Have you read that Des review in The Guardian where the reviewer grudgingly gave it to DT that despite his usual overacting he managed to reign it in as Dennis Nilsen? I saw it mentioned at thealogie's blog and went to find it. And then had a marathon of reading that reviewer's DT articles to seethe some more LOL. She really doesn't rate him much, that Lucy or something. And in general reading Guardian's reviews of his work it always felt to me that they (along with a good chunk of their readers who comment) go out of their way to not hype up the popular guy too much.

Undo my ESC
Good evening, folks! If you saw my first instalment of “Undo my ESC”, the annual feature where I make a year’s Eurovision better for me by making alterations in each country, you might have thought that ESC getting cancelled had dulled my edge, since, comparing to usual standards, I hardly changed much at all there. Well, that’s because, once again, we have seriously uneven semis, and Semi #1 would have been killer, whilst Semi #2 would have been dead. Here is what Í would have done to even those semis up! 🇦🇱 Albania: The Albanian delegation had seemingly done all it could to wash its hands of, well, two years of comparatively excellent results with authentic, melancholically poëtic and qualitative tracks, namely Malland Ktheju tokës. They brought in Byuckman, in whose interest it is for the contest to become as generically “radio-friendly” as possible, and the genius who brought us lyrics like “this is love/rain falls from above”. As judges. Of a serious musical festival. The foreign jurors did as expected, and voted for the appointed “bop”, but were foiled, however, by one of the minority Albanian jurors on the panel who put it low in her ranks. An actual renowned music professor who got called all the names under the sun for doing so. And so, to an ensuing shitstorm, the classical and powerful Shaj prevailed instead. Unfortunately, the battle was won but the war was lost, because the representative herself took the lessons of 2018-9, threw them down the aeroplane toilet on the way to LA, and ripped the spirit out of the song, reverting back to the previous Albanian trend of terrible “revamps” and laboured translations into English. The result, Fall from the sky, is but a husk of the original. In my ESC, I’d probably simply keeping the original version of Shaj, which was my uncontested #1 of all songs, but part of me would opt for Ajër, which I love almost as well but which doesn’t carry the baggage of hanging over my head like the sword of Democles this entire season. 🇦🇲 Armenia: I’ve more often than not loved the entries of Hayastan, from the joyous Jan Jan to the soaring Fly with me and defiant Walking out. To say they took a step back this year is kind – it was more like a powerful jump backwards that landed them in the nearest ocean, where they sank like a stone. It was one of the most singularly unpalatable NFs that I have ever watched in this era. Rather than retraumatise myself by going into detail about it, I’ll just say, I would have sent Srbuk or Artsvik again to get the top 10 that I feel both warranted!
🇦🇹 Austria: What a journey for Österreich. From Conchita to this guy, a perky homophobe who explicitly said he wished his kids would not turn out to be gay. He comes up with a third-rate impersonator of a third-rate Benjamin Ingrosso impersonator’s third-rate impersonation of a Timberlake b-side. I would throw that in the bin and invite Pænda back from last year for a shot at redemption after her gorgeous Limits got slept on in 2019.
🇧🇬 Bulgaria: Some people had the neck to say to me “who needs Hungary when Bulgaria is coming back?” Well, I do. Hungary were constantly in the top of my rankings, and just quietly and consistently brought quality. Bulgaria has brought me one good thing – Poli Genova’s œuvre – and a tonne of hype. Their song this year was one of the favourites, and I still can’t wrap my head around how other than the force of PR. It’s a bizarre, unsettling combination of passive-aggressive “look how much you’re making me hurt myself” lyrics with Disneyish saccharine accompaniment, topped off with a key change?! For want yet again of a national final, I would bring Poli back – third time even luckier? 🇨🇿 Czechia: The Bohemians (and Moravians) keep it contemporary but superficial for a third year running, although, thankfully, for the first time since they began doing national finals, we finally have a song without a dubious attitude towards women in the lyrics. Not that there is much to analyse in those lyrics. It’s a merely ok song for me, no better, no worse: a superior alternative would have been Barbara Mochowa’s lush and contemplative second effort, White and black holes, or the glorious 90s British indie-influenced All the blood. 🇩🇰 Denmark: Did Denmark confound international monitors into calling it the world’s happiest country by exposing them to the relentlessly cheery songs that they pick for Eurovision lately? And yet – I really do say yes to Yes, To a certain extent, to a limited amount of exposure, and despite the fact that it leans a little too hard into the territory of sounding like a second Little talks. It was one of the few good songs from DMGP – I also liked the 80s shoegaze-ish Den eneste goth– and I feel so mad at DR that they won’t give Ben and Tan a guaranteed second shot to represent their country after they won in front of an empty crowd. 🇪🇪 Estonia: The days of Eesti being Beesti seem like from a distant memory to me, but there was some quality and quirkiness in Eesti Laul, buried under mountains of beigedom, like the rich-voiced Egert Miller’s soulful Georgia, the jazzy Write about me, or the feisty earworm that was Ping pong. Instead, we got a dreary dirge with sub-Hallmark lines about wot luv is, which would have sounded dated in a contest 30 years ago, sung by a repugnant guy who tried to get people to vote for him last year by leaning on the idea that he was the “only true Estonian.” I’d have Egert get his rightful place as Jüri Pootsmann’s spiritual successor. 🇫🇮 Finland: I was one of the few to be jubilant when a bizarre ode to an Italian porn star with a backing track sounding like a violated version of Eläköön elämä came second in the polls to its spiritual opposite: a shy and rather awkward guy singing a quietly moving song about the passing of time. I love Looking back and wouldn’t change a thing. 🇬🇪 Georgia: You never know what to expect from Georgia, except the unexpected, and yet even I was surprised by what they came up with: a close-shaven guy with veins popping in his head screaming “why don’t you love meeeee?” to a rocky, electronic backdrop. Me being me, I actually do like it a lot. “Take me as I am” sounds like a veiled potshot at the big 5 and a vindication of Georgia’s “keep it weird, send what we want” philosophy. I could suggest that the lyrics, that sound like those of a spurned angsty teen, change a bit, but that would be defeating the purpose of Georgia: one takes them as they are. 🇬🇪 Greece: So, somehow, despite S!STERS coming dead last with 0 pts in the televote last year, using exclamation marks to substitute the letter I is now a thing in Eurovision with the advent of Superg!rl. I spent an hour watching folk waffle on in Greek in its reveal show only for them to reveal the song literally at the very end, so after that, it was a little underwhelming, and nowhere near as good as Better love in 2019. I don’t hate it – and the music video’s concept of her being an amazing superhero who can change the world, but instead she’s stopping people slipping over bananas and rescuing cats from trees is weirdly endearing, so it can stay, but I’d improve the lyrics, particularly in the chorus. “I’m a supergirl, supergirl, in a crazy world, crazy world” is not much higher than “this is love, rain falls from above” in historically bad Greek lyrics at ESC. 🇮🇸 Iceland: Daði Freyr came back from near-victory with the delightful Is this love, added a lovely inspiration in his newborn daughter to a similarly funky and playful track, and came out with Think about things. Unlike what usually happens with songs that are a little bit odd, I was positively surprised to see it walk the NF, and become a phenomenon even outside the ESC fandom. This was perfect and joyous from beginning to end. I hope Iceland will not be like the other Nordics, and will invite Daði directly back .🇱🇻 Latvia: I have come to enjoy the bizarre chaötic energy of Still breathing, It’s a hot mess, but I take weird over dull any day. It wasn’t my favourite in Supernova – that would be the effortlessly cool Polyester, an earworm with a social conscience, written about the cost of fast fashion but dismissed by many people as “she luvs t-shirts song lol”. Given that Samanta Tina tried over half a dozen times to go to ESC, finally won and then had the chance ripped out of her hands by the cancellation, I don’t have the heart to remove her from my ideal ESC 2020 though. She stays, but maybe the staging changes? It’s odd to have what you believe is a feminist anthem but then relegate your backing singers to in the distance, their faces shielded away. 🇲🇩 Moldova: Life is too short to follow Moldovan national finals, especially when you know, lately, that whoever is backed by the hilariously inaptly named Dream team will win there. They are like a parasite, sucking out the colour and fun out of a country that once had plenty of both – cross-reference Hora din Moldova or Lăutar to name just two examples. I guess out of an uninspiring lineüp, I’d go for Moldoviţa for having at least a hint of the brassy folk that used to be their calling card. 🇵🇱 Poland: Speaking of calling cards, after a one year hiatus with an arresting combo of white voice and rocky instrumentation, Poland has returned to what it has most often done in recent years – presented us with an absolute dirge, Empires, which seems like it was written by an unenthusiastic English student whose homework assignment (for which they received a generous C-) was to write a poëm with a bunch of metaphors “we’re moths to a flame, birds to a pane of glass, gasoline and a match”. Despite having a big music industry from which to choose many gems, Poland offers me little alternative choice given that there were only three songs in their grand final – one by the Czech representative last year who, as you might guess from what I said literally a sentence up, isn’t even Polish!Horny Elf, who’s contractually obliged to write only creepy lyrics for songs, tried to represent Polska with a song inspired by a true-life situation where he went around Tel Aviv with a cardboard cutout of one of the hostesses of the show. It’s a love song inspired by gallivanting around with a piece of cardboard. Addressed to that actual hostess. And it’s an almighty earworm that hasn’t escaped my mind since. Amazingly, his Lucy would be my Polish representative. 🇵🇹 Portugal: Portugal is another country beloved by me by for dancing to the beat of its own drummer, or perhaps, rather shedding tears to the strumming of its own fado guitar. They struggled being different, they won being different, and for the last few years they’ve struggled again, despite having a lot of support for both O jardim and Telemóveis amongst fans. This year, the televote went for one interesting song, the charmingly Gallic, accordion-drenched Passe-partout, a song about a cultured girl shaking off her boorish ex who could “never even get into Piaf”, whilst the jury got behind another interesting song, Gerbera, an entrancing, arresting and poëtic song laden with metaphor about the idea of music competing itself. This let Medo de sentir, second in both polls, turn silver into gold. It’s a lovely, heart-felt track, but rather unexceptional - I would have had one of the other more singular songs win. 🇸🇲 San Marino: The weird boil on the face of ESC that somehow never pops, SM is back after its bewildering qualification with a tone-deaf dentist wailing to a microwaved disco song… with something actually palatable, sort of. The aptly named Freaky is dated, odd, overly busy, but Senhit has a lot of charisma, and the idea of “break[ing] all the rules, mak[ing] up some new [ones] and destroy[ing] all of them too” and “life goes by too quickly not to be freaking it up”, well, maybe we do get on board. 🇷🇸 Serbia: Serbia is usually a byword for quality at the contest – they won with one of the best 21st century winners hands down in Molitva, and also sent some of the most beautiful compositions in the contest’s history at the hands of Željko. This year, they decided to join in the leitmotif of reliable countries sucking by sending a group that sound like a third-rate mid-2000s girl band from Transnistria when beautiful songs like Cvet sa Prokletija were right there. 🇨🇭 Switzerland: Fair play to the Swiss for not doing a Cyprus and leaning in on their success with their male Fuego, She gat me, and instead going in a completely different direction with this moody effort. I’m not entirely convinced by the teenage emo-ish lyrics or the unnecessary falsetto, but Répondez-moi is a refreshing effort, and has the bonus of being in French too! And the automatic qualifiers: 🇫🇷 France: You’ve heard of France, right? You know, that wee country south of Belgium, north of Andorra, not much of a music industry… or so you’d think, given that the troolee jeenyuss new delegation, who abandoned their brilliant national final which showcased how diverse and qualitative their music scene is despite it being a huge success in the fandom, and instead reached out to the writer of last year’s last place song for the UK and a few other rentaswedes and they produced something that sounds like a b-side that not even Westlife would have recorded, replete with a stock key change. About as French as IKEA köttbullar. A real shame for one of Europe’s most highly esteemed cultural hotbeds. If they wanted to pick Tom Leeb, who seems like a nice guy and has written some lovely music, he could have made his own song and it would have indubitably been scores better than this. 🇪🇸 Spain: I’m going to apply this to all the automatic qualifiers voting on this semi-final: they scrapped a national final for this? OT was not an ideal format as last year demonstrated with its shit show of contestants sabotaging themselves so as not to get picked for ESC – but still. There’s not much I can say about this other than I don’t like it much and I’d rather Spain return to a proper NF. You don’t spend time trapped on a bus where this song with its torturous falsetto was on replay and emerge with fond feelings. 🇬🇧 United Kingdom: Usually, in this space, I can point to a song that the UK should have sent and that I fell in love with – like I wish I loved you more or You. Once again, though, another big 6 nation scrapped their NF after tanking it with a bizarre format last year. The BBC said nothing for months, then were unwilling to spend tv time on ESC this year so just blurted out an announcement of an announcement in about 40 seconds after some dance show. And then they dropped this song. It’s… passable at best, with an annoying chorus (especially that beat in “my last… breath”) and a staggering amount of repetition in a song that clocks in at only around 80% of the standard Eurovision song length. James Newman surely could have come up with something better. It’s a baby step in the right direction, but one taken at the shore where you need to start running to avoid getting pulled away in a rip.

What Lockdown 2.0 Looks Like: Harsher Rules, Deeper Confusion
By Damien Cave

Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city, is becoming a case study in handling a second wave of infections. There are lots of unanswered questions.

Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne, is grappling with a spiraling coronavirus outbreak that has led to a lockdown with some of the toughest restrictions in the world — offering a preview of what many urban dwellers elsewhere could confront in coming weeks and months.
The new lockdown is the product of early success; the country thought it had the virus beat in June. But there was a breakdown in the quarantine program for hotels. Returning travelers passed the virus to hotel security guards in Melbourne, who carried the contagion home.
Even after masks became mandatory in the city two weeks ago, the spread continued. And now, as officials try to break the chain of infections, Melbourne is being reshaped by sweeping enforcement and fine print. A confounding matrix of hefty fines for disobedience to the lockdown and minor exceptions for everything from romantic partners to home building has led to silenced streets and endless versions of the question: So, wait, can I ____?
Restaurant owners are wondering about food delivery after an 8 p.m. curfew began on Sunday night. Teenagers are asking if their boyfriends and girlfriends count as essential partners. Can animal shelter volunteers walk dogs at night? Are house cleaners essential for those struggling with their mental health? Can people who have been tested exercise outside?
“This is such a weird, scary, bizarro time that we live in,” said Tessethia Von Tessle Roberts, 25, a student in Melbourne who admits to having hit a breaking point a few days ago, when her washing machine broke.
“Our health care workers are hustling around the clock to keep us alive,” she said. “Our politicians are as scared as we are, but they have to pretend like they have a better idea than we do of what’s going to happen next.”
Pandemic lockdowns, never easy, are getting ever more confusing and contentious as they evolve in the face of second and third rounds of outbreaks that have exhausted both officials and residents. With success against the virus as fleeting as the breeze, the new waves of restrictions feel to many like a bombing raid that just won’t end.
For some places, risk calculations can change overnight. In Hong Kong, officials banned daytime dining in restaurants last month, only to reverse themselves a day later after an outcry. Schools in some cities are opening and closing like screen doors in summer.
In many areas where the virus has retreated and then resurged, the future looks like a long, complicated haul. Leaders are reaching for their own metaphors to try to explain it.

In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has compared his opening and shutting of businesses to a
“dimmer switch.”
Dan Andrews, the premier in Victoria, the state of which Melbourne is the capital, has repeatedly referred to “pilot light mode” for industries like construction and meatpacking, which have been ordered to temporarily reduce their work forces.
Whatever the metaphor, the situation is bleak.
In Melbourne, a city of five million that is considered a capital of food and culture, the pandemic has come raging back even after a so-called Stage 3 lockdown began in early July — until recently the highest level of restrictions.
Officials have been flummoxed at every turn by the persistent complacency of just enough people to let the virus thrive and multiply.
Traffic data showed people driving more in July than they had during the first Stage 3 lockdown, in March and April. Even worse, almost nine out of 10 people with Covid-19 had not been tested or isolated when they first felt sick, Mr. Andrews, the state’s top leader, said in late July. And 53 percent had not quarantined while waiting for their test results.
“That means people have felt unwell and just gone about their business,” Mr. Andrews said.
Sounding the alarm, he made face masks mandatory the next day, on July 22.
Still, infections have continued to rise. They peaked at 753 new cases on July 30, and have hovered around 500 a day ever since, with the death toll in Victoria now standing at 147, after 11 deaths were recorded on Monday.
Those figures, while far less troublesome than those in the United States, have paved the way for a Stage 4 lockdown — what officials are calling a “shock and awe” attack on the virus — that will last at least six weeks.

Overwhelming force, with precision, seems to be the goal. The chief modelers of the pandemic response in Australia have found that the virus can be suppressed only if more than 70 percent of the population abides by social distancing guidelines and other public health rules.
Mr. Andrews said the new restrictions would take 250,000 more people out of their routines, in the hopes of reaching the necessary threshold.
So retail stores will be closed. Schools will return to at-home instruction. Restaurants will be takeout or delivery only. Child-care centers will be available only for permitted workers.
Those restrictions are already well understood. The rules requiring more explanation are tied to the curfew and industries that have to cut back.
Large-scale construction projects of more than three stories, for example, will have to reduce their on-site work force by 75 percent, and workers will not be able to work at more than one location. Small-scale construction cannot have more than five workers.
All of which sounds clear. But does a bathroom renovation, for example, amount to home building in an apartment with one bathroom? And what about fixing things that break, like Ms. Von Tessle Roberts’s washing machine?
Some businesses, like cleaning services, are already emailing customers to say they think they can do some work, for people who pay through welfare or who need help for mental health reasons. But, like many others, they are still seeking official clarification.

Mr. Andrews, a Labor politician sometimes described as awkward and paternal, has become the dad everyone needs answers from. He now oversees, under the lockdown rules, what may be the country’s most intrusive bureaucracy since its days as a penal colony.

Frequently Asked Questions
Updated August 4, 2020
I have antibodies. Am I now immune?
I’m a small-business owner. Can I get relief?
What are my rights if I am worried about going back to work?
Should I refinance my mortgage?
What is school going to look like in September?
As of right now, that seems likely, for at least several months. There have been frightening accounts of people suffering what seems to be a second bout of Covid-19. But experts say these patients may have a drawn-out course of infection, with the virus taking a slow toll weeks to months after initial exposure. People infected with the coronavirus typically produce immune molecules called antibodies, which are protective proteins made in response to an infection. These antibodies may last in the body only two to three months, which may seem worrisome, but that’s perfectly normal after an acute infection subsides, said Dr. Michael Mina, an immunologist at Harvard University. It may be possible to get the coronavirus again, but it’s highly unlikely that it would be possible in a short window of time from initial infection or make people sicker the second time.
The stimulus bills enacted in March offer help for the millions of American small businesses. Those eligible for aid are businesses and nonprofit organizations with fewer than 500 workers, including sole proprietorships, independent contractors and freelancers. Some larger companies in some industries are also eligible. The help being offered, which is being managed by the Small Business Administration, includes the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. But lots of folks have not yet seen payouts. Even those who have received help are confused: The rules are draconian, and some are stuck sitting on money they don’t know how to use. Many small-business owners are getting less than they expected or not hearing anything at all.
Employers have to provide a safe workplace with policies that protect everyone equally. And if one of your co-workers tests positive for the coronavirus, the C.D.C. has said that employers should tell their employees -- without giving you the sick employee’s name -- that they may have been exposed to the virus.
It could be a good idea, because mortgage rates have never been lower. Refinancing requests have pushed mortgage applications to some of the highest levels since 2008, so be prepared to get in line. But defaults are also up, so if you’re thinking about buying a home, be aware that some lenders have tightened their standards.
It is unlikely that many schools will return to a normal schedule this fall, requiring the grind of online learning, makeshift child care and stunted workdays to continue. California’s two largest public school districts — Los Angeles and San Diego — said on July 13, that instruction will be remote-only in the fall, citing concerns that surging coronavirus infections in their areas pose too dire a risk for students and teachers. Together, the two districts enroll some 825,000 students. They are the largest in the country so far to abandon plans for even a partial physical return to classrooms when they reopen in August. For other districts, the solution won’t be an all-or-nothing approach. Many systems, including the nation’s largest, New York City, are devising hybrid plans that involve spending some days in classrooms and other days online. There’s no national policy on this yet, so check with your municipal school system regularly to see what is happening in your community.
On Tuesday, he answered questions from reporters about dog-walking (allowed after curfew, sort of, only near home) and other subjects of great confusion at a news conference in Melbourne.
Thanking those who complied with the new rules and scolding those who did not, he announced that no one in self-isolation would now be allowed to exercise outdoors. A door-knocking campaign to check in on 3,000 people who had Covid-19 found that 800 of them were not at home.
All 800 have been referred to the Victoria police for investigation. The fine for violators going forward, he said, will be 4,957 Australian dollars, $3,532.
Working, even legally, will also become trickier. Other than, say, hospital workers with formal identification, everyone traveling for a job deemed essential during the lockdown must carry a formal document — a work permit signed by the employer and employee.
For Cara Devine, who works at a wine store that closes at 8 p.m., that means carrying a government form with her everywhere, and hoping that the police recognize her task as essential when she heads home after the curfew. But she also worried about the Uber drivers who take her back and forth.
Image

“Even before the newest restrictions, I’ve had two Uber drivers being really late picking up from the shop because they got stopped by the police, taking about an hour out of their work time,” she said.
The police are already confronting opposition. On at least four occasions in the last week, they reported having to smash the windows of cars and pull people out after they refused to provide a name and address at a police checkpoint. The Victoria police commissioner, Shane Patton, said a 38-year-old woman had also been charged with assault after attacking a police officer who had stopped her for not wearing a face mask.
Some criminologists are questioning whether the harsher enforcement will help. Mostly, though, Melburnians are just trying to endure.
Walking to get groceries, Peter Barnes, 56, said he welcomed the stricter rules, though he admitted his city was starting to feel like George Orwell’s “1984,” with the heavy hand of the state around every corner.
Those focused solely on the economics, he said, should remember the obvious: “You can’t hire a corpse. Very bad employment prospects for people who are dead.”
By Monday night, the city seemed to be in listening mode. The streets were emptying out, silent in hibernation.
“It’s like a Sunday in the 1950s,” said Mark Rubbo, the owner of Readings, Melbourne’s largest independent bookstore. He also noted that people were stocking up again on books through online orders, with a memoir called “The Happiest Man on Earth,” about a Holocaust survivor, becoming a runaway hit.
Ms. Von Tessle Roberts has found another solution, perhaps just as likely to grow in popularity: Stand on your front porch and scream. That’s the name she has given to an event she posted on Facebook, set for Friday at 7 p.m. By Tuesday afternoon, 70,000 people had expressed an interest in joining her collective shout in anguish.
“Yelling is great,” she said. “It’s less dehydrating than crying.”

Hello from the plague-ridden city of Boston! I wish first reassure everyone that I am fine. I am at no particular risk of catching the novel coronavirus, and if I somehow defy the odds and come down with COVID-19, I am mainly in danger of spending a couple of weeks with a really shitty cough. The hospitalization pattern for this thing is a lot like that of the seasonal flu -- the very old, the immunosuppressed, and those with restricted lung function, otherwise known collectively as 'people who get pneumonia a lot' -- with the interesting twist that, much like varicella zoster, young kids seem to be much less affected. The COVID-19 experience according to both CDC graphs and trip reports from redditors who have tested positive for it is that otherwise healthy people who aren't super old and fragile get to sit through the flu. I did that back in November with the regular rogues gallery of viruses and am not eager to do it again, but at this point I have better odds of landing myself in the hospital by slipping in the shower. On the other hand, I live with someone who has Crohn's and is on immunosuppressive medications, and someone else who has been having mystery medical problems for the past couple of years, involving but not limited to shortness of breath unresolved by asthma inhalers. So my role in this pandemic is to wash my hands a lot and protect the more vulnerable members of the herd. As of yesterday all of my in-person jobs have canceled themselves, and I am consequently stuck at home not sick for the next couple weeks at least. As of this writing, Boston is not officially on lockdown. No one's bolted inside the house, the shops are open and we can all go out and get stuff unfettered. The governor has declared a State of Emergency, mostly so they can access the extra funds and enforce a quarantine on people who have actually been exposed to the virus. Everyone lost their shit for about a day and a half and went out to buy toilet paper like it was about to be illegal. Then we calmed down a tick and realized the situation was less "T-Virus outbreak" and more "influenza++ bonus level". You don't need to hermetically seal yourself inside the house, just, like, don't go to any parties. Or hold a leadership conference, like the fuckwickets at BioGen. Those particular arrogant motherfuckers are directly responsible for most of the chaos here, since they're in an industry that's centered in the same part of town as most of the big universities, which are now either running classes online, or shut down completely. It's quiet but not dead outside. The weirdest part is actually seeing this happen in pleasant spring weather. Every other time I've lived through this, it's been because the National Weather Service has given us a couple days' warning that we're about to be on a first-name basis with a fuck-off huge storm. Although it is interesting to see how many people don't really know how detergents work. They seem to think "hand soap" is some sort of magical virus-killing substance and freak the fuck out at the empty shelves, when there is an entire aisle full of shampoo, body wash, and facial cleanser two feet to their left. It's all based on sodium laureth sulfate, guys; just pick the bottle that smells the best and go on with your day. Most of the anxiety is, as usual, caused by ignorance. Not just in the sense that people don't know a lot of things, but also that we can't know some of it until more time has passed. The R0 ("r-naught", basic rate of reproduction, or the average number of people infected by a contagious carrier) of coronavirus is 2 and a bit, which is worse than most varieties of influenza (1-2) but way better than shit like measels (10+), AIDS (2-5), bane of my childhood chickenpox (3-5), or the classic poliovirus from back in the day (5-7). The mortality rate is being reported as up to 3.4% (as figured using only confirmed cases), but postulated as more like 1% (as estimated by the CDC), which is about ten times seasonal flu, but way the fuck under other university-closing favorites like community-acquired meningitis, which runs right around 20%. All of these numbers are to be taken with a small boulder of salt. The problem is that all of the math you use to get them depends on having an accurate count of cases, which we do not. It's becoming increasingly clear that Novel Coronavirus 2019, like other things in the coronavirus class, can cause symptoms that range really widely in severity. You might get a week of fever and coughing, you might get viral pneumonia and die. The majority of people who catch this coronavirus will probably never see a doctor; they just stay home and swill NyQuil like they would with any other cold. The official count, by definition, includes only people who come to the attention of those doing the counting. Which, in the beginning stages, is restricted to those with symptoms severe enough to require medical treatment. In other words, odds are that COVID-19 is a lot more widespread than we think, but also a lot less dangerous to most people. This is not to say we shouldn't do anything about it. Most kids didn't die of measles, either. I find the graphs of mortality rate by age to be particularly intriguing. The absolute rates are basically zero for small children, don't go up by any interesting amount through the 50s (that is, a lot of the increase could be attributed to people picking up confounding factors, like pulmonary damage from other illnesses or smoking, or progression of other co-morbid conditions), and then shoot way the fuck up for 60+. I've seen the hypothesis floated that kids don't suffer much because their immune systems aren't primed for this thing and don't react too strongly. Which raises the question of whether people in the 60+ category are dying at much higher rates as an artifact of the math (i.e., small sample size of elderly cases combined with the general fragility of age might cause an artificial jump in rates), or because they were exposed to something in their youth which the younger generation were not that has prompted their immune systems to over-respond with inflammation, thus raising their odds of developing severe hyperthermia and pneumonia. Anyway. I'm going to be bored as fuck and bereft of income for the next few weeks, so expect to see a lot of drivel here. I think the personal things are mainly going to go on Patreon, seeing as I have to do something for money while all the theaters are shut down, but I'll try to also finish a lot of half-complete things and dump them here, so y'all have something to read. from Blogger https://ift.tt/3aWjSgl via IFTTT -------------------- Enjoy my writing? An Authentic City
The thought of meeting total strangers from online spaces has always seemed a uniquely terrifying prospect to me. Perhaps because of the anonymous culture in which I spent most of my time, social spaces have always had a speculative disconnection from reality, either due to pseudonymous or anonymous nature, that encouraged either a looser definition of reality or a heightened critical interpretation that suspends a great deal of ideas and concepts in a column full of at best dubiously accurate information. Reading things in a manner which holds that they may or may not be real forges a very bizarre scrutiny as welcome trade-off for allowing people to escape or at least make voluntary certain aspects of their existence. Even if something is lost in terms of identity, something is gained in the amount of new flexibility to experiment in ways that would otherwise be denied.
In most cases I think this is a healthy state of affairs, to take people seriously but maybe not literally. To care less about the physical form or immutable characteristics of the agent delivering information, or even ignore the ethical components in which some incongruence might cause a critical disconnect in a more physical space. To many people I think such a thing is a great liberation, to explore components of your character or interactions with other people that you could simply never have access to.
Such is definitely the case with me. There are certainly elements I do not feel privileged or afforded in person that, without online communication, would simply be lost to me. Downwind of this is a deep concern that perhaps I’ve established some ostentatious front, some unreal impostor doing all this communication with total strangers who at best I hope to call friends. It should go without saying that in many of these instances, all that people tend to have access to are handles, forming brands; social media effigies and facsimiles in place of the tangible, observable features of their personality.
Absolutely stricken with this fear, I set out to conquer it Friday morning at 9 AM, but actually it became 10 AM. It turns out I also needed to let the dogs out before leaving and had forgot about this, so 10:30 AM. From where I live, it’s two hours and some change to Charleston, South Carolina, where I am meeting the second Jewish person I have ever met.
Opening Up
The details of the trip there were largely forgettable, the usual exorcism of nervous energy through listening to powerviolence and biting my lips or blastbeating my hands on the steering wheel barreling down the interstate at 80 miles per hour. Managed to arrive a small little coffee shop right at two or so hours in Charleston, a city I’ve never actually spent a ton of time in as an adult. Cities are extremely large and noisy, very busy. The sheer number of bodies moving through, in and out of them confounds my want for a relative intimacy. There is a paralysis to it all, that the small stretch of land I know so deeply is taken from me and replaced with a paralysis brought about by an over-stimulation of sorts.
Somewhat still frightened at what things will be like, I walk in and have the sudden realization that we could not be more obvious as strangers demystifying some curious affect. There is a handshake, a smile, and a plea to go to the restroom. I shake some jitters off and greet Jay again (obviously Jay is not his name, but it’s his name for all intents and purposes). He offers me an espresso while I’m still in a quiet shock and of course I accept, I’ve never had an espresso before.
We sit down at a small wooden bar facing out to the road and begin the process, making small talk the way normal people would. Maybe? The circumstances certainly don’t feel normal, a bit more naked than that in a way. There are things I’ve only ever typed simply because there is no incentive to say them out loud. A great number of things it occurs to me, never before have I felt so silly constantly mispronouncing things I love to chit-chat about or analyze in pseudonymous spaces.
Jay’s demystification was also quite fun for me. I settled on wearing pineapple pants very much ahead of time just to make sure I was easily spot-able, on the other hand Jay was very obvious in a way that’s difficult to describe. Even down to the way he held his cigarette while smoking, it was obvious he wasn’t from around here.
We talked about our brothers and then about our families, when Jay told me about his parents and how his interest in psychoanalysis were no doubt cultured from youth. I think about epistemic lineage, how the things most people consider or think about have a highly cultured and traceable structure, and how this accounts for the lack of incentive to talk about anything deep or meaningful around my usual haunts, the places where I’m real.
I’m discovering, slowly albeit, how good it feels even though I must seem pretty silly about things. After noticing the ideas I share in common with Hannah Arendt, something Jay had inadvertently introduced me to less than a month earlier, we read pieces of The Human Condition (I believe it was) on Jay’s tablet.
Out comes a small wooden plank with a shotglass full of espresso and a small glass of water. I instantly reach for the espresso when Jay tells me that the water should go first. For cleansing the palate obviously!
Obviously, huh. Quietly I begin considering the depth of things that aren’t obvious to me. Jay is a very cosmopolitan person while the list of cities I’ve set foot in could probably fit as fingers on two hands. In fact, perhaps nothing could have articulated the contrast between two people quite so well. I’m very intensely self-aware of an unsophisticated classlessness that might seem like some sort of self-abasement to others but to me very much feels like just how things are. I do not travel, I do not read. I don’t really have much of an education to speak of. When I bring this up, people say that stuff doesn’t matter but this awareness is something that I don’t think is motivated by any kind of resentment, as I’m certainly not resentful of Jay. With a near immediacy I feel a deep sense of relief that I immediately love Jay. It’s just that there is an articulation I don’t feel like I have access to, a finite number on the experiences I will ever have to glean insight from or develop some kind of feeling on. An acknowledgement that at the root of humbleness is humility; a life lived in perpetual embarrassment at how much greater the world itself is than any singular person.
We go on about minutia and I feel so great finally getting all these words out of my mouth to smooth out the difference between whatever I am digitally and whatever I am physically.
Authenticity
We arrive at a southern BBQ joint in Mount Pleasant just outside of Charleston. I’m even less familiar generally with Mount Pleasant but that doesn’t really matter, the idea is that no visitor and much less a friend could leave the south without experiencing authentic southern barbecue.
In the American southeast, the only region that has truly figured it out, barbecue is pulled pork (sometimes pork shoulder, but best when it’s a whole hog), smoked and covered in a vinegar-based BBQ sauce which is, like all good things, created to taste. Being the lovely day that it was, I selfishly opted for us to sit outside. We roll over the menu and discuss beer and food, and in the process a waiter approaches us in one of the most puzzlingly aggressive manners I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s almost a caricature out of some film the way he stands, delivering the laurels of this restaurant as an imaginary photographer would zoom his imaginary camera directly onto his eyebrows, straightened with a purposed fury as he informs us that this place was rated the number 2 restaurant for southern cuisine in all the land.
We place our order for beer and food and our waiter scuttles away, after which I remark how bizarre it is for a genuine southern restaurant to have British staff, as clued in by his accent.
I tell Jay the same thing I’m writing now, that this is doubtful because authenticity itself is such a strange concept. For southern BBQ, it’s much more likely that the authentic thing would be had by a merchant with a portable smoker on the side of the road of any given main street. What I’ve discovered since is how much more I had to say about authenticity. What I couldn’t articulate then, the thing that struck me so odd about our waiter, wasn’t that I have no faith that a British chef could not produce authentic southern cuisine but that authenticity is dubious itself, something I feel much more intensely and immediacy as we talk.
I had been scared for days leading up to then that I have constructed some version of myself that is if not a lie to other people, than a certain smoothing of the reality of things. People message me for advice lifting and exercising when I’m still a pretty overweight guy, all things considered. Maybe they wouldn’t do such a thing if they saw me. People talk to me about firearms, things I’ve owned and been intimately aware of for perhaps three years now. People talk to me about all manner of things I would never interject into reality, because I have no real confident voice in basically any of it.
Online I am allowed a layer of sincerity and affection I simply don’t have access to in reality. In no way am I less interested in these things, in learning about people, in empathizing with them or engaging with them. There is no irony to it, no disinterest in the aesthetics I commit myself to. I love Jay because of the contrast between us, because Jay can help me articulate things in a way I never would’ve been able to; to pattern match the observations I’ve had on my own to the language the institution itself has. Even beyond this, Jay is a powerful ally in that even though my core convictions aren’t always able to articulate, he is perpetually at the ready to really understand me even if the things I’m saying are frivolous (they might be! they usually are!).
Just like me, I have zero doubt from the killing intent our waiter had that what he is doing is not done simply out of a coerced obligation. Just as I can confront this now, I can also confront the reality that there truly is no separation between different versions of me. I am no impostor keeping up a facade I’m uninterested in when finally given flesh.
Contrast
Jay is an exceptionally well-read person. Maybe he wouldn’t describe himself that way, but this is what you’re going to appear to people who are functionally not literate.
We set out on foot (people do this in cities right?) to a nearby coffee shop, on the way I enjoyed the ways in which Jay illuminated how much of the thoughts I had about serious things had some psychoanalytical phrasing or framing, a comforting revelation in a number of ways. It turns out that in many ways simply thinking something in solitude is agonizing, the chance to share them and, what’s more, discover a great well of corroboration is no small gift and, if even for the moment, I’m happy to have received in part.
I got a macchiato. I’ve never had one before of course. Jay tells me that the perfect macchiato should have an excellent balance of bitterness, something which I can’t possibly know and doesn’t really have any bearing on how delicious it was and how much I needed it in retrospect.
The one instance I remember quite vividly however was perhaps the most revealing. We were discussing psychoanalysis and repression, and I asked Jay outright if he thought that repression had some relationship to metacognition. I’ve since realized I have developed an awful knack for picking out particularly interesting things people will say and then immediately interrogating them about it with an intent stare waiting for a reply. I don’t mean to be intimidating, I just dislike letting interesting moments pass unseized. His response was that he had no idea, that it would require a much more in-depth familiarization with someone and that this knowledge needs a certain amount of consent from the subject. It’s reassuring considering the nature of psychoanalysis, but what I’ve since wished I would’ve said after this moment where Jay looks out across the deck is that I feel a remarkable amount of insight from the distance between us.
I care primarily about art. Not in the classical definition of things, but in the inherent artfulness of the world itself. I feel a deep conviction that people can do very little, take very few steps and interact with very few people without creating narratives of some nature, and that the best any person (projection, read this as me) could hope for is to be at the heart of as many beautiful ones as possible. To be a wonderful friend, a warm person. These are things I don’t consider myself now and certainly have a hard time meeting the standards of as much as I should, but they influence and inform my relationships with people so deeply that I would be remiss not to mention it.
Even in a pragmatic sense, I feel very much like an artist too inept to properly express himself at anything. I adore artists as I’m jealous of their singular dedication to one thing above the many joys of creation given to people. If I have arrived at any single correct thought, any astute observation, it stems primarily from this. Regardless of what else I am confronted with, nothing will make as much sense to me reflexively as art itself.
I feel this relative difference between us in small tokens throughout any conversation. When we talk about resentment, I feel it’s a problem of removing people of a call to action and creation while Jay reads it as part of a cognitive system. Both may be correct, but my observation is motivated by wanting people to explore and articulate themselves unencumbered. When Jay considers psychoanalysis to be something too strong to be engaged in without consent, I see art itself as something people simply don’t have the option to opt out of in the first place. Psychoanalysis has a rich canon of materials to draw from, but fiction and artifice have always held a unique position above all else; in many ways it’s through artistic and creative expression that we make us and pay tribute to the rich history of thought itself. Building an AK47 will remove the necessity of much of Mao’s work, much of Joseph Campbell’s bibliography is easily derived from mythical texts themselves.
There is no feeling of these positions being at odds however, more a wonderful revelation of how well the two work in concert with each other; how easily the conversation sways and meanders without any hint of irrelevancy in sight.
Friendship
Walking with Jay along the streets of Mount Pleasant to a used book store, he is sharing with me small bits of Lacan who seems like a pretty interesting fella. We talk about the development of bants in the western canon, which is the first time I ever mention Titus Andronicus out loud.
We arrive at the bookstore which could not be more adorable, kitschy wallpaper on the glass resembling piles and piles of books hiding a store that is piles and piles of books. Of course I walk in with the desire for two books in particular, while we both silently separate to browse the bibliography on offer.
I do not find what I’m looking for, but I do find interesting artifacts my friends have enjoyed. While browsing I realize the necessity of these people who are newly revealed to not be internet strangers. They are real people. In front of me sits a series of novella-length writing by Albert Camus and I’m immediately reminded of the treasured relationships I’ve managed to cultivate somehow. The serious people I am obscenely happy to have had become an influence on my life, the cultivation of my person perhaps none of them are aware of regardless of my attempts to explain to them. Albert Camus, Virgina Woolf, Leo Tolstoy, I grab this list of books eager to learn more about the aesthetics my friends cling to so tightly that I might learn more about them.
Just as I make this consideration, Jay approaches me with the cutest pulp scifi book telling me that perhaps I’ve got too much and perhaps I should consider whether these are books I feel like I should read or if they’re books I’m genuinely interested in. I of course immediately ignore this advice.
Parting
I don’t know how to start things and I don’t really know how to end things. After making a decent trek back to our cars and a somber realization that work calls the very next morning, we decide to leave. I was determined to hand Jay a token of the south, some coffee I’ve come to love recently that he could only get from here, hoping he enjoys it. He tells me that we should meet again and, embarrassingly, the thought had never occurred to me. Something about this instance did (and still does) feel positively magical, that such a thing could happen twice was simply not a consideration. Of course I said yes! He suggested I visit New York City, which of course I said yes to!
What I realized parting, more than anything else, was how much time I had spent worrying when I should’ve spent time preparing. I didn’t think to bring shoes to enjoy a match of tennis, I didn’t think about the things most prescient to talk about with one of the most influential people in my life. The feeling of a deep frustration with the lack of time to be free to engage with the people I cherish and the things I hold dear, the accomplishments I want to make in no small part thanks to them. The question of authenticity, the real me is illuminated by the people I choose to become my treasured peers, influences that compel me to refuse to leave the totality of my passion inert and left to wither in an environment devoid of stimulation. There was never a separation between the person I felt I appeared to people and the person that I am, only a figure lacking definition and much magic is stored in that revelation.
Of course I simply can’t be done seeing their faces, hearing their voices, picking at their brain in a bizarre manner in which nothing has changed; the only people who exist then are the people we choose to hear. We are something old constantly becoming something new, and regardless of the influence we claim little will change us more in the long run than the influence we exert on each other. It’s precisely the indulgence of these influences that I deeply desire, more than the answer of the dubious nature of authenticity itself.

The Bull Market Checklist To Living Your Best Life Today (Part 1)
Maybe I'm confounding some positive things that are going on with my life, however I haven't felt this great about the present condition of the business sectors since 2007. Certainly, everything went to hellfire the following couple of years and mass bloodletting resulted. However, that is neither here nor there.
Starting at the present moment, we are living in the best of times. On the off chance that you've been a Financial Samurai peruser for at any rate a year or are a sensibly smart speculator, your total assets ought to hit new record highs. Thusly, the measure of speculation pay you're producing so as to live free ought to likewise be creating new record sums.
With the Fed now immovably on our side, speculators have increased new trust in going out on a limb. Further, we would all be able to gain hazard free cash in our investment accounts at a loan cost significantly higher than the 10-year security yield.
This twofold success is uncommon.
I'd like to present a few musings on the best way to put and spend in a positively trending business sector to carry on with a superior life. Since goodness knows, the great occasions can't keep going forever.
The Bull Market Financial Checklist To Living Your Best Life
1) Take bit of leeway of lower rates. With the 10-year security yield at two-year lows, contract rates and longer term understudy advance rates are likewise at two-year lows. You should exploit by renegotiating your home loan and your understudy advances on the off chance that you have any.
Lamentably, for those of you with Mastercard obligation and other momentary advances, rates have not fallen in light of the fact that the short-end of the yield bend has expanded since the Fed begun raising the Fed Funds rate toward the finish of 2015.
I'm wrapping up my 7/1 ARM at 2.75% with all expenses prepared in addition to a $2,400 credit this late spring. On the off chance that I held as of recently to bolt, I may have had the option to get 2.625%.
2) Stay presented to hazard resources. Stocks, securities, and land are your companions in a declining loan fee condition. Lower financing costs make owning different resources with higher loan fees or conceivably higher returns progressively alluring. Loan fees are probably going to remain low for more.
I can't reveal to you how much hazard presentation you ought to have since everyone's hazard resilience and money related circumstance is extraordinary. Everything I can say is that you have to evaluate your hazard resistance and afterward contribute as needs be.
The most legitimate hazard resource for me to put resources into is land since lower home loan rates acquire all the more land request. We've just had a huge log jam in numerous land advertises in 2H2018. Without an adjustment 2H2018 I'd be increasingly wary.
With home loan rates generally 1% lower than in 2018 combined with a retreat in land costs, it is my conviction that land will bounce back or if nothing else remain unfaltering in the coming years. The Fed has broadcast it is happy to be accommodative (cut rates) to fight off a subsidence if important.
3) Ask for a raise or change occupations. We're at present at a 3.6% national joblessness rate in America. That is near full work. This is the ideal opportunity to request a raise or chase for the "impeccable occupation" on the off chance that you are not happy with your current one.
The general principle guideline is that you can get at any rate 20% more in the event that you put yourself on the open market tomorrow. Contingent upon execution and industry, after around three years at work in a hot work showcase, you could possibly get half or more.
Faithful representatives will in general miss out the most. Try not to resemble me. I remained at my old business for a long time and presumably surrendered more than $1 million in income thus. The primary positive about faithfulness is that it builds your odds for arranging a succulent severance on the off chance that you ever need to proceed onward.
4) Take a holiday. Given it's at present a worker's market, this is the ideal opportunity to take a long get-away or a holiday. Indeed, it's hard to get off the framework when a lot of cash is to be made. Be that as it may, it might be currently or never as it may be vocation suicide to take a holiday during a downturn. Since when you get back, your activity probably won't be there!
On the off chance that you intend to work for at any rate five additional years, if you don't mind take an all-encompassing get-away or holiday. Cash is working the hardest for you in a positively trending business sector, so don't stress such a great amount over attempting to get considerably more cash-flow.
My greatest mix-up was not taking at any rate a one-month holiday. I was too stressed over my activity during a downturn and needing to profit during a positively trending business sector.
It was a ceaseless cycle since I constantly anticipated that a downturn should be directly around the bend. In any case, on the off chance that I had taken a holiday, I would have been revived and likely expanded my working profession by at any rate a couple more years. This is one of my huge laments as an early retiree.
5) Start deliberately having a great time. On the off chance that you can't have a great time when times are great, you positively won't probably celebrate the good life when times are terrible. At the point when times are awful, you'll need to spare more and take on side hustles. The final product is that you never end up spending any of your cash on enjoy a quality lifestyle.
During a positively trending business sector, you're profiting path past your ordinary anticipated salary (day work, side hustle pay, automated revenue). As it were, buyer advertise cash feels like "free cash" or "clever cash."
You will probably figure how much interesting cash you've made every year from the buyer market and continue to invest some of it on yourself, your family, and your friends and family. You don't need to burn through 100% of your positively trending business sector increases every year. Be that as it may, you should attempt to designate and spend in any event 10% of the interesting cash celebrating the good life.
For instance, in 4Q2018, I was down about $300,000 (15%) in my House Fund portfolio. That hurt. Fortunately, the House Fund portfolio made up the entirety of its misfortunes and after that increased about $200,000 for a $500,000 swing in a half year.
Restoring $300,000 felt like free cash since I had absurdly over-allotted towards tech stocks. Be that as it may, making $200,000 truly felt like free cash. In this manner, I took a bit of the $200,000 and got myself some new clothing. I feel so new! Be that as it may, truly, I made an enormous buy not long ago which I may partake later on.
6) Hunt for unicorns. During a buyer showcase, greater air pockets will in general structure. In the event that you can get an air pocket and ride it before it implodes, you could possibly profit.
I would put aside 10% of your income (not existing ventures) looking for the following incredible theoretical speculation. A theoretical venture is normally a doubtful item, doesn't have positive income, and is something not standard.
You ought to hope to lose 100% of your 10% with the possibility of making a 1,000%+ return. The probability of either happening is most likely little. In any event, you will study putting resources into resources that are regularly neglected.
It's totally fine to put resources into record assets as long as possible. Most by far of your assets ought to be distributed towards an exhausting S&P 500 and bond file. You simply have minimal shot of regularly getting more extravagant quicker than most of the contributing populace.
On the off chance that I hadn't put $3,000 in VCSY in 2000, I wouldn't have had the option to make a $120,000 up front installment for my first SF property in 2003. In the event that I hadn't purchased my first property in 2003, I might not have had the fortitude to bet everything on a solitary family home in SF toward the finish of 2004.
All you need is one chance of a lifetime to supercharge your riches. In any case, so as to get your chance of a lifetime you have to go out on a limb with a portion of your assets.
7) Shop your business around. Valuations will in general be at their most astounding during a positively trending business sector since desires are so high for future profit development. On the off chance that you accept desires are higher than the real world, at that point you ought to forcefully attempt and shop your business around to the most noteworthy bidder.
In any case, to have the option to shop your business around, you should initially have your very own business. Having a business is extraordinary in light of the fact that in addition to the fact that it has an income segment, however it has a value segment also. To make next dimension riches is tied in with developing the value segment.
Despite the fact that the trailing year P/E proportion doesn't look silly yet at 21.9X contrasted with the 14.75X middle numerous, the Shiller P/E proportion is getting up there at 30X contrasted with the 15.75X middle various. The Shiller P/E proportion depends overall expansion balanced profit from the past 10 years.
8) Become a fraud. In a buyer market, capabilities and qualifications are regularly neglected in light of the fact that everyone is getting quite a lot of money. It's simply after individuals begin losing cash that people begin cautiously perusing the fine print and scrutinizing the foundation of the individual.
During the last positively trending business sector, I know one person who composed a book about how to get rich in spite of having as of late moved on from school with barely any cash. He wound up getting rich mostly in light of his book. Splendid!
Today, I am aware of 25-year-olds with zero budgetary foundations who are showing individuals how to put resources into the financial exchange and resign early. It's noteworthy how people are drenching it up.
On the off chance that you've at any point needed to profit as a fraud, right now is an ideal opportunity to exploit. It doesn't make a difference in case you're a bombed political advisor attempting to position yourself as a money related master or an organization author with no appropriate understanding. In the event that you counterfeit it, odds are higher you will make it during a positively trending business sector.

If you’ve been struggling with the betting exchanges and want to know how to really make it like the pro’s do, and send your betting bankroll soaring – then this is definitely the most important letter you will read in your life!
Here’s why:
There was a time in my life when used to work 110 hours a week, I was heavily indebted and paying my mortgage seemed impossible. I was not sure whether I would be able to live a life with self esteem, have a house of my own, be able to propose to my girlfriend; And here I am today living the life I could not have ever dreamed about a few years back.
I work 30 hours a day, drive a BMW, own a big house and have three kids and a lovely wife!
So what changed my life?
It was my passion that kept me going, my passion for betting. Even during my days of struggle I kept aside some money for betting on the betting exchanges. Sometimes I earned some money and sometimes I lost some. I still cherish those bittersweet memories.
At one point, When I was struggling with the exchanges myself it seemed to me like I would never get it right…
I realized I was neither unlucky, nor reckless, I was not winning enough because I did not have a strategy. I was working 3 jobs with shifts so I did not get any time to analyze the odds of different outcomes. I desperately needed someone to do my analysis, calculate the probabilities and keep an eye on external factors that often eluded me.
All the information from the ‘Gurus’ only confused me more and more until I finally decided to call in some professional help so I could focus on the things that really worked, so with a little help from my friend Jonathan over at The Perfect Punter, we put together 10 of the very best systems for making constant profits on the betting exchanges, these systems will work on any of the betting exchanges now and in the future.
We focused on 4 areas because:
1) All the market information needed in these areas is available and easy to find;

Each one focuses on meticulously selected criteria (specific to that area) and their relative weighted probability of affecting the outcome. You must be too eager by now to know what are the betting systems you will receive.
” Here are the betting systems you’ll receive “
1.
Staking Plan — Money Management
There is no point even starting to bet without having an aim. How often have you been up then carried on too long and lost all your profit? Even betting on one extra race can make the difference between a great day’s punting, and an average day.
Instead follow this plan and it will help dramatically!
There is no doubling up involved! Nor any other form of loss replacement, as that is VERY DANGEROUS. Instead it will just show you the most efficient way of betting.
Read it and you will be very pleasantly surprised! This system alone is worth $19.99
2.
UK Horse Racing System No. 1 – Laying False Favourites
There are so many favourites during the day that are way below their true value. There are even more, that should not even be the favourite at all! Follow this very simple 2 step process to identify those favourites that should be taken on.
You will not be laying anything over 4.5 as otherwise exposure is too high. Instead the process shows short priced favourites that must be laid. In the last week alone, the system has produced many odds-on lays, and over the course of the last 7 days has produced a very healthy profit! There is no trading with this, so the lays can be placed early in the day or the night before as well. This system alone is worth $19.99
3.
UK Horse Racing System No. 2 – The nature of the market
(Double system) 2 systems with incredible strike rates! Learn how to use the in-play markets on the exchanges to lay short priced losers. There are 2 systems for this to cover races under 1 mile and over 1 mile. There is No studying of form and you do not need to be watching the race on the TV. They are both really simple to do, but you will be amazed at how accurate the system is! This system alone is worth $29.99
4.
UK Horse Racing System No. 3 – Exploit the Weakness of the Markets
A super simple system that uses the nature of the markets to create an Incredible strike rate! No form at all is needed, you don’t need to watch the race and there is No trading involved. A 2-step process is all it requires. This system alone is worth $24.99
5.
US Horse Racing System No.1
This system addresses a problem that I have noticed when researching the other available systems to buy. There does not seem to be any advice on how to play the US Racing markets on the exchanges, yet these are increasingly becoming more popular markets to bet on. US Racing is really useful as they happen in Europe’s evening/night so meaning that those who work can get involved before going to bed. This system alone is worth $19.99
6.
US Horse Racing System No. 2
The system is simple in its nature, and takes advantage of something I have noticed happening consistently, particularly with the US Racing. It applies to most of their tracks and can be easily identified. Importantly, though you will not need to see a single piece of form, as this can be hard to get for the US races. Instead the instructions in the system supplied will tell you exactly what to do. There is no trading, and as the markets do not go in-play, no stressing over getting out of a position. Instead you either back or lay the selection and your job is done. This system alone is worth $19.99
7.
Greyhound System – Laying false favourites
With more than 100 greyhound races a day, it goes without saying that there are many possibilities for making money from this sport. This system will show you the easiest way of doing this. A simple 2 step process will show you which dogs put up as the favourite are highly likely to lose. Nothing is laid above 4.5 so keeping liability low AND there is no doubling up or anything dangerous. Instead if the lay is wrong, you start again and by following this system the loss should be recovered in no time by keeping level stakes. Then it is on to more profit. This system alone is worth $24.99
8.
Soccer System No. 1 – Back or lay pre-match and walk away.
There are 2 valuable stats that are needed to spot what to do for this system. If found then the rest is easy. These stats appear very often and with soccer games nearly every day of the week there is plenty of possibilities for using this system. This system alone is worth $19.99
9.
Soccer System No. 2 – Trade before and during the game to make a green book.
The soccer markets on are very useful to produce a profit on all 3 outcomes in a match. This system will show you how its done AND you will only be at your computer for a maximum of 20 minutes to do so! This system alone is worth $19.99
10 .
Highly Requested System – Blackjack System
A popular request when I was writing this package, so I have included a system to help make money using exchange Blackjack. The system is simple to understand which is a great feature compared to many similar systems available. This system alone is worth $29.99

The Problem with “Getting Things Done”
I play the piano by ear. It’s something I’ve been doing since the age of 12. I love playing the piano.
And if someone’s singing while I’m playing (i.e. my wife), I’m on cloud 9. Because I’ve been playing for so long, I must say – I’m pretty good at it.
If you come up to me and sing a song, in most cases, I’ll be able to play it immediately. It’s just a part of who I am. God blessed me with musical talent.
But there’s a situation I often find myself in. A fellow pianist hears me play and comes up to me to ask me the name of the chord progression I played at a certain part of the song.
My answer always confounds him – I don’t know.
I can’t tell you the theory of what I’m playing. I don’t know the theory (in most cases). What I know is how to play.
This often leaves them confounded. They understood the theory. In fact, they are often experts. Put sheet music in front of them and they can play it immediately.
But remove the sheet music and they are useless. And their playing often amounts to that of someone with much less skill.
How did I learn to play the piano? By playing the piano. I spent countless hours on a near daily basis playing the piano for years.
And the more I did it, the more the music became a part of who I am.
Understanding theory is powerful because it forms the basis for what we do. Unfortunately, understanding the theory doesn’t always equate with being able to do something well.
The problem with “Getting Things Done” and all of the theory that’s out there is that it’s just theory. How do you get stuff done? It has something to do with how I learned to play the piano by ear.
What to do instead
Over the last few months, I’ve been inspired by the following quote:
“If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don’t bother trying to teach them. Instead, give them a tool, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking” – Buckminster Fuller (Designer, inventor, futurist)
How do you get stuff done?
When I read that, it hit me. THAT’S how I learned to play the piano. The piano was a tool and I used it over and over.
I spent years using the piano, making mistakes and realizing that some of my “mistakes” actually sounded good.
And it didn’t matter how it sounded because I was in the comfort of my own home. And my parents actually encouraged those mistakes.
They would sing out as we sat together during family worship as I stumbled through playing songs on the piano.
But the more I did, the better I got. That’s how it is with getting things done. Here’s what we can learn from my piano playing skills.
Choose a tool that teaches you to get things done, and use it over and over. The more you use it, the better you’ll get at it.
My Get it Done Spreadsheet
I created a tool – Get It Done Spreadsheet – to help you get things done
After buying into Buckminster Fuller’s concept, I decided to create a tool. One to teach you the principles of getting things done.
And while I’ll give you the theory here, that’s only the beginning. Using it on a daily basis will help you to solidify the theory and actually get stuff done.
The core of the spreadsheet comes down to the following seven steps.
Step 1: Take inventory of your work-life balance
One of the problems with how we normally set goals is that they are often project focused. This isn’t inherently a problem.
But what I now realize is that our project-focused goals take flight when they line up with our life goals. For that reason, you should take inventory of where you are in life.
Once you understand where you are in life, it’s easy to see what’s off balance. Once you know what’s off balance, you can more easily see where you need to set goals.
In the Get it Done Spreadsheet, you rate yourself in the following six areas: work/business, finances, spiritual, health and body, relationships with others and personal.
This is done by grading yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 as shown below:
Work Life Questions
After taking this inventory, you will get a picture that looks like this:
Work Life Balance
As you can see in my example, I’m relatively balanced in most areas, but there is room for improvement. But there’s one that stands out.
Finances.
When it comes to things like long-term financial planning, following a budget, etc, I fall short. This tells me that I have some work to do, especially where my finances are concerned.
It also shows me that while the other areas are relatively balanced, there’s room for improvement.
Understanding this will help you with the next step.
Step 2: Write down your goals
Now that you know where you stand, it’s time to come up with your goals. They’ll fall into three categories: short-term (0 to 3 months), medium-term (3 months to 3 years), and long-term (over 3 years).
Here are my short-term goals from when I went through this activity:
Short-term Goals
Notice that you’re including all of the following:
What the goal is.
Why you want to accomplish each goal.
When you want to accomplish it by.
When you actually accomplish it.
These goals should be S.M.A.R.T. goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based).
Step 3: Break down those goals
Determine your goals
Ok, so you have your goals. It’s time to break down these goals. For each goal, answer the following questions:
What is the goal?
What are the benefits of reaching that goal?
What are the pains associated with not reaching the goal?
What resources/knowledge do I need to help me reach the goal?
What are the steps I need to take?
When will I accomplish each goal by?
Dissecting each goal in this way will make you more confident in your ability to accomplish each goal. It will also give you the steps you need to take.
Step 4: Create your weekly and daily plan
This is where the “Get it done” spreadsheet really shine. It’s what you do on a daily (and weekly) basis that sets the stage for success.
Create your weekly and daily plans
Here’s what I recommend. At the beginning of the week, make your plan for the week. This includes a list of the 3 to 5 goals you’re working on that week.
It’s important to keep your goals front and center as you plan out the tasks you will be working on. It also includes the tasks you want to accomplish by the end of the week.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to plan out the tasks you want to accomplish each day as well as a tentative schedule to help you accomplish those tasks.
I’ve gone back and forth on this. When I first started using the spreadsheet, I would do my schedule daily. I figured that my daily tasks would depend heavily on what I did the day before.
But then I found that when I don’t start with a good view of what I want to accomplish for the week, I get less done.
So now I plan out the entire week on Sunday and adjust accordingly as things change.
Step 5: Take massive action daily
Take massive action – Do what you have planned
There’s not much to say here. You’ve done the planning and now it’s time to do what you planned. It’s what you do on a daily basis that will result in the success you’re trying to have.
And now that you’ve planned it all out wisely, make it happen.
It’s important to realize that every day won’t go as planned, and that’s ok. This is one of the reasons I love having my planner as a spreadsheet.
If I need to adjust, I can easily change things around. My paper planner ended up getting really messy as I adjusted.
As you get things done, check them off your to-do list and give yourself a pat on the back.
Step 6: Review each day and week in light of your goals
If all you’re doing is busy work, it’s easy to get lost in the weeds. It’s important to review what you’re doing on a daily and weekly basis.
At the end of your workday, take a few notes on how the day went. Did you accomplish all your goals? Celebrate that. Did something derail you? Take note of that.
Review your goals on a regular basis to reflect on your activity in light of your goals
There are two spaces where you can do this. At the top of the spreadsheet, you can state exactly what you accomplished related to your goals. If you didn’t do anything related to one of your week’s goals, write the word NOTHING. I like to do it in all caps.
When you do that, the cell will automatically turn red to draw your attention to the fact that you didn’t do anything there.
This is not a bad thing. You won’t be working on every goal every day. However, when you see that red repeating itself over and over, it’s time to start paying attention.
The second place is at the bottom of the sheet. This is more of an open area for you to write down your general thoughts about the day.
And at the end of your week, take notes on how your week went. Doing this review is important for getting you to reflect on your activity in light of your goals.
It will also serve as a reminder when you need to go back and figure out where you stand.
Step 7: Recalibrate every quarter
Alright, you’re on your way to actually “getting things done” and it feels great. But it’ll be easy to just keep going without having a good understanding of how far you came.
That’s why I created a spreadsheet for every quarter. Every quarter, go back to the work-life inventory sheet and see where you stand. Is there more balance? Where did you improve? Where did you fall off a little?
Either way, it’s all good. You’re taking action and approaching your goals in a more strategic way. Not only that, you’re learning the principles of success without focusing on learning.
You’re learning by doing.

Smell Our Most Underestimated Sense
We humans do not appreciate our sense of smell. Compared to other senses like vision and hearing, we tend to ignore the information from our sense of smell with the exception of flowers, food being prepared and, of course, those lucky people who have discovered aromatherapy.
But according to a recent documentary, "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," our sense of smell affects us much more than we realize. Certainly, we know that it protects us from dangers like fire because we smell the smoke, explosions because we smell natural gas and food poisoning because we smell spoilage. But few realize our sense of smell also lets us "read" other people much like dogs "read" each other by sniffing.
Of course, the olfactory read that humans conduct is not as obvious as that of dogs sniffing but, according to this film, people will oftentimes sniff their hands after shaking hands with someone new, indicating that important information has been gained. The sense of smell also helps newborns bond with their mothers, and "smell dysfunction" can impair such bonding.
Nevertheless, smell is so underappreciated people interviewed in the documentary said they would rather lose it than their "access to technology," such as their smart phones. If you're inclined to agree, after watching this remarkable documentary, you just might change your mind.
Aromatherapy Takes a Clue From Nature
I am a big believer in aromatherapy, which is based on the use of essential oils, also called volatile oils. In addition to inducing relaxation and sleep, and reducing blood pressure1 and stress, aromatherapy may be beneficial for depression,2 anxiety,3 dementia4 and pain relief.5
According to "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," plants and flowers also use these healing fragrances for themselves! For example, flowers deliberately emit the chemical signals of a female bee so that the male bee will "mate" with the flower and pollinate it. Certain birds, butterflies, bats, moths and even honey possum also pollinate flowers.
The irreplaceable services of these pollinators are seriously threatened by pesticides and chemicals, posing an environmental crisis. It is important to remember that every time you shop for organic food you vote against these harmful chemicals that are creeping into our daily life.
Interestingly, the least pretty flowers are often the most fragrant ones, because they cannot rely on their visual beauty to attract pollinators says the documentary, Moreover, plants can emit odors to warn other plants of impending insect attacks, just as animals warn others about imminent predators.
Sensing Others Through Our Sense of Smell
Many have heard of the phenomenon of menstrual synchrony in which women who live or work together can begin to have their periods at the same time.6 In a T-shirt sniff study, says the documentary, women's testosterone levels changed in response to the scent of another woman, depending on where that woman was in her monthly cycle — though, of course, the women were not consciously aware of this.
Paul Moore, a professor at Bowling Green State University who specializes in chemical ecology and the role chemical signals play in an organism's ecological role, explains the reaction like this:7
"The chemical senses, I call them ninjas — they're hidden. So, they go into our brain, and we're not aware of it, we're not conscious of it, so it makes us respond emotionally, respond physiologically, before we actually think about the response. So, it's very subtle and it's very hidden ...
Testosterone is tied very much to social dominance and in competitiveness and aggression. And up-regulating or down-regulating testosterone through chemical signals could change your competitiveness."
Why would this happen? From an evolutionary standpoint, fertility could be governed by a competition won by dominant females so that less "alpha" females would cease to compete for males at a certain time.
The Hidden Powers of a Handshake
Our sense of smell does not just determine sexual rivals and fertility competition. In one study cited by the documentary, a hidden camera filmed people meeting strangers for the first time and sometimes shaking their hands. Greeters who shook hands smelled their hands afterward twice as often as those who didn't shake hands, presumably accessing the "information" the handshake gleaned.
Shaking hands is likely a human version of dogs sniffing each other — a way of acquiring a lot of social information in one quick impression, says Moore. When dogs sniff each other upon meeting, for example:
"They're sniffing and saying, 'Oh, I played with you last week. You're a good dog to play with,' or 'I smell you from last week. You were a little mean, so I'm not going to play with you.' They're going to pick up their dominant status, social status, their reproductive status, what they've eaten. All that kind of stuff that you and I would share in a conversation with words, they share with chemical signals. Their whole world is sense of smell."
Man's Best Friend Can Save Our Lives
One of the most dramatic facts shared in "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense," is dogs' proven ability to detect cancer in humans from subtle smells in breath, skin and more. Dogs have up to 300 million receptor nerve cells that detect smell (compared to 5 million in humans) and some dogs have been successfully trained to detect human cancers.
In a 2015 study published in the Israel Medical Association Journal,8 two dogs picked out the breast cancer cell cultures that they had been trained to detect 100 percent of the time. These "detective" dogs even picked out cancer specimens they were not trained to detect, but they never picked out control (noncancer) specimens, meaning "false positives," which plague diagnostic methods that are more high-tech than dogs.
The dogs picked out early-stage cancer as well as advanced cancer with amazing accuracy and specificity — a skill that would clearly save lives. In a 2017 study published in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery,9 a trained dog was also able to detect early lung cancer from the exhaled breath of patients with remarkable accuracy. Here is what the researchers wrote:
"After appropriate training, we exposed the dog (a 3-year-old cross-breed between a Labrador retriever and a pitbull) to 390 samples of exhaled gas collected from 113 individuals (85 patients with LC [lung cancer] and 28 controls, which included 11 patients without LC and 17 healthy individuals) for a total of 785 times.
The trained dog recognized LC in exhaled gas with a sensitivity of 0.95, a specificity of 0.98, a positive predictive value of 0.95 and a negative predictive value of 0.98."
Other Cancers Are Being Detected by Dogs
Canine olfactory abilities are also being studied in the screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) which takes the lives of approximately 50,630 Americans per year.10 This is what researchers writing in a 2010 article in BMJ said:11
"Among patients with CRC and controls, the sensitivity of canine scent detection of breath samples compared with conventional diagnosis by colonoscopy was 0.91 and the specificity was 0.99.
The sensitivity of canine scent detection of stool samples was 0.97 and the specificity was 0.99. The accuracy of canine scent detection was high even for early cancer. Canine scent detection was not confounded by current smoking, benign colorectal disease or inflammatory disease."
Such noninvasive and economical methods for early detection of colorectal cancer that avoid colonoscopy are sorely needed. Currently the occult blood test is one of the few affordable tests in the doctors' colorectal cancer arsenal.
Dogs can also detect the specific volatile organic compounds associated with prostate cancer in urine samples with high estimated sensitivity and specificity according to a 2015 study.12
And, in a 2013 study, dogs correctly identified all 42 blood samples of patients with ovarian cancer, achieving an accuracy rate of 100 percent.13 Even more encouraging, the dogs could determine whether cancer cells remained after surgery, which is crucially important since doctors generally cannot determine if residual cancer cells remain.
How Were Dogs' Medical Abilities Discovered?
How did an awareness of such canine abilities and their possible use in medicine develop? Here is how the researchers trace the origins of such dog detections:
"The idea of using a dog's olfactory sense for the early detection of cancer was first raised by Williams and Pembroke and reported in The Lancet in 1989. These authors described the case of a patient who visited the clinic because her dog showed a particular interest in a skin nevus she had. Following its excision, the pathological examination revealed malignant melanoma."
A 2013 case report in BMJ (previously the British Medical Journal) reported a similar phenomenon.14
"Our patient is a 75-year-old man who presented after his pet dog licked persistently at an asymptomatic lesion behind his right ear. Examination revealed a nodular lesion in the postauricular sulcus. Histology confirmed malignant melanoma, which was subsequently excised."
Another Important Function of Our Sense of Smell
Do you like different flavored jelly beans? People tasting them in "Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense" quickly discovered that most of the "taste" was from their sense of smell not their sense of taste. When they were asked to pinch their noses, most tasted nothing.
One subject said he tasted "nothing so far." Another said, the jelly bean had "like, a sweetness, but I don't know the flavor." Once the subjects unpinched their noses they could describe the exact flavor of the jelly bean — which was really a smell. The loss of smell had a profound effect on Anna Barnes, featured in the documentary.
"I had a bad hit to the head, so I was kind of recovering from that. And then about a week afterwards, I thought, 'Hold on, something's not quite right here.' It became very clear to me, when I was well enough to go outside, that I'd lost my smell, because back then, the sewerage was open sewerage.
So, I lost my appetite for the first, I would say, four months. I was kind of retraining myself to remember, 'Oh, no, you have to eat' ...
When I lost my taste, fruit tasted for me, terrible. It's just gross. Fruit just tastes really slimy. It's all about texture ... I also had some early, you know, mix-ups, of accidentally drinking vodka, thinking it was water. And, you know, all the kind of stereotypical things that I guess people worry about."
It is clear that from "reading" other people to determining dangers to our enjoyment of food, our sense of smell is crucial — and certainly more important than our access to technology if we were asked to choose. Just as eye-opening is the ability of man's best friends to use their olfactory natural abilities to detect cancers as accurately as the most high-tech machines.

Smell, Our Most Underestimated Sense
youtube
We humans do not appreciate our sense of smell. Compared to other senses like vision and hearing, we tend to ignore the information from our sense of smell with the exception of flowers, food being prepared and, of course, those lucky people who have discovered aromatherapy.
But according to a recent documentary, “Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense,” our sense of smell affects us much more than we realize. Certainly, we know that it protects us from dangers like fire because we smell the smoke, explosions because we smell natural gas and food poisoning because we smell spoilage. But few realize our sense of smell also lets us “read” other people much like dogs “read” each other by sniffing.
Of course, the olfactory read that humans conduct is not as obvious as that of dogs sniffing but, according to this film, people will oftentimes sniff their hands after shaking hands with someone new, indicating that important information has been gained. The sense of smell also helps newborns bond with their mothers, and “smell dysfunction” can impair such bonding.
Nevertheless, smell is so underappreciated people interviewed in the documentary said they would rather lose it than their “access to technology,” such as their smart phones. If you’re inclined to agree, after watching this remarkable documentary, you just might change your mind.
Aromatherapy Takes a Clue From Nature
I am a big believer in aromatherapy, which is based on the use of essential oils, also called volatile oils. In addition to inducing relaxation and sleep, and reducing blood pressure1 and stress, aromatherapy may be beneficial for depression,2anxiety,3dementia4 and pain relief.5
According to “Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense,” plants and flowers also use these healing fragrances for themselves! For example, flowers deliberately emit the chemical signals of a female bee so that the male bee will “mate” with the flower and pollinate it.
Many have heard of the phenomenon of menstrual synchrony in which women who live or work together can begin to have their periods at the same time.6 In a T-shirt sniff study, says the documentary, women’s testosterone levels changed in response to the scent of another woman, depending on where that woman was in her monthly cycle — though, of course, the women were not consciously aware of this.
Paul Moore, a professor at Bowling Green State University who specializes in chemical ecology and the role chemical signals play in an organism’s ecological role, explains the reaction like this:7
“The chemical senses, I call them ninjas — they’re hidden. So, they go into our brain, and we’re not aware of it, we’re not conscious of it, so it makes us respond emotionally, respond physiologically, before we actually think about the response. So, it’s very subtle and it’s very hidden …
Testosterone is tied very much to social dominance and in competitiveness and aggression. And up-regulating or down-regulating testosterone through chemical signals could change your competitiveness.”
Why would this happen? From an evolutionary standpoint, fertility could be governed by a competition won by dominant females so that less “alpha” females would cease to compete for males at a certain time.
The Hidden Powers of a Handshake
Our sense of smell does not just determine sexual rivals and fertility competition. In one study cited by the documentary, a hidden camera filmed people meeting strangers for the first time and sometimes shaking their hands. Greeters who shook hands smelled their hands afterward twice as often as those who didn’t shake hands, presumably accessing the “information” the handshake gleaned.
Shaking hands is likely a human version of dogs sniffing each other — a way of acquiring a lot of social information in one quick impression, says Moore. When dogs sniff each other upon meeting, for example:
“They’re sniffing and saying, ‘Oh, I played with you last week. You’re a good dog to play with,’ or 'I smell you from last week. You were a little mean, so I’m not going to play with you.’ They’re going to pick up their dominant status, social status, their reproductive status, what they’ve eaten. All that kind of stuff that you and I would share in a conversation with words, they share with chemical signals. Their whole world is sense of smell.”
Man’s Best Friend Can Save Our Lives
One of the most dramatic facts shared in “Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense,” is dogs’ proven ability to detect cancer in humans from subtle smells in breath, skin and more.
These “detective” dogs even picked out cancer specimens they were not trained to detect, but they never picked out control (noncancer) specimens, meaning “false positives,” which plague diagnostic methods that are more high-tech than dogs.
“After appropriate training, we exposed the dog (a 3-year-old cross-breed between a Labrador retriever and a pitbull) to 390 samples of exhaled gas collected from 113 individuals (85 patients with LC [lung cancer] and 28 controls, which included 11 patients without LC and 17 healthy individuals) for a total of 785 times.
The trained dog recognized LC in exhaled gas with a sensitivity of 0.95, a specificity of 0.98, a positive predictive value of 0.95 and a negative predictive value of 0.98.”
Other Cancers Are Being Detected by Dogs
Canine olfactory abilities are also being studied in the screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) which takes the lives of approximately 50,630 Americans per year.10 This is what researchers writing in a 2010 article in BMJ said:11
“Among patients with CRC and controls, the sensitivity of canine scent detection of breath samples compared with conventional diagnosis by colonoscopy was 0.91 and the specificity was 0.99.
The sensitivity of canine scent detection of stool samples was 0.97 and the specificity was 0.99. The accuracy of canine scent detection was high even for early cancer. Canine scent detection was not confounded by current smoking, benign colorectal disease or inflammatory disease.”
Such noninvasive and economical methods for early detection of colorectal cancer that avoid colonoscopy are sorely needed. Currently the occult blood test is one of the few affordable tests in the doctors’ colorectal cancer arsenal.
How Were Dogs’ Medical Abilities Discovered?
How did an awareness of such canine abilities and their possible use in medicine develop? Here is how the researchers trace the origins of such dog detections:
“The idea of using a dog’s olfactory sense for the early detection of cancer was first raised by Williams and Pembroke and reported in The Lancet in 1989. These authors described the case of a patient who visited the clinic because her dog showed a particular interest in a skin nevus she had. Following its excision, the pathological examination revealed malignant melanoma.”
A 2013 case report in BMJ (previously the British Medical Journal) reported a similar phenomenon.14
“Our patient is a 75-year-old man who presented after his pet dog licked persistently at an asymptomatic lesion behind his right ear. Examination revealed a nodular lesion in the postauricular sulcus. Histology confirmed malignant melanoma, which was subsequently excised.”
Another Important Function of Our Sense of Smell
Do you like different flavored jelly beans? People tasting them in “Smell — Our Most Underestimated Sense” quickly discovered that most of the “taste” was from their sense of smell not their sense of taste. When they were asked to pinch their noses, most tasted nothing.
One subject said he tasted “nothing so far.” Another said, the jelly bean had “like, a sweetness, but I don’t know the flavor.” Once the subjects unpinched their noses they could describe the exact flavor of the jelly bean — which was really a smell. The loss of smell had a profound effect on Anna Barnes, featured in the documentary.
“I had a bad hit to the head, so I was kind of recovering from that. And then about a week afterwards, I thought, 'Hold on, something’s not quite right here.’ It became very clear to me, when I was well enough to go outside, that I’d lost my smell, because back then, the sewerage was open sewerage.
So, I lost my appetite for the first, I would say, four months. I was kind of retraining myself to remember, 'Oh, no, you have to eat’ …
When I lost my taste, fruit tasted for me, terrible. It’s just gross. Fruit just tastes really slimy. It’s all about texture … I also had some early, you know, mix-ups, of accidentally drinking vodka, thinking it was water. And, you know, all the kind of stereotypical things that I guess people worry about.”
It is clear that from “reading” other people to determining dangers to our enjoyment of food, our sense of smell is crucial — and certainly more important than our access to technology if we were asked to choose. Just as eye-opening is the ability of man’s best friends to use their olfactory natural abilities to detect cancers as accurately as the most high-tech machines.

A hot US job market is coaxing people in from the sidelines
WASHINGTON — A surprisingly strong burst of job growth over the past year has led many economists to wonder: Where are all the workers coming from?
As recently as last spring, analysts had worried that hiring would slow as the pool of unemployed shrank. Many employers have complained for years that they could no longer find enough people to fill their open jobs.
Turns out they were both wrong.
The pace of hiring in 2018 was the most robust in three years, and for a surprising reason: Many more people have decided to look for work than experts had expected. The influx of those job seekers, if sustained, could help extend an economic expansion that is already the second-longest on record.
The growth in America’s workforce — made up of people either working or looking for work — has helped reverse an alarming consequence of the recession: The exit of millions of Americans from the job market.
For five years after the Great Recession ended in 2009, many Americans gave up on their job hunts. Some suffered from disabilities. Others enrolled in school or stayed home to raise children. Still others were stymied by criminal pasts or failed drug tests. Some just felt discouraged by their job prospects. Because they weren’t actively seeking work, they weren’t even counted as unemployed.
Economists had speculated that millions of these people lacked necessary qualifications or were otherwise deemed undesirable by employers and might not work again. They were thought to be, in economic parlance, “structurally” unemployed. Subsequent hiring wouldn’t necessarily help them.
Yet for the past few years it has. The proportion of Americans ages 25 to 54 who have a job has reached nearly 80 per cent — the same as before the recession. Economists refer to this age group as “prime-age” workers. It excludes older Americans who have retired and younger workers who may be in school.
“The U.S. is a very diverse and dynamic economy and can often surprise us,” said Julia Coronado, chief economist at MacroPolicy Perspectives. “This is a positive surprise. We’re due for one.”
Research released Thursday by Stephanie Aaronson, an economist at the Brookings Institution, and three other economists found that racial minorities and people with less than a college degree tend to benefit most from strong job growth when the unemployment rate is already low.
That it took nearly a decade for the proportion of prime-age Americans who have jobs to reach its pre-recession level shows just how ruinous the Great Recession was. It destroyed 8.7 million jobs. And the recovery that followed was comparatively sluggish.
Still, the unemployment fell steadily, from 10 per cent to 4.1 per cent at the start of 2018. With so few people unemployed, businesses have increasingly begun recruiting more widely, including among people who hadn’t been looking for work.
“Economists were too quick to discount what the economy was capable of going forward,” said Martha Gimbel, research director at job listings site Indeed. “There continues to be more room to draw people into the labour force and get them a job.”
Other factors that have held some people back from seeking work have included the high cost of child care and a lack of paid leave. Research suggests that such costs have held back the workforce participation rate of prime-age U.S. women, a rate that trails those in most other industrialized countries.
Child care costs delayed the return of Valarie Regas of Atlanta to the job market after she gave birth to her second child in 2012. Regas wanted to go back, but most of the jobs she found didn’t pay enough to cover child care. So she remained mostly out of the job market for five more years.
After completing a coding boot camp, Regas was hired last year by a division of the European aerospace giant Airbus. The company initially wanted someone with more experience, she said. But after she pitched them on her enthusiasm and willingness to learn, she was hired as a software programmer.
“Even with the exorbitant cost of child care, I am now bringing home real money,” said Regas, 36.
Many companies are relaxing their education or experience requirements, according to economists and staffing agencies. They are considering more applicants with disabilities. Businesses are expanding their training programs. Some, analysts say, are also looking with a more open mind at people with criminal backgrounds.
Partly as a result, the number of people who either have a job or are looking for one grew 1.6 per cent in 2018, sharply higher than the average annual gain of 0.4 per cent in the first five years after the recession.
The rebound has confounded many experts’ projections. The Federal Reserve has consistently underestimated the likelihood of more people finding jobs. In 2013, its policymakers estimated that “full employment” — the lowest point to which unemployment was thought capable of reaching without sparking higher inflation — would arrive when the unemployment rate was between 5.2 per cent and 5.8 per cent.
Unemployment is now 4 per cent, with little inflation in sight.
And in 2014, the Congressional Budget Office forecast that the proportion of people ages 16 and up either working or looking for work — often called the participation rate — would be just 62.5 per cent by the end of 2017 and would decline thereafter. Instead, the figure reached 63.2 per cent in January, a five-year high.
Though the participation rate remains below its 2000 peak of 67.3 per cent, most of the decline has resulted from aging, economists say. The huge baby boomer generation is retiring en masse.
“The performance of labour force participation over the last really three or four years has been an upside surprise that most people didn’t see coming,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said Wednesday.
“That tells us that there is more room to grow, and that certainly has implications for monetary policy,” Powell said last month.
If more Americans are available to work, it means companies won’t necessarily have to raise pay so fast to hire people, a trend that helps limit inflation. Milder inflation allows the Fed to keep short-term rates comparatively low.
Average pay is still growing more slowly than it did the last time unemployment was this low. Adam Ozimek, an economist at Moody’s Analytics, says this suggests that there is still room for companies to raise pay and perhaps entice even more people into the job market.
Women, it turns out, have returned to the workforce in greater numbers than men have. The proportion of prime-age women in the labour force is now higher than before the recession. And for women ages 25 through 34, participation is at an 18-year peak. The participation rate for prime-age African-American women also exceeds its pre-recession level.
By contrast, prime-age men still lag behind their pre-recession level of participation. But Ernie Tedeschi, an economist at Evercore ISI, says the reasons aren’t as discouraging as they were five years ago.
In 2013, disability or illness accounted for nearly half the decline in prime-age men in the workforce since the recession, according to data compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta .
But unemployment among the disabled fell last year to its lowest point in a decade. The government has also made it harder to obtain Social Security disability benefits. Now, disability or illness accounts for less than 10 per cent of the shortfall.
And men returning to school now account for about a third of the decline in prime-age men in the workforce since the recession. Family responsibilities, mostly the raising of children, make up about a quarter.
As they assess a broader pool of job applicants, some companies are doing more to develop skills. Goodwill Industries has experienced soaring demand for its training programs, which seek to turn people with low skills or criminal backgrounds into job-ready applicants. Goodwill teaches such traditional skills as welding as well as so-called soft skills, which include getting along with workers and taking direction.
Jennifer Taylor, a vice-president of Career Services at Goodwill of North Georgia, says companies are so hungry for workers that in some cases they hire people before they even finish their training. The Atlanta-based Goodwill placed 24,902 people in jobs last year, Taylor said, three times as many as it did five years ago.
“We are seeing vastly more employers that may not have used Goodwill in the past and that are significantly increasing their hiring on the spot,” Taylor said. “They’re struggling to find talent in the open marketplace.”
A survey by Manpower found that 54 per cent of employers invested in training programs in 2018, up from just 20 per cent four years earlier. One-third said they’re adjusting their education and experience requirements, with some no longer requiring a college degree.
Ricardo Madan of TEKsystems, a provider of IT services, says his company is willing to train more of its new hires, rather than just finding already-qualified workers. Last year, the Hanover, Maryland-based company paid for a three-month boot camp for 25 potential employees run by Trilogy Education, a training company, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
It ended up hiring 19 of them.
“We weren’t thinking this way five years ago,” he said. “It’s never been this hard to find people.”
——
This story has been corrected to show that TEKsystems is headquartered in Hanover, Maryland, not Charlotte, North Carolina. It has also been corrected to show that disability or illness accounted for half of the decline of men in the workforce from late 2007 until 2013, and now just 10 per cent of the decline. Previously the story said that half of men outside the workforce in 2013 cited disability or illness and that that figure is now 10 per cent.
The story has also been corrected to show that men in school account for one-third of the decline of men in the workforce, and men taking care of family account for one-quarter of the decline. Previously, the story erroneously said one-third of men outside the workforce are in school and one-quarter taking care of family.

The Guardian BTAG 9 TTBTAG 10 TT ATAG 4 TTall 402 news articles >> Premier League 2016 -1 7 season re-examine: our writers’ most effective and worst
Our scribes take stock after the Premier League season, appointing the most appropriate participate, finest goal, most entertaining match, biggest gripe and much more
Best actor
Daniel Taylor : NGolo Kant. If he was able to retain Cesc Fbregas out of the Chelsea team, he must be some player.
Barney Ronay: Friendly midfield interceptors are the way, but Harry Kane has been the superb single player: top scorer, unit “mens and” with just enough comic-book star quality.
Dominic Fifield : Eden Hazard, liberated by Antonio Contes switching in plan, rendered the cut and thrust which inspired Chelsea to their title success. Given his toils last-place season as he contended with a hip grievance, his resuscitation was eye-catching. Paul Wilson : It perhaps doesnt topic which Chelsea candidate gets the vote, so in the interests of sharing happenings around I am going to go for Csar Azpilicueta. He seems to be able to play in any posture in all the regions of the back way and his consistency and obstinacy are unaffected. Amy Lawrence : If you could bottle the spirit of Kant and marketplace it to football clubs it would be a bestseller. He has an ability to realize others around him better, to make a game plan quicker. The acces he carried his Leicester qualities so easily to Chelsea, to be transformative instantly, deserves all the plaudits. Barry Glendenning : Jordan Pickford. Exclusively in Sunderlands first team because David Moyes was also able to seduce Joe Hart on loan to Wearside, the 23 -year-old attracted off the impressive feat of constructing himself one of the most sought-after young goalkeepers in Europe despite invited to participate in the Premier Leagues worst unit. Even though he prone to the increasingly uncommon gaffe, its hard to collect defects in different aspects of Pickfords overall recreation and its no exaggeration to say that without him, Sunderland might well have been demoted before the sighting of this springs first swallow. David Hytner : Eden Hazard. Back to his very best. Its capability to stimulate the difference when it matters the most markers him out. Scott Murray : Diego Costa obstructed Chelsea going throughout the autumnal odyssey that effectively chose the conference, all the while remain in persona as pantomime provocateur. Homeric. Well miss his entertaining proximity when hes moved.
Jamie Jackson: Dele Alli. Seventeen Premier League purposes at 175 instants per impres for a No10 is top class. At 21, a participate with that shape all upper-class players possess has to get better.
Andy Hunter: Eden Hazard. The champs were not simply a very defensive squad, as a former manager demeanour sour grapes suggested. They were also the most devastating and smart squad in the final third thanks primarily to the Belgium internationals return to form.
Chelseas Eden Hazard has been back to his best this season. Picture: Darren Walsh/ Chelsea FC via Getty Images
Louise Taylor: Sam Clucas, Hull City; runner up, David Luiz, Chelsea. There are other, far more obvious, nominees but placed in the context of Clucass achievement in ascending five calls of the tournament ladder in subsequent seasons it has to be the left-footed midfielder. Impressive since being altered from a wide character to center midfield this word, the intelligence of Clucass delivering tolerates the hallmarks of Glenn Hoddle, who persuaded him not to give up video games before honing his abilities at his football academy in Spain. David Luiz, meanwhile, is lovely to watch and his re-invention in Antonio Contes back three has thoroughly confounded the doubters.
Stuart James: Gylfi Sigurdsson. Directly involved in 22 of Swansea Citys 43 purposes. For a participate to continually create and rating so many objectives in a crew that invested almost the entire season pushing relegation is quite something.
Jacob Steinberg : After last seasons sabbatical, Eden Hazard rediscovered his mojo in thrilling form and obtained the firmnes to go with his outrageous aptitude. NGolo Kant was a worthwhile recipient of the PFA and FWA accolades, but Hazard was Chelseas match-winner on so many occasions.
Paul Doyle: Kasper Schmeichel. While the rest of last-place seasons champs lost their acces, the goalkeeper was the only Leicester player to improve. Yes, there was that 6-1 demolish by Spurs but, taking a broader vistum, Schmeichel was an example to us all in these perturbed times.
Simon Burnton : The brilliant, hard-working, humble and likeable NGolo Kant deserves all the player-of-the-season bestows currently cluttering his mantelpiece. Ed Aarons : NGolo Kant deserves his awards for prevailing two seconds subsequent Premier League title, but Christian Eriksens return to figure coincided with Tottenhams emergence as Chelseas only sincere challengers. Even 13 abets and eight Premier League purposes do not explain the importance of the Denmark international to Mauricio Pochettino. Csar Azpilicueta also deserves a mention.
Sachin Nakrani : Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Iceland international directly contributed to almost half of Swanseas Premier League objectives and, very simply, without him they would have been demoted, standing all the fallout that comes with that, which, it should be remembered, includes people losing their jobs.
Best manager
Daniel Taylor : Antonio Conte. Even Jos Mourinho has stopped temporarily, at least trying to subvert him. How, perhaps, can anyone question what he has done to get Chelsea back on top?
Barney Ronay: Antonio Conte. Hurled together on the hoof a wonderfully well-grooved champion squad, eased John Terry out of the picture without the slightest friction and on accord eras remains the most ridiculously evoked soldier about anything ever.
Dominic Fifield : Antonio Conte. In a league crammed with society managers, he accommodated excellent to the peculiarities of the Premier League and culminated up putting all the other big names to shame.
Paul Wilson : It was going to be Marco Silva until a few days ago, but now Hull are back in the real world after a brief trip to dreamland there seems no detail in seeming past the obvious. Antonio Conte is more difficult to have hoped for a better first season in England. In terms of blow, it says it all that he can now equal Carlo Ancelottis double as well as Jos Mourinhos Premier League evidence of wins in a season.

Antonio Conte: Chelsea’s brand-new Special One? video
Amy Lawrence : Conte. From the very first play of the Premier League campaign where reference is celebrated a late win over West Ham with that zealous touchline feeling, he has managed almost every situation with expert, class and style. In tactical adjustments and human management, raising the best out of characters as different as David Luiz, Diego Costa, Victor Moses and Pedro, he just missed a beat. Barry Glendenning : Antonio Conte. Charming and handsome, with the touchline behaviour of a male who has just had a large few of cherry-red ants plunged down the trousers of his expensive decorator suit, there is little to dislike about Chelseas manager. His switch to a back three in the aftermath of defeat at Arsenal has been acclaimed in some quarters as the greatest managerial masterstroke in the history of football and while that may be be over-egging the pudding quite, the manner in which he steered his team to the deed with a minimum of fuss in a season when one or more of Messrs Klopp, Mourinho and Guardiola were expected to have his set was no aim feat. David Hytner : Antonio Conte. It has been another immensely impressive season for Mauricio Pochettino but Contes has to get better. Took over a Chelsea squad with both problems and, in what has been his first season outside of Italy, moulded them into champions. Scott Murray : Heres a respectful gesture to Arsne Wenger, who in addition to yet another high-pitched conference place and yet another cup final, somehow preserved super-human high levels of glory despite intense provocation from an entitled minority. An extraordinary stunt. His will be much the very best gaze when this story is told 20 years from now.
Jamie Jackson: Antonio Conte. He coached the volatile Costa to 20 league purposes and may win the classic English double in his debut season.
Andy Hunter: Conte is the stand-out alternative , is not simply for prevailing the Premier League title in his first season in English football but for how he responded to potential junctures notably the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal and Januarys stand-off with Costa.
Louise Taylor: Sean Dyche, Burnley. Antonio Conte clearly has a strong action while, despite narrowly failing to keep Hull up, Marco Silva revolved ocean into wine in eastern Yorkshire. Then theres Mauricio Pochettino, whose Tottenham team play marvelous football on about one half the collective compensation legislation of other top six slopes, but continuing Burnley in the Premier League is a significant achievement. Devoted the same relatively limited resources as Dyche, would Jos Mourinho or Pep Guardiola have done anything like as well?
Sean Dyches Burnley have never genuinely been threatened with relegation this season so good has their dwelling flesh been. Image: Lee Smith/ Reuters
Stuart James: Antonio Conte. Tremendously impressive to prevail the entitlement in his first season in English football tactically astute, full of fervour for video games and get the impression that every player, even those not regularly in his starting XI, buys into his work.
Jacob Steinberg : A nod to Sean Dyche for retaining Burnley away from the relegation scrap, but it has to be Conte, who outperformed his adversaries by resurrecting a misfiring, uneven squad with the strength of his motivational tones, tactical acumen and virulent will to win.
Paul Doyle: Sean Dyche. Burnley never looked like going down, which is remarkable.
Simon Burnton : Great as Tottenham have once again been under Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Contes affect at Chelsea has been greater. Ed Aarons : Antonio Conte. The Italian only been able to reach Stamford Bridge a month before Chelseas first game of the season but has emerged as a name win in his first season in English football. The was changed to 3-4-3 has defined Contes success but the former Juventus midfielder has also shown his man-management knowledge in are working with Diego Costas regular tantrums. Sachin Nakrani : Antonio Conte. Winning the deed in your first season in England is a superb achievement, specially when it involves reinvigorating a squad that had been in turmoil during the previous campaign.
Best objective
Daniel Taylor : Olivier Girouds scorpion kick for Arsenal against Crystal Palace. Barney Ronay : Girouds ranging scorpion attack, a lovely move and a incongruous finish, made all the more implausible by the fact he seems to stop mid-scorpion to winch his leg up a little higher, like a extremely potent human trying to moved his lane over a garden fence. Dominic Fifield : Eden Hazard against Arsenal, sprinting away from Laurent Koscielny and holding off Francis Coquelins attempts to fetching him down, then finishing before Shkodran Mustafi could block. Paul Wilson : Sam Allardyce will have been more worried about some unconvincing Crystal Palace defending, but Andy Carrolls overhead kick against Crystal Palace takes some beat for wow ingredient. Not a crew goal, perhaps, but Carroll gave a lot of himself into it.
Amy Lawrence : The Emre Can/ Giroud/ Henrikh Mkhitaryan showpieces lead the way for individualism, but there was something that impressed a chord about Willians goal for Chelsea at Everton in video games that felt so influential for the deed. What a fine crew purpose. The tone of Cesc Fbregass lead and pass for Willian summed up the brio Chelsea rediscovered this season. That was the moment they experienced undeniably like champs again.

How the 2016 -1 7 Premier League title was won by Chelsea video
Barry Glendenning : Gastn Ramrez. Possibly not best available, but almost certainly the only thing in the best interests any Middlesbrough footballer did all season Ramrezs fine solo struggle cast goal-shy Boro on their way to their first dwelling triumph. Picking up the ball inside his own half and encouraged by the strange reluctance of anyone in a Bournemouth shirt to close him down, the Uruguayan embarked on a 70 -yard run down the inside left that climaxed with him unexpectedly cutting inside and slotting home. Buoyed by this rare moment of quality and muse, Middlesbrough went on to win three more Premier League competitions, while their increasingly unpopular summertime signing would go on to tallied exclusively one more destination as his surface sank below the depths. David Hytner : Andy Carroll v Crystal Palace. Nothing has the ability to fetch jaws to the floor more quickly than the thundering scissor kick. Specially when it is carried out by a big man. Scott Murray : Olivier Giroud against Palace. A finish so ludicrous its easy to forget the six-player pitch-long cavort that predated it, exaggerated by a centre-circle back-flick from Giroud himself. English footballs most eye-catching sweep forward since Terry McDermott tallied against Spurs in 1978.
Jamie Jackson: Henrikh Mkhitaryans scorpion kick versus Sunderland on Boxing Day. Zlatan Ibrahimovic pings a cross over from the right and the Armenian gives move a moving back-heeled attack. Delicious.
Andy Hunter: Dimitri Payet, West Ham United v Middlesbrough. Other purposes carried more weight in the framework of the season Emre Can against Watford and Eden Hazards v Arsenal being the most notable instances but based purely on its merits this momentary remember of a better quality the France international could bring to the Premier League had no equals.
Louise Taylor: Robert Snodgrass v Leicester City. The win in a 2-1 sicken opening-day succes against the defending champions for Mike Phelans side. When Wes Morgan could only half-clear Ahmed Elmohamadys inhuman cross, the pellet descended to Snodgrass whose first-time, left hoofed, half-volley arrowed into the bottom corner.
Stuart James: Emre Cans bicycle knock against Watford must take some vanquish. In fairness, Olivier Girouds scorpion kick against Palace is also worthy of a mention.

Jacob Steinberg : Gaston Ramrezs slaloming 70 -yard run against Bournemouth ended with a clever manoeuvre and a cool finish. Sure, Andy Carroll, Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all took the sigh away with those scorpion knocks and bicycle explodes. But in an otherwise gruesome season for Middlesbrough, the fact Ramrezs solo effort was a rare instant of exhilaration represents it all the more precious. Simon Burnton : Olivier Girouds New Years Day scorpion knock wasnt even Januarys goal of the month, and there are a few rival attacks that compare with it, but to my knowledge it is the best of the cluster. It has grown on the scorer as much as it has grown on me: after video games he said he was a bit luck. It was the only occasion I could do. I tried to reached it with a backheel and after it was all about fluke, but by March he was saying: I dont want to large-hearted myself up but goals like mine leave a mark on biography. Andy Carrolls[ overhead kicking] is splendid, but perhaps beings wont recalls that it in two years day. Mine, yes.
Paul Doyle: Wayne Rooney against Stoke. It was a inferno of a acces to grasp a late equaliser, mounted a wonderful record and persuasion Jos Mourinho he had been able to finally jilt an over-the-hill hero.
Ed Aarons : In a season of splendid barrages, Emre Can saved best available for last. His brilliant overhead kicking against Watford left good-for-nothing to opportunity, unlike Olivier Giroud or Henrikh Mkhitaryans scorpion kicks. Sachin Nakrani : Olivier Giroud v Crystal Palace. In a season of remarkable scorpion/ overhead kickings, this one boundaries it because of the slick counter-attack that preceded it and which Giroud was involved in as well as the meridian at which boot encountered ball prior to it looping into the net.
Best competitor
Daniel Taylor : At the risk of reverberating like a affliction, its not easy to think of a stand-out coincide this season. Nothing left home as aroused as, say, ascertaining Monaco in the Champions League. Barney Ronay : Swansea 5-4 Crystal Palace. Messy, wild and desperate at times, but this is basically what the Premier League is for. Dominic Fifield : Bournemouths madcap 4-3 win over Liverpool was entertaining, but Crystal Palaces prevail at Chelsea in April encapsulated everything about the baffling sort of the Premier League at times. Chelsea were superb moving forward, playing wonderfully perceptive and inventive football. Palace represented ruggedly and, somehow, remained them out. Paul Wilson : The one that fastens in the mind is Manchester City 1-3 Chelsea. An eventful and witty recreation, with some dead-eyed finishing by Chelsea to leave Pep Guardiola sighing about Kevin de Bruynes miss for the rest of the season. A significant name pointer at the Etihad too, for the second largest succeeding season following Leicesters statement win in February. Amy Lawrence : Swansea 5-4 Crystal Palace. Lovely, magnificent, beautiful, panicked madness. The better of the Bob Bradley experience. Alan Pardew trying to put on a courageous look. First on Match of the Day for an unanticipated competition. Whats not to like?
Barry Glendenning: Bournemouth 4-3 Liverpool. They dont get much more entertainingthan this white-knuckle rideat the Vitality Stadium.
Leroy Fer tallies during Swanseas rollercoaster 5-4 win over Crystal Palace. Image: Christopher Lee/ Getty Images
David Hytner : Swansea v Crystal Palace. Never knowledge the defending at both ends, this was a classic, loaded with drama, and the vistums after Fernando Llorentes stoppage-time win seemed to shake the Liberty Stadium. Both of the managers, Bob Bradley and Alan Pardew, were sacked within a few months or so. Scott Murray : Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool. It actually wouldnt have taken much for this activity to have ended 5-0, 0-5 or 5-5. One of those.
Jamie Jackson: Burnleys emphatic win over Liverpool at Turf Moor on the seasons second weekend punched a loophole in the entitle assertions of Jrgen Klopps team and intimated Sean Dyches males would live. Those auguries were proved correct.
Andy Hunter: Everton 4-0 Manchester City. Selecting from Premier League coincides accompanied, this raucous afternoon at Goodison Park stands out for many intellects. In Ronald Koemans attentions it was really perfect and a total unit rendition from Everton. It confirmed the arrival of Tom Davies, who tallied his first goal for the golf-club with an delicate microchip over Claudio Bravo at the Gwladys Street end, and accompanied a entry purpose for Ademola Lookman with one of the teenagers first contacts in the Premier League. For Pep Guardiola, nonetheless, it highlighted the defensive and mental debilities at Manchester City, represented the heaviest tournament overcome of his managerial busines and left him acknowledging the entitlement was beyond his team for this season.
Louise Taylor: If this represents watched live, its a difficult one to refute. As north-east correspondent Ive surely examined a few candidates for worst recreation at Sunderland and Middlesbrough and the better ones I covered invariably involved Newcastle United in the Championship. One top-tier recreation does stick in the recall though; Hull 3-3 Crystal Palace in December. A six-goal thriller boasting a bright, mesmerising concert from Palaces Wilfried Zaha.
Stuart James: Swansea City 5-4 Crystal Palace. A nine-goal thriller that was 1-1 with 25 minutes continuing then all blaze let loose. Bob Bradley and Alan Pardew, the respective administrators, went through every emotion departing and, in truth, it wasnt truly surprising that neither person lasted long long in the job. For what its worth, the reporters at video games were also in a awful commonwealth come the end.
Jacob Steinberg : Crystal Palace 0-4 Sunderland. Sunderland were so surprised about scoring four goals in a single half that they didnt win another tournament until they were already relegated. In their defence, Ive only just recovered from the stun as well. Simon Burnton : Liverpools 4-3 triumph at the Emirates on the seasons opening weekend was everything you could expect it to be and more. Good attacking, wonderful purposes from open play-act, a lovely free kick, brilliant being science, humiliating manager-hugging festivities, sunshine, it had the plenty. The only possible reaction was yes satisfy, Ill have nine months more of that. Which, unhappily, neither unit could deliver.
Paul Doyle: Leicester 4-2 Manchester City. Thrilling and at times brilliant, but also ludicrous, outrageous and laughable. A snapshot of this seasons Premier League.
Ed Aarons : Swansea 5-4 Palace. Conducting 4-3 with the game past the 90 -minute mark, Alan Pardew must have seemed pretty good. His crew had just duelled back from 3-1 down with simply 15 times remaining to lead, only to cede the points to Fernando Llorentes double in injury time. Sachin Nakrani : Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool. A high-octane, end-to-end, relentlessly-thrilling encounter only let down by poverty-stricken terminate. A mention, extremely, for Swanseas 5-4 victory over Crystal Palace. A madcap encounter that encountered two objectives in strike time and Alan Pardew panicking the worst.
Best adjudicator
Daniel Taylor : Keith Hackett. I understand his disapprovals of the present harvest and wonder that he must never have made a mistake in his life. Barney Ronay : Clatts. Will be missed, in part for his unintentional humor, when he needles for Sauds. Dominic Fifield : Probably Martin Atkinson or Michael Oliver. Paul Wilson : No idea. They all look the same to me. Gives say Martin Atkinson. Amy Lawrence : Michael Oliver doesnt seem to want to be the starring as much as some. He gives the impression of wanting best available activity possible.
Barry Glendenning : Mike Dean. His no-lookyellow card to Ross Barkley in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park was a happen of beauty.
Referee Mike Deans no-look yellow-bellied poster given to Ross Barkley was a occasion of elegance. Photo: Jason Cairnduff/ Reuters
David Hytner : I dont have strong concerns on the category this season. Id still say Mark Clattenburg is the best. Scott Murray : Adjudicators are lightning rods for impotent resentment, raging paranoia and myopic feeling. Objective praise doesnt come into it, its not what theyre there for.
Jamie Jackson: The video officer what a brave invention. What? They still do not subsist despite everyone else having access to ad nauseam replays?
Andy Hunter: Any nomination will incur the indignation of at the least one club though Anthony Taylor continues to improve so in the interests of harmony tells just say its not Jon Moss.
Louise Taylor: Probably Mark Clattenburg( despite missing the latter part of the season following move to Saudi Arabia .)
Stuart James: Not much to get excited about here. Martin Atkinson, Mark Clattenburg( yes, I realise hes now departed) and Michael Oliver would be in the three best. Oliver, on a good day, gets the nod.
Jacob Steinberg : Michael Oliver gets my referendum, capped by penalise Manchester Uniteds cynical rotational fouling on Hazard in the FA Cup. Simon Burnton : Mark Clattenburg. He sometimes consider this to be he thinks hes best available umpire in the estate, which is unappealing, but that doesnt become him wrong.
Paul Doyle: Mike Dean. The only one aimed at ensuring respect for the shirt-tugging directive with something close to consistency. And engineering will never have foibles as entertaining as his.
Ed Aarons : Mark Clattenburg and Martin Atkinson frequently get the biggest gigs from Uefa and Fifa, but Michael Oliver remains the outstanding ref in the country. Still simply 32, the Ashington official has been in charge of more equals( 31) than anyone else and problem only two red-faced cards. Sachin Nakrani : Unlike 99% of people who watch football in this country, I dont have a strong look on reviewers. They all seem approximately the same and their mistakes, while occasionally astounding, never entice me into reaching for a pitchfork.
Best signing
Daniel Taylor : Mamadou Sakho. People chortled when a January loan signing was nominated for Crystal Palaces actor of the season bestow. But without him Palace would be down. Barney Ronay : Leroy San. What a wonderful mover, what a calm foreman, what a neat young man. Seems to have no real limit to how good he could be. Dominic Fifield : NGolo Kant was key to Leicester Citys startling success in 2016, and just as influential to that of Chelsea in 2017. A blur of energy and interceptions, and at the heart of everything Chelsea have achieved. Paul Wilson : Where would Manchester United be without Zlatan Ibrahimovics contribution? Barely the best evaluate subscribe, and not exactly one for the future either, but until injury impressed he did what “hes been” “ve brought” to do. Amy Lawrence : Hard to argue with Kant for overall impact. Honourable mentions to Mamadou Sakho who made a big difference to Crystal Palaces situation, and Gabriel Jesus for being a great signing who searches bound to reflect more for Manchester City in future. Barry Glendenning : NGolo Kant. David Hytner : David Luiz. Has shown that underneath the mad hair lies an intelligent reader of video games. Has excelled in the middle of a back three. Long go stands beautiful to watch. Scott Murray : Gabriel Jesus, a score-any-sort genius destined to clang in an nonsensical number of destinations. Had he not picked up that injury in February, Manchester City would have given Chelsea a race.
Jamie Jackson: Eric Bailly. Manchester United appear to have filled the Nemanja Vidic-sized gap created by his 2014 deviation. Costing 30 m from Villarreal, the Ivorian is a tough, reigning 23 -year-old who can be a fixture for a decade.
Andy Hunter: Paul Clement. Swansea City were bottom and examining particular for relegation when they appointed their third director of the campaign in January. Astute signals such as Tom Carroll and persuasion a squad to buy into yet another managerial expression facilitated the former Bayern Munich assistant to have an impact that can determine a clubs short-term future.
Louise Taylor: Eric Bailly for Manchester United. At 30 m he wasnt cheap but goodness knows how far United and Mourinho might have settled without Baillys center defensive excellence.
Mamadou Sakho stops Alxis Snchez in his trails. The champion altered Crystal Palace after his loan move from Liverpool. Photograph: Matthew Childs/ Reuters
Stuart James: NGolo Kant “wouldve been” up there, though it was a rather obvious portion of business on Chelseas part, given the Frenchmans wallop at Leicester the season before. With that in subconsciou, and taking it account the size of the cost, Ill go for Victor Wanyama, Tottenhams 11 m recruit from Southampton.
Jacob Steinberg : On the basis that ratify Kant was a no-brainer after last seasons manipulates, one has to admire Chelsea for building the restore of David Luiz a success. Its easy to forget that there were abundance of doubts about the Brazilian when he signed on deadline daylight. Simon Burnton : Crystal Palace acquired six of the 30 competitions they played without Mamadou Sakho in their line-up this season, but five of the eight in which the Liverpool loanee seemed, stopping five clean sheets in the process( counting their 1-0 defeat at Spurs, in which he was forced off after 57 goalless hours and they acknowledged in the 78 th ). No other signing was so transformational. Paul Doyle : Mamadou Sakho. Liverpool outcast, Crystal Palace saviour. Ed Aarons : Hard to argue with NGolo Kant for 30 m, who transferred from one blue title-winning shirt to another with minimum of fuss. Victor Wanyama, 11 m from Southampton, has had almost the same effect for Tottenham, albeit for a third of the price. Sachin Nakrani : Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I was among the people who believed the 35 -year-old, while undeniably talented, would strive in England. Instead he has gone on to become one of best available free deliveries in Premier League history.
Worst bust
Daniel Taylor : Pep Guardiola. Maybe our beliefs were too high but, after all that awaiting, it has been a real regret. Claudio Bravo comes a close second, which probably illustrates the point. Barney Ronay : Claudio Bravo of course, the first goalkeeper Ive ever seen receive an ironic round of applause from his own love for making a save.
Dominic Fifield : Moussa Sissoko has hardly pulled up any trees since becoming Tottenham Hotspurs record signing, which has not come just as much of a surprise to those who watched him regularly at Newcastle United.
Play Video
0:36
Guardiola: Barcelona and Bayern Munich would have sacked me video
Paul Wilson : The soldier who was tired of London. Dimitri Payet was a big letdown at West Ham United. The clubs 2015 -1 6 musician of its first year and inspiration for a stadium mural at least ought to have been able to manage a full season before leaving. Amy Lawrence : Jointly awarded to Manchester United and Arsenal, neither of whom were able to organize a serious challenge for the Premier League title despite banking heavily last-place summertime to apparently boost their push.
Barry Glendenning: Pep Guardiola. Assignment with his most difficult job in management in so far, even by his own admittance the Manchester City manager has come up woefully short.
David Hytner : Simone Zaza. His incongruous disadvantage at the Euros for Italy was simply the prologue. Saw his lend charm at West Ham United cut short after 11 competitions and no goals because, had he played a little bit more, the fraternity would have had to buy him outright. Moved to Valencia in January. Scott Murray : Pep Guardiola reached in England with a big reputation … for being super-surly in news conference. His glorious dislike for daft subjects has at times reflect through this was simply stately but not yet with Fergie or Louis van Gaal levels of consistency. Hes got the press corps sounded, though, if the repeated promote of the subject on the Sunday Supplement is anything to go by. He now needs to go in for the kill.
Jamie Jackson: Claudio Bravo. Pep Guardiola maybe blew Manchester Citys hopes of prevailing anything in his first season when bombing out Joe Hart and paying 14.5 m for the Chilean on 25 August. Bravo in a word? Hapless.
Andy Hunter: Claudio Bravo. There were more expensive mistakes than the Manchester City goalkeeper Tottenhams 30 m outlay on Moussa Sissoko for example but his recruitment was fundamental to how Pep Guardiola foresaw his first season in the Premier League and served only to subvert it. That is not to say it was a mistake to replace Joe Hart, who has toiled at Torino, merely that Bravo was the incorrect selection.
Louise Taylor: Moussa Sissoko, Tottenham Hotspur. Rafael Bentez is rightly proud of urging Spurs to part with 30 m for a midfielder who played a big its participation in Newcastle Uniteds relegation last year and whose Euro 2016 cameos for France flattered to mislead. Surely when HMRC lately attacked St James Park, club staff joked about whether they were investigating the theft of 30m from Spurs.
Stuart James: A few in the concoction here Borja Bastn at Swansea, Jordon Ibe at Bournemouth and Ahmed Musa at Leicester all spring to mind. But Claudio Bravo, Manchester Citys 17 m goalkeeper, is surely the standout candidate. What were you thinking of, Pep?

From Altair to iPad: 35 years of PC piece of the pie Information demonstrates that cell phones and tablets have been received far quicker than PCs.
Back in 2005, we diagrammed 30 years of PC piece of the overall industry to indicate graphically how the business had created, who succeeded and when, and how some notable names inevitably blurred away totally. With the ascent of entire new classes of "PCs"— tablets and cell phones—it merits refreshing every one of the numbers afresh. What's more, when we do as such, we see something astounding: the reception rates for our dearest cell phones completely overwhelm the most recent couple of many years of desktop PC development. Individuals are embracing new innovation speedier than any time in recent memory.
People are actually focused animals. Not exclusively do we contend with each other for cash and power, yet we shape solid fidelities to different tribes. Regardless of whether it's a most loved games group or a picked processing stage, we energetically cheer when they win and feel a punch in our guts when they lose. Organizations know this, and they will trumpet their victories and unobtrusively conceal their disappointments. However, is it any more imperative to need one multi-billion dollar organization to disarm another than it is to pull for one discretionary multi-million dollar competitor? Is it much else besides cheerleading?
Well—there's unquestionably a lot of cheerleading, yet following the ascent of fall of piece of the pie after some time has more genuine uses, as well. Programming engineers need to monitor piece of the overall industry so they can choose where to contribute their assets. Customers may then pick stages in light of programming accessibility. Stages can live—and in some beyond words—piece of the pie. The victories and disappointments of one era of stages influence the following, and at last this affects everybody's computerized lives.
Certain lessons from the past can likewise be connected today, and may even anticipate what's in store.
So what is piece of the pie?
Piece of the pie is commonly characterized as the rate of an organization's item contrasted with the aggregate of all items sold in that classification over a given timeframe. For instance, if Pepsi sold 25 percent of all dark colored carbonated soda pops in the second from last quarter of 2010, it would be said to have a 25 percent piece of the overall industry for that quarter.
This kind of estimation functions admirably in the refreshment business. The item is intrinsically dispensable and moves in piece of the overall industry are little. When you move from carbonated sugar water to the PC business, as previous Apple CEO John Sculley did in 1985, things get significantly more entangled.
Notwithstanding piece of the overall industry, there's the idea of introduced base. For PCs, this would be the proportion of one brand or stage that is as of now being used contrasted with the aggregate number of PCs in presence. This gets a great deal trickier to figure, since PCs are being resigned all the time at uneven interims, and the time they spend being utilized is additionally profoundly factor. Still, it's something critical to consider for PC organizations, particularly on the off chance that they are attempting to break into an officially settled market. It's awesome in the event that you have a 10% piece of the pie in the principal quarter that you offer your new item, yet imagine a scenario where the business has been around for a considerable length of time and incalculable a huge number of a contender's gadgets as of now overwhelm the scene.
Many articles on piece of the overall industry befuddle the two terms. Some write about introduced base utilizing studies of little gatherings of clients, or take a gander at the server logs of a couple of sites, and afterward report this as piece of the overall industry. Neither of these two techniques is particularly exact, and can now and then deliver faulty conclusions. The main dependable approach to quantify piece of the pie is to carefully check up every one of the offers of each item in a solitary quarter (this article will essentially utilize this technique).
The other place where perplexity can reign is in filtering out the locales used to give the information. Organizations with diminishing worldwide offer will frequently indicate nations where their deals are as yet solid, or report just retail deals if their immediate channel isn't working out quite as well. To be reasonable for everybody, the numbers I am utilizing are for overall deals through all channels. All things considered, we should start by coming back to the beginning of the "PC" insurgency.
The PC (Triassic Period)
We have a tendency to overlook that the individualized computing industry, a foundation of the cutting edge world that offers a huge number of units consistently, was to a great extent made by a couple offended geeks in their carports. Built up centralized computer and minicomputer organizations took years even to see the PC. When they at long last entered the market, they had distinctly blended results. The first genuine "PC" was the Altair, designed in 1975 by Ed Roberts. It set up the majority of what came to characterize the business: the desktop frame figure with appended peripherals, an inward extension transport for extra cards, an outsider programming biological community with Microsoft giving the essential UI (which in those days was a BASIC translator), and different traditions and PC fairs where clients and merchants could meet.
Since anybody could enter the market with next to no startup cost, the early years of the PC included a confounding cluster of models. I once took a duplicate of a 1980 issue of Computers and Electronics and tallied over a hundred distinctive incongruent machines promoted inside. This Wild West scene couldn't keep going for long. Most early organizations neglected to make the move from carport to worldwide business.Four champs risen up out of this early time: the Atari 400/800, the Radio Shack TRS-80, the Commodore PET, and the Apple ][. The last was in last place for the initial couple of years, until a cheerful mischance gave it the business' first executioner application: the spreadsheet VisiCalc. The PET soon offered path to the VIC-20 and the immensely mainstream Commodore 64, the principal PC to truly have an effect on the mass market. It would go ahead to offer 22 million units, which would in any case be a respectable number for a solitary new PC display today.
The early market was likewise a great deal more local than it is presently. The Sinclair ZX-80, ZX-81, and later the Spectrum sold well in their local United Kingdom, yet made a littler gouge in the US. So also, the Apple ][ sold in considerably littler numbers in Europe. The UK had its own particular special biological system of PCs, including the well known BBC Micro, marked after the national broadcaster. The youthful industry was shaken to the center when IBM presented its very own Computer in 1981. The IBM PC, Model 5150, wasn't especially amazing at dispatch. It was costly, and keeping in mind that it sported a 16-bit CPU fit for tending to up to 1MB of memory, it was underpowered, had no design abilities out of the case, and had no solid chip. Contrasted with a considerably less expensive and more vivid Commodore 64, it barely appeared like a contender.
Two things changed the destiny of the IBM PC: the IBM mark name and the clones. Incidentally, the PC was anything but difficult to clone for the most part since it was so uncomplicated, and it was uncomplicated on the grounds that it had been hurriedly composed from off-the-rack parts to get the chance to showcase before some other PC producer removed the market from IBM until the end of time. It had no custom chips, only a CPU snared to some RAM and an extension transport that was completely archived so outsiders could make add-on cards. The main exclusive piece was a straightforward chip containing the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) code that began the machine up and advised every one of the parts how to speak with each other. Indeed, even the working framework was off-the-rack, a rushed CP/M clone bought by Microsoft.
Rivalry between the clones brought the cost of the PC down, and add-on cards filled the crevices in usefulness from the first model. The market story from 1981 to 1985 is to a great extent about the PC—and we could call it a solitary market on the grounds that the clones were completely, 100 percent good—gradually taking increasingly piece of the overall industry. Different stages, including the admired Commodore 64, fell off.Apple, Commodore, and Atari responded to this Big Brother foe of IBM and its armed force of clones with another era of 16-bit machines that endlessly exceeded the PC in components. The Macintosh in 1984 brought a mouse and graphical UI to the mass market (albeit introductory deals were moderate). The Atari ST added shading and MIDI sound to the arrangement, and the Amiga in 1985 included 4,096 hues, four-channel stereo tested sound, and pre-emptive multitasking. These components were truly ten years in front of their time.Sadly, for different reasons, these three stages neglected to make a big deal about a gouge in the proceeding with PC surge. Commodore went bankrupt in 1994; Atari was sold to JTS in 1996. While Apple did well in the desktop distributing market, their deals did not stay aware of whatever is left of the business, and the organization was losing billions of dollars by 1997."The PC wars are over. Microsoft won," Steve Jobs said intensely from outcast at NeXT, his new organization a demonstration of that it was so difficult to set up another processing stage. See that he didn't state IBM won, something that everybody was agonizing over in 1984. At this point IBM had officially attempted and neglected to recover the market with its line of marginally more exclusive and harder-to-clone line of PCs (called Personal Systems/2, or PS/2 for short). The main inheritances of those machines that survive today are the little, round PS/2 connectors for consoles and mice that stay on some motherboards. The story from 1997 to 2003 incorporates the wonderful return of Steve Jobs to Apple, the presentation of the iMac and the arrival of OS X, and the NeXT working framework reawakened in new, affable hues. What it does exclude is an expansion in the Macintosh's piece of the overall industry. The diagrams for this period are exhausting: 97 percent PCs, 3 percent Macintoshes.

Data Analysis - Clara Monner
Introduction to my case
- After looking through the codebook for the NESARC study, I have decided than I am interested in alcoholism. I am not sure which variables I will use, so for now I will include all of the relevant variables in my personal codebook.
- While alcoholism is an interesting topic I would like to be deep in the age on peoples first drinking. I would like to study if this age has any relation with having a period of heavy drinking.
Research

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the natural course of DSM-III-R alcohol disorders as a function of age at first alcohol use and to investigate the influence of early use as a risk factor for progression to the development of alcohol disorders, exclusive of the effect of confounding influences. METHOD: Data were obtained from a community sample (N=5,856) of lifetime drinkers participating in the 1990–1991 Mental Health Supplement of the Ontario Health Survey.RESULTS: Survival analyses revealed a rapid progression to alcohol-related harm among those who reported having their first drink at ages 11–14. After 10 years, 13.5% of the subjects who began to drink at ages 11 and 12 met the criteria for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse, and 15.9% had a diagnosis of dependence. Rates for subjects who began to drink at ages 13 and 14 were 13.7% and 9.0%, respectively. In contrast, rates for those who started drinking at ages 19 and older were 2.0% and 1.0%. Unexpectedly, a delay in progression to harm was observed for the youngest drinkers (ages 10 and under). Hazard regression analyses revealed a nonlinear effect of age at first alcohol use, marked by an elevated risk of developing disorders among subjects first using alcohol at ages 11–14. CONCLUSIONS: First use of alcohol at ages 11–14 greatly heightens the risk of progression to the development of alcohol disorders and therefore is a reasonable target for intervention strategies that seek to delay first use as a means of averting problems later in life.

Longitudinal Effects of Age at Onset and First Drinking Situations on Problem Drinking
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe aspects of the first alcohol-use experience, and examine the predictive relations among age of first use, context of alcohol use initiation, and problem drinking with and without controls for psychosocial risk factors. Data were from the Rutgers Health and Human Development Project, a five-wave, prospective study of substance-use behaviors in a community sample. Respondents, who were first interviewed at age 12 (1979–81) and most recently at age 30 or 31 (1999–2000) (N = 371), reported on their first drinking experience, and on a range of known risk factors for alcohol abuse. Most alcohol initiation occurred during a family gathering. Regardless of initiation context, youth who drank at an early age were more likely than youth who initiated later to become problem drinkers, although the risk was relatively greater for the youth who first drank outside a family gathering. Based on multivariate logistic regressions, feeling drunk at initiation was the only onset-related variable significantly associated with problem drinking; other significant risks factors included male gender, delinquency, and family history of alcoholism. Because most initiation occurs at a family gathering, alcoholism prevention research may benefit from examining the role that drinking in family contexts could play with regard to socializing young drinkers to less risky drinking behaviors in adulthood. In particular, further research focusing on the subjective effects experienced by youth when they first drink may be merited.
Conclusions of research
On both studies they are trying to explain if the first alcohol-use experience can explain a problem drinking in the future. They also study others variables like gender, age, family that can affect to the drinking problem later. They both conclude that the age you start drinking affect to the development of alcohol disorders.
My study
- Is the age of when a person started drinking associated with having a period of heaviest drinking?

“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Michael White. Chances are you haven’t heard of me before. But when you finish reading this, you’ll be glad you finally did.”
“Are you determined to make a Part time /Full time living from the betting exchange?
Then you have finally reached the right place to get started on your journey to financial freedom … RIGHT NOW … TODAY… Not tomorrow, Not in 12 months’ time !!” ….NOW!!!
1) All the market information needed in these areas is available and easy to find;
2) Markets are Robust;
3) Markets are Liquid and one can make all the money he wants;
4) All or many of these sports are dealt with, in almost all the betting exchanges in the world

Horse Racing

If someone claims that his betting system exploit the loopholes in exchanges sytem or he is an ex-worker who knows the system inside-out, its time you grab your purse and run in the opposite direction. The exchanges have hired hundreds of people to ensure their system does not have any loopholes.
The only thing that will work is exhaustive study of all the factors that influence the odds. I have relentlessly worked for months to convert my experience, strategies and hunch into a clear set of rules, a fool-proof set of 10 systems.
Can you imagine how satisfying it would be if all of your efforts on the betting exchanges really produced the results you have been struggling for?
Earn consistently through betting exchange winnings, while concentrating on your profession, family or study. I know a guy who paid for his college education through his winnings!
Purchased separately these systems would set you back a total of $229.90. You have to agree that we are practically giving these systems away at only the price of a meal out!

Ask D'Mine: Type 1 Kids and Birthday Parties, How Glucagon Works
Ever wish there was someone to ask all those pressing, confounding, and disconcerting questions about life with diabetes? Someone who really "gets it"? Well, now there is!
If you haven't discovered our diabetes advice column Ask D'Mine yet, now is your chance to jump in! This Saturday series is hosted by veteran type 1, diabetes author and community educator Wil Dubois.
Need help navigating life with diabetes? Email us at [email protected]
Laura from Arizona, type 3, sends us this reach-for-the-Kleenex tale: I have a question about what is the best site for foods for an 8-year-old girl who was just diagnosed last week. I am sorry, I am just so angry! I grew up caring and watching over my father who has had type 1 for 52 years (he is amazing), but when this happened to my little sweetheart niece I about died. She was doing wonderful in this past week, started giving her own injections, guessing her numbers while she checked her blood—just amazing to see.
But she just went to her first birthday party over the weekend and could not eat chips, dips, cake or drink the punch and sodas like all the other kiddos were doing. This is when it all hit her. She has changed, she has to think about what she eats, she has to plan ahead... Her 9th birthday is right around the corner and she told her mom that she does not want to have a party. I need to find a place where we can see the nutrition info; and isn't there some way to make a yummy birthday cake for her?!? I want her to have an amazing birthday, one that she deserves to have. I will be forever grateful for any information you can give me.
Wil@Ask D'Mine answers: Your niece sounds like a trooper-and-a-half! She's a week out of dx and doing her own injections, checking her blood, and thinking about her food. Waaaaaaaaaaaay to go, kiddo! As is often the case, the little persons with diabetes handle this mess better than their families do. (Worst job in the world alert: parent of child with diabetes, especially if you do not already have diabetes yourself.)
So when it comes to our littlest brothers and sisters I don't think anyone will flame me for saying that your first stop should be the Children with Diabetes community. Their food and nutrition section should give you everything you need and more.
As you'll get all the specifics there, I'm going to give you some more global thoughts here. Bear in mind that half the endos out there will be sending me letter bombs after reading this, and that 49% of the mothers of type 1 kiddos will be buying Wil voodoo dolls on eBay... But...
I think your niece should go to parties. And when she's there I think she should eat chips, dips, and cake. I do draw the line at the punch and soda, however. Our kind simply cannot handle liquid sugars. Ever. Well, not recreationally, anyway. As a treatment for low blood sugar it's another thing altogether. Now, back to the chips, dips, and cake. She'll probably need to limit her portions some. She'll need to pack extra insulin, of course. She should have a low-carb breakfast before heading to the party, of course.
In other words, yes, your family needs to take sensible safety precautions, but those medical needs must be balanced with the social needs of the child. Will the party make a train wreck of her blood sugar? Yeah, probably. But how often do these kinds of parties happen? A couple times a year? And how often is a type 1 kiddo's blood sugar a train wreck even when the family does every frickin' thing right? Yeah. About once per week.
I think you just need to take parties in stride. As for her own party, I'm partial to Splenda for making lower-carb yummy birthday cakes. Now remember that at least half the blood sugar impact of the cake is gonna be in the flour. Not much you can do about that, but if you have a cake recipe you like, you can substitute the sugar for Splenda, and drop the blood sugar impact of a slice quite a bit. Splenda has a freaky-looking fake snow consistency in the measuring cup and weighs next to nothing, but it'll work fine and, unlike some other faux sugars, can be used in baking. The cake will have the same flavor and consistency you're used to, it just won't brown quite right. But you're going to cover it with icing anyway, so no one will know. And, of course, you can use Splenda in the icing, too.
So, Laura, no anger. No grief. Your niece is, and will continue to be, the sweetheart she always was. Now, go put on your damn apron, break out the Splenda, and make your niece the yummiest diabetes-friendly cake of all time.
And for the rest of you, today's stock quote for Kimberly-Clark, makers of Kleenex, can be found here.
Ariel from New Mexico, type 3, asks: How long does glucagon take to work? I had read somewhere that it takes 20 minutes! I think if, God forbid, I have to give my four-year-old daughter a shot and she stayed unconscious for 20 minutes I'd die of a heart attack myself!
Wil@Ask D'Mine answers: Wow. What a great question. Glucagon, for those of you who don't know or forgot, is a drug used to intervene in near-death experiences caused by severely low blood sugar. You know, I've carried glucagon with me for years, trained dozens of people (including my own son Rio, right after his 5th birthday) to use it, but never once gave the action time a single thought.
It's instant, right? Well, no. Apparently not.
But before we get into the issue of response time, let's do a quick review. Glucagon is a hormone that causes the liver to release its inventory of sugar. It's the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency drug of last resort for severe hypoglycemia. It's an unstable compound so it must be mixed right before use. Glucagon kits are made by both Eli Lilly under the name of Glucagon Emergency Kit and Novo Nordisk under the name GlucaGen Hypo Kit. As far as I can tell, the only real difference is that Lilly's comes in a red box and the Novo kit comes in an orange box. Both have a prefilled syringe of saline and a vial of glucagon powder. To get it ready to use you must remove the syringe and vial from the case, un-cap the needle, un-cap the vial, inject the saline into the vial, mix it around, then draw it back into the syringe. What could be easier or faster?
Oh wait. Did I forget to mention that this procedure needs to be done by a presumably freaked-out type 3 whose loved one is out cold on the floor from low blood sugar? Right. Glucagon is used when it's too late for glucose tabs, gels, or Skittles. Glucagon is used when lows are so bad the PWD is unresponsive. The procedure above takes less than a minute, but I'd wager it would be one of the longest minutes of a type 3's life.
In fact, I know of one tragic story from the northern part of our state. A panicked mother injected just the saline into her unconscious son. She forgot to do the whole inject, mix, draw thing.
He died.
After I heard about that, I started all my glucagon carrying families on regular fire drills, having them practice with expired kits (minus final injection, of course). The PWDs generally have a great time simulating a low-blood sugar collapse. Oh, speaking of expired, these kits don't last forever and I'd bet that more than half of you are carrying expired ones. Make sure your damn glucagon kit hasn't expired. Go check.
Right now.
I'll wait here for you.
OK, so how long does it take to bring you back from the almost-dead? "One minute" is quoted a lot on the web, but it's false. And I think I know the source of the confusion. The physician prescribing sheet for Lilly's kit also lists another use for glucagon—and you'll love this—as a muscle relaxant for colon exams.
Yes. You always suspected that diabetes would f - - What? Oh. Well, my PG-13 rating won't allow me to clearly spell out what I'm thinking, but I'm sure you can figure out what I'd say next if I could.
Anyway, when injected intravenously, the onset of glucagon as a muscle relaxant is one minute. But nowhere in the scientific literature could I find anything close to a one minute action time for revival from a bad hypo. I think someone, somewhere along the line, saw the colon exam chart, didn't read carefully, and put the one minute time on the web. Since then it's just been repeated again and again. Copy, paste. Copy, paste. Copy, paste.
This is why you should never believe anything you read on the web.
Oh. Except here at DiabetesMine, of course.
In point of fact, the two pharma companies that make glucagon are vague about the action time for hypo revival. The sheet for docs from Lilly says, "An unconscious patient will usually awaken within 15 minutes following the glucagon injection."
Ah.
Usually awaken.
Within 15 minutes.
How comforting.
Novo's glucagon page states their product works "within about 10 minutes."
Ah.
Within about.
Very precise.
So is the Novo product five minutes faster, or is this just marketing BS? I'd still put my money on the only difference between the two being the color of the case.
More fun glucagon tips: Glucagon makes most people puke. So after you stab your loved one, roll them on their side (for complex anatomical reasons, the left side is preferred), so that they don't choke when they throw up. Oh. Unless your diabetic loved one has collapsed on an expensive oriental rug in which case the procedure is stab, drag, roll.
Then call 911. Severe lows, like earthquakes, can have aftershocks. If you just emptied your liver of sugar, you have no more reserves. A second bad low could be a one-way trip to the great beyond, so glucagon use requires a visit to the ER until things stabilize.
Oh, and according to the info sheet in the kits, if your PWD is still out cold after 15 minutes, you can give a second shot. For kids, a kit holds enough for two shots. For adults, you are out of luck unless someone has a second kit handy.
Some people worry about what if? What if the PWD is lights-out because their blood sugar is too high rather than too low? The official advice is to give the shot anyway. Highs take quite a bit of time to kill you. Hours. Severe lows can kill your pretty damn quick. Minutes count.
Where to inject? Several training manuals for school-based personnel are advocating injecting into fat, just like insulin, but the microfilm-sized instructions from both pharma companies advocate straight into muscle of the arm, butt, or thigh. Would that hurt? Hell yeah.
But don't worry, type 3s. If you've broken out the glucagon we're unconscious anyway.
We'll forgive you an achy butt for saving our asses.
This is not a medical advice column. We are PWDs freely and openly sharing the wisdom of our collected experiences — our been-there-done-that knowledge from the trenches. But we are not MDs, RNs, NPs, PAs, CDEs, or partridges in pear trees. Bottom line: we are only a small part of your total prescription. You still need the professional advice, treatment, and care of a licensed medical professional.
