(Part 4) The next tenipuri team is St. Rudolph! Here's my first impression of the St. Rudolph team. Only few of them made an appearance in Gakupuri so I didn't know anything about the other remaining members (the guy with the red headband looks cool tho) That goes the same for the next several team, just a few focus characters and one background character.
Kinda sad knowing Yuta felt like he's living in his brother's shadow and was frustrated to the point he transferred school, even though his brother and his friends really cares for him. It's a good thing Gakupuri took place after he'd finally realized that there are people who sees him for who he is and he's not angry at his brother anymore.
Not surprised at the fact that Mizuki's the one who made their conflict worst and even trained Yuta to use dangerous tennis moves to win matches, but at least Fuji kicked Mizuki's ass and he became a better person. (After all of that, it's hilarious watching Mizuki trying to challenge Fuji into another match but Fuji straight up ignores him or just says "who are u?" LMAO) I didn't know ANY OF THAT when i first watched Mizuki's route in Gakupuri and was surprised by how much of a villain he was in the anime. Fuji and Mizuki didn't even show much hostility towards each other in that game. Other than that, he's a pretty hilarious character who appears elegant and is very cunning but really cares for his teammates (and he kinda reminds me of Azul from Twisted Wonderland, especially the way he speaks)
(Speaking of the way he speaks, you guys should hear him talk in yamagata dialect, it's pretty adorable >v<)
(Part 3, 5)

driving me crazy
member | bandmate!seungcheol x reader genre | smut, enemies to lovers word count | 1.3k warnings | reader has a vagina and breasts, unprotected sex (reader is on the pill but be safe irl or i'll hit you), name calling (slut, whore, cumslut, cumdump), cumshot, creampie, masturbation (m), mentions of degredation & humiliation, one mention of spanking. this is pure rough hate sex but it gets really soft at the end notes | so i was writing this in @duhnova's inbox to attack her and all of a sudden i checked how much i'd written and it was fuckin,, over a thousand words?? this isn't really a "fic" per se, it's more like a headcanon (there's no dialogue) but i thought it was long enough to share. i don't know where this came from or how it happened but- enjoy! - june 💒
you and seungcheol are in a band together– maybe he's the guitarist and you sing, and since the day the band formed you've had it out for each other. neither of you are willing to give in to what the other wants, even when you both know you're in the wrong. he wants the chords a certain way? nope, because you need them this way so you can sing them. you want to write your own lyrics for this one song? nope, he criticizes every word.
and the tension just keeps growing and growing until one day it boils over and you find yourself underneath him, back pressed against the sofa in his garage after band practice when everyone else has gone and he's fucking you like you're the last person on earth. pushing his lips to your neck to call you filthy names, things he's never wanted to say to your face before; but something about this time, with his cock splitting you open and you fighting to hold back tears of pleasure because like hell you'd let him get that reaction out of you, he can't help but want to tell you how much of a slut you are. you hate each other, yet you'd let him fuck you like this, hm?
and you'd die before you admit it to him or to yourself, but just this one time with him will completely ruin you for anyone else's cock. no matter how hard you try to forget him and how many shitty tinder hookups you suffer through, he's the only thing on your mind every single time you cum. and so finally you give in, and you come back to him, practically begging him to fuck you again, and he'd be more than happy to oblige because you're the only thing that's been on his mind every time he jerks off after you leave practice, his cock throbbing in his fist and milky white cum splattered all over his hands as he realizes he just moaned your name out loud. so at the end of the day maybe you do still hate each other, but damn if you aren't the best sex each other's had.
so despite how much you supposedly hate each other, now that neither of you can deny how insanely horny you are for each other you're fucking all the time. and i mean all the time. of course, it starts out as only after practice in his garage, and occasionally in his car when practices are at your other bandmates' houses. but one day a couple weeks later when he's fucking you in his bed, on his kitchen counter, even in his front doorway because you're both so impatient you can barely keep your hands off one another long enough for him to shut the door, that's when you realize how fucked you are—metaphorically and literally.
if your friends are shocked at the fact that seungcheol, your literal worst enemy, is suddenly driving you home every night, they don't mention it. there's no way they don't know by now, but you won't hear a peep out of them, because in practices, you're actually… managing to get along with cheol now. it turns out that having the roughest, nastiest (aka best) sex of your life with the man you hate most is doing wonders to relieve the tension between you two; so much so that the only arguments you can muster with him are about how the color of his new guitar looks ugly compared to his old one, or that your singing would be better if you actually looked at the microphone for once instead of looking at him.
by day you're cooperating enough to make music together for once, and by night you're getting fucked like the cumslut you are, cheol slapping your ass and roughly handling your hips into place so he can push into you even deeper so you can feel him completely filling you.
and after a while, you can't even remember the reason why you hated him in the first place. because maybe the tension between you two was just sexual tension all along. getting dicked down like a whore makes you happy, and having his own personal cumdump makes him happy. it's a win for everybody.
one day he's fucking you in his bed after a really successful practice and it's... unusually soft. he's not calling you filthy names or humiliating you for how hard you came from just his fingers. he's holding you so close, praising you for how well you always take his thick cock, squeezing around him so perfectly, so warm and wet and tight just for him and him alone. he's not calling you "his hole" or telling you to crawl across the floor and beg him to allow you to suck his cock. his words come out no more a soft growl by your ear, low moans scattered in between the praises.
and that's the first time you let him cum inside you. you're on the pill and you've both been tested so there's been no reason for him to use a condom any of the times you've been together, but he's always pulled out to cum on your back, your pussy, your stomach, or his favorite place– your face.
but this time when you feel his thrusts start to stutter and he begins to let go of you to slip out of your aching cunt, you just wrap your legs around his waist and pull him back in, whimpering and pleading for him to stay inside, to cum inside, to fill you up and claim you as his. and he can barely stop himself from cumming on the spot as he stumbles into the hardest orgasm of his entire life, spurting rope after rope of liquid into you.
and afterwards, when you're both laying there panting, stuck in a post-orgasmic haze as it begins to dawn on you what just happened, he does something that makes you doubt any of this was even real in the first place, that it was all a dream and you haven't actually been having sex with him on almost a daily basis for nearly the last month. because the seungcheol you know, the seungcheol you hate, would never say this. the seungcheol you used to hate would never own up to anything, would argue about anything and anything and refuse to apologize for his words, no matter how hurtful.
at least, that's what you thought. because now you've realized you never actually hated him, not even before you two were involved like this. you would argue for the sake of arguing just like he would, because that's all you knew how to do around him.
you didn't yet know this side of him; not just the side that makes you cum over and over and refuses to stop until you have to pry his mouth off of your pussy, but the side of him that always gives you rides home, even when the night doesn't end in sex. the side of him that lets you use his shower to clean up afterwards and always leaves a stack of fresh towels out for you that you can tell he warmed up in the dryer. the side of him that, even the first time when you hated each others' guts, asked if it was okay to do something before he did it, because even though he can't stand you, he doesn't want to hurt you intentionally.
so you're laying there on his bed, and he holds you tighter, burying his face into the crook of your neck, and he sighs. and for the first time ever, he says,
"i'm sorry."

Evening Mr. Flansburgh!
I am an aspiring musician! I really want to create my own songs, but since I'm an absolute beginner starting from the ground up, I am soul-crushingly daunted by which skill I should focus on learning first, especially with the amount of resources available to me online (Singing? Lyric writing? Learning a particular instrument? Mixing? Music Theory? etc).
Do you remember what skill(s) you focused on doing first when you were just getting into music, or have any recommendations about the order to do then in?
Much appreciated!
JF: reflecting on it, my experience was extremely organic, slow-evolving and combined so many of my interests and obsessions I am not sure it is necessarily that universal. (For instance I was kinda obsessed with recorded sound before I started writing and recording songs on a tape recorder, which I did for a couple of YEARS before I ever played in front of another human being). So I came to writing songs with some extra skills that actually facilitated my earliest efforts.
An art history professor of mine said "Art is foisting your obsessions on the world" and I think he was right. Another art professor of mine said if you embark on a dozen creative projects, the odds of creating an inspired one greatly increases over simply working on one. I think this is very good advice, and is echoed by a lot of folks writing about the nature of creativity.
If you can't play chords, or move your hands around a keyboard or a fretboard fast enough to play a chord progression, saddle up to a screen with a movie and practice scales so your fingers get stronger. Do it everyday for some time. Then practice toggling back and forth between two chords as quickly as possible. Get a metronome. You know why!
Yes, a song is exactly the confected thing your mentioned in your request--it's a lyric, a melody, a progression, a beat, an evolving musical notion. But those parts are often created at separate times and simply smushed together. It doesn't have to be done in one go, and if the whole enterprise seems odd, or your skill set is underdeveloped in one way or another, assembling a song from the various moving elements might be an easier way to approach it.
(also a couple of days ago someone was asking about singing and I pointed at a few ideas there--essentially taking advantage of these free online vocal warm up videos)
I think you should gather a small clutch of tools--a tape recorder or a DAW that is simple enough to master quickly--there are multitrack recording apps that you can install on your phone that are intuitive. A couple of instruments-a guitar or keyboard, maybe an auto harp.
Find a place to work where you can make noise and not be heard.
I think you should start writing in a physical notebook where you can write down your ideas and revisit them. I wouldn't do it on a computer. It's slow writing, and the screen just creates distractions.
Write a bunch of lyrics without trying to write music: Make one about you but write it like it's about someone else, one about someone else's experience but sing it first person, write one about a group of people. Be positive. Be negative. Be regretful. Be optimistic. Express anger. Be as extreme as you can stand. Experiment in writing in every mode you can think of. Here somebody would write "express your own ideas", but ALL of your ideas will be your own! You are making choices based on musical notions that inspired you, but what comes out of you will almost certainly be different enough, and if it's too close to something else, shimmy it around so it isn't distracting! Write a few chord progressions. (A two chord progression that just sounds interesting going back and forth. A four chord progression. Make a beat, or find a beat online, and write a bass line or just a sequence of single notes on a keyboard or guitar to make a pleasant, evolving line. And see if you can write a "song" or two with a two or four chord verse, and a chorus that is a different chord progression.) Write it down and revisit it! Record it slow. You might want to speed it up later when it's "under your fingers."
Pretty soon you will have all the component of what you need to put lyrics to music. You can also try just singing lyrics over a beat, and then figure out the chords underneath AFTER you have a notion of a melody.
That's enough free advice. Go write some songs!

things that seemed reoccurring this update:
- Meat
- peas
- jelly
- Hibernation
- Eddie's absence
- Acting out a script (Sally mumbling asking if it's her cue and Howdy changing the script of the narrator in Homewarming storybook, characters general interactions with the narrator, different moments in the video, like the Sally and Frank ad break or the song a barely silent night, where the two literally fight over who get to sing, Sally mentions she wrote the lyrics, and Frank says she already has a song. yeah all of these are easy to see as meta goofs in the original material, but it's the fact there's so much of it this update) (of course all this wrap up with the end of the video where Eddie and Frank are obviously acting off script)
- Being alone (Eddie not having any news of anyone and not even seeing anyone outside (which is interesting as the story says that Sally was up in a tree near his home and saw him fret over having nothing to do), Wally saying it's so quiet during Homewarming and it's just he and Home for a while (potentially the show putting out a christmas special and then being on break? can a show do that?), and in the normal website material, the end of "An ode to hibernation", Frank saying "Where all that's left is me", the "me" being a "...me?")
- Welcome Home being used to sell stuff (cigarettes, medicine, eggnog, cereals, and the cookbook lists ingredients that are a specific brand)
(I'm putting under read more my rambling thoughts so you can just reblog the list without having to see them)
so I can't really make sense yet of all the food stuff. Maybe there are cultural elements/expressions I don't know that explains it? But I still find it very interesting how fucking unhinged that cookbook is yet the commercial and the website treat it normally. The cookbook is overall extremely interesting, because some of the recipes seem to actually be written by the characters; Barnaby who only presents you weird hot dog dressings with pictures but no recipe (and all jokes), Frank who lists not just the ingredients but also the material, and overexplain each steps (at least overexplain compared to the other recipes. it's actually interesting to know why you do x or y), and Julie who turns her recipe into a game at the end, and felt a bit harder to follow? anyway.
The cookbook, the Homewarming tradition of hanging a ham in the tree, Santy Claus being said sometimes instead of Santa, the ham for Santa? Once again, the christmas commercials being so casual about some of the weird stuff it says and presents? This almost feels like an alien who only has a blurry grasp of Christmas and what humans enjoy made the cookbook and the live commercial.
Sometimes, Welcome Home feels like it never actually aired and produced things, but we're making it retroactively exist. Something is making it exist. Like a retcon of the universe, "What do you mean you never heard of Welcome Home? No, of course it always existed and was very popular, look at all this old material we find!"
So maybe whatever is making it exist doesn't fully get humans and accidentally creates things that are weird to prove its existence. Like a cookbook that tells you a single pea in a buttered plate is a classic meal, or that of course you give Santa ham on Homewarming! (tbh almost getting an AI weirdness feel)
But in total contrary, in its story, Welcome Home also feels like it always existed, but got somehow completely wiped from people's mind, as something caused its sudden stop, and its characters gained consciousness of what they are and their world. As an existential dread fell on them one after the other, slowly realizing something isn't right. As Eddie felt anxiety and nervousness over no one being there or contacting him, to then having the story acts lightheartedly about it, the narrator saying things have been solved but he doesn't feel it, and suddenly Home is staring at him.
Both "It never existed but the universe is being retcon into it existing" and "it existed but something terrible happened that erased it from peoples mind" seem plausible. If two theories contradict each other, that means there's a third one that needs to be found.
Maybe it existed. Maybe it truly was popular, but something corrupted it, leading to its disappearance. A disappearance so big it stopped to exist. And now the thing that corrupted it is trying to crawl back, make it exist again, but it's making it come back completely off.
Anyway.
Also, I think the show may have been on hold during the Holiday season, "hibernating", and the character who got some self awareness realized that something was off. They're alone because there's nothing new, so no one is there bringing life to the neighborhood.
#welcome home#anyway there is an existential nightmare going on that's for sure#also at one point writing my rambling I thought about metaphor for capitalism#the show gains succes and so there's a push to make money out of it. capitalism is corrupting it until it goes in shambles.#now a few decades later banking on nostalgia to make profit is what big things do#bringing back the thing from your childhood to show it again but it's off because what brought it back is not love for the thing#it's being brought back because of capitalism. the thing that corrupted it in the first place is trying to bring it back.#sorry i still ramble in the tags :x

re: the Fever-era stage gay routines
I'm integrating a previous post into this one so I can cover all of the pre-split years and everything in one place. Again, I'm iffy on the term "stage gay" but idk how else to describe it so here we go.
So Brendon said this quote in 2018: "For our first headline tour I would go up to Ryan our guitar player, and like kiss him on the neck or kiss him on the mouth and he would be so mad. I was like, I just want to kiss you bro."
Ignoring all history & precedent of the way that Brendon tends to exaggerate for effect and often goes for the general idea & how he feels at the moment when looking back rather than actual specific facts... he's still talking about the band's first headlining tour in April 2006. And yeah, that's the only season where I think this quote MIGHT be plausible. If the situation actually played out exactly as Brendon says, then of course that's not ok. But you still can't project that scenario onto literally every part of the Fever era or form your entire perception of a whole era (or an entire work relationship) off of one single interview quote from years later. That's going to leave you with an incredibly distorted understanding of the band's dynamics with each other & fans, Ryan's input and stage presence, and what's actually going on in the pictures you're looking at. Like people are clearly missing so much context if they're able to look at a picture of the IWSNT mic-sharing from summer 2006 and think that it was one-sided sexual harassment (or some kind of actual Ryden thing).
THE EARLY MONTHS
So the guys weren’t super close onstage in late 2005… they were mostly trying to figure out how to even be onstage lol. They watched the bands they were touring with and learned as they went. You could almost see little pieces of each band’s influence show up for a while. Brendon totally modeled himself after Jason Vena in early fall 2005, and then he had clearly been watching William Beckett closely in early 2006 (that influence carried on throughout the year). It was also interesting to watch Brendon navigate what he thought fans wanted or expected when he was an 18-year-old boy thrown into an international spotlight with girls (and boys) screaming “f— me!” at him (one example). It really looked like he learned to play into a role (this is included). And I mean that in terms of being a popular frontman. That’s not even taking into consideration the actual way that Brendon needed to adopt a persona onstage throughout the whole Fever era. Look at the type of songs he had to sing. Both Brendon & Ryan talked a lot in 2005-2006 about how Brendon needed to get into a character onstage to deliver the risque lyrics.
The types of halfhearted moves that Brendon started to make on Ryan by the end of the Truckstops & Statelines tour looked like he was just following the example of bands he’d been watching on tour. Brendon started making bigger moves on Ryan in April once P!ATD had to step up their game for their first headlining tour (which happened 8 months after they played their first show ever). That UK tour had some shows that were bigger than the first half of the summer tour in North America. There were times in 2006 when I felt like P!ATD was more of a UK band than American partially because of how intense the frenzy was over there.
Brendon was still testing different stage personas and figuring things out during this season, and the band still felt like 4 separate guys trying to find their footing. They were talented & good, but there was absolutely a huge shift in the band itself once Jon arrived in May. They finally felt like a strong united group. They went back to their practice space for a while in May to figure out the details of what they wanted their band to be like onstage, rehearse with their two new touring musicians + Lucent Dossier, and re-learn updated versions of their songs. The last half of the Fever era was polished and very intentional... they felt like a different band by June in many ways.
THE SUMMER TOUR
I thought this seemed like the picture that really got the Ryden craze going in summer 2006 (before fans had totally decided on the “Ryden” name – some were saying “Bryan”). It was taken a few days into the summer tour:
There were a ton of new fans arriving during the summer tour, so that picture formed some first impressions. By this summer many fans would basically only ask people to describe the moments when Ryan & Brendon came near each other at a show and every look they shared. People who went to shows would mention how at different points they saw one of the four guys suppress a laugh when the crowd would positively scream if Brendon & Ryan came within two feet of each other.
The Panic guys were well aware of what their fans wanted and what was being said online (for better or worse). Yes, they got annoyed during the last half of the year when fans took things too far or were focused more on Ryden stuff than the music, but it seemed like they also wanted to have fun with a fanbase that they were being increasingly distanced from as they became more & more famous. There were quite a few stories of Brendon and Ryan playing up the Ryden angle at meet & greets throughout the last half of 2006 to make fans laugh or freak out (and Ryan initiated some of that, so it wasn’t purely Brendon). There's more in this post.
The point is that the shows in this tour were very intentional and felt more like watching a theater show than the type of band who interacted with their audience (which was a huge fan complaint this season tbh). Ryan was more confident & comfortable onstage with his new makeup, was actively engaging in mic sharing and playing into what the crowds obviously wanted to see, and seemed like he was largely in control of how the shows would go even if he still sometimes shied away from attention in general onstage.
Ryan & Brendon did continue some of their antics at random international shows in August & October, but it kind of seemed to depend on the audience. Those shows were also a different vibe from the national tours.
NOTHING RHYMES WITH CIRCUS
This season was on a whole other level, so here's a separate post that goes into important detail!!
^^^ seriously, please read.
The creepy leering character that Brendon was playing during the NRWC tour is obviously not his actual personality, nor his typical onstage character for the whole Fever era (although I did see hints of it return during the 2008 Halloween show when Brendon was in his vampire costume lol).
AFTER THE FEVER ERA
The band played a handful of regular shows in 2007 like any other band. They wore jeans and dropped the stage gay & makeup because those elements were part of the Fever-era shows and that era was done now.
Ryan did try to instigate parts of their former routine at the first show in 2007 before the band had found their new direction, though.
Brendon kissed Ryan on the cheek at Bamboozle 2007 when wishing him a happy birthday.
The Pretty. Odd. era was completely different on so many levels. Ryan & Jon largely ran those shows and the new music didn’t require a dramatic frontman in an entertainer/narrator role anymore. Ryan was WAY more confident onstage and would often stroll over to mess with Brendon or share his mic. Ryan was the one who often instigated any interaction. Jon even slapped Brendon’s butt at some shows. A lot of fans would claim that Ryan kissed Brendon’s cheek, but in hindsight I think it’s more likely that he was whispering to Brendon and knew that fans would get overly excited. Also, the moment where Brendon kissed Ryan’s cheek before Mad as Rabbits at Glastonbury was definitely not the norm.
ABOUT THE ROUTINE "RYDEN" MOMENTS IN 2008 (not on the same level as 2006, but still pandering to what fans wanted).
COMMON FEVER ERA MOMENTS

MISC. THOUGHTS
The point of this post is to show that the endless pictures that some people might share of "Ryden" moments or "Brendon sexually harassing Ryan" are often like the same points of the same songs on different nights, or just taken out of context of the actual Fever era. To be clear, I’m not attempting to excuse/explain every single thing Brendon ever did in this post, or attempting to speak for Ryan... idk what he was comfortable with or everything that went down between them.
However, I do think that people who assume Brendon forced Ryan into anything (in any aspect of the band) don’t understand their work relationship or the pre-split band’s dynamics & who had the power. That band was waaaay different than the one that Brendon had in later years. Back then he wasn’t really in a position to pressure Ryan into anything creatively-speaking (more info here). Ryan was shy in interviews, but he was in no way a pushover within the band… and to assume something like that kind of discredits his massive contributions. With the amount of control that Ryan had, I just really don’t think he would have let something so prominent get worked into the shows if he wasn’t ok with it in the first place (let alone instigate it himself sometimes).
Ryan talked a lot in the pre-split years about how he really wanted to challenge fans, push boundaries, do something different, shake things up, and keep experimenting instead of settling into a rut of what was comfortable/familiar. In a Danish interview in October 2006 he said "we do not want to be a safe band, neither with our songs nor our shows."
I thought the stage gay element seemed to loosely fit into those goals & ideas. But at the same time, I don't think it was ever that defined. It felt like it was just a random fun thing & wasn't that deep. Spin asked Ryan if he and Brendon were toying with the idea of bisexuality, which was a bit annoying because their antics obviously weren't that legit or a Serious Statement. I liked Ryan's answer:

Kaoru Interview - Burrn! Japan Vol.23 (Feb 2024)
Interview by You Masuda
FAN TRANSLATION
(Note: This interview was held mid-way through the Phalaris Final tour)
The next person to interview was Kaoru, straight after Die. When I asked Kyo about new material going forward, he simply said, 'Ask Kaoru about that', but to be sure, if there is any member creating the blueprints for future new material, there is no doubt that its Kaoru. Of course, I'm aware that its slightly too soon to be asking such things, but I started the interview hoping to at least pick up a few hints.
ーYou are currently mid-tour, but after finishing both days at Zepp Haneda, how are you feeling about it?
Hmm. Its quite.....exhausting (lol). It consumes a lot of energy, much more than we usually use for live shows. Phalaris has a lot of power packed into it, and you really feel it bearing down on you. I'm not even trying to be that active on stage, but still....its tiring (lol)
ーBy that you mean its something different from physical tiredness?
Yeah, the tone, the content of the show, there is a heaviness to it, its something that you just can't approach half-heartedly.
ーKyo said that the songs are all hard work to sing this time. As for performing, there seems to be a lot of songs that you just can't relax through.
Yeah, its the same when playing. It really questions the type of person who is stood there playing on stage...this isnt the type of stage I can just stand around carelessly on. I mean, not that I'm like that anyway (lol). But there is something about it where I just can't express myself unless I fully throw myself into that world. It feels like a heavy weight crashing down on me for this tour.
ーThis is the third tour in the Phalaris cycle, but I get the feeling the first two rounds were not as heavy as this?
They weren't. The first round was quite tasteful, and in the second round we emphasised the 'live' element of it more, it was like a lighter version. If its too heavy from the beginning, its kinda tough on the audience too.
ーWould you say this is an album with such a heaviness that it requires this kind of considered moderation?
Yeah, but we did think we need to moderate this tour too. If for example, we were to do a single limited live show in a big venue to close Phalaris, that would be even more intense. In the shape of a tour, there are times when we are reaching our absolute limits. Thats how tough it is (lol) It didn't seem right unless each show of the tour encompassed that sense of weight and culmination.
ーIn other words you are almost right at your tipping point?
Yes. If we were to increase the intensity further, there is no doubt that the shows would collapse into chaos...which may be ok in some sense, but then we would be unable to continue touring properly.
ーYou touched on this earlier, but don't you have any plans to do a seperate finale for Phalaris in a big venue at any point?
No, we aren't thinking about that, not for now at least. It doesn't mean there is a zero percent chance, but recently there just isnt the venue availability for that kind of thing. This has been going on for a few years now. If we had been able to find a big venue before announcing the tour, then this tour wouldn't have been seen as the 'Final'. So in a sense, ending Phalaris in this way is very rooted in actuality. It probably still would have been this heavy though, even if it wasn't labeled as the final.
ーFor Uroboros, you held a finale live in Osaka jo Hall after a bit of time had passed. Is there no possibility of such a thing happening for Phalaris?
Well, I don't know. Its a timing issue. If we found the perfect venue at the perfect time, and if we were all mentally in that space....I mean, it will be easier to know as time passes, but if we are mentally for it, there may be a possibility.
ーYour answer has raised my expectations somewhat, but I'm not going to get too carried away for the time being. Have you discovered any new feelings towards this album during the current tour?
Hmm....I've been thinking its a good album (lol)
ーIts not like you to sing your own praises (lol)
Well, I mean, after this, if we realease a new single, there will probably be Phalaris-like elements to it, but even putting that to one side, so many of our past songs just fit really well alongside Phalaris. So I think we have been very true to ourselves with this album. Although it sounds a bit odd for me to say that myself (lol). I'm not entirely sure about the overall balance of the album as a piece of work, but it fits so well with our other songs, there is a mysterious feel to it.
ーFitting with your other songs may have something to do with it, but at the time you completed the album, you also said that it contains every part of Dir en grey. I'm sure you werent consciously thinking that while you were making it though.
No, I think I was at times. Of course, this isn't the end for us, but I was thinking that IF the band were to end now, I would want this to be seen as our best work. So as for consciously putting all of Dir en grey into it, no, I don't think thats wrong.
ーMaking the album with that much conscious effort means its not all new. There are links to the past, as well as that link to pull you forward onto your next step.
Yeah, and I've been feeling this even more so on the current tour. That's why I've been thinking this is a good album (lol)
ーI love hearing this kind of thing from the artists themselves. Hearing about the songs fitting well reminded me...With all these songs from Phalaris in the setlist, certain other songs might also come to mind, but to hear songs like Different Sense and Downfall in there, its like they were meant to be. That may be an odd way to describe it...
Heh, I understand. They wouldn't be out of place even if they were on Phalaris. We didn't choose to include specific types of songs while we were making it, but if you search through our past music there are some things that do just roll into place. Its probably going too far to say I was realising this when completing the album, but I feel like I can see Phalaris more clearly now. With this tour, I really do feel that sense of completion.
ーThat may be what a sense of completion actually means. You finally reach that point after realising for yourself what the flow of your past work has created.
Yes.
ーIn that sense, I think this is a very interesting outcome. But with such an intensity to the show from the outset, there is the possibilty of the audience being left behind at somepoint, if you don't get it exactly right.
Hm, I wonder. Some people might have felt that way about Phalaris 2, but this is just us being us. Its just not blowing up with excitement at the end this time, its kind of a different feeling from what we've done previously. The heaviness of the mid-section of the show is due to us being thorough, but I don't feel like its exceptional (lol)
ーAs you just said about the end of the show, closing with Kamuy is a bit different from the feeling we usually get at the end. Did you choose to play this song last, in line with bringing Phalaris to a close?
Well, it was also the first tour to play Kamuy. If we had played it at previous tours, it might have ended up in a different spot in the setlist. But for sure, to play it for the first time at the final, it could go in no other spot. Even if we were to do a seperate final in a big venue, I think it would still come at the end of the encore, not the end of the main.
ーEnding the live with the disquieting tone of Kamuy in the air, then raising the lights and bidding farewell to the audience...even with this familiar parting scene, its quite different from past tours.
With that we simply just want to say thank you to the people who came. Its a way to express thanks at the end of each show. We could just disappear off stage after Kamuy if we wanted to, but as I was saying before about 'the type of person who is stood on the stage', I want to keep this time that I have to express my thanks to the peole who come to see us. I mean, the 5 of us could all gather together in the centre for a farewell or something too, but that kind of structure somehow doesn't seem very 'us' (lol)
ー Yeah, lets save that for another occasion (lol) By the way, it must have been a difficult transition to go from finishing this phase of Phalaris, to confronting the new single 19990120.
Well, it wasnt easy. We did the 25th anniversary tour last year, so from there it was like, 'Should we do some old stuff?'. We would usually be looking at doing new material at this kinda time, but we talked about it, and what with covid and such, we thought there might be a few people out there who hadn't been to see a live show for a while. So we thought we could use some kind of tool to get more people coming back as we move forward. Not in the sense of making an album of self covers or anything, but since the 25th anniversary of our debut is in Jan 2024, we thought we might as well try something. We just wanna try out what we can, because of course there is always loads that we can't.
ーYeah. Self covers or remakes can give the impression of being backwards looking, but as we talked about how past songs have fit so well in the current tour and helped you realise how far you've come, it could be said that looking afresh at these songs from 25 years ago might be the link to future discoveries.
Whether or not this links to new things is hard to tell untill we do it, that wasn't really in my mind. But for now its more like a tool to stir up the 'Lets go and see Dir en grey again' feeling. I can say this, back in the day there were a lot of so-called heavy bands I used to go and see. I admired them and started my own band, I'm that kind of person too (lol) But I think a lot of people like that eventually start to think 'Ah, I havnt listened to that kind of music for a while', they even stop listening to music at all sometimes. Or if they do listen, its the same stuff they listened to back in the day. I wanted to strike a chord with those kind of people and get them thinking about coming to see a show. As well as letting them connect with Phalaris, its just a good starting point to get back in. So these new remakes are part of a plan, as opposed to something we just really wanted to do.
ーDir en grey have rerecored old songs in the past, but those past remakes have been more about updating old songs to match the contemporary sound of the band. Was there no such intention this time?
Its not like there was NO intention, of course, we wanted to put some of our current selves into them while making them. But we didn't want to change them outright. So in that sense, they are different from our past remakes.
ー Without trying to make any big intentional changes, you wanted the natural differences between then and now to shine through?
Yeah, that kind of thing. I think in that sense, we achieved our aim.
ー I see. I actually dug up an old interview from 25 years ago, and have been re-reading it. In it you were speaking about the background to each song and such, but Kaoru, how did you feel back then about releasing 3 songs at once for your major debut?
I though it was a great talking point, but it was hard work (lol) We had first talked about releasing two songs. So we went to LA with this idea and got to work in the studio, but then it somehow got suggested to do three songs. I honestly didn't even know how we were gonna get even two songs recorded, so I was rather skeptical that we could manage three. (lol)
ーWhat song was number 3?
That was Yurameki. We had started pre-production on all three at first, and sent them to Yoshiki. After that we chose the diametrically opposed Zan and Akuro no oka as the two songs to record. But when we went to LA, it was like, 'Ok, lets just do all three'.
ーI can hear the voice of your producer when you say that (lol). Back then, it wasn't that unusual for two songs to be released as a single at once in this category, but three had a big impact. What kind of things made a big impression on your memory back then?
Firstly, there were a lot of people around. Also, it was non-stop photoshoots and interviews. I was always writing music within this kind of bustling situation. It was really easy to lose focus of where we were heading with it all, so I tried to keep a tight hold on only that. But there were still a lot of days where I just had no idea what I was supposed to be doing.
ーYou were having like, 10 interviews at day, right? Wasn't it a bit like those artists who come to Japan for promotion, but like every day?
Yeah, even for photoshoots we would have 3 different studios booked, going here, going there, interviews in between, every time.
ーI'd like to ask about the three songs. On the new release, Yurameki is song number one. Was there any meaning behind recording them in this order?
After finishing the arangements, when we were starting the recording stage, we thought this order would be good based on how the song starts and ends. Its only for this reason.
ーI was going to ask more about the song order, but as for Yurameki, it was a bit of a curve ball for Dir en grey back in the day, wasn't it?
No, not really. We had melodious songs even then, I didn't think it was that much of a curve ball. Its Shinya's song, but he had been writIng songs during the indies era too. It was a recognition of our Shinya-esque songs.
ーAt the time, you said, 'Its a pop song, but we wanted to change up the style'. Does that mean you thought a lot about how to put it out there?
In the end, if we kept it ordinary, it would end up sounding like a totally ordinary song. I actually paid a lot of attention to parts that you wouldn't notice even if you listened to the song (lol). For example, the chord work. Yoshiki would tell me to do impossible things like, 'How about we try this?'
ーWhat do you mean by 'impossible'?
To put it simply, impossible chords and stuff. (lol) But he would say, 'Its only for the recording, so its ok, right?' So we changed our plans, and recorded all the chords one string at a time, then layered them up to make the sound. Not like playing every string simultaneously, but recording phrases one string at a time. So in the end the texture of the sound came out with more of a bang. I was spending a lot of time on those parts that no-one would probably notice.
ーIn other words, you deconstructed the song during recording.
Yes, I took advantage of the fact that they were chords that couldn't be played normally, and recorded them in a way which was unique to the studio.
ーI see. And about the songs Akuro no Oka and Zan, Yoshiki's opposite comments about both songs are in this old article. You said that for the former, he said he was concerned about the collision of sounds, and for the latter, he said 'I don't care about the collision of sounds'.
Heh, that sounds about right.
ー The collision of sounds. These are words I sometimes hear. In short, its where sounds are mixing at a place and a time where they shouldn't, right?
Yes. Maybe its because I'm a guitarist, but I tend to like adding more and more sounds and layering them up. I would suggest something like, 'I want to add this kind of phrase here', and Yoshiki would say, 'No, that gets in the way of the other sounds, change it'. So I would add something different, and he would say, 'No, thats no good either. Do you really need to add something here?'. For me it was like, 'well, I may not need to, but I want to'. It might be a guitarist thing. I say this, because Yoshiki did tell me, 'HIDE was like that, always wanting to add extra stuff in'. (lol)
ーIt must have sent shivers down your spine to hear that. In addition to this, you also said about Akuro no oka, that 'Including the guitar solo, the developments in this song are really satisfying to play'. Is it these chord progressions and such that feel pleasant to guitarists as a rule?
That is part of it. I've always felt comfortable playing this song. But when we were doing the remake, I did wonder whether I should try to go even further with it. Like, could I make it feel even more satisfying? I did actually try it, but it ended up feeling so good, it didn't line up with the original song anymore (lol). So I gave that up. It wasn't Akuro no oka anymore, it had a kind of palacial feel to it. I thought this wouldn't work (lol)
ーI feel like I also want to hear the palacial version, but we do need to preserve the foundations of the song, right? (lol) Okay, so next, the complete opposite of Akuro no oka, Zan. The song itself had been around from the beginning, and it seems like it went through many minor changes to get to where it was?
Well, because we had played it a bit live. But originally, we made it in the studio with me just telling everyone stuff like, 'Im gonna play this part like this, so you play the drums like this' etc etc. And then for the CD release, I actually remade the arrangement, so we could do it properly.
ーGenerally speaking, this is the least fitting of the three songs to be a single. Did you ever question or doubt putting this out as a single?
No, I definitely wanted to release it. So much so as to even say 'I want Zan as the first song' (lol). But it would be tough with only Zan, so thats how we came around to the idea of releasing two songs. Like, 'It has impact, but we need something with a different feel to it too'.
ーI see. It might have been a lot different if not for this decision. The three songs were recorded at the studio 'ONE ON ONE' in LA. (Note: This later became 'EXTASY STUDIO' when Yoshiki bought it, and is now in the hands of a different owner under the name '17 HERZ STUDIO'). This place was well-known for being used by Metallica, but how was it, recording overseas so suddenly?
Well, it was super luxurious. I've never had such a cushty recording experience since (lol)
ーDid you feel like, 'We made it!'?
No, I didn't. Not that long before that I had being doing home recordings, or usIng super tiny studios etc up until our indies era. So no, even being placed in that situation didn't make me feel like we'd made it. It was more like, 'Okay, what do we do now?' (lol) Being in that unfamiliar environment, there was a lot of pressure to make something lasting. We had unlimited use of equipment, but at that stage in our growth, we had limited knowledge, and undeveloped ears. So even if we heard something, we were unable to tell whether or not it really sounded good. It was me, who listened to nothing but heavy music, being told, 'Maybe this sounds better?', but then just responding, ' Nah, I just wanna make it sound more distorted'(lol) I only ever had this kind of exchange back then. But of course, my knowledge, brain, and ears were not fit for that environment. It was a bit of a waste in some sense. But it could be quite interesting if we were to do that kind of thing now. I didnt understand how the sound of a studio works back then, but if it was now, as well as having understanding, I would be able to really experiment with different things. I'd understand about mic positioning, about creating ambience, and all sorts. But back then I knew nothing. (lol)
ー Its seems almost pointless to be in that environment with such a lack of understanding and appreciation, but I think the experience itself probably meant a great deal to you, right?
Yes. I learned the importance of taking time to make something. Looking at a song from different angles, trying to dig into it in different ways. Before that things were never really much deeper than, 'Ok guys, lets make something'. I learned how to put great care into my work for the duration.
ーIts a very valuable thing to learn early on that its not all easy. Ok, so in January you will hold the FC limited live shows in Kawasaki and Osaka. You'll be in 25th debut anniversary mode in mid-Jan, right?
Well, yeah. And after that is the European tour, which will be a bit different from a regular tour. And the after that, a domestic tour entitled PSYCHONNECT. This time its 25 years since Gauze (lol).
ーIt's one anniversary after another, right?
Yeah (lol) The timing was just right to fit a tour in this Spring, and when we talked about what kind of thing to do, a Gauze themed hall tour was suggested.
ーJust to make things clear, this doesn't mean you are going to re-record the whole of Gauze, does it?
No no no (lol). If we did that people would be like, 'Enough of this already, record some new material!' (lol)
ーOf course. But at same time, I'm still kinda curious about hearing something like that.
Even if we were to do that, now isn't the time for it. People would end up thinking, 'What, are you gonna rerecord your entire catalogue??' (lol) That wouldn't be much fun.
ーYeah, interest would drop if it was nothing but rewriting history.
If I was a fan, I'd probably be thinking, 'Is this all they're doing from now on?'
ーRight. The thing we are really all waiting for is some new material after fully digesting Phalaris. Have you begun anything in that direction?
Nope, not yet (lol). I don't even know whether its ok to say this, but I haven't started yet. But actually, I was thinking about getting started today (lol).
ーYou might start writing new music straight after this interview?
Yeah, the interview just came into my schedule at exactly this time.
ーI can't wait to hear what you come up with. When I interviewed you just after the completion of Phalaris, you said that with no regular touring during covid, it had been difficult to communicate and exchange ideas with the other members. Does this mean that normality has returned to the bands' interactions. Are you able to make new music whilst interating with the other members on tour again?
Yes, we had already got back to a sense of normality by the tour before this. but now we are actually discussing next moves and stuff, and we are ready to get started. Straight after this interview, to be exact (lol).
ーLet me ask you one more thing. We touched earlier on the European tour which will be held in March. Its the first overseas tour to have past albums as a theme. What were you thinking about when deciding this?
We had originally talked about doing it in 2022 as part of the 25th anniversary run. But with the pandemic, and also trying to balance it out with the Phalaris tour, we were unable to make it happen then, so we slided it over to 2024 just as it was. People might be wondering why we are doing it at this time, but we had planned to do it from before, and now we just finally have the chance to.
ーWould you like to return to overseas touring as it used to happen previously?
Well, yeah, but its not easy. The reality is a lot different now than how it used to be. Its really not as simple as to just say, 'Let's go' now. In this case, we managed to make it work by seeing if we could do it at this particular time, but I can't be sure about future overseas tours. So to the fans in Europe, I want them to come and see us this time. Don't wait for next tme.
ーIts really interesting that the themes for this European tour are Uroboros and Withering to death. Your first ever tour of Europe was with Withering to death. These two albums have been influential in Dir en grey's overseas activities.
Yeah, we were overseas the most with those albums, and with The Marrow Of A Bone. I had thought about digging a little deeper, era-wise. Like maybe taking Vulgar overseas or something. Maybe if we have a chance in the future.
ー There are still many paths open to you. What about a Gauze world tour?
Heh, that would require a lot of motivation (lol) It would be impossible otherwise (lol)
ーWhether or not you ever manage that, there are still a lot of other things you need to do, and things you can do. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of year 2024 is for you.
Thank you. Hopefully it won't be long before we have something new to put out.

How JJK men react when the find you secretly singing
INCLUDUNG: Megumi and Yuji
There already established relationships
Tw: none, just fluff.
Also unedited so don't come for me okay
~Megumi~
It's raining slightly outside but it's not a big deal, it just means no training today. You text Megumi asking if he can come over because the bordem started to get to you. He didn't respond.
Heck maybe he was on a mission. Megumi was like that some times, a bit secretive, but he always tries to not intentionally hide things from you. But you can't exactly say you dont hide anything from him either. You maybe dating but you were still trying to hide your singing voice at all costs. You were worried he would hear it and it would be the most embarrassing moment of your life because of how soft your voice is, many times people have missed what you say in conversations because because speak softly.
But when you started talking to Megumi you realised that every time you said something he would always respond, even if you mutted slightly he would catch every word.
Giving up on staring at your phone waiting for a response from him, you got up and began to hum as you walked to the book shelf in your dorm. It was like a shared shelf that you and megumi would put your books on for eachother to read, while you were picking out a book you saw your missing head phones right next to the very last book. You grabbed them and plugged them into your phone putting on your play list while you got a book and read the blurb. You mustn't have realised but you humming turned into soft whispers to singing the song you were listening to. You got so lost in the music that you jumped violently when you felt arms wrap around your waist and take one ear phone out.
"M...Megumi?! Dont scare me like That! I was going to punch you!" You said flustered at his sudden arrival.
He put the single earphone and put it into his ear humming along to the song to. His hair was wet and dripped onto the back of your book.
"You have...a nice voice." He mumbled hesitating as he felt your body warm up.
"You should sing more often, I like your voice over the singers."
"No, don't say that" you blushed putting your hands over your face to spread your blush.
"But it's true"
He humms again in you ear before he speaks again and finds your hands to pull away from your face.
"Say it; in other words hold my hand" He sang waiting for you to finish the lyric.
"In other words darling kiss me-" you sang making him smile as he takes the book out of your hands and down on your desk. Maybe you will sing around him more often.
▪︎Yuji▪︎
You guys we're going to go with Megumi and Nobora for Yujis birthday. It had to be good, that's why Nobora suggested going to a karaoke place, belive it or not Yuji was actually really good at singing and he enjoyed it to. He would always sing little songs when he was busy doing something like baking or just walking around jujitsu high. People would catch him in the middle of his song before they got his attention causing him to do his signature bright smile.
You on the other hand were not keen to sing in public at all. Not to be confised with the favt rhat you a a beautiful angelic voice, it was just the idea of singing where other people could hear that was terrifying, what of you had a voice crack? Or you sang the wrong words? You would never recover. But you were only ever caught singing twice, once by Toge, who swore he wouldn't tell anyone after your continuous begging, and the second time by Gojo, which you had to bribe him with cake. After those two incidents you were more cautious about where and when you sang. But at a karaoke party? It's hard to not avoid singing. Megumi said he won't sing but you know by the end of the night he would. So I must be inescapable for you to.
"LETS GO!" Nobora shouted down the hallway. That's right you two were going to pick up Yujis cake and met Megumi and Yuji there.
Oy after 15 minutes of panicking you and Nobora had the cake secured.
You thought of so many ways to get out of singing until you settled on the perfect excuse.
You went inside the place and saw megumi and Yuji standing at the enterance waiting for you.
"Happy birthday Yuji" you said giving him a soft smile that made him blush ightly as every one started to walk inside.
You all sat down in the room before Nobora picked up two microphones and handed one to Yuji before offering it to you.
"Ah sorry I can't sing" you told her but she persisted.
"Actually my throat is really sore right now"
Yuji looked at you before getting an idea of what your trying to do before he interjected by putting in a song and hitting play. He stood up and cheerful yelled into the microphone beofre saying
"THIS ONES FOR YOU Y/N"
he started singing...horribly. you knew he could sing better, so did everyone else. But he sounded terrible so you wouldn't be afraid. You really didn't want to sing but because of Yuji you were going to sing now. So you stood up to and sang along...not as bad...with him.
"No, noooo, you are always gonna be my loveeeee"
He looked over at you in admiration, you turned your head to him, face slightly red of embarrassment.
The song finished and Yuji blew out the candles on his cake.
"What did you wish for?" Nobora asked
"Well I wished that Y/N would sing more around me." He said hand rubbing that back of his neck nervously.
Let's just say you sang your heart out for him that night.
Authors note: I quoted "fly me to the moon" for Megumi and "first love" by Hikaru Utada for Yuji

The Flags HC's
(that nobody asked for... but i love them and I have no where to put these) note: these are just general hc's :P if you want me to make other ones lmk!
Pianoman: - his ass cannot play piano, when people asks if he can because of his name, he changes the subject because he feels embarrassed - is the oldest sibling in his family - since he's a perfectionist, he's also kind of his own worst critic (can be in a really shitty mood if he's alone with his thoughts for too long) - his hair is a result of vitiligo - is an anxious person, but somehow his anxiety goes away when he's with The Flags - whenever he handles something physically using his hands, he's very cautious and tends to treat whatever is in his hands gingerly (like if he's given a gift, he will gently hold it in his hands instead of just taking it like normal) - has naturally shaky hands (i want to give him a big hug and kiss :( ) - going along with his hands, they're very thin, so his gloves are thick enough to where you don't really know what they look like underneath - has a really shitty sense of humor and will laugh at that one meme video with the bread falling on it's side - has defined canines and it shows if he opens his mouth or smiles
Lippman: - gets to know all of the celebrity drama before it gets out in the media: sometimes he uses it for blackmail or just tells the others and they all become a little gossip group (it's mostly just him, iceman, and chuuya though...) - he can make really good tea, like knows every little detail that comes with making tea: not leaving out a single step so you can get the best flavor out of the tea - polyglot, he once had to learn english for a role that he had and then proceeded to teach himself any language he thought was cool (sometimes mumbles in a different language under his breathe to mess with chuuya) - flirts with Pianoman a lot, says it's for fun, but he might have a little crush - wears that really dramatic silk robe with feathers and drags on the floor, it's either white or baby blue - paints his nails and will paints Chuuya's nails sometimes to practice, Chuuya says he's only doing it because he's his superior, but secretly enjoys it - unintentionally fixes The Flags outfits or hair, mostly Chuuya: like he'll adjust Iceman's collar if it's standing up, or he'll comb Chuuya's hair back into a nicer ponytail if it gets messy throughout the day
Iceman: - has a niece, and is the BEST uncle to her, likes to spoil her and will literally do anything for her (i read this from a fic and i can't stop thinking about it) - loves hearing gossip despite not talking that much - insomniac, spends most of his nights listening to his records with whiskey unless he has a job to do - plays his records really loud, but his listening room is sound proof so he can hear every little detail in the music - likes records, but he actually prefers live bands instead, thinks records are classy - gifts Chuuya records if he notices that Chuuya is singing a song to himself, usually tries to find the song and gets Chuuya that record of the album - is slowly becoming deaf, the only person that knows is Pianoman and Lippman, and he's slowly teaching The Flags sign language when they're on missions with him (he'll say it's because he wants to be quiet) (he won't admit it, but he will miss not being able to hear the others banter in the background anymore) - doesn't actually care about his ego/reputation at all, he's pretty confident in his assassinations, but if he fails a job, he'll just sigh and smoke a cigarette and move on - does not style his hair, he wakes up in the morning and moves it around a little bit and that's his hair for the day - he can't see out of his right eye that has the scar, but when he feels invoked with an emotion, he'll open that eye - notices small details... like extremely small details: one's that you won't even be thinking about; probably remembers what people like when they mention they like it once, knows when someone gets a haircut or they change colognes
Doc: - silly guy (canon) - he judges people's fashion taste despite not wearing any sort of outfit himself: likes to give pointers to Lippman about how to style his shirt or will judge Chuuya's strange outfits; will put on a good outfit if he's feeling like it - is very good at video games, but he doesn't really play them in his free time, but once Chuuya offered to play a video game with him and Doc beat his ass (Chuuya is still salty over an old Mario Cart match) - avoids walking long distance otherwise he'll start to feel tired, Albatross offers to take Doc everywhere - really good at darts... like his accuracy is scarily amazing, but guess you can't expect less from a doctor with his credentials - his way of showing affection is by being... very uncomfortably close to someone and then waiting to see if they're going to react, if they acknowledge his presence he smiles and then just walks away - very fidgety when he's doing something that isn't his job, will often fidget with something in his hand like a paper clip or rubber band, but suddenly that all goes away when it involves work - youngest sibling in his family... idk he gives me that energy
Albatross: - uses text emojis like ":D" and ":O" and so on; it does not matter who he is texting and he can and will accidentally text that to Mori on the phone (then proceeds to get lectured heavily by Pianoman) - answers his phone/messages immediately the moment that he gets them - can and will talk his ass off for hours on end, sometimes he does it to annoying Chuuya, but sometimes Chuuya actually wants to listen to it all - metalhead, this is canon actually i'm asagiri - gives the best hugs, like he gives big bear hugs; greets all of the Flags with hugs despite they're reactions - human heater, is always warm and it doesn't matter what season it is... he's just strangely warm all of the time (sometimes Doc sits next to him during the winter or if he's cold because he gets cold easily, and is a lot thinner than the rest of them) - openly bi, like he talks about it all of the time if he finds a man attractive
" I mean I know this man is our next target, but his ass looks nice in this file photo- " " Albatross." " Sorry.
-has freckles on his cheeks - has heterochromia, his eyes are blue and red
Chuuya: - has freckles... like everywhere, used to cover them up with makeup when he was younger and around The Flags, but then forgot one time and then Lippman said that it fit him and he stopped covering them up - can pick up any instrument he finds and owns a couple of guitars - huge audiophile and will judge every pair of headphones or recorde/cd/speakers that he's given; the record player in his house is very extra and over 2000 dollars - sings to himself when he's doing chores, or if he's playing music in the background, he will dance and sing while sweeping the floor - despite being musical, his dancing tends to be very clumsy (was once caught by Albatross and he made fun of him for a whole week) - can speak French and will cuss in French without thinking when he gets annoyed - knows all of the Mafia gossip, but no one knows he's a gossip-y kind of person... he knows everything about everyone, often finds himself hearing two different sides of one story - shopaholic (he cannot close his closet door anymore because the door is broken because it's so crowded in there)

TFP Optimus, Ratchet, Bumblebee and Arcee with a human s/o that likes to sing
Hi everyone! I know that I said I would post Part 2 of Wildest Dreams this week, but I'm not sure when I would finish it since I have a TON of work to finish, so I'll see do I get around to finish it at all.
There are a couple of songs that I will mention and the links' below! There are some in Chinese and Korean, so if you want the translation you can search it up or ask me for them :)
Enjoy!
Notes: Fluff, fluff, gender neutral reader
TEAM PRIME
Optimus Prime
Optimus has a pretty nice voice so I would say he used to sing before the war.
He was relatively shocked to find out that you sang too.
He found out one day when you and the humans were having fun and goofing around. Miko was trying to sing a song in Mandarin and the kids were covering their ears due to the limited Mandarin words she could speak.
You took that as a chance and took over for her, not missing a single word and reaching every high note.
That left them speechless and left you with a very red face.
After that, he would silently with you would sing all the time.
You can't blame him, honestly, since he has a love for music too.
I think the music on Cybertron is quite different from Earth, so he would love to listen to you sing.
He doesn't care if you sing well or not, he just loves your voice.
His favorite song would probably be 'Something just like this' because it somewhat reminds him of the life he had when he was a clerk in the Iacon Hall of Records.
He would probably ask you to sing for him when he's feeling down.
He would also sing for you when you don't feel well or is feeling sad, and honestly that man has the voice of a god.
You are the only one he sings to, so don't abuse that privilege.
"I've been reading tales of old, the legends and the myths..."
Ratchet
This man... He is the complete opposite of Optimus Prime.
He would pretend he hates your singing because it 'disturbs him' but he actually looks forward to listening to your voice.
He discovered that you loved to sing when he heard you singing when working one day.
He grumbled and asked if you could stop because it was disrupting his work and when you didn't stop, he went over to see what was going on.
It turns out you had headphones in and couldn't hear him, still singing to whatever song you were singing to.
He secretly enjoyed your singing and was somewhat disappointed when you stopped.
But of course he said 'Thank Primus' or something along those lines.
He would pretend to hate your voice so much that you actually believed it and stopped singing.
Once he saw you crying in one of the vents (how did you get there?) and was surprised when you said you were crying because of how unconfident you felt whenever you sang.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that he was the reason you felt unconfident.
He immediately apologized and reassured you that you have a beautiful singing voice.
Honestly... That's just the way he is. A pretty nice guy pretending to be a jerk for some reason.
He hates to admit that he wants to hear you sing, but you usually know what he wants and sings for him.
His favorite song would be '白月光与朱砂痣', because it's the song you sang when he first discovered your beautiful voice. Even though he doesn't completely understand the lyrics, it sounds peaceful and soothing.
"白月光在照耀 你才想起她的好..."
Bumblebee
This boy is the most supporting boyfriend anyone could ever have. You are lucky to have him. Do not break his heart or you would be seeing me tonight.
He's young. Like really young. He was born into the war so he has little time where he could actually let loose and be a child, despite him always acting like one.
He has this certain pressure on him to be mature and a warrior, so he has never had a peaceful life.
He loves music on Earth, especially hype music. He would be the type that hates classical music since it's too boring.
A Kpop fan. A huge one. He would be listening to Kpop 24/7, and I'd say that his favorite band is Stray Kids (because who doesn't love them)
He would be the type that doesn't go out of his way to learn a song or a certain dance but just jumps to the rhythm and hums to the music.
He discovered your singing voice when you were singing to a tune under your breath when you heard the song coming from his speakers.
Needless to say he asked you to sing it again and again.
He would watch all the MVs and try to dance along (and breaking stuff in the process)
His favorite song would be 'Zoo', indefinitely. He loves the beat and the rhythm, and it makes him feel alive. It makes him want to jump up and dance, so it would be a bad choice for music when he's driving.
"Head to toe, cool like a lion, CEO, boss like a bison..."
Arcee
I feel like she wouldn't like songs that are too noisy because they actually disturb her (unlike a certain person mentioned above) but she wouldn't like songs that are way too quiet.
She would listen to classical music when trying to focus or work, but overall she would like to listen to songs that aren't too boring but aren't too hype.
I think she would be a great singer but decides not to because she needs to focus on whatever she's doing, same when she was back on Cybertron.
If she's a good singer, then she would be an even better dancer.
She's really agile and quick on her feet (unlike me lmao) and she could hear the beat in music 10 times faster than anyone else and can come up with dances for every song.
She used to be a dance teacher as a part-time back at Cybertron and was good at it. Why do you think she can do cartwheels, backflips and splits without a second thought? She was either a gymnast or dancer and I'm saying dancer.
She would somewhat be like Ratchet, not going to admit she loves your voice but not going to say she hates it too.
She discovered your love for singing when Miko was learning a new song to dance and sing to when you popped in.
Since she was Japanese, it was a bit hard for her to learn something in Korean, despite them being similar (I'm saying this because I have that difficulty too, but for those that don't have this problem correct me pls).
You popped in and taught her how to pronounce the words correctly and proceeding to sing the song yourself.
She was pleasantly surprised, to say the least.
I think her favorite song would be Chandelier by Sia, because it sounds really nice and she just loves the song for some reason.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I might make a second part with the rest of Team Prime or the Decepticons, but we'll see. I was going to make a full Team Prime for this one, but I didn't have enough time.
Songs are below:
Something Just Like This (Optimus):
youtube
白月光与朱砂痣 (Ratchet):
youtube
Zoo (Bumblebee):
youtube
Chandelier (Arcee):
youtube
This wasn't good, I know but it was an idea I had and I wanted to finish it before I lost motivation :(
See you next week!
rock-star! hobie x super-star! reader headcannons
ooc!hobie (maybe). gn!reader. mentions of girlfriend one time but that it. black coded!reader but its not heavy or anything. reader was supposed to be a rapper but i like the idea of a super star instead. i wanted to make the reader like sexyy red that didn't happen. theres a suggestive part. idk how to write his accent
color coded text: hobie , you
you guys are more alike than you think. touring, getting into fights, sometimes your music topics intersect beating people down, stealing peoples partners, rebelling against the system in some way, shape or form.
but where you're different is how you market yourselfs. hobies band is more about being loud about the hate for conforming and the system. they're vocal about political issues, they almost get banned from tv multiple times for broadcasting ideas that the man doesn't like.
you on the other hand, are seen as the super star of your generation. you rap, sing dance—you're the real deal. your music is very diverse depending on what you want to go for; you could sing the most heart wrenching songs about one sided love and the next track you could be rapping about getting white girl wasted and getting ████ed in the ████ in the car before an award show (which may or may not have happened).
anyways! you two keep your relationship as private as you can. you don't really talk about each other in interviews, you have a couple songs about each other but it's not really a common thing.
theres a lot of paparazzi pics of you two together though. theres pics of you and hobie walking out of after parties together, hanging with his friends, coming back from the grocery store and many, many photos of you two hugging and kissing.
hobie has like this sixth sense that makes him always find the camera so sometimes theres pictures of him grabbing as much of your ass as he can while smirking at the camera man thats walking behind you (which you didn't know whats there btw)
and every single times he dose that theres always a second picture of you hitting the back of his head or grabbing his ear.
*click* *click* *click* "stop doing that!" your face was getting hotter from embarrassment as you turned the corner faster trying to get away from the camera man. hobie could only smirk as he caught up to you easily, putting his hand on your shoulders before pulling you closer.
bringing one of his hands to your waist as the other snaked from your shoulder to your chest. "c'mon luv, you know i can't resist..." his breath hitting your ear as he leaned in to smell your neck before being cut off by a hit to his chest. you could practically hear his smirk as he pushed your hips back into his.
your stomach started to naught as you felt it on your behind. you closed your eyes almost forgetting the situation. *click* *clock* *click* your eyes snapped open as your hear the camera man behind you.
"oh hush you just think you're funny." hobie couldn't even hold back his laugh as he watched you walk in front of him with your arms crossed. "well it is! n' don't act like you don't like it."
if you're shy & bashful he would love to embarrass you but not in a ddg/halle bailey way but in a "omgggg stop guys🙈" kind of way like why is he parading around in a 'i 🩷 my gf' shirt and making out with you on national television
hobie dose not think it's right to be controlling over his partners nor dose he believe that you should be subservient to him—now with that being said he feels sick to his stomach when you collaborate with certain artists.
you had a song about partying in the club and your male feature was talking about fucking on you he couldn't even bring himself to post the song on a ig story. he actually fell to his knees !!!
speaking of feeling sick! if you ever twerk on someone just for a performance or have to grind on someone during a dance he doesn't get super angry or whatever but in the inside he's like 'im abt to kms'. he's very dramatic!!
he hates when people try to put you in the role of just being his partner and nothing else—he will literally sit there and argue with someone if they ever try to sit there and say you're nothing but a pretty face.
he feels a certain way if you ever get uber rich. he knows thats most if not all artist want to live comfortably and he understands that you aren't the corrupt system that exploits others, hell you're getting exploited in some way.
BUT if you ever have a million dollars his would would feel a little VERY unsettled. he'd probably break up with you lol he wouldn't want to sound like a hater but he'd try to be like "heyyy how about we donate some money to a shelter or something🙈🫶🏿💗❓"
but if you're dating him he won't have to worry about that because you have to be at least a little political (and he'd have to agree with your views)
you might not be an anarchist, you don't even have to classify yourself with one political party but you have to at least be anti-capitalist, anti-establishment and pro-black.
speaking of politics he gets arrested all the time for protesting and you'll have to get used to that. like every few weeks you will have to pic him up from jail because he was arrested for conspiracy to riot or something on the lines of that.
IF you two ever collab you'll have to find a middle ground because he cannot sing (that is cannon!) and you should never try to get him too unless you want your engineer to be slaving away trying to get him to sound listenable.
he's lowkey your arm candy and he doesn't mind it at all. like if you get invited to the grammies or something he'll always come with you (his group will most likely never get nominated bc of the topics they like to talk about.) but he's never wearing a suit he just likes to dress like this:
in return you'll probably have to dress in a lot of black id you want to match or don't... he'll be like your statement piece for the night
if he's with you when you get your first award he'll literally pic you up and jump up and down with you for a few seconds before letting you go
if you normally win at award shows he just kisses you for a few seconds before letting go up to accept it
either way doesn't like to go up on stage with you hen you accept awards because he feels like he takes away from your moment but he dose walk you off and on stage. the only way he'll ho up on stage with you is if you're like crying really heavy then.
his band mates probably thought you were gonna be the hit it & quit it type because usually punks and non-punks don't last long but they were a little surprised when 1) you two lasted long and 2) you agreed with their views despite being industry.
sum sum sum idk how to end this
VELVET, VENEER, RITZ AND ORCHID HCS ‼️
---
Okay so i said it was going to just be velvet and veneer, but honestly i thought of some ritz and orchid ones so why not⁉️
---
VELVET:
I love to think velvet gets super embarrassed when she's wrong about something, so embarrassed she would get defensive or act like she didn't hear correctly, and will say things like "wait what!? Sorry I didn't hear you!" Or "so I'm wrong but who cares!!? At least I'm pretty!!"
VELVET IS SUUUPER COMPETITIVE, like just imagine someone else in mount rageous starting climbing the ranks just as fast as her and veneer, velvet might get so fame crazy she'd take every single troll she can lure in, just to use their talent.
Velvet definitely loves Ariana Grande and lady gaga, I mean from the ponytail to the way she sings, you cannot tell me otherwise
---
VENEER:
Veneer can sing. I know a lot of people already think this but i truly think that veneer knows how to sing, and just acts like he can't in front of velvet because he didn't want her to get jealous or even angry.
Veneer loves my little pony. Don't tell me that this goofball wouldn't sit on the couch at 3AM, eat ice cream, and watch my little pony😭
Veneer 1000000% loves Melanie Martinez and mitski, if he's really like me, he'll listen to the songs for hours, never getting bored and always singing along.
---
RITZ:
Ritz's natural hair is blonde, but he dyed the ends blue, yes, I know it might be a little weird but i feel like his hair is just faded out from where he dyed it before.
I love to think that Ritz is either trying to make music or already does, specifically rap music, just the way he acts it makes it seem like a big possibility.
I feel like Ritz would secretly watch things like hazbin hotel and helluva boss and actually love it, thinking he wouldn't but then buying a bunch of merch😭
---
ORCHID:
Orchids pronouns are she/they, I've thought about this and for some reason it fits so well?
This ties in with Ritz one, but I feel like orchid would HATE her blonde hair so she'd dye it purple because it's her favorite color, plus it's the color of velvets boots and stuff.
ALSO would think that orchid would be a very artistic person, more so on the drawing side, and I'd think she'd use her artistic skills as an excuse to draw velvet.
---
EXTRA:
I've thought about this one a lot, but I feel like ritz and orchid would to totally be siblings, they have similar eye colors first off, and i find it would be so adorable for them to talk about their MASSIVE crushes on velvet and veneer🙏😭
---
This surprisingly didn't take too long so if anyone wants more just ask‼️‼️
Geoff Castellucci 2024 Recap
Hello fam and welcome to my 2024 recap post for what Geoff has been up to on his solo channel this year! (This will be followed up with a VoicePlay 2024 recap in a day or two, don't you worry). This year was my first full year of being "fully down the rabbithole", and I started this sideblog back in late January, so basically this is just a "quick" (hah!) summary of stuff that I've more or less already covered on this blog, because it's just a bit of fun!
Right, before we get to the full-length stuff, I gotta of course give a shout-out to the shorts! Geoff uploaded seven shorts this year: Texas Hold 'Em, Trust In Me, I'm On Fire, The Rainbow Connection, Rawhide, Friends On The Other Side, and Loch Ness Monster. I would love to be able to pick a favourite or two, but I can't! Trust In Me and Rainbow Connection have both gone onto my "Last Resort Sleep Playlist" (a collection of Geoff narrations and music tracks), Texas Hold Em is a vibe, Rawhide is a catchy banger, Loch Ness Monster is fun, Friends On The Other Side is *brilliant*, and I'm On Fire is nice too!
But now that's out of the way, onto the main part of the post, where I get to revisit every single song from this year! :D
Wicked Game - released February 9th
On my personal Discord server, early in February, I was like "y'know it's entirely possible that Geoff's first song of 2024 could kinda sorta be a song for Valentine's Day?" and well, it kinda went in the exact opposite direction! But hey I'm calling that a Nat 10 for the album art alone. Geoff continued the trend of having his first release of the year be one involving a piano, and this kinda had bits and pieces of his previous piano covers to it as well! The initial "grizzly bear singing a lullaby" (not my phrasing) vocal tone/timbre, like in Till Then, the utterly haunting soundscape kinda similar to Sound Of Silence, and the visual vibe of High And Dry (I actually did a mini two-picture comparison between High And Dry and Wicked Game which you can go find HERE). But also like High And Dry was the way Geoff went higher with every chorus bit, but then brought it all back down at the end! And you can go find my initial thoughts post I made about it HERE
Favourite music moment: When he goes highest on the final chorus and does that vocal run thing on "No IIIIIIIII..."
Favourite visual moment: The brief cut to black followed immediately by a front close shot of Geoff. Either that or just the way the video holds on Geoff sitting at the piano in silence for a few moments right at the end - very impactful!
Unshaken - released March 9th
And Now For Something Completely Different To What Came Before! Y'know when the video premiere showed up on YouTube and I saw in the video description that Geoff said about "the perfect opportunity to bring the riders back", I was like "Lol could you imagine if this video was kinda sorta a "prequel" to Ghost Riders In The Sky? Like with Jeff, Goff, Jeoph, and Daryl being regular human cowboys before they became ghost riders/ghost cowboys? Haha just kidding unless?" AND THEN GUESS WHAT! (Still sad that I didn't find any reactors who made that connection in their videos tbh). I also made a photo compilation thing comparing each of the "Riders" in this to how they look as "Ghost Riders" in Ghost Riders In The Sky! (link to post)
This quickly became my favourite Geoff release of 2024 for a while, and at the very least I'd still say it's my favourite video of his of the year (and only one of two 2024 videos that I did Voiceplay-adjacent Visuals for, which you can find HERE). Also Jeoph has no business looking that good in that handlebar moustache, like it gives me a crisis! That's not the kind of look that I'm usually attracted to! The moustache isn't even real! Why do you look so good like that?!!?
Favourite music moment: the eardrum-shaking D1 sub and the awesome G4 chest/mixed note, alongside the absolutely insane amount of G1s!!
Favourite visual moment: Of course I love that final silhouette shot of Goff, Daryl, Jeoph, and Jeff, but I also gotta give a shoutout to something that's not part of this video: there's no gramophone logo at the end! Which I choose to believe was a subtle nod to the fact that "regular Geoff" isn't in this one! It's just the clones!
You Don't Mess Around With Jim - released May 10th
This is actually the only full-length video of 2024 to feature Geoff being fully sleeveless! (This includes VoicePlay videos, but not counting the Minis and stuff). Quite a difference to the amount of sleeveless-ness(?) we got last year, but honestly, when you have five Geoffs in black tank tops staring down the camera and looking like that, well I think we absolutely still certainly got our fill! (One of the commenters said that this video was "like if the guys from Sixteen Tons grew up and got scarier" and they're kinda not wrong!)
Apparently there are a few people who think that certain reactors are "too over the top" or "must be faking it" but they clearly haven't met me because like I didn't even get to the first line of this song before I had to pause and rewind! The immediate start with the stomps and the claps and the humming had me being like "waitwaitwait I wasn't ready hang on a minute!" and genuinely the moment of "you don't - into the wind" with what sounded like glass shattering almost gave me half a heart attack the first time! Definitely a catchy tune, though!
Favourite music moment: I quite enjoyed the part sung by "Slim" (always nice to hear Geoff singing in a bit of upper register!) but also I of course have to also give love to the bit of scatting at the end! Is there anything he can't do?
Favourite visual moment: When Geoff hits that E1 subharmonic at the end and the other "Geoffs" either side of him start stomping and clapping again while "Lead Geoff" stands relatively motionless. It just works!
Big Iron - released July 12th
This one is definitely a bit special to me. Not only is it Geoff's 30th full-length song cover on his channel, but also it's the first full cover I got early access to since joining Geoff's Patreon, and to top it all off, it's another with original lyrics in it! I was looking up the lyrics after I had watched Geoff's cover, and I was like "wait, this doesn't have a chorus? But Geoff's definitely had a chorus, right?" and then I rewatched Geoff's video on my laptop while having the original lyrics up on my phone and was like "yeah hang on a minute!" (He didn't even confirm it for us Patrons! Just left it for us to figure out before the public premiere!)
Usually I'm partial to interesting visual/video stuff, but the song arrangement of this alone was so dang good that I was like "dang does this overtake Unshaken as my favourite Geoff release of the year?" Ultimately I determined that Unshaken was my favourite video, and Big Iron was my favourite song. (Also I found it amusing/interesting how the narrative of this song actually had a fair bit of similarities to Geoff's previous cover of YDMAWJ, and so I made a comparison post thing, which you can find HERE)
Favourite music moment: I love the way he turned one of the verses into a sort of bridge section (the "wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red..." bit up to the "twenty-one would be the ranger with a big iron on his hip" line), but I really love the line "riding hell for leather, midnight to the dawn...", both because it's a very cool Geoff Original lyric, and also because of the harmonised vocal run thing on the word 'dawn'!
Favourite visual moment: Not a lot of "action" to pick out of this one, but I will give kudos to the attention to detail of Lead Geoff having just his watch on his left wrist and then a thin leather bracelet thing on the right wrist, while the Clones are wearing both of those things on their left wrists, while having additional different leather bracelet things on their right wrists! Just a nice little touch of differentiation!
Imagine - released August 9th
Y'know in late July I literally made a post being like "man I love it when Geoff plays the piano!" and I half-joked about making a photo compilation of all the times he's played piano in videos (and a couple of y'all were like "yes do it") and then like only a few days later he posted a teaser image for his next video, featuring him playing piano!!!
I know there are people with Strong Feelings about this song (as Geoff said in his video description), whether positive or negative, but personally I'm more or less neutral on the original, so I was certainly going in open-minded to this, and man Geoff never disappoints! This definitely left me with a massive smile on my face, and if you wanna see the initial thoughts I had about the song/video, you can find them HERE!
Favourite music moment: the sudden switch to layered vocals and a "higher energy" performance was amazing, and there was some fantastic belting in this, too!
Favourite visual moment: when Geoff sings "imagine all the people, sharing all the world, you...", I love the hand/arm lifting motion he does on the word "you", like he's really getting into it and connecting with the performance! Oh and also on the final "and the world will be as one" at the end of the video, right at the start of that line there's a brief moment where he actually looks directly at the camera (or at least seems to), and honestly I feel like it adds just that little extra bit of impact.
Song Of Durin - released September 22nd
Talk about a song that I really didn't expect to love so dang much!
Like okay, of course I knew I would enjoy the song/video - it's Geoff, after all, but like I'm not a Tolkien fan! (Not that I dislike the Middle Earth stuff, I just haven't read any of the books or seen any of the films). And this one doesn't necessarily have any one particular "thing" that I can point to and be like "yes that's the reason I love this", it's just really good as whole, and somehow it managed to sink its claws into me and kept pulling me back to it again and agin!
When I did my initial thoughts/commentary post for this (LINK), I was like "I'm not sure if this beats I See Fire for me or whether it's just equal", but I did finally decide that this one does, in fact, beat I See Fire for me! (Though all the "dwarf songs" are great in their own ways of course.) But whether it beats Big Iron? Honestly I haven't even bothered comparing them. But this has become a comfort/relaxation song for me and I love it. (And apparently so do a lot of other folk, as it became Geoff's first cover of 2024 to hit a million views! Let's go!)
(Also here's a link to a comparison post for Fili, Kili, Bofur, and Thorin across the 3 Geoff videos they've been in, and here's another link to the Voiceplay-Adjacent Visuals I did for this video!)
Favourite music moment: When Bofur sings "but still the sunken stars appear, in dark and windless Mirrormere" in that high voice like dang that's so pretty! (But also I kinda just wanna say "all of it")
Favourite visual moment: The decision to have Fili, Thorin, Kili, and Bofur be ghosts/spectres/spirits was quite clever from a narrative perspective, as they lived many many years before Gimli (lead singer here), with The Hobbit being a prequel to The Lord Of The Rings and all. And Eli always does a fantastic job with lighting design, whether for VoicePlay or whether he's helping Geoff, but man I definitely loved all the lighting choices here!
Carol Of The Bells - released December 6th
I had a few ideas/hopes/predictions about what Geoff might do for his Christmas video this year, but I never would have even considered putting this song on my predictions list! Just like often with Geoff (and VoicePlay), it's a cover I didn't know I needed in my life until I got it! Goddang!
This is basically the spiritual successor to Geoff's cover of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and I LOVE IT! If you missed my recent thoughts/commentary about the cover, you can find that HERE, but basically from that first piano note I was intrigued, and then from that "merry ChristMAAAAAA..." my jaw dropped and basically stayed dropped the whole way through.
Favourite music moment: I mean like that 14-second subharmonic thing with the distortion and the backing vocals like hello? And apparently it's not even a single held note, but a movement going G1-Eb1-F1-D1? Dang! And then very quickly afterwards we get the most gorgeous "throw cares awayyyy" tenor line, like come on my dude!
Favourite visual moment: Can't go wrong with a bit of a camera shake effect for ground-quaking low notes! But also I love how that final bell sound right at the end is perfectly timed to the appearance of the gramophone logo! Chefs kiss!
And that's my summary done for Geoff's channel! My VoicePlay 2024 recap will be coming the day after tomorrow, and it's going to be an even longer post than this! (Y'know, since they ended up with 11 full-length releases this year compared to Geoff's 7). See y'all soon!
Cedric's two brazillian voice actors in STF:
The character Cedric The Sorcerer, from Sofia The First, had two voice actors: Hermes Baroli and Marco Aurélio Campos.
The reasons for the change in voice actor are unknown to the public, Hermes Baroli voiced Cedric from Once Upon a Princess to the sixth episode of season two, and from then on, Cedric was voiced by Marco Aurélio Campos. The first voice is my favorite because it resembles the original voice, Jess Harnell. The second voice actor's voice, although similar to the previous voice actor and makes up as a good substitute, is too high-pitched for Cedric's character. Disney Jr. Brazil only posts clips of the cartoon with Cedric's second voice, and it is not possible to find official Disney clips of the first voice on YouTube (even though the part of the cartoon in which it had the most audience and was most famous was during the first season, at least here in Brazil). I found some clips from the first voice actor on Facebook and scenes posted on YouTube by fans of the show, because Disney Jr Brazil does not posts them. I find it weird that there are no S1 Cedric moments posted on Disney Jr brazillian accounts, even though season 1 was the best season for STF in matters of fame, audience and merchandize.
Hermes Baroli (Debut movie - S2 E6):
He sounds like Jess Harnell speaking in portuguese in some moments. His performance is incredible in every episode he's in (Cedric's Apprentice, The Floating Palace, A Royal Mess, The Amulet Of Avalor, The Enchanted Feast...). He's expressive, has a deep voice (at a good amount, not too much) and changes tones during speeches to convey the character's feelings a bit more. At the moments where Jess Harnell makes his voice deeper to show irritation or evil schemings, Hermes Baroli also nails this. Btw I grew up with this voice so maybe I'm just biased.
I was previously going to edit a single video and add it to the post, but both of my two tries made the posts be deleted, probably due to the size of the video. So you'll have to watch these clips directly from YouTube and Facebook (hope you have an account there).
Cedric's Apprentice (magic show scene and best quality video):
The Royal Sleepover (Cedric's scene starts at 03:15):
youtube
You can easily find more clips of the brazillian S1 dub (and the rest of the cartoon too) on Tiktok or on Disney Plus.
Marco Aurélio Campos (S2 E7 - end):
Although his voice is a good substitute for the first one because it is somewhat similar, it's too high-pitched and humorous to be Cedric's, every time he talks he has an air of awkwardness, even in sad scenes (he can't be taken seriously, his voice is too outgoing...). It's not that it's bad, but the previous one would sound much better and more faithful to the original VA.
youtube
I don't know why Cedric's voice was changed. James' voice was also changed around the last season to a much more deeper voice.
(Not so) fun fact: Unfortunately, the dubbing director failed with the translation of the songs and the overall composition of them after they were dubbed. The translation is bad, and the voice actors seem like they can't sing. However, in Once Upon A Princess and Forever Royal, the songs were absolutely perfect, well translated, the melodies were good, and the voice actors, who we previously thought couldn't sing, sang very well (Even Cedric's second VA, he sang pretty well in "A Big Day/For One And All"). I don't know what happened, but I wish the songs from the actual show (My Evil Dreams, Cedric The Great, other songs) were treated just as well. (Both of them were awwwwfully bad)
Thank Starkid for uploading VHSCC to Youtube, albeit temporarily, because their site doesn't work for me so I couldn't buy it or any other digital ticket (including Cinderella's Castle for which I was a kickstarter 🥲) and I'm so glad I can still watch it now!!
Anyway here are my thoughts/liveblogging post from watching! I didn't think to do this until I reached the second part and realized I had a lot to say so everything about the new material is retroactively written
I. Hate to say it, but I can't remember a single new song. One reason I love VHSCC so much is because it only took me one watch to remember the songs, they're incredibly catchy and iconic... And the new ones did nothing to me.
In general I didn't really vibe with the new material? I think it's important to note that I don't celebrate Christmas, like, it's not even the main wintertime holiday of where I live so inherently theres a level of disconnect for me with that angle, but I still find some Christmas stories charming- case in point, I genuinely love A Christmas Carol! I know these two stories outside of the lens of Christmas- I'm fairly certain I heard a different holiday version of Gift of the Magi as a kid, and I had the book of The Little Matchgirl as a kid and didn't uh. Really touch it after reading it once because I found it senselessly sad. So like? I'm familiar with these stories, but this version of them really didn't hit me in the way I think they're meant to or in the way the original versions do. I didn't really find Gift of the Magi touching or funny, which I feel like is what they should've gone for at the end, and I felt... Nothing with Little Matchgirl, which surprised me because I was fully prepared to cry.
Actually it. Felt really preachy while also somehow being just completely empty of meaning to me? Little Matchgirl in particular. Idk. The tragedy of it just... Completely failed to land for me when Clark immediately starts singing about uh. Activism essentially? It's like, bro, you didn't even give me enough time to process it or to get sad before you just started preaching at me??? Idk, I just. Really didn't like it. Clark's parts in general were the worst parts of the new material in my opinion, which surprised me, because I did like them in Christmas Carol! Idk, it might be a matter of the stories being too short, so it feels intrusive for the detached narrator to cut in to fill in blanks that weren't there or to hammer down the message, instead of letting the characters and story do it themselves.
I genuinely don't enjoy shitting so hard on the new stuff, but. I didn't really like them and kinda just wanted them to be over so I could watch a show I knew I DID like. I don't think it was all bad, I mean, the acting was fun and everyone's obviously mad talented, but in terms of musicality and story, which are the two things I really loved about Christmas Carol, it felt like a big step down for me. Also, I did like how Scrooge was just. There though, that was really funny
OK! Moving on! From here on its probably gonna be way more positive lmao because I love VHSCC and this is it now!
The smaller cast feels weird with how big the OG one was, in general the different casting is gonna be interesting. The stages configuration is a pretty big difference, but it does feel like, intimate which was probably really fun in person, and I like how they're playing around with it! I'm also less of a fan of this screen so far, it basically added nothing but uh. We'll see ig
Scrooge actually screeching after Clark narrating him doing it was a fantastic addition lmao. It caught me (and seemingly the audience!) so off guard and it was hilarious!! AJ has generally been way less physical than Dylan so far, which I kinda missed, but ngl he completely won me over with that one lmao
Meredith is so pretty, she's nailing it!! As I knew she would but. Still felt noteworthy lol
OK ngl given how Jaime was just. Not in the first half but still credited I was 100% sure she was not gonna be there physically, just through the screen similar to Ali in the OG, so I was actually really fucking surprised when she came out??? Where were they hiding her for the entirety of the first half!!! Travesty!!!
God the spirits are just as attractive a year later (two technically by the time of me watching this, but shh), they're SO good. A stark contrast to Clark's awful wig, actually, my god what is up with that thing???
Fuck yeah, physical chains!!
I wonder why they changed some of the interstitial lyrics? I mean, the snore was hilarious, but this isn't the first change and the previous one didn't have a comedic element added in.
The new choreography is excellent, I'm actually really happy with the stage for facilitating these changes
I'm sorry Curt is too much of a sweetheart and I'm really having a hard time buying him as post-money Scrooge lmao. He eats the singing though! Brian did too, but weirdly enough only on stage and not in the recorded version lmao
Janaya is fr so talented, I'd love to see her in other Starkid stuff!
I miss Corey. Unrelated to where I'm at in the musical rn but I forgot to mention it at the start. Brian is just. A completely different Fred and it feels weird
Best song incoming! VHSCC is what made me fall in love with James- it was the first time I saw him in a bigger role, and I can't wait to see him in Cinderella's Castle
Just wanna clarify: Brian's Fred is still fun, he's just like, different from Corey's? He's more... Sarcastic, if that makes sense?
Every year that goes by makes Brian playing Tiny Tim funnier
Thief Brian is giving Junior vibes lmao
I knew about Della and Jim replacing the gay couple so that wasn't surprising, but a nice cameo nonetheless, especially with how Scrooge bought Jim's watch lmao
Okay the "screen" aka what seems to be a sheet of fabric being projected onto is just. Completely pointless and useless aside from minor ambience. Not only have they lost the VHS aesthetic it had, the actually fun and cool effects just don't seem to be possible with it and it sucks
I do love the rest of the vast staring at and then dragging Scrooge down, that was cool
Is. Is that the ghost of the Little Match girl orrrr...? Are we dealing with an AU situation? I mean, the Della and Jim resolution doesn't necessarily conflict with what we saw and is very sweet too but. This sure raises some timeline questions lol
Matching uncle and nephew sunglasses 🥰
I wish more Starkid shows included the curtain calls, those are always so fun and they feel important to recreate the feeling of watching live theater, even through a screen.
Anyway, I'm done watching now! Final thoughts? Might warm up to the first half upon rewatching (not like it hasn't happened to me with some shows before!), but initially I'm not the biggest fan. I can't say that this rendition of a Christmas Carol is better, but it's absolutely not worse either, and honestly that's all I wanted really. It was still tons of fun, and I liked it a lot! There's for sure a disconnect between the two halves though- heck, even between the two stories in the first half- and they feel... Too different to me, so I can't exactly say doubling the length was exactly... Worth it? One advantage of the OG is that it's short, which results in me frequently rewatching it, and this doesn't really have the same advantage, especially not considering I'll probably only really wanna rewatch the second half Anyway... Regardless, I still wish I could've paid them to watch this last year, it sucks that their site just. Doesn't work for me, so I'm glad that they made it accessible for me here. And now I'm eagerly awaiting Cinderella's Castle!
a field of flowers for the vigilant yaksha ft. xiao x gn! reader (they/them pronouns used)
synopsis: after so much time spent pursuing his duties and responsibilities, even he needs his rest and a field of multicoloured beauties just so happens to be the perfect form of it
quick note — more of a xiao centered piece so it's hardly considered an x reader :) it's implied in the end however so i'll still tag it as such!
WARNINGS: includes spoilers for xiao's backstory, very minimal mentions of blood (?) i think this is all that needs to be tagged but feel free to mention if ever i missed anything :)
eons and eons of suffering there he stands, once so pure and so clean but now blood is smeared on his hands. foes lay on the ground no longer breathing and moving, for the wrath brought down by this yaksha, it's enough to have someone beg endlessly for mercy.
for hundreds of years he has roamed to take life and bring forth death, and for the remaining there he is guarding his beautiful land.
no rest for the wicked, for they should all suffer. those who committ grave sins must be left alone just to wallow and wither.
in his most vulnerable moments where he can't help but scream at the pain. in the moments where his karma slowly makes him break. his strong and lean body seemingly fragile, littered with scars and bloodied. at his state, could someone really see him as the conqueror of demons, or just a poor little soul wishing to dance with the stars and sing tunes to a land afar?
he was once a weak little thing, forced to do things against his will by evil doers who wished for nothing more than damnation and greed. rex lapis had saved him, and he had become free. indebted, a contract had been made. to defend the lands of liyue till his last breath, to slice through opposers with polearm in tow till the very moment he no longer can.
in the present, yakshas and adepti can now be spotted among the common folk. liyue has changed over the many, many years. it is also to note that adepti are no longer tied to have to defend those unlike them, in the new age where humans are able to rule with no lord.
so now here he is, in a glorious space full of colorful and vibrant flowers. by then, he had started to think back to when he had last taken a moment to just breathe. the geo crystalflies flap their wings and illuminate the slowly darkening sky, their beautiful golden glow shining and showing the gleam of his similar colored eyes.
in a field of flowers, the lone yaksha finds rest. well deserved for a warrior who had fought thousands of battles.
for years he was bound by contract and a feeling of obligation to repay his lord. he had served non-stop, fighting and destroying evil almost every minute and dispersing it the next. how could one not get tired of doing the same thing every single day?
in this field he is not alone, a loving companion sitting with him to keep him company. he gets up on his feet and so do they- the companion, slowly moving around together with the gentle glow of golden crystalflies lighting up the space where they move in sync.
the night sky hangs high, the stars glimmer and shine up above. hearing the songs of the wind, they dance together and sing. with every step the binds that have shackled his poor heart slowly melt away, leaving nothing but molten iron in their wake
xiao- once a weak little soul, longing for nothing but freedom from pain and a life of peace. this field of flowers made just for him and the dance given to him by the one who cares for him most provides a sense of internal comfort that he knows he can only dream.
