fluff with a dash cupful of foul mouthed Reader and super soldier. Also liberal use of sugar and baby but no sugar babies.
A/N: short fluff is no 3300+ of very steamy fluff. I’m gonna go with 16+ on this one folks. Oh, and STUCKY!!!
***
They didn’t think anything of it at first. It was just little things after all. Things that hardly warranted their attention. It wasn’t until Tony mentioned it that they began to take notice.
“Hey, Capsicle, you and tin man been sneaking off to the store without telling anyone? You could at least ask if we needed anything? I’ve been out of blueberries for days,” Tony said one night as the team sat to watch a movie.
“What are you talking about, Stark?” Steve asked with a furrowed brow.
Tony gestured at the bag of gummy worms that you and Bucky were currently sharing. “Just that you two seem to be the only ones around here that never run out of your favorite goodies. You could have stocked up for everyone. That’s all I’m saying.” He shrugged his shoulders and waved a hand through the air as if it wasn’t important, though clearly it was if he’d brought it up.
You rolled your eyes. “Tony, you’re a billionaire. Pay someone to do your shopping and have it delivered, you big baby.”
The super soldiers on either side of you laughed and you settled more firmly into your seat between them. Tony started to say something else but Natasha smacked his arm. “Shut up. Movie’s starting.”
He grumbled which brought another smile to your face. He really was an overgrown kid sometimes. Really, you were just pleased that he’d shut the hell up. After all, if you’d wanted your crushes to know you were secretly taking care of them, you would have done it not so secretly. Liking both of them was awkward enough without them being aware of it, thank you very much.
Honestly, until that day, Steve had just assumed that Tony had someone that replenished the food in the kitchenette on their floor. True, they’d never seen anyone, but it wasn’t like it happened by magic. It was just over a week later when Steve glanced up from his drawing when Bucky walked into their living room. “Hey Buck, you didn’t do any cleaning did you?”
Bucky snorted. “There’s never anything to clean is there?”
Steve frowned. “Yeah, I noticed that to. I asked Stark if he had a service that did our floor. You know what he said?”
“I’m guessing he said no or we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Bucky answered as he sat across the table from his boyfriend.
“He asked if I wanted him to get someone in to help us out.”
Confusion caused Bucky’s brow to furrow as he leaned forward. “So, someone has been coming into our space, replacing our food and cleaning up after us and we have no idea who it is?”
“Looks like it.”
There was a stretch of silence before Bucky asked, “Why?”
***
It started when the boys were on a mission. You’d raided Buck’s candy stash for movie night and before you replaced it, you’d done an inventory and picked up everything else they were needing. It wasn’t like it took much more effort. And when you’d seen how happy they were when they arrived home to all their favorites, that was all the incentive you needed to keep doing it.
You made sure to refill their stash when they were on mission or out for training so they wouldn’t catch you. There was always the chance they’d return when you weren’t expecting it, but the odds were slim. After all, you made a living by sneaking around unseen, hence the name Shadow. The cleaning started when they were gone on a mission and you didn’t want them coming home to clutter and dust. You weren’t even sure that they noticed, but it made you happy to have something else you could do for them.
Steve and Bucky were currently on week three of a mission with Nat and Sam and you were sorting out the groceries you’d just bought while you tried to think of something special you could do for them.
“So, why do you do it exactly?” you heard from behind you, causing you to jump. The twins were in San Francisco until tomorrow so you should have had the floor to yourself.
You scowled when you found Tony standing behind you wearing his infamous smirk.
“Jumpy?”
Your cheeks heated as you turned back to the task at hand, hoping Tony wouldn’t notice at least half of your food was for the super soldiers. “Mind was just elsewhere. What’s up?”
“I was just wondering why you pamper the geriatric twins if you aren’t going to take credit for it?”
You froze briefly before finishing up and placing the boys’ food back into bags so you could carry it upstairs. Finally, you turned and crossed your arms over your chest as you leaned against the counter behind you. “I don’t suppose it would do me any good to deny it?”
He chuckled as he moved closer. “They asked me to look into it before they left. It was the complete lack of evidence that led me to you actually. Only one person I know can get around my system like that.”
“Shit.” You were a technomancer and were very skilled at making tech do what you wanted. Tony hadn’t been thrilled the first time you’d completely circumvented the tower’s security. Now he used you to test out new systems. Finally, you quit freaking out enough to meet his eyes. “Are you going to tell them?”
He tilted his head and frowned at you. “Why are you so dead set against them figuring this out? You know they won’t be anything other than grateful.”
“Because they’ll want to know why and I can’t tell them that.” Your voice was quiet but you knew he’d heard your answer.
“Well how about you tell me then, sparky?” he suggested.
You rolled your eyes at his stupid nickname as you sighed. He wasn’t the most trustworthy when it came to secrets but you were dying to tell someone. And honestly, he would probably be the least judgmental out of everyone. “You can’t tell anyone, Tony. I mean it.”
He rubbed his hands together and closed most of the distance between you. “My lips are sealed. You have my word.”
You arched a brow but chose not to comment. You closed your eyes not wanting to look at him as you made the confession. “I might possibly be just a little bit in love with them.” When you got no response you opened one eye to find Tony grinning at you as he rocked on his feet. You opened the other eye to give him a narrow-eyed look. “What?”
“I think you should tell them.”
“Not funny, Stark.”
“Wasn’t meant to be, sweetheart.” You just stared at him, saying nothing. After a few moments, he sighed. “Listen, as amusing as it might be to trick you into having that conversation with them and recording it to watch at my leisure later, I wouldn’t do that to you.”
“That little admission didn’t exactly help your cause any.”
He ran a hand down his face. “I can’t tell you that I know for sure how they’ll react, because I can’t. I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught them checking you out when they think no one’s watching. Or how many times they’ve argued about who got to sit beside you when there was only one seat left. Or the number of whispered conversations they have that fade away when you walk into the room. And while I have had many female friends over the years, I have never suggested any of them sit in my lap unless I was trying to take things beyond friendship.”
You frowned. “I sit in their laps all the time.”
His hands went out to the side as if to say ‘see?’.
Your frown deepened as you recalled something else. “Wait, didn’t you try to get me to sit in your lap when I was still new?”
Tony chuckled and turned around to walk off. “Only proving my point, Y/L/N,” he called over his shoulder.
It was barely five minutes after he left that you gathered the bags of food to take upstairs and put away. You weren’t certain you’d survive sitting around doing nothing and there was only so much training you could stand in a day. “Protocol five, J,” you said as you stepped onto the elevator. “Super soldiers’ floor, please.”
“Of course, Miss.” Protocol five would shut down all recording devices anywhere in your vicinity until you turned it off.
You made short work of putting the food away and glanced around. Things were fairly tidy though they could use a dust and a quick vacuum. A peek in both bedrooms had you wrinkling your nose. They’d had back-to-back missions before they’d left on the current one and obviously hadn’t had time to do laundry. While the boys normally slept together, they maintained their own spaces in case one of them was having a bad night or just needed some time to themselves.
Moving into Bucky’s space, you gathered up all the laundry and threw it out into the hallway. You also stripped the bedding and added it to the pile. You put a load in the washer before moving to Steve’s room. There was more laundry there as it was the space they shared the most often. You added to the pile already in the hallway before stripping those sheets as well.
After sorting the clothes into loads, you took about half of them down to your floor and started a load there as well before heading back upstairs. You opened windows in both bedrooms to let them air out as you put fresh sheets on the beds. You dusted and straightened and vacuumed only pausing as necessary to switch out the laundry.
By the time you finished all but the last loads of laundry, their rooms looked better than they had in months and they had clean sheets to crawl into when they got home. You’d cleaned the rest of the floor as well and were heading back to your floor to take care of the last of the clothes. You had to wait a bit for them to finish drying, but then once it was all folded and sorted, you loaded up the laundry basket to put it away. You were happy you’d gotten so much done.
Apparently ignoring your feelings made you productive, who knew? Most of the clothes in your basket were Buck’s so you headed to his room first. You reached for the handle, only to have the door open on its own. Your mouth dropped and the basket fell to your feet as you ran your gaze up a naked torso to see Bucky frowning at you. He was dressed in a pair of sweats and his hair was still wet from a shower. His gaze darted from you to the basket and back as a grin crept over his face. “Fuck,” you breathed out and took a step back. “I’m sorry. I-I need to go.”
He reached out and snagged your wrist before you got more than a step. “I don’t think so, sugar.” He tugged you gently back in his direction and lifted your chin with a finger since you seemed unable to look at him on your own. “Where do you think you’re going to escape to anyway, Y/N? We know where you live.”
“I was thinking of moving to Alaska. I hear it’s nice there this time of year.”
“You hate the cold,” he said with a laugh and looped an arm around your waist.
Your heart raced and you prayed that his stupid super soldier senses wouldn’t clue him in, but who were you kidding? You’d never be that lucky.
“Oh, Steve,” he called in a sing-song voice. “I have something for you.”
“Not now, Buck. I’m…” Steve’s voice trailed off as he stepped into the hall and saw you. His ears and cheeks turned a rather adorable shade of red and you couldn’t stop a giggle at the sight. “What’s this?” he asked looking between the two of you.
Bucky nudged the laundry basket into view with his foot. “I intercepted her on her way to put away the last of the laundry.”
Steve straightened immediately. “Oh, did you?”
And damned if his voice didn’t drop a whole octave when he said it. Now it was your turn to be embarrassed. You squirmed in Bucky’s hold but didn’t try to escape. There was no point. He chuckled behind you and passed you over to Steve when he held a hand out toward you. You licked your lips as you took it and let him lead you into the living room.
He sat on the couch and pulled you down onto his lap. Bucky sat right beside him and pulled your legs onto his lap. You cleared your throat. “I can sit by myself.”
“I’m sure you can, baby,” Steve assured. “But I’m happy with you in my lap. And you like to make me happy, don’t you, Y/N?”
Oh.
My.
God.
That was not fair. Not fucking fair at all.
Steve trailed a finger up your spine, chuckling when you shivered at his touch. His finger continued it’s journey up your neck then back along its previous path as he talked. “When Buck and I were kids, there wasn’t a lot of money to go around. Less so for me because of my meds. Our folks taking care of us meant putting food on the table and mending our clothes. Sometimes there might be enough for a dime novel or some sweets, but for the most part we took care of each other.”
Bucky kept rubbing little circles on your ankle with his thumb. “That hasn’t changed much over the last several decades. You know, except when I was trying to kill him. But then someone else started taking care of us. In a million little ways we didn’t always notice. Not right away anyway.”
“But then we did notice and we started making note of everything that made us feel cared for.” Steve’s hand flattened on your back and his fingers flexed slightly as he said, “Loved.”
“So, tell us, Y/N, why did you do it?” Bucky asked.
You shrugged and stared at your hands where they twisted together in your lap. “I stole your candy and needed to replace it so I picked up some other stuff. But then I saw how happy you were when you had your favorite snacks when you got home and that made me happy. The more I did, the happier and more relaxed you seemed so I kept doing it. I like it when you’re happy. Both of you.”
“That the only reason, baby? You like us happy?” Steve asked as he trailed that damned finger back up your spine.
You jumped out of his lap and stepped back until you were out of easy reach for either of them. They stared at you in surprise and you held out a hand to stop them when they started to stand. “No. You stay put. You two aren’t playing fair.”
“How’s that, doll?” Bucky asked, his blue eyes sparking with amusement.
“You with the touching and the sugar and the arm around the waist,” you said gesturing to Bucky before turning to his boyfriend. “And you with the baby and more touching and the deep voice. It’s not fair. It’s not.” You sucked in a breath. “My entire life I’ve been attracted to the unattainable guy. Every fucking time. But this time I really outdid myself because I fell in love with not just one, but two unattainable men and they’re dating each other. I mean fuck my life. Seriously. What is that? So yes, I did all of this because I love you. Both of you. And I’ll keep doing it for the same reason and it will always make me happy to see you happy. But at the end of the day, you two have each other and I don’t and that’s not fucking fair so stop. Just stop, okay?”
Steve stood first as if afraid to startle you. He stepped forward and swept his thumb across your cheek wiping away the tears you hadn’t been aware of. His hands settled on either side of your neck as he studied your eyes for the longest time. “You’ve got quite the fucking mouth on you, baby,” he said then tugged you forward and slammed his lips onto yours.
You hesitated for only a moment, a brief stretch of time and then you let yourself go. Your Steve was kissing you and it was nothing like you’d imagined. There was nothing soft or questioning about it. It was firm, sure, and altogether fucking fantastic. His hands moved to your thighs and lifted as his lips stayed glued to yours. You wrapped your legs around his waist and as he turned, his lips slid from your mouth to travel the length of your neck. His open mouth kisses alternated with tiny nips that were sure to bruise and you rolled your hips against him in response. He hissed against your skin and you smiled.
A large hand grasped your chin and turned your head until another pair of lips slanted over yours. Bucky. His kiss was dark and rich and full of promises. He shifted his body so he supported your back as his hands found the hem of your shirt. Cool metal and warm flesh contrasted against your skin as he slid over your belly and up to caress your breasts. “Oh God.” You rolled your hips again, Steve pressed against your front and Bucky pressed against your ass.
“Fuck,” Steve said as his hands tightened on your waist in an effort to still your movements.
Bucky chuckled against the back of your neck and bit at the skin there, his bite firmer, more punishing than Steve’s. “What’s the matter, punk? She pushing you to the edge already?”
“Suck it, Barnes.”
“I intend to, Rogers.”
That had you grinning. This playful love they had between them was what you wanted. Was part of the reason you fell in love with both of them. Bucky’s gaze shifted to you and he mirrored your grin. “I love you, Buck.”
His grin widened. “You hear that, Stevie? She loves me. God, that’s sexy.” He kissed you soundly then pulled you from Steve’s arms to carry you bridal style to the bedroom. “I love you, too, sugar.”
That earned him another kiss. You put your hand against the door frame to stop him before he could carry you inside. This needed to be said before you were all in bed together. You turned to find Steve with a question in his eyes. “I love you, too, Steve.”
His smile was sweet, soft. “I know you do, baby.” He placed a hand on your cheek and gave you a soft kiss. “I love you, too. Have for awhile if I’m honest. We both have. Turns out we were both feeling guilty for loving someone else and it was the same girl. Never dreamed you’d actually be ours though.” You kissed him again and it only took a moment for it to take on a rougher edge.
Bucky turned you so he could carry you into the room, causing your lips to be pulled from Steve’s. You whimpered at the loss of contact and both men chuckled. “Don’t worry, baby, you’ll have more of us than you can handle in a moment.”
You squealed as Buck tossed you into the middle of their king sized bed. You propped yourself up on your elbows and bit your lip as you looked at the two men standing before you. “Promise, soldiers?”
“Oh, sweetheart, that’s a goddamn guarantee.”

Enhypen Little Angels Series: When they find out their s/o is pregnant
warnings: cursing, mentions of miscarriage and hospitals, collapsing, vomiting and couvade syndrome (for Sunghoon and Sunoo)
this happens before the og enha little angels
taglist: @skyaura-koo @serendipityclick @en-sun @envirae @exulansis-eun @gamezzzz
Pls tell me if I forgot anyone from the taglist and I'll fix it immediately.
I'll try to fix any grammar mistakes. Sorry for the delay
word count: 1,523 words
Lee Heeseung:
“Heeseung... What if i'm really pregnant?” Mina said bouncing on her feet.
Being nervous wasn't the words that she would use to describe how she feeling at the moment.
“If you are pregnant, then that means that our child will have the most amazing mother and the most amazing father.” He set his hands around Mina's waist, then accommodated his head on her shoulder.
“I'm not talking about that.” She sighed, looking at the ring on her finger.
“You mean... the loss?” Mina nodded, her gaze was sad and her eyes were glossy.
“It wasn't your fault jagi, and I know that you fear that the same thing will happen again, but I promise you that everything will turn out for good.” Heeseung placed a soft kiss on his wife's lips, then unified his forehead with hers.
“I think... I'll go check the test.” Mina said before placing a kiss in Heeseung's cheek and going to the bathroom to see the results.
He waited a few seconds and then...
“Heeseung, I'm actually pregnant!”
Park Jongseong
“How many times do I have to tell you that I'm fine?” Bella said looking at IV hooked on her hand.
Jay kept walking around the hospital room, he was a little bit mad, he thought that Bella hadn't taken care of herself as he told her to.
“As many times as you want, because it's not gonna work for me, or make me feel better.” He kept pacing around back and forth, trying to keep himself calm.
“If you keep rambling nothing will be solved.” Jay huffed, as he pinched the skin of his left arm.
“And if you keep dismissing your health nothing will get solved!”
Bella groaned, sometimes Jay could be way to stubborn.
“How many times do I have to tell you that I've been taking care of myself.” She pouted.
“It doesn't seem like that to me.”
Just in time the doctor appeared on the room.
“What is it doctor? Is she healthy?” She smiled at Jay and then at Bella.
“Well, there isn't any problem... Except that you have high levels of HCG.”
They both looked at the doctor completely confused.
“This high level of HCG only appears on pregnancy. Congratulations, you are pregnant.”
If they were confused before then, I don't know how to describe how they felt by the moment.
“Huh?!”
Shim Jaeyun
“Do you think is something bad?”
Jake shook his head, while looking around the doctor's office. He was way more anxious than what he showed, but he tried his best to stay calm for Teagan.
It had been days since Teagan started vomiting and having nausea, to the point that she spent most days locked in the bathroom and nearly fell down the stairs because of how dizzy she felt.
“I'm done! I'm taking you to the doctors!”
Teagan looked at him dumbfounded. Why did he wanted to take her to the doctors so suddenly.
“But I feel fine.”
“Being fine is not nearly falling down the stairs because of dizziness.”
Teagan hated hospitals with all her might, and always tried everything to avoid them, but guess who still drag her to the hospital? Jake!
The doctor finally entered the office, making the couple turn their gaze to him.
He gave them a small smile, before saying:
“I already have your lab results...”
Jake grabbed his wife's hand, trying to calm himself down a little and also reassuring her that everything will be okay.
In the best case he thought you had a stomach bug. In the worst case you could some kind of terminal illness.
... But gladly those weren't the cases.
“It seems like you have high levels of human chorionic gonadotropin.” Teagan looked at the doctor with a dumbfounded gaze.
“What those that mean?” Teagan looked at the doctor and then looked at Jake who was in shock, but then spoke.
“It means... that you are pregnant.”
Park Sunghoon
... It started when Sunghoon started having symptoms. Hyeyoung noticed how tired Sunghoon was does days and how he started having cravings... A lot of cravings.
“And can you please add an extra order of fries please?” “Thank you.”
He hanged up on the call while Hyeyoung looked at him weirded out.
“You sure you are okay?” She walked up to him, seating beside him on the sofa.
“Yeah, why wouldn't I be?”
“Well... because you are acting like a pregnant woman.”
Sunghoon giggled a little, before he realised that...
“Hyeyoung? When was the last time that you had your period?” The girl looked down for moment, and then she finally realised what was going on.
Now they were both looking at the positive pregnancy on their hands.
“Oh shit!”
“OH HOLY SHIT!”
Kim Sunoo
Another case of couvade syndrome...
“Ah! Noona! Sunoo-Hyung just fainted!” Aera ran to the studio and saw the boys fanning Sunoo to make him feel better.
Sunno saw Aera's worried expression and then smiled at her to ease her up.
“I'm fine jagiya. I'm just tired.” He stood up with the help of his oldest members.
He walked up to Aera, who changed her expression suddenly, she started feeling way to dizzy and all off the sudden she lost her balance and collapse on Sunoo's.
The rest of the members started shouting worriedly and asked the staff to call medical help.
“I guess we have the same condition or something.” Sunoo spoke when they where both in the doctors office waiting for both of their results.
“It's probably the flu, or a cold is kicking our butts.” Aera chucked and Sunoo giggled a little.
The doctor entered the room, with the results on his hands.
“Well it seems like Sunoo is pretty healthy and there is no reason for your collapse, except that you have couvade syndrome.” He frowned at the doctors words wanting a clear explanation.
“It's when a partner presents the same symptoms as their pregnant partner.” Aera was the one frowning at that moment. Was the doctor saying what she thought he was saying?
“I'm sorry, but my wife is not...”
“The fuck?! She's pregnant?!”
Yang Jungwon
This boy rushed to the hospital the moment that he got a call from her mom, saying that Mirae had fallen down the stairs.
He freaked out, but when he got there Mirae explained him that she had blacked out and that made her fall down three steps of stairs.
“Are you sure you don't feel pain or anything?” Jungwon played with her hair, while he sat on her hospital bed.
“Wonie, I'm fine, it's just a small bruise”
“And a concussion.” Mirae's mother blurted that out of nowhere. Which made the girl murmured a "Mom" angrily.
“Ah! I guess I'll stay up with you all night.” He said rubbing her shoulders.
“I also have something else to tell you...” She grabbed a strand of hair and started playing with it.
“Hmm?” Jungwon payed all his attention ontu her.
“The doctor did a few tests... Everything's okay, but...” She passed and stayed quiet for while.
“What's wrong Rae, you can tell me anything, remember?” Jungwon smiled showing his cute dimples.
Mirae sighed, inhaled... Then exhaled.
“I'm pregnant.”
Jungwon seemed in shock by what she had just blurted out, but then started laughing immediately.
He was happy, obviously he was... But then he paused.
“When did I made you a baby?”
Nishimura Riki
They where both visiting Niki's parents in Japan, they where on vacations so they used that to pay a visit to them.
Mei Lin wasn't feeling that good throughout the whole way to her in laws house, she felt like throwing up the ride in the plane, but she thought it was just motion sickness.
“You sure you are okay? If you don't feel well enough, we can stay at the hotel and go tomorrow.” Niki wasn't that sure of what to do at the moment, but he thought it would pass in a few hours.
“No, I think I still feel bad because of the flight, but it'll pass in a few minutes, I promise.” She said patting Niki's head before calling over a taxi.
They got home pretty fast and had dinner. They were both enjoying their time, but something about the food just made Mei feel nauseated. So she covered her mouth and nose with her left hand.
The family noticed pretty fast and Niki's sister was already looking for a pill to calm Mei's stomach down.
While Niki was rubbing her back, his mother commented.
“You know, this reminds me of the symptoms I had when I had a few weeks of pregnancy with Riki.” She laughed it off, but something about just made the rest of the family including Mei freeze.
“I think... I'll just go get a pregnancy test.”
Everybody's eyes widened and the thought of their daughter in law being pregnant was kinda shocking.
An hour later, a positive pregnacy test was on the couple's hands.
Niki and Mei were both in complete shock, they were happy of course... But still shocked.
“I wasn't expecting you guys to take me seriously when I said «I want grandchildren as soon as possible.»”

BnHA Chapter 320: Deku vs. Class 1-A
Previously on BnHA: Flashback!Kacchan was all “fuck Deku and fuck his stupid goodbye letters, I need to speak to somebody in charge.” Endeavor was all “hello, I am Somebody In Charge.” Kacchan was all “listen up asshole, you need to let us go out and collect our wayward nerd because you stupidly left him alone with All Might and that’s a fast track to disaster right there.” Endeavor was all, “[self-incriminating silence].” Rat Principal was all, “okay sure, have fun kids.” Back in the present, class 1-A was all “hi Deku” and Deku was all “I’M FINE!!!!!” and Kacchan was all “THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT YOU’D SAY YOU DUMB FUCKING NERD” and so the kids all got ready to fight, because OF COURSE they’re gonna fight. Sorry guys, but yeah it’s happening.
Today on BnHA: Kacchan is all “what’s up Deku you look like a possessed Rorschach test, so anyway how are the new quirks coming along.” Deku is all “they’re coming along like THIS” and uses Smokescreen to try and get away. Kacchan is all “PHASE ONE COMMENCE”, and Kouda, Sero, Jirou, and Ojiro leap into the fray to shower Deku with heaps of love and violence, because this is a shounen manga and kicking someone’s ass while simultaneously proclaiming your undying admiration for them is just how it’s done in these parts. The KoudaSeroOJirou squad then passes the baton to Satou, Momo, Tokoyami, Kaminari, and Shouji, who are all “fuck this mask” and do a bunch of stuff to tear Deku’s mask off because they’re the real heroes. Shouto is all “LOOK AT THE LITTLE CRYBABY, THAT’S RIGHT, GO AHEAD AND FUCKING CRY and by the way let us share your burden please,” and once again I swear this is all very deeply moving and touching within the actual context. The chapter ends with Tsuyu being all “look at me. I’m the cliffhanger now,” and damn.
lol what
I don’t think anyone was expecting that. I mean, not that I’ve got anything against Tsuyu or anything. anyways it’s a very nice cover and I love the colors and I hope this means Tsuyu’s gonna do something badass
also, “Deku vs Class A” -- pretty much the expected title, but it’s still got me hyped nonetheless fuck yeah let’s go
IIDA ANGST

Iida Tenya really said “fuck the uniform code, we’re leaving the helmet at home today.” sorry kids, prim and proper C-3PO Comic Relief Iida has left the building. can I interest you in some Serious Iida
meanwhile Kacchan is all “sup Deku, I heard you got a few more quirks, and might I just add that you look like the Snyder Cut of Detective Pikachu”

“you look like a tarred and feathered squid” okay easy there Kacchan. I mean it’s all true of course, but still
“thank you all for coming” OH EXCUSE ME SON, WERE YOU PLANNING ON GOING SOMEWHERE. LET’S JUST SEE HOW THAT PLAYS OUT
yep and there’s Smokescreen, right on cue

okay Horikoshi, I leave it in your hands. hopefully you can come up with some more interesting combos than my dumbass predictions lol
LOL THIS ISN’T A COMBO AT ALL

“explosions solve everything” -- Horikoshi Kouhei, 2021. something something shockwave, something something handwave ta-da no more smoke. lol okay then
oh, ouch

he would know, wouldn’t he. nice application of one of your many hard-earned life lessons, Kacchan
by the way you guys, just as an experiment, I’m going to try to anticipate some of the discourse this week in the hopes of preemptively addressing it and thus saving myself some time later on lol. so here’s our first test run!
ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “oh my god what a fucking hypocrite can you believe this fucking guy”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: it’s precisely because Kacchan has been in this exact situation himself that he’s able to recognize his past self in Deku now and call him out on it. just because it took him sixteen years to get it through his head that he can’t accomplish every single thing completely by himself doesn’t mean Deku has to go down that same path. so yeah, maybe it is a bit hypocritical, but if you insist that the only people qualified to call out stupid shit are people who have never done a single stupid thing in their own lives, then what you’re basically saying is that absolutely no one on earth is qualified lol. so yeah, I’d have to disagree
and one last unrelated note, I’m willing to bet the whole “you didn’t even say a word before you ran off” thing is possibly the first thing Kacchan’s said in this whole encounter that actually does stem from genuine hurt rather than his tough-love-harsh-truths strategy. I’M TAKING NOTES HERE HORIKOSHI. at this rate it’ll take twice as many chapters as DvK2 for them to hash out all the stuff between them, geez
anyway so I gotta say, so far Deku vs. Class A is looking an awful lot like a DvK3 wearing a hat, trenchcoat, and sunglasses lol
OH SHIT I TAKE IT BACK??

FUCK YEAH, YOU GO KOUDA. and I guess he ditched his mask as well! excellent
so far the strategy here seems to be “Kacchan says all the mean tough love shit while the rest of 1-A balances it out with warmth and kindness”, which actually works pretty well imo. Deku is one of those people that doesn’t usually need a Kacchan Translator anyway, but just in case, this is very efficient
mm but of course Deku is slingshotting himself away with Blackwhip. all right then, who’s up next!
FUCK YEAH

okay but seriously you guys, what is going on with Sero’s face in these last couple of chapters though, it’s really starting to unnerve me. is he trying to emulate Kacchan’s whole asymmetrical facial expressions thing?
in fact let me just quickly hit pause here because,
ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “SERO IS TOGA??!”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: no
oh snap looks like Jirou’s getting in on the action too!
poor Jirou probably spent days racking her brain trying to think of something she could bond with Deku over. is Horikoshi doing these in reverse order of the kids who have had the most interaction with him? that would explain why poor Kouda didn’t get a flashback lol
omg. well that answers that
so by my count, Satou and Hagakure are the only ones remaining in this first tier of kids who Still Appreciate Midoriya even though they’ve barely ever spoken two words to him in their lives lol. so they’ll probably be next, and then we’ll get to the next tier of kids who are pretty good friends with him but not quite besties. and then we’ll move on to the IidaRokiRaka trio, and then lastly, to the boy who is in a tier all his own
BUT FIRST, A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR

and by “sponsor” I mean the Dekuangst. just in case that wasn’t clear. indeed, many thanks to the Dekuangst for making this all possible
(ETA: okay so this whole “take me away” line seemed pretty weird to me, and sure enough it’s yet another one of those cases where only the verb is specified, and the object is left to the reader’s interpretation. so even though the translation says “take me away”, I’m pretty sure that what Deku’s actually saying is “take you away” -- as in, his loved ones will be taken away by AFO.
and that is literally the way he phrases it, though -- the verb used is “奪う” (ubau), meaning “to snatch away; to dispossess; to steal.” which, god, that hurts my whole goddamn heart though, because for him to say it like that?? not “AFO will kill you”, but “AFO will take you away from me.” he can’t have nice things anymore because of AFO. he can’t be around the people he loves because AFO will hurt them. he can’t have happiness because AFO will take it away from him. anyway so where the fuck is AFO right now, motherfucker I just want to talk.)
by the way can Ojiro just extend his tail to whatever fucking length he wants or what because it’s like twelve feet long in this panel lol
WOOO FUCK YEAH TOKOYAMI

YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!! BUT WHERE’S YOUR FLASHBACK? YOU’VE HAD A BUNCH OF INTERACTIONS WITH HIM, THAT’S NOT FAIR
okay so now Satou’s stepping in which is back to my anticipated order, so maybe Toko will finish his little moment afterward
dskfjfkk

“REMEMBER THAT TIME DEKU BORROWED SATOU’S FOOD COLORING” Horikoshi says, sweating. “AND REMEMBER THAT TIME HE, UM, SMILED IN HAGAKURE’S GENERAL DIRECTION”
actually I am curious about what Hagakure’s part will be because, you know, the whole traitor thing lol
(ETA: funny how we just skipped right over it huh. can we get a traitor reveal countdown started here? definitely getting close to that time.)
whoa lol wtf

MOMO??? THIS HAS MOMO WRITTEN ALL OVER IT DAMMIT
-- SWEET MOTHER OF FUCK

“SORRY MIDORIYA-SAN, I LEFT MY FUCKING CHILL AT HOME IN THE LOCKER NEXT TO IIDA’S HELMET” holy shit lmao
and here I thought she’d get a flashback to her time on the Baku Rescue Squad or something. but nope, no flashbacks from Momo, only terrifying sci-fi torture devices
poor Dark Shadow is such a trooper omg

“why am I the only one who has to make prolonged contact with his smelly disgusting self” taking one for the team there DS
FUCK YEAH KAMINARI NO JUTSU

THE PRICKLY BASTARD WHISPERER STRIKES AGAIN!! don’t suppose you brought any clean clothes you could sneakily force him into huh Kami
okay here we go, so now Shouji and Tokoyami are joining forces
um excuse me this is fucking awesome
wonder how he’ll break free? don’t think he’ll reveal Fa Jin until the end of the chapter, so maybe Air Force or something? idk
TOKO GETS AN EXTENDED MOMENT BECAUSE HE IS A TIER TWO PATREON REWARD LEVEL FRIEND YAY
WHY IS MOMO MAKING THIS FACE LOL YOUR THING WAS WAY WORSE
and Shouji just casually hitting him with what is easily the best comment from anyone yet. too bad Deku’s just gonna ignore it. you deserve better Shouji
KAMINARI OMFG
it only just occurred to me that Kami is currently trapped inside Dark Shadow right along with him lmao omg. realest one in the entirety of BnHA, right here. we will never forget your sacrifice
aaaaaaand Deku’s yeeting himself

do you really hate the thought of taking a bath that much my dude
oh shit the mask!!
-- oh shit the feels
o(TヘTo)
fuck. and I mean, we knew he was crying, that was a done deal. but still, to see him in this much pain is just...
and the acknowledgement that he knows they’re worried about him, but that it doesn’t change his mind one bit. this, right here, is why they have to be a bit harsh with him, you guys. because they’re up against the full, unbridled stubbornness of Midoriya fucking Izuku, and if they don’t match that stubbornness with an equal stubbornness of their own, they basically don’t stand a chance
(ETA: quick note that there is apparently another mistranslation here -- rather than saying that his friends are oblivious to the danger, what Deku is actually saying is that none of his friends have activated his Danger Sense once throughout this entire fight. which I had been wondering about, and it turns out Horikoshi actually confirmed it. so basically none of the kids bears any ill intent toward him, and there’s literal proof right there.
incidentally, as @class1akids pointed out, this also casts an interesting light on this chapter in terms of who hasn’t fought Deku yet. not to play the Hagakure Traitor Music for the billionth time you guys, but I’M JUST SAYING lol.)
anyway, but the good news is that they all seem to understand that. and the even better news is that we have reached the tier 3 friends!!
“OR ELSE” lol, great to see Shouto wielding his friendship just as aggressively as Deku once did towards him. I do love a good role reversal
p.s., ANTICIPATED DISCOURSE: “why is Shouto being so cruel to Deku can’t he see how hard this is on him”
PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: this is a callback to the classic “even heroes cry when they have to” Shouto line from chapter 137. Shouto is clearly following Kacchan’s lead here and going for the more ruthless approach, knowing that the gentle approach isn’t getting through to him (if anything it’s only making him more stubborn as we saw on the previous page). basically it’s his way of pointing out that even heroes are still only human, and so is Deku last time he checked
ah okay, and there Tsuyu is at last
okay real talk, I get why Tsuyu is included in the tier 3 friends, because she was one of the first people to team up with Deku going all the way back to USJ. but that said, this probably would have had more impact if their most recent interaction hadn’t been like 150 chapters ago
but anyway though it’s still a good speech. maybe not quite a cliffhanger-level speech, but a good speech nonetheless. in a way though, I’m glad to see that Horikoshi seemingly didn’t give a fuck whether he ended this on an actual cliffhanger or not for once
and that “headed toward the climax” part has me excited too, ngl. because if we really are getting to the so-called climax this soon, that makes me even more certain that there is indeed a DvK3 in the forecast. so I presume that next week (or I guess two weeks from now) will be the tier 3s along with the remaining tier 2s like Kirishima and Aoyama
and then after that, well... [orange and green banners being hoisted] [sound of screeching airhorns and vuvuzelas in the distance] [sound of All Might approaching in his car which I didn’t notice until I looked back at this page a second time whoops] THE PROPHECY WILL NOT BE DENIED

Summary: Toriel's old house feels like a mausoleum. She will gladly ignore chisp crumbs and lumpy mattresses for a place that feels more like home. (Queen Toriel ending fic for Soriel Week 2021.)
Word Count: 5211
XXX
The bedroom was exactly how she left it. Her bed pushed up against the gray wall. A book about snails on the wooden desk. A knit sweater with the embroidered words "Mrs. Mom Lady" in the wardrobe.
Even after all this time, she could barely look at it without her soul splitting in two.
She'd known this wouldn't be easy. She hadn't seen this house in over a century. Still, she wasn't prepared for how Asgore had sealed up her old room like a tomb, a photograph of the day that everything went terribly, horribly wrong.
At least the last child was safe. They should not have had to take a life to save their own, but she doubted Asgore had given them a choice. Her own soul felt more numb than anything. To her, Asgore had died a century ago.
What was done, was done. And as usual, she was too late to do anything but sweep up the dust.
She backed through the doorframe, shutting the door with a quiet click. She would have to return eventually, but for now, she yearned for a place with fewer painful memories.
"Hey, Your Majesty." A voice startled her as she attempted to escape the foyer. Luckily it was a voice she would always recognize.
"Hello, old friend." She turned and smiled at the monster leaning against the stair railing.
He was smaller than she expected, with that deep voice. Not that that was a bad thing. As for him being a skeleton, that had been apparent from the abundance of bone puns.
"You know the formality is unnecessary," she told him softly.
"Is it?" He shuffled from foot to slippered foot.
In all her time of joking with him through the door, she had never expected him to be so cute.
"Didn't want to assume, old lady."
He winked, and she felt a weight lift from her chest. At least one monster would still treat her like a person, and not like a mythical figure returned to save them.
"Toriel," she introduced herself for the first time. He had to have heard already, but between rushing to the palace, scattering Asgore's dust, comforting their—her people… she hadn't had time to seek out her friend.
He seemed to feel comfortable walking right into her home, though. Did he ever visit Asgore when he was here? Her friend seemed like the type of monster who went wherever he felt like, and Asgore, for all his flaws, had never turned a monster away from his home.
"Sans." He held out a bony hand. "Sans the skeleton."
"Nice to meet you, Sans," she tested out the name and clasped his hand with her paw.
A loud pthbbbbbt echoed through the empty hall. Her eyes widened.
"Wow, Toriel. That's, uh, some way to make an introduction." He winked.
She squinted down at the inflatable object in his hand, the source of the farting noise. Then she pretended to ignore it.
"It certainly is. I was not aware that skeletons were capable of flatulence."
His eyelights gutted for a moment before he burst out laughing.
"Your jokes are even better in person," he said once he composed himself.
His laugh set her soul fluttering. In all their conversations through the door, he'd never laughed like that. Maybe she should have tried fart jokes sooner.
"I am always happy to tickle your funny bone." She smiled, and his face tinged blue.
"Happy to be tickled. But, uh. I guess that's not all I'm here for?"
Her breath caught in her lungs. Of course he would not visit without a reason.
"I suppose not. Would you like to have a seat?"
"It's nothing that serious," he assured her quickly. "I just thought you'd want an update on the kid."
"You've spoken with them? They are still here?" She tried to keep the hysteria from her voice.
How could they have taken Asgore’s soul and not returned home? Had the Barrier proven too powerful?
"No—geez, I'm making this sound worse." He ran a bony palm down his face. "They’re definitely gone. Papyrus tried to call them nonstop. Besides that, you know the big stuff. The king's dead."
Her lips drew to a thin line, pulling tight across her fangs.
"I can hardly fault them for that."
"Right." He stuck his hands back in his pockets. "I gotta be honest. The way the kid looked when I last saw them… I don't think they did it."
Her brow furrowed. She was inclined to hope that the child had not chosen violence. They had been so sweet, so eager to talk and joke with the monsters of the Ruins, so quick to hug her even after she’d fought them. It was hard to imagine them striking down Asgore.
"But… then what do you think happened?"
Sans shrugged. "Wish I knew. I kept watch best I could, but…"
"I could not expect you to come between them and your king." As much as she wished he could have. She had hardly expected him to agree to watch over the human at all.
“Couldn’t have even if I wanted to. These bones aren’t as sturdy as they look. Maybe I shoulda listened to my bro and drank more milk...” He grimaced and glanced away. “Anyway. Like I said, I don’t know what happened. Just. Be careful, okay?”
“Careful?” She blinked.
“Yeah. You never know.” His gaze flickered to a potted golden flower on the end table next to the stairs.
“Sans. If I did not know better, that would sound like a threat.” She crouched down, so she could better meet his eyesockets. “Is there something you are trying to tell me?”
“Man. First I rip one in front of a lady, then I threaten her. I’m makin’ a great first impression.” He rocked back and forth on his slippers. “Look. Toriel. I don’t wanna scare you, ‘specially since today must’ve been hard. Real hard.”
His eyelights bored into her irises. She found herself needing to look away.
“It has certainly been… interesting. Moreso than any day since I last saw this place.” She suppressed a shudder.
Change. Her life had been constant for so long. There would be no more of that, now. Hopefully that would be for the better, but only time would tell.
“Yeah. Being flung away from everything you’re used to… don’t imagine that’s a cakewalk. Don’t want you to worry about freaks hiding in the shadows on top of that.”
Somehow, she felt he made more sense when he was on the other side of a door. Knock-knock jokes had a formula. Just another normalcy she had forfeited, she supposed.
“Please, Sans. If you believe I am in danger, you may say so.”
“Fine. So.” He grinned, and she couldn’t help a snort.
“Alright, I suppose I walked into that one.” She smiled, despite his warning. “Under normal circumstances, I would say I could handle myself. But I must admit you are more updated on the state of the kingdom than I. Do you have any information that could help?”
“...Not really?” His grin turned sheepish. “You look like a tough lady. I bet my bones are rattling over nothing.”
“I would still humer-us you.”
He gave her a funny look. “You’re actually taking me seriously?”
“Why would I not? You are my friend. Perhaps… my only friend, at this point,” she admitted. It would be foolish to ignore a warning, even if it was based on gut feeling. Or, whatever skeletons had in place of a gut.
“Well. Uh. If someone, something, was behind the king’s… yeah. If it wasn’t the kid, whoever else it was might still be around. So.” He coughed. “Sounds stupid when I say it like that, huh.”
“It does not. I think it is sweet that you are worried.” He wouldn’t be able to see her blush, thankfully. It had been a long time since anyone had looked out for her.
“Geez, Toriel.” He rubbed the back of his skull. “You’re gonna ruin my reputation.”
“What reputation? Are you typically a monster with a heart of bone?” she teased.
“Nah. I just don’t worry. Too much work.” It was difficult to tell if he was joking. “Guess I can make an exception this once, though.”
“Why, thank you, my friend.” She had the sudden urge to reach out and squeeze his hand. It would be more for her own comfort than his, so she did not act on it. “To be honest, your words are a relief. I do not mind the excuse to avoid this place.”
“Oh.” He sounded surprised. “You got somewhere else you’d rather be?”
She both did, and did not. How could she explain without sounding like a clinging child?
...Perhaps that was the wrong metaphor. She would have preferred her children to be a little clingier.
“‘Cause, uh, if you don’t mind a bit of mess… my door’s always open.”
She blinked at the offer. Had he felt the thoughts stirring in her soul?
She didn’t want to be alone. Not again. And she had told him the truth: there were unlikely to be any other monsters she knew still around. Perhaps Gerson; she and Asgore had always joked that he would outlive them.
That joke seemed awfully morbid now.
“Sorry. Was that too forward? Our friendship’s built off closed doors; guess we should just take 'em one at a—"
"No," she interjected too forcefully. “No. I would love to visit your home.”
Though she had never set foot there, she already suspected it would feel more like a home than this place.
“You really—? Great.” His skull tinged the faintest blue. “Just, uh, know that it’s nothing fancy.”
Toriel smiled. “‘Nothing fancy’ sounds wonderful at the moment.”
Perhaps wherever he lived would be out of the way enough that news of her return would be delayed. If she could be lucky enough to pass for an ordinary monster… well, that was likely too much to wish for. It certainly wasn’t becoming of a queen to hide from her subjects.
Stars, there was so much to get used to. So many formalities to reacquaint herself with. She hoped such things would wait until tomorrow.
Sans returned her smile.
“In that case, I know a shortcut.”
XXX
She handled the shortcut well for a first-timer. No stumbling on the other end, no complaints of nausea or dizziness. Of course, she was a Queen. A Boss Monster. Why would a magic trick ruin her composure?
Sans wanted to laugh. All this time, he'd been joking with the Queen. She didn't seem to mind, but she could just be “humerus”ing him.
...Nah. She had every excuse to ignore him if she really wanted to. Instead she'd actually taken him up on his offer.
He almost forgot to drop her hand once their feet landed in the soft snow. Heh. Who was he kidding? It was just nice to feel her fur under his fingers. To touch her, and know that she was real.
"Oh!" Her eyes lit up, reflecting the gyftmas lights strung haphazardly around the house's columns. "I remember this place!"
"You do?" Sans's browbone furrowed.
"I saw it while travelling from the Ruins to…" she trailed off. To stop the kid from fighting Asgore.
Sans felt stupid for not trying to stop them himself. Not that a kid that determined would’ve listened, anyway. Still… he’d believed in them. Hoped that by some miracle, they’d get ‘em out of this mess.
Heh. That was too much pressure to put on a kid, even a determined one.
"Yeah." He coughed quietly. "Guess we're hard to miss. Papyrus did something to the Gyftmas lights—even when the CORE lights go out for the night, ours stay on. Never figured out how he pulled that off."
Toriel laughed before seeming to realize something.
"I will get to meet your brother!" She clasped her hands together. "I wish it had not come about for such an unhappy reason, but I am excited nonetheless."
He chuckled. Her excitement was contagious. That was something she and Papyrus had in common already.
He pushed the door open, called out for his brother—and noticed the monster sprawled out on his couch.
"Oh." Sans blinked at Undyne, who was snoring so loudly, he should've heard it from outside. Guess he'd been a little distracted. "Uh. This is awkward."
"What is it?" Toriel hung back, her head ducking through the doorframe. "Is your brother sleeping? I would not wish to wake him. You said he rarely sleeps, did you not?"
"Nah, it's not him. Forgot his pal's house burned down. Actually, I'm sure you met her. Undyne? Captain of the Royal Guard?"
"I… yes, we met." Toriel edged inside, closing the door behind her with a soft click. "She looks far more peaceful now than she did this morning. From what I understand, my ex-husband was something of a father to her."
"Something like that." Sans nodded in agreement. There hadn't even been a Royal Guard until Asgore created the position for her. Sans wondered if Toriel would keep it around now that Asgore was gone.
Welp. It wouldn't hurt, what with his suspicions about Papyrus's friend "Flowery."
(Maybe Sans should let Toriel sleep on the top floor rather than the couch anyway. No dirt for stray flowers to get into up there.)
"Should we be staring?" Toriel said with a soft chuckle.
Sans shook his thoughts away. "Sorry. Just thinking. I, uh…"
There wasn't room on the top floor. Sans's lumpy, crumb-dusted mattress was out of the question. That left only Papyrus's bed, which while rarely in use, had too much sentimental value to give to Toriel without asking. Where was Papyrus, anyway?
"Undyne!" His brother practically kicked in the door. "I have returned with nutritious—oh!"
Papyrus's sockets blinked at Toriel. Then at Sans. Then at Toriel again.
(Undyne let out another loud snore.)
"Sans?” Papyrus dropped his groceries on the table next to the pet rock. “Why didn't you tell me we had another guest??"
Because he was an idiot who hadn't planned past one impulsive offer. His face went a little blue.
"I guest you would figure it out," he managed to joke.
Toriel let out a bleating laugh at that. The suddenness of it was enough to jolt Undyne awake.
"NGAHH!!" She tried to leap off the couch, but ended up rolling onto the floor. "I'm here, Asgore! I won't—oh."
Her single eye blinked up at Toriel.
"Papyrus?" Undyne hissed through her teeth. "Why didn't you tell me the Queen was coming??"
"Because I didn't know!" Papyrus replied brightly.
"I, uh, promise I'm usually more professional than this." Undyne summoned an energy spear and used it to push herself to her feet. The attack left a small char mark on the carpet. "I am at your service, Your Majesty."
Sans thought she looked real professional in a pair of Papyrus's MTT-brand crop top pajamas. Toriel didn't comment on that though, instead opting for a matronly smile.
"There is no need for that, Captain. I am not here on business, but as a friend."
That smile turned towards Sans, and he fought back a blush.
"Yeah. I was just gonna, uh, make some dinner. Y'know, welcome our queen back with some Snowdin hospitality."
"Dinner?" Papyrus squinted suspiciously. "You don't cook dinner. I cook dinner."
"First time for everything, right?" Sans winked to hide his embarrassment.
Of course Papyrus wouldn't buy his excuse. But he really didn't want his brother and Undyne worrying on top of Toriel. Granted, it was Undyne's job to worry about security threats… but she'd tear up the house's foundation if she thought an enemy might be hiding anywhere in a five-mile radius.
"Sans," Toriel chided him. "You do not owe me that."
"Wowie! You must be a great influence on him, Bald Asgore!"
Toriel blinked before bursting out laughing. Sans's grin widened.
"Her name is Toriel, bro."
"Of course!! Where are my manners?" Papyrus bustled past him to shake Toriel's paws. "I am the Great Papyrus! It's an honor to meet you, Queen Toriel!"
"The honor is mine. Sans has told me so much about you," she said, and Papyrus blushed pink.
"You? Know the new queen?" Undyne whispered to Sans while Papyrus and Toriel got acquainted.
"You know me. I know everyone." He winked.
"She came out of nowhere."
"Yeah. My bro and I know what that's like."
Undyne huffed, but Sans didn't offer a more thorough explanation.
Papyrus's affronted shout signalled that Toriel had dropped her first pun.
"I take it back! This is the worst day of my life!!"
Sans met Toriel's eyes, and they both laughed.
"I suppose I will have to help Sans in the kitchen as my pun-ishment," she said with a coy wink.
"Normally I would object to a guest cooking, but in this case I will make an exception!" Papyrus turned on his heel and grabbed Undyne's arm. "We will clean up the living room in the meantime! Try not to corrupt the queen any further, Sans!!"
"Wouldn't dream of it, bro."
He gave a quick wink to Toriel behind Papyrus's back, and they moved to the kitchen.
"Did I actually upset him…?" She asked once they were out of earshot.
"Nah. He's just dramatic like that. He'll drop three puns per sentence when he thinks I'm not listening."
He turned away, rummaging through the fridge for something edible they could cook. Discreetly, he tucked his empty chisp bag behind Papyrus’s spaghetti-filled tupperware.
“Oh, good. I would not want to make a bad first impression.”
“Pfft. You’d have to try real hard to do that, Tori. My bro sees the best in everyone.” He smiled and pulled a “pupperoni” pizza out of the freezer. It wasn’t anything fancy, but at least it would be edible.
He turned around, pizza in hand, and found Toriel staring at him oddly.
“What?” His sockets widened. “Uh, you’re not vegetarian, are you?”
She shook her head quickly, her gaze skimming off of his like oil from water.
“Pizza sounds lovely. It has been quite some time since I had one.”
Sans didn’t pry, but he couldn’t help wondering what her expression had meant. Had he said something weird?
...Oh. He’d called her Tori, hadn’t he? He should know better than to use nicknames without asking. Papyrus hated them.
“Please, allow me.” She held out her paws, so she couldn’t be too upset.
He handed over the pizza, and he jumped when fire flared to life in her palms. For a moment he thought the fire would scorch the pizza beyond recognition, but the flames were just pleasantly warm. He’d never known a monster other than Grillby to have such careful control of fire magic.
“Heh. I didn’t know you were so hot, Toriel.”
As soon as he said it, he clamped his jaw shut. Geez, how stupid could he be? Making bad jokes was one thing, but flirting with bad jokes?
The fire went out. She looked up abruptly—er, looked away from the pizza. He was still a good two feet shorter than her.
“Tori was fine,” she said, her voice soft.
“Uh,” he replied intelligently.
She suppressed a giggle, and he was pretty sure his face burned hotter than her fire had. He could stand to take notes from Alphys and throw himself in the trash.
“Or not. Whatever is comfortable for you,” she reassured him. “Now, should we eat dinner before it gets cold?”
Eating was hardly something he could screw up at.
“Sure,” then after a pause, he tested, “Tori.”
Forget her fire magic. Her smile could’ve heated the pizza all on its own.
XXX
For once in a hundred years, dinner was a warm and energetic affair. In addition to the pizza, Papyrus had tossed together a salad from his fresh groceries, and Sans had briefly stepped out to grab a few orders of wings and fries. In the end there was plenty of food for four hungry monsters.
Papyrus apologized for the lack of seating, but Toriel didn’t mind sitting on the couch squeezed between Sans and Undyne, eating off of paper plates. She couldn’t imagine anywhere she would have felt more comfortable.
Before long, though, the day’s fatigue caught up with her. She supposed it was to be expected—she wouldn’t regain her social stamina all at once.
Sans caught her eye, and he nodded towards the stairs as Undyne and Papyrus “owned” each other in an MTT-Brand fighting game.
“Sorry. I know they can be a bit much.” Sans rubbed the back of his skull.
“They’re lovely. I wish I had the energy to keep up with them.” She smiled.
He leaned against the banister, smiling down at them. Papyrus had gotten the upper hand this time, and was punching the air with joy.
“Me too,” Sans said, still looking away. “I was thinking. If you want a place to rest for the night, my bed’s open.”
She blinked. Her face seemed to catch fire. That was rather more… forward than she was expecting. Sure, she had enjoyed his lighthearted flirting, and much as she tried to deny it, feelings had been growing in her for a long time. But to have him return those feelings? And so boldly? It was as unfathomable as it was unlikely.
“I can get ya some fresh sheets, and I’ll crash in the shed. My bro set up an, uh, guest room there when the human was in town.”
Oh. She rubbed the heat from her face while he wasn’t looking. How foolish could she be, to think he would be implying…? Well.
“I would not force you out of your room,” she said. “If your brother prepared a guest room, I am sure that would be adequate.”
He let out a quick laugh. “Uh, you’re not used to my brother’s… decorating. Seriously, I don’t mind.”
She sighed. If he insisted, she supposed it would be rude to deny his hospitality.
“Alright. Thank you very much, Sans.”
“Great.” He smiled back at her, then went into his brother’s room. She waited patiently, and only jumped a little when he suddenly reappeared from the right hand door. Perhaps the two rooms were connected in the back by a bathroom.
“Hotel Sans, one vacancy.” He winked while holding the door open.
She chuckled behind her hand. “You really did not have to resort to this.”
“Heh, I wouldn’t call it much of a resort. The bed’s not even queen sized.” He rubbed the back of his skull.
The bed was smaller than she was used to, but it did have fresh sheets. That was the only fresh thing about the room. Chisp crumbs had been brushed under the dresser, and… that was a tornado. A self-sustaining trash tornado. Though at least there was a pine-scented air freshener suspended in it.
“Sorry, it’s… really not much. Uh. Probably kinda insulting, expecting the Queen to sleep—”
“It’s perfect.”
He blinked. “Huh?”
“I am no stranger to a few crumbs, Sans.”
She remembered days that bled into weeks that bled into months. Months where she couldn’t bring herself to clean, could hardly bring herself to care at all. Months that had grown fewer and farther between since she’d met a friendly voice behind a door.
“I would’ve vacuumed,” he said sheepishly, “but I suck at it.”
More embarrassingly loud laughter burst from her. In front of Sans, though, she didn’t feel the need to curtail her joy.
“Thank you.” She poured as much sincerity as she could into her voice.
“‘S no problem, Tori.” A light blue tinge warmed his cheekbones. How could he possibly look so adorable? “Bathroom’s down the hall if you wanna wash up or anything. And Undyne’ll be on the couch, so this is probably the safest place in the Underground right now.”
Her brow furrowed. Sure enough, there was no bathroom door inside the room—he must have used one of his “shortcuts” to move from his brother’s room to here.
“So, uh. I’ll be in the shed—uh, guest room if you need me.” He flashed one more tense grin before turning to leave.
“Wait.” She stepped towards him without thinking.
He looked up, one brow ridge raised. She found herself biting her lip, wondering if she dared ask what her soul wanted. It was silly, really. She’d been on her own for years, decades.
Maybe that was why she was so hesitant to lose this one taste of companionship.
“I would feel… safer, if you would stay too.” Her face burned beneath her fur, but she projected her usual composure.
“...Welp. Can’t say no to that, huh?”
She was about to reassure him that he could say no—that she was asking as his friend, not as his queen—but the soft smile on his face told her he already knew.
He briefly left to grab a few things, then returned with a few pillows and, for some reason, a dog bed.
“You are not going to sleep on that,” she said in disbelief.
He flopped the dog bed in the middle of the floor and started fluffing it. “Why not? Gotta throw a dog bed a bone, right?”
“Sans.”
The outdoor lights dimmed, as if at her command. Only the colored Gyftmas lights outside and one dim indoor bulb lit the room.
Her confidence waned with the light. What had she expected him to do? She’d asked him to stay. Unless she wanted to…
Oh, to hell with it. She was too old to be so shy about these things.
“If you are not opposed,” she swallowed, “we could… share this mattress.”
When he looked up, she couldn’t make out his eyelights at all. Their glow returned slowly, like the rising of the sun from her memories.
“Heh… you sure? You don’t even know if I snore.”
She laughed and sat on the bed, patting the space beside her. “You do not know if I snore, either.”
“Fair enough, Tori.”
They took turns cleaning up in the bathroom—she was imposing on Sans enough without adding the smell of dirty fur to his bed. Then she did her best to ignore the flutterings in her soul as he slipped off his hoodie and climbed up onto the mattress. She insisted he stay under the sheets; her fur would keep her warm enough with just the light blanket on top.
The sheets were a barrier in name only. There was only so much space on the mattress, so no matter how he adjusted and apologized, she could still feel the curve of his spine against hers.
It felt amazing. It felt terrifying. It felt like a mistake. It felt like the only thing she’d ever done right.
The one saving grace of the whole situation was that it didn’t stir memories of Asgore. Her royal beds had been triple the size of Sans’s lumpy mattress. She and her ex-husband had rarely slept back to back, and if they had, the feeling would have much different.
“...Tori?” Sans’s voice was just above a whisper. “You, uh, still awake?”
As if she could sleep while enduring the wonderful agony of friendly touch for the first time in a century.
“Yes,” she replied softly. “Am I taking up too much space?”
“No, ‘course not. I was just, uh… geez.” He sounded embarrassed.
Risking their precarious balance, she rolled over to face him. Or to face the back of his skull, at least.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
“Doin’ sans-sational.” He chuckled to himself. “Sorry. Never got to use that one with you before.”
She would have laughed, had she not worried about shaking the whole mattress.
“It was sans-tastic,” she joked back, and he laughed again.
Then abruptly, his laughter cut off.
“Thanks, Tori,” he said in a quiet but firm voice.
“What for?” She wished she could take his hand, see his face, learn what thoughts were passing through his skull. Instead she gave him as much space as physically possible… which still was not much.
A long, silent moment passed. Had he fallen asleep?
“I know it’s not how you wanted,” he finally said, “but I’m glad I got to meet you. So. Thanks.”
Warmth spread outward from her soul to fill her whole body. Sans could probably feel it radiating from her.
“Thank you, Sans. If I had to return, knowing no one…”
He rolled to face her. His eyelights were mere inches from her pupils.
“You would’ve been fine. All you had to do was tell a few of your amazing jokes, and the whole Underground would’ve been linin’ up to be your pals.”
She suppressed a laugh. “I hardly think that would be appropriate, under the circumstances.”
“Eh.” He shrugged. “Plenty of monsters in town cope with jokes. You’d just be relating to the common folk.”
She stared into his sockets a little too intently. At this distance, it easily made her dizzy.
“Would you be included in that demographic?” she couldn’t help asking.
“When I first met you? For sure.” His gaze darted away. “But it’s crazy. Between you and the kid… I’m startin’ to think there’s more to life than good food and bad laughs.”
“Really?” She and the child had made such an impact on him?
“I know. Don’t tell Papyrus. He wouldn’t believe you, anyway.” He winked.
“My lips are sealed.” She smiled.
Silence hung between them. It should have felt awkward, but she couldn’t bring herself to turn away. In the end it was Sans who yawned in her face and then hurriedly flipped back onto his other side.
She laughed, and clearly she was exhausted too, because she pressed a kiss to the back of his skull without thinking.
He froze. She froze. There was no way to play that off gracefully. And there was no way she could fall asleep and pretend that it had not happened.
“Heh… those didn’t feel very sealed to me,” he finally rasped out.
It took her a moment to process what he meant. Meanwhile her embarrassment only burned hotter.
“I am so sorry—”
“I’m not.” When he rolled back to face her, his face was bright blue. “You’ll still be here when I wake up, right?”
His question was tinged with desperation.
“Of course,” she answered automatically, despite the many responsibilities that she would have to attend to in the morning. She was the Queen once more. If she had to, she could adjust the schedule of meetings and speeches to accommodate… this.
Whatever this was to be.
“Remind me in the morning,” he squeezed her hand, “that this is real.”
His hand quickly went limp. She was worried for a moment, before she heard the faint snore escape his nasal cavity.
She gave him a fond smile, and allowed her own eyes to close. She did not know if sleep would come or not. She did not know what challenges the new day would bring, or what old challenges would continue to rear their heads.
But she did know that she was not alone. For tonight, that was enough.

———
The sound of Spencer’s ringtone pierced through the early morning quiet, shrill and disconsolate. Y/N hummed against his chest, shifting as he clumsily reached across to the bedside table to answer it.
“Hey,” he croaked, voice still smothered in sleep. “Mm... When?” He paused, and she could almost make out the answer on the other end. “Got it. Yeah.”
He carefully set the phone back on the bedside table, and then his arms came around her shoulders. He let out a long sigh, the one she’d gotten quite used to over the last year and a half— the one that meant he had to go. She squeezed him around the middle and let out her own sigh. “Case?”
“Yeah.” He ran light fingers down her arm. “Jet’s taking off in ninety minutes.”
She glanced at the bedside table to the alarm clock that read 4:57am. They both knew he needed to leave within the next half hour if he was going to make it on time, but neither one made any effort to move. Instead, they breathed together in the pre-dawn stillness— a single moment of peace before the world and all its ugliness could crash through the fortress they’d constructed around their space and around each other.
“I don’t wanna go,” he whispered.
“I know.” She pressed a kiss over his heart through his t-shirt. “I know.”
“I’m gonna miss everything,” he lamented. “Appointments, and milestones, and firsts, and I— I’m gonna miss all of it.”
She lifted her head at the tears in his voice. “Hey.” She shifted in the circle of his arms to prop herself up on his chest. “You’re not gonna miss all of it. You’ll miss this one appointment. And it’s— it’s not even an important one,” she assured, gentle fingers swiping away the lone tear that had managed to escape over his lash line.
“Yes, it is.” He shook his head. “They're all important.”
She gave him a sympathetic smile, leaning forward to press a quick peck to his lips before sitting up and deciding to reassure him in the only way she knew how. “Okay, doctor. Eleven weeks. Tell me what we’re gonna find out today.”
She pulled him up out of bed, interlacing their fingers and pressing their shoulders together. As she led him to the bathroom, he explained, “Dr. Layton will do the first ultrasound, and Baby will look more like a baby now. At around ten weeks they made the transition from embryo to fetus. They’ll be about two inches long.”
She handed him his toothbrush and turned to grab his toiletry go-back from the linen closet, stifling a yawn. “Mmhm. What else?”
“Did you know they’re breathing now?” he asked, and she smiled at the way the excitement crept into his voice. “Between weeks ten and eleven, the fetus starts to inhale and exhale small amounts of amniotic fluid, which aids in the development of their lungs. It’s kind of like they’re breathing underwater.”
“I didn’t know that,” she admitted, turning back to set the bag on the counter. “That’s pretty amazing. What about the heartbeat?”
He nodded vigorously as he applied toothpaste to the bristles of his brush. “We should be able to hear it, although sometimes it’s too early— depending on the accuracy of the estimated date of conception.”
He ran the water over the toothbrush before popping it into his mouth. She kissed his shoulder and then moved back into the bedroom, shuffling into their closet for his go bag. She checked it over on her way back to the bathroom, ensuring it had been fully repacked after the last case. She set it on the counter and placed his toiletry bag inside, leaving it open for him to pack his toothbrush and then sitting on the closed toilet lid.
He rinsed his mouth and put his travel cap over the head of his toothbrush, gesturing with it and then dropping it into the bag. “They’ll do some routine lab work to test for things like gestational diabetes, and we can also choose to do additional screeners for chromosomal abnormalities and possible complications.” He looked at her then, and she saw the despondence creeping back in. “I should really be there, just— just in case.”
“Honey.” She stood and held out her hand to him, smiling a little when he accepted it with a squeeze. “It’s gonna be okay.”
He let out a breath and pulled her into his arms, and they held each other in the silence, the soft light from the vanity washing over them. His phone buzzed with an incoming message, and she knew he needed to get on the road. Still, she held him for a second longer, and then they shuffled through the door and into the bedroom together.
Y/N made her way back to bed, scooting down under the duvet to preserve the last remaining notes of his body warmth. She watched as he dressed silently, pulling on trousers, socks, a button up and cardigan. He skipped the tie in favor of coming to sit on the bed, bringing his hand to rest lightly over top of her belly over the covers.
She covered his hand with her own and laced their fingers together. “Maybe you could ask Luke if you can FaceTime with his phone. You can probably take twenty minutes, right?”
He nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, I can do that.” He rubbed a tired hand over his face. “Maybe I should just upgrade my own phone.”
She huffed out a laugh. “Oh, I see how it is. Couldn’t upgrade for me, but once a baby comes along you’re ready for an iPhone.”
“That’s not— you— you shouldn’t have to do all of this alone,” he huffed, and she realized her joke didn’t land when his voice cracked at the end.
“Spence, I’m— I’m just teasing.” She lifted her hands to his face, pulling him closer and meeting his eyes. “I’m sorry; you’re upset, and that wasn’t nice.”
She leaned up to kiss his forehead, letting her lips linger and breathing him in. “But I’m not alone. With you, I feel— the opposite of alone.”
“Irritated?” he offered.
“No,” she laughed. “Supported, and cared for, and loved,” she corrected with a smile. “You’ve been all of that since day one. And I know that’s not going to change, whether you’re physically present in that doctor's office or not. Right?”
When he nodded, she continued, “I love you. The most. And you are easily the best baby daddy on planet earth. Okay?”
The term of endearment dragged a smile from him, as it always did. “Okay.”
She leaned forward to press her lips to his, both sets upturned and a little dry from sleep. “Now, you need to go, or you’re gonna be late.”
“I know.” He kissed her again, long and slow, and then pulled back to lean their foreheads together. He hesitated for another ten seconds before standing to grab his bag from the bathroom.
When he re-emerged, she reminded him, “Ask Luke about the FaceTime thing. I’m sure he won’t mind, and we can trust him to keep the secret. The appointment technically starts at 1:00, but I probably won’t be seen until at least 1:30.”
He crossed to give her another kiss. “I love you.” He crouched to press a kiss to her tummy. “And you.”
“We love you, too,” she smiled, fingers tangling in his curls. “And we’ll talk to you in a few hours.”
She kissed him one more time— couldn’t help herself. And then his warmth was gone from the bed, and the house was suddenly much too quiet. She snuggled back down under the duvet, her head on his pillow and the scent of his shampoo shrouding her senses and easing her mind.
Spencer really was supportive— endlessly so. Not overbearing, but interested and involved in every moment: reading all the newest research, bringing home her favorite treats, writing out a color-coded timeline of all the appointments and milestones. She wasn’t lying when she called him the best baby daddy. He was always there for her. So much so that the apprehension she’d had at the beginning of this surprise journey was nowhere to be found.
As she drifted back into sleep, there he was again— she could almost hear the jangling of his keys in the bowl in the entryway, his feet on the stairs, the rustling of his pants and sweater being discarded onto the floor of their bedroom.
And then she felt the warmth of his palm low over her tummy, coming to rest over the barely-there bump. She felt his lips on her shoulder and his chest pressed against her back. When she went to cover his hand with her own, her exhausted brain registered that it wasn’t a dream at all.
She turned her head, blinking her eyes open to see him smiling at her and drew her brows together. “What’s going on?”
He pressed another kiss to her shoulder, snuggling even closer and rubbing his thumb along her belly. “I’m, um— I told Emily I’m gonna consult from home on this one.”
…
“Okay, Mom, this’ll just be a little bit cold.”
Dr. Layton smoothed the gel over Y/N’s lower abdomen, and Spencer moved to thread their fingers together, shifting to stand even closer to the examination table. The ultrasound machine gave off a low hum as the doctor adjusted the wand over her tummy. She felt Spencer press a kiss to her temple and turned to smile brightly at him before turning back to the black and white screen.
At her first appointment five weeks ago, she’d been by herself— alone and uncertain and terrified— and she’d declined the option of the ultrasound. It felt wrong to see the baby before Spencer even knew about them. Now, together with him, with her soon-to-be husband— she was more than ready to see their baby for the first time. And she could practically feel Spencer’s excitement next to her, his body nearly vibrating with it.
“Ah, here they are. Hello, Baby Reid.” Dr. Layton pointed to a small, white figure on the screen. “Okay, right here, you can see their big ol’ head— perfectly normal size for this stage of development,” she assured, eyes deftly scanning the image in front of her. “Everything looks great! Now, I’m just trying to find…”
She adjusted the wand over Y/N’s tummy, and suddenly a wub wub wub came over the tinny speaker of the machine. “There we are,” Dr. Layton smiled. “Very strong heartbeat.”
Spencer squeezed Y/N’s hand, and she felt the drop of a tear on her shoulder. She brought her other hand over to cover their tangled fingers, rubbing her thumb along the skin of his wrist and kissing his arm.
Dr. Layton made a slightly perplexed humming sound, moving the wand again and losing the sound of the heartbeat, only to pick it up again— this time slightly faster. Y/N’s own heart stuttered a little as the doctor moved the wand again twice more, and then cleared her throat. “Is something— is everything okay?”
She turned to Y/N with a kind smile. “Yes, yes,” she confirmed, and then she raised her eyebrows. “Just— do you hear the difference?”
Spencer tilted his head in consideration, drawing his brows together and straining to hear. The doctor shifted the wand once more, allowing them to hear the two distinct patterns.
Two distinct patterns, Y/N realized.
Dr. Layton pressed the wand a little more firmly into her abdomen, moved it just slightly. “Those are two different heartbeats.” She pointed to the screen. “And those are two different babies. There’s a matching set of Baby Reids in there.”
Y/N couldn’t stop her jaw from dropping. “Is there—” She turned to Spencer incredulously. “Do twins run in your family?”
He shook his head silently, eyes wide. “Yours?”
“Nope,” she squeaked.
“This obviously changes things slightly,” Dr. Layton explained, cleaning up the residual gel. “I’d like to see you every three weeks rather than every four. Then at twenty eight weeks, we’ll see how we feel, okay?”
She smiled gently as Y/N and Spencer nodded dumbly. She removed her gloves and stood. “I’m going to give you two a few minutes. I’ll be back with your photos in a bit, and we can talk about any questions you might have.”
The door closed behind her, and the room was bathed in silence. Y/N sat up carefully and swung her legs over the side of the examination table. She looked down at her tiny, unassuming bump and felt a tear slip over her lashes.
“Are you— are you okay?” Spencer whispered.
She brought her gaze to his, found them teeming with barely restrained joy and yet the ever-present worry. “Well,” she started. “I, um— I always imagined two kids.” She brought her hands up to her sweaty cheeks and held her own face between her palms. “I guess this is— you know— just a quicker way to get there.”
Spencer immediately wrapped her in a hug, pressing kisses over her hair, her forehead, her shocked mouth. “Two babies. We’re having two babies.”
“Twins, Spence,” she breathed. “Twins.”
He replaced her hands with his own, cradling her face and kissing her sweetly, sighing all of his joy and adoration into her mouth. “I love you. So much. The most.” He lowered himself to press his lips to her belly. “All of you.”
She used gentle hands in his hair to tilt his face up, meeting his smile with a watery one of her own. “We love you, too, baby daddy.”
She could see the gears turning as he stood, his hands coming to rest on her hips. “About that.”
She raised her eyebrows. “Yes?”
“Do you, um— how difficult do you think it would be to get everyone together this weekend?”
She paused. “You wanna get married this weekend?”
“Yeah, that’s probably too soon, huh?” He huffed out a sigh, then his eyebrows shot up. “Oh, what about next weekend?”
“That’s just as soon!” she laughed.
He furrowed his brow. “No, it’s not. There's a seven day difference.”
“You’re really in a rush, huh?” she teased.
“Well. I just— I figure you should really be on my insurance anyway,” he reasoned. “Especially now that it’s— now that it’s twins.”
“Mm, yes, I’m sure that’s the reason,” she grinned.
He let out a long breath, and she watched his eyes journey over her face— memorizing every curve and angle, every new wrinkle, every last inch of her. And she knew the reason.
“I know it’s just a piece of paper,” he murmured. “It doesn’t really change anything, but…” He used gentle fingers to brush her hair back from her face. “I just… really want to be your husband.”
She took her own minute to memorize the way he looked in this moment: her fiancé, the father of her children, the best man she’d ever known, the absolute love of her life. And she knew her own reason.
“The paper might not change anything,” she agreed. “But— you’ve changed everything.”
He squeezed her hips. “In a good way I hope.”
“The best way.” She brought her hands to his face, rubbing her thumbs along his cheeks. “The best way.”
He closed the distance between them to kiss her with all the honey and magic and reverence he always did. He broke away to lean his forehead against hers with all the warmth and devotion and love he always did. She sighed, and it was all joy and vulnerability and contentment like it always was. And she knew their reasons.
She kissed him again, and then murmured against his lips, “You know I’m still gonna refer to you as baby daddy, right?”
The laugh erupted from his chest and wrapped itself around her heart, tying tight and secure— a shield, and a haven, and a refuge— keeping her safe from every terrible thing.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
…
O no! Love is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
- William Shakespeare, Sonnet 116

The Rest Of Our Lives - Mason Mount Series 🦋 (Chapter Three) Departure
Warnings: none but next chapter is smutty ;)
Recommended Listening: Forever by Labrinth (Slowed).

——————————————————————————
After releasing me from the hug I was immersed in, I quickly went to the bathroom whilst Mason waited patiently for me outside in the hallway. Once I had finished and came back out to meet him, the little smirk on his face made my heart so full. Maybe he really did miss me like he had said, but if so why didn’t he get in contact sooner? I guess he was afraid of the rejection but I really did wish he had still tried. At the end of the day, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. Of course I was still hurt by him, but I did want to give him his chance to explain everything, even if it meant we wouldn’t rekindle the friendship like it once was, and we would still go our separate ways again.
“You alright?,” he asked in a soft tone.
“Yeah..” I gave him a small smile before he nodded and took my hand leading me back upstairs to the nightclub’s centre-point. It was only at the top of the stairs that we were caught in our tracks by a stunning blonde-haired girl who had recognised my old best friend.
“Mase gorgeous, how are you? I haven’t heard from you or seen you in a while. I thought you might have fell of the face of the earth or something.” she piped up. His reaction was like a deer caught in headlights. Who the hell was this? I knew it wasn’t his girlfriend but she seemed to be someone who was at one stage more than just a friend like I was.
“Uh, hi Olivia, yeah..” he began to speak back to her. “I um, I’ve just been busy sorry, I’m good how are you?” he continued unconfidently, itching to get away from this current conversation.
“Too busy, huh?.” She raised her eyebrows and chuckled. I was standing there so awkwardly, not knowing what to do or where to look. She didn’t pay attention to me once, her eyes fixated on the brown-haired man beside me. “And here’s me thinking Mason Mount would never be too busy to reply or spend some time with me..” she gasped jokingly, but I knew she was being serious and I really didn’t like the vibe I was getting off her. My heart began shattering again out of jealousy. It’s amazing how you can go without seeing someone for years and even though they broke you, in an instant all the feelings and memories come rushing back. And that’s exactly what happened when I saw Mason on the street earlier this night. Even though it was /my/hand he was still holding, I still felt threatened.
“Awh no.. I mean.. I don’t know. I’m sorry as I said I’ve just been really busy,” was all he could come up with as a response, his palm becoming sweaty interlaced with my own. You know when you can feel your heart beating in another part of your body? I could feel his through his hand in my grasp.
“Hmm okay.” She said with barely any emotion behind it. “So who’s this little one then? Your new girl?” Her attention was now focused on me, now frozen with a tightness in my chest. I should have spoken up. I wanted to. But I was unable to. Thankfully, Mason covered for me.
“Uh, no she’s just a.. a friend..” he trailed off, so unsure of his answer and looking across at me, his eyes soliciting for an answer. Realistically, we were former friends. But within time, we both hoped we could drop the former. Slowly nodding as reassurance, I turned back to look at the the tall woman standing in front of me.
“Just friends?” her eyes widened with a smug look, pointing towards our intertwined fingers. I went to let go of Mason’s hand but his grip tightened, letting me know it was okay and he had the situation under control.
“Yeah this is my childhood best friend Sophie. I uh- I ran into her down outside the bathrooms and she wasn’t feeling the best so I said I’d bring her back upstairs and take her home. I just wanted to keep her close in case she fainted or anything.” he announced. Her eyes were now practically staring into my soul, but buying it, she just replied with an ‘oh’ and I signalled in agreement once again.
“Well, that was nice of you.” She smiled pompously. “Anyhoo, you have my number. Don’t be stranger.”
“Right.” Mason gulped and she winked walking away. Once gone, he turned to look at me again, apologising with his eyes. I bit my lip and shook my head to let him know that it was alright and that we didn’t have to talk about it. To be honest, I did want to talk about it. I wanted to know who she was. Was he sleeping with her? And if so was it going to progress any further? So many questions filled my mind but I tried to forget about them, telling myself that it was none of my business and it was before we had reconnected to night anyways.
Making our way over to Hollie, the look of disappointment across of her face said more than words ever could. She was relieved to see that I hadn’t gone missing, but she wasn’t too impressed that on my return I had brought back Mason with me. Giving me a moment to talk to her, Mason stepped away, resting his arm on the bar counter and facing the dance floor.
“What’s going on, are you okay? I went looking for you but I seen you talking to him from the top of the stairs and I didn’t want to interrupt.” She whispered sympathetically.
“Yeah I’m fine, thank you Hol. And I’m sorry I left you for so long.” I replied.
“No no, don’t be sorry. I was more than alright up here, I was talking to that bartender for ages anyways. I’m sorry Soph, I didn’t realise he would be here too. Is everything okay between you both?”
I wanted to say yes. But was everything okay between us both? I mean for now it was. I was giving him his opportunity to talk to me, but I hadn’t heard his side of the story yet nor had I forgiven him. Trying to find the right words to respond with, I took a deep breath.
“It’s not your fault Hollie, I was the one who said I wanted to come here in the first place. And I guess for now yeah. I’m giving him a chance to clear up everything and get some clarity on the whole thing. It doesn’t mean we’re going to go back to being how we were before but at least if we can be on civil terms.. I don’t know that’s got to be worth something right?” I asked, in hope of encouragement.
Hollie was the best friend a girl could ask for. She was more like a big sister despite me being older; a little dumb and clumsy at times, but no matter how many bad and possibly avoidable situations she put herself in, she would always make sure I didn’t do the same. She only wanted the best for me, as did I for her, so she basically made herself the crash test dummy and tried to advise me as much as possible. And she always made me laugh and smile without fail, after every heart break, every failure, basically anything terrible circumstance you can think of. She was always there.
“Well that’s your choice and I think it’s fair enough.” She gave me a fragile smile. “Just be smart and don’t let him hurt you again Soph. I seen how much pain and anguish you were in tonight and I never want to see you like that again. It’s alright that you want some light shed and some closure on the situation, but don’t let him blindside you and destroy your heart again, okay?” she raised her brows, placing both hands either side of my shoulders to make sure I was listening. Nodding to let her know I understood, she gave me a full warm smile back.
“Okay, so I think I’m going back to Dylan’s house once he’s finished his shift”. She added, referring to the bartender who was now waving at us. “But I don’t know what your plans are so I don’t have to if you don’t want me to and you need me.”
“No no, you go. I’ll find out what Mase and I are doing and once I’m back home and safe I’ll give you a text and let you know. If I need you at any stage I’ll call you.” I said before giving her a hug and getting ready to leave.
“Okay, I’ll do the same!” She mumbled, and with that I rejoined Mason who had finished informing his teammates and friends what was happening. Putting an arm around my waist, we had left the nightclub once again with crisp and fresh night air.
——————————————————————————-
Quick A/N: AHH I’m so excited for the next chapter you guys are gonna love it I hope! Also, the reason I put listening recommendations is to help you all imagine what I’m visualising when I right my stories and ideas! Music basically helps me set the scene. When you’re listening to the song attached to this post, I want y’all to try visualise yourself walking in slow-mo through a crowded nightclub holding hands with THE Mason Mount. Everyone looking at you both leaving, but he’s looking back every so often just to make sure you’re okay. Just imagine. That’s all :)

Embers to Ashes
hotch x unsub!reader
Summary: When (Y/N) leaves the BAU, she doesn’t expect to get wrapped up in a crime spree
Word Count: 2609
Warnings: abusive relationship, pregnancy & mentions of childbirth, typical criminal minds violence
“The real monsters are humans without conscience.” -Robert E. Keller
~
Your decision to leave the BAU was not an easy one, but it was what was best. After your mother fell ill, you decided to move back home to care for her, as she was alone. Your team protested, not wanting you to leave, of course. Penelope fought for you to stay the hardest. She was like the sister you never had.
The team followed you to the airport to see you off. Hugs went around, followed by promises that you’d call when you land. The only person who didn’t hug you was Hotch, which you found weird for a number of reasons. Even Spencer hugged you, and he wasn’t big on physical affection. And you’d always thought you and Hotch were close.
“Hey, promise me you’ll keep in touch,” he said, resting his hand on your shoulder.
“Yeah, of course,” you said.
“Oh, I need another hug!” Penelope said, squeezing you tight again. She’d been crying the whole time and her mascara was running. “I’m gonna miss you so much, Peaches.”
“I’m gonna miss you too, Pen,” you said. You glanced at your watch. “Okay, I really have to go now. I love you guys so much.”
~
You were grocery shopping for your mother when you ran into him. Nicholas Gully, one of your old high school friends.
“(Y/N)? (Y/N) (L/N)?”
“Nick! Hi!” you said, tossing the box of pasta into your shopping cart. “How have you been?”
“Oh, great. What about you? Big FBI agent out at Quantico.”
You laughed awkwardly and rubbed the back of your neck. “Yeah, uh, I actually quit.”
“What? Why? All you talked about in high school was getting into the academy.”
“Uh, well, it’s because of Mom actually. She’s sick. I quit to move back out here and help her until she… Well…”
“Yeah. Well, I’m here if you need to, I don’t know, let off steam?” He handed you a business card. “Here. My number. Give me a call, we’ll go out for drinks or something.”
You smiled. “Thanks, Nick. It was good seeing you.”
~
Your mom died about a month after you moved home. You were an only child, so it was your responsibility to handle all of her affairs. It was stressful, and you felt isolated. Alone.
You looked at all the funeral plans spread out on the kitchen table, and before you knew it, you’d called Nick and asked him to come over.
What happened next was a blur. You buried your mother next to your father, Nick stayed by your side the whole time. While your mind was clouded with grief, you thought the only good thing to come of it was your new relationship with Nick.
He was nice. He treated you well and helped you through your grief. Only, he didn’t like how much you talked to Penelope and Emily, saying that it was unnatural to be so close to your ex-coworkers. So you stopped talking to them.
Nick moved in with you not too long into your relationship. He said that living in your mother’s house alone wasn’t healthy for you. He helped you sort and pack up her belongings, taking the things you weren’t keeping or throwing out to the thrift store.
You were together for about 8 months before your relationship changed.
You hadn’t been feeling well and you had your suspicions. You took a trip to the drug store and bought a few tests while Nick was at work. You took all of them, trying to rule out a false positive.
When you heard Nick come in from work, you decided to tell him.
“Hey, Nick? I have some news,” you said after he put his work bag down on the couch.
“What’s up?”
“Um, you know how I haven’t been feeling well lately? Well, I went to the pharmacy and picked up some pregnancy tests. They were all positive.”
“Are you serious? You’re pregnant?”
You nodded. “I’m calling my doctor first thing tomorrow to schedule an appointment.”
Nick’s tone should have tipped you off to his true nature. But you were in too deep.
~
A few months passed. You were showing significantly, though your doctor was worried about your health. The bags under your eyes grew, and you were showing up to your appointments with more and more bruises on your arms. One day you came in with a poorly concealed black eye.
One day, you came home from a doctor’s appointment to see Nick packing some bags.
“Nick? What’s going on?”
“We’re going on a trip,” he said. “Roadtrip, it’ll be fun.”
“Nick, I’m 7 weeks away from my due date-”
“You’ll be fine,” he snapped, thrusting a bag at you. “Get in the car.”
You headed outside, Nick’s hand firmly on your back. He steered you away from your old clunker towards a shiny new SUV. “Did you buy a new car?” you asked.
“Sure, buy. Let’s go with that.”
“Nick, what did you do? What did you get us into?”
“Don’t worry about it. Get in.”
“Nick-”
“I said, get in.”
~
“Des Moines PD has a case for us,” Penelope said. “As do St. Louis, Louisville, and Charleston.”
“Carjacking?” Morgan asked, flipping through the case file. “Why are they asking us to come in?”
“It’s the same MO,” Hotch explained. “It’s a couple, a man and a woman, presumably his wife or girlfriend. They find a home just outside the city and take the car at night, leaving the previously stolen car.”
“They’re active at night? How do we know it’s a team?” Spencer asked.
“The second victim had security cameras installed. They caught glimpses of the couple, but not enough for us to identify,” Penelope explained.
“Why are they only bringing us in now?” Emily asked. “It says the first theft was over a month ago.”
“Because this one ended in a murder and assult. The surviving victims are at the hospital. Wheels up in 30,” Hotch said.
~
When the team landed in West Virginia, Hotch divided the team up between the hospital, the crime scene, and the coroner’s office. Hotch and Emily took the hospital to interview the victims. One was a woman in her mid-30s, and the other was her 6-year-old son. The husband had been the murdered victim.
“Hi, Mrs. Foster? I’m Agent Hotchner,” Hotch said, taking a seat next to the woman with Emily. “Would you mind answering a few questions for us?”
“Well, I’m-I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to remember but…”
“Anything you tell us can help us catch these two,” Emily said, gently patting the woman’s hand. “We’re going to try something called a cognitive interview, to see what your subconscious picked up, okay?”
The woman nodded. “Okay.”
“Go ahead and close your eyes,” Emily said. “So, it was late. You and your husband were getting ready for bed. Then what?”
“Neil heard a noise,” she said. “He said it sounded like a man. He grabbed Micah’s little league bat from beside the front door. He told me to wait inside. Micah had fallen asleep on our couch and came to see what was going on. I-I heard Neil yell and I heard a gunshot. I ran outside and I saw a couple. A man and a woman.”
“What can you tell me about them? What did they look like?”
“I didn’t see the man too well, but the woman, well, I only saw her face. But she looked bad.”
“What do you mean?” Emily asked.
“Well, her skin was sunken and sallow. She had bruises all over. She looked like she was ready to drop at any second.”
“Okay. What happened then?”
“Neil was bleeding on the ground. I-I ran over to him and felt for his pulse. It was already gone. Then the man hit my head with the gun, and I fell to the ground. But Micah- I didn’t know Micah followed me. The man pointed his gun at Micah. I was terrified. I thought he was going to shoot my son, too. But then the woman stood in front of the gun. She started pleading with the man. I was fading in and out of consciousness, but I heard her.”
“Nick, don’t!”
“What did I tell you? You don’t get to call me that, whore.”
“I-I’m sorry, sir. But, please, don’t hurt him. He’s just a boy.”
“He saw our faces. You know the police are already on our trail. We can’t have a kid squealing to the cops.”
“No, I… I won’t let you.”
“You won’t let me?”
“He hit her,” Mrs. Foster said. “Hard. It was so hard I thought he shot her, too.” She shook her head. “After that, he knocked me out. I don’t know what happened next. I just remember waking up here.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Foster,” Hotch said. “This was very helpful.” Hotch and Emily got up to leave.
“Wait, Agent Prentiss,” she called after Hotch left the room. Emily turned around. “When you find them, go easy on the woman.”
“Why would you want us to do that?” she asked.
“I work at a battered women’s shelter. I see women like her all the time. She’s profoundly abused. She’s not a criminal, she’s a victim.”
~
Micah Foster was able to give a detailed description of the man to the sketch artist. Thanks to his description, they were able to track him down outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. What they weren’t counting on was seeing you, in the passenger seat.
Nick didn’t want to go down without a fight. But his idea of a fight was to use you as a human shield. He held you in front of him, his arm bracing against your throat. He had a gun in his other hand, training it on the team.
“You shoot, you hit her!” he said, pressing harder on your throat.
“Okay, okay,” Morgan said, holding his gun up in surrender. “We won’t shoot. Just let (Y/N) go.”
Nick turned the gun and pressed it to your temple. “Why are you so concerned about her?
“Because she’s a person,” Derek said, trying to negotiate. “She doesn’t need to get hurt.”
A gunshot went off. You screamed and stumbled forward, Morgan catching you. Nick fell to the ground, dropping his gun and gripping his thigh. Hotch had snuck up behind and shot him in the leg.
~
The next thing you knew, you were in an interrogation room with Hotch and Emily.
“(Y/N), what happened?” Emily asked you, her voice gentle. “You look awful. What did he do to you?”
Your eyes were trained on the table. “Nothing. He treats me with nothing but respect. I did this to myself.”
“(Y/N), we all know that’s not true,” Emily said. “Talk to us. You know us.”
You kept your eyes on the metal table and you stayed quiet.
“Damn it, (Y/N)!” Hotch yelled, slamming his hands on the table. You flinched back, closing your eyes and wincing like you were bracing for a hit. Hotch took a step back. “Prentiss, take over.”
He left the interrogation room and stormed over to the second room where Morgan and Reid were interrogating Nicholas.
“Hotch-”
“What the hell did you do to her?” Hotch nearly screamed, his blood boiling.
Nick smiled. “I didn’t do anything, she did it all to herself.”
“We both know that’s not true, you piece of-”
“Aaron!” Rossi said, cutting him off. He then proceeded to pull Hotch from the interrogation room. “What the hell is going on with you?”
Hotch took a deep breath, rubbing his hand over his face. “You saw her, Dave. You saw what that asshole did to her. You saw her flinch away from me. That’s a woman who has faced down some of the worst humanity has to offer, and she’s been so badly abused that she’s…”
“Aaron, you know what abuse does to people. We’ve seen it more times than I ever want to count.”
“But it’s never been someone we know. It’s never been someone we love.”
“Ah. So that’s what this is about.”
“What?”
“Nothing. Why don’t you sit this one out? Prentiss and I can handle it.” Rossi walked into the room and sat next to Emily. Emily had given you a glass of water.
“(Y/N), why did you save the mother and her son?” she asked you.
“I don’t know,” you said, twisting the glass around in your hands.
“(Y/N).” Emily reached out and put her hand on yours. “You specifically looked out for the boy. Why?”
A tear rolled down your cheek. “Nick made me leave mine,” you whispered.
“What?”
“He said she would slow us down, that she was a burden. He made me leave her at a church. I didn’t even get to hold her.” After that, you broke down sobbing. Emily slowly crossed to the other side of the table and cautiously put her arm around you.
~
The team worked out a deal for you with the DA. You would be acquitted if you testified against Nick, and you would be closely watched by the team.
“She can’t keep sleeping on the couch in the conference room, Hotch,” Rossi said as the team gathered in the bullpen. You were asleep and the team wanted you to have peace. “She can come stay with me. Lord knows I have the space.”
“Wait, why should she stay with you? She’s my best friend,” Penelope argued. “She can stay with me.”
“Babygirl, you don’t have a spare room,” Derek reminded her. “I can take her in.”
“She just spent the better part of two years under the thumb of an alpha male, do you think she’d feel comfortable staying with another one?” Emily said.
“Did any of you think maybe she should make her own choice?” Spencer piped up. “I mean, she hasn’t been able to make her own choices, I think we should at least give her that.”
“Reid is right,” Hotch said. “We should let her make the choice. And please, don’t pressure her. She’s not the same (Y/N) she was when she left. She’s been through hell and back.”
~
In the end, you chose to stay with Aaron. Something about him made you feel safe. Slowly but surely, you started warming up again. You spent your days taking care of Jack when Hotch was on cases. When Aaron was home, he spent time with you and Jack. The two of you grew closer and closer.
You’d stayed with Aaron for a few months before there was a shift in your relationship. You weren’t sure when it happened, but you and Aaron were closer. You became more comfortable with physical contact, and you found yourself curling up on the couch with Aaron for movie nights after Jack went to bed.
You kissed Aaron first. He’d come back from a case with a book he knew you’d been wanting to read. It was something simple, but it meant the world to you, knowing there was someone who listened to you and wanted to do something nice for you.
Your relationship blossomed from there, and Aaron made sure to show you he respected you and never wanted to hurt you. Of course, there were bad days and there were days you argued, but Aaron never raised a hand against you. He never wanted you to experience the pain Nick caused you ever again.

Word Count: 3,110ish
Summary: Kinda all over the place... hope it makes sense.
I do not own Marvel or Grey’s Anatomy.
You were sleepily cuddled up to Steve in the comfort of your bed when you heard Val’s voice outside your door.
“Clint!” She exclaimed. “You locked the door. I need to take a shower.”
“Uh, uh, I’ll be out in a minute!” Clint responded.
“What are you doing in there?”
You groaned, curling into Steve further. His hold tightened around you as the bickering continued out in the hallway.
“It’s private!” Clint answered.
“Oh. Oh my. I’m sorry!” Val said. “I get it! I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“They’re so loud,” Steve grumbled. “Don’t they know that we’re right here, trying to sleep?”
“Just ignore them,” you mumbled in reply. “They’ll eventually stop.”
“I am not doing what you think I’m doing!” Clint continued.
“You know what, there's really no need to explain,” Val responded. “I'll wait. You just… finish.”
“No, I’m... I'm coming. I'm coming out.”
You heard the bathroom door open, causing you to bury your face into Steve’s neck. Then Val and Clint continued talking, annoying you greatly. With a grunt you separated from Steve and got out of bed.
“Where are you going?” Steve asked, reaching out for you.
“I’ll be right back,” you replied, kissing his lips lightly before be-lining for the door. You tore it open, causing Val, who had been leaning on it, to struggle with her balance. “What is going on out here?”
“Nothing,” Clint quickly answered.
“He's freaked out cause I caught him playing with little Jimmy and the twins,” Val responded.
“Val! I have a girlfriend.”
“Okay,” Val laughed with a nod.
Clint huffed, storming away to his room and slamming the door.
“This sounds like fun out here,” Steve said, walking up behind you. His phone began ringing. Giving it a quick glance, Steve stuffed it away in his pockets.
“Aren’t you gonna get that?” You asked. “It might be the hospital.”
“It’s not.” He gave you a kiss. “Breakfast?”
Steve walked down the hall, leaving you standing there a bit suspicious. And still annoyed that your roommates had woken you and Steve up.
~~~
Natasha was at the medical center. She was hiding in the stairwell, on the phone.
“No, look, I told you people I’m not coming for a counseling session,” she told whoever was on the other end of the call. “I know all my options… Yeah, uh, well I made my decision, and I made my appointment. I'll be there on the 16th.”
She hung up as Bruce walked up the stairs.
“I paged you last night,” he said, slightly nervous.
“Oh, I wasn’t on call,” Natasha replied.
“That's not why I paged you. You could give me your home number.”
“Um, Banner… I… uh, I gotta go.”
And she quickly went through the stairwell door, leaving Bruce standing there confused.
~~~
Clint and Laura, his new nurse girlfriend, were chatting at one of the nurses station.
“I had a really good time the other night,” Laura flirted.
“Yeah, me too,” Clint responded. “Are you, uh, feeling okay and everything?”
“I’m good. Great, now that I got to see you. Why?”
“Oh, no reason. I’m good too, you know? Really good. You know. But, um, a little itchy.”
“Hey, Clint,” Val greeted, walking up. “Hey, Laura.”
“Hey,” they both replied.
“I’ll see you later, Clint,” Laura said, wiggling her fingers as she walked away.
“Okay, bye,” Clint replied, turning to Val. “Yeah. She’s into me.”
“Way to go, Clint,” Val congratulated with a playful punch to the arm. “She’s cute. So this morning you really weren’t—“
“Anytime you want to apologize…”
“Then what ere you doing in the bathroom for so long?”
“I have to go.”
Clint swiftly left. He went straight to the locker room where he found Scott and Peter alone in there.
“Um… I need to ask you both something,” Clint said, nervously.
“Sure,” Scott answered.
“Depends what it is,” Peter replied.
“I seem to be having this skin thing going on, like a rash, really,” Clint said. “And I think I know what it is, but I can't get close enough to tell for sure.”
“Let’s see it,” Scott said.
“It’s kinda located in an, um, you know, private—“
“You’re a doctor, Clint,” Peter interrupted. “It's called a penis. You have a rash on your penis?”
“I think I can describe it. Um, it's k… red.”
“Look, just come on. Just show us your junk so we can get this over with.”
Clint looked around before slowly untying his scrubs and pulling his pants down. Both Scott and Peter looked, grimacing.
“Ew,” Scott muttered.
“So?” Clint wondered.
“Dude,” Peter laughed, “you’ve got syphilis.”
~~~
While you were were in surgery with Chief Fury (and being watched by Steve in the gallery), Clint had a blood test taken. He was picking it up from the lab at the same time Val was dropping off a patients labs.
“I need this back ASAP,” she told the lab tech.
“What a shocker,” the teach rolled his eyes.
“Hey, what did you get?” Val asked Clint. “Something good?” She quickly snatched the results from his hand. “Syphilis? That’s not surgical. Who has syphilis?” Clint quickly pulled Val into a supply closet, while she looked at the results closer. “You have syphilis?!”
“Shh!” Clint shut the door and turned on the light. “I don’t know how this happened.”
“Of course you do. Gosh, Laura must really be getting around.”
“Laura’s not like that.”
“People are like that, Clint. Apparently all except you.”
“You don’t know. Maybe I’ve been sleeping around. Maybe I got ladies.”
“All while pinning over Y/N?”
“Shut up. Just… what am I gonna do?”
“It's no biggie, couple doses of Penicillin will knock it out.”
“What am I gonna do about Laura?”
“Well, for starters, stop sleeping with her, unless you want that thing to fall off.”
“Okay, that is twice that you have trash-talked the girl that I could one day potentially… well, maybe love.”
“If she gave it to you, you have to tell her.”
“Three.”
“Fine.” Val held up her hands. “She didn't give it to you. She was a virgin when you met. You still have to tell her so she can get tested.”
“Oh, yeah? How am I gonna tell her? ‘Uh, hey, Laura. How you doing? By the way, I got the syph. How about you?’”
“Maybe not quite like that.”
“No, it's good advice, really good advice. Thank you very much.”
~~~
Clint ran into Laura in the stairwell. Laura quickly began making out with Clint.
“About time I got you alone today,” she mumbled against his lips before kissing him again.
“Laura..” Clint gasped, trying to push her away.
“What time is your shift done?”
“Laura—“
“Because mine's over at 8, and I thought maybe you could come over.”
“Laura!” She finally separated slightly. “I need to tell you something.”
“What's wrong? Are you breaking up with me?”
“What? No! Oh, no. Really, no. It's just… Okay, you're the only person that I've been with in a long time. I mean, not unusually long or anything, you know? Just a normal amount of long time. But it wouldn't matter to me if you've been with someone else. Maybe you have? I'm not accusing you of anything or, you know, judging you or handing out scarlet letters or anything, you know? It’s... you're a woman, you know? A very attractive woman. Of course you've been with other men. Not that you've been with a lot of men, it's not like you're a prostitute…”
“A prostitute?”
“No! Not a… not a prostitute. What…? No, the opposite of a prostitute, a lady. You're very ladylike. I mean, you're very bendy, but…”
“Clint, breathe.”
“Okay. It's just… okay, here's the thing. I really like you, Laura. I like you a lot.”
“Well, I like you too.”
She started to make out with him again. Clint got lost in it for a moment before pushing Laura away again.
“I have syphilis,” Clint stated. Laura looked at him, a tad horrified, before running off without saying anything. “Well, that could have gone better.” He softly hit his head against the wall, leaving it there. “Idiot.”
~~~
After your surgery with the Chief, everyone, that was available, was called into a large room. Fury was standing in the front, arms crossed, not looking pleased. Maria Hill was standing near him.
“Three interns, four residents and six nurses on this surgical floor have been diagnosed with syphilis,” Fury stated.
The room made oohing noises. Clint and Laura glanced at each other from across the room.
“Clint and Laura are two of those cases,” Val said quietly from beside you, trying to stifle a laugh.
“What?!” Both you and Natasha whisper shouted.
“Who gave it to who?” You asked.
“Oh, come on, Y/N,” Natasha said. “Clint doesn’t get around."
“There are over 70,000 new cases every year,” Maria explained to everyone. “Undiagnosed, syphilis can lead to blindness, insanity and death.”
“If you are having unprotected sex with another member of the staff, get tested,” Fury ordered. Bruce and Natasha made eye contact. “This is not a request.” Everyone laughed. “Maria will now give you a safe-sex demonstration.” Laughing continued as Maria pulled out a banana and a condom.
"When the time is right, and, gentlemen, you'll all know when that time is, carefully open the condom packet and roll it onto the banana,” Maria said.
As you listened, you watched Steve come in and whisper something the Chief. You were concerned as Steve had been a little distant today.
“Open communication is essential to a healthy relationship,” Maria continued. “In a responsible relationship…”
“Poor Clint,” you whispered to Natasha.
“Yeah,” Natasha agreed. “You know, I think he really likes Typhoid Mary.”
"Well, not many budding relationships survive a good dose of VD.”
“Yeah.”
“When the banana is finished,” you turned back in to Dr. Hill, “gently peel off the condom and dispose of it properly. With every fresh banana, always use a fresh condom.”
“Do you and Steve…?” Natasha wondered.
“Condoms, all the way,” you responded. “You have anyone you—“
“No,” Natasha shook her head quickly. “Not at all.”
~~~
Steve paged you not long after the meeting. You hated to admit it, but you were excited that he needed you. You found him in a small room reading scans.
“You paged?” You questioned, trying to hold back an excited smile.
"Yeah, I need you to help me out on something for the Chief,” he replied. “Can you keep a secret?”
“Better than you think.”
He moved slightly and pointed to the brain scans. “Fury has a small tumor pressing against his optic nerve. We need to operate, but he wants it on the down low.”
“When are you operating?”
“Tonight, when less people are in the hospital.”
“And here I thought we were going to be able to have a date night.”
“We can. Just later.” He gave you a small smile. “Can you take to Dr. Gamora? Get her on board?”
“I can try.”
“And get a few others as well. Close to the Chief.”
~~~
After checking on your patients, you found those close to the Chief, asking if they could assist. They all readily agreed. You then went searching for Gamora. You found her heading down a hallway.
“Gamora,” you called. “Can I talk to you?”
“Make it quick, L/N,” she responded.
“Dr. Rogers and the Chief need your help. But they’ve asked that you not tell anyone.”
“What is it?”
“Fury has a small tumor on his optic nerve, Rogers needs to operate. They were wondering if you could assist?”
“Count on it.”
Steve then came jogging up. “How goes our special super secret silent sunset surgery?” He wondered, a bit cheerfully. “I've been practicing that.”
“You have too much time on your hands,” Gamora stated, rolling her rolls slightly. “Uh, tell the chief I'll be there. Just let me know when and where. I'm in.”
“Okay,” you nodded and then Gamora left. You turned to face Steve. “Are you nervous?”
“It's a complicated surgery,” Steve answered. “I make one mistake, I end a fellow surgeon's career, my mentor's career. Oh, no, I'm not nervous.”
“So just for the record…”
“Mm-hmm.”
“You’d tell me if I needed to get tested, right?”
“You think I have syphilis?”
“No, I don't. It's just… we never made any rules or anything. I mean, we never said, "We have rules," and I wouldn't hold it against you.”
“When would I have time to go out and get syphilis? You're a handful enough as it is, and besides, we're like, practically a condom ad.”
“But no more glow-in-the-dark ones.” You smirked.
“You see? There's nothing to worry about. Maybe we should, you know make some rules, I mean.”
“We should.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
“Just for the record…”
“Uh-huh?”
“I like the glow-in-the-dark ones.”
“I bet you do.”
~~~
Val and Natasha paged you to the abandoned hallway you all frequented, wanting to talk to you about something.
“You guys want to perform an unauthorized autopsy?” You repeated.
“I know you, Natasha,” Val said. “You do not want to be known as the new 007. An autopsy clears your name.”
“Nat, no.”
“What about Franklin's wife? You saw the way she was looking at me. She wants the autopsy. She just didn't want to fight with her daughter. She looked so sad. Ok, Natasha Romanoff, license to kill.”
“Okay, I’m in,” Natasha agreed.
“I am so not involved in this,” you said.
“Y/N, this is fight club. Nobody talks about it.”
“Fine.”
“We have to do it when Gamora’s not around.”
“Gamora’s always around,” Val complained. “She's everywhere and knows everything.”
“Well, we have to take our chances.”
"Gamora's got something tonight from 7 to 11,” you told them. “You two will be the last thing she's worried about.”
“How do you know that?” / “What kind of something?”
“Oh, I can’t tell you that. It’s fight club, too."
~~~
You taped the do not enter signs on all the OR doors. Steve had made sure that the OR chosen didn’t have a gallery in it. Steve let you stand on his one side, able to see everything. It was amazing to watch had occasionally help.
“Okay, I've sutured the drain in place,” Steve stated, finishing up the surgery. “The staples look fine. Alright, we're done here. Dr. Gamora, you want to wrap him?”
“I got it,” Gamora replied.
“Nice work, everybody. Nicely done.” Steve walked into the scrub room.
“Do you think the optic nerve is damaged?” You asked Gamora.
“If it is when he wakes up, he’ll—“
“He’ll be blind? For how long?”
“Forever. Page Valkyrie and Romanoff. Tell them I want them covering your patients. I need you to stay and monitor the Chief.”
“Val and Nat are, um… I think they’re already swamped.”
“With what?”
“Labs. They had to check on some labs.”
“Oh, you are lying. I know you’re lying. You know how I know? Cause you’re a bad liar! I hate a bad liar.” Gamora turned to the person next to her. “Take over for me. I know exactly where they are.”
~~~
You were outside of Fury’s room, filling out his chart, when Steve walked up.
“How is he?” Steve asked.
“He’s still asleep, but nothing seems to be wrong just yet,” you replied. “How are you?”
“Good,” he sighed, glancing into Fury’s room before looking down at you. “How are you?”
“Tired. Ready to go home and cuddle.”
“Me too.” He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to your forehead, brushing his fingers down your cheek. “Me too.”
Unbeknownst to the both of you, Fury woke up just in time to see that term of endearment. After another soft kiss to your forehead, Steve left and you went in to check on Fury.
“Y/N,” Fury said in a reprimanding tone. “He’s an attending. You’re an intern.”
“You saw us?” You questioned. “You can see.”
“I'm gonna tell you what your parents would say if they were here. You're making a mistake, a big one.”
“You know my parents? You know who I am?”
“Always have. I was close friends with them. I understood the name change. But this,” he motioned his hand around, “I do not understand. And it needs to stop. For more reasons than you know.”
~~~
All you interns were in locker room, getting ready to go home, when Laura entered. Clint immediately noticed as she came up to him.
“Hey,” he greeted. “Um, about before—“
“Clint, I want you to understand, when we started dating, I was already kind of seeing someone,” Laura said. “I didn't know how much I'd like you, and when I realized, I broke it off with the other guy—“
“Other guy? Who’s the other guy?” Laura looked over at Peter. “You and Peter? You and Peter?!” Clint turned and began attacking Peter. “You gave me syphilis?!”
“Clint!” You, Val, Natasha, and Laura exclaimed, pulling him off Peter.
“I don’t even feel back,” Peter said. “Cause the sex was—“ Clint attacked him again, causing the four of you to separate the two once again.
“Clint, you’re all ready,” Val stated. “Let’s go home.” She dragged him out of the locker room.
~~~
Finally, you got to the lobby. Steve was already there, sitting, waiting for you.
“Long day?” He wondered, studying you.
“Yeah,” you agreed.
“Somewhere out there is a steak with your name on it,” he said, standing up, “and maybe a bottle of wine.”
“This is why I keep you around.”
“So we need to talk.”
“Wine first, talk later.”
“You trying to, uh, get me drunk so you can take advantage of me?”
“I think I like this rules thing.”
“Me too.”
Steve grabbed your hand, staring at you as you both started for the door. When he turned to look at the door, he froze, stopping you two in place. His eyes went wide, which worried you. You looked to see what he was looking at. Walking towards you was this beautiful brown haired woman, with fiery red lipstick.
“Y/N, I am so sorry,” Steve whispered. The woman walked all the way over to them. “Peggy. What are you doing here?”
“Well, you'd know if you'd bothered to return any one of my phone calls,” the woman responded, surprising you with a British accent. She turned to you, overing you her hand. “Hi. I’m Margaret Rogers.” You shook her hand.
“Rogers?” You repeated, confused.
“And you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband.”
