Someone tell me how I’m sick and yet my body temp is still only 35.3°C. Like. I feel so warm and flushed.

 I saw this shared by the lovely @earthlaughsinflowersblog who opened the tagging to anyone...and since I don’t really do a lot of these things, I figured I would force you all to learn things about me. Muhahahaha.

1. what is the color of your hairbrush? I have two green (for when my hair is wet) and wooden (for when my hair is dry). My hair is a wild animal.

2. a food you will never eat? Rocky Mountain Oysters. Enjoy the googling.

3. are you typically too warm or too cold? I run warm. I like to keep the temp cool in my home...friends complain.

4. what were you doing 45 minutes ago?  Talking with my mom on the phone.

5. what’s your favourite candy bar? Snickers

6. have you ever been to a professional sports game? Many. I actually am a big sports fan, and I am lucky to live in a city with very nice venues. Its a fun time.

7. what is the last thing you said out loud? "Lola knock it off.” Lola is my cat. She was scratching the carpet on the stairs. This happens frequently

8. what is your favourite ice cream? Either I add boxed cake mix to vanilla ice cream for cake batter ice cream, or I go for pistachio or mint chip

9. what was the last thing you had to drink? raspberry lemonade gatorade

10. do you like your wallet? Very much, I’ve had it for over 10 years, and its still my fave. Its navy and green...my two favorite colors.

11. what is the last thing you ate? Nachos.

12. did you buy any new clothes last weekend? no, I probably need to replace a lot of closet though...

13. what’s the last sporting event you watched? Football last night, and I’m about to watch football again. Hey, I said I liked sports lol.

16. ever been camping? Yes, but not for a long time, my family is not big on camping

17. do you take vitamins? Magnesium and B6

19. do you have a tan? I do, and I keep it even in the winter

20. do you prefer Chinese or pizza? Oh jeez...I am very much a mood person...so right now I would say Chinese...but that will probably change in an hour...

21. do you drink your soda through a straw? I do not drink pop. And yes I call it pop.

22. what color socks do you usually wear? I work from home now so I rarely wear socks, but I have some blue and white knit slippers I wear around my house all the time.

23. do you ever drive above the speed limit? *Laughs very very loud* Yes.

24. what terrifies you? Being in situations I do not know how to handle and moths. Also not being able to escape.

25. look to your left, what do you see? my work computer.

26. what chore do you hate most? As previously mentioned my hair is terrifying and I also have a cat so cleaning the floors is like a daily odious task.

27. what do you think of when you hear an Australian accent? One of my friends from high school whose whole family was from Australia.

28. what’s your favorite soda? Not a pop person...but I do drink ginger ale on airplanes.

29. do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive thru? I don’t eat fast food, although I order delivery a lot

34. last book you read? some generic romance novel with a name like Only You or Waiting for Her or something like that. Last book title I remember reading was The Shining (not the best social distancing books folks)

35. favorite day of the week? Thursday. No reason, I just like it.

36. can you say the alphabet backwards? If I concentrate really really hard

37. how do you like your coffee? black. its not fussy and its fewer calories.

40. which do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets? Sunsets, though I appreciate morning air a lot.

41. how many blankets are on your bed? I have one throw over my comforter.

45. do you play cards? Yes! My family is a big fan of pinochle, up and down the river, and golf.

47. can you change a tire? Nope. I wish I did though!

48. your favorite state or province? Besides my own, I really like visiting Washington state.

49. favorite job you’ve had? strawberry picker. It was my first job when I was 14 and I got to bring home a crate of fresh strawberries every night...

153. Drunk or high. Uhhh depends on the high. Im not a fan of getting past a buzz, and weed doesn't agree with me, but I am a fan of gettin high on a bit of that sniff sniff powder on special occasions if you catch my drift.

149. Hot or cold. I'm on seroquel, which means I break out in itchy rashes when hot (thanks, heat intolerance side effect). So I love the cold, more control over my body temp as I can put on more layers if needed.

The line of T'Pring's back is straight and long, elegant in the misty morning light that creeps through the empty window frames of the modest cottage. Heat slips inside as well, blanketing the room and spiralling Nyota's thoughts along a simple track of lethargy. She doesn't move from the bed, flat on her stomach and legs twisted in the cotton sheets, and simply watches.

T'Pring's chest rises and falls almost imperceptibly in her meditation. Her long black hair cascades in a gentle wave down her back, over the thin fabric of her tunic. There has never been a more poignant moment in her life, Nyota thinks as she watches her. Not her assignment on the Enterprise, not her various promotions, not even their wedding, not 36 hours prior. The bond between them thrums with the sorts of quiet, passive love, of an earnest devotion, which can only be heard when the world is this still, this silent, when they both tiptoe into their own versions of meditation.

REET REET.

Nyota's eyes flutter shut as her lip twists up in disgust. For the love of--

She reaches for the side table, craning to get her comm into her grasp without moving from the bed. "I'm on my honeymoon," she says into it, flatly, without listening to whatever her temporary shipside replacement has to say, and snaps it shut. She considers it for a moment- hardy and strong metal designed to take an away mission's beating, buffed to a shining gold color which will stand out sharply against the close cropped brown lawn- and then tosses it out the window to find later.

T'Pring snorts.

"I've been a model officer literally since the moment I graduated from the Academy," Nyota mutters, muffled as she presses her face firmly into the pillow. "I've saved the Earth specifically half a dozen times, and other planets too many times to count. Jim can give me the week he fucking promised. Go back to meditating."

"It could be an emergency," T'Pring points out. She sounds ever so vaguely chiding, but the only emotion pulsing through their mental link is one of deep seated amusement.

"It's always an emergency. They don't need me."

The amusement deepens, sharp and cutting and just a little bit snide and a little bit proud, at its heart.

"Yeah, I heard it, too." Nyota yawns so widely that her jaw cracks, the sound swallowed by the heady humidity of the air. "But regardless, they'll have to manage without me, because I'm here with you. One full week--Jim promised. Spock promised. And since they're both jackasses who don't know the meaning of a work-life balance, I made Len and Christine promise to hold them to their promises."

Whoever had managed to convince Christine Chapel to return to the Enterprise deserved every commendation in the world. A sainthood. A full jug of Scotty's remarkably smooth bathtub liquor. Nyota hadn't realized she needed a friend who was a high ranking, take-no-shit female officer until the blonde with the caffeine addiction had filled in for Len at a staff meeting, settling in next to Nyota and proceeding to tear Scotty a new one over his lax approach to workplace safety protocols. It had been best friendship at first sight.

T'Pring slides slowly over top of Nyota, the tip of her nose tracing lightly up her bare spine before taking a gentle turn for the featherlight press of lips against the birthmark on her shoulder. "I can hear it beeping," she rumbles, still thoroughly entertained, as she finally settles her weight like a blanket over her wife. There is a possessive sort of satisfaction in the motion--like inspires like in Nyota's own chest.

Forever, she doesn't need to think, because T'Pring has already murmured it into her skin the night before.

Nyota finds her hand, palms coming together and fingers twining in what is more intimate than a simple Vulcan kiss, the press of fingertip to fingertip, yet more chaste than the deepest of the human kind. "Grab my phaser," she suggests.

Her own silent laughter shakes her shoulders as T'Pring's revulsion shoots spikily through her mind. "Do not even joke," she says sternly.

"I will not deface Starfleet property to continue my honeymoon sex marathon with my wife," Nyota promises dutifully.

"Your captain shall be glad to hear it."

Nyota's laughter breaks out of her this time, high and wild in the morning light. "My first officer will be thrilled to hear it--my captain would have already snapped that thing in pieces!"

She can hear the beeping, too, if she strains for it. That's as reassuring as anything else, honestly--whatever the situation, it's pressing enough that they want her attention, but not so pressing they're just beaming down to get her. Len's probably already on the bridge, chewing Jim's ear off for daring to call her, even as Spock silently encourages her temp to keep hailing her.

"We must rise, eventually," T'Pring tells her. "I still wish to hike the trail today."

Nearly every square meter of this entire planet belongs to a wildlife habitat, meticulously maintained by its nearest neighbor. This cabin is one of less than a dozen on the surface, each situated by a winding nature path so rugged and minimally maintained as to be hardly recognized for what it is. To venture out onto it means there is the promise of a dozen stunning vistas, of seven waterfalls, of silent companionship as she trails diligently behind, of the way her wife's trousers tuck into her hiking boots and of those little whisps of hair that escape her braid as the sun rises and then sinks in the sky.

But staying here has the promise of more of that silent, still love humming through her veins, of the taste of T'Pring's lips and the decadent flavor of the wine chilling down in the cellar. They have a week to enjoy that trail--she wouldn't mind another day spent right here.

Nyota sighs, trying to sink deeper into the bed, and T'Pring must sense (does sense, they're Bonded now) her reluctance to move because she nips teasingly at the nape of Nyota's neck with those slightly too sharp to be human canines. "We shall not do the whole thing today," she promises. Curls her free hand about Nyota's hip and lifts her own weight enough to nudge her into turning over. Her dark eyes, when Nyota reluctantly obliges, are soft and earnest and far too expressive for her solemn face. Her fingertips stroke the curve of Nyota's jaw, light and reverent. "I shall not stop to take any clippings."

She hums internally with amusement again, fully aware of the overwhelming fondness in the exasperated, "Better not," that Nyota mutters with a slight roll of her eyes. Botanists. Obsessive, the lot of them.

"And--" T'Pring's smirk tugs at the corners of her lips-- "I have been told that the third waterfall has a particularly refreshing pool beside which we could take our lunch."

No image comes through their Bond, just imagined sensation--overheated, sweat slick skin slipping into the water, sweet berries foraged off the side of the path pressed to each other's lips. The glorious shade of the trees after each bout of brilliant sunlight, and the spattering of freckles taking root on T'Pring's shoulders and cheeks. Trudging through the door of the cabin on their return, muscles aching with the satisfaction of a well spent day, laughter as they finally tumble into the bed.

"Well," Nyota says, and it is not so much begrudging as it is breathless, "when you put it like that."

"Then we are agreed." T'Pring squeezes her hand and then releases her, rolling out of the bed completely. Her loose tunic falls to mid thigh, and she finds her trousers where they had been flung in the far corner of the room. "Today we hike."

She is already walking to the other room, clever fingers deftly beginning to braid her waist length hair, as she adds, "On our way out of the cabin you can also locate your communicator and verify the status aboard your ship."

There is a moment of pure silence.

Nyota stares up at the ceiling, exasperation flooding through her system like ink in water. "I've been had," she tells the ceiling. She imagines she is speaking to the Enterprise, somewhere unseen in the sky high above their heads. "Take us back to the Vulcan elders, I want a divorce."

T'Pring's answering laughter- so blindingly rare- is nearly enough to make up for her treachery.

Make a DIY Bucket Air Conditioner

Make a portable room air conditioner for about $30 with a couple of buckets and a desk fan

We have central air conditioning. It’s a big, hulking monster from the early 1980’s that’s loud, doesn’t cool well, and practically forces us to take a second mortgage on the house every time we run it for a couple hours, so we rarely use it. Mostly we sweat it out with fans and shades.

A few days ago, my wife came home from the neighbors to tell me about their portable swamp cooler which kept their house pretty comfortable even though it was almost triple digit heat outside. I investigated and found that it was an “evaporative cooler”, basically a box that blew air across water to cool the temperature of the air. Units for a room the size of my family room ran about $400, which was the same cost as a portable AC, so I figured if I was going to spend $400 on a portable unit, I’d spend it on an AC.

But I didn’t want to spend $400 on anything, so I decided to wander the Internets and see what kind of DIY swamp coolers were out there. Turns out, there’s all kinds, many of which worked the same as commercial evaporative coolers, but cost far less.

A little more research led me to rule out the coolers that called for pumps and trays and evaporative media because I would have to buy all that stuff. Instead I went with the “bucket AC”, which uses a couple of buckets, a fan and some plastic pipe, because, other than a cheap table fan, I had all the stuff.

Most of the bucket AC instructions I came across called for a 5 gallon and 3 gallon bucket and some 1½-inch PVC pipe. The room I wanted to use this in is a little larger and has high ceilings, so I went with a 10 gallon and 5 gallon bucket and 2-inch pipe (also, I already had the buckets and the pipe).

Building the Bucket Air Conditioner

Supplies

2 buckets — one 10 gallon with lid and one 5 gallon (or 5 gallon with lid and a 3 gallon)

2-inch PVC or ABS pipe — I went with the black ABS (used in drain vents) because I had it leftover from a sink project. You need about 36-inches.

1 desk fan — Size will depend on your big bucket’s lid size. Mine was 12-inches in diameter, so I got a cheap 11-inch desk fan from Amazon.com

1 gallon jug of water — Chill it in the fridge or freeze it overnight

Supplies – 10 gal bucket, 5 gal bucket and pipe

Basic 11-inch Desk fan

Tools

Drill

½-inch drill bit

2-inch hole bit

Small hacksaw

Step 1 – mark and drill your holes in the large bucket

Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the center of three equidistant holes on one side of the large bucket. Use the 2-inch hole bit to cut three holes in the side of the bucket.

Step 2 – drill holes in the smaller bucket

Place your smaller bucket inside the larger one and align it so it’s in the center. Use pieces of wood or piping to keep the smaller bucket centered in the bigger one. With the three holes in the big bucket as guides, use the hole bit to drill three holes in the smaller bucket.

Step 3 – Cut and insert your pipe

Cut three even lengths of pipe and pass them through the holes in the buckets so the ends stick into the inner bucket just a little. I originally cut mine to 8-inches, which was more than long enough to pass through both buckets, but I found slightly longer pipe length of 10-inches distributed the cool air better.

You want to cut a hole big enough to allow the fan to blow the most air it can into the bucket without actually falling into the bucket. My 10 gallon bucket’s lid was a little over 13-inches in diameter inside the rim, so I bought a basic 11-inch desk fan from Amazon, which, conveniently, was 12-inches wide with the fan guard.

The easiest way to trace the piece to cutout of the lid is to push a drill bit in the lid then use a piece of string and a pencil like a compass. Once the outline is traced, make a hole at the edge of the line, pop your hacksaw blade through the hole and follow your line with your saw to cut the opening.

Step 5 – Try it out

The bucket AC works best with there are no obstructions in front of the pipe outlets. You can see from the photo I put mine in the center of the family room where the air would distribute freely. (Then I put it up on a plant stand, because one of our dachshunds looked like he really wanted to mark it as his.)

Once it’s in place, put the jugs of chilled water in the center bucket (I can fit two in mine), flip the fan face down on the bucket lid and turn it on. Viola! Conditioned air!

My results

Is it possible to keep the house cool in a triple digit heat wave with a bucket air conditioner?

Yes. Absolutely.

Our usual strategy in a heatwave is to leave with the windows and doors open at night to let in the cool air, then close the house up in the morning before it starts to heat up. With just a couple of circulation fans, we can usually keep the temperature below 80 degrees until noon. By mid-afternoon indoor temps creep into the mid-80s and don’t start coming down again until it cools off at sunset.

The first day we tested the bucket AC it was around 70 degrees at 7am but it was expected to reach the high 90s by noon. It hit 80 degrees a little after 8am (hello sunshine) and we followed the usual protocol, closing the doors and windows. Then I switched on the bucket and let it run.

As you can see from the nearby photo, 30 minutes before noon the outside temperature was heading for 100 degrees while the indoor temp had moved a mere 2 degrees. Better yet, that weather station is near the front door in the living room, a good 35 feet from the bucket, which meant the whole front section of the house was similarly comfortable.

We managed to ride out the 5 days of that heatwave with the indoor temperature never climbing above 82 degrees, which is pretty good results for an AC unit built out of buckets, water jugs and a desk fan. It definitely works and works well.

Lessons Learned

It’s not so much about the cooling, as it is slowing the heating.

In my system, two gallons of water chilled down to 40 degrees reaches room temperature — whatever that is, 70, 72, or 80 degrees — in a little over 2 hours. The room temperature never falls, so it’s not cooling it, it’s just slowing the rate it gets hotter. Without the bucket AC the indoor temperature rose about 2 degrees an hour. With it, it rises at less than 1 degree every 2 hours. As a result, if I want the room to still be a warm (but comfortable) 78 degrees in the late afternoon, I need to make sure the room is as cool as possible in the morning and be ready to fire up the bucket AC as soon as the outdoor temps start to rise.

That said, the $20 I spent on the fan and the afternoon I spent putting the bucket air conditioner together were well worth it. Even if it looks like R2D2 with battleship guns, it does a pretty good job at keeping the family areas of the house comfortable, and it’s way less noisy and expensive than my old beast AC.

Weber SmokeFire Is a Pellet Grill That Can Do It All(most)

The SmokeFire is Weber’s first foray into the pellet grill space, and while it checks a lot of boxes, it has its quirks. The Weber SmokeFire is a good option if you’re looking for a grill that will allow you to both smoke at low temperatures and grill with high heat. Coming in two sizes, the SmokeFire starts at $999.

The Weber SmokeFire is made out of enamel-coated steel with double-wall sides for insulation.  Unlike many pellet grills, the SmokeFire utilizes three vents in the rear of the chamber for exhaust, instead of a chimney.  The cooking grates are made of plated steel and the main cooking surface on the EX4 is 18″ x 24″ while the main cooking surface on the EX6 is 18″ x 36″.  Both grills have a small upper cooking surface as well, making the total cooking area 672 square inches and 1,008 square inches on the EX4 and EX6 respectively.

  Both models have a built-in shelf with utility hooks on the right side as well as the controller.  The controller features a large, backlit LCD screen that’s easy to read in daytime as well as night.  You adjust settings using a rotating knob that pushes in for confirmation.  It’s very easy to use, unless its cold outside.  When the temperature is cold, the liquid crystals seem slow to respond and you need to turn the dial slowly in order to change the temperature.  The controller has four probe ports while the SmokeFire only comes with a single temperature probe.

There is a grease & ash pullout tray underneath the cooking chamber that works fairly well and is much easier than vacuuming the fire pot out manually, but more on that later.  The SmokeFire is perched on four casters, two of which lock.  While the casters are fairly small, I’ve found that doesn’t make much difference unless you’re moving it around all the time.  On the rear, you’ll find the long and narrow pellet hopper that holds around 22 pounds of pellets.  That said, the pellet hopper is a little too narrow and I find that it’s difficult to keep pellets from falling on the ground during refill.  Also, once the pellet hopper insert is installed (discussed later) the capacity gets down closer to 20 pounds.

Assembly of the Weber SmokeFire was really easy, especially when using the BILT App, which is a mobile phone application that takes you through the installation instructions step-by-step, using three dimensional diagrams that you can rotate and zoom into.  Assembly took about 45 minutes with two people, but it can mostly be done by one person as long as you get some help with the heavy lifting.

I did a number of cooks on the SmokeFire, from low and slow smoking to high heat grilling.  The one thing I will say for sure about this pellet grill is that it can really grill.  Unlike most pellet grills that require accessories (which of course are sold separately) in order to sear a steak, the Weber SmokeFire can be set to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, reaches the target temperature in about 10-15 minutes and does a great job cooking burgers, chicken breast, steak, and anything else you’d grill at high temperatures.

While it does have some flaws, you can tell that Weber did a ton of research on the pellet grills on the market and tried to improve upon some of the common user complaints.  Some of the issues they tried to solve include:

This one is obvious, but you can tell Weber’s main goal was designing a pellet grill that can hit those high temps to grill and sear.  They replaced the standard full-size deflector that comes with most grills and instead the SmokeFire utilizes a smaller deflector directly over the firepot with smaller flavorizer bars spread throughout the grill.  This allows for more direct heat when you want it and indirect heat when you don’t.

Ash and grease management:  Weber designed the SmokeFire in a way that lets the grease fall to the bottom of the grill and funnels it into a pull-out grease tray.  The firepot is also perforated to allow the ash from the pellets to fall into that same pull-out tray.  While neither was 100% solved, this is a step in the right direction.

Burnbacks:  A common problem with pellet grills is that the pellets inside the auger catch fire from the firepot and burn almost like the wick of a bomb, back toward the pellet hopper.  With the industry-first inclined auger design, it’s almost impossible for a burnback to happen in a SmokeFire thanks to the distance between the auger opening and the firepot.

Another reason the inclined auger is an innovative feature is that it also prevents pellet jams.  During the shutdown sequence, the auger will run in reverse to clear the auger of pellets, which often are the cause of jams in other grills.

As I mentioned, I did a number of cooks on the SmokeFire.  I was most excited to check out the high heat grilling, but I would have been remiss if I didn’t also test out the low and slow smoking performance.

I made a number of quick weeknight meals on my SmokeFire, including

Chicken breasts (a number of times) that were well cooked on the exterior and juicy on the inside

Bubba burgers that were a little overcooked, but that was user error, as they cooked a lot faster than I expected when the grill was set to 600.

Ribeye steaks that were cut a little too thin by the butcher, however, I was able to achieve really nice grill marks while cooking them to a medium-rare on the inside.

For my low and slow test, I smoked a corned beef, otherwise known as a Pastrami.  I placed the corned beef on the top shelf with a water pan directly underneath.  The SmokeFire imparted a great smoke flavor and held well at 225 while it still had pellets in the auger.  I say that because I ran into pellet tunneling issues a bunch of times during this approximately 6-hour cook.  Pellet tunneling occurs when there isn’t enough slope for the pellets to fall down to the auger, and while this happens from time to time on most pellet grills, the issue is more exaggerated on the SmokeFire than any of the other pellet grills I’ve tested.  Weber tried fixing this by shipping a pellet hopper insert, which increases the slope of the hopper while reducing the hopper capacity from 22 lbs to about 20 lbs, but for some reason, this still did not fix the issue.  For a pellet grill, where the major selling point is that you can “set it and forget it,” the fact that I can’t trust the SmokeFire to do an overnight smoke is a significant fault and may be the most frustrating downfall of the grill.

While we’re talking about downsides, let’s talk about some of the other faults of the SmokeFire after having tested it thoroughly.

Software:  While nice looking, the Weber Connect app feels unfinished.  While you can set alerts for each of the four probes and there are a few guided recipes that the app can take you though, I’m left wanting more.  I’d love to be able to change the setpoint temperature or put the grill into shutdown mode from the app.  I’d also love to see some temperature charting, showing how my grill has been performing against the setpoint.

Ash flying everywhere, except for on the food.  The SmokeFire’s fire pot is perforated to allow the ash from the spent pellets to drop down into the ash tray, however the fan stoking the flames tends to cause ash to fly around the grill.  Strangely, and positively, I didn’t notice any ash collecting on the food itself, but you may want to avoid cooking on a flammable surface, such as a wooden deck, because I did witness hot ash flying outside of the grill.

The design of the grease collection at the bottom of the cooker needs work.  The grill is designed to channel grease down the center of the grill into the grease collection tray, however, the ash I mentioned above also collects in the grease channel.  Ash + grease = blockages.  If you do not clean out the grill after every cook, you run the risk of a grease fire if the grease channels are blocked.  While it’s good practice to clean out your grill once in a while, I’ve never used a grill that required so much maintenance.

Uneven cooking:  No matter how I wiggled or jiggled the large, central diffuser, I couldn’t get the grill to heat evenly, whether it was low and slow or high heat.  The central diffuser isn’t held in place like most pellet grills I’ve reviewed, and because of this the diffuser can easily shift left or right by accident while cleaning.  It’s difficult to know exactly how to align the diffuser and this can lead to large temperature swings from the left to the right of the grill.  During testing, I measured a difference in temperature of almost 70 degrees between the left and right sides of the grill.  See photo below.  During high heat grilling, I noticed that the food on the right side of the grill was finished sooner than the food on the left side.

  In conclusion, my testing has confirmed that Weber’s SmokeFire achieved most of what it set out to do; build a pellet grill that can smoke low and slow for weekend projects and sear with high heat to act as a gas grill for quick and easy weeknight meals.  While it can certainly do both, the SmokeFire has some quirks that make it difficult for me to recommend it to friends at this time; mainly the fact that I can’t leave it on its own for a long low & slow smoke, and the uneven heating throughout the chamber at both low and high temps.  I am confident that Weber will iron out these quirks, which is why I would recommend waiting until the next iteration of the SmokeFire.  I’ve used Weber products for years and can attest to their high quality and excellent customer service, so I have no doubt the SmokeFire will get some great improvements sooner than later.

Cost Cutting Algorithms Are Making Your Job Search a Living Hell

Jeffrey Johnson was on one continuous job search, more or less, for 12 years.

After the recession shuttered the textbook publisher where he was putting his bachelor’s degree in history to use, Johnson worked office temp jobs and delivered packages, on an Uber-like gig basis, for Amazon and a medical testing company around his native Baltimore. He went back to school for a masters in screenwriting and then a law degree. Throughout, he scrolled through sites like Indeed and ZipRecruiter looking for better, more stable work—or just something to tide him over between semesters.

About two years ago, he started getting emails asking him to take online “assessments” for jobs after he applied. Some were tests of basic office skills, like spreadsheet use and typing. Others were for legal knowledge. Some were dippy personality tests. At first, Johnson was excited. “I thought it meant I’d gotten past a gatekeeper of some kind and was in the running,” he said.

Then the tests came quicker and more frequently. One in four jobs had an assessment attached, he estimates. He got emails prompting him to take an online test seconds after he submitted an application, a sure sign no human had reviewed his résumé. Some were repeats of tests he’d already taken.

He found them demeaning. “You’re kind of being a jackass by making me prove, repeatedly, that I can type when I have two writing-heavy advanced degrees,” Johnson said, “and you are not willing to even have someone at your firm look at my résumé to see that.”

Johnson also did phone interviews with an Alexa-like automated system. For one job, he was asked to make a one-sided video “interview” of himself answering a list of company-provided questions into a webcam for hiring managers to view at their convenience. Or maybe an algorithm would scan the video and give him a score based on vocal and facial cues, as more than 100 employers are now doing with software from companies like HireVue .

Until he started as a legal writer for FreeAdvice.com last month, Johnson, 36, said he was at potential employers’ whims. “I can’t imagine I’d move to the next round if I didn’t do what they said,” he told Motherboard.

Companies are increasingly using automated systems to select who gets ahead and who gets eliminated from pools of applicants. For jobseekers, this can mean a series of bizarre, time-consuming tasks demanded by companies who have not shown any meaningful consideration of them.

“Obviously, in our society time is money,” said Ifeoma Ajunwa, an assistant professor of labor and employment law at Cornell University and author of The Quantified Worker. “So if you are asking [job applicants] to spend so much time on an application then you are transferring the labor your HR department would be doing to the applicant, so it becomes an ethical issue.”

Applicant Tracking System (ATS) software has long been used by high-end firms searching for executives and HR managers at large corporations that receive thousands of applications. The systems are increasingly being adopted in various sectors of the labor market. ATS vendor iCIMS claims it revamped Footlocker’s process for hiring sales associates, and JazzHR brags that it helps a regional Pittsburgh construction company hire all its staff, including interns. (JazzHR and iCIMS both declined to comment for this story.)

Beating the Bots

Maneuvering around algorithmic gatekeepers to reach an actual person with a say in hiring has become a crucial skill, even if the tasks involved feel duplicitous and absurd. ATS software can also enable a company to discriminate, possibly unwittingly, based on bias-informed data and culling of certain psychological traits.

Lynne Williams, a Philadelphia-area career advisor, holds a seminar called “Beating the Applicant Tracking System.” Every time, she braces for a wave of anger from the audience. “I can feel their blood pressure rise when I tell them what they are doing wrong,” she said.

Their most important task, she tells crowds of jobseekers, is to parrot keywords from job descriptions. The most basic elimination function of most ATS software is searching résumés and cover letters for keywords. Many systems can’t—or don’t bother to—distinguish synonyms, like “manager” and “supervisor,” so she says to rewrite résumés with each application, mindlessly copying words from the job description. Countless online guides for “beating the bots” recommend the same.

People find this task frustrating and are indignant over its irrelevance to their fitness for the job, Williams said. Others fume about all the time spent carefully crafting applications that were probably never seen by a human.

Jack Wei, a director of product marketing for the job site SmartRecruiters, said that “the moment a candidate applies [for a posted job], a ‘smart profile’ scrapes résumé info into a digital portfolio by extracting keywords.” The employer then sees an automatically generated score, from 1 to 5, of their apparent fitness for the job. The platform distinguishes synonyms and word variances when making this score, but the employer can search using any narrow phrase or word they choose, Wei said.

According to data from the job site Glassdoor, 250 people apply to the average corporate job. Many ATS vendors sell their products on the suggestion that hiring managers are overwhelmed by applicants. When almost half of Americans work low-wage jobs, a good job of any kind will generate a long line of hopefuls, despite the official government unemployment rate being at a 10-year low of 3.5 percent.

ATS technology encourages applicants to find ways to cut in line, said Anjunwa. She has heard stories of people inserting common keywords in small white font on their PDF résumés, visible only to bots, to sneak into the next tier of candidates.

Applicants can also use services to help them beat the algorithms, like the website Jobscan, which will scramble words from a job listing into their customers’ résumés for $49.95 a month.

Such tricks don’t show relevant job skills, but perhaps vital job-hunting ones, Anjunwa said. “People see that only people who are savvy get jobs,” she said, “and the others get shut out.”

How Often Does the Following Statement Describe You at Work?

The next round of the screening process is often an assessment test. Such tests have been around for decades, but ATS software has made it easy to deliver them automatically to an applicant’s inbox.

Indeed, the world’s most visited job site, has been pushing assessments in recent TV advertising. The company offers employers online tests for basic aptitudes, like attention to detail and memorization and recall; job-specific skills, like bookkeeping and first aid; and more abstract competencies, like critical thinking and problem solving.

Most take about 30 minutes. They still piss off jobseekers.

“I've been finding a lot of online assessments that come with the job applications I file, wrote a poster on the jobs subreddit. Every time I see one of those, I immediately cringe. I HATE THEM.”

“They're usually very long … and most of the questions I just. Can't. Answer," they added. "For example, a question such as ‘I prefer to work in team rather than alone’ completely depends on the situation and the kind of job I’m doing.”

Indeed declined an interview but told Motherboard in a statement that “Indeed's free Assessment tool is not a burden to job seekers, it helps job seekers demonstrate their full capabilities to prospective employers,” and that the tests “help job seekers stand out based on their skills instead of their previous titles, employers, or their highest level of formal education.”

Smaller companies also provide assessments, for a fee. Atlanta-based Berke offers both aptitude and personality tests. Neil Morelli, PhD, an organizational psychologist and vice president of product and assessment, said some of the applicant outrage can “come from older assessments that last an hour or two and they can feel clinical.” He added, “These large battery assessments are being replaced by more aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable assessments.”

Morelli admits “enjoyable” is relative in this context, but said a goal of his industry is to produce tests that feel game-like but still convey useful information about a candidate.

The Berke Marketing Free Personality Assessment is a 78-question sample test, where every question is the same: “How often does the following statement describe you at work?” Start it and then comes a flood of phrases and adjectives: “lively,” “disciplined,” “leader,” “angry,” “fearless,” “puts others at ease,” “soft hearted,” etc. The test-taker picks one of four options: “almost always,” “often,” “sometimes,” or “rarely.” Morelli said some of the terms in a test are virtual synonyms to suss out applicants trying to game it. Obviously, one would hesitate to tell a potential employer they are “often” “angry” at work and “rarely” “put others at ease,” even if true.

The assessment tests applicants on psychology’s “big five” personality traits of extroversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Some managers consider these traits for even minimum-wage work.

Why Robots Don’t Think Women Can Handle a Job at Amazon

In 2012, Kyle Behm took a break from university to deal with manic depressive disorder. He applied online for a low-wage job at a Kroger grocery store near Atlanta. A friend who worked there told Behm he didn’t get hired because of the results of a personality test. His father, an attorney, filed suit against Kroger and five other companies that tasked Behm with big-five personality tests for a low-paying job, alleging they illegally screened for mental illness. Sadly, Behm ended his life last year before the case was adjudicated.

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits “employment tests that screen out or tend to screen out an individual with a disability or a class of individuals with disabilities” unless necessary for the job.

Morelli said that Berke’s personality assessment is ADA compliant because it “does not meet the criteria for being a medical examination” and “is not invasive or used to infer mental health.” But asking a candidate if they are “fearless” or “comfortable with others” may produce results indicating a condition like depression or social anxiety disorder.

Some advanced ATS have “learned” bias by incorporating variables that favored people who are already advantaged. Amazon abandoned its development of an AI-based hiring process when the predictive models favored male candidates. The system was relying on résumés submitted to the company over ten years, and because of the prevalence of men in tech jobs, the system began to downgrade résumés that included all-women’s colleges or female-indicating phrases like “women’s chess club.”

The makers of more advanced applicant tracking systems are acutely aware of the bias problem, but are not certain of a solution.

Arya is a “recruiting platform” that uses predictive analytics to identify and classify job candidates. Madhu Modugu, the CEO and founder of its parent company, feels assessment tests are a poor indicator of job performance, and claims that Arya’s platform avoids placing a heavy time burden on applicants.

“[Arya] would look at my history and my past, what kind of organizations and what kind of cultures you are exposed to,” said Modugu. The system would then match the candidate against a composite profile of employees “who are the high performers in the culture of the company.” If a company can’t provide that information, Arya offers its own psycho-metric profile of who does well in the jobs that its customers are looking to fill.

The term “culture” can have some problematic connotations when applied to who is suited for a job. Modugu insists Arya measures the work culture of past employers compared to that of the prospective employer.

But he said he is aware of problems like the one that plagued Amazon: If the system is fed data that shows white males have been the “best” employees—because prejudice allowed them into those roles more easily—it will conclude that white males are the “best” candidates. “The AI has interpreted the data correctly,” said Modogu, “but it has generated biased results because the information is biased.”

The solution is not simple, he said. Developers need to work out systems that can better fight bias and HR managers need to take active steps to increase recruitment from non-traditional pools.

On top of issue of discrimination, the emphasis on data in recruiting can make people feel stuck in a role. Data points come from past experience, and neglect factors like ideas, ambition and understanding of an industry.

Nick Thorch once worked in Microsoft’s inside sales division, selling the company’s products to other large businesses. He wanted to transition to product management. After spending time fielding customer complaints about Windows Vista, he felt he had insight into how software should be developed. He applied for thousands of product manager jobs in Silicon Valley.

“The only time a recruiter was interested in me was for another inside sales position, even if my cover letter, résumé and career objective statement strongly supported a range of business roles,” Thorch said. “ATS mentality keeps people pigeonholed in their past, rather than what they feel inspired to do.”

SmartRecruiter’s Wei saidthat the effect of ATS on narrowing career pathways presents a “good question” for the industry.

“On a technological level alone, there is only so much alone you can do,” he said. Recruiters need to identify people who might be viable for a career change. “You lead with people and process first, but with technology alone you can’t have lasting change.”

Asking Some Hard Questions

When it debuted in 2013, HireVue’s AI analysis of video interviews seemed like an endgame for job application automation. A candidate answers questions to a silent webcam and uploads a video. A program then scans their facial features, word choices and vocal indicators to determine—through some murky, trademarked science—if they should advance to the next round. The Utah-based company once had $93 million in venture capital and more than 600 clients, including Goldman Sachs and Hilton.

Last year, artificial intelligence scientists called HireVue’s methods “pseudoscience” and “profoundly disturbing” in a Washington Post article, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging it violates jobseekers’ privacy through facial recognition.

Cornell’s Ajunwa said AI analysis of mannerisms presents some of the worst potential for discrimination in the labor market. The process would be a roadblock for people on the autism spectrum and for many from foreign countries, as acceptability would doubtlessly hinge on neurotypical, American mannerisms. “What if your culture says not smiling is respectful?” she asked. “There are many cultures where people do not laugh and smile like Americans do.”

The message is clear: She’s offloaded much of her work to someone else.

Ajunwa said automated systems will probably continue to amass between jobs and jobseekers. “I think that’s the way it’s going to advance,” she said. “Companies have come to count on it.” She has called for mandated auditing of algorithmic systems to ensure against “bias in, bias out” preferences like the ones that affected Amazon.

Should job applicants rebel? Should they refuse to take online assessments or to upload video faux interviews or engage the next faceless gatekeeper?

She encourages candidates to take a principled stand if they are in a position to do so, if they are already employed or have good prospects. Ragnaring it to the beach

You may have heard of the ‘Reach The Beach’ (RTB) running relay, the 200 mile, mountain to ocean run thru New Hampshire that has occurred each of the last 19 years.  This year a chance came up to join a group of fellow Medfield Soles as part of a 12 person team that was going to take on the 20th anniversary edition of the race.  I’ve had RTB on my bucket list for a while, and while true that I didn’t start 2018 thinking this was the year I was going to get Reach The Beach done, when the chance came, and knowing the people going into the run, it was too good an opportunity to miss.

The Inception

Some of our regular Saturday running group had done this Reach The Beach relay before, teaming up with a group out of New York and Connecticut who ran under the team banner of ‘Fox Chase’.  When young Adam Graber floated the idea of the 2018 edition as a challenge and started looking for a team of 12 from Medfield, a chance to bring us together with the New York/CT group arose.  Thanks to the coordination of Heidi Lusby and Matt Parnell, we were able to form one half (6 people) of a 3rd team under the ‘Fox Chase’ banner. It was the first time the ‘Fox Chase’ folk were putting in a 3rd team, and meant that 36 people needed coordinating and communicating.

This operation is efficient. As in, military precision efficient. Matt P is a man with the right tools, and communication brilliance to collect data, plan and distribute information effortlessly and in a timely fashion. We received detailed plans on leg assignments, shopping and packing lists, timings, expectations. Every time I sent an email back to Matt I got a response immediately.  Doing that across 36 people is no mean feat.  The fact, as you will see, that this went off smoothly is down to the efforts of Matt and his supporting crew.  ‘Fox Chase’ were the perfect guides for us entering this race and they left nothing to chance or the unknown.

The Basics

1 team. 12 runners. 2 vans. 200-ish miles (just a little bit more), 36 legs, each leg typically between 4 and 8 miles, though some are shorter, some are longer. You and your 5 fellow van mates take turns at running 6 consecutive legs. The other van waits at the end of those 6 legs and then takes over running the next 6. Lather, rinse, repeat.  When you and your van are doing 6 legs, you are either running or supporting - watering, cheering, getting your runner thru their leg and readying the next runner.  When you and your van are waiting for the other van to do their thing, you maybe get a meal, some sleep, some cleaning up. Time goes quickly.

Our Setup

Our 6 Medfield-ites (actually 5 current Medfielders and 1 ex-Medfielder) left the ‘052 at 6:30am on Friday to get to Bretton Woods, the starting point, and the rendezvous with the rest of the Fox Chase crowd, by 10:30am. We had a race start time of noon, and needed to ensure we had time to have our safety equipment checked, watch the Ragnar safety video, get t-shirts, numbers and vans pimped out.  A quick swing off 495 to pick up our ex-Medfielder, and a stop in Tilton, NH to pick up breakfast, and we were in Bretton Woods in plenty of time.

There is of course an app to show you the various legs of the relay and allow you to spend hours thinking about what you are stepping off into.  Our runner #1, George, knew what was in front of him when he toe’d the start line - run up the slope of Bretton Woods ski mountain before coming back down to hand off number 1. Never. Any. Doubt. Crushed it! And with that we begin the process that would define the next 26 hours.

The Running Bit

OK, so this is my running experience. Everyone has their own set of stages, temperatures, challenges, sights, running ‘partners’ and goals. Those who’d done this before knew where the tough parts lay, their strategies, and what they had set out to conquer for themselves.  

I was representing the ‘Clyde army’ in van 1 (I often represent the ‘Clyde army’ in the runs I do with others). The others are all stellar runners - awesome form, strong, steady. Great people to be around, learn from, and great encouragement for one another.

My first leg was leg 4, 2.9 miles. And most of that downhill. Like seriously downhill. Like brakes on the whole way down, downhill. My running app, Strava, reckons I clocked my best 1 and 2 mile runs ever; the power of gravity! I felt great, though knew all that downhill was likely to show up later in my legs.  And passing a guy, whom I’d had in my sights for about a half mile, as we got to ‘trannie 4′ made me feel fabulous.

My second leg was my nighttime leg. And I had the privilege of running from Friday into Saturday, starting around 11:45pm and finishing at 12:45am. So I’d been prepping myself for this section.  6.2 miles was the distance. No problem. I knew the leg was rated ‘HARD’ which given the distance meant one thing - challenging hills.  And it didn’t disappoint.  Straight up right out of the start area. Climbing 400 ft over the first mile & a bit.  The top of that hill was a long way away, broken by a group of neighbors partying 3/4 of the way up and handing out water.  That was a real lift.  Then 2 miles of steady downhill. And then another mile of a similar climb.  That 2nd climb was brutal, but from that peak it was straight and downhill all the way to the finish.  I loved getting to this finish line.  So much so I busted out my ludicrous dance moves with some dude dressed as Prince. That is now forever enshrined on the internet.  And I’m am happy for it.

My third leg, on Saturday morning was leg 28.  It was also rated hard.   This time 5.7 miles, so again not a massive distance. And elevation netted out from start to finish as a drop.  But the trick in this leg was the rolling nature of the run.  My legs at this point were garbage from the prior runs and the miles along this stretch were hard earned.  Getting over the finish line, to the cheers of the guy dressed as ‘Santa’ plus those awesome teammates cheering me up that final rise, was a massive lift.  Plus now I know that all the elves in Santa’s workshop will be called ‘Johnnie’ this year; Santa promised it to me.

Being done with your running is a great feeling.  There is still work to do getting your friends to their own finish lines and cheering on the next runner.  But the healing of your body can begin.

The In-Between Bits

Time flew. 26 hours just melts.  Sure you maybe running for around 3 hours in total, but those other hours are not a time to catch up on your reading, or meditate.  You’ve got work to do.  Get out and rally your fellow runners, across all the teams.  Get your van to the next TA. Catch up with the other van, other teams at major changeovers.

We had a couple of folks in our van with some good local area knowledge. At the end of our first set of legs, this allowed us to

Get a quality dinner & a beer at a Mexican restaurant. No one said you needed to be on an Olympian’s diet.

We got to the next major changeover (TA12) in time for some folks to rollout sleeping bags and lay under the night sky for some rest.  A couple of us decamped inside the high school to sit in comfortable chairs, chat and listen to the country and the western music of the Crunchy Western Boys.  Slipping into sleep would have been sooooo easy.

Now more driving - it’s the overnight legs.  We were running legs 13 to 18 from 9:45pm to roughly 2:30am. This is a key part of the Ragnar experience; overnight running. Again we would ensure every runner could check in with us every couple of miles, able to get water and for safety.  On my leg, it was great just to hear my teammates voices at the top of each hill.  As hard as my leg felt, seeing Sarah M power thru leg 17, barefoot, which felt in the van like it was 6 miles of one long climb, was jaw dropping. Our team was crushing this course and at night when the temps were cooler and ‘Quiet Zones’ were in effect, we made sure our runners knew we were there for them every step of the way.

The handover back to van 2 at TA18, again at a HS, delivered the spectacle of runners lights & a mob of people who shouldn’t be as happy and chatty and full of encouragement at that crazy early time of the day.  Everyone was buzzing.  But now we motored to the next major trannie to get some rest. Again local knowledge prevailed as Jodi motored us thru the countryside to maximize our rest time before we were running again. We were the first at TA23 and took advantage to spread out on the ground and get some sleep.

Sleep of course is subjective. Some got 2-3 hours. I got maybe an hour, but just being laid out was rejuvenating. It had to be, because by 7:30 we were rolling again. Breakfast was ‘on the fly’. People grabbed from dishes prepared by locals at the TAs. Or what they had brought.  We were going and the end was in sight.  

The handover to van 2 at TA30 was the last major one. For us it was the end of running. And the one where the local HS had opened their locker rooms for runners to be able to shower and change. A $5 charge felt like the best $5 I’d ever spent.  We’d of course been sweating and running and then ‘cleaning up’ in the van with little to no more than time to change into dry clothes between runs. The ‘Dude Shower’ wipes helped keep the ‘race funk’ down, but nothing cleans like warm, soapy water. Oh sweet, happy, funny soap and toothpaste. Such simple pleasures.

Van Life

You get the right people, van life is awesome.  Van life in Fox Chase Team 3 Van 1 was awesome. From the time we loaded up in Medfield on Friday morning, to the time we unpacked back in Medfield on Saturday evening, van life was fantastic. I had gotten to know 3 of my van mates over the last couple of years (thru running). Two of the folks I barely knew.  Not a problem. I can now count all 5 of them as good friends. Banter was natural. Stories shared, laughs spread throughout.

A 12 passenger van carrying 6 people and all their stuff may sound like its plenty of room for everyone. And sure, no one was on anyone else’s lap. But with sleeping bags, food, changes of clothes, towels, water, trash (be environment friendly - carry it with you), there was a lot to keep moving.  Folks had to change in the van at discrete moments. Jokes, stories, van humor, van speak all develop thru this continuous experience you are putting yourself thru. Don’t think about your next leg. Share the story of those who’ve gone before you. 

We joked on the way home that we should rent a van every weekend and just drive around together for 26 hours, just to repeat the laughs and stories and events that had entertained us so thoroughly. Maybe every weekend might be pushing it, but go into this experience with an open mind and readiness to be a part of a team, you’ll have no problems and nothing but laughs.

Other Thoughts

Volunteers - make this race.  Throughout New Hampshire, the folks who staffed the trannies, waved flags, served food, helped at first aid stations, counted people in and out, were phenomenal.  They were out for huge numbers of hours, day and night.  They came to cheer, to support. They came with food, with music. They came dressed as Santa and as Prince. Every TA was well staffed. Had a full set of portapotties. This race would not function, nor be as popular or as ‘easy’ to do without these generous and warm people giving of their time so completely. Thank you NH!

Food - you need to bring your own. You’ll likely have time with your team mates to have at least one meal before the end of the race, whether dinner or breakfast. So bring portable, run friendly foods with you. But don’t overload your bags with food. Know what is good for you before a run. Know what you need post race. My teammates who’d done this before had sensible, portable options beyond cereal bars and protein drinks. Hard-boiled eggs. Fresh veggies. Nut butter.  Pepperoni. Share, learn, I know I did and would pack some different options for the next time.

Water - bring lots of it.

Communication - you have to communicate not only within your van, but also with the folks in the other van.  For us the other van consisted of people most of us didn’t know. They were from the core of the ‘Fox Chase’ team and among them had some veterans who shared many tips and stories between major changeovers.  It would have been great to spend more time with these fine people who had extended a warm welcome to us, as well as a chance to spend the night before the race and the night after the race with them at ‘Fox Chase’ back near Sunapee.  Another time we will likely take them up on their offer.  Communication via text made things straight forward .... apart from when the cell coverage was poor.

Finish & Home

We’d headed to the town of Hampton Beach after leaving TA30 all showered (well most of us) & ready to celebrate. We had time for a relaxing lunch, a beer and a walk down the beach to the finish line.  Now we represented one van (6 people) of one (12 people) of three teams (36 people) running under the Fox Chase banner. That is 36 people running over 200 miles over 26 hours. Just getting those folks organized before the race was an operation on the same level as organizing a major military campaign.  Yet Matt Parnell from the Fox Chase group did this effortlessly. With weeks of planning he’d devised team rosters and leg assignments to get each team as close to finishing at the same time as possible.  Then throw in last minute withdrawals and then in-race retirements due to injury, and surely timing was out the window and we’d see who finished when.

Not a problem. People stood up and took on extra legs. Our own George Mix picked up an extra leg and did 2 legs back to back on Saturday morning, basically banging out a half marathon after running and driving and waiting for 20 hours.  Phenomenal. Others did similar. And the net result? All three teams coming down the beach to the finish line at the same time!  That was an amazing sight.  All the runners across all the teams getting into a group and running those last 100 yards thru the finish line, celebrating, being pictured, shaking hands, hugging all together.  

We were done. Bling collected. Friendships established, plans for next year starting to come together.  We departed Hampton Beach leaving the rest of Fox Chase to enjoy their annual dip in the water before heading back to their compound and celebrate the completion of another RTB relay.

We loaded back up in our van and headed south. The spirit didn’t fade. Yeah, everyone was tired, looking forward to seeing family, your own bed, and stretch out. But also with a tinge of sadness that such a great adventure and experience was done.  

Done, but not to be forgotten. Pictures were exchanged. Emails, contacts, social media profiles set up. In the hours immediately after the race, texts flew back and forth. In the next few days laughs exchanged at the expense of folks and their inability to walk/run/sit down/handle stairs.  The photo exchanging between us and between the wider Fox Chase group continues. It’s great to see such a wider view of the relay thru the eyes of the others.

The Big Questions

Would you do it again?

YUP ... I’d do it with the same people, in the same setup. Or bring some new friends to the experience. I’d even volunteer to do the same 3 legs. Why? I want to get the challenge of those hills down cold. Then I’ll look at other legs.  I don’t know if the others feel the same, but I am all about getting those legs (16 and 28) done better, faster, stronger.  That may take the entire next 12 months of hill work and leg workouts and dieting. But I’m going to get those bastards.

What I recommend it to others?

YUP .... if you are looking for this sort of challenge.  Endurance. Distance. Hills. Discomfort. Close relationships. I’m no adventure seeker, but this for me was a chance to break out of suburbia and put myself out there.

Would you try another Ragnar event?

Think so. Have talked with some folks of a destination race. Maybe a Ragnar event would be the one.

So that was me and my first Ragnar experience.  Hopefully you got a taste for 26 hours of running, laughing, living and traveling. Running for me is all about the challenge and all about the friendships.  Ragnar Reach The Beach gets you both in greater amounts than you may find in any other experience.

Our tour of the Golden Circle in Iceland was included in our stay at the Buubble. Our tour guide Olaf picked us up from our hotel (the very cool Canopy in Reykjavik) in a Suburban. Olaf (full name Olafur Ragnarsson) drove us through the three normal Golden Circle stops of Thingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir, and took us to the no-so-Secret Lagoon, an extra waterfall name Faxi Falls, and dinner. He then drove us to the Buubble, and picked us up the next morning and took as back to Reykjavik (with a stop for coffee and pastries, plus a cool mined volcano).

Olaf said he was working for the Buubble group part-time. He was an enjoyable guide – knowledgeable about the area, the history and the country – and he played music from Icelandic artists as he drove. He used to own a music studio where he recorded some of his own music (some of it can be found here) and hosted others to record (Kaleo for instance).

Thingvellir (Þingvellir)

Þingvellir is a national park with places of interest concerning geology and Icelandic history:

It is on the line where the North American tectonic plate meets the EurAsian. Wikipedia has a good map showing where the meeting of the plates passes through Iceland and right through the park.

It is the place with the Alþingi (Althing,) the Iceland Parliament (the oldest parliament in the world), was started in AD 980 (according to what Olaf told us, 930 on Wikipedia). The Althing parliament met here until 1798 (1800 according to Wiki), when it was moved to Reykjavik.

It contains part of Iceland’s largest lake, Þingvallavatn.

The letter Þ (thorn or Þorn) is pronounced in English as “th”. This letter used to be in Old English, Old Norse and some other languages, but survives today only in Icelandic.

One of the many topics Olaf discussed with us was the incredibly well documented Icelandic genealogy and therefore history. There is an app and a website where any Icelandic person can enter their name and see their relation to the founders of Iceland – Olaf showed us his direct line. There is also a dating app to make sure you are not sleeping with an aunt or close cousin (handy!).

The Law Rock (Lögberg) was where the laws were read from during the meetings of the early Parliament. According to the signage at the park:

Here at the Law Rock in the latter part of June each year, the allsherjargodi (the leading chieftain and priest of the Old Norse religion) declared the session of parliament open and declared sanctuary within the parliament site. The session lasted two weeks. During the time of the Old Commonwealth, the lögsöguaõur (Law Speaker) recited aloud the laws in force, standing at the Law Rock. This was before the Icelanders had a written language so the rules of society were passed on orally. The Law Speaker recited one-third of the body of laws each year, but recited the rules of procedure of the Althing items every session.

Though I couldn’t find it documented anywhere, Olaf told us this island in the middle (where there are two bridges in the photo below) is called murder island. This is because when they had disputes that couldn’t be settled the two parties me in the middle to fight out their grievances.

Many of the scenes in the series “Game of Thrones” were filmed in Iceland, and some in this park.

We had a good bit of time to wander around, then met Olaf at the parking lot on the other side (seen at the end of this walkway) before continuing on.

Geysirs of Haukadalur

We were told by our trusty guide that this is pronounced “Gay-zer”, not “Guy-zer” or “Geezer”. The English word “geyser” comes from the old Norse word “geysir” which mean “to gush.” Olaf also told us they called the mist “smoke” instead of “steam”. As Icelanders have an in-depth written history, it is no surprise that the Great Geysir here is the first one ever described in print, first mention in writing in the year 1294.

There are several geysirs at this park. The “Great Geysir” (shown through the smoke in the picture above) rarely erupts, but when it does so it can throw boiling hot water several hundred meters up. The nearby Strokkur Geysir erupts every few minutes, and it is the one featured in the video and photo sequence below.

There’s a good cafe at Geysir where we had a bite, then back on the road to our next destination.

Gullfoss

It was really REALLY windy when we got to the famous waterfall. Olaf told us that the record was five minutes – for a group to get out, run through the waterfalls views and meet him on the other side – because that was all the cold they could stand.

We did indeed do a bit better.

Gullfoss isn’t the biggest waterfall in Iceland – that would be Dettifoss in northern Iceland, which is 330 feet wide with a 144 foot drop, with an average volume of 193 cubic meters of water a second. Gullfoss (Golden Falls) has two drops (36 feet and 69 feet), and the second one makes it look like the water just goes into the earth.

The photo below is looking downstream, showing the crevasse that the water disappears into.

We had clear skies and relatively warm temps for our visit, but the wind made it quite a bit colder. I imagine seeing the waterfall earlier in the year would have been a challenge, and quite a bit colder. My wife braved the cold and wind with a smile.

Icelandic Horses

As we were driving from Gullfoss to dinner, Olaf made a quick stop at a horse corral to introduce us to a few Icelandic horses. Icelandic horses are unique in several ways. They have five gaits instead of the three normal ones of walk, trot and gallop; our guide said this was because they had evolved in the lava strewn fields of Iceland and had developed different gaits to cope. One of the extra gaits is known as the “flying gait” where the horse can hit 30 miles per hour. The horses also by law cannot not be brought back into Iceland once they have left the island and other horses cannot be imported.

There were three that would come up to be fed (and tolerate being petted) and two that stood in the back. These two were new, and didn’t understand that the crazy humans were offering snacks in exchange for a bit of petting.

After a nice dinner at Café Mika in Reykholt, we headed for our final stop.

The not-so-Secret Lagoon

We didn’t have the Blue Lagoon on our itinerary, as it was described to us by one and all as being a crowded tourist trap. There are plenty of other geothermal springs to swim in. Stopping at the Secret Lagoon was a great end to our Golden Circle tour, and, even though Olaf described it as “no-so-Secret anymore”, we didn’t have to deal with crowds or tour busses. The Secret Lagoon is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland, its name Gamla Laugin means “old pool”.

We packed light, which did not include towels. Entry was included in our tour, and towel rental was reasonable (one of the few reasonably priced purchases we encountered while in Iceland) . I followed the Icelandic lagoon  hygiene tradition of showering  in the buff before going in (I was told the ladies on our tour did NOT!), got our two floats and relaxed.

The lagoon was much warmer in spots (most likely where the water was coming in) but it was a relaxing prelude to sleeping in the Buubble.

Extra Stop – the Secret Waterfall

We took a short detour to stop at Faxi Falls, one of the many small waterfalls in the Golden Circle and one we could walk right up to.

There are lots of these “little” waterfalls all over Iceland, many easy to approach.

Now nice and warm (and showered!) we headed for our night in a Buubble. [poet-badge]

Getting Gear

I will stand by physical fitness and know-how as two of the seriously overlooked areas in disaster preparation. They apply to all disasters; car accidents, annual storms, all the way up to whatever apocalypse you like. Even so, there are facets of preparedness that do require “stuff”. “Stuff” usually means spending. That can be a problem for beginners, for people trying to budget, and for preppers traveling when disaster strikes.

One way we can lower the burden on what must be bought is by taking a page from the homeless, the hobos of old, and modern hobos. Other times, we can cut costs by heading to a different “department” to get our survival and grid-down supplies.

Good gear matters. “Get good gear over cheap” is excellent advice. But sometimes, you don’t really need gear to be all that good. And sometimes, you don’t have to spend extra – or anything at all – to get perfectly serviceable preps.

Steel “Tin” Cans

It would be the rare soul who doesn’t run across any soup, fruit, veggie, bean, pie filling, or pasta sauce cans. If we don’t buy or use them often, we can probably score some from coworkers or family, or from along ditches, in recycling boxes, or near park campsites (those … mutter-mutter).

Cans can serve a lot of functions for us, from pots to filters to stoves.

So, first meal, eat one of the bigger cans of fruit or beans, and you can build from there. If you’ve got a hammer and nail, some wire off a chain link fence or from a coat hanger, or some light chain, you’ve got a billy pot for over campfires, on the grill, or over candles – or, a way to transport smoldering coals and save matches.

Give it a pinch at the lip using pliers, snips, or your thumb and a rock, hammer, or file, and you can dimple a pour spout and have a fancy kettle for your disaster cooking.

With the next can, make a water filter using rock and sand, with activated charcoal an ideal “bottom” layer. Pre-filtering will extend the working life of any “real” filters you have, or clarify your water before you boil it. Socks or a cleaned mayo or peanut butter tub can be used to transport your filter.

With your now-clean water and a can or two from the next meal, mix up some bannock to bake on tuna cans or make slicing loaves in bigger cans. Any packaged baking mix – muffins to cake to waffles, with or without yeast or beer for breads – can be used for bannock (or griddle cakes, if you have oil or Pam).

If you have a can that will fit over your pie plate (tuna can) or loaf pan (soups, fruit, tomatoes), you can bake faster and more evenly. Those covers help boil water or heat foods faster.

You can also use your tuna cans to poach foraged eggs or cuisses de grenouille, while your billy pot simmers your pine and creeping Charlie tea or dandelion and cattail soup.

If you have tin snips or good wire cutters (tin snips and wire cutters are really handy tools, period), the sky becomes the limit with your cans.

You can use smaller or cut-down cans for Crisco, alcohol, or oil-based stoves. Larger cans can be cut to sit overtop those, or used in conjunction with all kinds of candle stoves. You can also cut and bend larger tin cans, line with foil to hold campfire coals or charcoal, and add a light baker’s cooling rack, light grill rack, a chunk removed from a grocery buggy with wire cutters to make a grill. Rocket stoves are another option, and hugely efficient.

Cans are also handy to keep you from messing up good pots anytime you want to melt wax – like for waterproofing matches or fire starters or dipping candles – and can eliminate some of the scrubbing if you decide to render down small amounts of animal fats.

A Good Knife

When you shop or price-compare online, specifically eliminate “tactical” from your search results. Type it in your search engine: “—tactical”. Pretty much always, but especially buying bags, boots, and knives, you pay for that word … without always getting extra quality with it.

Full disclosure: I love my Kershaw pocket knife, and I breathe a sigh of relief every time I unroll my Cabella’s butcher set. That said, my fishing kits all have box cutters from the Dollar Tree in them. They work well enough that as I sit in my current life spending $400 a month on Heartgard and NexGard to maintain my 18-36 month stash, I still have them in there.

Remember, an inexpensive fishing license is one of the reasons I can afford those dogs. It’s not like they’re not getting used.

My first camping-hunting-packing do-all blade was not from a sporting goods section, either. It was a scimitar-styled “cleaner” kitchen knife. I periodically find them as carving knives now. Blame it on habit, they’re my go-to – as is entertaining family and friends with samurai and pirate noises when I snag one.

It had a thick blade, a clip-point, and a full tang. I looked back and forth between the wooden handled kitchen knife and the equivalent “decent” (not “good”) woodsman knife, and I opted to pay half as much. Some cardboard, three buttons, dental floss, and $2 Goodwill cowboy boots, and I had a serviceable scabbard.

It feathered sticks, cut thick rope and cardboard, and butchered. I rarely baton wood, but I did use it to chip little V’s in the top and bottom of branches so I could “bounce-pull” or stomp-kick to break them.

Will today’s craftsmanship hold up the same? Probably not. Still, compare apples to apples the quality of steel, the tang and grip, and the versatility of shape you’re getting between kitchen and hunting or survival knives.

Dollar Tree Candles

We’ve all heard “you get what you pay for”. Sometimes that’s true. Sometimes, though, what you’re paying for is a label or logo, marketing and advertising, and cart collectors (see Aldi’s business model). Sometimes, it’s worth “cheap”.

I buy Dollar Tree emergency candles, even though those are now 4.5-hour candles instead of 5-6 hour candles. They’re comparable to Coughlin’s emergency candles in scent, blackening, wick care, and flame steadiness, and I’ve never had them melt in whatever temp a black camper shell reaches when it’s 110 degrees outside.

I don’t buy their tea lights or votives. I don’t dislike them, I just buy bulk online. Wherever you get them, make sure the tea lights are the type with metal shells, not plastic. It’ll give you more versatility.

Dollar Tree also carries some pretty sizeable pillar and jar candles. I find them to be no shorter-lived or “sootier” than candles from Walmart or Bed, Bath & Beyond, just a whole lot less moolah.

Any of those candles can be used in conjunction with a tin can camping or emergency stove. You can use any of them to turn your oven into a stovetop during outages, or to bake in your toaster oven.

While you’re in the dollar store, don’t forget to check for a candle holder, hotplate (candle aisle) and oven mitt for your vehicle bag and your SIP/evac kit.

Other Dollar Tree Preps

If you shop at dollar stores, be aware of the unit-per-price locally and online, and the quality of items. Still, there are things at the Dollar Tree that I either can’t find elsewhere, would pay more, and that allow incremental purchases for tight budgets – and thus more well-rounded preparedness rather than a single outlay that only covers part of a need.

I wouldn’t buy duct tape, flashlights, foil, bandanas, q-tips or cotton balls for cleaning ears (they’re fine as a medical dabber or fire starter), or storage bags.

I’m not a fan of those green-lid Tupperware, either, but glance around them. There’s Betty Crocker storage tubs in a variety of sizes that do live a nice, long time and seal well. That’s an excellent way to keep various kits organized and dry, and way cheaper than Walmart.

I can spend 1.5-4x as much on shelf-stable pepperoni and salami, or a buck a pop on the same size/weight product. Same goes for some of the canned goods, soaps, and long sheaves of cleaning sponges. For the most part, the jute for garden, gift wrap, or wick or fire-starter use is fine – no need to spend more. Flip side: I don’t buy rope or bungees at dollar stores.

I’d rather see somebody with $20 and 3-5 family members get ten sets of jersey “liners” and leather “shells” than only 1-3 pairs of better gloves, total.

In other cases, I don’t actually need items to be of lasting quality. If I’m working through a short-term emergency, Dollar Tree aluminum bread and pie pans work just fine to keep candles from spilling and shelter them from drafts.

For cakes, starting a campfire, or inside a tin can or jar to burn off some dampness and chill in a survival shelter, Dollar Tree birthday candles do us just fine – they’re only getting used twice, at most (I reuse birthday cake candles in my bags and fire kits). Why spend more?

Bootstrap Preparedness

Check out news features about modern hobos for some of their survival tips. Even when it’s not a focus, there are clues for living with little or no income. Another major source for eliminating and reducing costs are curbside pickups.

A used or wrecked kiddie pool can become stash-back water catchment or a tarp. The “shrink wrap” thrown away after winterizing boats and unwrapping pallets has tons of applications. Plants have no idea if they’re growing in a $15-50 pot or a free trash can, storage tote, or filing cabinet drawer. They don’t know you got their mulch by raking pine straw instead of buying it, or that their weed barrier and your fire starter is cardboard from a liquor store or moving company.

There are lots of ways we can cut the cost of preparedness and hit bare minimums. It lets us expand elsewhere and buy some breathing room, without leaving us vulnerable in the meantime.
