Week 2
June 22
We took Saturday pretty easy since we were out pretty late on Friday. We went out to lunch at a cute little cafe called “Casa muamor,” I got a pasta and pesto dish which was alright id give it a 7/10 the sauce to pasta ratio was kind of off and the sauce was really oily. I also ordered an orange juice which like all the other places we have been was delicious. After lunch I went back to the residencia and just hung out with my roommate and some of the guys from here. That was pretty much all we did on Saturday nothing too exciting.
June 23
We woke up to go get brunch and we went to “El Galeon,” the restaurant that's right around here. I got a “Pollo Completo,” sandwich which was huge and it also came with a side of fries. Besides the portion being huge and not being able to finish it was delectable and the restaurant has redeemed itself from that subpar salad I got from there the previous time. I also ordered an orange juice (what's new).
After lunch, some of us went to San Telmo to go to their version of a flea market with a bunch of artisanal things. The Market goes for about five blocks and we went around 2:30 and let me tell you it was PACKED. It was really cool to see all the things people had, my one gift that i want to get for myself is something leather whether that be a jacket or a purse since leather is something Argentina is known for. The only thing that one should be very careful to watch out for pickpockets since there are so many people and usually you can't be distracted looking at cute stuff, one thing I did was make sure my cross body was over my body then i put my jacket over so that my cross body wasn't really exposed.
After walking down the whole market it took us about two hours and then we decided to head back to the residencia. I took a mini nap and then got ready for dinner with our other professor. We all went to this restaurant called “calden del soho.” It was really nice but the prices were pretty expensive (thank god this was one of our program meals hehehe), I got a flank piece of pork. It was actually funny because i had no idea what piece of meat to order and my friend ashlyn who is now a vegetarian was helping me pick lol the irony. Any way when my plate came out my mouth was droooooling, it smelled so good and let me tell you the moment i put that first piece in my mouth i was in heaven.
I also got some of our professors salad which was just a normal “ensalada completa,” we also got some wine to accompany our dinner. I'm not the most knowledgeable on wine but i know i do like red wine. The bottle we got was “ Saint Felicien Malbec,” I had three glasses so I guess you could say I liked it.
For dessert I got a “Flan,” for those that don't know it's basically a custard with caramel. I feel like you can easily mess up flan but thankfully it was made to perfection. We were also celebrating our friends Tyler’s birthday! So happy birthday again tyler! After dinner we went home and got into bed since we had school the next morning.
June 24
Today we had school and I feel no matter how much sleep one gets mondays will always be difficult. Thankfully we only had class till 1:30pm. After class, some of us went to “Che Taco” a place right off of the “Independencia” stop on the blue line. I got some tacos de carne, let me tell you I didn't think I was gonna be satisfied because mexican food in Argentina some people would question it. I was pleasantly surprised! We also got some guac & chips and they were finger licking good, i also got a Jugo de Jamaica (hibiscus) and it was too good to be true.
After lunch we went back to the residencia and I took a little nap (no surprise there) and then got myself ready for dinner. We went to a restaurant in Palermo called “Moriela,” I had the absolute pleasure of seeing my longtime friend Becca and she came with us. We shared a margarita pizza and a bottle of red wine (not sure what kind but it was great).
After dinner some of us went to get some drinks to continue celebrating our friend's birthday. We went to Ragnar the bar we had previously went too, we stayed for about an hour or two and then went on home since we had class the next day.
(my friend Juan says he loves the rain... lol)
June 25
Today after school we went to go get Empanadas from a place down the street. I got one cheese and onion, one chicken and one steak. My favorite one was surprisingly the cheese and onion one.
on the way home we had a mini photo shoot.
And then just before we got home I had to stop by a grocery store to look for an item targeted to kids and see what the nutrition labels looked liked and if they were easy to find. On top of this we had to see what the regulations were compared to the ones in argentina. It was interesting because you see how much power there is in something so small. The labels were so small and kind of hard to find mean while here in the usa everyone knows where they will be placed and legible.
When we finally made it home people were gathering so that we could cut into the cake for tylers birthday! We didn't have plates so people were kinda just eating it out of the cartoon it was a cute bonding moment :’).
For dinner we went to a restaurant here in palermos “EL pinguino de palermo”. I got a milanesa completa, and a side of puree de papa, and wait for it...and to drink i got orange juice. It was a 7.45/10. I've had better milanesa to be honest but it also wasn't the worst ive had.
After dinner we just chilled and then I went to bed.
June 26
Honestly, the best thing to see when you are walking to school at 8:40 am in like forty-degree weather is a dog walker with so many cute dogs. He was really doing the damn thing. He is brave because although these dogs and a lot of the dogs they are well trained but i still wonder if something just set them off and they all go running in one direction he is flyiiiiiiin.
After seeing the dogs before class you just know after class is going to be great. Our other professor who is also on this trip took us to an empanada place and i got 2 cebolla y queso, a carne one and a Pikachu one. Cebolla and queso one had just a bit too much cheese for my liking. The carne one was like a 7.4/10 i feel like it was just good, nothing too crazy.
Also a little tangent about argentine napkins... like what's up. You can't really call these things napkins i think it's deceiving.
Anywaysss after lunch we got back on the subte and got off at plaza italia which is like two blocks from our resi, and walked to the Eva Peron Museum. The only thing to say is *Mind Blown*. If you like history stuff and museums then I highly recommend. She was so impactful on the Argentine history and it's insane how she started out as an actress and went to creating programs to uplift women and children is great. We can each have our own opinions on Peronismo but if this woman had people grieving for 15 days you have to agree that she did something.
For dinner I went to this pay by the weight place and it was great. I got some noodles, fried rice, orange chicken and lettuce & cucumber and put some lime juice and salt over it.
June 27
After school rachel and i went to the travel agency to try to book our trip we took the subte like three different times cause of GPS lol. But on the way we got some McDonalds and i got a “cajita feliz” (happy meal) and it was so cute. The yogurt it came with was so small and it was just great. I also got a toy :) ! Anyway we also stumbled on a cute boutique where rachel got a cute shirt and leather skirt. The owner also gave me some tips for my upcoming vacation with my mom and dad to patagonia at the end of the program. We went walking a couple blocks to the travel agency but they weren’t that much help and it was just no point in going but since we got micky d’s and advice it wasn't that bad.
Here is some candy i got it's their version of laffy taffy but much softer, it's good!
Our friends from the resi took us to this really cute garden we saw some ducks that got a little too close for comfort and they had these statues all over the park so it was really cool.
For dinner we went to this burger place in Palermo “Burger Joint” i got “la Jamaica”. I'm not the biggest fan of burgers but it was so fricken good! It had bacon on it cheese lettuce and honey mustard and more. I got it with a side of fries and pesto-mayo. I was so happy with this meal and i was so mad I had to tap out it's a really big portion i think i definitely would have shared but it just tasted so good.
June 28
After school Rachel and I got a tostada (bread with ham and cheese ) from the cafe right by our resi, “Banova” (okay it's actually an ice cream store but i didn't know that because ive never seen anyone get ice cream from there lol)
We later went to cronico a bar in plaza serrano to watch the argentina - venezuela game (sorry bella lol). I don't know why i got just a salad but it wasn't even all that good. Again for my liking it had a bit too much cheese which I think was provolone so it was just a bit odd for me. I would give it a 7/10.
After the game, my friends and I walked to the bakery our resi and got some pastries. They were delicious. We also played some uno and lets just say it got pretty competitive.
After this I went straight to bed and got excited for our trip to Puerto Iguazu!
June 29
I had to get up at 6am because I hadn't packed for our trip and we had to be out the door by 7am. I somehow packed and got ready without being fully awake. We all piled into a bus and headed for the local airport (AEP). Let me tell you I was soooo excited to know that we'd be going to somewhere semi warm for the weekend. I was even able to pull out my bathing suit for a little but of tanning.
We got to the airport and got checked in and were ready to be on our plane around 8:30 and when we got to the airport we landed at about 10:30.
Once we landed we headed to our hotel St. George. We tried to check in but the rooms wouldn't be ready by 2pm so some of us went to a pay by the weight place by the hotel i got a piece of fish milanesa, mashed potatoes, gnocchi (i now know this is not for me), some yuca and broccoli. It was good not sure really how to describe it but you wouldn't be missing out if you didn't eat there...
After we ate we walked on the main road and stopped to get some ice cream. This is really sweet but if you ever had Mogul candies it tastes just like it.
I was able to sit by the pool and was in love with the warmth.
After we showered we walked to el hito de las 3 fronteras where argentina meets paraguay and brazil. I couldn't believe my eyes. I was so glad we also caught sunset because it just looked beautiful.
I was starting to get hungry and knew it was going to be at least another 30 min until we got back to the hotel because we went walking, so i got some popcorn and if you know my grandma or me you know we love salt. This popcorn was heaven.
So we still had another hour before dinner so we decided to stop by this mexican restaurant called “Tacopado”. My friend Blue and I split a taco combo that came with one carne taco, one pollo taco, nachos and papas aztecas that had chimichurri and mayanose on it. Pretty delish. I was pretty satisfied for mexican food in argentina (that was prepared by argentinians).
After our “appetizers” we still had dinner at the hotel. I was not too hungry so i got a caesar salad. Eh it was good besides those four huge pieces of cheese on top. Rachel and I shared a brownie and ice cream with caramel. I loved the top of the brownie because it was a pool of caramel and that's the only part I really ate lol.
After this I went to bed because we had a long day ahead of us.
I know this post is a week late but I’ve been doing a lot of traveling so I did not have my laptop with me. Hope you enjoyed the post!
Con amor,
T.L.

Brisbane’s best kid-friendly cafes and restaurants
You’ve got one or a bunch of rowdy kids. You’re on edge after de-crusting your billionth sandwich and can’t bring yourself to butter another slice of bread. Why not take the troupe out to one of Brisbane’s best kid-friendly cafes and restaurants so someone else has the pleasure of creating kid-approved cuisine? Not to mention dealing with the post-apocalyptic level clean-up after your clan is finished.
If you’re looking for cafes with play nooks to keep the little ones busy while you take a breather, plus kids’ menus that delight even the trickiest junior MasterChef judge, here’s our round-up of the top cafes and restaurants in Brisbane to dine out with the family.
Miss Bliss Whole Foods Kitchen, West End
Order at the counter and head straight to the back to let the kids loose in the astroturfed ‘backyard’ at one of the best kid-friendly cafes in West End. There’s a table for littlies with toys aplenty and tonnes of comfy bench space for the older kids.
This place is known for its organic goodness (the menu is also loaded with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options), so adventurous children might like the mini mango chia pudding with fresh fruit from the Baby Bliss menu. They also stock old-school favourites here like soft-boiled eggs with soldiers and avo to keep everyone happy.
For adults, it’s all about the bowls on the all-day menu. Try the caramel crunch acai bowl or crispy skin salmon poke bowl and wash it down with a summer greens smoothie.
Where: 85 Vulture St, West End. Open: Weekdays from 6:30am ’til 3:30pm, Saturday and Sunday from 7am ’til 3pm.
Smug Fig Cafe, East Brisbane
Open for brekkie and lunch, the Smug Fig is a cute kid-friendly cafe inside a garden nursery. The kids’ menu is full of popular picks like waffles, bacon and eggs, and toasted banana bread with ice-cream, as well as shakes, juice and babycinos.
Explore the nursery with the kids or sit towards the back of the cafe to draw on the chalkboard, play with the toys and read the books in the kids’ nook.
Parents will love the Smug Fig’s out-there all-day brunch menu featuring pumpkin and corn fritters, breakfast tots with Spanish chorizo or the jerk chicken burger. Even the crushed avo is next level, served on organic sourdough with pumpkin hummus, semi-dried tomato and dukkah. Be sure to ask what the French toast special of the day is – you might end up with an epic Bubble-O-Bill inspired artwork that tastes as good as it looks.
Where: 999 Stanley St East, East Brisbane. Open: Monday to Saturday from 7am ’til 3pm, Sundays from 8am til 3pm.
Monkey Bar Cafe, Greenslopes
This cafe is besties with its next-door neighbour, aka a huge playground, which makes it a perfect spot for sunny days. Your mini-mes will also love brekkie menu items like the mini pancake stack or sourdough toast with Vegemite and a poached egg.
Lunch for the little ones is sorted with mini bolognese or crumbed chicken and chips; while parents can gorge on the loaded veggie fritters or spicy bruschetta from the all-day breakfast menu. Everyone in the fam can up their antioxidant or dairy intake with a milkshake or smoothie, like the ice-cold berry concoction.
Where: 98 Victoria Terrace, Greenslopes. Open: Monday to Friday from 6:30am ’til 1:30pm, Saturday and Sunday from 6:30am ’til 1:30pm.
Carport Cafe, Cannon Hill
You’d be forgiven for driving by this hidden kid-heaven without noticing it. Keep an eye out for the colourful sign at the front, run to the counter and bag a spot near the kids’ table and leafy garden out the back.
You’ll find tonnes of books, chalk, toys and even a doll’s house to keep your little people busy while you try a sweet treat or something more serious from the Carport Cafe menu. The brekkie stack is your friend if you’re into honey-roasted pumpkin, spinach, grilled tomato and halloumi. After all, life is better with halloumi.
If you’re visiting around lunchtime, try the chicken burger or feta, avocado, walnuts and roasted pumpkin salad. The kids’ menu has faves like eggs or house-made beans on toast and cheese toasties. For chilled drinks, try Carport’s cold-pressed juices (we recommend the lychee kiss), smoothies and milkshakes.
As well as being one of the best kid-friendly cafes around, Carport is dog-friendly too.
Where: 3 Pickwick St, Cannon Hill. Open: Daily from 6:30am ’til 2pm.
Chapter IV, Paddington
Chapter IV is the perfect family-friendly cafe with an epic all-day brekkie menu and a gated play area. Mums and dads will love the breakfast options, from soft shell crab eggs bennie to coconut waffles with Nutella brownie ice-cream, brekky reuben, and crispy potato and cheddar hash cakes. *wipes drool*
The kids can enjoy a cheesy grin toastie, scrambled eggs, zoo-friend pancakes or dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets. Little ones can also go for a babycino or milkshake (regular flavours like vanilla and chocolate are on offer, as well as hazelnut and frosted mint).

Little and big people will love the acai bowls, ‘nicecream’ and raw treats. Aside from the colourful food and drinks on offer at this healthy hotspot, kids will dig the peekaboo opportunities in the tee-pee, cubby to climb on, books, board games and toys.
Bonus: If you need to stock up on bananas and other staples, you can also buy your fruit and veg here, too.
Where: 473 South Pine Road, Everton Park. Open: Daily from 6am ’til 10pm.
Willow & Spoon, Wilston
The outdoor kids’ play area at Willow & Spoon is more like a family backyard, decked out with a chalkboard, play kitchen, games and toys that’s all in full view of the covered dining area. Oh, and it’s pet-friendly too!
Kids can keep things simple for both breakfast and lunch with cheese and Vegemite or Nutella toasties, muesli with honey milk, or fruit and marshmallow kebabs. The kids’ beverage options include cloudy apple or orange juice; or for something of the dairy persuasion, a babycino or kids-sized milkshake.
Parents can nibble on the extensive brunch menu which ranges from brioche French toast with peanut and chocolate Nutella butter to poached eggs with pulled beef and smoked cheese sauce. Fancy!

Plum Tucker, Red Hill
Think you know avo on toast? Think again. Plum Tucker serves up two options for this staple brekky dish: go simple with black sesame and lemon, or indulge in the sweet potato and red harissa variation served with miso dressed greens and dukkah.
There’s a great kids’ area upstairs, which is also available for kids’ parties. On the menu are old faithfuls like gooey eggs with soldiers, cheese on toast, and bacon and egg rolls, plus babycinos (complete with sprinkles and marshmallows), AJ and OJ, milkshakes and smoothies.
Where: 5 Enoggera Terrace, Red Hill. Open: Daily from 6am ’til 2pm.
The Soul Pantry Kitchen, Stafford
The Soul Pantry Kitchen is a shopping hub for locally-sourced food, plants and homewares. And it’s kid-friendly to boot. The café has loads of vegetarian and gluten-free breakfast and lunch options – think quiches or a nourish bowl for parents, and seasonal fruit salad or avocado on toast for the little ones.
The large warehouse space has a workshop out the back and a great indoor area for kids to play while you’re getting caffeinated for the day. During school holidays, kids can even learn about plant selection, design and care at the Kids Adventure Garden Workshops.
Where: 31 Wolverhampton St, Stafford. Open: Tuesday to Friday from 8am ’til 4pm, Saturday from 8am ’til 2pm.
Tiddlywinks Dance and Play Cafe, Nundah
Present and future dance mums and dads, warm up your jazz hands! If your little ones like to get their groove on and shake it all about, head to Tiddlywinks in Nundah. More of an indoor play centre than a specialist café, Tiddlywinks features a three-storey playground and toddler area, plus daily disco for kids (parents can share their moves as well for a dose of huffy puffy).
To refuel, kids can chow down on healthy freshly-prepared meals and fruit from the cafe (gluten-free, vegan and nut-free options available), while parents can sip on coffee.

Where: 144 Samford Road, Ferny Hills. Open: Monday to Saturday from 9am ’til 12pm.

Meet the Fyre Fest Attendee Who Live-Tweeted the Island Disaster
Meet the Fyre Fest Attendee Who Live-Tweeted the Island Disaster
Fyre Festival attendees were promised paradise on a private island, only to arrive in the Exumas, Bahamas, on Thursday (April 27) to find a half-finished festival site, uninhabitable accommodations and hundreds of fans pleading to get out.
The images of what was promised and what was actually delivered have dominated coverage of the failed festival, with many in the media turning to a Twitter feed run by a 32-year-old blogger named Seth Crossno from Raleigh, N.C., who uses the pen name William N. Finley IV. Crossno’s photos on Instagram and Twitter were some of the most widely shared images from Fyre Festival, giving the rest of the world a peak at the train-wreck festival that vastly under-delivered and was eventually canceled.
Billboard tracked down Crossno to discuss his experience on Exumas and learned how his images and social media posts resonated with hundreds of thousands of people watching from afar.
Why did you decide to attend Fyre Festival?
I needed a vacation. I haven’t been on one in a year and thought, ‘Cool, look at all this stuff I get to do at Fyre Festival.’ I think of myself as an influencer through my blog, which started out as a satire on the whole Raleigh scene. But once I landed at Exumas and saw the festival site, I was like, ‘All right, there’s no satire here. This is all real.’ So, I just started reporting what I was seeing. Then the media started reaching out, like rapid fire. I was just like, ‘Yeah, you can use this.’ I didn’t think my photos and tweets would pop up on the front page of every single site covering Fyre.
This sums up Fyre Festival. #fyre #fyrefestival #fyrefest pic.twitter.com/x4xcFBL8Yg
— William N. Finley IV (@WNFIV) April 28, 2017
Your photos were everywhere. At times it seemed like you were the only one there posting images.
That’s what I don’t understand. When we first got there, I asked myself, ‘Am I the only one who had higher expectations for this event?’ but it wasn’t long before my friend turned to me and said, ‘We’re getting off this f—ing island.’ I was like, ‘No, let’s give it an hour or two’ before admitting, ‘Okay, this really is terrible.’ Why did nobody else tweet out that this was such a shit hole? I don’t know.
Did you feel a sense of responsibility to report what was happening on the ground?
Yes, eventually, after I realized that a lot of my tweets were getting picked up by the outside media.
But everyone was reporting the wrong name for you since your account has you listed as William N Finley IV.
Well, that’s the thing. I use that account for satire, but this was real and I didn’t have time to explain that because so many people were following me.
Your Periscope video has now been viewed over 175,000 times. Were you surprised that many people were tuning in?
Not really. People love a train wreck, especially if they’re people you both envy and want to be given a comeuppance. There was a lot of misinformation. It wasn’t $12,000 a ticket like many in the media were saying. I paid $4,000 — the VIP Artist Pass I purchased was $2,700 and I owed my buddy another $1,300 for my share of the $8,000 VIP villa we were supposed to be staying in. Yeah, that’s a lot of money, but that’s what I thought it would cost to spend four nights in the Bahamas hanging out with A-list celebrities. I was supposed to be flown in on a private plane with Wolfgang Puck making me omelets for breakfast. For $4,000, that’s pretty damn cheap.
Did they have a VIP villa ready for you when you arrived?
No, and when we landed we could tell immediately we weren’t on a private island. We were on just a part of a larger island. It felt like a rock quarry or something. And you pull in and there’s just cars everywhere and trucks and people, and you just come up on all these disaster relief tents everywhere. We thought, ‘What the hell is this?’ And then, they dropped us off right in the middle of this crowd. And there’s just a huge line, and nobody’s telling you anything. And you’re standing in line, and that Billy McFarland guy is standing on a table trying to answer questions. But nobody can hear him. He looked like an idiot standing on this table, telling the people who rented villas to just go grab a tent. Any tent. And then people started running to the tents, grabbing up tents that had been assigned to someone else. It seemed like no one was in charge.
At what point did you just decide to get out and head to the airport?
Around 11 p.m. We had been kicked out of multiple tents and never actually shown the location of our VIP villa. We headed to the airport having no idea if it was actually open. Thankfully it was. We got there at 11:30, and the flight came in at 1:30 in the morning. And we got on and they were manually writing names and passport numbers down, but the manifest wasn’t checking up with the head count because a couple of people were still drunk and not listening for their names to be called. So they made us all get off the plane and get back on, checking us one by one. By that time, we sat on the plane again for another couple hours and then we had to deboard again because the crew needed a break. By this point, we’re now locked inside the airport because people kept walking outside to smoke, and because the place was so small, accidentally walking on the runway. So they put a chain and bolt lock on the door, and it go so hot that this guy passed out. Then we finally got a plane at 7:30 or 8:30. Around like 9:30 or 10:00 we got on, took off, and finally got in about 11:00.
At one point while you were still on the island you tweeted out a picture of a notepad that appeared to belong to one of the festival organizers. Where did you find that?
Billy McFarland was standing on this table to try and tell people what was going on and the notepad was on that table, and then it fell on the ground. I took a bunch of pictures of the notepad — what I didn’t show were pages with hundreds and hundreds of names, all hand-written.
Also, we found a notebook from one of the Fyre Fest planners on the ground. It is amazing. #fyrefestival #fyre pic.twitter.com/jFib0nO2RW
— William N. Finley IV (@WNFIV) April 28, 2017
Yesterday Ja Rule issued a statement promising fans that Fyre Festival was not a scam. What did you think when you heard that?
I never thought it was a scam — that implies there was some intent to defraud. I honestly think it’s a mix of total incompetence and the people putting it on really sucking at their jobs. But I will say there was a lot of things that changed as the event approached. At first it was supposed to be on a private island, but then it was moved to a section of an island next to a Sandals resort. I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt, probably to subconsciously talk myself into still going. I mean I was in $4,000 on this thing.
One of the most famous photos to come out Fyre was a picture of a sandwich with just bread, cheese and lettuce. Was there other food?
Yeah — there was a tent with sandwiches and another section had dinner with barbecued chicken, pasta salad and a bread roll. It wasn’t that bad.
The dinner that @fyrefestival promised us was catered by Steven Starr is literally bread, cheese, and salad with dressing. #fyrefestival pic.twitter.com/I8d0UlSNbd
— Tr3vor (@trev4president) April 28, 2017
So the picture was a misrepresentation?
Well, that was one of the options. Cheese sandwich. There was no menu. You just walked up to a table in a tent and they handed you food and then pointed you to a big basket of chips and some apples and oranges. It felt like a summer camp mess hall. Most of the people working the kitchens and food were from the Bahamas and they were extremely nice considering the terrible situation.
Did any part of the festival site feel like a tropical paradise?
No. Not really. It was mostly gravel and grass. There was some sand in front of the stage, but they just dumped it here to make it feel like the beach. But the rest of the island was gravel, dirt and mud. Thank God it didn’t start raining.
Any regrets?
I’m not sure, but I do know I convinced a lot of people not to show up. So many people reached out on Instagram and Twitter asking about the festival. I told them, ‘I wouldn’t come to this. It’s not what you think it is.’ And a lot of people said ‘Thanks a lot, I’m canceling my tickets.’ I was just happy that no one else would have to go through this.
