A regular guy’s experience with a military graded phone and why you might want one

The Ulefone Armor 7 Pro is a smartphone designed for adventurers, construction workers and people who are routinely exposed to conditions that would endanger most modern devices. I’m not any of those things, but I still think it was the right choice for me, and it might just suit you too.

What use has a normal guy like me for a phone built to withstand such extreme conditions? I’m no couch potato, I regularly ride my bike to work and back, enjoy the occasional trekking and camping trip and walk around my city a fair bit. Even so, that is a far cry from the kind of person this phone was designed for.

After all, the Ulefone Armor X7 Pro has a IP-68 and a MIL-STD-810G rating, which means it can literally survive for a day buried under a meter of concrete, withstand half an hour under 1.5 meters of water, its completely sealed to dust or sand, and a bunch of other characteristics you can read about here. Essentially, it’s build to last.

About this review

This article is not intended to be a thorough technical review of the phone, but rather a list of reasons why I think it might suit you even if you are not the intended target for it. Therefore I will only go through some of the most important specs, highlighting what I personally consider relevant.

Okay, now that we listed the technical details, let’s consider what each of them brings to the table and how the final product behaves.

Slow and steady

If you are looking for a fast snappy phone with which you can simultaneously scroll through Instagram, watch a video with picture in picture mode, and have a graphic intensive game waiting for you in the background, this isn’t it. Nor is this the price range you should be aiming at.

The Armor Mediatek Helio A20 processor, with a frequency of 1.8GHz, isn’t anything to write home about. And the 4GB of RAM, though an improvement on previous models, pales in comparison to what even mid-range phones pack these days.

And you know what? That’s actually perfectly fine. The purpose of this phone isn’t to win any race, but rather to get the job done. And that it does.

I need my phone to perform what has become over the years a pretty basic list of tasks: social media, document editing, internet browsing, music and video streaming, taking some pics, and basic photo and video editing.

The Ulefone Armor 7 Pro is able to do any of those tasks without issues, even when I need to open two or three apps in the background. Yes, it does get a bit slow or even freezes for a couple of seconds from time to time, but not enough for it to interrupt my experience.

Battery life

Back when smartphones were a new thing, we used to complain about their battery life bitterly. Habituated to our old not so bright devices whose batteries lasted for days, we felt that the tradeoff wasn’t always worth it. Yes, we were now the proud owners of mind-boggling phones that could perform amazing tasks for us. But use them for a couple of hours and you better find somewhere to charge them (and have the time to wait for that to be done).

Luckily, smartphones are getting better at this by the iteration. With its 4000mAh battery, the Ulefone Armor 7 Pro is just another contender in the race for autonomy.

According to my digital wellbeing app, I’ve been using it an average of four and a half hours per day. That’s a lot. It actually puts me in the top 20% of screen time, but being excited for my new gadget and having to do this review I feel a bit justified.

Even so, I usually have at least 30% of the battery left when I finish my day, if not more. And, on the occasions I don’t use it as much, I can go two days without having to think about charging.

At a time when we are seeing affordable phones with 5000mAh of battery that can last up to three days without charge and that have better performance, the Armor X7 Pro’s battery life certainly won’t make any headlines, but it’s still a great perk for the price.

The Ulefone X7 Pro camera

As I said, one of the tasks I need my phone to perform on a daily basis is taking pictures. With a 13 megapixels main camera, a 5 megapixel front camera, and pro, night and underwater modes, the Armor X7 Pro it’s barely able to keep up with today’s standards.

I know, I know, nobody is buying it to start a photography career. But still, I was expecting a bit more, even from those low specs. Truth be told, the night mode usually just ruins the colors in most pictures and the pro mode feels terribly lacking. I still haven’t tried the underwater mode.

The first picture is taken on normal mode, the second with night mode. This kind of open dimly light landscape is the only instance where I found the night mode actually improved the result.

Pro tip: make sure to disable the Ulefone watermark, as I clearly didn’t.

If your only purpose is to take casual photos for your personal social media, then the Armor X7 Pro will do the trick, but anything more than that and you will need to look somewhere else.

Other details and utilities

There’s a lot to say about this phone. From its unique set of apps to its thick rubber encasing. But, for the sake of brevity, I’ll just go through some of the features that I have noticed more in its daily usage.

Custom button

After using Motorola -and it’s amazing gestures- for years, I was afraid I would have too much of a hard time getting used to another brand. Luckily the Ulefone Armor X7 Pro comes with a custom key on its left side that can be programmed to do up to three different tasks. I have it set just to two: opening the camera and the flashlight. Simple, but incredibly useful.

NFC

A surprising number of middle-range phones lack this feature. But not the Armor X7 Pro, and I’m incredibly grateful for it.

Headphone Jack lids

In order to withstand an hour under 1.2 meters of water, the phone is completely sealed off. That includes the headphone jack, the charger plug, and the sim tray, which are all protected by thick rubber lids. Unfortunately, said lids are difficult to open without the dedicated tool Ulefone includes in the package.

This tool, while useful, is rather small and prone to getting lost. I have resorted to knives, forks, screwdrivers, and other such tools to open them, including my own nails (which I do not recommend).

Sadly, on a couple of occasions where my nails were trimmed and I had nothing pointy with me, I could open the headphone jack at all and resigned myself to just listening to the surroundings.

Though I understand the importance of this protection, I wish Ulefone had thought about some way of opening these lids without that tool. Or maybe even a way to carry it in the phone itself without fear of losing it.

Speakers

Oh my god are they loud! I really haven’t used my wireless speakers since I have this phone. Of course, it doesn’t have the same quality or sound level, but it’s more than enough for most situations.

Why I recommend the Ulefone Armor X7 Pro

Simply put, this is a phone for people that don’t want to worry at all about their phones. Which isn’t a new concept at all. The market for minimalist phones is growing as people realize that some device’s specs are so good they end up getting into the way of life.

And, while the Armor X7 Pro probably wasn’t designed with this in mind, it achieves it in an awesome and unique way.

First of all, its specs are good enough for the vast majority of tasks people normally need their phones to perform, while at the same time not being so appealing that they demand your constant attention.

Use it normally and you’ll have no problems, use it intensely and its shortcomings will start to annoy you. It might not be ideal, but it’s a great way to reduce your screen time (at least when you don’t have to write a review about it).

On the other hand, its ridiculous resistance to water, falls, pressure, and temperature, makes it so I don’t have to worry about breaking the thing. I’m not a particularly clumsy person, but I have been known to break a phone or two, so this is important to me.

Now, with the Armor X7 Pro, I just leave my phone anywhere, with almost no worries about its safety. If it can go through the 29 tests needed to get the MIL-STD-810G certification, It can withstand a fall while I’m riding my bike, the playful (and sticky) hands of my nephews, or having a pint of beer accidentally poured over it on a Friday night.

As long as it doesn’t get stolen, it will probably be with me for however long I want it to.

And I got all of this for just over a 100 euros on eBay -you can get it cheaper in Banggood, if you are willing to wait a bit longer. Really, I don’t think theres another phone that can deliver all of this by that price.

Weekend Away

Alan and Elizabeth sat talking as they had a drink on their balcony, taking in the surprisingly cool summer evening.

"Alan, it's been so long since we've gotten away for a few days. With the long holiday weekend coming up, what do you think about driving in to the city for the weekend?"

"That'll be to expensive for us Elizabeth. Especially trying to find a room this late, its already Thursday."

"Actually I was using this new app a friend mine told me about," Elizabeth replied as she reached for her tablet. "The app has ads, I usually just ignore them but one caught my eye," she continued as she unlocked the tablet. "Check this out," she said as she handed the tablet to him.

Allan reluctantly took the tablet and looked at the screen. The website was one of those bargain hotel sites with an ad for a new resort about 4 hours west of where they lived. They were offering a multi-room suite for only $75 a night. "You know this is a scam right? They can't afford to rent that room for that price."

"Actually it's totally legit. I called the hotel directly and talked to the manager. They're new and trying to get the word out with how competitive the market is it has been hard to draw from other places. So they're putting this rate out there on the discount sites to put them ahead of the competition and get extra attention."

"You're serious?"

"I already booked the room, checkin is noon. We leave first thing in the morning."

"You're serious aren't you?"

"My bags are already packed, I started a bag for you of the basics necessities. All you have to do is pick out a couple shirts and a couple pairs of pants. I've already got swimwear for both of us in my bag."

Alan couldn't believe what he was hearing, but he knew her well enough to know she wasn't bluffing. "Then I better for finish my bag I guess," he replied before finishing his drink and heading inside.

As the balcony door closed behind him, Elizabeth opened the new app on her tablet, clicked a few keystrokes and closed the app. Then she got up and headed inside to help her husband pack.

With the long drive in the morning, the couple went to bed early. Alan curled up around his wife and whispered, "How did I get so lucky?" before closing his eyes and they drifted off to sleep.

In the morning he awoke to find Elizabeth already dressed and doing her makeup. "You get dressed and take the bags down to the car. I'll make us a quick breakfast before we head out," she said as she closed the last of her makeup containers and got up from the tablet.

Alan took a quick shower and dressed in a polo shirt and jeans, he had just returned from the garage when Elizabeth announced that breakfast was ready. He walked in to the kitchen to find a plate sat out for him of eggs, toast and bacon along with a mug of coffee sitting at his place on the breakfast bar in their kitchen. They sat and discussed things they could do while they were away for the weekend as they ate. They made a small list of things to try to so but decided it would be more fun to try to let the weekend happen rather than over schedule it and get frustrated if problems arose.

The drive to the resort was pretty uneventful, Elizabeth had connected her tablet to the car hotspot and was looking up shows in the area. "There's a couple of shows at the resort that look interesting, one is a magician and another is a ventriloquist. They don't do advanced tickets though so we will have to take our chances."

"Are they expensive? "

"$40 a seat for general admission, it goes up if we want reserved seating."

"We'll see what the lines are like."

"Sounds good Honey."

They grabbed a quick lunch when they hit town and headed to the resort to check in.

The desk clerk gave them a full schedule of the amenities and events. When the clerk saw that their room had been booked through the app ad she also gave them a card for a discount to attend the shows and restaurants. She handed them their key cards and said, "Enjoy your stay in the Castle Suite, its #69 on the top floor. If your phones have NFC chips in them, there is a reader in the living room by the tv. Make sure your NFC chip is on and set your phone on the reader and it will setup the locks to be opened with your phones as well as the card keys."

"Castle Suite?"

"One of the things about the deal was we didn't get to pick our room theme, they just assigned us one that was available," Elizabeth explained as they made their way to the elevators. "I would have had one of the others but this should still be fun," she added as they got on the elevator.

They discussed ideas as they rode the elevator. They decided to change into their swimsuits and check out the pools for a couple hours, then explore the hotel. Elizabeth went to the bedroom area to change while Alan went and changed in the bathroom. Elizabeth came back out of the bedroom wrapped in a wet look black one piece swimsuit as Alan emerged from the bathroom in his loose knee length trunks and a t-shirt.

"Maybe we should skip the pool," Alan said as he walked over and started rubbing his hands on the smooth fabric.

"As good as that feels, we'll have time for that later Honey," Elizabeth said as she slipped out of his grip and pulled a white t-shirt on over her suit. "I want to go enjoy the pool."

"Fine," Alan said as they each grabbed a key card for the room and headed for the pool.

As Alan closed the room door Elizabeth reached into the neck of her t-shirt and tucked her key card into the cleavage of her swimsuit. "If you're good, I'll let you retrieve my key when we get back to the room," Elizabeth said as they approached the elevators. "With one condition of course," she added as the elevator doors opened.

"What condition?" Alan asked as they got on the elevator.

"No using your hands of course," Elizabeth pretended to whisper in his ear but made sure she was still loud enough to be heard by the rest of the people in the elevator. She failed to stifle a giggle as she saw his face turning bright red.

About that time the elevator stopped and some more people got on the elevator so Elizabeth behaved herself for the rest of the ride down to the pool area.

Alan was sore from the car ride so he headed to the hot tub to relax, Elizabeth went to try out a few of the water slides. As he soaked and watched Elizabeth he noticed that the slides were causing her suit to ride up, allowing the folds of her womanhood to be seen through the thin fabric. A couple of guys on the ladder to the top of the next slide seemed to be enjoying the view as they followed her at a distance up the ladder. As they reached the top of the stairs the two men grabbed Elizabeth and pulled her to the floor of the platform. Alan was shocked to see the lifeguard doing nothing about this as Elizabeth called for help. He tried to move but his body was frozen. It wasn't long before he saw her suit, which looked like it had been ripped in several places was thrown from the top of the platform. Why wasn't anyone doing anything to stop this he was thinking as he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Honey, are you alright?"

He turned to see Elizabeth with her hand on his shoulder and still wearing her swimsuit kneeling beside him with a worried expression on her face. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said as he couldn't believe it had been a daydream, it was so vivid. "Why?"

"I got worried you'd been in here to long. I tried waving at you from the top of the slide but you just stared blankly at me."

"Sorry, I was lost in thought," Alan said as he got out of the tub. "Let's go get something to drink," Alan said as he turned and headed for the drink bar at the edge of the pool area. The each got a bottle of sparkling water and sat at a table in the corner. They talked about how relaxing the afternoon had already been and thoughts for the evening as they enjoyed their drinks.

As they finished up and were dropping the empty bottles into the recycling Elizabeth spoke, "Why don't you get us each one more while I grab our shirts. We can take them up to the room and relax for a bit before dinner. I want to look at those discounts they gave up."

"Sounds good," Alan said as he watched her walking away, enjoying the view of her derriere in the skin tight fabric of her suit. She was half way to their shirts before he snapped himself out of it and went to the bar to get a couple more waters.

He handed the bottles to Elizabeth upon her return and took his shirt, pulling it on. She reached over and took his hand as they walked to the elevators. She didn't let it go until they were back in the room.

"Why don't you slip out of that wet suit, then see if you can find something to watch on tv. I'm going to take a quick shower so my hair can dry before dinner," Elizabeth said as she pulled her arms into her shirt.

Alan slipped out of his trunks and pulled off his t-shirt, tossing them in the bathroom. He wrapped himself in a towel before heading to the living room area of the suite.

As he picked up the remote and sat in the recliner he saw Elizabeth coming back out of the bedroom. She was still dressed in the t- shirt she'd worn as a cover up, her swimsuit was in her left hand and she was had dry clothes draped over her right arm.

"I figured it was easiest to just get dressed for dinner when I'm done with my shower," Elizabeth said as she headed into the bathroom and shut the door. It was almost 40 minutes later when she emerged from the bathroom and said, "Your turn Sweety."

"Sounds good Honey," Alan said as he got up and turned toward the bathroom. He almost dropped his towel as he took in the site in front of him.

"I take it you like?" Elizabeth asked as she did a slow twirl for her husband. She was wearing 3 inch heels, her legs were wrapped in sheer nylon stockings that disappeared under a knee length black skirt that was set off by a red belt that matched the cotton blouse she had on.

"Very much," Alan said as he approached her. "Maybe we should skip dinner," he added giving her a playful wink.

Elizabeth looked at her watch and said, "We'll have time for that later. Go take a shower and get dressed, I laid an outfit out for you on the bed. I'm hungry."

"It'll have to be a cold shower now," Alan said, giving her derriere a squeeze as he walked past her and into the bathroom. He emerged a short time later to see Elizabeth relaxing in the recliner with her ear buds in. "What are you doing?" he asked as he headed for the bedroom.

"Listening to that new app while you get ready," she said in a voice that sounded like she was half asleep.

Alan headed into the bedroom and found the outfit she'd laid out for him. Alan dresses in the clothes she'd laid out. He usually wasn't one for coordinating outfits but he had to admit that his wife had great taste. He was in a pair of black khakis, with a matching belt and a red polo shirt. He slipped on his black dress shoes and headed out to the livingroom are to join Elizabeth who still had her earbuds in and looked like she was asleep.

As he walked over to check on her she opened her eyes and stretched. " Oh that felt good," Elizabeth said as she removed the earbuds from her ears. "You look great Alan," Elizabeth said as she put her earbuds back in the case and dropped it in her purse.

"Thanks, so what felt great?"

"Remember the app I mentioned where I saw the ad for this place?"

"Yeah, what about it"

"It's a relaxation app, it is pretty sweet. Listening to it can make a person feel like they've been asleep for hours. It can be a great pick me," E lizabeth said as she dropped her phone in her purse.

"Oh," was the only response Alan could come up with.

"You look great Sir," Elizabeth said as she leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Let's go check this place out and get some dinner," Elizabeth said as she wrapped her arm in his and gently nudged him toward the door.

"Sounds good," Alan said as he grabbed their key cards on the way to the door.

Elizabeth seemed to be slightly distracted to Allen as they made their way around the impressive complex. They'd seen several shows that looked interesting but the resort had a policy of not selling tickets more than 30 minutes before a show, regardless of the performer. They had this policy to combat the problem most other venues in the area had with scalpers, with such a limited window between tickets going on sale and the start of the shows it was just to risky for them.

The couple saw some possibilities they wanted to check out as the showtimes got closer, they were discussing options when they came across a restaurant called The Cove that seemed to be set apart from the rest of the food establishments. The place seemed quiet and cozy so Elizabeth pushed Alan to check it out.

As they entered they were greeted by a woman that seemed to be in her mid 20s and was dressed in a black dress that hugged her almost like a second skin. The skirt around her legs prevented her from talking much more than an 18 inch stride, which caused her to appear to almost glide across the floor a she approached them and said, "Welcome to the cove, I'm Alexis. Will it just be the two of you tonight?"

"Yes, and if it matters we were given this at checkin," Elizabeth said as she showed the Alexis the discount card.

Alan felt a chill at the grin Alexis gave at the site of the card. He couldn't be sure because her head didn't move but he could have sworn he saw Alexis looking Elizabeth up and down with her eyes as she smiled and said, "Actually that does get you a 15% discount on your bill as well as you get free access to one of our more private seating areas." She grabbed a couple of menus and lead them toward some alcoves near the back of the restaurant. "Here you go," she said as she laid the menus on the table and pulled out one of the chains. "For the lady," she said, bowing her head slightly and offering her hand to Elizabeth.

"Thank you," Elizabeth said as she took it and sat down.

The hostess helped her slide the chain in before moving to the opposite side of the table and pulling out a second chair. "For you Master," she said as she again bowed her head and held out her hand, palm up this time.

Alan reluctantly took her hand and sat down. "Ah, Thank you," he said as the hostess slid his chair in as well.

She picked up the menus, turned to Alan and asked, "does she need a menu or will Master be ordering for both of you?"

Alan starred at her in disbelief for a second. Before he could respond though Elizabeth spoke up. Keeping her head bowed she said, "I don't need a menu, Master will be ordering for me."

"Excellent, she's well trained," the hostess responded, handing him a menu and gliding away before Alan could say anything.

"What was that about?" Alan asked.

"I don't know, they seem to have some kind of dominance theme going on here," Elizabeth replied. "Did you notice anything odd about the Hostess?"

"Besides the fact that I don't think they could have painted that dress on her any tighter you mean? She could barely take a stride in that thing."

"You're close but not quite. That material stretches well, I have a few pieces of clothing of the same material. That wasn't what was limiting her strides." Alan just starred at her so she continued, "I thought I heard a jingle like sound as we were walking to the table but I wasn't sure where it was comming from. So when she was walking away I took a look at her feet and that's when I saw it."

"Saw what?"

'There's some kind of chain between her ankles, I think she's wearing some kind of ankle cuffs."

"Seriously?"

"Yeah. So when you combine that with her calling you Master, and then her asking if I'll need a menu or if you'll be ordering for me it just made sense. This place has some kind of dominance/bondage theme going on. I thought it could be fun to play along, that's why I said that you could order for me."

Alan wasn't sure what to make of this but decided it wasn't worth arguing about so he picked up the menu and began to scan it's pages. He wasn't quite sure what to order when he spotted her favorite. Having already picked out his own meal, he closed the menu and laid it back on the table. They talked until their waitress came. As she approached the table Alan noticed that she seemed to float across the floor just like the hostess did so he looked down. He couldn't be sure but he was fairly certain he saw a chain between her feet as well. He'd considered just saying their orders but inspiration struck as she approached the table so he waived the waitress in close. When she leaned in he whispered the order to her.

The waitress punched things in on a tablet as Alan spoke. When he finished the waitress stood and said, "Excellent choices Sir, will there be anything else?"

"That will be all."

As the waitress turned to walk away, Alan heard a very faint chain jingle and he confirmed his wife was right about the theme.

"So what did you order me?"

Elizabeth felt a surprising tingle down her spine as Alan responded, "You'll have to wait and see Slave." She was surprised to see him getting that into character. While they'd never experimented with that kind of thing in their relationship, nor had she done that with any of her previous boyfriends Elizabeth couldn't deny the tingles it was causing all over her body.

Their conversation returned mostly to normal as they discussed ideas for the weekend while they waited for their food. They were interrupted once by the waitress bringing their beverages, but otherwise it was a great conversation.

Elizabeth felt a shiver of anticipation as the waitress approached them with their food. The tray was set on a table behind her so she couldn't see what he had ordered either of them. The waitress brought Alan his food first, a sirloin steak and a baked potato. The shiver intensified as the waitress glided behind Elizabeth to retrieve the rest of the meal. The anticipation grew even more when instead of bringing her meal the waitress returned with a small tray of steak sauce cups and topping options for his baked potato. Her eyes grew wide insuprise as the waitress returned with a plate of grilled chicken and broccoli cheese pasta and placed it in front of Elizabeth.

As she stared at her meal the waitress turned to Alan and asked, "Will there be anything else?"

"That will be all, you may go."

"You're getting into this aren't you?" Elizabeth asked, flashing Alan a grin as the waitress walked away.

"Its not exactly my thing, but it's fun for something different," Alan replied as he started to cut his steak.

The two of them ate mostly in silence. They finished up their meal and theit plates had just been cleared when a man wearing a black suit and glasses approached the table. As he came to a stop next to their table Elizabeth felt a shiver travel up her entire body, as it faded she realized that she couldn't move from the neck down.

"Greetings, my name is Mr. Smith. I'm the owner of the resort. How was your meal?"

"Very good, thank you," Alan replied. "Its quite the place you have here."

"I'm glad you like it, mind if I sit down?"

"Go ahead," Alan replied as he gestured towards the open chair.

Elizabeth felt a stirring in her hips as the man sat down. Something just felt wrong about all of this, she tried to object but found her lips wouldn't move.

"Thank you," he said as he took a seat. "The hostess mentioned the card your wife showed when you arrived tonight."

"Its no big deal, just something they gave us at the front desk when we checked in," Alan responded.

"Actually it's more than just some card. The ad that offers that package only runs in one place. It's an ad that's part of a relaxation app I wrote a few years ago. This is the first time someone has booked a stay with us through that ad so as a taken of my appreciation I've decided to comp your check for tonight. Your dinner is on the house."

"That's extremely generous of you Sir, Thank you," Alan said as he reached out to shake the man's hand.

Elizabeth didn't know why but something about this scene made her want to scream "stop, don't do it" as their hands came together but her mouth wouldn't respond. She just sat their watching as her husband's hand slowly gripped Mr. Smith's hand and shook it.

"You're welcome you idiot," Mr Smith said with an evil grin as he saw the shocked expression semi frozen on Alan's face. He lowered Alan's hand back to the surface of the table and released it. "Much better, this goes so much easier this way," he added as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a plastic bag. He opened the bag and dropped the gloves he'd been wearing into it and sealed it. "I gave you a mild neural inhibitor, the effects will wear off in about 15 minutes." He turned to face Elizabeth and said, "I need to talk with your husband privately so I need you to sleep."

Elizabeth suddenly felt all the energy drain from her body, she was barely able to get her arms folded and lay her head down on her hands before everything went black.

Satisfied that she was out of the way, he turned back to face Alan and said, "That's better. Are you still able to blink?"

Alan wasn't sure what was happening but he tried to move his eyes and found that he could still blink.

Some of these fantasies made the other stories seem tame by comparison. They were all fantasies of my wife being controlled by other men. Even my wife didn't know about these fantasies, if the contents of this file got out I would be ruined. Not only would my wife leave me but it would be a severe violation of the ethics clause in my employment contract and any violations of that clause meant immediate termination.

"Now that you're grasping the situation better I'm betting you want to know what I want to make this go away, don't you?"

I gave him one slow blink, figuring that was the way he'd had me say yes in the past.

"I'm going to count to three, if you haven't made your choice before I reach three, it will be a default to choice one and I'll hit send." He took a deep breath before saying, "one." He took another deep breath and said, "two."

He took another deep breath and started moving his finger towards the send button before Alan caved and gave him two blinks.

"I actually thought you were going to let me send the message," he said with an evil chuckle as he pulled his finger away from the button. "You made a wise choice," he said as he turned the clone phone off and put it in his pocket. "I'll take good care of her," he said as he reached over and tapped Elizabeth on the back of her neck three times.

She slowly sat up in her chair. Her eyelids fluttered a few times as she said in a monotone voice, "bootup sequence engaged, running diagnostics." She sat basically motionless for a few seconds before her eyes slowly opened. When they finally did it was a little freaky, they didn't have their usual life to them. She just looked straight ahead with a cold, blank stare for a few seconds. It was at least a full minute after her eyes opened before she spoke, "Fembot unit E44D is online, all systems are operating within normal parameters. How may unit E44D serve you Master?"

He got up and moved around to her side of the table. Taking hold of the back of her chair he said, "Stand up."

"Affirmative," she replied as he helped her slide her chair back and she rose to her feet.

"Follow me," he said as he turned and started to walk away.

Alan watched helplessly as Elizabeth followed him out of his line of sight. Frozen as he was, he had no real sense of how much time had passed before he felt his ability to move returning to him. The first thing he did was to grab his phone and try to call 911 to report Elizabeth's kidnapping, his heart sank when he got an error message on the screen that read:

That number has been blocked on this phone for the duration of your stay here. DO NOT attempt to call it again or you will face discipline.

"SHIT!" he exclaimed as the message faded off the screen. He tried to search for the direct line to the local police department when he received another warning:

Unable to display search results, you are not authorized to have this information. Cease all further attempts to interfere or else. This is your only warning.

This time there was a thumbnail image in the bottom of the screen, Alan nervously clicked on it. He almost dropped his phone in shock as the picture enlarged to fill the screen. If you rarely open the camera app, here are many things you will enjoy. Despite its plasticky construction, the N200 5G does not feel like a cheap phone. Its narrow frame fits very well on my palm, although with the thumb it’s hard to reach 6.49-inch screen parts. The screen has thin bezels and a perforated selfie camera, so it looks pretty modern.

The glossy blue gradient on the matte plastic back gives it an air of elegance, but you may want to hit a sleeve: the coating picked up some weird stains for a few weeks and I can’t remove them. In terms of water resistance, the North N200 comes to a minimum with an IPX2 rating; it can withstand a few splashes of water (think the rain is mild) but not much else.

There’s a USB Type C charging port, a MicroSD card slot to expand the 64 gigabytes of built-in storage, a headphone jack, an NFC chip for contactless payments, and a reliable fingerprint sensor on the side phone power button. It’s still an LCD screen, so you don’t get the blacks or the ever-visible screen that OLED panels offer, but the screen has a screen refresh rate of 90 Hz. By increasing this refresh rate to 90, you now see 90 frames per second; from scrolling through Instagram to playing, it feels a little softer. High-end phones offer 120 Hz displays, but the N200 is one of the cheapest phones in the United States with fairly close specifications. Even 90 Hz is a big improvement.

Combine this specification with surprisingly decent performance thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G chip and you’ll get a phone that can handle most tasks well. Even games like The High Odyssey i Nails forever it worked very well. That said, the small amount of RAM (only 4 gigabytes) shows its limitations. You will frequently suffer decelerations. Off Grid Development blog 8.11.2017 - Changing Times!

The times-they-are-a-changin.’ New horizons, a shake up, big things happening - this has been a heck of a sprint!

Blocktober

Completely unaware of our social media surroundings, Rich managed to spend a good portion of this sprint during October whiteboxing and completely miss the whiteboxing trend on Twitter that was #Blocktober! Nothing nearly as fancy as the timelapsed art passes from the Naughtly Dog team on how they constructed key hero sequences in the latest Uncharted, but we do have a new building for the intro scene in the player’s apartment. If you haven’t seen this yet at a demo I won’t give away any spoilers, but this level is where your hacking journey begins!

Indies Unplayed

We were extremely fortunate to be asked along to Indies Unplayed at Secret Weapon Loading Bar in Stratford. It’s always great to show the game and get player feedback. Many thanks to Lauren Francis for having us along, it was a very cool little event and we had some really inspiring titles along side us. Below you can see a player learning the setup to our hero’s story in the intro cutscene we are currently making playable.

We got to play some fun new indie games and catch up with some old friends too, including old chum Tim Constant, who we last saw at Nottingham Gamecity in 2013!!!

Tim is working on a very cool dystopian job sim. It’s a #PapersPlease-like game, where you play an immigrant bouncer in a post-Brexit apocalypse:

‘Settings’ it up

It’s been quite short and quick sprint, so there are no new amazing game features to talk about from Pontus. But as promised, our settings system has now evolved from a bunch of background systems and code into an actual menu. With some actual settings you can adjust!

The graphics will definitely need more work, but the plan is to fill in more options and then do a second pass on the artwork and layout to make sure everything works well with the content. For now, everything is functional at least.

Web work

Apart from that, things were polished up in the web side, with some imrpovements and additions to our wiki and to automate our newsletter. That’s going to make our life easier, and hopefully also help any players/modders to find the right Lua API and instructions for how to set things up in LevelKit in the future. I would say “go and check it out” but there’s not really much interesting things in the wiki yet, at least unless you are one of the lucky ones who have access to our builds and the LevelKit already. In which case, you of course should go and check it out to get you started testing how to create your own content for the game!

No funny bugs fixed by Pontus this sprint, and no interesting game design work either. But there definitely will be next time, he’s already spent the past few days with XMind open for plotting some pretty big changes for the game…

Mod testing

This sprint Josh, our modding and level design intern, challenged himself to build a level using the modding tools. The aim was to learn how to build a typical level with a focus on the Lua scripting side of things rather than art, and then take those learnings and see where he could fill in the gaps on the wiki that he found wanting.

We’ll let him tell you a bit more himself though:

“So I started out by blocking out the map that I wanted to create. Once I had the basic level that I was happy with I got stuck in with the Lua scripting with which I managed to learn a great deal upon completion of the level.

One of my favourite parts of creating the mod was the conversations, as it was super simple to create but also great fun generating branching dialogue between characters. Following this, I began work on a guide to building a level mod which has been added to the wiki.This is something that I felt would be important for potential modders to have to help make the modding experience more accessible.

This also resulted in a few new pages being created to explain some sections not covered on the wiki yet, such as the ability to add characters to your level. This is a very exciting and interesting feature which will allow you to create many gameplay elements, from conversations to patrolling guards.

I also had the pleasure of testing the new ability to upload mods to the steam workshop using the Level-kit tools.

Shortly after that it was decided that we should create a mod level that people can download that would demonstrate some of the pre-made devices that any modder can essentially drag and drop into their own mod. It will also be playable which I will turn into an interactive tutorial of how these devices were made to help new modders create their own from scratch.”

Farewell Harry

Harry had his last sprint with us this month as he is moving to join the development team at Unity, but we made sure he had time to part with a gift for any of our followers who are devs interested in making their games moddable too.

In his time on the team, Harry's done great work pushing modding in Unity 3d, and so we’ve open sourced his work on the Lua framework that makes Off Grid moddable, enjoy!

Steve comes with a bundle of AAA and Indie experience, so much so that he qualifies for ‘industry veteran’ status, and we are pumped to have him aboard the good ship Semaeopus. I’ll stop rambling and let him introduce himself though:

Hello! I’m new here. I’ve joined the Off Grid team as a programmer, though will no doubt stick my nose in elsewhere. I’ve been programming games for, well, rather a long time, and am really excited to be part of the project. There’s lots of interesting stuff that still needs to be done and it’s already been a welcome change from the larger, corporate games I’ve been working on over the last few years. And who knows, next time I write one of these updates I might have done some work! - Steve

You’ll hear a lot more from Steve in the coming sprints, he’s already made good strides into impletmenting and extending new features in the Lua API for modders to play with, so watch this space!

Fixes and additions

Harry’s last couple of weeks were also a great opportunity for us to dig into some of the bugs in our backlog that haven’t been top priority, but would be welcome fixes with a little effort. We had a fantastic flurry of small fixes from the team, with Harry leading the charge.

Main game:

Messaging with CryptoChat

We setup a small notification to say that a character is typeing while you are waiting for them to respond to you in a conversation. It’s essentially a ‘Smedley is typing’ animation much like you’d see when using a messaging app like whatsapp or imessage.

We also and fixed the pause time between messages, which just needed a little finessing to feel more real.

And most importantly, we set up ‘B’ to skip single messages instead of all of the incoming messages from another character.

Include Mods in use, in save games

We now have save games recording what mods you have subsribed to so you can progress with your mods intact!

Saving NFC

NFC data is now being saved correctly.

Trailer video

We fixed a strange long wait at the end of our trailer that had been bugging us.

Player Phone

We fixed a bug to do with interactions when the player phone didn't appear when doing swipe interaction or scanning things.

Stuck Running

We had a somewhat funny but awkward bug in our animation state machine where the player can get stuck if you were crawling and spammed the run button while getting up - the player would get stuck runnning in circles! That is now fixed ;)

Look around you

The player character’s look-at IK needed more restriction on target height so that you didnt look at interesting objects on the floors above or below you.

Invisible walls and soft bathroom sinks

Lots of missing colliders were fixed.

LevelKit:

UV Warning

We updated asset importer post processing script to warn about missing normals and UVs on new models. This means as you are modding and making new geometry, the LevelKit tool will tell you if it is missing anything that could cause a later error.

Mod Content structure

We re-structured level directories so that the content a modder makes is in a neater structure.

Non Steam works / DRM free mod exports

Added Export as Zip option to build tab so that you can upload your mod anywhere for anyone (with a copy of the game) to try it out.

Jon Runyan Jr., Packers’ 6th-round pick in NFL draft, accidentally declines team’s call

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Jon Runyan Jr. was in the middle of a text exchange with his agent, Ken Sarnoff, when his phone screen switched to an incoming call. Unfortunately for the draft hopeful from the University of Michigan, his texting thumb just happened to be in the area where the bright red “decline” button illuminated.

A panic came over him.

“I declined a call from Green Bay, Wisconsin,” Runyan said. “I tried to call back and my call didn’t go through, and I had no idea what I just did.”

Only seconds later, they called back.

It was the Green Bay Packers, who intended to take him with the 192nd overall pick (a sixth-round selection) on Saturday in the NFL draft.

Runyan seemed destined for the NFL. He’s following the path of his father, Jon Sr., a 14-year NFL veteran at tackle who started 192 games and made a Pro Bowl — and also played at Michigan.

“He’s always been really hands-off with everything,” Jon Jr. said. “He’s always been there as a resource for me, kind of an invaluable resource. Something that not a lot of people get, obviously. Like he just told me a couple minutes ago, ‘The work is just starting.’ Everything I’ve done throughout my career has been reset. Now, fortunately I have this opportunity to go out to Green Bay and prove myself at the next level, and I couldn’t be more excited about that.”

Jon Jr. was in seventh grade when his dad retired from the NFL in 2009, he regularly hung out in the locker room and was even in the stands for an iconic Eagles-Packers game — the Packers’ collapse on fourth-and-26 in a 2003 NFC divisional game in Philadelphia.

“Going in the locker room, I got to be around guys, Hall of Famers like Brian Dawkins, Brian Westbrook, Donovan McNabb, Terrell Owens,” he said. “Those guys really changed the Eagles franchise and made it into what it is now. Just idolizing them and seeing how much work I put in kind of through the viewpoint that I got, being around them and looking up to them and my father and one day wanting to be them, that helped add motivation and passion and drive to what I was doing. Growing up with my father in the NFL has been a blessing. I know he’s looking at me right now, and he’s happy.”

Unlike his father, Runyan is likely to play guard — not tackle — for the Packers. He also said he has no interest in a post-football career like that of his dad, who served two terms in Congress representing New Jersey’s 3rd District and now works for the NFL as vice president of policy and rules administration.

“He served two terms as a United States rep in New Jersey; it’s just an unbelievable achievement,” he said. “Honestly, I’m just so amazed that he was able to do that. … My dad, he’s really big on public service. That’s the thing he really liked about being a representative, but he did not enjoy the politics side of being a congressman; that’s why he got out of it. You could see the stress on his face whenever he’d come home after a month or two. He loved helping people, but he really did not like dealing with all the politics of it. I just think I’ll observe politics from afar, for sure.”

Apple's new iPhone 10s is a modest step up from last year's iPhone 10 but for anyone who's running anything other than the ten it's a major leap forward the 10s comes in at the exact same premium price but you get quite a few more features mostly attached to the camera but also added performance extra RAM dual SIM and better cellular connectivity however there's a major problem with the iPhone 10 s it feels just like last year's iPhone 10 and if you're gonna spend another grand you want to feel a difference sure it does have a new gold finish but a lot of people use cases anyways there's also the larger 10s max which we think changes the whole game so we made a completely separate review for that As for the iPhone 10s we don't recommend buying it if you've already got the 10 unless you've got a pretty thick wallet but for everyone else let's dig deep and see what's so special about the new iPhone let's start with the biggest and most valuable change the camera system. Apple mentioned a new bigger sensor on the wide lens with deeper pixels which means more pixel well depth which allows each pixel to store more photons basically light before it saturates and starts leaking electrons to neighboring pixels which is basically what you know as noise deeper pixels also make for better color saturation and increased dynamic range just check out these two photos as you can see the 10s gets less noise much better colors in a huge jump in dynamic range but that's not only due to the deeper pixels you can also thank apple's new smart HDR feature in short the camera is able to snap more photos at different exposures in a shorter amount of time so that you don't get any motion blur it then merges the dark images with the brighter images to get seriously impressive dynamic range We're talking high-end camera dynamic range for a quick example you can see a bright hot spot on the ceiling on the iPhone tends image as well as a dark spot under the vase the iPhone 10 S is able to keep the image looking balanced and natural and the colors look way better as well and you'll see some of those same improvements in video as well as long as you're not shooting at 60 frames per second plus you finally get stereo audio recording the camera is also a heck of a lot smarter now that the knurl in which we'll get into later works with the image signal processor doing things like making portrait mode blur more accurate speaking of portrait mode there's the new depth control feature this might remind you of other phones like the galaxy note 9 but with the 10s it's basically been perfected with a much greater range of blur adjustment and it doesn't just increase the size of the bokeh it wraps directional in relation to where it's at in the frame just like a professional camera lens Apple mentioned the speed of face ID is improved on the 10s but to be completely honest it still feels the same as an iPhone 10 on iOS 12 which isn't a bad thing it's already incredibly quick considering everything it's doing when we compared the note 9 to the iPhone 10 it seemed like Samsung has finally cut up in terms of performance almost exactly a month later we've got the 10s with the new a12 Bionic chip built on a new 7 nanometer process leading to more performance while using less power in terms of the CPU there's honestly not that much of a difference but looking at graphics we see a really nice performance jump this will help for everything from rendering apps to augmented reality scenes and games the new 8 core Neural engine can now process 5 trillion operations per second up from 600 billion with the Elevens neural engine which helps pave the way for the future of machine learning. In terms of actual daily use anyone coming from an iPhone 10 or 8 won't notice much of a difference besides camera improvements and maybe gaming performance improvements the display on the iPhone 10s is pretty much identical to the iPhone 10 but the OLED display is leaps and bounds better than any LCD based I phone display now here's a really cool feature the tennis now has dual SIM which doesn't mean much to a lot of people but anyone who wants to different plans or is using two different phones for two different reasons this might make the 10s worth it by itself the radios have also been upgraded with gigabit LTE and you can visually see the difference with new bands on the top and bottom of the iPhone 10's tests showed that the performance difference can be significant but we tested this in our office and we got identical LTE speeds and I still got the same three bars of t-mobile service so the improvements assume your signal and network is strong enough to allow LTE speeds high There's also a new feature called Express cards with power reserved this means that if your battery dies you can still use your phone to get onto the subway bus or enter your building if they support NFC based access on that no battery life is rated at 30 minutes longer than the iPhone 10 but if you really care about that get the 10s max with an hour and a half longer battery life the included 5 watt charger is a joke when you're paying $1000 especially when Apple teases you with fast charging support which requires a power adapter from a macbook the 10s also doesn't come with the Lightning the headphone jack adapter which is disappointing for some but I use ear pods so I could care less all in all when directly compared to the iPhone 10 the iPhone 10's is a modest upgrade with significant improvements to the camera is it worth dropping another thousand bucks this year not unless you have too much money to care now if you're going from anything other than the iPhones hand we think you're seriously gonna love the iPhone 10's sure you're used to the home button but it's a sacrifice you're gonna have to make within a couple of years anyways now if you're coming from a 7 plus or an 8 plus We think the 10s max and its massive screen is perfect for you but if you don't want that large of a phone anymore don't worry that 10s 'kiss the same exact camera system if paying a thousand dollars for a phone sounds like too much for you you're probably best waiting for the iPhone 10 R as it offers more colors and many of the benefits of the iPhone 10s including portrait mode with depth control however it still got an LCD display with less than 1080p resolution last year Apple made a giant leap forward with the iPhone 10 and its success completely shook up this year's iPhone lineup the 10s on the other hand isn't another giant leap but it's continuing down the path of Apple's brilliant rethinking of the entire iPhone platform with significant camera improvements thrown into the mix for good measure so if you're someone who skipped the iPhone 10 its a giant leap indeed and seeing as it's got the same thousand dollar price tag you should be more than happy that you waited for the 10s I know I am thanks for watching guys we've got a whole bunch of iPhone 10s and Apple watch series for videos in the pipeline so make sure to subscribe if you haven't already because we've got some pretty interesting stuff coming soon trust me if you enjoyed this video like it and hit that scribe button also check out a price guide which makes it extremely easy to find the best deals and Apple products updated daily be sure to follow us on social media and we'll see you in the next video
