Fight the Darkness Pt. 5

Summary: The darkness awakens.

Gaius stared at her for a long time after she told him the truth. He remained standing across from her, his brow furrowed as he frowned. “You had no control over it? None at all?”

Amy shook her head, wringing her hands. “It just washed over me. I couldn’t stop if I tried. And that’s how it feels right now.”

The possibility of one day losing complete control over her body scared her. She had been the only one who could fight Rheya’s control before, and now she was the only one who could still be influenced by the power. It was strangely comical.

“Maybe you should have stayed with them. They would be more help than I am.” Gaius finally strolled across the room to take a seat beside her. He took her hand in his and sighed. “Have you spoken to anyone since you left?”

She chewed on her bottom lip, staring at their intertwined fingers. “Adrian called me when I went for my walk. He knows that I’m alive, at least.”

If she’d been told twenty-five years earlier that this was where her life was headed, Amy would have laughed. Now, all she wanted to do was scream. The feeling inside her reminded her of when she’d been younger, when she could tell she was getting sick. It felt like an illness slowly killing her from the inside out.

“I’m scared.” For the first time since she’d felt the power growing stronger, she admitted the truth. “I don’t know how to control it.”

Had it been a mistake to leave New York?

Adrian and Kamilah had been the best prepared to deal with her outbursts. Even Lily was able to talk her through her flashbacks. But now she wasn’t sure how to deal with them.

“You can fight it. I know that you’re strong enough.” Gaius squeezed her hand, shifting closer to her. “We’ll get through this together. You said you wanted to go to Mydiea, so we can do that. I’m here.”

Warmth spread throughout her body at his words. All she needed was to know that someone would be there for her, that they wouldn’t view her as a monster for the horrible things she had done. For the horrible things she feared she would still do if she didn’t find a way to control the desire for darkness.

“Thank you,” Amy whispered, feeling normal again for the first time in days.

Instead of answering, Gaius squeezed her hand again. They sat in silence for a while.

“We can continue to talk if it helps.” Gaius looked a bit uncomfortable at the idea of a longer conversation, but Amy knew it might be what she needed.

She smiled, casting her gaze to the pot of dead flowers again. The smile faltered when she remembered the way she had behaved earlier. Instead of trying to fight the power, she had decided to embrace it, and she knew that was dangerous. “You know, you’re a good listener.”

He laughed, turning his head to look at her. “I’m not so sure about that. It takes a lot of patience to deal with people. Perhaps I’ve just become a very convincing actor.”

“You can drop the whole bad guy act. We’ve established that it’s not who you really are. I know you better than that.”

With a sigh, Gaius’ shoulders fell. “Some days I still fear that I’ll lose any of the redeeming qualities I’ve gained over the years. Thousands of years of unspeakable horrors tends to tarnish one’s reputation.”

Amy knew what he meant. To this day, her friends still questioned her on her decision to spare his life in that tomb. It was the reason why he was the first one she thought to run to after killing that human. Only Gaius could understand the full extent of Rheya’s influence. Only Gaius knew how it felt to not be yourself for so long you began to question if maybe the darkness was your true self.

“We have all the time in the world to become better,” Amy said, closing her eyes as she remembered the fear in the young man’s eyes before she pounced. “All we can do is pray that it’s enough.”

Gaius’ laugh sounded bitter. “You can redeem yourself. It was an accident. You didn’t mean to kill the human.”

“And you weren’t completely yourself when you did all those horrible things.” She didn’t look away when his eyes met hers, surprise written in his features. “We can play this game all day if you want. I know that you still had some agency in your actions, but it was because Rheya blocked your ability to feel empathy. Stop trying to talk me out of having feelings for you, Gaius. That’s not how it works.”

“I don’t deserve you,” he whispered, and she could tell by looking in his eyes that he was remembering the day he killed her. “You deserve so much better.”

Amy reached out to touch his face. For a moment, all her troubles faded away.

When she leaned in, she feared he would pull away. But Gaius remained in place, his eyes closing when their faces were a few inches apart. A smile tugged at Amy’s lips and she closed the distance between them. The kisses reminded her of the first night they’d spent together in the abandoned house. She let go of his hand to cup his face in her hands, tracing his lower lip with her tongue as the kiss grew more desperate.

Amy pulled away for a brief moment, pushing Gaius back when he tried to tug her back to him. He frowned, looking at her with a silent question lingering in his eyes. “You deserve happiness,” she said, wishing she could take away the memories of thousands of years in mental captivity. “You’ve already redeemed yourself in my eyes.”

“What possessed you to kiss me that night?” She could tell he’d been dying to ask that question for over two decades.

She chewed on her bottom lip, trying to think of a logical way to explain her emotions. “The conversation we had on that boat changed the way I thought about you. Before that, I hated you. I wanted you dead, even if you did want to help us defeat Rheya.” Amy paused, a part of her ashamed to admit the way she had once felt. She took a deep breath and continued. “But you changed my mind. And I guess I realized that sometimes a second chance is what someone truly deserves, no matter how shitty their actions in the past might have been. We all make mistakes. We all do things we aren’t proud of.”

Gaius kept quiet when she took a moment to think of what else could be said.

“And even though the things you did were especially shitty,” she mumbled, “even you deserved forgiveness. Actions speak louder than words, and you showed that you really were trying to change for the better. I admire someone who can own up to their mistakes. So,” she shrugged, taking his hands in hers again, “I forgave you on that boat. And I slept with you because I thought I was going to die fighting Rheya and a part of me was always attracted to you. Against my better judgement.”

He seemed to be at a loss for words, studying her face, as if maybe he still believed it was all a lie. As if maybe she really didn’t have feelings for him that were stronger than anything she’d ever felt before.

“I haven’t the slightest clue how to respond to that.”

Amy couldn’t stop herself from laughing, leaning forward to kiss him again. “You don’t need to respond. Just know that I really do care about you. I’m not the type of person to trek across Europe looking for someone I don’t have feelings for.”

“I guess I should consider myself lucky, then.” He noticed her looking at his new clothes again and sighed, rolling his eyes. “You are the one who picked this outfit out, so you have no one to blame but yourself if you do not like it.”

“When did I ever give any indication that I don’t like it?” She shrugged out of her jacket, letting it fall to the floor before she shifted to straddle his lap. “I love the new look. Maybe we should get you a haircut next.”

Gaius shook his head, his hands resting on her hips. His expression grew serious again. “How are you feeling now?”

Amy hummed under her breath, leaning down to kiss his neck. “Perfectly fine.” She brushed her lips across the smooth skin, smiling when she heard him take a sharp breath. “Talking really helped.”

“Have you decided what the next step in our plan is?” He stumbled over his words as she slid her hands under his shirt and pulled it over his head.

“We find an airport and we go to Greece. It shouldn’t take us too long to get to Mydiea from there.” She pulled back, remembering what had happened the last time she was on that island. “There won’t be much left when we arrive. Xenocrates destroyed everything. The Tree of Eternal Life is gone, but maybe there’s something else there that can help.”

Gaius didn’t look convinced. “If this ends in our deaths, I will not be pleased.”

Amy chuckled and shook her head, leaning down to kiss him again. They could worry about their possible dooms later. Right now, she wanted to forget about the events of the past twelve hours.

Bright headlights flashed in her mind, and Amy shut her eyes tighter, trying her best to ignore memories of the night before as she kissed Gaius harder. He rolled over, pushing her further up the bed as he reached for the hem of her shirt.

“I have no clue why you would ever choose me,” he mumbled against her neck as he trailed kisses down her chest, looking up at her when he reached the waistband of her jeans.

She let out a quiet sigh, watching as he undid the button and pulled the zipper down before sliding her jeans off. “Stop wondering and just accept it already.” His scowl made her laugh.

The amusement faded when his attention returned to between her legs as he tugged her panties to the side and began to tease her with his fingers, glancing up at her before he started to pump a finger in and out. A moan slipped past her lips when he added another and began to increase his pace.

Amy bit her lip, bunching the sheets in her fists as Gaius pulled back and slid her underwear down her legs, tossing them over his shoulder before he began to kiss up her thighs. She tangled her hands in his hair, breathing heavily as she watched him make his way up. Finally, he focused between her legs, wrapping his arms around them to pull them farther apart. With a sigh, her head fell back against the pillows, her back arching off the mattress with each flick of his tongue. He held her down as her gasps filled the room.

Just as she felt that she was about to climax, he pulled away, looking up at her again, his hair falling over his eyes. A smirk tugged at his lips when she pushed the strands back. “Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?”

It hadn’t seemed possible to ever want him more than she already did, but somehow, in this moment, it was. Every inch of her body ached for him. The thought of spending one second longer without him inside her was almost too much to bear. “I don’t believe you have,” she said, her fingers digging into the small of his back when he moved and started to kiss back up her body, pausing long enough to unclasp her bra.

“You’re beautiful.” Gaius helped her when she tried to push his pants down, both of them stopping for a moment to look each other in the eye once they were undressed.

In that moment, three words echoed in her mind. But she knew it was too soon to say it. And even if she did, the chances of him believing her or saying it back were incredibly slim. The past few days weren’t enough time for a confession that held that much weight.

So, she chose to express her feelings through her actions instead. Amy held onto Gaius as he moved slow, the urgency they’d had the past few days gone. This was real. They were able to be together without having to worry about the judgement of others.

Minutes felt like seconds, and hours felt like minutes inside that hotel room. Sweat laced their bodies as they moved together. He knew all the right ways to touch her, thousands of years of experience leaving her speechless. No one could ever compare. It had been one of the biggest reasons she’d spent decades lusting after him, remembering the way he’d made her feel that night on the boat. How she had almost cried out loud enough to let everyone else know that they had definitely done more than had a simple conversation.

Amy took Gaius’ face in her hands and pulled him into another kiss, moaning as he pulled out halfway and thrust back in. His lips left hers to explore her body, another quiet gasp slipping past her lips when he took her nipple into his mouth and gently sucked. She wrapped her legs around his waist, forgetting for one blissful afternoon that the journey ahead would likely leave little room for moments like this.

When they finally finished, they remained entangled in the middle of the bed, listening to the sounds of the distant traffic as the sun began to set outside. She rested her head on his chest, wishing that afternoons spent like this would never end.

“Where should we go after Mydiea?” Amy refused to believe that the island would be the last place they ever went.

Gaius was quiet for a moment. He ran a finger along her spine, his attention fixed on Jax’s katana in the corner of the room. “I always wanted to return to Russia one day. It’s been centuries since I visited.”

She smiled, cuddling up closer to him. “What’s it like? I’ve never been.”

“You can see it for yourself once we destroy the darkness.”

Amy frowned, staring at the wall across the room. “What if we can’t?” she whispered, fearing that whatever was growing inside her knew no end.

“We will.” Gaius pulled her closer, brushing some hair out of her face. “I need to believe that things will end well. Otherwise, I—”

“You what?”

He sighed, staring down at her. After she figured that he wouldn’t look away, she finally dared to return the stare. “I don’t want to imagine a world where the power overwhelms you. It won’t happen.”

“If I become like Rheya—”

“You will not become like Rheya. She had no good left in her. You do.” Gaius tightened his arms around her, as if a part of him feared she would vanish if he let go. “There was no saving her.”

Amy bit her lip, knowing it was finally time to have a serious discussion about their mission. “But she wasn’t always that way. I wasn’t always fighting this power. What if there’s no escape from it? In the opera house, I thought that it was gone for good. I thought that—” She paused, inhaling sharply when she remembered how it felt when the power left her. That was supposed to be the end of it. “Gaius.” Fear crept into her veins, the iciness of it making her shiver. “What if the only way to stop it is to kill me?”

A different kind of darkness swept over his face at her words. “I will not have you speak like that. You are the Bloodkeeper. That has to have a role in this. Maybe you can learn to control it. You were able to fight against Rheya’s control before, you can do it again. It will not win.”

But she knew that it was wishful thinking. The moment she had summoned the power to try and bring those flowers to life, she had sealed her fate. Awakening that kind of power would have consequences. For twenty-five years, it had lain dormant, awaiting the perfect moment to return. And she had willingly called to it.

Amy remained silent, closing her eyes when she realized that the conversation was going nowhere. Eventually, Gaius relaxed beside her. She could feel the tension leave his body as he fell asleep. The exhaustion from fighting for so long was beginning to get to her, and she gladly accepted the sleep that called to her after several minutes of silence.

Even in her dreams, she could not escape the darkness.

“Amy?” Jax appeared before her, his lips turned down in a frown as he looked around. “What happened? How am I here?”

The laugh that came from her shook the ground. Amy grinned maniacally, marvelling at the sight before her. “I did it. I brought you back.”

This time, he did not crumble to ash. He remained, the horror on his face not causing her the least concern. Everyone had said it couldn’t be done, and they had all been wrong. She had done it. She had brought Jax Matsuo back from the dead.

“I defeated Rheya,” she said, taking a step toward her friend. “It’s been twenty-five years, but you’re here now. You’re back.” Amy reached for Jax, but he stumbled back.

“What? I don’t understand. Amy, where are we?” He took in the destruction all around them, his fear sending waves in the air.

Every beating heart that remained on the earth pounded in her ears. The planet bended to her will, screams of agony creating a symphony of her own making. Somewhere among the rubble, she knew her friends were buried. No worries. She could bring them back too. She could fix this entire mess now that Jax was back.

“We’re in New York, obviously.” She smiled, and Jax recoiled further. Amy frowned, drawing in more power when she felt it call to her. “A simple thank you would suffice. I did this all for you.”

Jax shook his head, taking in the toppled buildings around them. “I must be dreaming. There’s no way—”

“Enough.” The moment she spoke, his words came to a halt.

Someone started to scream. Amy turned toward the noise, silencing the voice with a mere thought. No one could understand her. She had been a fool to think that Jax would be any different. Not Adrian, or Kamliah, or Lily had understood. Not even Gaius had been there for her when she needed him most.

And now they were all dead.

“I thought you might be grateful,” Amy said with a sigh, anger coursing through her when the truth finally dawned on her.

They did not care.

They’d never understand the power. The potential. The endless possibilities. She had always been alone.

“It really is a pity.” Amy turned away from Jax, taking a deep breath as she stood to her full height. “All of this was for nothing.”

“Amy, wait, you—” But before Jax could finish, he crumbled back into ash with a flick of her wrist.

She closed her eyes, wishing she was still capable of tears. When none came, she opened her eyes once more, casting her gaze to the horizon.

The world was in ruin. Where New York had once stood, there was now little more than destruction.

It was nothing some hard work couldn’t fix.

Something stirred deep inside her, and she took comfort in the presence. Perhaps she wasn’t completely alone, after all. Perhaps a part of Rheya lived on within her.

And at least she understood.

She knew that it was crazy, that the chances of it working weren’t good, but she needed someone by her side who wouldn’t try to stop her. Someone who she now understood. They were on the same side now. It would be perfect.

“Come to me,” she whispered, summoning more power. More strength.

A body started to take shape in front of her, the loneliness slowly fading as she created her ancestor anew. This time, she would be in control. This time, they would do things her way. The better way.

Rheya’s eyes were wide when she realized what had just happened.

Together, they would build a new world. A better world. Amy finally understood.

Together, they would be unstoppable.

She held a hand out, no longer feeling hatred for the First vampire, but instead understanding. Affection. With a grin, she helped Rheya to her feet, ready to begin a new era.

Amy awoke with a gasp, nearly falling out of the bed as she sat up. She grabbed the sheets to cover herself when she realized she was still naked. Gaius was sound asleep beside her, unaware of the nightmare she had just experienced.

Even worse, she had felt good. The hunger for that power remained.

Outside, the sun had already set. They were supposed to be leaving already.

Hunger gnawed at her stomach, and Amy knew she needed to feed again soon before she lost control the way she had in New York. Her need to feed had grown in the past two weeks, with the thirst for blood arising sometimes within hours.

Trying not to awaken Gaius, she slid out of the bed, grabbing her clothes from the floor while she walked across the room toward her backpack. There was only one bag of blood left. With a sigh, she set it back down, knowing that it wouldn’t be enough.

The hunger wasn’t too bad yet. Maybe she could hold out for another few hours. But even if she could do that, what would she do once they boarded the plane? It would likely take at least four hours for them to fly from Ireland to Greece, and that wasn’t including the time it would take for them to reach a city, but their tickets, and wait for takeoff.

She needed to feed. Now.

Amy chewed on her bottom lip, wondering how long it would take her to find a human willing to let her feed on them. She wasn’t even sure how things worked here when it came to human and vampire interactions. The world knew about them now, but some countries had been less open to the idea.

There had to be somewhere for her to feed. Almost every country she had visited since defeating Rheya had places for vampires to feed on willing humans.

Gaius was still sleeping as she got dressed, his hair falling over his brow. He rolled onto his side, away from her, while she watched from the doorway. If she left now, she could get back before he’d ever noticed she was gone. All she needed was some blood to keep her satisfied until they got to Greece. Just enough to last her through the next twelve hours.

Before she could change her mind, Amy slipped out of the room. She walked at a hurried pace through the mostly empty streets, scanning the shops for any sign of a place for her to feed.

“You lost?” The voice echoed across the park, the Irish accent thick. “Need any help?”

Amy remembered what had happened the last time she accepted help from a stranger. “No, I’m fine. I just need to—”

Oh no. The same urge that had overwhelmed her in New York started to claw its way up. She started to shake, trying her best to ignore the bloodlust that shouldn’t be a problem anymore. It had only been a little more than twelve hours since she last fed. Why was she so hungry again?

A warm hand grabbed her arm, dragging her away from the watchful gaze of the man who’d been following her. “There you are. Come on, everyone’s waiting for us!” The young woman had dirty blonde hair and emerald green eyes. She smiled at Amy, walking further away from the persistent man.

Once they were out of sight, the woman released her arm. Amy tried to ignore the desire to sink her fangs into the stranger’s neck. “Thank you,” she said, clearing her throat as the scent of fresh blood flooded her senses. “I appreciate it.”

“It was no problem. Us girls have to look out for each other, right?” Her smile was warm and inviting, just like Seth’s had been.

“Right,” Amy said, tilting her head to the side as she studied the woman who couldn’t be any older than thirty. “Of course we do.” She felt her lips turn up in a smile, the energy that was so close to her hard to resist.

The life force trapped within that body enticed her. She remembered how alive she had felt in the car with Seth the night before, and wished more than anything to feel it again.

“Well, I should probably get going now. My friends are waiting for me.” Suddenly, the woman looked uncomfortable. It was enough to momentarily bring Amy back to reality.

“Ah, yeah, I guess so. Thanks again.” She turned and hurried away, not daring to slow until the kind stranger’s pounding heart faded from her ears. “Get a grip,” Amy said to herself through gritted teeth, trying to focus.

Focus. Find somewhere to feed. Focus. Find somewhere to feed.

She kept repeating the same two phrases until the rest of the world was drowned out by her thoughts. Now was not the time to lose control again.

“What’s a pretty little thing like you doing alone in the dark?” The voice was recognizable.

Amy stopped in her tracks, the hunger too great to ignore any longer.

No, she had to keep moving. There was a place for her to feed safely around here somewhere. All she had to do was keep. Moving.

“I can help you, darling.” The man was persistent.

“Please, leave me alone. I don’t need any help.” Amy tried to walk faster, but the man grabbed her wrist.

Without hesitation, she whirled to face him, hearing the distinct snap as she ripped his hand away from her. He screamed, cursing at her as he cradled the broken wrist.

“You bitch!” His pained, furious yells drew the attention of more people.

Amy could feel their energy, now stronger than ever. “I’m sorry,” she cried out, stepping backward. She had a feeling the people who had emerged from the shadows would not be on her side when she saw the way they walked toward the man.

“I didn’t mean it, I just—” But the rest of her sentence was silenced by the all too familiar presence that filled her mind.

He deserves it. All of them deserve it. Who are they to question you? To dare to touch you. Pathetic. Every last one of them.

“No! Get out of my head!” Her voice shook the earth, and she didn’t need to see the fear written on the men’s faces to know that her eyes were glowing.

Amy tried to fight back, to force herself to turn and run back to Gaius, but she found that she was unable to move. Her feet remained planted on the spot, the anger and frustration rushing to the surface.

The crowd had snapped out of their initial shock, the fear replaced with disgust as they made their way toward her.

“Vampire!”

“Monster!”

“Demon!”

Every word only served to make her feel worse, and Amy fell to the ground, trying to curl into a ball and disappear as the humans pressed in around her. She shut her eyes and covered her head with her hands, screaming as she came to the realization that this was the end. She would die in this empty street, turned to ash, and Gaius would never know where she had gone.

A voice whispered inside her head that it was time. Amy shook her head, the hot tears burning her eyes as she tried to block it out. The noise all around her and within was deafening.

“ENOUGH.”

What came next was beyond words. Eyes still closed, she felt the energy and power rush into her, the angry shouts replaced by screams of agony. Amy rocked back and forth, whispering meaningless reassurances to herself until the horrible sounds ceased. As the nightmare ended, so too did her hunger.

There was a metallic smell that hung in the air. It felt as though she had fallen into a pool of something sticky, warm, and thick. Amy dreaded the moment when she would open her eyes, knowing that the sight that lay before her would haunt her for the rest of her life.

Still, if she remained here, more people were sure to come.

She had no food in her stomach, but Amy still gagged when she opened her eyes and saw the carnage before her. There had been no more than half a dozen men, but the mess made it look far worse. Their corpses were little more than shriveled husks, the blood that once filled their bodies now all over the street and herself.

It shouldn’t be possible. She had done everything she could to avoid this exact outcome.

Except…that wasn’t entirely true. No matter how much she wanted to deny it, she had called to the darkness when all hope seemed lost. It was all her fault.

“Shit,” Amy muttered under her breath, her laugh devoid of humor as she rose to her feet and took in what remained of the men. “Shit. Fuck. Dammit.” She turned and ran, not stopping until the hotel appeared.

Someone saw her and started to scream. They ran when she looked over and frowned.

So much for an inconspicuous escape.

Mercifully, Gaius was still asleep when she entered the room. Amy barely glanced at him as she walked to the bathroom, stepping into the shower without bothering to strip off her clothes. There could be no mess when he awoke. She had to clean up.

The water ran pink, the gore and horror washing down the drain, never to be spoken of. Gaius could not know. If he were to find out what she had done, there was no telling what he would do.

“Amy?” He knocked on the door, and she heard him try to open it. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” And, somehow, it was not a lie.

She fought back a smile as she washed the blood off, wondering if she could do more than simply walk in the sun now. The power flowed through her, her hunger quenched more than ever before.

Amy felt alive. Excited. Powerful. But, most importantly, she felt…free

BUYING A DREAM, LUCILLE BALL’S GOAL

December 23, 1945

Below is an article by Philip K. Scheuer in the Los Angeles Times published on December 23, 1945, and reprinted verbatim. Except for the above headshot, photographs were added for editorial enhancement.

Philip K. Scheuer wrote about film for the Los Angeles Times from the 1920s until 1967.

Bold Italics indicate quotes by Lucille Ball. Footnotes (bolded numbers in parentheses) are added for historical perspective. Words in [brackets] are foul language used by Ball, but not published by the Times.

It was the first day of shooting on "The Dark Corner." Lucille Ball, playing secretary to Mark Stevens, sat at a typewriter, typing. The more-observant noted, with surprise, that she used the touch system. When Director Henry Hathaway called lunch, an alert member of the crew salvaged what Mark Stevens' secretary had written.

"Dear Mr. Hathaway," it read, "If you knew how [god damned] nervous I was today you wouldn't dare shoot the picture and you would call the whole thing off and then you wou--- " The line ended abruptly, and Miss Ball was off on a new tack.

"LUCY IS A SISSY," she snapped, three times.

First-Day Jitters

When she got back from lunch, the sheet of paper was again in her typewriter. With grateful surprise Miss Ball read "Dear Lucy: Would it help you to know that I'm nervous as hell myself?" The postscript was signed, "Love, H.H."

First-day jitters are common in Hollywood, even with hard-shelled veterans like Hathaway. To Lucille Ball, beginning her debut as a 20th Century Fox star, it must have been an occasion in which triumph was not unmixed with her trepidation.

More than a decade earlier, a Goldwyn Girl on loan, she had worked at the same studio in a "Bottoms Up" (1) number for $75 a week. Her pre-picture deal for "The Dark Corner", is reliably reported to call for a flat payment of $75,000.

Independence Earned

It is quite a come-up for a girl whose occupations are listed in prosaic type as “showgirl, soda jerker, stenographer, fashion and commercial model, extra, stock girl." Lucille earned her independence the hard way; but there is no evidence that the experience embittered her or caused her, in turn, to slap people around. She is honest, she is blunt, and she can talk tough - but no more so than when she was dialing Central Casting and being answered, “Nothing today."

Besides 20th, both R.K.O. and M.G.M., two of her alma maters, are begging her to sign contracts. "But frankly," she said, "I don't care when I do another picture. Desi is out of the Army and I want to be with him and I want to have a baby. In fact, twins."

Double Nursery

Desi is her husband, Desi Arnaz; they have been married five, years, more than three of which he spent in service. His wife is so sure it will be twins that she is planning a double nursery. Seems it runs in the family her grandmother was one of five sets. Lucille has even predicted their sexes: the boy will be Desi Jr. and the girl Susan (2) for good friend Susan Peters. She's buying that dream.

Besides the double nursery, the Arnazes are mapping other concessions to a rosy future: an enlarged playroom for their Northridge ranch, a helicopter (the landing field is already laid out); a modern electric kitchen in which Desi can indulge his penchant for Cuban dishes, and Lucille hers for American; and so I was calmly assured a PT boat "for going fishing." I had a quick mental picture of the Arnaz family dashing about spearing the finny tribe, but said nothing. It's none of my business.

Excellent Portrayal

Lucille Ball has given one fine, true performance on the screen. That was in Damon Runyon's "The Big Street" in 1942. It was a distinctive tragicomedy about the blind devotion of a busboy (Henry Fonda) to a selfish, shallow showgirl who is crippled in a fall and Miss Ball gave it everything she had. Playing the part largely in a wheelchair must have had a special meaning to her, for Lucille was herself injured in an auto accident and told she would never walk again. By gritting her teeth and persevering, she was on her feet again in three years and four months.

Laughton's Advice

"I've never had another part like that," she admitted. "It was Charles Laughton who advised me, 'If you're going to play a [bitch], play one!' and I did." She brightened. "In spite of his illness, Mr. Runyon has told friends he is writing another story for me. I only hope I will get the chance to play it!" (3) Last seen as the wisecracking companion of Keenan Wynn in "Without Love," Lucille still has three unreleased pictures at Metro. They are "Ziegfeld Follies," "Easy to Wed" and “Time for Two." (4) That should hold people for a while, she thinks; meanwhile there's Desi, and fun.

(1) In the Fox film "Bottoms Up" (1934) Lucille Ball was a Goldwyn Girl in the number "Waitin' at the Gate for Katy".

(2) Lucille Ball never had twins. Her second child was indeed a girl, but named Lucie (aka Little Lucy) not Susan. Susan Peters (1921-52) was a film, stage, and television actress who appeared in over twenty films over the course of her decade-long career. In January 1945 she was critically injured in a hunting accident that left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair. This is likely why Lucille wanted to name her daughter after her. She died in 1952 at age 31, just 15 month after the birth of Lucie Arnaz.

(3) Lucille Ball did indeed do another Damon Runyon story, “Sorrowful Jones” in 1949, but it was not written expressly for Lucy, but based on his 1932 story “Little Miss Marker,” which had previously been filmed in 1934. Damon Runyon died a year after this article was published, in December 1946.

(4) MGM’s “Time for Two” was renamed “Two Smart People” and premiered June 4, 1946. It co-starred John Hodiak and Lloyd Nolan.

I began writing Papers and Sleuthers just after OUAT 3B aired.

I was already frustrated after the show severely underused the Peter Pan characters and ultimately threw them away. I knew I wanted to write something, but I couldn’t grasp just what.

Then one day, I was dozing in the back seat of my aunt’s car and saw a missing poster for a dalmatian, and my humble little fic was born.

By season 4, I was starting college and was hit with a terrifying apprehension for the future to the point where I considered abandoning writing altogether.

While I did put a pin in several stories, I never could turn away from P&S. I don’t really know why; maybe because I was starving for more fics with these characters; maybe I was hiding from my problems in the ones of these characters.

I conceived Revenge and Fireflies while I was studying for a French exam; popped out the end of Operation: Spotless during my first Christmas break; cried through Wendy’s fight with Edward and her father in Reporters Down, and after a year and a half long hiatus, I finally got to write Pan’s more human side when he reconnected with Belle in The Girl with Blue Eyes

Now, my 23, freshly graduated from college, and once again I’m that scared writer-wanna-be who must beg their selves to function.

P&S has been with me through a portion of my life when I was ecstatic with the idea of the future and loathed it at the same time.

I can’t end it—I just can’t. It’s in my bones. A shitty fic conceived from a shitty show. But I want to keep it going for as long as possible. As long as I keep going. Even if it takes years.

Anyway, here’s Papers and Sleuthers.

Yesterday

Wendy was furious with him, and Pan was enjoying the shit out of it.

Toying with Wendy’s sanity was becoming a much-enjoyed habit for Pan, he concluded. He kept her disgusted with him enough that she kept her distance—kept her self safe from the filth of him—but just close enough that he could revel in her misery.

He had to think of his self, didn’t he?

But his reveling was cut short by the ringing of his cell phone.

Duty calls. Probably Glass calling to bitch about putting an unapproved story in the morning paper.

Just another day in Storybrooke.

But when he saw the name on the screen, he felt a twinge of panic.

Just a twinge—Peter Pan was always collected—except when he wasn’t.

Wendy began yelling at him again as he answered, and between her yelling and the person on the phone, he couldn’t make out a word anyone was saying.

Thus he threw off his bedcovers to send Wendy into a temporary state of shock, smothering a bark of laughter at her pink face. From the corner of his eye he could see August—who for some damn reason had helped himself to his coffee AND favorite mug.

“Alright, repeat that.” Pan asserted with a slight smirk.

“Pan this is bad this is so bad oh my god this is so bad!”

“Astrid, slow down.” Pan demanded over the phone.

“Pan, Mother Superior…she’s…she’s dead!”

Pan felt the coldness in his blood slowly freeze into hard crystals.

“What? When?”

“This morning!” Astrid sobbed. “Pan…I…I’m so scared!”

Pan managed not to turn to Wendy, though he desperately wanted to.

He needed to see her eyes.

This whole thing could be pure coincidence. The holy terror could have finally met her end and died in her sleep…but there were no such things as coincidences, not in Storybrooke and not mere hours after Pan had run her in the dirt using Wendy’s name.

“Damn…”

“Pan!”

“Yeah, sorry for swearing, whatever. I’ll be there soon.” He hung up before he could get her response.

Had he stayed on the line just a second longer, he could have caught the tail-end of her worry, and subsequently, her confession.

“It was an accident Pan! I was only trying to get her to admit what she did! I just want my freedom! I didn’t mean for anything to happen to her! Pan? Pan…”

It wasn’t until the icy wind of the cold November night hit Wendy in the face that the exact caliber of what they were about to do sank in:

They were going after Mother Superior’s probable killer. A girl—according to Pan—was as much of a victim in all this as Wendy was, as any of the nuns from the convent were.

Victim or not, Pan was willing to scapegoat Astrid…for her.

Wendy’s stomach twisted in guilt. No, no matter if she was guilty or not, she couldn’t allow that poor girl to go to jail, not without all the facts.

Her mind started racing for someway to just…slow everything down. What would they do if they found her? Would they call the police? Or would Pan set the entire town on fire just to help her get away?

She peaked up from Pan’s shoulder and could just catch the corner of his eye. What was he going to do? And what was she going to do to stop him?

They were around the corner from the convent when Pan came to a screaming halt, cursing ‘shit!’ as Wendy’s nails dug into his abs to prevent from getting thrown into the asphalt.

“The hell. Pan!” she hissed. He shushed her instantly, pulling her from the moped and ducking behind a bush. Wendy pushed the hair from her face and saw the pulsing of police lights just at the entrance of the convent.

“Fuck!” Pan hissed. “Double fucking hell!”

“Do they have her?” Wendy whispered.

“No, doesn’t look like it.” Pan responded. “Graham must have figured it out! That dirty bloodhound!”

Wendy shook her head, trying to calculate their next move—should they need one at all.

If Astrid were caught and confessed, Wendy’s name would be cleared.

But there was something else going on, something Pan was once again not letting her in on.

Whoever this ‘Astrid’ was, she meant enough to Pan that he was running after her, and Wendy sensed it was not for the sole purpose of clearing Wendy’s name.

He said he helped her before, and however he did so may have caused their predicament with the dead head nun.

The police must have thought so as well if they were at the convent.

They watched as Deputy Nolan exited the front door, saying something to Graham that caused him to send a command into his walkie-talkie.

Pan nudged her arm. “We have to go.”

“Where?” she whispered as she helped him roll his moped a quiet distance away.

“If Astrid’s not at the convent, there’s one other place she might be, but we need to get there before Graham and his pack do.”

Wendy nodded and jumped on the back of the moped as Pan hurriedly started it up, holding on for dear life as he drove them into uncertainty.

She hadn’t seen the docks yet, Wendy realized as Pan eased into the eerily quiet area.

It was strange, after a month and a half of pure trauma, she thought she saw all Storybrooke had to offer. Yet there was this massive and important part of the town she’d just looked over.

A part that apparently was harboring a possible killer.

Just on the edge of a very rickety boardwalk was a small boat with a barely visible light flickering inside, the only light on the entire dock.

“Why are we here?” Wendy whispered, lowering the flashlight on her cellphone to its lowest setting.

“In that boat is a man named Leroy Miner,” Pan explained. “He’s been Astrid’s secret lover for about four years now.”

Wendy blinked at the reveal and awaited its significance to their plight.

“She planned to elope with him several years ago, but Mother Superior stopped them, and incited a dash of blackmail with Leroy to add to the pot.”

Wendy nodded, releasing a knowing breath. It was a motive for murder, but why would Astrid wait so long to go through with it? She hardly seemed like a cold-blooded killer. Did it simply take her several years of being pushed to her limit, of not being with the man she loved, to finally set her off?

Or maybe she hadn’t been the one to be set off at all?

“Do you think this Leroy man had something to do with Mother Superior’s murder?” Wendy inquired. She could just see the outline of Pan’s face in the dark.

“I plan to find out,” Pan growled, rushing up to the boat. Wendy scurried after him.

“It could be dangerous! What if this Leroy man has a gun?”

Pan scoffed. “When have either one of us ever been intimidated by a gun?”

A brief flash of Cruella’s black and white hair struck Wendy’s mind and she went very quiet.

Unperturbed, Pan stepped onto the boat’s step, ready to bang on the door and demand Astrid’s whereabouts.

“Get the fuck away from that door Pan!”

Wendy shot around, shining her light on a squinting Tink.

“Watch it!” she hollered, blinking in irritation.

Pan jumped off the stepped. “The hell are you doing here!” he hissed, monitoring his tone in case he alerted the occupants of the boat.

She was going to ruin everything.

“I could ask you the same thing you little shit!” Tink spat, her own flashlight shaking in her hands. “But I believe I already know the answer to that.” She glanced around him to glare at Wendy. “Trying to get part two of your little fuckfest?”

Wendy swallowed a large lump in her throat. She knew Tink’s anger was misguided, but it still hurt to be so rawly despised by the truest friend she had in town.

Oddly, it was her worst enemy who stepped in front of her, shielding her from the ex-nun’s fire.

“You’re going to feel like a total jackass when this is all over,” Pan stated. “But for now I need you to shut the hell up an leave before you blow this whole thing.”

“Oh kiss a rattle snake Pan! I’ve been doing our own investigation. And I know what you’re about to do!”

“You mean trying to save a technically innocent woman from going to jail?”

“From framing her in the first place!” Tink yelled. “You’re trying to pin this on her and I won’t allow it!”

“Pin it?” Pan scoffed. “I know good and damn well she had something to do with it!”

“You’re here to stir up trouble like you always do! You’re going to mess her up just like you did Wendy!”

Wendy winced, and from the corner of her eye she could see lights of homes flickering on in the distance.

“Perhaps we should move this somewhere else?” Wendy called out in concern.

“Why would we do that! This is perfect! I’m so glad we can have this conversation out in the fucking open!” Pan howled, the sound loud and violent enough to wake half of Storybrooke.

And the occupants of Leory’s boat.

Through the curtained windows Wendy could see a fluster of movement and just the faintest clatter of glass. The string of movement traveled to the door until it slung open, revealing a stalky man in a wifebeater holding a baseball bat.

“You better have one hell of a reason to—” the man lowered his bat when he saw Pan glaring stolidly at him, a wide-eyed Wendy ducking just behind him.

“Pan?” he barked.

“Leroy.” Pan spat.

“Tink?”

“Not now Leroy!” Tink yelled.

“Oh for God’s sake!” he exclaimed.

“Leroy!” came a squeaky, much more feminine voice behind him.

The commotion stopped, and Wendy peeked behind Pan’s shoulder as Leroy muttered a hasty apology to the person, catching a glimpse of the itchy fabric the nuns had to wear as skirts.

“Astrid?” Tink inquired hopefully.

A small sound came from behind Leroy and in a moment the young murder suspect revealed herself.

The two nuns eyed each other for a moment, each taking in their distinctions. Astrid’s overly-ironed uniform that clung to her like a straightjacket. Tink’s messy updo and rugged jeans, ripped at the seams from constant wears.

One was caged. The other was free.

Yet they both were still wearing their own pair of shackles.

“Astrid,” Tink greeted with a wet smile. “I…”

“I was going to call you!” Astrid blurted out, her hands twitching. “Afterwards…when…” she glanced at Leroy.

Tink nodded, the worry resurfacing in her eyes.

“Please tell me what happened.” Tink begged. “The sisters said you disappeared sometime this morning, after Mother Superior…” Tink shook her head, her gaze landing on a sole overstuffed bag just beside the couch. Astrid had literally packed everything she owned.

Wendy heard talking from a distance, and knew they were seconds away from having a run-in with Graham.

“Like I said, let’s move this,” Wendy commanded.

Pan gave Leroy a dark look, and with a grumble he stepped aside to allow the three into his crowded boat.

But then, there was total silence. Everyone was staring at each other, unsure of who to trust, who would turn out to be the real enemy.

Wendy wanted this all to end so bad, but the only way it would be so was if the woman in front of her somehow confessed to Mother Superior’s murder. And that, no matter the consequence for her, is not what she wanted.

Wendy met the timid eyes, earnestly begging her to say something. The poor woman sensed her plea, and her fingers weaved nervously through her starchy skirt.

“I…I…” Astrid hesitated from behind the solidly-built man in front of her.

“You don’t have to say anything,” Leroy insisted.

Pan made a rush at the nun, stepping right up to her and avoiding Leroy’s ready bat.

“Astrid,” he said calmly, his fingers twitching to reach out and grab her. “You need to tell us what happened.”

“Don’t answer him sweetie!” Leroy warned. “It’s a trap! Look what they did to Mother Superior!”

“It wasn’t like that!” Wendy cut in.

“Sure it wasn’t!” Leroy snarled. “You’re just the one who wrote the story! How many more lives do you want to ruin tonight?”

Wendy locked her jaw to prevent herself from yelling at this man. He was only defending Astrid, she knew, but she was about damn tired of people jumping to conclusions about her.

Much to her curiosity it was Pan who stepped forward and got into the stalky man’s face.

“How about you shut up and let us settle this before someone else ends up dead?” he warned, low and frightening enough that Wendy’s throat in apprehension.

“Do not threaten him!” Tink warned, stepping between Leroy and Pan.

Pan gritted his teeth, wanting to scream at her to go away. She was going to ruin everything! But he saw the rawness in her light brown eyes. She didn’t hate him; Tink didn’t have that kind of bitterness in her soul, even towards him.

And there was something else there, something he hadn’t seen even when she was being pulled out of Jekyll’s morgue drawers.

Fear.

Fear for Astrid, fear for the a future without her wicked mother.

“Yesterday you escorted Wendy into Mother Superior’s office, right?” he inquired more softly.

“Y…yes.” Astrid admitted.

“Astrid, be careful.” Leroy warned.

“But you didn’t leave them? You hung back, heard a few things?”

“No!” Astrid defended earnestly. “I mean…I did hear the beginning of the conversation, but I left,” she nodded, as if trying to convince herself.

“What did you hear,” Wendy asked.

“Just…” Astrid fidgeted. “Who you were and that she upset your friend. But I left after that I swear!”

Wendy nodded, remember the bits of the conversation.

“But you didn’t stay away for long, did you?” Pan pressed, and Wendy turned to see the lifelessness in his eyes. Gone was the gamemaster who had his target corner. All that was left was a guilty man who had to make the strenuous decision of turning over the culprit and letting an innocent person take the fall if he didn’t.

“When did you go back?” Wendy continued.

“Later,” Astrid continued, and Leroy led her to the bruised couch. “I saw you,” she said to Wendy. “I saw you break in…but I recognized you from earlier, so I hesitated to call the police…I just… didn’t.” she looked back to Pan. “Then I saw you. You were running, and I thought something was wrong.”

Wendy glanced at Pan, forgotten aggravation over yesterday’s interference resurfacing. Though Pan didn’t return her look, she could feel the cockiness radiating just under his skin.

With a smothered roll of her eyes, she replayed her confrontation with Mother Superior in bouts. Her coming across the half cross, confront the head nun on it and nearly losing her hand when she took the cross back. And then, of course, Pan making his grand entrance and stealing her thunder, though to his credit his presence did cause her to finally admit what she did to Tink.

Wendy rubbed her temple. If she had just looked over her shoulder, she might have seen Astrid, might have prevented all of this.

“You heard everything,” Wendy concluded. “Mother Superior’s confession, and her promise to deny everything.”

Astrid slowly closed her eyes, the guilt written all over her face.

“Astrid,” Pan growled. “Whatever you saw or did after we left will determine what’s going to happen next. To you, to Tink,” he barely nudged Wendy’s way. “And even to her.”

The young nun’s head shot up, meeting Wendy’s dull gaze. Wendy gasped at the wounded look in her eyes, and knew in a single moment that no matter what happened after tonight, whether she came forward or not, she couldn’t hate her.

All she could see in that moment was Tink leaning into Felix’s arms as she struggled not to fall apart.

She’s always doing this.

Surrogate, but just barely.

Make it stop.

She wasn’t looking at a crazed vengeful murderer. She was looking at an abuse survivor.

And whether she had anything to do with Mother Superior’s death or not, she didn’t deserve any of the backlash from it.

Wendy went looking for the truth to give Tink some well-deserved closure. It was more than apparent to her now that Astrid deserved the same.

“Wait…” Wendy sighed, ready to end the whole mess when there was a loud bang on the door.

“Shit!” Leroy yelled, raising his bat. Astrid gasped and pressed herself into the corner.

“Leroy, open the door!” came Graham’s brogue.

“Fuck fuck fuck!” Pan hissed.

Wendy gasped as Tink shot past her to run to Nova. If Graham came through, it was over for both of them.

The young journalist gulped, her mind readying a very stupid idea that would either save her or endanger all of them.

“Is there a back door?” Wendy whispered to Leroy.

The stout man’s face lit with realization. “Yes, and there’s a supply shed just down the docks. She can stay there until I get these pests out of here.”

Wendy nodded. “Astrid, come with me.”

“I’m coming too,” Tink announced, stashing Astrid’s bag in a small cupboard.

“We’ll all go,” Pan added, looking out one of the back blinds. “All clear.”

Graham knocked on the door again and Leroy called out to keep him occupied while the four of them quietly left through the back.

Wendy could here someone walking around on top of the boat, no doubt looking for evidence for Astrid’s arrival. Up a head a flashlight was hovering about, and Pan grabbed her by the collar to keep her from walking out into it.

As soon as it lifted, the four of them quietly sprinted towards the direction of the shed, all worried that if they looked back they’d be caught for sure.

Pan struggled to get the rusty door open, the friction causing the metal to scream in protest, giving away their position. He did manage to get it open just enough for them all the slip in, the overwhelming smell of salt filling their lungs as Pan closed them in.

Wendy brought out her cellphone, the dim light barely adding illumination to the dark room.

“Watch your step,” Pan warned, pulling out his own cellphone to aid her. “One false move and you’ll fall into the water.

“Thanks for the tip,” Wendy deadpanned as Tink added her phone light as well.

They managed to find overturned barrels to sit on while they waited, using the cracks in the walls to watch the police raid from a far.

Tink had Astrid nestled close to her side, protecting her from the elements—and worse—the two people in the room who wanted her to talk.

Wendy squinted at Pan, his emotions disjointed from the light. What were they going to do, she asked with her eyes.

I’m working on it, he said with his own.

“I…I had to have proof.”

Wendy turned to a mousy Astrid. “Proof? Proof of what?”

“Remember what Leroy said,” Tink jumped in, glaring at Wendy, “You don’t have to say anything.”

“No, no I do,” Astrid gasped, pulling herself from her surrogate sister’s loving embrace. “I-I-I need to let this out. I need to confess to what I did.”

“Hold it,” growled Tink as she jumped up and stalked over to Pan. He barely had time to raise his eyebrows before Tink lifted him by his collar and began groping his pockets.

“The shit Tink!” Pan yelled, swatting her hands away.

Tink pushed him back harshly against the barrel. “Just had to be sure you weren’t recording this,” she snarled. “Rule one, right?”

“Rule two, actually,” Pan growled.

With Pan checked, Tink nodded to Astrid, giving her her blessing to continue.

Wendy rolled past him, anxious to hear Astrid’s truth.

“You were there that night, weren’t you?” Wendy gasped, searching her eyes in the weak light.

“I was…returning from Leroy’s,” she said with a shy smile. “And my room is right near Mother Superior’s office.”

Wendy watched as her hands wrung nervously in her skirt.

“So you heard me talking to her?” Wendy pressed carefully.

“Yeah…” Astrid sighed. “I heard…everything.” She glanced to Tink, tears in her eyes. “Tink I’m so sorry!”

Tink shook her head, though her face was as blank as a fresh coat of paint.

“So then, what, you stuffed pills down her throat?”

“Pan!” Tink warned.

“I’m just trying to wrap this up.” Pan shrugged.

“You know good and damn well she didn’t kill her, Pan!” Tink fought. “Why the hell are you trying to in this on her?”

Pan glanced Astrid’s way and clenched his teeth when she didn’t meet his eyes. He brushed past Tink and Wendy and sat right in front of her, making their knees touch to keep her attention.

“You heard what she did, and couldn’t take it, so you went into her office and drugged her up.”

“No!” Astrid gasped.

“Or maybe you waited until she drugged herself up and slipped some more in?” Pan shrugged. “She have a nice cup of tea before she croaked?”

Tink grabbed his shoulder. “Pan I’m fucking warning you?”

“Or maybe you walked in at the right time?” he smiled cruelly. “Maybe she already overdosed and you made sure she didn’t come back from it.”

“No!” Astrid sobbed. “I would never do something like that, I couldn’t!”

“Yes you can I know you can! I watched you—”

Before he could finish his accusation, someone grabbed him by the collar and pulled him around. In a second he was on the rotting wood, his nose aching and bloody, his head spinning from the adrenaline of it all.

A shout followed next.

And then a thud of something heavy hitting the ground.

The lights danced from the confusion, and for a moment Pan was surrounded by blackness.

Yet somehow it was nearly as terrifying as it should have been.

He smirked, the feeling of blood on his fingers expected but still a unrequited surprise.

He reached across the floor to grab his phone, using the light to illuminate his attacker’s bloody, clenched wrist, and then her face, ready to congratulate Tink on finally getting it all out of her system.

His smile faded some when he saw it was actually Wendy, her eyes bloodshot from unshed tears, her breath labored.

Pan took in a shaky breath, squashing his instinct to fight back.

She needed this. He wanted her to have it.

“I just went to get proof.”

Pan glanced up at Astrid. “Proof of what? What the hell did you take?”

“I’m guessing that,” Wendy answered, nodding just behind Tink and Astrid.

Tink followed her gaze and the sight of the familiar lusterless metal stilled the air in her lungs.

Astrid hurried to the object, cradling it to her chest.

“She was asleep when I went in, so I searched for anything to prove what she did. Paperwork or something, but I found this instead.”

Tink reached out and took the object, the other half of her begotten cross.

Pan stood, wiping his nose as he addressed the hurting woman.

“I was going to send it to you later, but I wanted to keep it in case she…”

“In case she what?” inquired Wendy.

Astrid looked absolutely miserable. “I…I was planning on leaving the convent for a long time. Leroy finally fixed the engine in his boat and we were going to leave,” she smiled fondly. “We were finally leaving this place.” Astrid shook her head—there was no time for sentimentals. “So, I searched her drawers until I found that, and I was going to call her as soon as I was out of Storybrooke to tell her what I knew.”

“So that she wouldn’t come after you,” Pan muttered.

“Exactly,” Astrid concluded wetly. “And—and I swear she was breathing when I left! She was just sleeping! I swear…I don’t know what happened after I left.”

Tink wrapped her arms around her from behind.

“Don’t.” Tink breathed. “Don’t say anymore. I believe you. I get it.”

Wendy gulped, stepping forward in hopes of comforting both of them.

This is all my fault.

“Don’t!” Tink sobbed. “Just stay away from me,”

Astrid pulled away from Tink, holding her hands up in defense.

“No, Tink she didn’t do any of this!” Astrid proclaimed. “She told Mother Superior she would let her tell you everything.”

Tink glanced at Wendy, disbelief glassing over her eyes.

“But you published it anyway,” she said quietly. “You published her filth for the entire town to see.”

“No she didn’t,” Astrid jumped in before Wendy could defend herself. “She wanted to give you two a chance. Even Pan said—”

“Pan?” Tink questioned. “What the hell does he have to…”

Wendy gulped when the realization blossomed in her eyes.

Pan closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He was fucked.

“You did this.” Tink said, not as a question but as a fact. “This was all you…” she paused, her lips twitching until her body shook with rusty laughter.

“Oh my god of course this was you!” she laughed, tears streaming down her cheeks. “You…you do shit like this all the time!”

“Tink—”

“You take…” she breathed in a shaky breath of stale air and limped up to Pan, inches from his stoic face. “Innocent people…their lives…everything they love…and you crush it!”

Pan remained still, even as the spit flew from her mouth and hit him.

Let her have this.

“I trusted you,” Tink cried. “I forgave you even after everything! After you let the psychopath lock me in a fucking drawer!”

Pan flinched, but kept his gaze with the spitting ex-nun.

“But why?” Tink gasped. “Why me? Why hurt me like this? Why her!” she motioned to Wendy. “Do you have any idea the things I said to her because of you?”

Wendy wiped the tears from her cheeks and willed herself to speak for Pan.

“He wasn’t trying to hurt you Tink—”

“You stay out of this!” Tink yelled at her. “This is still on you as much as him!”

��“Oh please,” Pan snorted. “She’s doesn’t have the gall to pull something like this.”

“To ruin lives?” Tink laughed. She glanced briefly at Wendy and nodded. “That much I believe.”

“This was never to hurt you Tink,” Pan sighed. “This was to take that bitch down once and for all. Wendy just stumbled on the perfect gateway.”

“Oh please,” Wendy gagged. “You invited yourself to my investigation.”

“If I hadn’t showed up she would have knocked your ass out and nailed you to a cross.”

“Sacrilegious much?” Wendy snarked.

Astrid shook her head. “But who killed her then?”

Wendy and Pan looked at each other, both wishing they had some kind of answer.

Tink moved past them and slumped exhaustedly on her barrel.

“Maybe it really was an accident,” Tink shrugged. “Maybe she took too much Vitacin and…” her shoulders began to quake. “went to sleep.”

Astrid was by her side in an instant, consoling her friend and releasing her own sorrows.

Pan stood back, dumbfounded and sobbing women before him.

All he could see was Felix running after the devil nun as she dragged Tink away…begging her to let her go.

To set her free.

“You’re hurting her!”

“Why!” Pan yelled at them, starling even Wendy.

“Why are you crying over that bitch? She hurt you both! She hurt so many others! And you shed tears over her? Why? Why aren’t you celebrating?”

Please thank me. I did this for you.

“She was my mother, Pan!” Tink screamed.

“Oh why the hell does that matter now!” he spat.

“Because if I had found out from her rather than reading it in the fucking paper, maybe we could have a chance?”

“Chance at what?”

“To forgive!” Tink cried. “To begin again. To…something.”

Something.

Why was it always ‘something’?

“Now…I’ll never have that.” She rested her head on her clasped hands. Like she was praying.

To what?

“I’ll never know what it’s like to have a mom who truly loves me. If she were alive…if I knew everything…I might have had a chance then.”

Tink’s word cut Wendy to her core. When she first came to Storybrooke she was terrified of losing her mother. Even as she proved victorious in her fight with cancer, that god-awful fear refused to stop chewing at her brain.

Through the fear there was an intense love that made the cells in her bones sing. Her mother always had her back, always protected from her the ostracizing voices around her.

The very idea of anyone—especially Tink—not having that, and never having, broke Wendy’s spirit.

“Tink, I’m so sorry,” Wendy said. Sorry for the investigation. For Tink’s lost youth. Even for Mother Superior and the crater of emotion her death had left on her begotten daughter.

Pan tensed.

Not you too. Please Wendy don’t.

“Well this sob fest isn’t getting us anywhere,” Pan exclaimed. “We need to come up with a plan. Astrid says Mother Superior was still alive when she met. That either means someone finished her off or it really was an accident.”

“Then let’s just turn ourselves over,” Wendy suggested. “Astrid had nothing to do with Mother Superior’s death, and neither did we.”

Pan rolled his eyes. “That watchdog will get us for everything else but murder. Breaking and entering, evading the police, knocking out a doctor and stealing an autopsy report—”

“Half of that is on you!” Wendy shouted at him.

“Technically you broke into the convent on your own, I just followed you in,” Pan winked.

“On your suggestion!” Wendy fought.

“This all started because you couldn’t mind your own damn business!”

“I was trying to help my friend! What have you done good lately!”

Before he could fire back, the door to the shed opened with a rusted scream.

“Astrid!”

The three gathered around the scared nun, using their bodies as barriers between her and the intruder.

“Astrid your safe!”

The three let out a strained breath of relief as Leroy’s stalky body bounded through the shed and took hold of Astrid’s freezing hands.

“It’s over, they know what happened to Mother Superior! You’re not a suspect any more!”

“What?” Pan exclaimed.

Leroy turned to him but his eyes stopped on Tink, his wide thankful grin vanishing at her tear-stained face.

“Oh Tink.”

“What is it Leroy,” Pan ordered.

Wendy watched in uncertainty as the man stumbled for words, for a way to spare Tink from the pain she didn’t deserve.

However, there were times when one needed to just be…blunt.

“Tink, they found a suicide note.”

Wendy rubbed her eyes, exhaustion sinking into her bones. She gasped when she looked at the overhead clock in Graham’s office: 8:30 p.m. This day seemed to be lasting forever.

Across the room Pan was still wiping dried blood from his bruised nose. Wendy wondered if he felt guilty at all, if he would show any change at all from the experience.

Then again, she wondered the same thing after the de Vil incident as well as the Jekyll one. He was still cold, and reckless, and illusive.

Through the glass window she could see Leroy and Astrid standing, looking utterly relieved. Tink was in the other office with Deputy Nolan giving her own statement.

Wendy couldn’t help but smile. They’d all been to hell and back, but it was all almost over. Astrid and Leroy could begin their lives anew, and Wendy could work on earning Tink’s trust back. She was indirectly responsible for her grief, and as much as she hated to admit it, Pan was right about her busy-bodiness. She shouldn’t have done any of this without Tink’s blessing.

However, Tink would have closure now, even if forgiveness was a long way off.

Graham finally walked them to the door, but Astrid looked over her shoulder, smiling brightly at Wendy. The young journalist could see years of stress melt off her face.

Thank you, she seemed to say.

“Good,” Wendy sighed, relaxing in her seat. “Good,”

Graham returned shortly and the two journalists were faced with a new mystery: how were they going to be punished for their various crimes.

“I should lock both of you up,” Graham said. “This has been a day from hell.”

“Glad we could add some excitement in your pointless life,” Pan smirked.

“Shut it!” Graham warned, and though Pan’s smirk didn’t fade he became blessedly quiet.

“Then…just what are you going to do to us?” Wendy inquired tentatively.

“Shut up rookie!” Pan hissed. “Never show fear, rule six!”

“You both shut up!”

Wendy and Pan both flinched when Sydney’s voice boomed through the police station.

Wendy herself felt a chill at the site of him, but not necessarily for the rage on his face. Glass had to use a cane due to the back injury he received during the showdown with Jekyll’s lackey. Just the thought of the battle made Wendy’s blood curdle.

“I leave you two to your own devices for a day and you almost become accessories in a murder!” he yelled at them.

“Please, we were barely witnesses—”

“I mean it, Pan!”

Pan stopped talking, but he popped his jaw as loudly as he could just to prove he wasn't going to be put down.

Glass sighed, leaning tiredly against Graham’s death.

“This was too close a call, and your actions caused a lot a problems.”

“That’s journalism, Glass,” Pan muttered.

“You’re both suspended.”

“What!” Pan roared.

“One week.”

“Like hell we are!” Pan jumped up.

In a flash Glass had the end of his cane just pressing into Pan’s windpipe. The younger man barely flinched, but he didn’t try to pick a fight.

“I’m warning you, leave, and shut the hell up,” Glass growled. “Or so help me I will make sure your writing Garden Club updates until the day you die.”

Wendy could see steam rising from Pan’s skin. He was ready to explode, and he would more than likely take half the block out with him.

“Go home, Pan,”

Pan glare turned to Wendy, piercing into her soul. Wendy resisted his heat. She’d accepted her part in this and would gladly accept her punishment. He couldn’t hurt her.

With a growl Pan slapped Glass’s cane away and stormed out of the office, the concrete of each step sounding as if it was breaking under his seething stomp.

The rest of the party flinched when Pan slammed the door downstairs.

“As for you kid,” Glass continued exhaustedly. “I’ll drive you home.”

Wendy nodded and followed him without protest, avoiding Graham’s downcast eyes.

The ride to her apartment was slow and quiet, the humming of the heat a dutiful distractor from the slight tension between the two journalists.

“For what it’s worth, kid,” Glass spoke. “What you did was pretty damn impressive, but this on top of everything else you and Pan have stirred up, it was either cut you down or let Graham cage you.”

“Duly noted,” Wendy sighed.

Another short bout of quiet followed until Glass began to shuffle around in his saddle back, worrying the woman with his slight swerving.

“Check it out,” he said as he handled her a wrinkled paper. “A rought draft of tomorrow’s paper.”

Wendy gulped at the large printed headline of Mother Superior’s story. She scanned through the story, the first-testimony coming from another nun at the convent who found the note under Mother Superior’s chair after the police left, followed by a statement from Sheriff Graham.

“How does an entire forensic team miss a suicide note?” Wendy pondered aloud.

Glass laughed. “I wondered the same thing. I also wondered how the hell Superior overdosed on meds that she took for years.”

Wendy paused. “That…is weird.”

She turned the page for the rest of the story and saw a strangely shot picture. She squinted a bit, and found it to be a letter.

Wendy gasped. “Is this…”

“Technically yeah,” Glass answered as he slowed at a stop sign. “But there is no way in hell I could actually publish it. Respect for the victim and all that. We replaced it with a photo of her.”

Wendy nodded absently and turned on the mirror light to better illuminate the page. The letter was sprawled out, obviously hastily written. Wendy pondered if her hurried letter was written out of fear. Fear of the future in her position? Or with the community? Maybe with Tink, if she cared about her at all.

Wendy couldn’t make out the writing after all, but she couldn’t look away from the letter.

There was something else. She could feel it in her bones. Buzzing and begging to nestle deeper.

Until it finds blood.

She squinted at the letter and while the words were unclear, the penmanship was admirable with it’s curvy cursive. It reminded her of her father’s. It took years of practice to create such longhand, and usually by people who’s livelihood depended on how well they could right. Bankers, like her father, secretariws, lawyers…

Wendy’s blood went cold.

“Kid?”

It found the blood.

Wendy grabbed her bag and dumped its contents in her lap, searching hastily for the one scrap of evidence that would tie this nightmare together.

And she did.

Wrinkled under a slew of pens was Mr. Gold’s cell number on his business card.

The l’s on the card and in the letter were the same.

“Kid are you listening?”

Wendy clutched the card in her hand and opened the door, causing Glass to come to a screeching halt.

“The hell! Wendy?” he barely dodged her seatbelt hitting him in the face as she sprinted from the car.

“Wendy? Wendy!”

Wendy blocked him out, blocked anything out that would prevent her from getting to Mr. Gold in time.

It was ironic really.

The only time she ran in a panic was to evade a foe, yet for once she wasn’t running from a monster.

She was running to one.

It was well past closing by the time she reached Gold’s shop, yet the lights were still on and the man himself was behind his desk, seeming to fill out paperwork.

Or more suicide letters. Wendy thought bitterly.

The door was locked, and Gold looked up when he heard someone jimmying the lock.

Through the glass she could see his lip tug in a half smile, and she resisted throwing the nearest rock through the door.

“A bit late, isn’t it Miss Darling?” he greeted when he let her in.

“You did this,” Wendy seethed when he closed the door.

“You’ll have to be a bit more specific,” he countered as he limped back to his desk.

Wendy rushed after him and threw his business card on the glass.

“You wrote Mother Superior’s suicide letter,” Wendy gasped. “It’s your handwriting!”

Gold simply stared at her, brilliantly masking any fear or being caught or surprise that Wendy had put the pieces together so soon.

“That is a very serous accusation, Miss Darling,”

“But not untrue,” Wendy calculated. “Do not lie to me, Gold. We’ve been completely honest with each other up to this point.”

Gold nodded in agreement. “Indeed we have,”

“So its true then?” Wendy gulped. “You wrote her letter?”

Gold simply stared at her, and Wendy could almost think it was Pan.

And as Pan he would do, Gold tilted his head and chuckled, low and humorous. Dark.

“Why?” Wendy breathed. “Why would you do something so…heinous?”

Gold shook his head, his smirk becoming more of a tired grin.

“A variety of reasons really. Not that her dark little secret was out, I no long had the leverage I needed to keep her in my corner. She was disposable.”

“She was human!” Wendy yelled.

“She,” Gold seethed, “was a vile woman who used fear to manipulate people to do her bidding.”

“Like you?” Wendy scoffed.

“I always give the people I deal with something in return.”

Wendy shook her head. She couldn’t believe this. This was a nightmare. When was she going to wake up?

“Did you kill her?” Wendy inquired.

Gold actually scoffed, as if being accused of murder was below him.

“I simply put everything into place. She handled the dirty bits.”

“But the letter…”

“Was the only way you and Sister Astrid would ever be clear.” He concluded, his tone dropping more seriously. “If her death remained labeled an accident, the eyes of the town would have stayed on you forever. They’d never trust you, never accept you because suspicion wins out every time.”

“No,” Wendy shook her head.

“And then of course there was Sister Astrid’s unintentional role in all of this,” Mr. Gold said in a low, almost sarcastic tone. “She would have been arrested, being the last person in her office and all,”

“We would have helped her!”

“And ruin yourself in the process,” Gold pointed out. “This is what is best for everyone, dearie. You’re all free now. Why not fly and leave the matter be?”

“Because it’s still wrong!” Wendy gasped. “You meddled with evidence and put a horrible light on her death. That is how she’s going to be remembered.”

“As she should be,” Gold growled. “That woman was no saint, and now she can receive the reputation she finally deserves.”

“No…” Wendy gasped. This was wrong. So wrong.

Gold sighed. “You’re a smart woman, Miss Darling. I no doubt you’ll see the benefit in this soon enough.”

Wendy glared at him, holding back tears.

“But you’re also a kind one,” Gold added, picking up his business phone and placing it in front of Wendy. “You have a good heart. I saw that yesterday with Miss la Bell,” he paused for a moment. “And with Belle.”

Wendy gulped.

“If you truly believe that revealing my folly is the right thing to do, then go ahead,” he tapped on the phone. “Expose me.”

Wendy’s fingers flinched, itching to take the phone, call Sheriff Graham, and end this whole thing.

“But I know you won’t do it.”

Wendy’s hand shot back.

“And just why do you think that?”

That eerie smirk returned.

“Because deep down you know I’m right. That Pan is right.”

“Stop.”

“And I think he’s in your bones now,” he nodded convinced. “And I think you do too.”

“Why the hell would you say that!”

Gold tapped on the phone again. “Because you’re not picking up the phone.”

Wendy took in a shaky breath, willing her hand to rise.

You’re just as filthy and selfish as he is.

“That’s not true.”

You're setting yourself up for a world of trouble if you stay here.

“No I’m not.”

This town, that…maniac you call a boyfriend, they're going to ruin you.

“I’m not like him.” She reached for the phone but couldn’t will the nerves in her body to pick it up.

I just want to be free.

She was no saint.

And next time

No one's going to run back here to save you

Wendy released the phone and got out of Gold’s shop as fast as she could, just missing the satisfied look on his face.

“Fly, fly, little bird.”

Her lungs were on fire by the time she reached her apartment, her vision blurring. By shear instinct she was able to find her own apartment.

She didn’t feel safe until her door was closed and locked. Until she was past her bedroom. Until she was in the deep polished tub where she could blame the sickening noises that left her throat on the aging pipes.

tether notes 1/3

long overdue, sry abt that.

pt. 1

why is there no change to the mines after 15+ years of destroying an environment?

i modeled the sinnoh region of tether almost exclusively on the hokkaido region of japan. from the layout of cities like sapporo, abashiri, and muroran, to geography like lake saroma northeast of veilstone and the hidaka mountain range for lower mt coronet, and especially, to the isolationism. i kept it trie to pokemon in the fact that sinnoh has no railways, unlike its real-life counterpart, which has plenty for traversing its vastness. a big part of hokkaido is how empty it is.

[on that note, though i mention both, i used muroran photography to model veilstone instead of abashiri, as its a proper port town. not super significant, jsu thought i’d bring it up, since muroran is sandgem’s counterpart.]

hokkaido is vastly underpopulated in ratio to its size. its mostly due to climate, and nature. things are far less technologized there. outside of sapporo, you won’t find very many glowing billboards and fancy casinos and active nightlife. you have to ride a train for hours to reach the next big town. the mountain range cuts the northern region in half.

when compared to this, little villages out in the middle of the wilds are far more isolated than towns. especially when they’re remnants of indigenous tribes. it’s sad, but it’s pretty standard process in the world nowadays -governments don’t care about the native people much. it’s prevalent in the united states, and if you’ve ever read commentary from fma’s mangaka arakawa, you’ll know the same is true for japan. the ainu are isolated to hokkaido. they aren’t looked after much.

so, even though it’s been a direct result of oreburgh’s mines’ negative effects, it’s still a matter of most of the sinnoh region not even knowing the village existed, and even if they did, not paying it mind. the wilds of sinnoh are difficult to traverse, and it’s more logical to take a boat to your destined city instead of traversing through them. that’s why so many of the big towns in sinnoh are located on a shore. for others, like jubilife and hearthome, there are airports that cater to people. and, for real life hokkaido, there are the trains.

i really wrote abt the mining incident in reference to bangladesh. in hokkaido, once all the prevalent mines started having accidents, the japanese government was quick to shut them down. in other eastern countries, especially bangladesh, the government is notorious for doing nothing abt the insane amounts of river pollution caused by factory waste. writing the river scene was heartbreaking, but learning about the trash rivers that prevail in countries with vast amounts of pollution, of the ones that run stark orange with mining waste, that was more difficult than anything i’d written for tether.

so it comes down to being a mix of two things. one, sinnoh’s government viewing the production of the mine and the money it brings over the safety of the nature that surrounds it. and, two, no one noticing the damage anyway. it’s not like it ever affected oreburgh. or, maybe it did, but they installed the fresh-air vents to keep the mines clean, like the changes made in pokemon platinum suggest? the oreburgh mines are the sinnoh region’s majority of energy, after all (you can argue for sunyshore, but i’d say solar power only stretches so far from the source) so even if there’s a scuffle of it here or there, keeping it active is important.

also. my take of the pokemon world has always been a little gritty. so there’s that.

why hancock as champion?

i ask myself this question everyday. i don’t even like boa. why did i include her, if in name only? what was i thinking? oh well. it’s already been done.

[side note, again. if boa’s in charge of sinnoh, considering her, erm, personality, is it hard to believe nothing was ever done abt the mine pollution? aka does she care abt anyone but herself hm hm ]

pt 2.

i introduce a pokemon known as driftzel rather early on. it’s luffy’s, and it’s an in-progress pokemon, a concept i thought would be interesting to use. you can see what driftzel looks like here. it also links to the blog i got the idea from. instead of it being like a natural evolution, though, the idea in tether is more of a middle evolution for pokemon with two lines. so, there aren’t any for three-line evolutions. i was originally going to introduce ricaru, an evolution between riolu and lucario, but i moved away from that idea somewhere around writing part 4.

herbalist!law is the solution i came up with in lieu of him being a doctor. i had so much fun with the berries. when i was doing my maps for each part of tether, i had separate maps marking out the locations of berries in the games and which ones law collects along the journey to veilstone.

hearthome is the only city i didn’t base on a real world counterpart. i think because i had too much to work with already. the cathedral, the contest hall, the gym. all the architecture. the poffin house. i didn’t wanna change anything abt hearthome, and more importantly, i wanted to portray part of japan’s hospitality here, too. it does extend all the way to hokkaido, yes. people are nice, and friendly, and happy to have travelers, just as depicted in all the games.

yes, all of ace’s pokemon are named after spade pirates. except for isuka, because i couldn’t resist. yes, striker is a spade pirate, it was his ship.

[in reference to the night walk between hearthome and solaceon] remember to bring a compass, when you’re in a region with a giant magnetic mountain range at its center, because it will be a lifesaver.

Law can see how uneasy Luffy still is, but as they walk further from the coast, he eases up, so he chooses not to ask

^ in platinum, the opposite shore houses the hallowed tower where you can encounter spiritomb. sensing the presence of an evil spirit leaves luffy on edge, thus their dodge to avoid it.

why are lunar wings, an event-only item, brought up in hearthome?

you’re right. lunar wing is a rare dppt item, and you can only get it after encountering cresselia on fullmoon island. my inspiration came from an episode of the dp anime, where a stall in canalave was selling the feathers as homage to the game event. actually, to go further, the same thing happened in the darkrai movie, which is where i got most of the insp. especially for the charms made out of them -look at the picture here!! i figured, with the sinnoh region i was depicting being a place of mostly friendly and peaceful pokemon, cresselia was more generous with her feathers. they make for popular items, and if they work in keeping the bad dreams away, whats the harm? plus, they’re in hearthome, a hotbed for tourists and foreign activity, because they’d sell best there. a good luck souvenir from sinnoh? sign me up.

but they are still lunar wings, and they do work, as shown with chimchar. i really wanted a piece of practical merchandise i could show off, and once i got the idea for chimchar’s introduction, i tweaked the hearthome scene to include the feathers. if you pay attention, though, you’ll note that law no longer has restless sleep after luffy’s secured a lunar wing.

the solaceon ruins was a place i wanted to explore so badly, but it just didn’t make sense within the continuity of the story, especially when i decided to go the northern route and introduce tsuru out of the fog. my original ideas were split between that, and law/lu cutting through the mountainous area of the ruins as a shortcut to veilstone. i was really captivated with exploring the uncharted areas of sinnoh’s map, and i think at this point i had established enough, so i decided they would stay on paved routes this time. but! i did want to bring it up, which is where carmel comes in.

in the games, there are houses on the outskirts of solaceon, nestled between the trees, and very close to the ruins. there’s one house where a little boy will give you ball capsule stickers. that’s the basis for mother carmel’s house. she lives there with anana, the first of the captive granddaughters to be introduced.

anana is creepy in canon. you can’t die that. i used carmel’s canon portrayal to match, and then the scene becomes a match of who’s creepier -the ruins or this old lady? the atmosphere around the ruins is weird. there are unknown there, so the space is distorted. it’s an old place. it’s quite possibly connected to giratina and the distortion world, since there are unknown present. it’s supposed to be eerie and strange and off-putting. it’s supposed to feel like a place where a wandering child can disappear into quite easily. though, maybe carmel’s just inattentive.

The trees out here are tall, towering over them in shades of deep green and dull orange, a byproduct left over from spring’s bloom

i mention orange trees in a section of the woods just past solaceon. they’re not orange from fall, though, they’re naturally so. oran trees! any off-colored trees mentioned -assume they’re berry trees. also another berry thing i had fun with, deciding which was a bushel and which was a plant and which was a huge tree.

i had way too much fun depicting the fog forest. i actually listened to a lot of pkmn soundtrack while writing tether, and for this part, this santalune forest remix was on constant replay. getting turned around, not being able to see your map, hearing the sounds and calls of wild pokemon, and then getting so lost in it that you begin to hear what isn’t there. not being able to see in front of you, barely able to dodge attacks and sabotage from wild pokemon, and feeling like youre going insane from myriads of different tunes clashing together. the road between solaceon and the dragon tamer’s house is terrifying, and i wanted to use this to depict the dangers of traveling in the pokemon world. though most sinnoh pokemon thus far had been shown to have good intentions, it can’t be said about every pokemon.

not to mention the big drop you have before the bridge, right when you get out of the fog! not really even out of it, as it sticks around near the dragon tamer’s house. could you imagine encountering something like that in real life? imagine how many accidents there would be.

so i had a bit of trouble in deciding if i wanted to use tsuru or not. this was fairly early on in wano, and i knew i wanted to use tama, but who to pair her up with for grandmother/daughter matches was iffy. looking back at my list, i had lots of other picks for the dragon elder. gloriosa, shakky, kureha, rouge, gerth, even! carmel, too, at one point was a pick, since i planned this part out early on into the story. i actually had marine tsuru on the list as well! in the end, i think i decided on wano tsuru bc of all the dragon tie-ins thus far. if i were to go back, now, i think i might change it to toki and hiyori, possibly. or, tsuru and hiyori. not that i dont love tama, though, i do.

i had a small list of grandkids, too, depending on who was the grandmother. anana, rebecca, tama, marguerite, and a few choices for marine tsuru (the standout was, apparently, isuka. then i repurposed the name for ace’s talonflame. tashigi was another pick, but in the end in wanted little girls.) at another point i thought about hiluluk and chopper, and had another grandfather/son combo that i can’t remember anymore. those were scrapped early on, since i wanted all girls. i also thought abt chimney and kokoro, but i wanted them on a more coastal city, to mirror water 7.

there were two things i really wanted to happen in tether. one was a pokemon joining a team. and another was an evolution. part 2 fulfills one of those w chimchar, the pokemon i always wanted luffy to have, and the one i never knew i needed him to earn. also, giving pokemon their own personalities is really cute.

also, just before this scene, i take a skip, marking the second time an indefinite amount of time has passed between scenes. i realized while writing the time through mt coronet that i was writing more passively than actively, and this was speeding up things more than i liked. it’s why i took a break and depicted hearthome for a couple days, so that things were happening more in the moment. still, i hope at this point it’s gotten across that it’s taken a long time to travel to veilstone. moving across the entire region is a long journey, after all.

introducting aura, a movie concept.

so. aura was the main reason i wanted tether to take place in the sinnoh region. it’s actually mentioned in the games once, and that’s from riley, one of the sinnoh quartet, on iron island. in the movie where the concept is introduced, it’s brought with a lucario, another region. in the anime, riley has an active role in aura. but, for those who’ve just played the games, or know next to nothing abt pokemon, i tried to explain my best in-story.

aura takes the place of conquerors haki in this pokemon verse, basically. you’re born with the sensitivity to it, so it’s not something just everyone can unlock. it’s rare, and it’s widely unknown. like law says, in sinnoh it’s considered an old myth. outside of sinnoh, it’s hardly known at all. so finding others to learn from is difficult. most people go their whole lives without even knowing what it is, just considering it natural luck that they can perceive things than others cannot. luffy meeting shanks, and learning that they both are sensitive to aura, is an incredible thing. having someone to teach you how to manipulate aura rare, and pretty amazing, when you think of the chances. but luffy and shanks live in different regions, and luffy has his own life. it’s been a long time, training, and as he expresses in part 2, he’s still not as far as he wants to be.

aura guardians, what shanks is, are almost unheard of. with great power comes great responsibility. and with great power comes the desire to obtain it. aura guardians are secret for a reason -if someone found out a person had an incredible power, and had the desire to, would they not seek it out for themselves? even to other aura users, revealing themselves wasn’t wise. protect yourself first. it’s a motto you’ll see come into play later.

with that said, and with one of the last things luffy mentions in part 2: could that have something to do with why shanks has gone missing?

YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS

WF THOUGHTS (10/21/20).

The presidency is a complex, multifaceted, job. What type of person makes a good president? That's one of the biggest political questions of all time.

Why does God allow suffering in the world? That's one of the biggest religious questions of all time?

Have you ever thought about the relationship between those two big questions? I have.

Suffering changes people. Nobody endures suffering without undergoing change.

Some people experience negative changes. Depression. Anger. Self-isolation.

Some people experience positive changes. The trauma, and the related suffering, makes them stronger. They become interested in making the world a better place. They look for ways to minimize the suffering of others. When they come upon a person who is suffering, or who is down on their luck, they respond with empathy and compassion.

What does any of this have to do with the presidency? Let's take a look at a few presidents and see if we can draw any conclusions.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt endured trauma and suffering. Shortly before his 30th birthday, his third child died as a young infant. Shortly before his 40th birthday, and approximately 12 years before he became president, he was diagnosed with polio. He became permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Unbeknownst to most of America, he was confined to a wheelchair. He was able to walk short distances by wearing iron leg braces and using canes. FDR, who created a multitude of important social programs, was one of our greatest presidents.

Despite his family wealth, John F. Kennedy was no stranger to trauma and suffering. As a teenager and young adult, he had serious gastrointestinal issues that required long hospital stays. He also suffered chronic back problems. In 1940, after his graduation from Harvard, he attempted to become an officer in the Army. Because of his bad back, he was rejected. A year later, after considerable effort by his influential father, he landed a spot in the Navy Reserves. After a series of desk jobs, he volunteered for the PT Boat fleet. By early 1943, he was in the Pacific and in the middle of WWII. You've probably heard about PT-109. In August of 1943, JFK was commanding that boat when it was sunk by the Japanese. Kennedy lost two of his crew members during the initial strike. Kennedy reinjured his back during the attack. For seven days after the attack, searching for safety and supplies, Kennedy and his surviving crew swam from island to island. Each swim was two or three miles. On the swims, Kennedy towed an injured man by clenching the injured man's life jacket strap in his teeth. After he was rescued, despite his back injury, Kennedy returned to battle. By the end of 1943, ongoing back problems forced Kennedy to end his active duty. Upon returning home, he was hospitalized for ten months. Soon after his release from the hospital, his older brother was killed in action. Death followed Kennedy into the U.S. Senate. Jackie, his young wife, had a miscarriage in 1955 and and a stillborn child in 1956. In 1963, a few months before the assassination, a newborn son died a few days after birth. All of this trauma, all of this suffering, had a significant impact on this charismatic and visionary president.

While Kennedy was fighting in the Pacific, a young kid from Connecticut turned 18 and on his birthday he enlisted in the Navy. George H.W. Bush soon became one of the youngest pilots in Navy history. By the middle of 1944, Bush was flying in WWII hot zones. Early in his deployment, Bush's plane was shot down by the Japanese. The two other men on the plane were killed. Bush was rescued, and for the rest of his life he would frequently ask himself: "Why had I been spared and what did God have for me?" Bush continued to fly combat missions. In his career, he flew 58 mission. In early 1945, when he was home on leave, Bush married a wonderful woman named Barbara. The couple faced a major crisis in 1953. Their four year old daughter, Robin, died of leukemia.

Barack Obama did not serve in the military. He did not have health issues, and he did not suffer the loss of a child. Obama faced other challenges. It is impossible for a White person to understand Obama's challenges. In 1961, in a racially divided America, Obama was born to a White mother and a Black father. His parents divorced when he was three, and his father returned to Kenya. Except for a single visit when he was 10, Obama never saw his father again. (The father died in an accident when Obama was 21.) From ages 6 through 10, Obama lived in Indonesia. Due to visa problems, his new step father had been forced to return to Jakarta. After more than a year of separation, Obama's mother followed with her young boy. Even though she divorced her Indonesian husband, Obama's mother stayed in Indonesia for almost all of her life. When he was 10, for many unhappy reasons, Obama was relocated to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. The young Black boy was raised by his White grandparents. As a teenager, Obama struggled with life and "medicated" himself with alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. He would get high to "push questions of who I was out of my mind." Thankfully, he defeated his demons and became our first Black president.

Should I tell you about more presidents? I could tell you about George W. Bush's struggles with alcohol (not to mention the ongoing family pain arising from the fact that Laura, his future wife, ran a stop sign when she was 17 and killed a former boyfriend who was driving across her path.) Are you interested in hearing about Bill Clinton's tragic childhood? ( It involved bigamy, the death of his biological father before he was born, abandonment by his mother for a few years when he was very young, and growing up in a household with a stepfather-- with the last name "Clinton" -- who abused his mother and brother.) I think I hear all of you shouting: "Stop." "No more!"

What's my point? All of the men discussed above were good, or very good, presidents. I don't think it's a coincidence that each of them had direct, personal, experience with trauma and suffering. Consciously or not, certain people use their pain as a catalyst for personal growth. Suffering gives rise to an enhanced capacity to empathize with the struggles of others. After enduring their own personal ordeals, these "survivors" are naturally drawn to public service and seek to make the world a better place. Their compassion gives rise to a desire to help others.

Based on the above, I think that Joe Biden will be a good or very good president. He has run the gauntlet of pain and suffering. In 1972, when he was 30, Biden was forced to face a major tragedy. His wife and their one year old daughter were killed in a traffic accident. Biden didn't have the luxury of collapsing into grief. He was suddenly the single parent of two young boys, both injured in the fatal accident, and he had just been elected to the U.S. Senate. Although Biden "felt that God had played a horrible trick" on him, he rose from the ashes and became a wonderful father and an outstanding public servant. Even after his boys reached adulthood, Biden was forced to confront pain and suffering. As an adult, his younger son struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction. In 2015, Biden's older son died of brain cancer. What do Joe's close friends say about him? They say that he is the most optimistic, and the most compassionate, man that they know.

The trademark of President Trump, Biden's opponent in the 2020 election, is a total lack of compassion. Time and time again, on the campaign trail and in the White House, Trump has shown that he is absolutely unable to exhibit empathy. He is deeply flawed. It's quite obvious that Trump does not care about people. Even his "friends" say that Trump only cares about himself. Trump has never experienced the personal growth that comes from experiencing trauma and enduring pain. Before becoming president, Trump had no record of public service. He's never had any interest in serving others. Trump only serves one master --- himself.

If you haven't voted yet, please ponder these points. These points help explain why Trump's first term has increased suffering and division in America. In my view, these points also explain why Trump should not be reelected. Isn't it time for another president who cares about people? Wouldn't that be nice? Don't you want a president who really cares about you, and who really wants to make America a better place for all of us?

Ch. 6, Pt. 1: The White Boat - Xi Ming

The seat behind the steering wheel was empty. The driver stood in the sand next to an old man in a white robe. As I walked up the aisle toward the front door of the bus, I looked out the window at the two men. The white robe covering the torso, arms, and legs of the old man was a stark contrast with the black skin of his face and hands. Each time the white-robed man made a comment, he flashed a broad smile at the younger man, who not long before had brought the bus to a halt on a flat, sandy lot near Podor’s principal tourist attraction, a 19th century French fort. The trip, which had begun in St. Louis 120 miles to the south, had lasted five hours due to detours on narrow, often bumpy, sometimes unpaved roads. But it was done.

I stopped at the top of the stairwell leading down to the open door and the arid landscape. As I looked at the sandy ground, I could feel the heat rising. I glanced at my digital watch. 6:47PM. I became aware of a fatigue in my head, neck, and shoulders.

Lomax remained sitting in his seat in the fifth row of the bus, bent over his laptop. I shifted my gaze back to the open door, looking into the twilight. The last rays of a setting sun, I hoped, would give way to a cooler darkness.

The two African men standing in the sand began talking louder, making gestures with their hands. The older man was giving advice, I thought, to the younger man, who looked not only tired but also irritated.

Behind the men at the edge of the river, I could see the large boat, the Bou el Mogdad, a 200-foot-long vessel which had five levels featuring an indoor restaurant, outdoor lounge, two bars, a massage room, and a pool.

I carried my backpack in one hand and, in the other, an iPhone, with which I had just finished sending text messages to Washington, D.C., and Accra, Ghana. Macky with assistance from two crew members from the Bou el Mogdad already had moved the large luggage from bus to boat. All of the tour-group members, with the exception of Lomax, Hercule, and Delphine, had boarded the boat.

Lomax closed the laptop, stood up, and inserted his computer and camera into a large backpack. I noticed the white Styrofoam box, which now held 12 empty bottles of beer, occupying a seat in the row behind him. The Fulani man who worked as the day-shift manager at Hôtel de La Résidence had told us to leave the box with empty bottles on the bus. He would pick them up when the driver returned to Rue Blaise Diagne in the French colonial quarter.

“I just finished organizing all of the images I took on the way here,” Lomax said, adjusting the straps of his backpack. “I noticed two photos of the Chinese man at the airport and one of him at the Lampsar Lodge.”

Bou el Mogdad

Lomax glanced back at Hercule, who was asleep in his seat on the aisle in the fourth row. In the seat next to him, Delphine was turning the page of a paper-back book. She looked up, glancing from Lomax to me.

“I have a feeling we’ll see him again,” Lomax added, referring to the Chinese man while glancing out the open door at the two Africans standing in the twilight. The two men were staring back at us. They wanted to know what we were still doing on the bus. Only then did I realize the driver was waiting for us to leave so he himself could leave.

Suddenly, Hercule opened his eyes, jerking his head up. He looked at his wife, who closed her book and put it into a bag on the floor next to her feet.

“Shall we step down from the bus and get on the boat now?” Delphine asked in French, placing a hand on Hercule’s arm. “I wanted to let you sleep,” she said. “I knew you were tired and needed the rest.” Hercule broke into a wide grin when he noticed Lomax and me.

“Go on ahead,” Delphine said in English, looking at Lomax and me also. “We’ll join you on the boat soon.”

Outside the hot, dry air of the desert night enveloped everyone. I set my backpack down in the sand in front of the two African men, removed a 1,000-CFA-franc bill from the pouch hanging from my neck, and handed the bill to the younger man. Lomax, too, following closely, extended a bill toward the driver. It was he, not the old man, who flashed a broad smile.

“Hurry up!” a voice shouted in English. “Dinner in 45 minutes!”

I looked up. Madeleine stood on the top level of the boat, looking down. She had a cocktail in one hand. With her other hand, she grasped a white, metal railing. Next to Madeleine stood Sylvie, who also had a cocktail in one hand. Sylvie, though, was looking over her shoulder. She appeared to be talking with someone behind her I couldn’t see.

Lomax and I stepped onto the narrow ramp connecting the sandy wharf to the large boat. Macky waited, one foot on the edge of the boat, the other on the ramp.

“Follow me,” Macky said in English, turning into a passageway which was open to the desert air and extended the length of the first level of the boat. He started to go up a staircase to a second level. He paused, though, seemingly struggling to find the words he wanted. Finally, switching to French, he said, “I already placed your luggage in your room.”

“Where’s your room?” Madeline shouted, still looking down. “Come to the bar on the top deck and have a lemon and gin cocktail!”

Two Men

But Lomax and I already had crossed the ramp and started following Macky up the wooden staircase. The light from the setting sun still illuminated the orange, pink, and blue pastels of the colonial buildings facing the wharf, though, revealing a stark contrast with the deep green of the river and the light green of a lone palm tree here and there along the river bank.

“Your room is on the third level overlooking the pool,” Macky said, glancing over his shoulder and smiling. It was clear he approved of our choice of accommodation. Of course, as I knew, the room was assigned to us by accident.

“It’s hot, Macky,” Lomax replied. “We’ll just put our packs down in the room, and then you can show us the bar on the top deck.” Lomax paused, looking to his left at the flat, sandy field where the bus had been parked not even a minute before. It was gone. It seemed almost impossible. The driver, apparently, had moved the bus silently away from the wharf and somewhere near the old fort, which was now a museum.

At the top of the stairs, Macky turned right onto the second level of the boat, and Lomax and I followed him down another passageway which also was open to the desert air and extended the length of the boat. When we reached the end of the passageway, we encountered another set of stairs, this one of made of steel and painted white.

“Your room is right there,” Macky said, pointing to the top of the white stairs and starting to move up them. The young man, who was no older than 20 but who could have been as young as 17, glanced over his shoulder and smiled at us again.

I took the key to the room from Macky, slipped it into the lock on the door made of beautifully polished wood, and pushed open the door. I stepped into the room. I felt Macky by my side. But Lomax was nowhere to be seen. He had disappeared down the narrow passageway in the direction of another set of stairs, which, I assumed, led to the bar on the top deck, open to the night air.

I understood immediately the reason Lomax had pushed ahead to the bar on the top deck, where Madeleine and Sylvie drank lemon and gin cocktails in the cooler night air. Inside the room, it was hotter than hell. The two beds, though, with their light red satin covers and their white sheets and pillow cases, appeared freshly laundered, almost elegant in the soft light of the dying day. The state room, called the front luxury suite by the river-boat company, was spacious and attractive, unlike the musty, run-down room at our previous resting place, Hôtel de La Résidence, in St. Louis.

No one had turned on the air conditioning, and heat from the desert sun, beating down all day long, had filled the room. I flipped a switch by the door. A whirling sound started up. It came from a large AC unit in one corner of the room. Immediately, a blast of cold air pierced the layers of hot air. Macky opened his mouth, clapped his hands, and bowed from the waist.

Suite, Bou el Mogdad

I put two bills in Macky’s hand, turned around, and exited the room, following in Lomax’s footsteps and leaving the room on the 3rd level of the boat under the young porter’s supervision.

Hurrying up the stairs and looking down to my right at the sandy wharf and a narrow strip of two-story, faded-yellow buildings outlined in the dim, dusty light, I slipped on the 2nd step from the top and banged my shin and nearly fell to my knees. At the top of the stairs looking down at me and standing just in front of Madeleine was a medium-sized black man with closely cropped hair and a round face who reached down and with surprising strength pulled me upright again in one motion.

Embarrassed by my mistake and shocked by a sharp pain, I hurriedly stood up on the deck, allowing myself to be distracted by the view before me: a beautifully restored, white boat on a tranquil, green river next to a golden, desert town.

“Did you hurt yourself?” Madeleine asked in a soft voice. “These metal stairs are slippery at times. They can be dangerous.”

“No, I didn’t hurt myself,” I replied, realizing I was on the verge of collapsing in pain but attempting to ignore the pain and minimize the accident to Madeleine and any other witness to the event.

I examined the face of the black man, who guided me to a chair at a table next to a bar. The entire area was lit up by small, yellow light bulbs attached at intervals to the waist-high white railing enclosing the top deck. I recognized the man who now began talking to me.

“Something cold to drink?” asked Baaba Maal, the most famous musician in West Africa. His English was not bad. “Cocktail with fruit juice and ice? Beer?”

Over Baaba Maal’s shoulder I could see Madeleine wearing a sleek white dress with patterns of crimson and gold. Behind Madeleine and towering over her, Sylvie, her dark face displaying an expression of concern, stared at my leg. When I looked down at my right leg, I saw a patch of blood expanding across the fabric of my pants below my knee. Then I felt the pain.

“Let’s take a look,” said Sylvie, a doctor in Combs-la-Ville, a suburb of Paris. She squatted in front of me and lifted the nylon fabric of my right pants’ leg up to my knee. “The cut is about half an inch deep and three inches long, causing a rather large flow of blood,” she commented, accepting a towel from the bartender, who had rushed over upon seeing Baaba Maal and Sylvie bent over me. “You need to lie down,” she added, looking into my face for a moment before glancing to one side of the deck and pointing at a couch next to the railing, “and we need to elevate your leg on that couch.”

Sylvie picked me up and carried me toward the couch on which the Chinese couple sat holding glasses of red wine. The thought occurred to me that beyond the couch on the other side of the railing lay the river 30 feet below. It would be a long drop if I accidentally rolled off the couch and tumbled through the railing. The moon, I noticed, was rising in the east over its reflection on the water.

Top Deck, Bou el Mogdad

Sylvie—her athleticism was obvious—carried me to the couch in two strides.

“Merci,” Sylvie said as the Chinese woman and Chinese man quickly stood up from the couch, stepped away from it, and stood watching. Then Sylvie, lowering me gently onto the couch, uttered a statement in Mandarin. She must have thought she was back in Beijing during her adolescence as she addressed the Chinese couple and, at the same time, a rapidly growing sense of urgency.

The Chinese woman and the Chinese man looked at each other in surprise, and the man spoke words in Mandarin to the woman. She responded with her own words in Mandarin, and then she shrugged.

“I’m a doctor,” the Chinese woman said, now lapsing into French for addressing Sylvie. The Chinese doctor had turned her head to address Sylvie. Now she turned it back to address the Chinese man. “My assistant, Mr. Huang, and I will clean your friend’s leg, and I will sew up the wound. If I give you a syringe and some morphine, can you inject him?”

Sylvie responded in Mandarin to the Chinese couple before switching to French.

“I don’t have my medical bag with me,” Sylvie said to Madeleine. “It’s in our room,” she continued, removing a key from her pocket and handing it to her friend. “Can you send Macky to bring the bag to me?”

Madeleine tossed the key to Macky, standing next to the bartender a few feet from the couch.

“There’s no time,” the Chinese woman said in English, coming close to me and looking into my face. “He is going into shock. We have our medical bag with us. You don’t need your bag.”

I was losing consciousness.

“Do you want a shot for the pain?” the Chinese woman asked, still speaking in English and looking into my face. I couldn’t focus on what she said. I didn’t reply. Although I tried to speak, I couldn’t.

The Chinese man stepped forward.

“My colleague, Xi Ming, is a surgeon,” the man said, using English. “Also a major in the People’s Liberation Army. She has performed thousands of operations and has enjoyed great success.” He repeated his words, this time speaking in French.

I felt cold. My vision grew dim.

“Here is our medical bag,” the Chinese man said in English, placing a thick leather valise into the hands of the Chinese woman. “I’m trained in trauma care as well. I carry all of our medical supplies in this bag.”

The Chinese woman, a short, slender person, took the bag, opened it, and pulled out a roll of gauze and a vial of antiseptic. She gave the items to the Chinese man, and he started to clean my leg after rolling up the pants leg above my knee. Then she took out a syringe and a vial from the leather bag and handed them to Sylvie.

French Woman

“You can give him a shot of morphine,” the Chinese woman said to Sylvie, who started to fill the syringe. “I will prepare to sew up his wound,” added the Chinese doctor, who had taken a needle from the medical bag and started threading it in the dim light. Out of nowhere she produced a small but powerful light and attached it to her forehead with an elastic band. “I can work under any conditions,” she said, “even here.”

At that moment, a short, overweight woman wearing a large, floppy-brimmed hat and diamond rings, stepped into the circle of light.

“I’m a massage therapist,” the woman announced in English. “I agree the doctor from China is the best person to sew up the leg of the American. But I also suggest he should place himself under my supervision for the next few days. I’m an expert in Rolfing and other physical therapies. I guarantee the full recovery of the American. He will re-gain the use of his leg within three days under my care.”

Ricardo, standing behind Sylvie and next to Madeleine, studied the splash of bourbon in his glass for a moment and then, with mouth open, stared at the woman appearing out of nowhere.

“Jesus,” Ricardo said, “Who is she?”

Madeleine started to laugh then caught herself.

“Her dress looks like she slept in it,” Madeleine said.

Sylvie injected the morphine into my arm. My body relaxed; I unclenched my jaw, and I could see again.

A few feet from the bar stood Baaba Maal and Sofi, the apprentice designer. To one side was Raphael, his round eyeglasses glinting in the light cast by the small bulbs hanging from the canvas awning. Directly above me, in a gap between two pieces of the canvas, I could see the first stars of the night in the black sky.

But I focused my gaze on the head of the Chinese doctor, who was bent over my leg intent on sewing up the wound. She was working furiously, but I couldn’t see or feel what she was doing. I could see, though, that my right leg was bent at the knee, with my right foot planted flat on the couch.

The Chinese doctor hovered over my leg, focusing on the stitches she was inserting and periodically straightening the leg. She was confirming the stitches were secure while loosening the muscles in my leg so she could sew up the wound faster. The Chinese man bent over her, almost touching her head with his head, wiping with antiseptic the same areas on which she operated with her tools. They worked in concert, four hands together, seemingly controlled by one consciousness.

To one side of me, I was aware of Hercule, who was talking with his wife, Delphine, about the dinner menu they had seen. Also I heard Madeleine saying to Sylvie that Baaba Maal, Sofi, and her cousin would be performing after dinner. Now I was worried about how I would get down to the restaurant on the bottom deck of the boat for dinner. And afterward how could I get back up to the top deck again to hear the music? I doubted Sylvie would be able to carry me down each level of the boat and then back up again.

Meeting

When the Chinese doctor finished stitching up my leg, she sat up straight and peeled off the light attached to her head. The Chinese man, standing up, took the needle, inserted it into a small pouch, and placed the pouch back inside the black leather bag.

“C’est fini,” the doctor announced. Immediately, Sylvie leaned over me, lifted me into her arms, and carried me toward the same slick, metal stairs on which I had tripped and fallen. She started down the stairs.

“Don’t worry,” Sylvie remarked. “I got you.” She paused. “I won’t stumble or trip, but you have to relax and stay still.” She paused again, looking into my face. “You know, you’re not very heavy.”

We passed the third level of the boat. Sylvie asked if I needed to stop at my cabin. I shook my head. I wanted to go to dinner. Finally, we arrived in the dining room, located on the bottom deck, a large space with polished wood paneling on all of the walls and with large windows open to the side passageways, the white rectangular railings, and the blue-green waters of the river just beyond the railings.

Sylvie placed me in a chair at a round table set with ornate silver eating utensils and large curved glasses, some filled with wine—a Burgundy from Alsace-Lorraine, according to the menu—and others filled with ice water. She took a seat to my right. We sat with our backs to a window which opened onto the wharf and, in the middle ground, a series of two-story colonial buildings.

Following Sylvie and me into the room, Madeleine settled into a chair on my left. Hercule and Delphine, also entering the room at that moment, sat down in another pair of chairs at our table.

I was in bad need of a drink. I picked up the glass of Burgundy before me and drank its contents in two gulps. Then I reached over, picked up a glass of red wine in front of Madeleine, and drained its contents too. It was obvious I was nervous. After the Chinese doctor had stitched me up and after Sylvie had carried me down the stairs to the dining room, I felt I had used up all of my luck in a matter of minutes. My leg was numb. I was afraid to reach down and run my fingers over the row of stitches. But I almost couldn’t control myself. I was upset, and I wanted to understand more clearly what had happened to me.

When the Chinese doctor and her assistant arrived in the dining room, Sylvie summoned an attendant and instructed the young African man to seat the two Chinese at our table. Lomax, who had slipped into another seat at the table unnoticed, poured two glasses of Burgundy for the Chinese doctor and her assistant before re-filling the glasses in front of Madeleine and me.

“No more wine for him,” Madeleine said, giving me a sharp look as I drank a third glass of wine just as quickly as the previous two.

Dining Room, Bou el Mogdad

I felt dizzy.

The short, chubby woman with the big hat and diamond rings entered the room, asked the attendant to bring her a chair, and instructed him to set a place for her between the Chinese doctor and her assistant, directly across the table from me.

Ricardo, who was passing behind me as he approached another, smaller table close by, laughed.

“That woman is pretty aggressive,” he said.

“Don’t talk so loud,” Madeleine said, taking a large swallow of Burgundy. Sylvie, listening, just smiled and extended her wine glass, prompting Madeleine to fill it with red wine from the bottle.

“Let’s make a toast,” Sylvie announced in French, looking at the Chinese woman. Everyone picked up a glass. “To a surgeon who can work in the dark,” Sylvie proclaimed in a raised voice.

After setting my wine glass back down on the table, I heard a noise through the open window behind me and turned to see Macky on the wharf with a zip-up dress case hanging from a baggage rack. Several silk dresses in different colors were visible through the transparent material of the suitcase.

Baaba Maal stood up from his table a few feet from ours and leaned through the open window. Holding a bottle of orange Fanta in one hand, he shouted at Macky, who was standing on the wharf, and then at Sofi, who had just appeared behind Macky. But evidently neither Macky, staring back at Baaba Maal with his mouth open, nor Sofi, shouting a question, understood what the musician wanted.

“What’s he saying to Macky and Sofi?” I asked, looking at Sylvie.

“How should I know?” Sylvie replied. “I don’t speak Pulaar. Ask Raphael.”

Raphael, who was sitting at Baaba Maal’s table, overheard my question to Sylvie.

“Baaba Maal is trying to tell Sofi what dress to wear for the performance after dinner,” Raphael said in English.

Ricardo, then, stood up from his table and leaned through the window.

“Wear the yellow dress,” Ricardo shouted in Wolof, the other principal native language spoken by the peoples of northeastern Senegal.

Sofi ducked behind the fabrics hanging from the rack.

Baaba Maal, laughing at Ricardo, sat back down in his seat, finished the orange soda in his hand, and picked up a piece of bread.

“Sofi understands,” Ricardo explained, leaning over Sylvie’s shoulder. “My language teacher at Gaston Berger University knows Sofi well.”

Now Sofi stood in front of the clothes rack and held up two yellow dresses, one in each hand. Macky, who had come to Sofi’s side, gave a thumbs-up signal in return.

Macky took the two dresses from Sofi with one hand, gestured to the ramp leading to the Bou el Mogdad with his other hand, and jumped onto the ramp. Then, with his free hand, Macky beckoned to Sofi to follow him onto the ramp, and the two of them disappeared out of sight crossing the ramp.

I gazed in the direction of the French colonial buildings about 50 feet behind the place where Macky and Sofi had been standing and noticed the buildings had become a ghostly white in the deepening darkness. The picturesque buildings, rising out of the sand behind the wharf, suggested an ancient motif. I expected a memorable performance from Baaba Maal, Sofi, and her cousin in a few minutes.

Jughead Jones sat in his booth at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe and fought a war with his baser urges. He itched to take his phone out of his pocket. To relive the triumphs of his evening.

But he had deadlines to meet. Self-imposed they might be, but they were deadlines nonetheless. He hovered his cursor over the apps at the bottom of his screen, then opened the word document he’d been typing in earlier.

“don’t know any better — or they’re old and they don’t want to know any better. This story is about a town, a small town and the people who live in the town, and work there, and fall in love there, get married there, have children there, and yes, even die there.

At a certain point, though, you look close enough — and you start seeing the shadows underneath the town. And sometimes…the shadows take over. And you’re living in this place you don’t recognize anymore. And you’re feeling a lot of things, but safe isn’t one them.

The name of this town is Riverdale.

And our story begins, I guess, with what the Blossom twins did this summer. On the fourth of July, just after dawn, Jason and Cheryl Blossom drove out to Sweetwater River for an early morning boat-ride. The next thing we know happened for sure is that Dilton Doiley, who was leading Riverdale’s Boy Scout Troop on a bird-watching expedition, came upon.

Riverdale Police dragged the river for Jason’s body, but hours later, still nothing…

Needless to say, there were no fireworks in Riverdale that night. A week later, the Blossom family buried an empty casket, and Jason’s death was ruled an accident, as the story Cheryl told made the rounds.

That Cheryl saw a ribbon in the water, and Jason reached down to get it, and accidentally tipped the boat, and panicked, and drowned which is super-weird, because Jason was captain of almost every sports team at Riverdale High, including water polo. Not that anyone examined those facts too closely, or asked too many questions. See, the Blossoms had their tendrils wrapped around the entire town — no one wanted to make enemies o”

It was not his best work. It read like the voiceover of a supersaturated period piece rather than the tightly controlled, forensically measured prose he was going for. But he’d written and rewritten the beginning of this chapter more than a dozen times. He would get to the end of it tonight if it killed him. He would find out what happened next.

Then he caved and opened Photos. Maybe he could—

The bell over the door jingled and Jughead looked up to see who’d come in. He quickly toggled his windows and pulled Word back up.

He opened a new document: “It was midnight when my old friend Archie Andrews arrived at the one place in town that was still open. He was looking for the girl next door. Instead, he found me.”

Archie Andrews’s bowtie had come untied and his shirt was half-untucked. His hair looked like a drunk girl had been running her fingers through it. She probably had. Jughead watched Archie’s eyes as they seemed to drift toward his booth. Their booth. He ignored the feeling that settled in his stomach. He crossed his arms on the table in front of him and frowned.

“Hey, Pop. Betty hasn’t come in tonight, has she?”

“No. Just the nighthawk’s in tonight.” Pop inflected the first syllable of ‘nighthawk’ as he nodded toward Jughead.

He groaned internally. Did a more banal reference exist?

“Thanks.” Archie hesitated.

“Uh, can I sit, Jughead?”

“If you want.” He did.

“What are you working on?”

“My novel. It’s about this summer, and Jason Blossom.” Good. Evil. Innocence. Guilt. Sin. Obsession. Endings.

Archie tapped the bottom of his phone against the table. “Seventeen years old, and how will he be remembered? As captain of the water polo team?” His eyebrows approached his hairline.

“The Aquaholics? Considering how he died, probably not.”

“No, what I mean is, was he doing everything he was supposed to do? Everything he wanted. I mean, did he even know what that was?”

Jughead flared his nostrils and turned his eyes from Archie to the window. He was talking about Betty. Or that new dark-haired girl. Or, hell, about switching what brand of hair gel he used. But he could have been talking about Jughead. He could have been talking about how Jughead had spent his evening, what he’d done instead of going to the dance and the subsequent Cheryl Blossom-sponsored mating ritual.

“Coach Clayton was in here talking to Pop Tate. Varsity. Does that make you—what—Mr. Popular-Football-God now?”

“No.” Archie stared at the table. “In fact, I’m kind of terrified I lost my best friend tonight.”

“If you mean Betty, whatever happened, just talk to her, man. It would go a long way. Would’ve gone a long way with me.”

Archie nodded. Jughead hoped that would be enough to push him back out the door. It was.

Jughead needed Archie to leave so he could get back to what he was doing. But he also needed Archie to fix whatever he’d done to Betty. The drama of Archie and Betty was the narrative structure to his own life. It was the story he was always writing and deleting and reconstructing. Archie Andrews was the protagonist. Jughead Jones was the understudy. They were the only two people he trusted with Betty Cooper. He refused to contemplate what would happen if Archie broke Betty.

When Betty had left Riverdale, that early morning in the middle of June, Jughead had, as with all the important moments in her life, been on hand to observe. He had said goodbye to her the night before, with a projection-booth viewing of Picnic. He knew she was saving her final goodbye for Archie, so he got up at six am and camped out in the treehouse before Fred was up to see him through the kitchen windows.

That morning, her hair had been in a braid rather than a ponytail. She looked impossibly beautiful. Archie looked half-asleep. He watched them hug, watched Archie let go of her quickly, watched Betty cling to his shoulders a beat longer. Then he watched Archie go back to bed. Later that day, they were supposed to marathon the new Call of Duty.

That morning, he watched Betty Cooper drive away from him, and Archie Andrews, and Riverdale — that Riverdale that was and no more could be — in a wood-panelled station wagon.

When he’d watched her melt into the vanishing point, he headed to Sweetwater River. His backpack held his laptop, a notebook and pen, two packets of pop tarts, a small fishing knife. He knew words weren’t going to be enough to fill his chest cavity. He needed to fill it before he came back for the video games.

They never played Call of Duty that day. Or any of the days that came after.

When Archie had left, Jughead reached into his pocket to pull out the cord and phone stashed there. He plugged them in and pulled Photos back up.

He began clicking through the pictures as they uploaded. The first framed Betty’s window. He’d nearly fallen off the ladder trying to lean back far enough to take it. Through the fluttering curtains, her room was as pristine as it had been the months she’d been gone. But for the white cardigan discarded on her bed and the tube of lipstick lying on its side on her desk.

The next photos showed the inside of her closet, his hand pushing back some of the clothing. He catalogued each new piece. The bright blue of her cheerleading uniform interrupted a gradient of pastels and and creams.

Her hamper contained three pairs of underwear, two bras—one a sports bra, one pale purple lace, one of the ubiquitous white sweaters, black shorts, and a white baseball tee with yellow sleeves. He photographed them on her bed with the hamper balanced teetering off the corner.

In her bathroom, five orange pill bottles stood where there used to only be four. Two were the same, though one bore the label of a pharmacy in California and the other Riverdale Rx. They were almost entirely full.

In her trash can, he could see a used make up wipe, an empty container of acne treatment from the skincare brand he knew she liked, and three cotton balls, crumpled, moist, bloody.

He took a picture.

He took the knife out of his pocket, scored four smalls cuts into his palm and let them drip onto the cotton ball. He took another picture.

He fingered the panties in his other pocket and clicked back to his albums. He saved the new photos under ‘August 2016.’ The July album was despairingly empty, containing only two pictures: a single view of her deserted bedroom and a side view of her closet, so he could see what she’d taken with her and imagine what she looked like.

He brought the word document back, deleted the section he’d been staring at before, and replaced it.

“Our story is about a town. A small town. And the people who live in the town. From a distance, it presents itself like so many other small towns, all over the world.

Safe. Decent. Innocent. Get closer though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.

The name of our town is Riverdale.

And our story begins, I guess, with what the Blossom twins did this summer. His photos had finished uploading. He unplugged the USB cord and unlocked his phone. He selected one picture to remain and deleted the rest.

In his hand, an image of a photograph of the two of them at eighth grade graduation stared up at him. Betty was smiling at something off-camera—Archie taking the photo. Jughead was looking at her. It had been tucked in the side of her mirror in early June. It was gone in July. Now, it had returned.

RFA+Saeran & V x MC - Save Me (Pt. 2)

here’s part 2 :) I hope you guys like it <3

Jumin:

It’s funny how the moments before death consumes you can seem to last longer than a lifetime. It was a rather ridiculous thing to believe, yet there you were, gasping for air, struggling to keep your eyes on the man drifting away from you for what felt like the longest hour of your life. He was screaming for them to turn back, for them to save you too. But not everything can be done according to his will, now can it?

Jumin and you were supposed to be going to Hawaii. Instead, you took a detour right into the Pacific Ocean. There was no one to blame, no one to hate. It was an accident, and more than anything, it was your choice to save him, to save them. There was a malfunction with the aircraft resulting in an emergency landing. Of course, all the passengers should’ve been able to get away from the plane safely, but that was obviously not the case. The other lifeboat, only half full, was pulled away by a strong current, leaving the all remaining passengers to board one. It was overflowed with children, parents and elders who were sobbing for mercy. It was cold, it was wet, it was scary. Another person and the boat would sink, so you had to make the sacrifice, right? For the greater good, for the people, the children and most of all... for Jumin.

There was no way you’d allow anyone else to leave the lifeboat. As much as you didn’t know them, they were people who needed to live. So you jumped off. It was amazing how a few kilograms here and there could make it float once more. The water pierced your skin, an unforgiving cold seeping deep into your bones.

It broke your heart to hear Jumin’s desperate screams. He was pushing for the boat to turn back and pick you up. He even wanted to jump off to save you but luckily, a few men blocked his attempt.

“MC, NO! PLEASE, TURN BACK, WE CAN’T LEAVE HER, WE HAVE TO TAKE HER WITH US.” his voice cracked, there was so much desperation. Tears streamed down his face non-stop. He looked like he lost his mind.

It was odd watching Jumin become so irrational, watching him lash out against the others. In a way, it calmed your strained nerves, giving you a strange warmth that fluttered from the inside out. Watching him disappear into the distance was upsetting, but soon enough, this feeling subsided into nothingness as you succumbed into the dark ocean waters.

There was no way you could’ve just stood back and watched. He was precious to you, so precious that he was worth more than your own life. So when it came to saving him from a fatal stab… it was more like instinct than choice.

Somehow, the agency found him. After his ultimate betrayal, it was obvious that they’d come after him. How they found the both of you was... impossible to know. Perhaps they got insider's scoop, either way, it didn’t matter. What mattered was Seven and keeping him alive. He was needed in the world - he had a role to fulfill, he was responsible for the entire RFA, he had to repay his brother, to take care of him, to give him love and support. So you did what you had to do. From the corner of your eye, you saw an agent came in from the side, aiming for his torso with a blade. It was a rash movement, a little stiff, but it did the job and you made it just in time. Pulling Seven further from the attacker, you replaced his spot with yours and took the blow on the side of your hip.

Strangely, there was only one agent, and as you collapsed to the floor, heaving in pain, he lunged for Seven who was now too shocked to move. He faltered at first, but successfully took the agent down who was no match for Seven. As your sight began to blur and fade away, you heard his voice. It was soothing and calm.

“It’s okay, MC, you’ll be okay, okay?” he said, picking you up. “I’m taking you to the hospital right now. Just hang in there. We’re going to make it.”

You winced in pain as he lifted you off the ground and it cleared your clouded mind for a second. Maybe it was you hallucinating, but Seven’s face was twisted in fear and uncertainty - much too different from his reassuring words for you to believe that it was not your imagination.

Saeran:

It was fate. To live and to die for the one you love, isn’t that all anyone ever wants in life? Saeran had experienced much too little of the world to die. In contrast, you were satisfied with everything that you’d done, the only regret being that you wouldn’t get to spend the rest of your life with him. When it came to it, trading your life for his seemed like nothing compared to allowing him spend time with other people. He needed to live, to spend time with his brother, to become… human again. It was something he deserved, so anyone would agree that what you did was right.

After Saeran had left Mint Eye, he was a victim to many attacks from previous cult members for “betraying paradise.” It was inevitable, but this time was different. This particular man was a new kind of insane. Every jab he made at Saeran was fatal, it was only a matter of time before he was covered in cuts and scratches. You had to do something, anything to protect him, so you acted on impulse, pushing Saeran away from the next jab and pulling the man towards you instead.

The sensation was strange. Before a pang of pain hit you, you felt the cool blade slide through you skin into your body, it was odd and interesting at the same time. But that was before the man pushed you onto the asphalt, lumbering away in fear. You blood oozed out of the wound, tainting the floor a dark red. You scrunched your face in attempt to drown out the pain, but you were all ears to what Saeran had to say.

He was screaming. It wasn’t out of fear or pain or even upset. It was pure shock. Maybe it was a bad idea in the end, for you to sacrifice yourself. You’d only thought of his life and how it would benefit him for sure - but you forgot to include the part of possible traumatization.

“M-MC! NO! WHAT IS HAPPENING WHA- OH MY GOD OH MY GOD- I- MC WHY DID YOU…! WHY?! WHY! WHY! WHY!” he was going into emotional overdrive, panic rising at the bottom of his stomach, churning into unimaginable anxiety. You made a mistake - a terrible mistake.

Nobody knew that it would end like this. How in the end, it’d be you to get hurt. In their eyes, you did nothing wrong. In fact, maybe you were the only one who ever did anything right, the only one who was innocent.

But you wanted to protect them, all of them from harm's way. Whether that harm be in the form of media, business scams, private agency’s, self-proclaimed paradise… or even someone as cynical as Rika.

It was a quick hit, oddly not as painful as you had imagined. The immediacy of the shot was a shock to everyone, even yourself, actually. You felt yourself fall against Jihyun’s tense body. His voice loud in your ear the moment you fell to the ground. He held you in his arms, trembling with shock. He couldn’t believe what just happened, even Rika, herself couldn’t understand the situation.

It was as if the gun shot itself had sent the room into chaos. Everyone was screaming, but soon enough the entirety of the RFA were huddled around you, tears dripping off the chins of all their faces. But the only one that was seared into your memory was Jihyun’s. The way his body trembled as he held yours close to his, the way he put his hand above your wound much too afraid to touch it. Everything about him was angelic, his blue hair, though splattered with red looked soft; his face, while twisted with sadness and pain was still handsome and beautiful.

“M-MC… why? Why did you save me? I don’t deserve you. I can’t-” placing your hand on his cheek, you cut him off and offered him a weak shake of your head. Gazing deep into his light blue eyes, you made sure he understood that he very well deserved you, and that you had no regrets. Saving him was saving the RFA, and that meant more to you than your life.
