smth that was incredibly jarring in a fic i read this week, on the topic of half-baked ideas of justice in superhero media, was spider-man stopping a robbery (explicitly! it was definitely just a robbery!) and telling the robbers to go home and think about their choices
like. peter parker, a guy who is poor and grew up poor. peter parker! who in this same fic was struggling to make rent! telling someone to rethink their choice to steal! as if everyone who commits theft, specifically, is just a bored trust fund kid with no concern for others. as if there are no other factors than personal choice. as if a guy who can only mostly afford to keep a roof over his head wouldn't fucking know better that sometimes you don't get the fucking luxury of a victimless option sometimes you just get to pick if the victim is you.
#yelling at clouds#there's this impulse to be like. he's a small-time guy he deals with small-time problems he can't be battling supervillains all the time!!#but genuinely i wld argue it is more ethical to be battling supervillains#a supervillain is someone who knows they are gonna attract superhero attention. probably that's at least partly their goal.#a guy holding up a bank just needs the money. they didnt implicitly consent to grievous bodily harm by costumed guy.
