Youtube keeps putting so much Harry Potter related videos to my recommended. Any official ones are easy to click off, but what I do not comperehend is that how there can still be so many Youtubers out there who keep creating so many videos about HP. The videos often focus on buying official products, and it's just... don't people really know what JKR has become, or is it that they just simply don't care?
Occasionally I have seen HP themed videos from my favourite youtubers too, them mentioning stuff, but I genuinely think they just are not aware, and I don't know how to make them aware. Usually the comment sections on any video ever are already toxic enough and if you go there with any "woke shit", you will get nothing but messages after messages of people being assholes towards you just because you dared to mention that this is in a way supporting a person who is not very nice anymore. Could be that the creators themselves would take such comments well, but other people? Especially in my country, I already get hate from people for speaking in my dialect because they think I'm an immigrant, or that I must be a very young kid on the internet. I have faced both racist and 'and your age was..?' type of comments just for commenting something normal. I can't even imagine what kind of a shitshow it would become if I went there and said that hey, you're low-key supporting a transphobe even if you didn't mean to do so.
Today my youtube recommended has exploded again. So. fucking. much. HP. content. I always click them away and choose the "not interested" or "don't recommend this channel to me", and it works for a little while, and soon they will be back again. Or there will be other HP themed videos, from youtubers whose whole channel is dedicated to HP videos. And we get back to my original question: are they not aware, or don't they just care?
#mcrmadness' random stuff#like I don't have a problem with people liking the books or movies#I grew up with those and they are still important to me#but I made the decision to not go around and promote the franchise anywhere anymore unless jkr changes back to normal#but I don't think she's ever gonna change so I'm just privately gonna enjoy the books and films and video games I have bought long time ago#I just make sure to not give her any new money nor attention#people not supporting her but still making videos about her creations is still supporting her#because people watch the videos and they might make those people interested in the original content#which then means more support and money to jrk#even if those people would think it means nothing

So thereās this trend Iām seeing on social media about people boycotting / encouraging people not to buy the upcoming Mass Effect remasters.
The reasonings being somewhat varied, some valid, others not, but mostly centering around one thing in specific; cut content relating to same sex relationships that didnāt make it into the games.
Now, I understand not being interested in the product being offered; Iām probably not going to buy it myself for a lack of specific features like multiplayer and... just not needing the buy the game for my fifth or sixth time. Itās completely valid to think the remasters are just not doing enough for you to justify a purchase, or that their faith in the company doing it properly in their current state isnāt there. I get that.
But the mood thatās come up lately isnāt just disinterest; itās downright outrage. Violent, ideologically charged opposition to even the concept of the remasters because of a perceived failure to meet their extremely specific and often high standards and notions of progressiveness.
Now itās not exactly news that Bioware has had a rocky relationship with inclusivity over the years, with queer characters flitting in and out of recognition and prominence, appropriation of queer archetypes, and less than stellar execution of what characters they do include. Iāve had my complaints with these myself from time to time, though itās still always struck me historically as a generally positive, if clumsy attempt at progress that I appreciated despite the flaws; remember that the original Mass Effect 1 came out in 2007, and was the focus of a major media scandal about even including romantic relationships at allĀ in the game, nevermind same sex ones. Thatās 14 years ago! The most recent game in the series is 9 years old!
We can talk about the social standards of the times and the progress weāve made, and we can also talk about the merits of restoring and improving media as it was, or recreating it to more closely reflect the values of today and which or both of them is a worthwhile pursuit, but I donāt think thatās whatās being sincerely argued here.
What we see instead is some protestation that failure to make the exacting changes that they see fit according to their personal ideology is some kind of radically regressive statement, as if itās a conscious, malicious decision and not either one made in good faith or not at all. This movement has collectively decided that the remaster needs to contain exactly the changes that fit their fleeting whims or the entire thingās at best a wash and a wasted effort, and in some cases aĀ āhomophobicā statement of hatred, or cynically callous laziness.Ā
Letās remember; the focus of this argument is the presence of available simulated dating options in a 14 year old game. The arguments posits that some of these alternative options are ones that were cut from the release of the games, notably the first one, and have some or numerous assets that exist in various forms within the game files that with some work can be accessed in the game with user-made modifications. Some of this is true; though much of it is exaggerated or misconstrued in terms of its scope or viability.
Many of these people just assume that this cut content that someone else has restored in a mod somewhere is just some sort of simple toggle done in moments without effort, ignoring the work those modders did on their own time and money to introduce those features.Ā
Even if we just hand wave any standards of quality or continuity or polish and integration these mods have, you have to consider the dozens to hundreds of volunteer man hours of labor these fans put into many of those mods to make them viable that a company paying itās employees a fair wage and time to do without overworking has to budget. Which I should mind to you is something also incredibly topically relevant in game dev these days. Adding new content costs money. Restoring old content, still costs money.
Even then, the viability of many of those original assets is at question in itself; the 'ingredientsā used to create the content are not equivalent to the ācookedā content found in the game files, so some of them are difficult to work with or lacking in features or quality. Hell, we know for a fact that half of the god damn development data for ME1 is just fucking gone, which is why the DLC isnāt making an appearance in the remaster at all; it just doesnāt exist anymore and would need to be remade from utter scratch.
Now thereās a dozen reasons undertakings like these would or wouldnāt make their list of priorities for remaster given the other work they are doing re; texture and model uprezzing, gameplay updates, etc. Itās not exactly strange for them to recreate the game largely as it was with a more limited scope of changes. Perhaps the decision was made to preserve some parts of the game largely as it was; with mostly minor cosmetic changes to things like Mirandaās camera angles; things that donāt have much overhead or ripple effect. Perhaps restoring the content was considered, but didnāt make the cut- maybe for the same reasons it didnāt make it into the game in 2007. Maybe for different ones.
Only the people involved know.
Now, would I like to see some of that content restored and improved? Sure! I think itād have been a great thing if theyād promoted the series as having new or restored content; if theyād promised us such things. But they havenāt, and while itās one thing to praise taking an initiative like that if they had, I think itās completely unreasonable to be outraged that they didnāt.
We can celebrate that kind of outstanding and excellent steps forward in inclusivity, but we have to understand that while someone not being ahead of the curve may not be exciting or even disappointing; it is not in itself an act of directed aggression. And treating it like one is a waste of time and energy that we can direct to protesting actual aggression, or celebrating those outstanding steps.
But hereās the major thing that kills me; all those mods they love and praise arenāt going anywhere.
The remaster will come out and unless Bioware is so completely tone deaf and media blind from the past year they pull a WC3, the old versions of the game will all still be available. All those user made mods they cite in these arguments aboutĀ āhow easyā it is to add content to the game will still be there, ready to play as they always were. Some of them might even work or be easily made to work with the new versions!
All of that will still be there! And weāll have access to a new version of the trilogy that is far more accessible to newĀ players who havenāt yet been exposed to so much of the games content that they are desperate for more of it.
Just look at Mass Effect 1; that game has notĀ aged well, and it was kind of a sloppy mess even when it came out! How many new players can we get to enjoy all the good things the series has to offer with an easily accessed, more enjoyable package to play through the entire series without issue? Iāve done numerous replays of the trilogy through the years, and Mass Effect 1 is always a hugeĀ stumbling block. Itās just a pain in the ass, straight out. Donāt you want at least the option to fix that?
And if not, you donāt have to buy it and no harm is done to you! Enjoy your existing version with your mods and familiar features and flaws.
And if you truly, genuinely care so passionately about Bioware improving their record of inclusivity; look instead to the newĀ game thatās coming out and look forward to that instead. Every game in the franchise has been better than the last at this; ME1 cut the same sex relationships, but ME2 had some. ME3 had even more, and then Andromeda had yet even further than that after patching!
How many will the new game have?
Look forward to that and make it clear to bioware youāre looking for that in their games; just.... ease off this ridiculous vitriol in trying to get people to avoid the remaster because itās not good enough for you. No one needs to have this bullying done to either the developers themselves or the players looking to buy the game for themselves or others. Itās simply not productive.
Especially with this franchiseās sordid history with excessive media outrage and entitlement thatās been absolutely exhausted.
Just... relax. And have some perspective.

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 3/10/17
Ā In movie news, a lot is going on with the Deadpool sequel. At the beginning of the week, it was reported that David Harbour of Netflixās Stranger Things was being sought after for the role of Cable. While fans have wanted a bigger name, like Ron Perlman, Harbour is definitely gonna be cheaper, fitting right in with the movieās budget. Meanwhile, it was reported that actress/singer Janelle Monae was the studioās frontrunner for the role of Domino. Yesterday, however, Ryan Reynolds tweeted the above image, confirming that Atlantaās Zazie Beetz had gotten the role. I swear, with Donald Glover off Lando-ing in the Han Solo movie, and Zazie in Deadpool 2, Atlanta aināt ever coming back. Itās already āon hiatusā, and I fear that itās gonna be like Curb Your Enthusiasm ā something Glover comes back to when he gets bored and has the time to do it. So, look for Atlanta season 2 in 2025.
In other movie news, the Valiant comic universe is getting closer to the big screen, as Dave Wilson has been tapped to direct the Bloodshot movie. Wilson comes from Blur Studio, known mainly for video game trailers, and co-founded by Deadpool director Tim Miller. If you donāt know anything about Bloodshot, youāre not alone. He looks like some kind of albino madman. From what Iāve read, heās basically a zombie soldier whoās animated by nanites. Iāve never read a Bloodshot comic, though, so what do I know? Hereās where it gets interesting: thereās currently a webseries being made by Bat in the Sun called Ninjak vs The Valiant Universe. Starring Michael Rowe (Deadshot from the Arrowverse), the webseries pits the character of Ninjak against other characters in the Valiant Universe ā where Bloodshot just happens to be portrayed by original Green Ranger, Jason David Frank. Now, JDF used to go to all of his convention appearances promoting the Power Rangers brand, but lately has been doing it dressed as Bloodshot. This project isnāt big enough to warrant that kind of dedication. No, Iām convinced heās lobbying for the role in the big screen film. This is like when Sean Young used to go out in public dressed as Catwoman just so sheād get the role in Batman Returns. I donāt know whether to be impressed or saddened. I mean, heās lobbying hard, but thereās no way he gets that role.
Though the news got sort of lost in the cycle last week, Nickelodeon announced that theĀ new season of the 3D Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, premiering March 19th, would be its last. After five years, the show is ditching its serialized approach and is rebranding into an anthology format with the new title Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Once the series ends, a new 2D cartoon, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is slated to premiere in 2018.
In other TV news, folks are wondering if Glenn Howerton is leaving Itās Always Sunny In Philadelphia. The show aired its 12th season finale this week, where we learned that Dennis had a son from a layover in North Dakota. At the end of the episode, he decides that he canāt carry on as heād been doing the past 12 years, and that he needed to leave and go be with his son. This episode aired the same day it was reported that Howerton and Patton Oswalt had been cast as leads in an NBC pilot where Howerton plays an Ivy League professor who loses out on his dream job, and ends up teaching high school science. Currently known as AP Bio, the series is produced by Seth Meyers and Lorne Michaels, so I think itās likely itāll be picked up. Now, Kaitlin Olson currently juggles working on Sunny and The Mick, but Howerton has a bigger role on Sunny, as he also writes and produces. In an interview with Uproxx, though, Howerton said that he wasnāt sure if he was coming back. He said the decision doesnāt have anything to do with his relationships with the other cast members. Sunny still has two seasons ahead of it, but even Danny DeVito recently mentioned that he might be done soon, too. The show really matured this season, as a lot of plotlines came full circle. I donāt even know what theyāll do with 20 more episodes (their seasons tend to be 10 episodes long), but I definitely donāt know how theyād do it without the character of Dennis.
In comic news, Marvel announced that Astonishing X-Men would be returning in July, written by Charles Soule, with art byā¦unknown at the moment. If you remember, Astonishing X-Men debuted as aĀ miniseries during the āAge of Apocalypseā story in the mid 90s, but its claim to fame was the ongoing series written by Joss Whedon in the early ā00s. This incarnation of the team stars Old Man Logan, Archangel, Rogue, Gambit, Mystique, Psylocke, Bishop, and Fantomex. This, combined with the previously announced X-Men Gold, just proves that Marvel is trying to initiate a 1991-style refresh of the X-Men franchise, and I am here for it! This Astonishing team is basically a refresh of the 90s Blue Team from āadjectivelessā X-Men, while the team in X-Men Gold is pretty much a refresh of the 90s Gold Team from Uncanny X-Men. I love the Old Man Logan character, though I fear heās approaching typical Wolverine levels of overexposure. Meanwhile, itāll be interesting to see how Bishop redeems himself considering he spent the bulk of the last Cable series trying to kill a little girl. And itāll be an interesting dynamic between mother and daughter Mystique and Rogue, as well as starcrossed lovers Rogue and Gambit. I still hate Fantomex, though, and I wish Marvel would stop trying to make him āhappenā. Anyway, Ā I donāt get excited for much, comic-wise, but Iām really looking forward to this book.
In sports news, Jay CutlerĀ was cut from the Chicago Bears after 8 seasons. Now, if you know anything about me, you know I donāt give a shit about sports. Still, thereās a funny anecdote here. You see, when Lindsay and I first started dating, Cutler was the starting quarterback of her beloved Denver Broncos. She bought me my first NFL jersey, which happened to be a Cutler jersey. After all, there was no way he was going anywhere, right? Well, he got cut after that season, and I couldnāt really wear the jersey anymore. He ended up going to the Bears, who had the same color scheme. I thought that meant I could still wear the jersey, but apparently that doesnāt fly with sports fans. Anyway, heās also married to Kristin Cavallari of Laguna Beach/The Hills fame, so I guess thereās your pop culture connection to justify my mention of him.
Things You Might Have Missed This Week
Director Joe Carnahan has exited the third Bad Boys film, Bad Boys For Life. Maybe Iāll get around to finally watching the first two before this thing gets made.
Jason Isaacs was cast as Captain Lorca in Star Trek: Discovery. Iā¦donāt know who that is, so itās done nothing to get me excited about this show.
It was a week packed with renewals, as One Day At A Time was renewed by Netflix, Riverdale was renewed by The CW, and Baskets was renewed by FX. I pretty much only have interest in one of those shows. Can you guess which one?
Emma Dumont was cast as Polaris in Foxās untitled mutant series, which will be interesting since sheās Magnetoās daughter and allā¦
The embargo for reviews of Netflixās Iron Fist was lifted, and they werenāt pretty. It seems the problems are with the structure and not necessarily the casting, so it looks like the folks lobbying for an Asian American leadĀ dodged a bullet there.
Who knew Josh Radnor had been working since How I Met Your Mother ended? Well, heās not anymore, as his PBS series Mercy Street was canceled yesterday.
Now, I know Logan had a great week. It came out to rave reviews, and it opened to $238 million worldwide. Still, I kinda got things off schedule. You see, it got the West Week Ever last week before it had even performed. I donāt really want to start this trend of the same thing getting the WWE two weeks in a row just because I just had to see it opening night, hours before pushing āPublishā on the next post. So, yeah, Logan had a great week, but it was the best thing I experienced last week. Now, Iām gonna talk about the best thing I experienced this week.
Since its debut in 2015, Iāve been a big fan of the FXX series Man Seeking Woman. Starring Jay Baruchel (you know who he is, even if you donāt know his name), it follows Josh Greenberg, a down on his luck Millennial who tries to navigate the waters of modern day dating. Like a less contrived version of How I Met Your Mother, the first two seasons saw Josh go on date after date, trying to find The One, but always coming up short. That all changed this season, however, as he met Lucy. He meets Lucy in the season premiere, marries her in the season finale, and their courtship fills out the middle. Lucyās not only perfect for him, but she also helped the show take on a new direction. We started seeing things from a female perspective, as the show became as much about her as it was about Josh. We got to see her deal with having to give up her fun party life to settle down. We see her deal with the temptation of another possible suitor. But in the end, she chose Josh. This season, it was as much Man Seeking Woman as it was Woman Seeking Man.
This week saw the season finale of the show and, as I mentioned, it focused on Josh and Lucyās wedding. The show hasnāt been picked up for a fourth season yet, and Iām hoping it doesnāt. As much as Iāve loved it, it has served its purpose. Over the course of 30 episodes, it set forth a goal and it achieved it. Sure, there are a lot of shows that evolved past their initial concept (looking at you, Cougar Town), and Iām sure the show could keep going as we see Josh and Lucy navigate married life, have a kid, etc. But I think I like it where things ended up. We donāt have to see all of that to know it happens, and I donāt think the show as a whole would be any stronger if we did see all that. Instead of overstaying its welcome, Iād prefer it take the British approach of āless is moreā. Three seasons is a good run, and it did what it set out to do. It found Josh a woman. Now, if they did want to continue the show in some capacity, I would love if they flipped it to Woman Seeking Man. You see, every season, thereās one episode that stars Joshās sister, Liz, as we get to see her life in contrast to Joshās. While Josh is an unlucky in love office manager who lacks ambition, Liz is a driven workaholic attorney ā who also happens to be unlucky in love. The Liz episodes tend to be the strongest of an already strong season, and itād be great to see more focus on her. Josh and Lucy could still pop up as supporting characters, but the focus would now be on Liz.
With all of this gushing, I havenāt really explained whatās so great about the show. After all, it probably sounds like a run of the mill sitcom, but itās far, far from that. Thereās a streak of absurdity to the show that really lends to its tone. For example, in the pilot, Joshās girlfriend, Maggie, leaves him to date Adolf Hitler. Last season, Liz had an affair with Santa Claus, while Josh dates a girl whose ex-boyfriend was Jesus Christ. Yeah, itās not your run of the mill comedy. Youāve got to see it to fully experience it, but I donāt think youāll be disappointed.
The season finale ends with a scene that brings the show full circle to the pilot. If there is another season, I hope they donāt fuck it up. If there isnāt, though, I love what they did, and how they did it. Everything was wrapped up with a nice bow, and itās a strong series from beginning to end. Thatās why Man Seeking Woman had the West Week Ever.
