Procreate Dreams
I've been playing around in Procreate Dreams for about a week or so now, and I think I've got enough of a handle on the software to offer a fair review! If you're interested in hearing my thoughts, click the read-more below.
A little context before we get started; I have two degrees in animation, but they're both in 3D. My personal specialty is tech and articulation/rigging, but I think my background puts me in a unique position with Procreate Dreams; I know all of the theory behind animation, but I'm not going into Procreate Dreams and comparing it to a professional-grade software I generally prefer to use (like Toon Boom Harmony, for example).
So, let's get into it!
First Impressions
I hated it. I opened the software, it crashed. I couldn't figure out how to enable onion skins. I couldn't increase or decrease the exposure of my frames. I couldn't figure out how to swap to the eraser. I was confused, I was frustrated, and then I realized that I was expecting to jump in and animate without taking the time to learn the software first.
Once I stopped trying to strong-arm it and started looking up documentation, things got a little easier.
Re-Thinking My Approach
Procreate Dreams isn't comparable to any other animation software I've used before. The UI is different, there's a focus on gesture over buttons, and everything about it is meant to be minimalistic. None of this reflects poorly on the program, in my opinion. It's different. You can't go to Procreate Dreams and get mad at it for not being like the other software out there in terms of how it's used. In fact, I think one area of Dreams that should be applauded is the sheer ambition on display. It's a hybrid of traditional frame-by-frame animation and offers a slimmed down version of some of After Effects' most useful compositing & motion graphics tools. That's just plain cool.
The Good
For those of you who've used Procreate Dreams, you may find it's a little... difficult to see all the good it has to offer through the muddied waters it's launch-day bugs kicked up, but under all the grime, there's a little bit of gold.
Dreams is a one time, $20 USD purchase. That's huge in terms of affordability and accessibility in the software market right now.
The "Perform" option is great, and I think we'll see the longer that it's out, the more creative people are going to get in using it. I've already seen people create gorgeous parallax on their illustrations.
Simple compatibility with Procreate is a huge win. I'm finding my pipeline uses both software together.
The UI is a mixed bag overall, but I find the ability to move between flipnote mode and timeline mode to be great. It keeps the screen free, but I can still access the features I need while doing frame-by-frame.
The move/filters option is a great way to add a little compositing magic to your work.
The Bad
The "bad" here exclusively covers issues with the software as intended. Bugs will be covered under "The Ugly" below.
The lack of a lasso tool is a huge setback. I've seen people saying that it doesn't make sense not to have that feature at launch, especially when it's part of Procreate, but I understand why it may have been difficult to implement in conjunction with the move/perform/warp options. If you save a warp on top of an illustration, then cut and move part of the drawing, how is the warp/local translation data applied to that image? Does the pixel remember it's movement, or is it applied on top of the drawing? There's a lot to consider.
Similarly, the "reference" tool in Procreate would be an excellent tool to add color to layers beneath current layers. "Add Reference Track" would be great! That said, I think this conflicts with the move/warp tools like the above.
The timeline is a time sink. I should be able to adjust the exposure of my frames easily and consistently. As of right now, I have an 80-20 shot of selecting my layer or grabbing the handle for exposure. A small button on the edge of each frame (like a dot) would improve this considerably.
As far as I can tell, you can't mask a group onto another group.
No double-tap on the Apple Pencil 2 to swap to the eraser. This one I'm not sure about; it runs in Procreate, it seems simple to implement here... though it'd be great to see it customizable.
The Ugly
This includes bugs and other issues that are separate from the features (or lack thereof) of Procreate Dreams.
Crashes are frequent. I haven't used the software reliably during any of my sessions so far, but Dreams' autosave feature is extremely strong and very forgiving, so I have lost no work.
My pen pressure become erratic at times, necessitating a restart of the software.
Sometimes my pen will stop working, though other features in the app will continue to run.
The good news is, I think that Dreams is overall a huge win for artists and animators worldwide. Everything that's not working about Dreams will hopefully be resolved in future updates. I'd encourage anyone who wants to try animating for the first time to pick it up-- with the understanding it might take some time to get used to/master.

Maybe you have some drawing tips for beginners?
Your style is incredibly beautiful and it just inspires this thing inside me to grab my iPad and start drawing but unfortunately I have no idea where to even begin
Or maybe you have some recs where to look to learn how to draw stuff?
But I understand completely that it’s your thing and artists should never feel pressured to share all their techniques and secrets, you worked hard on it!
I just really really love your art to the point where I just look at it for 30 minutes straight with this big feeling in my chest
<3
ah it was never about being secretive, i'm pretty open about my drawing process since gatekeeping knowledge is a big pet peeve of mine. It was more like,, laziness because writing a cohesive and helpful drawing tutorial is pretty difficult and i wouldn't even know where to start; i'm afraid i'll get maybe too technical and what have you.
As for tips for beginners, i've shared plenty on my couriouscat so you can scroll through the answers there, i also have some drawing timelapses on my twitter account as well (albeit you'll have to scroll a little)
I'm very flattered you feel that way about my art, it really means a lot to me and i'm glad to have inspired you to draw as well that's awesome and i wish you best of luck!
I actually don't know how different drawing on an iPad is compared to a graphic tablet+desktop, so I am actually pretty clueless in that regard. I think Procreate is the most used digital art app for iPad so you can start by getting it and familiarizing yourself with the UI. I think this step is often overlooked. The brushes and the chosen program can make or break the drawing experience. If you simply find yourself not enjoying Procreate, experiment with other apps or maybe try switching to a graphic tablet, maybe that feels better and is more suited to your tastes.
To be completely honest, one "bad" piece of advice that i should probably keep to myself is to draw something you actually enjoy: fanart, Pretty Girl Portrait(tm), your cat, landscapes etc even if it's above your skill level (becoming obsessed/ fixated on some character from a piece of media also works wonders i'm just gonna throw that out there). The main point is to actually care about your chosen subject in order to get inspired and to have that inner desire of "doing them justice" aka drawing them well. The traditional art learning route probably involves studying the fundamentals, shading spheres and cones and simple 3D forms blablbablah which. Yeah ! sure that's probably better advice but i'm telling you what will make you want to keep going and not get discouraged after a few failed attempts.
As for the drawing subject, I highly recommend having photo references to guide you.. you always need refs it's a recurring thing. My fastest artworks are the ones where I have the right references. the less references the more difficult it is to draw something
As a beginner it is also a good practice to draw OVER your photo reference to get the proportions right ( i'm not talking about literally tracing the contour of a face or limb ( just an example ), but moreso identifying the Main shape which makes up that body part and observe how long is it in respect to the other components, how does it connect to the other parts etc - big difference. Tracing won't help you in the long run).
Another thing you can do is to study your favourite artists and see how They tackle whatever it is that you like in their work. how do they simplify facial features? what about anatomy? color/ light etc and kinda reverse engineer your way through their process. ( but i highly recommend to just keep these practice sketches to yourself, and to not share them on social media- unless you get the artist's permission)
This is how i got into drawing and what i did back then, again, for more technical hands-on information i did answer similar CCs before so with a little bit of stalking you'll find them in no time
I wanna finish this with some resources that helped me:
>youtube guys - sinix, ahmed aldoori, marco bucci, and also just speedpaints in general i highly recommend watching those
>for simplified anatomy i found @/ taco1704 's ref sheets to be very helpful but ........... I'm pretty dry here i just look up refs on Pinterest tbvh
speaking of, here's my pinterest i have a bunch of art related boards board cool stuff overall maybe they can help guide you towards some direction or inspire you in some way idk
ok i kinda suck in the resource department listeN. im starving too just.................. watch youtube speedpaints ok
SORRY IT'S SO LONGGGBGGG i hope it was at least a bit helpful? this was all over the place... I'll try to come up with a tutorial as well but i really gotta be careful with how i go about it. I'll leave you with this for the time being. Again, thank you a lot for the kind words, I really am very grateful and touched esp by that last part about staring with the big feeling stuff eeeeeeeeeeeeee really wow T T that's so lovely and a big compliment thanks ty ly

Affordances
Instapoll question after the first class in Design Foundations.
What useful affordances have you noticed over the weekend?
Student Responses (31)
A highly visible "Add to cart" button.
I have noticed the way that my new computer's ports light up when it is dark in order to help you see where to plug in the charger and other additions. I have also noticed how Cortana responds to your voice by calling her name as well as pressing the microphone icon to get the same reaction from her which allows two ways to get your information.
When I straightened my hair, I saw that the light turned green when the flat iron was hot enough and finished warming up.
The keyboard on my computer with their function on the keys. The little bowls in Styrofoam containers that show that sides go in the smaller ones.
I noticed the affordances of the handles on the fridge, the ridges on the keyboard, the conveniently placed analog sticks on a game controller that rests perfectly under my thumbs, and the adjustable straps on my backpack that fit to my liking.
My drawing tablet has little icons on the buttons, and they match up with Photoshop functions on purpose.
The street signs on my drive to the grocery store.
the home button on my iphone 6 and the setting knob on the fan that cools off my computer
Over the weekend, I was using my computer a lot for homework and checking canvas. I noticed that I know my computer is charging only when the plug has a blue light on, which I didn't have on my old computer so it's useful in making sure it's charging. Another affordance I noticed was how the inbox in canvas has numbers when a message is waiting to be read to bring attention to the new message.
My new wireless keyboard has a button that when pressed will let you know how much battery it has left as well as a small light that glows green to yellow to red in order to let you know. The button has a little battery icon so you automatically know what it does and since we associate the colors red green and yellow with stop, go, and yield because of traffic lights we instrincly know that if the light is green, the keyboard has a good amount of charge and is good to go.
I found a button to create multiple instances of an application on my Ipad.
My washer and dryer have a lot more options than the one I'm used to at home. However, it's easy to maneuver because it has different cycles sectioned off and color coded.
I keep noticing interesting UI elements in various games. For instance, items that you can pick up are typically outlined so you know they are interactable.
I noticed that the my laptop had a button on it that just had the symbol of the bran don it, I figured that it brought up the menu that another thong you can click on screen would pop up, and sure enough it did.
I've found even more affordances for things like zoom and discord! I found that in discord it has a search area where you can look for a gif that matches what the discussion is about. I also found in zoom there is a way to change your name and profile picture.
the ux design on destiny 2 when I was playing it over the weekend.
Cars that can move under their own power so I can get food instead of fridge scraps, we haven't gotten groceries in a while.
The option to screen share from smaller devices to larger screens (like tv or monitors) it makes discussing in larger groups easier and a more seamless experience. It really helps people stay focused and engaged with the topic.
While sketching over the weekend, looking at pens and pencils made me realize that even their simple designs contain some pretty universal affordances. Their size and shape are specifically designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. Some pens also have slimmer mid-sections that lets users know where to grip it.
One thing that's kind of the opposite is that I noticed drawers that don't have any sort of handle or indication of how to open them can be confusing. I was at my aunt's house and there were no handles on the kitchen drawers so I assumed it would still just open the same way, by pulling. But the way they opened was by touching them! You just pressed it and it opened by itself. So it made me appreciate handles on drawers and cupboards (the cabinets open the same way at her house).
The direction doors open can make or break an entry way. Some enable free movement and utilization of a space, others become a hindrance and limit movement.
I have an extra pillow on my bed that I had only been using for decoration... but my back has started to hurt recently because the chair in my dorm room is made of hardwood. So, I used the affordance of the pillow and put it behind my back to use as a backrest, so it's not pressed up against a hard surface and hurting it. I have also noticed a new feature on my computer, an affordance where I can control the temperature of the computer and keep it cool to the touch by setting the fan speed to whatever I want it to be.
I like that my chairs can afford to be sat. I like that my hammock can afford to sustain me because it looks comfortable and safe enough to lay in. I just bought a new mouse, and it can afford to be clicked on in more than two places and I can tell because the buttons were designed to be obvious. Door knobs can afford to be twisted to open a door. Its like features that tell the user what it can be used for or how it is used.
Multiple tools on procreate that are very well designed and the simple layout makes things easier for new users
A sketchbook that has spiral binding provides an affordance, being easier to draw in the corners than a normal one. A computer has the affordance of automatically unlocking as soon as you open it if it was just recently closed.
In zoom, I've noticed that the view of everyone's screens/cameras shifts to fit the situation. This is a useful affordance because it automatically prioritizes the screens that are in focus whether that be the screen shared windows, the speaker's face, or just rearranging the people in the zoom call with the people with cameras on in the first slide and people with no camera on in the back slides. The user assumes that the viewing of important content will be prioritized by zoom and the affordance of maneuvering screens in a comprehensible way accomplishes that.
I've started seeing affordances everywhere! Even the simple design of a mug tells the user so much. There's an opening to hold liquid, and a handle to hold to drink it. For frying pans, there's a handle telling you to not touch the hot metal on the stove. Hand sanitizers have pumps that tell you to push on it to get the liquid out. Just in everyday life, there's so many affordances to help people navigate life.
I got a new paper like screen protector for my iPad that makes it feel like you’re writing on paper, I noticed new affordances on canvas when I used different sections to access my live government class on canvas, and I was using apple CarPlay in my car to use the gps.
Scissors and knives
The affordances of my phone and the accessories on it. After Mr. Knut mentions chairs I noticed my chairs afford aces. For example the level adjuster
I went to the pool and I was confused about how to get in, but there was a sign on the gate that said "pull".

Parakeet’s Wonderful Plumage of Icons, Emojis & More
Most designers are generalists, making small and large designs across various mediums—logos, business cards, brochures, letterhead, posters, signage, websites, apps, etc. You name it, a designer can do it. Getting to make so many different things for so many different platforms is one of the best parts of the job. But there’s something to be said for doing one thing and doing that one thing well. The duo behind Portland-based design studio Parakeet, have done just that, carving out a niche by making the little things that companies need. Those little things are mostly icons, but also include logos, emojis, and stickers for apps and messaging.
Alexa Grafera and Louie Mantia began formally working together in 2015, and their Portland, Ore., studio has been going strong ever since. Clients include the likes of Target and Nike, among other high-profile brands. Although the icons Grafera and Mantia design might be small-scale, the two have made a big impact in the design world.

Carving Out a Niche
Their road to becoming icon designers started early in their lives. Mantia got his first Mac around 2004 to 2005 and he fell in love with the idea of creating his own icons to customize the Finder, folders and user interface. So he did just that, and in the process taught himself Photoshop. Grafera has always loved drawing, and during her early career as a designer, she worked as a generalist doing UI and icon designs. She also used Photoshop very early on, as far back as version 5.5.
The Parakeet Primaries Stock Icon Pack
Having worked with Photoshop for so long, Grafera has become proficient at creating custom designs from scratch. She defines her approach to icon design as less about photorealism and more about illustration, creating what she calls an idealized look and feel using multiple visual resources. She collects a lot of reference images of whatever subject she’s drawing and finds commonalities among images. From there, she assesses what things are essential to communicate that object. If it’s not essential, it’s left out. She sees this as especially important when making small design objects. Designer Clint Schultz, who is familiar with their work, appreciates the approach they take. “What they are doing is very difficult, but they are brilliant, balancing the minimal or maximum information that is needed to translate the design to a large audience.” With icon design, what you leave out is just as important—or more important—than what you leave in. “You have to find the essentials,” says Grafera.
Perfecting the Form
Over time, Photoshop was an essential tool for this work, but apps have come a long way since, and these days she uses Procreate as her tool of choice. Grafera starts on an iPad Pro and then moves to an iMac for clean-up, refinement, and finishing. But Procreate works just as well for sketching ideas early on. For Mantia, his own style is an approach that focuses on shapes, boiling it down to the positive and negative, the form and counterform.
Icons for Disney’s Magic Passport app
In many cases, the work Mantia and Grafera produce are the result of hours of drawing, planning, refinement, and finishing. And in the end, it’s not merely one or one dozen icons created, but rather, hundreds and hundreds. Mantia’s work on the Magic Passport app for Disney has approximately 500-600 icons with a single style used throughout the entire icon family. Creating unity and variety among so many different icons—or glyphs, as Mantia calls them—is akin to what a type designer does. So it’s no wonder that Mantia has found type design appealing and even has a few typeface designs to his credit. Icon design and type design both require attention to detail, and the ability to relate form and counterform, creating unity and variety among a myriad of shapes, all with one common purpose: to communicate. Schultz calls this “a framework to enhance understanding.” He sees their work communicating ideas and messages, no matter how simple or complex.
Little Big Things
When he’s not designing type or icons, Mantia stays busy doing what he loves most. “After designing icons for my clients, I like to kick back and design icons for myself.” Grafera shares this insatiable appetite to create, and if there’s one thing that she takes pleasure in, it’s painting and illustrating food—so it’s no wonder that she considers the June Oven project a dream job since she was hired to paint food all day.
Icons for the June Intelligent Oven.
The icons for June Oven have an illustrative quality, with elements rendered in an idealized fashion. You feel like you can reach out and touch them. But that illustrative look and feel is not as widely used these days. There was a time when skeuomorphism was rampant, with two-dimensional objects looking like the real thing. Take for instance a note-taking app with yellowish ruled paper you type on—and a casual script typeface to make your typed notes look handwritten; a book app that houses its titles on a bookshelf; an audio app that’s interface resembles a mixing board you might find at a 1980s radio station. This design aesthetic was popular years ago during the iPhone’s early days, but everything has since become smoothed out and geometric, perhaps a result of Google’s Material Design.
Snacks, from Parakeet’s iMessage sticker pack
Who knows. Perhaps we will see skeuomorphism return when augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) take off. But until then, things will (mostly) continue to appear flat, as Grafera quickly points out, especially when it comes to icon design and icon aesthetics. But there is one place where you can still get non-flat design: emoji. Grafera sees emoji as the last remaining outlet for skeuomorphic, illustrative icon and two-dimensional design. She’s adored emoji since she began using them in 2014, so much so that she’s been making her own emoji for years by drawing custom emoji and stickers that she’d like to have.
And you can have their emoji too. Parakeet has released their own iMessage sticker pack, so not only can you get your hands on their designs, but you can share them with your friends, family, and co-workers every time you send a message using your iPhone. Whether emoji or stickers, icons or logos, chances are you’ll continue to see more of Parakeet’s designs in the years to come in apps and messages—and plenty of other places. Their small-scale design will continue to have a big impact, proving that the little things definitely mean a lot.
Enter before November 20th, 2017! We might just send you to HOW Design Live 2018!
