Also a huge bummer that you did have people like Nikolai Petrakov and Valentin Pavlov who understood both the scope and the fundamental problems with the Soviet economy at the time, and had schemes for reform that could manage the transition to a market economy without the need for brutal shock therapy, but they get ignored or their plans don't get acted on because of Gorbachev's indecisiveness and his lack of economic acumen. It's a colossal missed opportunity.

#the former is also what causes him to lose ground to yeltsin and then the other republic leaders #his skills as a leader just are not up to the huge task in front of him #and it is a huge task #the collapse of the USSR is like six different crises unfolding at once #an energetic and skillful leader with an energetic and skillful cabinet could manage it i think #but gorbachev isn't that leader and he doesn't have that cabinet
