I remember the phrase "sound it out" from school, and I vaguely remember learning something about long & short vowels or such and to (on Between the Lions) but I don't think I ever understood that or paid it any thought since there were so many exceptions. of course, that doesn't mean it didn't do me any good, just that I didn't consciously recognize that it did (perhaps explaining what non-phonic approaches to teaching reading could be contemplated to begin with?)
One non-phonic approach to reading instruction is based on the belief that reading is a process of integration of syntactic, semantic, and graphic (i.e. whole word shape) cues -- in other words, a series of context-based guesses. This model has no allowance at all for the fact that spelling isn’t completely irregular -- as far as it’s concerned, the English alphabet may as well be a logography!
The paper that originally laid out this model (doi:10.1080/19388076709556976) can speak for itself:
Simply stated, the common sense notion I seek here to refute is this: “Reading is a precise process. It involves exact, detailed, sequential perception and identification of letters, words, spelling patterns and larger language units.”
In phonic centered approaches to reading, the preoccupation is with precise letter identification. In word centered approaches, the focus is on word identification. Known words are sight words, precisely named in any setting.
This is not to say that those who have worked diligently in the field of reading are not aware that reading is more than precise, sequential identification. But, the common sense notion, though not adequate, continues to permeate thinking about reading.
Spache presents a word version of this common sense view: “Thus, in its simplest form, reading may be considered a series of word perceptions.”
The teacher's manual of the Lippincott Basic Reading incorporates a letter by letter variant in the justification of its reading approach: “In short, following this program the child learns from the beginning to see words exactly as the most skillful readers see them . . . as whole images of complete words with all their letters.” In place of this misconception, I offer this: “Reading is a selective process. It involves partial use of available minimal language cues selected from perceptual input on the basis of the reader's expectation. As this partial information is processed, tentative decisions are made to be confirmed, rejected or refined as reading progresses.” More simply stated, reading is a psycholinguistic guessing game. It involves an interaction between thought and language. Efficient reading does not result from precise perception and identification of all elements, but from skill in selecting the fewest, most productive cues necessary to produce guesses which are right the first time.
The argument in favor of this position is... a handful of case studies of reading errors made by young children! (And some Chomskyist stuff that I don’t care to work through.) And Ken Goodman, the author of the paper quoted above and one of the major proponents of ‘whole-language theory’, had some studies to back this up:
In a study conducted by Goodman (1965), students in grades 1-3 first read lists of words. Then the children were presented the same words to read in meaningful text. The students made many more errors when they read the words out of context (i.e., when the words were in lists) than they did when the words were read in context. This, of course, is consistent with the hypothesis that reading will be facilitated when semantic-contextual and syntactic-contextual cues are present (i.e., when words are read as part of a text) compared to when words are read devoid of context cues (i.e., when words are read on lists). This finding has been used repeatedly to defend the meaning-emphasis practice of teaching students to recognize words by analyzing syntactic, graphemic-phonemic, and especially semantic cues.
Nicholson (1991) detected several very serious shortcomings in the Goodman (1965) study, however. First, no attention was paid in the Goodman (1965) investigation of the patterns of performance by good and poor readers. In addition, the participants always read the lists followed by reading of the words in context, and thus there was the possibility that the improved performance in moving from list reading to reading in context might reflect some type of practice effect (i.e., the words in context had been seen before, on the lists).
In Nicholson (1991), students once again were asked to process words in lists and in context. In this study, however, the list-context order was manipulated such that some participants read the lists first and others read the words in context first. Moreover, the study included systematic analysis of reading as a function of the grade of participants and their reading abilities relative to other students (i.e., good, average, weak). The outcomes in this study were anything but consistent with Goodman's (1965) results:
- Some readers did benefit from reading the words in the sentence context -- namely, poor readers at each age level and average 6- and 7-year-olds. - In context, a positive effect on reading was obtained in sentence context for good 6-year-old readers and average 8-year-olds only when reading words in sentence contexts followed reading words in lists, consistent with the practice effect explanation of the original Goodman (1965) finding. - There was no positive effect derived from reading words in context for good 7- and 8-year-old readers. Indeed, when the 8-year-old good readers did sentence-context reading first, they did better on reading of the words in list format.
Oops!
In very simple terms: how do you prompt a student who’s struggling with a word -- “Sound it out!” or “Context clues!” (The teachers I had always said clues instead of cues; I don’t know if that was because children would be more likely to know the former word or if someone misread it somewhere in the chain of transmission.) And there are a few problems with that:
- No attention is paid to the process of encoding. Even if treating words as logograms whose readings are to be inferred from context works to teach children to read (it doesn’t), how are they supposed to learn to write? (At the height of whole-language theory’s influence, some states banned public schools from buying spelling books.)
- What happens if you hit a proper noun? Take the following sentence: “Notably, Ross' classification does not support the ☃☃☃☃ of the Tsouic languages, instead considering the Southern Tsouic languages of Kanakanavu and Saaroa to be a separate branch.” Context cues let you extract meaning from this sentence without knowing the reading of ☃☃☃☃, but if you have to read it aloud and you can’t sound things out, you’ll hit “Kanakanavu” and produce garble. (You might still be wrong even if you can sound it out, because stress is unwritten and English words aren’t marked for which rule-set to use -- consider the words alveolar and maraschino -- but there’s a difference between being wrong and producing garble. Garble will probably accurately represent the cues, including the vague, impressionistic shape of the word, but a stress or rule-set error will at least convey the spelling. Buegehti for Buttigieg is a good example of garble -- you have the word-shape cues (starts with Bu, most of the letters are there) and the semantic cues (weird surname from the periphery of Europe; I assume Buegehti is pseudo-Finnish), but it’s not even close, and probably unrecoverable without context. (So contextual information isn’t totally useless.)
- Even if the relevant actors were willing to accept lack of attention to spelling and inability to decode phonetic information that context won’t help you with in order to get gains in reading ability... there are no gains.
But, as things do, whole-language theory got a lot wackier from there. Its proponents started referencing Chomsky’s language instinct to posit a reading instinct, which, the theory went, would lead children to automatically acquire reading with no instruction necessary (except highly technical facilitation was still considered necessary, because if schoolteachers aren’t essential, what’s the point?); claiming that phonics actually impeded literacy; attacking opponents of their theory as part of a far-right conspiracy to suppress teachers’ freedom and destroy public education; calling whole-language education a ‘revolution’ that would lead to true liberation and model the egalitarian society of the future; and so on.
For example, Shafer 1998:
Over the years, various writers, politicians, and media sources have taken aim at whole language, vilifying its motives and misrepresenting its goals. While many of the attacks have come from a lamentable ignorance on the part of T.V. reporters and talk show hosts, evidence exists that a portion of it has been carefully orchestrated by conservatives who clearly seem threatened by the implications of a whole language curriculum. Indeed, the list of writers who have opposed whole language initiatives reads like a who's who of conservative pundits. William Bennett, Phyllis Schlafly, Cal Thomas, and Chester Finn have all written articles deriding whole language, despite its overwhelming acceptance among academic organizations and respected scholars.
Many theories have been offered as to why whole language has become so partisan and acrimonious - and why conservatives in particular seem threatened by its humanistic objectives. What seems glaringly clear, in the end, is that whole language - with its caveat for student liberation and control - scares people who want to maintain a hierarchical, top-down approach to learning. The threat of whole language, at least from my perspective, lies in its bold challenge to traditional icons and time-honored practices. Some teachers feel intimidated by the notion that their way is not the only way - that their favorite authors shouldn't be their students' favorite authors.
When students cease to be receptacles of information and begin generating their own ideas, they occasionally formulate theories that are disconcerting to those who want to maintain "authority" in the classroom. Thus, the recent controversy over teaching a literary canon and classes in western civilization helps illustrate the result of whole language - where students question rather than absorb - and where learning comes to be a very personal, reflective activity. "To study," argues Paulo Freire, "is not to consume ideas, but to create and recreate them" (4).
(On the same page: “It seems clear that people learn best when they are progressing from whole to part so that they understand the importance of correctness and the viability of certain non-standard dialects in certain settings.” First, what the fuck is this supposed to mean? And second, I can’t see something like “progressing from whole to part” without having flashbacks to the polemics against Hegel from one of my philosophy professors -- the direction of progression and the concomitant assignment of more basic status to that which one progresses from, he said, was what distinguished Hegelian from analytic philosophy, and the Hegelian progression from whole to part underlay all the most prominent horrors of the 20th century. It was hard enough to quibble with that then, but it gets harder every time I see someone try to shore up nonsense with that ‘Hegelian’ formula.)
Edelsky 1993 (doi:10.2307/3587486):
Whole language (WL) is, first of all, a perspective-in-practice, anchored in a vision of an equitable, democratic, diverse society. A WL perspective highlights theoretical and philosophical notions about language and language learning, knowledge, and reality. In a WL perspective, language is an exquisite human tool for making (not finding) meaning. The WL view is that what people learn when they learn a language is not separate parts (words, sounds, sentences) but a supersystem of social practices whose conventions and systematicity both constrain and liberate. And the way people acquire that system or are acquired by it (Gee, 1990) is not through doing exercises so that they can really use it later but rather by actually using it as best they can with others who are using it with them, showing them how it works and what it is for (Smith, 1981). ...
Appropriating the label, the jargon, or the typical materials and activities of WL without taking on the liberatory (and therefore status-quo-disrupting) political vision, and without adopting a WL theoretical perspective, is a sure way to prevent genuine change.
And from the sewer of journalism, Metcalf 2002:
Why the infatuation with testing? For its most conservative enthusiasts, testing makes sense as a lone solution to school failure because, they insist, adequate resources are already in place, and only the threat of exposure and censure is necessary for schools to succeed. Moreover, among those who style themselves "compassionate conservatives," education has become a sentimental and, all things considered, cheap way to talk about equalizing opportunity without committing to substantial income redistribution. Liberal faddishness, not chronic underfunding of poorer schools or child poverty itself, is blamed for underachievement: "Child-centered" education, "progressive" education or "whole language"--each has been singled out as a social menace that can be vanquished only by applying a more rational, results-oriented and business-minded approach to public education. ...
Why is the same conservative constituency that loves testing even more moonstruck by phonics? For starters, phonics is traditional and rote--the pupil begins by sounding out letters, then works through vocabulary drills, then short passages using the learned vocabulary. Furthermore, to teach phonics you need a textbook and usually a series of items--worksheets, tests, teacher's editions--that constitute an elaborate purchase for a school district and a profitable product line for a publisher. In addition, heavily scripted phonics programs are routinely marketed as compensation for bad teachers. (What's not mentioned is that they often repel, and even drive out, good teachers.) Finally, as Gerald Coles, author of Reading Lessons: The Debate Over Literacy, points out, "Phonics is a way of thinking about illiteracy that doesn't involve thinking about larger social injustices. To cure illiteracy, presumably all children need is a new set of textbooks."
Whole-language theory isn’t as popular now as it used to be. But the underlying Lysenkoist tendency has taken strong root in L2 education, which is why most of the people in my second-year German class couldn’t properly decline the definite article.
Sometimes you just have to drill.

Hi! I know you’ve touched on the topic briefly before, but if you don’t mind I’d love to hear any more in-depth thoughts you have on autistic Elliot. It’s one of my favorite headcanons and it’s always fascinating to see other people’s thoughts on it! (Also I just wanted to say that you have a really interesting way of analyzing the show and you seem like a such a genuinely chill, kind person, thank you for being awesome)
heya, i don’t mind at all!! this headcanon is great and there’s a lot of material to work with and analyze so i’m absolutely on board with elaborating more;
but first i gotta establish a few things:
i am not a professional and can’t talk about autism the same way i’ve talked about body language or dissociative identity disorder. mainly because i’ve done essays on the latter and am more educated on the subject, unlike with this specific disorder.
but yo that doesn’t mean i don’t know anything cause psychology is my sHit- i just felt it was necessary for you to know that i’m not as confident in my analysis as i usually am; so feel free to correct me!!
next, in canon, elliot is diagnosed with clinical depression and social anxiety disorder. with a couple of ’delusional’ mentions thrown here and there. however, we most certainly know he suffers from DID as well- and the fact it’s his MAJOR problem and hasn’t been properly acknowledged by the show leaves us with room to speculate.
and finally- i’ve been diagnosed with and am being treated for clinical depression and anxiety disorder. so i will point things out from my perspective here as well, since people with anxiety have similar symptoms to people on the spectrum and/or people with ADHD/ADD. (sometimes even OCD)
alright now that that’s all clear we can finally start looking at his behavior!!
first and foremost, autism & ad(h)d are developmental disorders because the symptoms for them can generally be noticed in early childhood; as opposed to anxiety which is a mental illness. so it’s entirely possible to have a cocktail of disorders in your head.
i’m bringing ADD up a lot because i’ve been speculated to have it & am supposed to take some tests- but am not officially diagnosed yet. now that we’ve got my entire family history, blood type & credit card number laid out, we’re ready to go.
anyway, these are the symptoms:
1. difficulty with communication & interaction with others
this is probably where anxiety, add and autism collide the most. though in very different ways- and they’re not exclusive to people with one of these diagnosis only.
for example, eye contact. i’m terrible at it. people with autism & anxiety are also pretty darn bad at it, and elliot might seem that way at times; he hides a lot- but not as often as he tends to hold an intense eye contact, instead? which can also be seen as an ‘odd’ thing to do in social communication. as in, not noticing if someone’s uncomfortable under such gaze, let’s say.
that brings me to the next topic which is uh, coincidentally, communication.
he is quite blunt when it comes to it, has a distinctive ‘flat’ #elliotvoice tone. @mototwinkclub pointed out a few instances last time this topic was brought up, such as saying “i’m okay with it being awkward between us” to matpat ollie or “not at all, actually.” with gideon- and he doesn’t do it to be rude. doesn’t really realize it’s ‘bad’ to say it like that, either.
i mean i know he said he’s trying to work on his social anxiety but that’s not quite how you’d go about it? i firmly believe he suffers from generalized anxiety. obviously, that includes social anxiety as well; but this way you could explain why he’s way more concerned with…everything else. and is pretty straightforward in conversation.
since i referenced the pilot, one of the first lines he says about himself is “i don’t know how to talk to people. the only person person i could talk to was my dad- but he died.” which brings us back to the developmental aspect of this disorder. since he’s indicating he didn’t know how to talk to people even when he was a kid. which is true, in every flashback we see he either doesn’t talk at all or talks very little.
what’s interesting though- although he’s bad at reading 'conversation’- he’s extremely good at reading people. and the fact he 'looks for the worst in them’ contradicts the usual aspect that’s brought up when it comes to an autistic thought process, which is made out to be like “if i wouldn’t do this, then why would anyone else?” and it’s not the way he thinks at all.
instead, he feels empathy on a moral level if that makes sense? people on the spectrum are said to either be too empathic or not at all. and it’s hard to pinpoint elliot? because, clearly, he cares for people as much as he doesn’t trust them. use an example the reason he leaked ray’s information. he literally said “but then i keep thinking about those people.” but we haven’t seen him empathize with, for instance, vera- even when he gave a pretty tragic backstory. he can tell who the bad guy is.
when it comes to spacing out, he does it all the time. people on the spectrum do it all the time, i certainly do it all the time. but we have to focus on what he is thinking about when he does it- because that is our indicator.
we usually see his thoughts filled with paranoia, over-thinking, analyzing, etc,.. which i associate with anxiety disorder mostly? but, we have to take into account something he suffers from the most and it’s dissociative identity disorder. so not only does he space out, but he tends to dissociate, as well. perfect example for this is when he mutes the world around him. or just doesn’t listen.
once again, from the pilot, when angela tells him “stop thinking about something else while i’m talking to you!!” he isn’t actually daydreaming or spacing out in the usual sense- he’s recalling the night (mostly for the viewer than for himself let’s be honest) she’s talking about and we see that he was too anxious to go in. he doesn’t tell her that.
now let’s talk about his no-touch policy for a second. that’s something a lot of people on the spectrum have in common. i think it’s, once again, one of those cases where one could be either completely touch-starved or aversive. though we can’t ignore the fact he’d been abused when he was young.
as i was going through the pilot for most of my evidence here (as you can notice) there’s a very small detail at the beginning when ron leans in to ask “are you blackmailing me!?” and we can see elliot flinch in genuine fear. this is not the only instance where he seems afraid to get hit. breaKs my goddamn heart.
but he’s also the one to initiate contact sometimes- and he often misunderstands the situation. shayla told him not to ask, he kissed darlene, tried kissing angela on the train that time when she denied him- he does it cause that’s what he thinks he should do.
2. restrictive or repetitve behaviors
he’s absolutely all about those routines- he doesn’t want anything destructing his ’perfectly constructed loop’ anytime he has one. (season 1 starbucks, season 2 jailtime, season 3 ecorp) but it’s important to point out that in all of these scenarios, he’s been to one to break the loop himself. by realizing they weren’t making anything better.
there are a couple of nervous ticks he has, general fidgeting with his hands/hair/hoodie- all of these apply to every disorder we’ve mentioned here.
comfort item/food is a very good one!! since we’ve only ever seen him eat fries, he has a “crying corner” in his room, he’s constantly 'hiding’ under the hoodie. probably the main comfort item.
he’s also insanely hyperfocused on technology and numbers and hacking, obviously- he has a clear routine every time. burn the disc, delete the folder, write a song over one of the cds, shove them under the table. same goes for when he thinks he’s fucked up- throw stuff in the microwave, destroy it, you get the image.
speaking of those cds though, if he can remember exactly which song he wrote for each person he’s got data on; that could be a damn good indicator of it!!
all of this could be a combination of whys and becauses which is super fun if you ask me. elliot is complex and, although i share 2.5 disorders with him, i can’t relate to his actions/coping/thoughs completely all the time.
it just tells you how different everyone’s brains are, you can’t restrict a disorder to a specific pattern and only consider that when diagnosing somebody.
so, in conclusion, elliot could very possibly be autistic!!

Take My Place, part III
Pairing/s : Staci Pratt x OC Deputy Lila O’Cain, Jacob Seed x Deputy Lila O’Cain.
Warning : mentions of alcohol and drugs.
A/n : I’m actually pretty proud of that chapter... I hope you guys will like it too. :3
Tumblr media
Five days.
Lila had been stuck at the Veteran Center for five days. Thankfully, she had been able to eat something else than raw meat and Jacob had given her a canteen she was allowed to fill with water almost every day. She was alright... But she was seriously starting to miss her friends. Every night, when she laid down on the dirty cot in the corner of Jacob’s office, she thought about the couch she use to crash on at Nick and Kim’s place. It wasn’t the best couch, but it was all she wanted. She also thought about her room at her dad’s house, her house... But that memory was too painful and she pushed it aside.
Suddenly, movement in the darkness made her stand up. The office’s lights were off, but the moonlight bathing the room allowed Lila to notice the man sitting at the main desk.
Jacob.
He wasn’t working. He wasn’t asleep either... He was just... Here, sitting at his desk with his head hidden in the palms of his hands. His breathing was heavy, shaky. For a second, Lila thought he was crying. When he straightened up again, she noticed he wasn’t... But he certainly didn’t look good.
She shyly stood up and walked towards him, unsure of how to act. When she saw the whiskey bottle on the desk, it motivated her to move closer. Jacob didn’t even flinch when he noticed her. She sat down in the chair next to him. Tiredness and her sober state -which she wasn’t used to- made her reckless ; she grabbed the bottle and took a long and painful sip. It made Jacob chuckle.
“Easy there, pup.”
“You took all my weed and I’ve been sober for almost a week,” she explained in a hushed tone, taking another sip. With her almost empty stomach, the alcohol was already starting to affect her and she relaxed in the chair. Another dry chuckle escaped Jacob’s throat and he took a sip of the bottle too.
“It’s for your own good.”
“Bullshit,” she grumbled, “Since when do you care about my well being ?” Her voice was low but sharp, real pain coating her words.
“I’m trying to educate you, pup.”
“Fuck you.”
She hadn’t thought this out, the words leaving her lips without her even noticing. Maybe it was the alcohol already clouding her mind, or maybe it was her heart breaking piece by piece and day by day. She looked away, scared. She was weak and Jacob wasn’t. He could’ve easily killed her with a simple punch... But he didn’t. When she looked back at him, he was handing her the whiskey bottle.
“Y’know what ? Wait here.”
When he stood up, Lila noticed he was more drunk than he seemed. He almost tripped over the doorstep. And, without another word, he left the room.
———
During the last five days, Staci has been working alongside Eli Palmer and Nick Rye. Eli had been really welcoming and he hadn’t doubt Staci for even a minute. Even if Pratt was still feeling guilty, Eli had done his best to reassure him. The teenager working with him -Wheaty, was it ?- had done the same thing. Staci and him shared a room and, at night, when Staci couldn’t even close his eyes without crying, he would tell him about the things Lila did before rescuing him. How she blew up some of Jacob’s wolf beacons and so on... It made his heart ache but, somehow, he was actually able to sleep after the tales of the hero Deputy.
“I called more people ; they all agreed to help,” informed Eli who had just walked in the common area of the Wolf’s Den.
Staci straightened up. He couldn’t wait here anymore, he wanted to save her so badly. “So when are we doing it ? Tomorrow ?”
“You know we can’t do anything unless he does. Ball’s in his court ; we have to wait.”
“Bullshit,” Staci almost screamed in response, his heartbeat getting faster and tears threatening to roll down his cheeks. “What if he never tries anything, hm ? What if all he wanted was to fuckin’ capture her and now he won’t try anything at all...?”
Eli heard the heartbreak in Staci’s voice and sighed softly. He walked towards him and put both his hands on his shoulders, trying to calm him down. He knew how Jacob could break people... He’d seen it many times.
“Pratt. We’ll get her out, I promise.”
Staci sighed as well, his heart heavy.
“I know. We will.”
———
Jacob came back about 10 minutes later and found Lila still at his desk... Only the bottle of whiskey was now empty. He sighed but didn’t say anything, sitting on the chair next to her again. His heavy fist landed on the table in a loud thud, a little plastic bag in his palm.
“Here. Roll one.”
Lila’s jaw dropped. She looked at Jacob, sure this was a trap. He sniffed and his eyes pierced right through her.
“You drank all the whiskey and I need something to get my mind off of things,” he explained in a hushed and surprisingly soft tone. “Now, roll one.”
Lila obeyed, doing her best not to fuck things up. She was still wearing her old and dirty clothes and the office was freezing ; her hands trembled when she first tried to roll the joint. Jacob sighed and, without a word, took of his army jacket and put it around her shoulders. Lila’s jaw dropped again, a surprised yelp almost getting out of her throat. She looked at him, her eyes full of confusion. He stared right back at her, his silence explicit enough ; he didn’t have any explanation either. She bit her bottom lip, maybe repressing a smile ? She put the blame on the alcohol flowing through her veins and continued rolling her joint silently.
Once she was done, she lit it, took a few puffs and handed it to the redhead. She restrained herself from laughing when she saw him hold it between his thumb and index finger, brows drawn together while he tried to analyze it. It was clear he wasn’t used to smoking weed. When he noticed the girl watching him, he cleared his throat and took a big puff. Even if he didn’t, Lila knew he wanted to cough. She snickered and took the joint back from him, inhaling before blowing a smoke circle. Jacob made a tsk sound.
“Show-off.”
Lila actually laughed. Even she was surprised when the genuine chuckle got out of her throat and plastered a smile on her lips. Of course, it was the drugs... right ? Of course it was...
They finished the joint silently. At first, Lila was tempted to talk. She was used to smoking with Staci and rambling about all the topics in the world. And, for the last few weeks, her smoking buddies were Sharky and Hurk and they certainly weren’t quiet people... But this was Jacob Seed. If she did talk, what exactly was she supposed to say ? What do you do in your free time when you’re not torturing me ? Nah, didn’t seem like a good idea. So she stayed silent and so did he.
Lila tried to get more comfortable, pulling her legs in front of her and curling up in the large chair. Without really thinking about it, she let her head fall beside her... right on Jacob’s shoulder. To her surprise, he didn’t move. He didn’t say anything for a while and, eventually, he just exhaled loudly.
In just a few minutes, she was asleep.
When she woke up the next morning, Jacob was gone and so was his jacket on her shoulders. For a moment, she was sure all of this had just been an hallucination or a dream... But the empty bottle and rolling paper on the desk reminded her of the events of the previous night. Next to those, a set of clean clothes was folded.
A bit dizzy and weirded out by what had happened, Lila took a minute to breathe. Thankfully, her canteen wasn’t completely empty and she drank it all in one mouthful. Once she felt a little better, she got changed and rolled another joint. She smoked it alone, waiting for someone to comment on her almost perfect smoke circles...
A/n : I am actually happy about how this turned out. I think the story is going to be about 5 or 6 chapters long. But that might change depending on my mood.

The Demon Knows Best
hey guys!! how is everyone? i hope youll all excuse me for this late fic ;; school has been killing me but during my winter break ill make sure to post more! please study hard if you take exams this december but make sure to take care of yourself!! hopefully this will power you through exams <3
Word Count: 2,914
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Underage drinking, underage usage of drugs, driving under the influence, and swearing
lets get it!
------------------------
“Thank you so much for coming!” You yell out, waving at your friends for coming to your birthday celebration. You turn around and grin at all the presents left for you before jumping into the pile and starting to rip off the wrapping paper from the gifts.
Tearing the envelopes and boxes open, you’ve received countless cards to all your favorite stores and some clothing. You laid back once you’ve opened everything and smile. Your friends were so sweet to be giving you all these wonderful gifts. Making a mental note in your head, you were sure to thank them later on that day.
Just as you were about to stand up and grab a snack, a sharp edge stung the side of your thigh.
“Ow! What the hell!” You fume, about to throw the object that suddenly attacked you when you realized it was a wrapped present. Confused, you try to recall if you had missed any present but couldn’t come to any conclusion. Unwrapping the gift, you were left more confused than ever.
The present was a black box with gold engravings on the edges and forming a floral pattern in the middle of the square. Analyzing it from all six sides, the best bet as to what the mystery object could be was a decoration. You sigh, setting the object down and taking out your phone.
Typing in the group chat, you ask if any of your friends gave you a ‘sharp tiny box.’ The responses varied from, ‘hell no’ to ‘I bet it was from Jisung.’
You huff and throw your phone next to you. Did Jisung really buy you a decoration for your birthday? You sincerely appreciated the thought, but he knows that you two don’t share the same aesthetic.
That day, you didn’t look at the box again.
Nor the next day.
However, you messed with it the following week.
That night you were taking a break from studying and YouTube was getting boring so the next best option was to clean your room. Upon dusting your dresser, your eyes landed on the mysterious black box that had been secretly haunting your thoughts. Grabbing the box, you sat on your bed and stared at the markings.
Noticing the tiny scratches and small indents leads you to suspect that the gift had been previously owned. A loud groan fills your room. Why the hell did Jisung give you a box? More importantly, a box that has already been used! You seriously needed to teach him some proper gift-giving etiquette.
However, the box had scratches and small indents. Someone must’ve played with it or dropped it previously before. But if they had dropped it, why were they even looking at it in the first place? The box might’ve been the size of your hand, but it was quite heavy for its size.
Your finger glided across one of the golden strokes and the piece suddenly shifted to a new position. Your mouth hung open in shock and suddenly you yelled, “OH!”
It was a puzzle!
You carefully worked on the puzzle for twenty minutes and smiled in satisfaction once the final piece set in place. The markings weren’t supposed to be a floral piece, but a cat. But after that last piece set in place, the box began to glow. Throwing the box on your bed and jumping up from your seat, you wondered if the box was simply a decoration. Checking the time comforted you as it was late at night. The clock read 2:37 so it was about time you get some rest.
As the box began to glow more and more, soon becoming blinding to even look at, it was definitely not an illusion. Fearful to make a sound, you slapped a hand over your mouth and closed your eyes tightly, hoping it would all end soon.
Suddenly, the glowing stopped and you opened your eyes.
There was no longer a box in front of you, but a black-haired boy with just as black horns and a tail.
“Finally! I’ve been yelling at you the entire time to solve me.” He exclaims, sitting down as your desk chair while you stared at him with wide eyes.
He took a few chips from your chip bag before jumping up and holding his hand out. “I forgot, humans introduce themselves to each other. My name is Jeno.”
Due to you not responding, he took your hand and slid it into the grip of his, shaking firmly.
“W-What the hell are you?”
“Well, I’m not Hell. But I do come from it! I’m a demon. I’m friends with The Devil if you guys want to go out sometime.”
“I swear I can see stars right now…”
“No, no, no! That’s not good at all. Oh please don’t die on me! This has happened before.” He rushes you put a pillow behind you in case you collapse.
“W-WHAT?”
After taking a few moments to breathe and collect your thoughts, you iterate to Jeno the new information about his appearance.
“So, you’re a demon that’s supposed to make me do bad choices in order to live? Somewhat similar to a leech?”
He makes a pained face and grabs his heart. “Leech is low. Parasite is much more educated and proper.”
You stare at him in shock. The fact that demons existed in your oh so black and white world confused you more than ever.
“S-So, can you like go? I’m a very busy person and I don’t worship The Devil.”
Nope.” He plopped on your bed and snuggled into the covers.
“Why not?”
“Okay. So here’s the thing: I’m supposed to take your soul so I can leave and I need to make you as vulnerable as I can to make extraction easy. I need to make you do bad decisions though, almost like to destroy your sense of morality and slowly kill you from the inside to out.” Jeno monotones.
“I’m stuck with you until I die?”
“Or until I take your soul.” He winks and a strange pulling at your heart occurs.
However, being with Jeno wasn’t as bad as you thought. He threatened to eat your soul a couple of times but he honestly was a good dude.
“Ugh, I hate eating all this fast food.” You muttered, shoving a fry in your mouth, “but it tastes so good!”
Jeno sips on his milkshake loudly and nods. “I agree—Ooh! Brainfreeze!” He yells and holds his head, shaking from side to side. You grab the milkshake out of his hand and finish it, throwing away the garbage.
“Okay, what should we do next?” You questioned Jeno.
He was in deep contemplation, playing with the end of his shirt until he randomly stood up. “Video games!”
“With what system?” Your room had no consoles and no extra PC for him to play on.
Holding out a hand, a black mist covered his arm and a Nintendo Switch made an appearance.
You open your mouth to question him but he quickly cuts you off.
“What? You don’t think we have video games in Hell?”
You smirk and quickly rush to your TV, only to play Smash until the next day. The next day, however, happened to be a school day.
Falling asleep just twenty minutes ago and hearing your blaring alarm startled you from your slumber. You jolted up in surprise and groaned at the clock. “No way it’s already seven! I’m so tired.” Yawning and lying back down, you curled up close to Jeno. “You’re so warm.” The words came mumbled and gargled, but Jeno understood you perfectly.
Blushing, he opened up more towards you and whistled out, “Well, you can just skip.”
“Yeah… I might just do that.”
Jeno could feel your moral compass failing already, but he didn’t want to take your soul just yet.
That night your parents couldn’t stop yelling at you for skipping, but spending the day with Jeno made you feel better. They made you swear on your life to study that night to make up for skipping and you promised.
Having Jeno in the kitchen was a terrible idea. While trying to study names of scientists for chemistry, he kept opening and closing cabinets, banging pots and pans together, and trying every condiment available to him. He almost smashed a bottle of spicy mustard after it disgusted his tastebuds.
“Ohohoho! What do we have here?”
Turning over to the devil boy holding a bottle of fruity rum, you jump out of your seat and reach for the bottle, only to have your face pushed away.
“Jeno! No! You’re not drinking that!”
“Why? The drinking age in Hell is whatever you want it to be!”
You growled, “Good thing you’re on earth at the moment!” Jumping and stretching for the bottle only frustrated you more when all he did was raise his arm higher.
“Come on, don’t you want to try it? It’s going to be sooo long until you can try it.”
He tempted you and he was doing one good job at doing it. Pursuing your lips, you grab the bottle and two shot glasses, filling them halfway. You tentivany bring the alcohol to your lips and down it. The drink leaves a slight burn and leaves a pit of despair in your stomach afterwards if your parents ever find out what you were doing.
But it was damn good.
Jeno and you spent that night drinking and dancing in your room. Even though it left you with a hell of a hangover, you powered through the day and went to school that following morning.
All was going well (other than you almost tripping with every step) until lunch arrived.
Renjun was rambling off about his newest obsession which happened to be an anime while Chenle was picking at his food half-heartedly, more interested at his phone. Your group was only disrupted when Jaemin, Haechan, and Jisung sat at your table, almost clinging to each other.
“What happened?” Renjun stops his rant to question them.
“Well, you see, uh—“
“Haechan accidentally bought edibles!” Jisung yelled and Jaemin almost sent him out of his seat, a fist flying very close to his head.
“How the fuck do you accidentally buy edibles?” Mark asks, taking a seat at the far end of the table.
“I didn’t know what edibles meant! I thought it was one of those pretty arrangements of fruit!” He complained, slamming the bag of what appeared to be chocolate chip cookies.
Chenle let out a laugh before snatching the bag and letting out a even louder laugh. “Yep. These are for sure edibles.”
The whole table bursted out in laughter and amusement while Haechan’s face became a pretty pink color. He shoved his head in his hands and breathed, “I don’t know what I’m gonna do! I don’t even do drugs! I’m part of student council! They can’t catch me doing this shit!”
“I’ll take it.” You speak up, holding out a hand and Chenle places the bag hurriedly in your grasp.
“Ooooo, honor role student taking a bag of edibles? Who hurt you?” Jaemin giggles.
“Shut up. I know someone who’ll take it.” You grumbled.
Deep in the back of your mind, you knew it was a lie. You were the one who was going to take it, along with Jeno.
“Are you sure you wanna try this?” He asks, fidgeting with his fingers.
“Jeno, if I didn’t know you any better, I would say you’re scared!”
He was. He was incredibly terrified. Every time he looked at you, you were doing something bad. Whether it was telling a lie or drinking, your moral compass was decreasing at an impeccable pace. Jeno would admit he had developed a tiny crush on you. You were so innocent, but you slowly turned into someone he didn’t recognize.
You had already taken a bite out of the cookie and with crumbs falling out of your mouth, you speak out, “I don’t feel anything.”
An hour later, you laid on your bed and giggled. “Hey Jeno, how would a dog wear pants? On all four legs or only the back ones?”
Jeno wondered if someone high even acts like this.
“I can’t honestly tell you {y/n}, but I bet it’s based on preference.”
You chuckle and roll around in your bed. “Jeno—“ You call out sweetly.
A heat rushes to Jeno’s face and he replies, “Yes?”
“You know I like you a lot. Like, a lot a lot. More than a normal person should.”
Jeno feels his heart stop momentarily and he swallows the lump in his throat. “What do you mean?”
“Like, I think sometimes I’m in love with you.”
Oh, how ironic that now he feels as if he is going to faint.
He passes it off as you exemplifying your feelings and he states, “Maybe you should get some sleep.”
He looks back at you for your response and only breathes out a sigh of relief when he notices you’re in a deep sleep.
Slowly, Jeno started noticing your moral compass failing more and more. Although it was his job, he never wanted to take your soul. You were too pure to him, something untouchable. Fate hated you clearly, due to the black box within your room.
The last straw for Jeno was a late night at a party. Since it was Halloween, nobody would question his horns and tail. You decided you wanted to bring him along. Perhaps he pressured you to a few shots, but nothing more! He saw how much you could take with the fruity rum.
However, you stepped up to play a game of beer pong once Jeno used the bathroom. A few beers later and secret shots, you were officially wasted. Jeno, even as a demon, knew better than to let you wander around the disco-like party. He begrudgingly grabbed you and dragged you into your car.
Whilst he kept you from falling all over, he quietly waited for you to start the car, only to realize that you’re drunk and he doesn’t know how to drive on earth.
Panic sets in, but what’s the worst that could happen?
The worst nearly happened.
He didn’t think much of it when you were drifting off into different lanes, but when you almost crashed into a tree, he started to worried.
“Oh my Devil, I have a serious case of whiplash. Hey, are you alright?” Jeno shook your shoulder and you held a hand to your mouth.
“Dude, I’m seriously going to puke if you mess with me like that.” The words came out slurred and Jeno frowned. He knew something had to be done.
He made sure to get on your ass for the next week. Jeno made sure all your homework was completed and you studied at least one hour a day. You resented him for it and it caused that every day stress to creep back into your life once again. Feeling an itch to find some quick relief, raiding the liquor cabinet didn’t seem to do any harm in the short-term.
Sneaking quietly to the cabinet and grabbing one of your mother’s favorite champagne bottles, you turned around only to smack your face in the chest of a demon.
“And what do we have here?” Jeno questioned, snatching the bottle from you.
“Jeno, give it back.” You complained, reaching with little effort.
“What did I tell you about drinking?”
By this point, you were fuming. Who gave Jeno the authority to boss you around? It’s not like he cared anyway. He wants you to do these terrible things!
“Why do you even give a damn anyway? It’s not like you care.”
Jeno remained quiet and you felt your heartbeat pounding harder than ever.
“I don’t care? I am risking my job to keep you safe. I have disobeyed every law in Hell for you just to spend time with you. I even have a crush on you, my fucking host. If Satan ever finds out my feelings towards you, he would keep me as a pet, which is not fun at all!” He almost slammed the bottle on the counter before taking one final look at you. “But go ahead. I don’t give a damn apparently.”
Jeno left you and the bottle remained unopened.
You weren’t sure how to exactly apologize to a demon. They might not even accept apologizes! Yet you needed to set things straight with Jeno.
About an hour or two after your argument, you crept up to your room and tapped lightly on the door. Peering in, you saw the somewhat small lump on your bed, covered in your personal blankets. Resisting the urge to grin, you tiptoed to your bed and laid down next to lump.
After a few moments of shuffling, Jeno poked his head out from the blankets and pouted, “What do you want?”
You breathed out, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I fought with you and got mad. I know you’re looking out for me.”
Jeno contemplated your response before responding, “Forget about what I said earlier.”
Your mind flashes back to his confession and you feel suddenly light-headed, being in the same bed as the boy who just confessed to you.
“What about if I don’t want to?”
Suddenly, Jeno moves closer to your body and wraps both of you in the warm sheets.
“I would say don’t. After all, the demon knows best.”

Chapter 02. Colony
All thousand of the new colonists of Sea stood in the largest recreational plaza to wish the crew of the ESA 14 farewell.  Captain Alain wound up his speech by saying, “We have done our best to ensure that this colony has as good a start as it can have.  You know that we would have been willing to take you all back with us if it were possible.  The laws governing the physics of the Crossover drive will not let us.
“We will see that an expedition is sent to see how you are doing as quickly as the ESA can do so.  You will be on your own until then. Sometime between forty two to fifty years from now they will arrive. Until then, may you be blessed by whatever Deity you choose to pray to.
“I hope that the relief expedition finds you well and prospering.  May that vessel need only take back whatever unique and wonderful trade goods and ideas you have found to contribute to the community of mankind among the stars.”
To somewhat subdued cheers, the crew of the ESA 14 filed aboard their Slowpoke shuttle to return to the orbiting starship.  Lifting with the silence of any well functioning Crossover device, the shuttle dwindled into the sky and was gone.
Giles Willon turned to Marcus Angerson and observed, “Got to say, this planet is a bit of a disappointment.”  He flexed his elbows out from his body and finished with a grin, “Expected more elbow room. Know what I mean?”
Marcus snapped back, “Are you mocking me?  You know that I am a soils engineer!  The services of my specialty have been vital to the very survival of all twenty three other ESA colonies.  Why did the ESA even bother sending me here?  There is no land to bring to the needs of mankind.  No soils to engineer at all!  This is a travesty!”
Giles raised hand placatingly.  “There is no need for such anger, Marcus. We all know why we are here.  None of us is suited to a world like this.  The probe that found this planet was programmed incorrectly but nobody knew it until we got here.
“Its program assumed that any planet with an atmosphere like this one meant that it had significant land masses and that some form of photosynthetic plant life had to exist.  That is all.  We all knew that no matter what we found here, it was a one way trip for us.  It was a gamble.  We sort of lost.”
Small, black haired and eyed Pele Barant interjected, “Maybe we did win but just haven't realized it yet.  The gods can be really sneaky that way.”
With a sneer, Marcus turned his back on her, muttering, “False gods!”
Giles looked down a bit to Pele's usually cheerful Polynesian face and said, “Don't mind him.  He is just disappointed with his situation, that is all.
“By the way, I enjoyed working on the truss work of this station with you. You did a great design job.  We are lucky to have someone with your civil and mechanical engineering skills and marine architecture experience with us.”
Pele flashed Giles a ready smile and said, “Thank you.  I appreciate having someone who can look down to my face and up to my work at the same time.”
/////////
As the weeks passed into months, the station began to settle into a routine as people got used to the strange situation that they found themselves in.
/////////
In his quarters, Marcus Angerson closed the door of his study to shut out the sounds of his wife Trisha and their two children Benjamin and Lora while he brooded on the wrongness of his situation.  He pulled the blinds to seal away the glare of the sun and the vile sight of the endless ocean, with not so much as a sandbar above sea level anywhere on the entire planet.
There is no reason to it!  All of my years of study on how to adapt alien soils to the needs of mankind have been wasted.  Instead of being one of the most vital men for the colony's survival, I am now very nearly the least. What should I do?
His eye fell to the Bible on his working desk.  Sourly, he picked it up and began to read.  Somehow, it did not give the solace that it used to in times of difficulty.  Doggedly, he went all the way back to Genesis and began at the very beginning.
////////
Hugh Barant raced his wife Pele and daughter Mala'klea to their quarters. His long legs could have easily overtaken them but young Mala'klea loved beating him in races, as long as he didn't make it too easy for her.  Mala'klea's small hand hit the door frame only a tiny fraction of a second before Hugh's.  Flashing her father a high-spirited grin, Mala'klea ducked into their apartment.  Pele was already drawing wide the blinds to allow the generous sun of Sea to shine into their rooms and let them see the wonder of a rolling ocean that had no end.
There were some of Sea's many kinds of birds perching on the railing of their balcony.  They were waiting to see if the people inside had something that they would share with the birds . . . or that the birds could steal for that matter.  The birds apparently didn't see much difference.  Besides, Pele or Mala'klea always set out a plate of something for them to squabble over.  Today was no exception. Pele produced a fresh plate with a roasted fish that she had speared the other day while diving on the reef.  A small bird-storm developed around the plate.  The Barants sat on their side of the glass and watched with laughter and hugs.
/////////
Down in the Bio-safety and Nutrition laboratory, Kaim Hawadie told his many assistants, “Now that things are finally together, we need to got on the stick.  While we were helping to build this place we did get some reports out.  Just the construction area, less than one tenth of this reef complex, has yielded us a backlog of over three thousand samples to analyze.
“To help out, we have devised a report cover page that lists the following items.  1. Toxic, 1a. Useful Y/N, 2. Edible- no nutritional value, 3. Edible- contains ______,  4. Pharmacological value ______, 5. Other useful features _______.
“Our job is to get the reports out as quickly and accurately as possible. Of course, we are watching for the thymine, lysine and missing vitamins in every organism or sample that we test.  If we find them, those reports will get a special red flag cover.
“Other experts will be trying to make sense out of our reports.  Our job, and it is a big one, is just to get them the data.  Now let's get to the analysis.”
/////////
Mister Torres sat back in an easy chair and watched his son Jason playing on the living room carpet.  It was a Periodic Table game.  His lovely and talented wife Mikhala was sitting opposite Jason, taking her turn at the game's cards.
Sadly he wondered, Will this place last long enough for you to grow up, Jason?  Mikhala, will we live to see grandchildren?  I really had no choice in doing this.  What we have here is the best that I could give to you all.  It is simply a hope.  In the end, an empty hope.
Perhaps, Mikhala, my love, your knowledge of Slowpoke drive systems will let us move into space.  I will need to ask you about the possibility of building us another shuttle.  We can't risk such a move with only one shuttle.  Farms in orbit or under domes on Wotan might actually allow us to survive.  Down here those monster Coriolis storms doom long term farming or pretty much anything else.
I wish that I had someone that I could open up to about these things.
Mister Torres went back to studying his tablet computer.  Immersing himself in the multitude of tasks needed to keep the colony running as smoothly as possible provided relief from his fatalistic ruminations.
/////////
Molly Miken called Mister Makle on the video link and invited, “Hey, Bronnie!  Me and my structural maintenance crew are planning a barbecue cook-out and pot luck down on dock A.  Want to come?  Bring Tam and your son Mark along.  We requisitioned one of the work boats for the afternoon to play about.”
A grin on his face, Mister Makle replied, “We will be there.  We will have to stop by the Commissary to get something, though.  Tam just got off work and Mark is on his way back from school.  By the way, please don't spread my first name around, I took a lot of ribbing in school over it.”
Molly promptly shot back, “Don't worry about that, Boss!  Your secret is safe with me!  Unless I need to blackmail you for better working conditions . . . Bronnie.”
///////////
Marcus Angerson laid aside the Koran.  In his shuttered den, away from the detested sight of endless ocean and the glare of the sun that could spawn such an abominable world, he glared at the books as if his problems were their fault.  He thought, Months wasted.  None of these, not the Bible, Koran or any of the other religious texts that I can find sheds any light on the real problem.
Once again, the small voice that had been prodding and guiding him for the last month or so offered, ((Of course they don't.  Those books were written on Earth and, though they might provide some guidance, they were for the Earth.  You are not on Earth.  I do have a Plan for you, but the time is not yet ripe.))
Why am I so unnecessary?  By all rights I should be the most important single man in the colony!  In spite of my vital education, I remain utterly worthless. A mere teacher of children!
((At least that little pagan Barant got what she has had coming to her. In the end, all must come to Me.  Before that happens, you may need to be brought lower still.))
A knock at his study door interrupted Marcus' brooding.  Trisha, his wife, put her head in and announced, “Honey, dinner is waiting.  Would you please join us today?  We know how hard you are working, what with all of those school papers to grade.  Ben and Lora have missed you these last few weeks.”
With ill grace, Marcus came out to the apartment's dining area.  The window was open to the lowering sun, setting in a glory of low clouds, gilding them with gold, red and purple.  A light breeze came in off the ocean outside.
Seeing the light and the sight of the endless sea that he had been studiously shutting out irritated him.  Marcus strode angrily to the window and slid it shut with a bang.  He pulled the blinds, plunging the cheerful room into the gloom that better suited his mood.
Marcus stamped back to the table and sat.  He was reaching for his coffee when he heard Trisha's voice begin, “Sweet Lord, we thank you for the company at this table and this fine fish that you have provided us . . .”
Rudely he interrupted, “What are you doing?  The blessing is my duty!”
Benjamin, hands still folded, said mildly, “We didn't mean to upset you, father.  You haven't been here to say it for the last several weeks. We have been taking turns.  It was Mom's turn today.  Would you please say the grace for us?”
As he started to fold his hands, Marcus' eyes fell on the fish that lay on the plate at the center of the table.  It lay on a bed of green and wrinkly sea lettuce.  There was a hole through it, just back of the gills.  His brows drew down in a rage.  He demanded, “You were just asking me to sign for household money!  How could you afford such a fish as this?  You lied to me about being out of money!”
As Trisha looked up in shock at the accusation, Benjamin spoke up.  “The fish didn't cost us anything, Dad.  The Barants went diving on the reef a few days ago.  Pele sent Mala'klea around with it as a gift.”
Marcus' lip curled in disdain as he demanded, “And what would you have made for our dinner if you had not begged from that, that . . . heathen?”
Lora gave her father a confused look and said, “Nothing.  The kitchen is empty.  The Commissary turned down Mom's card when we went to shop today.  They said that there was no money left in it.  That is why she has been trying to get you to sign the transfer.”
Ignoring his daughter, Marcus grabbed the plate from the table and hurled both it and the fish on it against the wall.  He yelled in outrage, “We will not bend the knee to those vile pagans!
“That false idol worshiping fiend is behind all of my, eh, our misfortune!  At every turn, she is put up on a pedestal and I am cast lower!”
Trisha, eyes wide in fear, was looking at her husband as if she had never before seen him.  Tentatively she extended her tablet and stylus, saying, “Please dear, just sign the transfer and I will buy you whatever you want for din . . .”  Her head rocked back as Marcus slapped her in the face.  Her tablet fell to the table and skittered to a stop against Lora's dinner plate.
His own face twisted into a feral snarl, Marcus withdrew his stinging hand. Blood mingled with the tears that trickled down Trisha's cheek. He raged, “I sign you money every week!  You should have plenty!  Use it!”
Cringing in fear after his father's outburst, Benjamin found the courage to say, “You haven't signed us any money for about a month.  You keep saying that you will do it presently but you haven't done it.”
Scrabbling to recover her tablet, Trisha extended it in another desperate attempt to get the money that they all needed.  “Please, Marcus. Benjamin is right.  It has been three weeks since we had a weekly transfer for the household funds.  We are behind on our bills.  We have the money in the bank to pay for everything.  All that you need to do is sign the transfer.”
Anger causing him to draw a separate breath for each word, Marcus growled, “I. Am. Going. Out. . . When. I. Return. There. Will. be. Food. Fit. For. A. Godly. Man!”
Confused, the slap that she received bringing her greater pain than the brutal physical impact, Trisha asked, “Marcus?  What is wrong with you?  I am doing my best to . . .”  This time, the now furious Marcus hit her face so hard that her chair went over.  The tablet went flying, bouncing from the wall and landing on the floor.  The back of Trisha's head hit the wall and then thumped to the floor as she fell. Benjamin and Lora ran for their room and locked the door.
Marcus drove his heel deliberately into the tough glass of the tablet face, shattering it as he strode to the apartment door.  Over his shoulder he snapped, “You have joined the many seeking to bring me, to bring God Himself down and lift up the pagan above all!  It must not be! You must uphold me, uphold God, with proper food or suffer the consequence!”  The door slammed behind his retreating form.

What does a UX designer do?
I didn’t understand the value of user experience (UX) design until my first official job after I’d graduated university with a degree in Graphic Design.
My new creative director at the time gave me a set of wireframes, a series of web pages with blank boxes to represent text and simple block buttons, for an ecommerce site we were building for a high end baby carriage brand in London, and my first thought was, “What do I do with this?” At school, I was used to taking a directive and translating that brief into a high-fidelity, polished, final product ready to be graded, all in one fell swoop — so the in-between step of wireframing was new to me. I literally didn’t know what I was looking at.
I soon realized I had been designing user experiences before this project, I just hadn’t been doing it very well; I was skipping important steps between the idea and the final product, steps that slowed down my assumptions and invited me to walk in our users’ shoes. Skipping this critical stage of design prevented me from examining and improving the usability of the user experiences I was building.
Today, I have learned UX design tools, like wireframes and customer journey maps, that we use to structure the experiences we design at Webflow, instead of skipping ahead to the final product as I did early in my career. Working without UX tools is really just a slow and expensive way to fail.
UX design as a discipline for building online experiences is not as new, and is significantly more vast, than when I first started out as a designer; our UX design practices and the overall design literacy of the general population have deepened in the last two decades! But at its core, the need for UX design has always been present: to help technology be more accessible and make the ever-changing digital systems and platforms we use more intuitive.
As a designer with a long career arc ahead of them, the malleable nature of a UX designer’s job makes it all the more exciting, because there are innumerable possibilities for working in different industries and discovering specialties within the field.
What do UX designers do?
A UX designer thinks through the way people use something — whether digital or real-world products, processes or interfaces — and then designs or redesigns elements of that experience to be more user-friendly.
In the grand scheme of human ingenuity, UX design as a practice is still relatively new, and though it is especially useful in defining complex technology experiences, it can be applied to help solve nearly any problem or define any experience. Its impact is expansive. There are many flavors of UX designers depending on these various applications and what tools they may use to approach their problem set, which makes possibilities for a UX career somewhat boundless.
A UX designer can, for example, help define customer experiences for SaaS (software as a service) companies, like Webflow or Spotify or Netflix. They can be critical members of teams that build applications or other experiences in healthcare, government, or education. Or they may choose to specialize and dedicate their career to UX research or UX writing.
At Webflow, UX designers (often referred to as “product designers”) on our design team are responsible for three main areas of UX design:
Defining, exploring, and creating new features
Evaluating and testing those ideas with our target audience
Iterating on, or refining, their work, such as exploring alternative flows or layouts, based on feedback and other inputs from customers and stakeholders
The difference between a UX designer and a UI designer
User experience design aims to improve the overall experience someone has with a product, while UI design focuses on the actual elements of layout and interaction. User experience and user interface design jobs are closely related, and often rely on one another, but it is important to distinguish between them. UI is often undervalued as just the “skin” of a product or experience, but a great UI designer usually has an excellent grasp of UX. Vice versa, many great UX designers will have a solid understanding of how the interface will impact the experience.
We get to see this relationship in play all over the web. Take Adam Ho’s new portfolio website, for instance: There’s a design language used on their home page, with visuals that pop, fonts and colors that convey certain emotions, and a cohesive functionality guiding us to explore their work: these elements must work together to create a unified experience.
Or let’s look at a typical product teaser website: Lasso Loop. A UX designer would have intentionally chosen all of those overarching elements like a header image and headline, an intro video, the two buttons at the top to choose from. They would have figured out how to make certain desired customer pathways easier (such as the form for reserving a product). Then, a UI designer would have laid out each element on the home page, defining exactly how each element looked, how it was interactive (hover and focus states – ensuring elements are accessible), and the spacing between elements to achieve the right hierarchy of information. They may choose imagery, like product images or videos, or interactions, like parallax scroll features, being careful to ensure the page operated as intended – loading quickly and smoothly, and working seamlessly across many screens and devices.
Sometimes, both hats are worn by product designers who have a blend of both UX and UI capabilities. Regardless, a great UX designer usually works with UI in mind. (Here’s more on the key difference between UX and UI.)

What are the core skill sets a UX designer needs to have?
UX designers are responsible for the overall system that enables user experiences, so they need to have a diverse set of skills. Overall, the core skill for UX designers is the ability to perceive and analyze a user's goals through research and empathy, allowing them to design a system that enables the user to accomplish their goals. If you’re thinking of becoming a UX designer, building these core skills now will serve you well — and demonstrating them in a portfolio will be critical to practicing this discipline professionally.
Interrogation and assessment
UX designers solve problems for a living, so you’ll need to develop great interviewing and analytical skills. This might include looking at user analytics and interviewing customers, or observing them using your designs. The most powerful question for a UX designer is “Why?”, so it is necessarily to learn how to question decisions and behavior.
User testing and research
Both qualitative and quantitative research inform decisions as a UX designer. Qualitative UX research skills, like talking to users and conducting usability studies, and quantitative research skills, like evaluating metrics, can help gain the customer and stakeholder insights necessary for building a great experience.
Information organization
You’ll need to figure out the building blocks that shape an experience in order to redesign that experience. In what context are users coming into an experience? What are they trying to accomplish? What happens when they leave the experience? What are industry best practices and common UX patterns? Knowing basic information architecture best practices and how to apply them will help you answer these questions and get started on a design.
Prototyping
UX designers may build low-fidelity (paper or rough mockups) and high-fidelity (more polished and detailed interactivity) prototypes of what they’re designing in order to test ideas and quickly get user feedback. Prototyping helps communicate ideas effectively and can be great at moving a concept forward or illuminating areas for refinement so that the designs work better to meet the project’s objective.
Empathy
A little empathy goes a long way, and that especially applies to the UX design process. UX designers must be able to challenge their inner personal biases and ensure that they are designing for their end user and their pain points, not for themselves.
Leadership and project management
Getting everyone on a team to agree on what kind of user journey you want your company’s target user personas to have is a powerful leadership opportunity. Soft skills such as project management and conflict resolution can help meet any challenges along the way of executing the above processes.
UX designers have a big impact
Humans are spending more and more time on digital platforms. The experiences people have while they engage with those digital platforms so frequently — and the intuitiveness of the design of those platforms — can have a huge impact, whether on a business’s revenue or a patient’s health, depending on the application of that UX. In ecommerce alone:
Everyone shops online: Global ecommerce sales are expected to reach $6.5 trillion (USD) in 2022.
Digital messaging is one of the most popular methods of communication: WhatsApp alone boasted 2 billion monthly users in October of 2020.
According to Rehan Fernando, CEO at EIGHT25MEDIA, “Studies have shown that over 70-80% of people will research a company on the web before making a purchase decision, usually by visiting its website.”
It’s the UX designer’s responsibility to make sure the digital experiences for people who are living their lives online not only drives them to a desired goal (like putting an item in a cart, or effectively tracking their health), but also that users find these experiences easy, effective, and maybe even delightful!
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to work on the UX for an app that had a big impact on the lives of teenagers with diabetes. The purpose of the app was to help teens learn to better manage their diabetes, which can be a challenge both for them at their stage of life and for their parents. While the teens liked to be on their phones, they weren’t very motivated to track their glucose levels over time, so we integrated some game elements into our UX to make the app more fun to use: Patients would get badges and earn rewards by completing various tasks. This ultimately increased engagement, which helped them better self-regulate. By designing a more engaging UX, we were able to create better health outcomes for those patients.
Improving a user’s experience is a rewarding process in which you can not only solve an interesting design problem but also help improve people’s lives.
Advice for UX designers
This is an industry where specialties and standards are constantly evolving as we learn more, often better, ways of doing things. For that reason I try to think of design as a very broad practice, so as not to get hung up on any single job title or even job requirement. In reality, given time, those particulars will change. I’ve seen numerous iterations of UX design, visual design, and product design job titles and descriptions over my career. What doesn't change is the need for designers to be curious, to solve problems, and to keep an open mind. It is curiosity and creativity that will equate to longevity in your career.
My older brother gave me advice when I was just starting out as a designer that served me well: “In the early days, say ‘yes’ as much as you can, so that you can embrace every opportunity, however big or small.” When you say ‘yes’, you get to learn myriad ways to solve problems in a hands-on setting. After you've had those experiences and begin to carve out your own niche in the industry. And I, for one, can’t wait to see what you can do.

“I kept track of the violence done to Black people in my city, Toronto, and my country, Canada, as if it was being done to me, because it was, because it is, because that’s what Black people are facing in Canada and around the world, and I’d never been more aware of it.”
When Desmond tells of the violence that is happening to him metaphorically, through others who are experiencing it physically- All across Canada, I recognize this as truth. He is not being selfish in feeling that this violence is also done unto him, as it is for the person physically involved. It would be selfish to think that he could not relate, because that is not his problem in the moment. It would be selfish if because he lives in Toronto, and violence in British Columbia against Black people happens, that it has nothing to do with him. I will liken this to an experience of my own, and challenge others to think abstractly and connect the dots. September 11, 2001- A day of destruction, alleged terrorism, and global fear. I remember being in class when this happened, and my sixth grade teacher asked us to take a moment of silence for it and to discuss the event. This had nothing to do with Canada. I was not involved with these families that suffered, or the government that protected them. I was a little 10 year old girl, who only knew that if my dad, mom, uncle, aunt, or whoever I loved was in that tower that I would feel tragedy. To me, that is why I sympathized with this event. Because if something similar happened in my country, I would hope that others would share my same feelings.
Being metis, I share the same feelings that Desmond does for the violence Black people experience daily. Indigenous people are being profiled, and abused every day as well. Our causes are similar. I cannot attest that our origin stories are the exact same. I cannot say that one is more pressing than the other. All I know is that, if I can feel suffering for my ancestors, then I can share the same feelings with immigrants who were taken from their countries, forced into slavery, made to start their lives in North America, and to continue to be robbed of honour and respect every single day.
“A CBC News investigation that analyzed 461 fatal civilian encounters with police between 2000 - 2017 found that “70 percent of people who died struggled with mental health issues or substance abuse or both.” The combination of this violence with the police targeting of Black people makes Black people with mental health issues more likely to experience police violence. The CBC also found that, of the 461 deaths, “criminal charges were laid against 18 officers… With only two ending in convictions.”
To me, this is proof that our system of police and authority is grossly under trained and ill-prepared. Police are able to perform “wellness checks,” on civilians, but only when prompted by a person who has called and claimed that said person’s wellness is in question. Police feel that they do not have to assess, de-escalate, or consider external factors in an investigation, false or with merit. These are horrifyingly sad statistics, that I believe many people would just glaze over. The typical citizen doesn’t understand enough about mental health, to care about mental health. There is a culture of common socially acceptable misunderstanding, when mental health is in question. It is okay to not know. There are cues that one can detect about mental health, if given the chance. Crying, hyperventilating, excessive language, obvious frustration, resistance to identify, these are actually all signs that someone might be experiencing mental distress, or exacerbation of their pre-existing mental health condition. Police are here to enforce the protection of personal property and assets. Opting for violence against someone who is mentally unstable, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, White, Asian any race is not the answer. Protect and serve. Protect lives of police, against usually unarmed unsuspecting vulnerable people, and serve to uphold the laws that help protect officers of wrongdoing. That is what that statement means nowadays. When officers use violence against people who have mental health problems, and do not question this as a possibility first, we see why this system fails 100 percent of the time.
“In my experience, the average white Canadian doesn’t know that British and French settlers enslaved Black and Indigenous people on these lands for two centuries, and simply shifted legislative tactics once they had abolished “legal” slavery. Those who do acknowledge slavery in Canada often add that it was “not as bad as in the States,” a nod to the white Canadian proverb used as a checkmate end to a conversation. No need to consider anti-blackness here. This idea that Canada’s racial injustices are not as bad as they could be- This notion of slavery lite, of racism lite, of what my friends calls “toy version of racism”- Is a very Canadian way of saying “remember what we could do to you if we wanted to.” Passive- aggressive racism is central to Canada’s national mythology and identity. White supremacy warns Black people against setting our own standards and pursuing dreams that stray too far from the global atmosphere of anti-blackness.”
My parents were never taught this, so they never had the opportunity to educate me. Years of public school didn’t ever teach me about slavery in Canada. Not even of slavery of Indigenous people. I remember being taught about the “trading,” and “successful negotiations” that would happen among settlers and my ancestors, sometimes after battles. Settlers considered themselves to be a type of saviour, to this land. Not once, were slaves given a voice in the education system that was taught when I was growing up. The reason for this, in my opinion, is that knowingly, this information directly contradicts the “hard work,” that British and French settlers did for Canada today. These settlers are the reason we even have an education system, the same system that blindfolds it’s students. That information would be detrimental to the foundation of Canada. This misleading information, this terrible kind of education is the reason why we have violence and racism in this country. This is why racialized groups are marginalized and oppressed. White Canadian citizens feel that they are the ones that are owed thank yous, and apologies. They are owed sympathy and rewards for “letting” immigrants take shelter in this great country.
“BLM-TO co-founders and their supporters marched into the 2017 parade close to the intersection of Yonge and College street where, a year earlier, they’d interrupted the festivities to call out Pride Toronto, the not-for-profit organization that runs the annual celebrations. This time the group’s signs read, “May we never again need to remind you that we, too, are queer,” and “May we never again need to remind you that WE built this” and that “we shut it down for ALL OF US.” I remember this as righteous, bold, inspirational and powerful- But not surprising.”
I wish I could have been there to agree with them. To rally beside them, and take honour in their pride. To me, this is a reminder that the society we live in today, no longer cares about history or where we came from. It no longer cares about the pain and suffering that was experienced, to get us to where we are today. When the executive of Pride misleading signed their list of demands when BLM-TO interrupted the parade and said the next day “What I did was move the parade forward,” I get that, however I felt distrust. I felt that having pride in your own dignity meant nothing, and that people are constantly misconstruing what this means. People mistake integrity, with entitlement. They confuse honour, with gratification. This was a great reminder that, where we come from, in all walks of life, our paths should never be forgotten. It should never be disrespected or looked down on. Everything that we go through, unjust or just, shapes, molds, and builds who we are today as a civilization and individuals.
“Canadians who do recognize historical injustice seem to understand it in this way:
Bad things happened.
Bad things stopped happening and equality was achieved.
The low social and political status held by Indigenous peoples is now wholly based on the choice to be corrupt, lazy, inefficient and unsuited to the modern world.”
Desmond quotes this excerpt from Chelsea Vowel’s novel “Indigenous Writes.” This three point bulletin explains exactly how most Canadians understand their country now. It highlights that things happened, and now there is a notion that those same things no longer happen. These days when government officials in Ottawa hold press conferences, or public meetings, they say “ We [I] would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.” I am not disagreeing that they should not acknowledge it. However, I acknowledge that it is not enough, and never will be enough. Bad things happened to these people, and they get less than 2% of Canadian soil for reserves. Acknowledging that these lands once belonged, and still rightfully belong to these nations and tribes, only serves to coddle Canadians, and dismisses the conversations that many people are still fighting to have.

Luca Balsa 6w7
[[08 August 2020
Originally written as a comment thread on PDB]]
It seems that this is another case of an inventor/scientist character being voted as a 5 by default, rather than by actually analyzing his personality or canon information. Here we have the first paragraph of his background, containing several counterindicators of being a 5 with a 4 wing:
“Luca Balsa used to be considered friendly and too trusting by most people. No one knows where he came from or has seen his family, but clearly, he's well educated. He has a tremendous sense of pride and he is curious about all sorts of scientific inventions.“
Most significant here is that he is described as being both “friendly” and “too trusting”, at least, prior to the accident. Nowhere is he described as withdrawn or aloof, a trait that the 5 and 4 both share; nowhere in his character bio is Luca said or implied to be cold or avaricious. Unlike a 5, Luca does not seem to feel that expectations of others are a burden, and certainly isn’t a character who seeks to distance himself from his own emotions.
While it’s true that he is described as being “curious about all sorts of scientific inventions”, this does not in and of itself mean he is a 5. His curiosity could just as easily come from being an ENTP, and/or an enneatype with influence from 7. It is important to remember that 5 is not the only enneatype in the thinking triad; by virtue of being a “triad”, there are in fact two other enneatypes characterized by the individual’s strong connection to the brain.
If he were truly a 5w4, the double withdrawn, double internal focus of attention from both enneatypes would be magnified, becoming a distinguishing feature of his character. However, it is not; the one trait he has that could potentially indicate a 5 or 4 influence is his “tremendous sense of pride”, although this is a characteristic shared with other enneatypes, such as the 3 or the counterphobic 6.
Based on his character trailer, I find that 6w7 is far more likely than 5w4, taking into account both instinctual stacking and influence of the wings. Since the trailer is narrated by Luca himself, it offers some important insights into his character. To begin, here is Luca transitioning from talk of his inventions to talk of his mentor:
“You know, it feels so good to have one’s invention. But why did he always think I got it wrong? I never found the answer, not even when the electric current struck his brain”
The way he phrased it is significant; it shows an inner feeling of insecurity based around what a trusted authority figure felt about him. Although Luca himself seems to be perfectly satisfied with his own work, his mentor was not. Rather than dismissing this judgement — after all, he did not agree with such an assessment — he instead seems to be deeply troubled by this.
By saying that he never found an answer, “not even when the electric current struck his brain”, Luca implies that the invention itself worked perfectly fine. Even with the accident, it wasn’t the invention that malfunctioned. Based on the visuals in the trailer, the accident was caused not by faulty machinery, but by a physical altercation between the mentor and Luca. Therefore, the emotional turmoil caused by this is not a product of the 5’s fear of incompetence.
Furthermore, while Luca gives the impression of being secure in his own competency, it appears that his mentor’s disapproval still holds weight for him; given the circumstances, a 5 or a 4 would be far less likely to give much merit to the opinions of someone who couldn’t — or wouldn’t — articulate their reasons. Generally, once a 5 or a 4 has judged their own worth or decided they have completed a task to their own standards, it would take clear reasoning to sway them from this belief. However, without even explaining why or how Luca was wrong, the mentor was able to make Luca doubt himself. Therefore, it seems that while Luca may be confident in his abilities, he still has an inner desire to receive approval or reassurance from an external source (in this case, from a superior).
But what of the line directly preceding this? The line where Luca expresses this sentiment about his invention:
“I knew since I first saw it that I’d never fall in love with anything else.”
It’s perfectly understandable that one might mistake this as being indicative of a 4 wing; after all, this sort of romantic, almost poetic expression of feeling is indeed common among the type. That does not, however, mean it is exclusive to the 4. Still, there is undoubtedly some confusion as to how this line could possibly support a 6w7 interpretation of Luca’s character. To understand this, it is first necessary to understand instinctual stacking.
The 6 is typically thought of as being the most anxious type on the enneagram, and in many ways, this is true; however, the expression of the individual’s fear spans traits at opposite ends of the fight vs flight spectrum.
The phobic 6 is more openly fearful, avoiding conflict and complying with others. Their reserved nature and occasional withdrawal appears more like a 5. Meanwhile, the counterphobic 6 charges into danger, hoping to silence the fear by beating it into submission. Counterphobic 6’s tend to have either sx or so at the top of their instinctual stack, with sx 6’s appearing the most outgoing and confident. With a more active presence, the sx 6 shares more of the energy of a 3 or 8.
Luca appears to match up to the traits of an sx 6, reflected by his friendly and confident nature. Even more important is the sx 6’s connection to the vanity of the 3: in order to distract from feelings of fear, or worrying about worst case scenarios, the sx 6 turns their attention to beauty and aesthetics. To avoid feeling or appearing weak, the sx 6 also adopts a false courage, which can sometimes come off as arrogance. These characteristics of the sx 6 encompass Luca’s pride, as well as his romantic framing of the invention’s beauty.
Once a solid foundation for an sx 6 Luca is made, the 7 wing naturally follows. In general, the sp 6 maps to a 5 wing, while the sx 6 maps to 7, since both are largely determined by the individual’s balance of phobic and counterphobic tendencies.
The 6w7 is characterized by attempting to quiet fears and doubts through forming close connections with other people, and are usually described as being funny and likable. In contrast to the 6w5, the 6w7 is socially extraverted and lighthearted, aided in part by the 7’s harmonic pattern: positive outlook. This follows the description of Luca as being “friendly” and “too trusting”; as a sx 6, his way of handling doubt is by befriending others and seeming self-assured, even if he isn’t.
Having laid this framework, a solid interpretation of the rest of Luca’s backstory can be explicated.
“The great inventor thinks highly of Luca and a lot of people thought he would be the inventor's successor. Yet everything came to a halt because of an academic dispute.  The great inventor claimed that Luca sold his research to a competitor behind his back, that Luca is an ungrateful traitor. Yet Luca said the great inventor is a thief who has run out of ideas.”
Of course, this resulted in the lab accident that cost Luca his mentor and his freedom, and the amnesia he suffered means the truth remains a mystery. Regardless, the dispute itself seems to me an example of Luca counterphobically reacting to the betrayal of a man he believed in and looked up to. The 6 is characterized as being the most loyal of the types, with faith and trust being the “holy idea”. Because of this, the 6 is extremely reactive to breaches of this trust, with the sx 6 in particular becoming belligerent or explosive when feeling insecure or fearing abandonment.
Having his mentor accuse him of being an ungrateful traitor, regardless of the claim’s veracity, would undoubtedly have made him upset independent of enneatype. However, Luca’s harsh counterclaim, as well as the physical altercation that followed, seems to be a clear case of a 6 reacting to betrayal and an unjust use of authority, going on the attack rather than withdrawing the way a 5 (especially with a 4 wing) would be more likely to do.
Luca demonstrates a number of traits unique to the sx 6, but that does not mean there is an absence of the type’s core traits. One defining feature of the 6 is the anxiety, or more specifically, the anticipation of problems. The in-game explanation of Luca’s “Super Circuit” trait offers the following description:
“To play it safe, the "Prisoner" set up a connection between the two Exit Gates in advance. While the Exit Gates are opened, the coded lock will connect automatically, allowing transmission of the Decoding Progress between the two coded locks.”
The wording of this passage caught my  eye, the sentiment being expressed in the simple phrase “to play it safe” all but crying out core type 6. Having specifically set it up “in advance”, Luca displays the telltale 6 trait of quelling fear through anticipating future threats and obstacles (and then taking physical action to guard against or “solve” them). While I can in no way see Luca as having a 5 core, it’s undeniable that even as a 5, his wing would be a 6 rather than a 4.
At its center, the 6 is a thinking type characterized by the use of intellect to make sense of the world, anticipating threats or problems and moving to mitigate them. Whether sx, sp, or so, there is an inherent conflict with authority, with the two extremes of staunch loyalty and passionate rebellion. There is a friendliness and warmth to the 6 that the 5 and 4 lack; with a 7 wing, this disparity becomes even more pronounced.
Drawing on information already given by netease, I find it difficult to type Luca as anything but a 6w7, unless one is simply relying on stereotypes. In summation, Luca displays several hallmark traits of the sx 6w7 (eg. friendliness, hidden anxiety, and a trusting nature) while entirely lacking key 5w4 indicators (trouble living in reality, eccentricity, and a withdrawn nature/being a “loner”).

Chief Privacy Officers: The Unicorns of K-12 Education
Last month, the nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) published a report arguing schools and districts should go the way of other industries and hire a Chief Privacy Officer to oversee their organization’s privacy policies and practices.
Page by page, the report explains what a CPO is, why the role is necessary and even provides a two-page sample job description districts can use to begin the hiring process for a CPO.
The intent here is good, says Linnette Attai, a K-12 privacy expert and founder of the global compliance consulting firm PlayWell, LLC. Schools and districts collect, manage and analyze more data now than ever before. That data can be used to improve K-12 decision-making, tailor instruction to each student and flag when one student needs extra attention or assistance. But because data can also be misused, abused, exposed and manipulated, it must be protected. Thus, the need for a Chief Privacy Officer—someone who can establish and enforce privacy policies, train staff on privacy procedures and ensure that all data is collected and shared safely.
But the reality is that Chief Privacy Officers in K-12 education are about as common as unicorns. EdSurge contacted education nonprofits, a technology association and a handful of privacy experts, and none could identify a single K-12 CPO. In fact, it is still extremely rare for districts to hire even one full-time employee dedicated to privacy—leadership or otherwise—says Attai, who frequently advises K-12 districts on privacy issues.
“It should be a leadership position, but it’s not,” she tells EdSurge. “We’re a really long way off from it ever being there, and we may never be there.”
The reason comes down to funding, Attai says. K-12 districts have to establish their priorities, and while privacy continues to move up that list, a CPO isn’t likely to make the cut.
Still, she emphasizes that the absence of a CPO in K-12 is not synonymous with a shoddy privacy program: “It’s unfortunate, but it doesn’t have to be detrimental to student privacy protections.”
Instead of going the more aspirational route outlined by the CDT, Attai argues that districts start by giving privacy personnel—or the closest they have to it—the ears and attention of school leadership. If they’re not going to have a seat at the table, they at least need to communicate with those who do.
In at least two public school districts—both large systems that serve close to or more than 100,000 students—that’s how it works. Denver Public Schools in Colorado and Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland have each hired a senior-level official who is responsible for the organization’s privacy policies and data governance.
Denver’s Student Data Privacy Officer
Two years ago, Denver Public Schools created a new role, the Student Data Privacy Officer, after the Colorado legislature passed a law to promote student data privacy and transparency.
Bryan Westerman, then a client tech analyst for the district, became the first person to fill the position. At a high level, his job is to ensure that DPS—the largest district in the state, with 90,000 students—complies not only with federal privacy laws (FERPA, COPPA, CIPA) but with the new state one as well.
Colorado was one of the first states, along with California and Connecticut, to pass a sweeping student privacy law, Westerman says. The law focuses on three main areas: data use and data use restrictions for third parties; data destruction, which is required at the end of a contract term or vendor relationship; and transparency, so the public can know which vendors each district does business with.
In his role, Westerman works closely with the district’s legal team to make sure their policies are in compliance with the law. He also spends a lot of time on contract reviews, he says.
When the state legislature passed its privacy bill in summer 2016, a group of district technology leaders in the state convened to get a game plan. “We said, ‘OK, this new law is going to be big and change a lot about how we do business. Let’s come up with a contract template for this but one that still allows us to do our own thing,’” Westerman recalls. “There was a lot of consensus and collaboration with that.”
The education leaders created the “Data Protection Addendum,” a document that each district requires its vendors to sign. A sample addendum—in this case, it was used with the company Amplify—can be viewed here. As part of its commitment to public transparency, DPS publishes each data protection addendum and vendor privacy policy online.
Westerman is a “team of one” at DPS, he says, which makes him the only person in the state in his role or one like it, although district IT staff are sometimes drafted. “There are other people who do this work, but it’s not an official designation. They’re told, ‘Hey, this is part of your job now.’ Those folks need the simplest, easiest ways to manage this stuff. In Denver, we are fortunate enough to get to take a hard look.”
In his position, Westerman reports to the chief information officer’s (CIO) chief of staff, which is comparable to a deputy CIO.
Baltimore County’s Director of Innovation and Digital Safety
Over 1,000 miles away, in Baltimore County, Md., Jim Corns is helping steward the data of nearly 115,000 students.
Corns was named the new CIO of Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) in November 2018, but prior to that, he served as the district’s director of innovation and digital safety. It’s the closest thing BCPS has to a privacy official, Corns says.
The position was created in 2016, and Corns was the first to occupy it (it’s currently vacant, due to his promotion, but the district plans to fill it).
Unlike Denver, BCPS didn’t create the role in response to a new state law, nor was there a major data breach that precipitated it. The community was beginning to express concerns about privacy as schools adopted more and more technology, Corns says, and parents wanted to feel confident their students’ data was being handled appropriately.
“It was a proactive move [by the district] to say, ‘Look, this is where the future is headed, and this is how we’re getting in front of it,’” he explains.
In his first full year as director of innovation and digital safety, Corns says he devoted much of his time to data privacy—e.g., calls with the legal team about bringing on new vendors, establishing policies and procedures for vendor relationships, including what data to share and when to destroy it.
As part of that work, Corns’ team built out a data governance manual that laid out how the district would move data in and out of its system, as well as who would own it and how data would be suppressed to protect student privacy. They also developed a data-sharing agreement.
“Baltimore County takes a different tack in how we interact with our vendors,” Corns explains. “We don’t allow edits to our data-sharing agreement. It’s the document all of our vendors have to sign off on to do business with us. We’ve had vendors that refuse to sign it, and we don’t do business with them.”
When Corns was in the director role, he attended bi-monthly meetings with leadership to discuss updates and changes that had been made to the district’s data privacy and data governance policies, and he frequently met with the district’s “chiefs” to discuss privacy issues, he says. “It’s definitely a best practice to have somebody work to ensure privacy at that level.”
Attai agrees, reiterating that if privacy personnel in a district aren't a part of the leadership team, they must at least be heard by it.
“Leadership has to be heavily invested in understanding the complexities of managing student data privacy. It has to support and drive the creation of a privacy program,” Attai says. “It doesn’t work without leadership investment. This is not something that can be bootstrapped from the bottom up.”

Things To Do In Jacksonville
Nonprofit Rip-Offs Escape Public Outrage
Pharmaceutical costs, gas costs, medical professional's fees, insurance company shenanigans, as well as various other rip-offs are deservedly under fire the majority of the time by an outraged public. However why are nonprofits unsusceptible to criticism?
Nobody is screaming bloody murder over the cost of college despite the fact that schools are constantly expanding in wide range as they bill steadily climbing tuitions as well as at the same time lay off an increasing number of workers.
It was announced just recently that one of the country's most prominent colleges is allowing nearly 200 staffers go since one of their endowments has actually been lowered to $26 billion. Neither the president, nor the department heads, neither any one of the faculty will certainly be impacted, and neither will certainly the building of new structures.
Building will always proceed because with nonprofits the money need to be spent. The annual report at the end of the year could not show a profit. There is a profit to be sure, ever bigger annually, yet it could not be considereded as an earnings. It should appear as an investment in the organization itself.
The only distinction between a for-profit and a nonprofit corporation remains in where the earnings goes. In the corporate globe, it mosts likely to the supply holders. In the nonprofit world, it mosts likely to the organization's essential individuals, to useful jobs of all kinds, and largely to new buildings.
Despite the fact that tuition keeps going up, as well as though the excess earnings is difficult to conceal, the high quality of education does not transform. The old concept that you obtain exactly what you spend for does not fit well when it involves higher education.
It is feasible, nevertheless, to obtain an under-qualified student admitted to a high-ranking university by making a huge but extremely proper payment to the age-old monument of academic community. After that you do get just what you pay for. If you have adequate money, your child can go the university of his/her option.
The same game goes on with nonprofit healthcare facilities. A woman I understand spent most of her adult life until retirement as an accounting professional for 2 significant hospitals in the Philadelphia location. As the end of each approached, she required greater than one glass of sherry to assist her kick back when she obtained house. Hiding the cash seemed difficult yet somehow she and also her group did so efficiently time after time.
As medical facility prices maintain increasing, the care of poor people in the emergency clinic or clinics keeps worsening. A healthcare facility in Jacksonville Florida flatly averts poor people regularly using some hardly legal excuse. Other health centers just make without insurance individuals wait till they either disappear or establish a real emergency.
If your instance ends up being critically urgent, you are most likely to be seen by someone, but still there is no guarantee, especially if you don't have insurance policy. Poor people that die waiting are not likely to sue. The populace that is likely to bring a lawsuit goes to the head of the line. Those darn lawyers!
Sometimes, despite having the most effective insurance policy, your treatment will certainly be delayed or merely not given. I took my mom to the Emergency Room once when she was dried out plus showing heart signs and symptoms, and because the staff acknowledged her, she was hesitantly taken into an analyzing space.
She laid in a bed in that room for a full Thirty Minutes, up until I, in a fierceness, marched as much as the nurses' terminal, where I found them kicking back chatting as well as laughing. I was forced to require that she be seen.
There was definitely no lack of cash at that medical facility. They were in the midst of three building projects, and also I might hear the heavy tools grumbling outside my mom's unattended room. The structure professionals were very hectic, yet the registered nurses were talking, and also no physician was seen anywhere I looked.
These kinds of plagues go on increasing because nobody grumbles. The business globe gets all the fire, but the nonprofits just maintain obtaining fatter.
My very own earnings is very tiny, so I have to aim to obtain healthcare from a public facility that is under the Florida Department of Health And Wellness. My pharmacy had to call the clinic seven times prior to a refill on my high blood pressure medicine could be acquired. No one responded to the phone.
When I mosted likely to my last consultation for a checkup, scheduled 3 months ahead of time, I was turned away due to the fact that they were awaiting their Medicare re accreditation. They were too active relaxing to call me and reschedule, so they waited up until I arrived.
I can't get much treatment because area, however the building is magnificent!
