1. The Post Office

Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.

4. The Book

You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. 5. The Land Line Telephone

Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes.

6. Music

This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix.

8. The "Things" That You Own

Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider. In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert.

9. Joined Handwriting (Cursive Writing)

Already gone in some schools who no longer teach "joined handwriting" because nearly everything is done now on computers or keyboards of some type (pun not intended)

10. Privacy

If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway.. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits.. "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again and again.

Do Kids Need Preschool?

The child is the father of the man, noted poet William Wordsworth. While that 19th century observation may sound sexist, what Wordsworth meant remains true. What happens in childhood has a huge influence on the man or woman that youngster eventually becomes. Preschool can make a profound difference in the life of a child. The answer to the question, “Do kids need preschool?” is a resounding “Yes!”, but there are equally viable alternatives to traditional preschool.

Preschool is not synonymous with daycare; the key word is “school.” Preschool offers an academic curriculum geared to 3- to 5-year-olds. During preschool, they learn the basic skills to prepare them for further education, along with how to play well with others. With daycare, the emphasis is on care. It is a place for parents to leave their children in a safe environment while they work. Visit potential schools and learn how they operate and trust your gut when it comes to choosing the best alternative for your child.

For some parents, preschool is not an option for their child. That does not mean your child can’t thrive if he or she didn’t go to preschool. There are ways in which to substitute parts of the preschool experience for your youngster. Build language skills by reading to your child every day and encouraging discussion. How to buy Japanese CDs from abroad

The very first Japanese CD I ever purchased was a Pokemon Meowth’s Party mini CD in a cardboard sleeve at New York City’s Kinokuniya bookstore at approximately age 11. The second was T.M.Revolution’s Coordinate at an anime convention he attended as a guest in 2003.

Excellent album of songs I didn’t hear live because Mom wouldn’t let me stay at the convention past the opening act. :(

Fast-forward several years, and I found myself enamored with Jpop girl groups, first Morning Musume soon followed by AKB48. New to the scene and fairly clueless, I relied on generous friends and forum download links to acquire the music I was falling head over heels for. But things have changed a lot since 2009, and it’s easier than ever to get your hands on physical or digital copies of the music you want with the added bonus of supporting the idols you like! It can be hard to know where to start, so I want to look at some of the options I’ve had experience with, and some others I’ve heard good things about.

SHOPPING SITES

CDJapan - When I lived overseas, this was my go-to for access to idol CDs. They offer a bunch of shipping and payment options, a rewards program, song samples and bonuses like preorder and first press rewards (photos, postcards, etc.) The shipping can get a little pricey if you choose the faster and more reliable options, so if you’re ordering several CDs with varying release dates, it’s best to wait until they’re all on sale so they can ship together!

HMV - HMV is generally comparable to CDJapan in selection, preorder bonuses and rewards programs, but with a few big differences. As the partnership between Japan’s convenience store empire Lawson and HMV has strengthened in the past few years, it seems like HMV Japan’s English page has gotten more accommodating to English speakers living in Japan than those overseas. For addresses outside Japan, EMS is the only shipping method and PayPal isn’t accepted. But if you’re an idol fan living in Japan who doesn’t want to decode all-Japanese sites, this is a great resource AND you can receive and use points with your Lawson Ponta rewards card.

Amazon.co.jp - Amazon.co.jp is, embarrassingly, easily my most-used online shopping service here in Japan, but I’ve recently discovered that Amazon Global can be a solid way to buy idol CDs, photobooks and DVDs even from overseas! During my test purchase, it looked like a base shipping rate of ¥950 for 1 CD, with an increase of ¥350 for each additional CD, making it the most competitive shipping rate out there. (Your prices may vary.) The selection is more limited than music-focused sites but it’s worth a look if you’re into mainstream, popular groups.

Mandarake - Secondhand collectibles chain Mandarake has a surprisingly extensive English (and Spanish, Russian, Italian…) site where you can sift through a treasure trove of idol CDs, photos, goods, and who knows what else. Obviously not the most reliable for new releases, but if you’re like me and enjoy searching for old, rare, vintage idol treasures, it’s pretty great. Oh, minus the occasional questionable name or group translation. Why are most Dempagumi.inc items listed as “Propogation.inc?” An unsolved mystery. Shipping is a flat ¥2000 for packages up to 500g and then increases incrementally by weight. (A typical CD is roughly 100g, for reference!)

YesAsia - I’ve known about YesAsia since before I even got into idols, and it’s generally reliable with a pretty extensive music selection, even including older and harder to find CDs. One big difference you’ll find is a markup reflected in item prices themselves, with the trade-off being that it’s pretty easy to qualify for free international standard shipping at orders over $39 (at the time of writing.) They accept PayPal, but all payments are only accepted in US dollars.

PROXY AND OTHER SHOPPING SERVICES

ZenMarket - You may not always be able to find what you’re looking for through foreigner-friendly online shops, but you’ve still got options! Shopping, forwarding and proxy services are all worth a try. ZenMarket is a shopping service with one of the lowest service fees on the market (¥300 per item) that will purchase items for you directly from Japanese online stores and even bid on auctions on your behalf. I admittedly had some difficulty finding what I was looking for due to the autotranslation into English in the built-in marketplace, so I’d recommend using Japanese search terms if you can. ZenMarket will also buy for you from online shops outside of their affiliates, which is great for idol goods sold directly through the agency or record label! Plus, no additional fee to combine multiple orders.

Tenso Japan - If you’ve got a bit of confidence in your ability to navigate Japanese web shops but just lack a Japanese shipping address, a service like Tenso is a huge help. Signing up assigns you a real Japanese address to send your goods to, after which Tenso will forward your packages straight to you when you’re ready. They charge a small fee to combine multiple orders and accept credit cards, PayPal and Alipay.

A Tenso address is also an excellent thing to have if you’re visiting Japan for a short time. Say you come out to make it to your favorite group’s concert, but then find that the only way to get a handshake ticket to meet them after the show is to reserve their upcoming single that comes out weeks after you leave Japan. What do you put in the address field?? You could beg a random stranger to let you use their address, make up something fake and let it be lost to the ether, or make a reasonable choice and have it sent to your Tenso address when it’s released. Much less stressful.

Buyee - Though Tenso is exclusively a shipping service, they also have their own proxy site, Buyee. They’re affiliated with lots of Japanese webshops and have a built-in Yahoo! Auctions browser, and have even developed a browser extension to make shopping on over 150 sites easier. They have a 0% service fee on the big shopping sites Yahoo! Shopping, Rakuten and Amazon.co.jp, and a 5% charge on auctions and other shopping sites. Lots of shipping methods, but not the cheapest options out there.

FromJapan - [grandpa voice] Back in my day, we didn’t have all these new-fangled proxy services and shipping sites with reasonable commission rates and shipping options! We took what we could get, and what we could get was an item that ended up about 3 times its original price after processing and shipping from FromJapan! No but really, FromJapan’s been around for years and has served me well, and though I definitely have memories of them being pretty expensive, it looks like competition has driven them to lower prices! Their current rate is ¥700/order for buyer protection, and ¥300/order for basic forwarding, which is much more reasonable than I remember.

These Falcon shoes that are a size 9.5 Wide in Men’s were actually my second purchase when I bought these on February 17, 2017. This was because I had ordered some Panther II shoes on October 9, 2016 that were not as comfortable. The positives to these Falcon shoes are that they are a definite improvement from the previous shoes that I ordered. Additionally, I currently am blessed to work at a University food service job that has quality work conditions yet also requires good non-stick shoes due to the fact that some of the floors can get a little slippery due to the high demand of food required to be served from the high volume of customers that sometimes come in during the week .These Falcon shoes do the job of helping to keep me slip-free when I take food back to the serving station that I work at andor haul dishes back to the dishroom (where it can sometimes get slippery despite best intentions). These Falcon tennis shoes stay comfortable for my feet both during my work shift and during the timeframe that I wear them walking to and from work.

The positives of the Ghostwriter film; As an aspiring writer it was fascinating to catch a glimpse into how the world of ghostwriting worked when the character of The Ghost (Ewan McGregor) is in talks for his next assignment with former British Prime Minister Adam Peter Bennett Lang (played by Pierce Brosnan). I recognized one of the characters named Rick Ricardelli (Jon Bernthal) who played an agent brokering/negotiating the ghostwriting deal because of his appearance in the 2016 Accountant film. Anyhow, The Ghost character (Ewan McGregor) realizes early on that his ghostwriting gig may end up being more than it initially appears to be when he meets former Prime Minister Adam Peter Bennett Lang, Adam Lang’s wife Ruth Lang (Olivia Williams) and Amelia Bly (Kim Cattrall) a personal assistant of Adam Petter Bennett Lang. A mutual friend of both the former prime minister and his wife died less than three days later and The Ghost (Ewan McGregor) must work under tense conditions to get the memoir completed that he was tasked to do. Of course, there are more plot points as well as actors/actresses involved in a who done it type of film. The caveats; While the film was well-done and a scandalous slant to their personal lives thrown in for realistic measure I was correct in my guess as to who was responsible for the whole debacle. My husband had a different idea on who he thought was responsible for the outcome but he acknowledged that I was correct in my initial who done it assessment but for a different reason than expected. I would have loved for both my husband and I to be surprised by who did it, not just my husband. I also did not like the ending and felt that it could have ended on a more complicated andor open to mystery type of note. Aside from those caveats, this was a brilliant film to watch. It is listed towards the end of the movie that this the Ghostwriter film is based on the book “The Ghost” by Robert Harris. This film stars Brad Pitt (Rusty Ryan in Ocean’s Twelve, The Big Short) as Billy Beane, Jonah Hill as Peter Brand an assistant to Billy Beane (I remember Hill most recently from the War Dogs film and Wolf of Wall Street). I admit that I did not know that Chris Pratt (first Guardians of the Galaxy,upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 2 film etc)played in the film as a baseball player by the name of Scott Hatteberg until after he is introduced as part of the new team that is being assembled. The character of Billy Beane is also shown juggling his professional life while trying to raise his daughter Casey Beane (played by Kerris Dorsey) who he co-parents with his ex-wife Sharon Beane (Robin Wright who also plays in the House of Cards with Kevin Spacey). Of course, there are more actors/actresses who feature in the film and the following are some of the bonus features of the dvd; Blooper-Brad Loses It, Deleted Scenes, Billy Bean Re-Inventing the Game, Moneyball Playing the Game. The end of the film lists that Billy Beane turned down the Red Sox Offer of $12,500,00 and chose to stay in Oakland California. Some of the credits list that Bennet Miller directed the film, Brad Pitt produced Moneyball, and this film is based on the book by Michael Lewis. All of the men and the woman play roles in having to recapture art that had been stolen by some of the Nazi soldiers in World War II. Some of the special features of the film; George Clooney’s Mission and Marshalling the Troops. The film carefully illustrates that one reason why the men were able to put up a good fight in spotting the art had to do with some of the men having extensive expertise in the field of art related to the art they were tasked to recover. I confess that I actually know and I’m very aware (both logically and intuitively) what I want out of my life in various areas. As a result, I am aware that my passion of writing is going to indirectly help in these various areas. However, I am still elated to have come across getting both the kindlebook and audible version of Novice to Expert: 6 Steps to Learn Anything, Increase Your Knowledge, and Master New Skills because of the various resources mentioned. I know that in addition to knowing what I want that I must knock andor go through the right/appropriate doors (metaphorically speaking)and this audible/audiobook gives me an outside the box way of doing so. There are details involved in uncovering the best classes and free resources to uncover in this goal (for example Lynda.com and massive open online courses for the classes, podcasts, joining groups related to the goal). I admit that the only caveat is making sure to consistently schedule in time for my goal and work it around my job that I am blessed to have. For instance, I did find some writing groups online that are close to where my husband and I currently reside through meetup.com (including even one of my facebook friends that are in one of the meetup groups pertaining to writing), However, I know that it is up to me to creatively find one that fits around my employment schedule andor decide to just join an online writing group. Additionally, my goal and intent to improve my writing is not just about becoming a published author but for other reasons I prefer to avoid disclosing for now but have to do with both practical (i.e. the way I express myself online, writing improvement when I enroll in future online courses etc.)and outside the box reasons. As a result, I understand how important is for me to listen to the audible again within the next 24 hours or less to digest the abundance of resources recommended in this guide. I like that there are even mentorship and coaching type of resources for if a person wants to turn to a mentor andor a type of life coach for advice related to their goal/endeavor. Henson,Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer) caught my attention after I saw it featured online on a website that I was on. I decided to take a chance on it to broaden my mind. I am glad to have taken a chance on the audio despite the not so cheap price. One reason; the narrator shares one of the stories where one of the women admitted to have grown up in Hampton Virginia around successful role models who worked an accomplished living in field of education andor the federal government (NASA, National Advisory for Air Committee, mention of the Langley base in Virginia andor the sciences etc.) . This positively shaped her worldview on what was possible. Many of the women who applied at Langley were mentioned to come from accomplished employment backgrounds in education as well as having mathematical talents. There was mentioned that Langley employed multiple women in the field of computers. One of the women, Dorothy Vaughan is mentioned to have worked as a math teacher in Farmville, Virginia. Dorothy Vaughan’s in- laws were considered part of the financial upper-class in the area and mentioned to own a barbershop, a pool hall, and a service station. Their (Vaughan’s in-laws) activities made headlines at times through such media as what was mentioned in the audible version the Norfolk Journal and Guide. However, Vaughan was mentioned to be a modest person and aimed to carefully balance her family life with her career life. Vaughan’s academic accomplishments resulted in her becoming a valedictorian of her high school and attaining a full ride scholarship to Wilberforce University. The audio discussed that Vaughan performed so well to the point that one of the professors recommended her for a graduate program in Howard University. However, economic conditions after her graduation at Wilberforce University influenced Vaughan to hang up her graduate school dreams and pursue a career in teaching instead. She worked as a waitress at a hotel in Richmond Virginia until 1931 when she eventually moved on to her teaching job in Farmville Virginia. The audio shared that around this time Vaughan attracted the romantic attention of one of the area’s most eligible bachelors in Farmville Virginia. Of course, there are much more informative details in this audio. The Hidden Figures audible version by Margot Lee Shetterly, Robin Miles, and Harper Audio is a worthwhile purchase for people of various backgrounds (racial, socio-economic etc.) because of the theme of achieving success despite coming from a challenging environment/background as well as the abundance of historical information. I admit that I do not discuss my own full/paternal background not out of shame but more out of only knowing/being certain of my late biological mother and some of her background as well as showing some respect for both my adoptive father who is still alive and my late adoptive mother.
