hi sorry if this seems a little rude, if chara isn't really bad, then why do they kill them on the soulless route?
(I always wanted to know about it)
(not rude at all! feel free to ask questions like this its no skin off my back) which âthemâ are you referring to? that could mean different things like: the underground, the player, Frisk ect. its a little vague)
but Iâll try to answer this with the above being vague anyway
---
hoo boy this ended up long LMAO. coming back from the bottom to say Sorry this ended up this lengthy. hereâs some
content warnings: discussions of canon and implied dark topics such as: abuse, murder, death, suicide, and self harm
---
TLDR: Chara is a complex character with a rich backstory and motivations. by looking at the full game, you understand theyâre a mentally ill child who is just following the playerâs directions. YOU do the killing, Chara is your partner in crime because you force them to be.
Chara is the narrator in ALL routes. they are the UI, stats and narration.
it is Charaâs memories that convinces Asriel to remember how they met and how much they loved each other when alive. Chara is key to Asriel freeing the underground, they are a god dang hero
letâs look at canon Chara pre-game to fully understand whatâs going on though.
-Chara lived in a village close to mt.Ebott. they decided to climb mt.Ebott for âa not happy reasonâ and hated humanity
-once underground, they become the sibling to Asriel and become a full fledged Dreemurr. They love their family. âitâs a dusty photo. everyone is happy.â (which, if you believe is the photo of Chara holding the flowers next to Asriel, implies Chara is smiling under them and their bangs) + the Mr.Dad Guy sweater + baking a pie for their dad
-in the underground, thereâs the Deltarune prophecy. it reads as follows: âThere is a prophecy. The Angel... The One Who Has Seen The Surface... They will return. And the underground will go empty.â
-Toriel and Asgore are both strong believers of the Deltarune as seen by the symbol on their clothes and homes.
-Chara has been to the surface and therefore, most believe Chara is the angel that will free them.
-Chara is a small child, who hates humanity, loves their family, and by fate is destined to free monster-kind. they are determined.
-Chara and Asriel decide to prank Asgore by making a pie with buttercups instead of a cup of butter. They learn the flower is poisonous and Asgore gets sick, but ends up fine. Chara laughs it off, but if one is paying attention to the game, you will see that their is a very common theme of smiling/laughing when distressed.
Toriel smiling, laughing when being killed in no mercy
Migospelâs whole game-play is about how one acts around others vs. alone â Laughter hides the pain. [Alone]â
sans can be seen as a broad example
a VERY good example is the snowdrakeâs mother fight:
âYou laugh, and keep laughing. It's SO funny, you can't stop. Tears run down your face. | ... what? You didn't do that? [Laugh]
But it's not funny. [Laugh again]â
-Chara hates humanity (epilogue Asriel says that) and by extension, would hate themself. you can read into the tools being worn down to being blunt + no knives in the kitchen as being precautions Toriel put in place to prevent Chara from self-harming. Chara attempts suicide twice in the gameâs story.. Also! Itâs implied Chara was abused before coming underground. â If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard.-faded ribbon flavor textâ and the fact Chara thought to kill the villagers in the first place, they didnât get the âkill or be killedâ mindset out of nowhere. + abuse can manifest in depression, anxiety, and Chara displays behaviors of coping with abuse. (harder to explain that detail, but Charaâs control-issues and distrust just SCREAMS abuse to me)
Chara is a kid with severe mental illness, implied to be abused, and all while younger than 13. thatâs a lot to take in. which is also why a lot of people are upset at âChara is evilâ theories because it ignores that context and demonizes them. which is. bad. for lots of reasons. but mainly for how it handles the topic of survivors of abuse and mental illness and theyâre just a freaking kid.
-anyway, long tangent aside... so this next point is more so how I interpret the order of events: Chara climbs the mountain to die, but trips and meets the Dreemurs. They become beloved by the kingdom and believed to be their savior. Chara canât escape humanityâs history of trapping monsters or their own history of their horrible village, and when Asgore is poisoned they realize theyâre bad too. Itâs a common mindset of suicidal people to want to die before their image is tarnished. die while things are still âgood,â when theyâre still remembered fondly.
to cross the barrier, you need to have a human soul AND a monster soul. if Chara wanted to, they could of killed any of the Dreemurrs and absorbed their soul. But instead, the buttercup plan is a really freaking horrible way to die. Buttercup poisoning is awful. seriously, look up the symptoms. itâs bad. which is also why i believe Chara hated themself so much to put up with that form of death. -then they die, and become part of the Asriel and Chara fusion. (it should be stated they did not know Chara would be conscious.) the plan they agree on is to kill enough humans to break the barrier and free monster-kind, but Chara wants revenge, which is why they want to kill the humans and not negotiate like Toriel suggests Asgore could of done.
-Humans of course freak out at seeing them + their corpse and attack. Asriel realizes Chara was wrong and doesnât want to murder, lets himself be killed. As theyâre dying Chara screams âits kill or be killedâ and both die. -years, possibly a century later depending on what side of the time-skip debate youâre on, Chara awakens in Friskâs body and interacts with You, the player.
-they likely see you as the True Angel, and follow your orders just as Frisk just kinda vibes and does so as well.
-if you keep murdering, frisk distances themself from the world. (implied by what sans says about LV): * LOVE, too, is an  acronym. * It stands for "Level of  Violence." * A way of measuring someone's  capacity to hurt. * The more you kill, the  easier it becomes to  distance yourself. * The more you distance  yourself, the less you  will hurt. * The more easily you  can bring yourself to  hurt others.Â
-Frisk, NOPEing out of the whole thing, just leaves Chara, who feels like they are the literal stats of the universe. THAT is why Chara is only really fully present in no mercy, and only narration otherwise. Friskâs autonomy and how much control they have are directly tied to your LV. Frisk is only named in the pacifist ending because theyâre rewarded with the acknowledgement that theyâre a person.
-The biggest detail is that itâs not Chara who kills, but YOU. Chara is your partner in crime, and only attacks the player when you refuse to ERASE the world and they kill you themself. it is your power and your determination that brought them to this world, and it is through your actions they believe power is the only they must fight for.
-also, both Chara and frisk are influenced by the player and react differently depending on your actions. (the dog food bag is described as âhalf full/half emptyâ depending on your LV, a reference to how one looks at glasses of water to be more optimistic/pessimistic and Frisk will feel good/bad depending on LV when punching the mad dummy in waterfall.) Chara is always just following your lead. theyâre not controlling Frisk, you are. however, they are in control of the choices (as confirmed in no mercy you donât get to choose answers for papyrusâ question and he calls you out on it. personally i like to think each choice answer is from each kid)
anyway yeah that's my overly long analysis of how Charaâs backstory is used to define who they are and then how being revived from the dead, they follow your steps to apply the âkill or be killedâ logic to itâs extreme end.
also, its not like Chara is happy about following your orders either.
they think a plant is judging you. they talk about your sins in the sans fight. they call Undyne a hero despite fighting her. Chara doesnât want to kill Asriel, but once it happens they go ballistic, stabbing repetitively, clearly upset. that then instantly gets them powerful enough to destroy the world, as with how LV is described as distancing yourself and such. Asriel meant the MOST out of everyone, he was their best friend, forever.

This isn't addressed to anyone in particular; I'm just putting it here for my future reference. For the record, I am cis-male, and I use he/him pronouns.
The KFC gang, Napstablook, and Monster Kid use they/them pronouns.
If I told you that I use they/them pronouns, that doesn't mean you get to decide which pronouns I use. If I told you that I'm gender nonbinary, that doesn't mean my gender is up to your interpretation. Sure, we're talking about fictional characters here, but I don't see why the same rules shouldn't apply.
If it isn't canon that Chara is nonbinary, then it also isn't canon that Papyrus is male. Pretty much everybody is in agreement that Papyrus is male, but how do we know? No one ever says the exact phrase "Papyrus is male", but Sans refers to Papyrus as "my brother" and uses he/him pronouns for Papyrus. Because these words are (typically) only used to refer to males, we can infer that Papyrus identifies as male despite never being explicitly told as much. So, if Chara is referred to as Asriel's sibling and uses they/them pronouns and is never referred to with he/him or she/her or gendered terms like brother/sister or son/daughter, then it should be reasonable to conclude that they are nonbinary, even though the game never explicitly says "Chara is nonbinary."
There's also the representation argument, but I don't have anything new to add to that. The gist of it is that nonbinary characters are rarely seen in media unless they're being treated as something strange and foreign, so it's important not to erase some of the most prominent examples of nonbinary characters being treated like normal people. When you misgender these characters, it makes real nonbinary people feel bad. So, don't do it.
I feel like there was something else I was going to say, but I can't remember it. If I think of it, I'll add it as a follow-up to this post.

Introducing: Seeking7 or Seeking!
Commission:Â I don't offer writing commissions at the moment, mostly because I'm not sure how to conduct or present myself in the market. If anyone would like to request a certain fic or short story from me, however, I'd be glad to work out details with them. :)
Social Media: A03:Â https://archiveofourown.org/users/Seeking7 FFnet:Â https://www.fanfiction.net/u/13334645/
Tell us a little bit about you!
Hiya! I'm Seeking7, or Seeking. I was born in Alabama and raised in California to a pair of the most hardworking Egyptian immigrants you've ever met, and the mixture of Arabic and American influence over the course of my life has had a profound influence on the way I look at the world. My favorite subjects are biology and english, and I aspire to become either an EMT or military medic after I graduate. In regards to hobbies (aside from playing copious amounts of Zelda), I love studying American and Ancient Israelite history, and I hope to one day learn ancient Hebrew and Greek so I can read the original biblical manuscripts for myself!
Is there someone who inspires you and your writing?
While my own brain can usually come up with a certain scene or idea that would inspire me to put paper to pen, it's the people I have around me that encourage me to keep writing. The people on FFN and AO3 who comment and leave kudos on my work mean the world to me (shout out to JoSeBach on FFN and MyWritingisMeh on Ao3 for leaving comments/reviews on each chapter of my fic "Mephibosheth"). The LU fans who come to my livewrites on the discord are so ridiculously encouraging and always let me know that my writing can actually be interesting to some people -- a fact that never ceases to astound me. But most credit goes to my younger sister. Even when I don't show her a work because it might be a little bit extreme or intense for her age, she always lets me know that she's sure it's good regardless. Her unconditional, unreasonable support inspires me to be that kind of person to other fic writers!
What got you into writing?
Three books in particular encouraged me to take writing seriously. "Crime and Punishment" was the first in this process, showcasing just how intense, beautiful, and profound a book with actually very little plot can be. The entire book takes place more or less in the head of a man wracked to pieces by guilt, and Dostoevsky's decision to focus on internal instead of external conflict changed the way I looked at literature. "East of Eden" was next. It wasn't just the book's allegorical nature or the Cain and Abel motif that astounded me - Steinbeck's vivid descriptions of everything from the human mind to sunrise in Salinas has had a profound impact on my own writing. I still reference the first few pages when I write! (actually, if you look at my fic "The Most Sincere Kind of Lie," the opening paragraph is heavily inspired by the first page of East of Eden!) Finally, the biblical Book of Job changed the way I look at dialogue and interactions between flawed characters. The whole book is almost written like an ancient screenplay and deals with heavy questions like the meaning of pain and the meaning of meaninglessness without offering direct answers - which inspired me to try and include those questions in my own writing and handle them in a similar, vague, interperative way.
What's your favorite part of the writing process?
After outlining a fic, I usually start out by writing them like a screenplay with all dialogue tags and action notes written off to the side. When sarcastic banter, Â silly, lighthearted interactions, or intense conversations with a deeper meaning behind them start to come together, I can't help but smile. That usually gives the the extra inspirational boost I need to go back and flesh everything out so it becomes a story! (if you struggle with writing dialogue, message me on the discord and I'll be glad to tell you everything I know and send you the multitude of resources I have on the subject)
What's your least favorite part of the writing process?
Vetting works for grammatical mistakes turns writing fics into homework! I can't stand posting something and later reading just to find out that I forgot to capitalize a character's name, or that a comma is missing, or that Ao3 or FFN messed up the page breaks and I have to go back in and fix it. I'm not a perfectionist most of the time, but when I come to writing, I absolutely am.
Whats your favorite type of scene to write?
Intense philosophical debates and serious heart-to-heart conversations are by far my favorite kind of scenes to write, and that's because they're my favorite kind of scenes to observe and read! I always leave them feeling like I've gained something intellectually and emotionally, and it's my constant hope and dream to be able to impart the same kind of introspective thoughtfulness on the reader. Â
What's the hardest for you to write?
Allowing or even plotting for a character to go off the deep end is always such a hard thing to write. Not for them to die, necessarily, but for them to completely lose their morals, priorities, and relationships in search for something selfish or temporary. Writing them making the same mistakes over and over not because they're stupid but because they don't care about the consequences is always hard -- it's like killing off a character and replacing them with the darkest, nastiest version of themselves. Basically, writing the opposite of character development is the opposite of fun. :(
What's your favorite genre to write?
Whatever the hybrid child of angst and fluff is called, that's my baby. I find that a combination of the two can make for a really interesting experience and give me more space to explore different faucets of each character's personality. It's also the perfect breeding ground for some intense, sincere conversations.
What fandoms do you enjoy writing for?
I don't write for a lot of fandoms, just Linked Universe, Undertale, and occasionally LoZ stuff not tied directly to our nine precious boys.
What's the work you are most proud of?
I've only gotten into LU very recently, so at the time of writing this I don't have anything from the fandom that's ready to showcase. I do have some cool Undertale stuff though, at least in my opinion! If you're interested in that, there are two fics I've poured (and am currently pouring) my heart and soul into that I'm extremely proud of. The first one is 'The Reason,' which is just a quick oneshot focused on Grillby being an amazing, hardworking dad, (https://archiveofourown.org/works/24354130) and the second is Mephibosheth,' my multi-chapter pre-canon fic about the lives of Asriel and Chara. '(https://archiveofourown.org/works/23804797)
Is there a specific scene you are particularly proud of?
Going again off the works I referenced earlier, a particular scene in the ninth chapter of 'Mephibosheth' had me patting myself on the back. I can't tell you what it is, though, because it's a massive spoiler. ;)
Is there something you had to work through that forced you to grow as a writer?
At the beginning of my junior year of high school I submitted two works into a competition I was confident I would win. No, not just win, I was sure I would get first place nationally. The competition never had many submissions and I knew that the works I submitted were pretty darn good. As you can probably guess, I didn't win anything. No medal or mention, nothing. I was in shock for a good few days and considering giving up writing completely. Then I realized how stupid I was being for assuming I was entitled to an award, for writing something only for recognition, and for thinking that I should give up on something I love so much just because it didn't supply me with the endorphin rush I thought it would. I made it a goal to improve as much as humanly possible afterwards, and I'm happy to say that I think I'm making progress towards that!
Do you have any fics inspired by real life stories?
Every gremlin-like thing the boys do in my WIP LU fic "The Most Sincere Kind of Lie" (by the time this is up, it'll probably be on Ao3) is based off something I've seen my brother and sister do. They're the embodiment of utter chaos and the manifestation of the primal urge to destroy, so they're great inspiration for Link shenanigans. Also, almost all of the banter in 'Mephibosheth' has taken inspiration from one of three places; conversations I've had with my grandparents, conversations I've had with my siblings, or interviews I've watched online. Inspiration for thought-provoking dialogue has to come somewhere that's not my own brain - there aren't enough brain cells to bear the brunt of that creative burden!
Where do you post your finished works?
I post on FFN and Ao3, both under the alias Seeking7. What's that, you say? You want a link to my profile? Well, who am I to refuse?? (AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/users/Seeking7) (FFN: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/13334645/)

why do you ship chara x asriel? no hate but like why do you think theyd make a good couple
Long reply!!!
To start, i should say that ever since i played Undertale, i never considered Chara and Asriel siblings. I never felt that kind of connection between the two of them.People migh argue with this because when monsters tell Frisk about the story of Asriel and Chara, they say âAsriel and the human child became like siblings.â and âThe King and Queen treated the human like their ownâ.These two sentences and the fact that itâs highly believed that it was Chara who knitted the pink sweater for Asgore saying âMr. Dad Guyâ lead to many people see Asriel and Chara as siblings. And thereâs nothing wrong with that!
But for me, those sentences and the sweater are not proof that they considered each other siblings. Two people can be close like siblings and still develop a romantic relationship later (My best friend in highschool was very close and looked very alike to her (now) boyfriend, people used to tell them they looked like brother and sister. And look at them now, they have been dating for more than 5 years.)
If Chara was the one who created the sweater, maybe they wrote âMr. Dad Guyâ because they saw Asgore as a fatherly figure and Toriel as a motherly figure, because the Dreemurrs gave them everything they never had on the surface. But that doesnât necessarily mean they saw Asgore and Toriel as their dad and mom.
In fact, nowhere in the canon game or said by Toby states that Asgore and Toriel became Charaâs official parents, and that Asriel became Charaâs official brother.Asriel never calls Chara âsibling/brother/sisterâ, only best friend. And when monsters tell their story to Frisk in New Home, they are telling what they saw and thought, so we never really know the true relationship Chara had with Asriel and his parents.
People might also argue using that statement from Gerson where he says that Asgore and Toriel were "embarrassing their children" when they were being lovey dovey in public. But that's no conclusive proof because it makes sense for monsters to see Chara as a child that belongs to the Dreemurrs. Chara technically belonged to the Dreemurrs, they lived with them and probably were considered royalty too. So it's normal for monsters to refer to Chara as the "Dreemurr's kid" or even the "Dreemurr's human". And again, that doesn't mean they were their offical kid. They are just the human that the royal family allowed to live in their house.
Letâs also not forget the fact that Asriel had plenty of opportunities to call Chara his sibling, and yet, that never happened. And when Asgore talked to Frisk about his family, he only refers to Asriel as his child, never Chara.
Now, the reason why i like Chara and Asriel together!
To be honest, my first Undertale ship was Charisk. But the more i played the game, read theories and searched about the characters, my opinion changed, and Chasriel spoke louder. I started liking more the idea of Chara and Asriel growing together and dealing with their own issues, so i started drawing them more. Drawing them more made me love them more!
I think they would make a good couple because since they were kids, their relationship has been very strong (considering that they were extremely close and Asriel says he cares about Chara more than anything else). Also, i donât see Chara as someone who is evil and manipulative. They proved to be mature for their age but we canât forget they are also a child who made mistakes and went through a very bad life on the surface. They are a troubled little kid who needs to work out their problems and see the world in a different light, and sadly they died too soon to be able to do that.
I ship them because i like their chemistry and i like to wonder about how they would be like together and growing up together.Drawing them in several scenarios, developing their personalities, see how they would react to situations, all that is so interesting to think about and draw!!!
In short:Undertale is a game that deals mostly with the playerâs interpretation. People see the events in Undertale differently because we all have different life experiences and points of view. Some people see Undyne as a lesbian, some people see Undyne as bi, and both these interpretations are okay and valid! So if there are people who donât see Chara and Asriel as siblings, thereâs nothing wrong with that. And to me, they are an amazing and very interesting couple to develop!
