It’s difficult to describe what it’s like to be in the magnetic orbit of Ms. Reneé Rapp. What can you say about a girl who was an icon the moment she arrived? After two seconds in her presence, I immediately thought, This is the most confident, hilarious, fascinating, and effortlessly talented person I’ve ever met. And honey? In my 25 years in Hollywood, I’ve met just about everyone. When Reneé is onscreen, it’s simply impossible to look anywhere else—her talent is innate and her charisma is palpable. When she opens her mouth to sing, what comes out is jaw-droppingly pure and powerful. But it’s when Reneé is just being Reneé that her real superpower shines. She is unapologetically herself. She has no need for a filter because she stands firmly rooted in her beliefs and laser-focused on her vision. I may have played her cool mom in Mean Girls, but there’s a reason why, at age 24, Reneé is literally mother. —Busy Philipps on Reneé Rapp for TIME100 Next 2024

Louis XIII and his cooking adventures 🍴🥞
When it comes to our Louis XIII cult, I often refer to the king's iconic omelettes, but what about his other stuff? For example, he really loved sweets (like beignets or jams), but could he also cook them? The answer is YES, and that's not even all yet!
Louis was a curious child who's head was already filled with various interests and cooking became one of them when he was only ten years old at the time (which is quite unusual for a king). First ever case of the king cooking was recorded on february 11th of 1611, when he was preparing milk soups for the Duchess of Guise / Catherine of Cleves. So milk soup, most likely, could be Louis' very first dish made by himself!
Of course many kids have a sweet tooth and our precious omelette king was not an exception which I guess is why he started to learn how to cook mostly from recipes of sweets. Also, take a shot every time I say "sweets" or "cooking" (don't..) 🕊️
So, among 17th century royal sw- *ahem* DESSERTS we had in our menu – a jam, quince jelly, beignets (basically french donuts) and marzipans. In a well-known, among many of y'all Louis stalkers, journal of his doctor Jean Héroard I found some clear evidence of Louis XIII cooking some of these himself, so here it is feat. me periodically panicking over my own translation because my half-french friend is too busy atm and I don’t wanna bother them:
June 6th, 1611 — «He walks through the corridor from the study to the paneled gallery where he had an oven for making jams, he is amused to see how it's done.» I know it's not exactly him cooking, but I just wanted to leave it here :")
October 15th, 1612 — «Madame comes to see him; he has fun making jam with Mademoiselle de Vendôme»
January 29th, 1613 — «He often has fun making almond milk and marzipans at Madame's house.»
March 6th, 1615 — «It was very cold; he goes to the kitchen, makes omelettes, beignets, fried eggs; it was he who made them and ate a little of that he tasted.» Pretty sure the last few words could be translated better because it's always rather my terrible french or a little confusing way of Héroard's writing, so feel free to correct me.
February 3rd, 1616 — «He is preparing a small snack of dry jam for the queen, who must come to him at two o'clock. After going back to bed, he happily forms various battalions of his little silver men.»
February 5th, 1622 — «He leaves Saint-Germain, goes to Pontoise, where he enjoys making and eating beignets; while dining at Cormeille, he suddenly goes to the goblet in which he makes little cream puffs.» The original text says «petits choux au lait» and I have no idea what could that exactly be, but it seems like some sort of little éclair-like buns made of milk? Little cream puffs?? Maybe by «choux au lait» Jean meant «choux à la crème» which were invented back in 1540 in France.
I know you've been waiting for the quince jelly too, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything about the jelly :c Though, judging by what we've got here It's still quite possible Louis could cook quince jelly as well, hmm... Anyways, if you know something I don't know of the jelly mystery, hit me up!
In the future, this great love for desserts will be inherited by his son Philippe I, Duke of Orléans (brother of Louis XIV), who is also a very interesting character in history!!
In conclusion I must say that Louis not only had a sweet tooth, but also a big love for trying out different things, all this curiosity and pure excitement, even when it comes to something so simple and familiar like food, will never ever stop to fascinate me :"D
Btw speaking about Louis 'trying out different things', I of course still have a lot to share on this as well! Stay tuned and have a good day/night 💘💘💘
#I can't believe I wasted more time on the picture than the post itself#But at least now I can go make more Louis content :“”D#In my next post I will most likely cover something that is not food because he had A LOT of other talents obviously hahahaah#Honestly I could talk about him 24/7.... I just can't always be online to flood you with all this :“(#17th century#louis xiii#history of food#louis xiii le juste#king louis xiii

“Cease and desist, bitch!”
News flash friends: job hunting is still terrible. Like, four months in and it’s still the worst. I finished two interview loops recently and I’m waiting to hear back and I have two others I’m trying to get through and it’s all hurry up and wait.
But then Netflix told me that GIRLS5EVA was coming to the platform, complete with a new season, and I got soooo excited.
I’m sure no one has heard of this show, it was born on Peacock and it’s a Tina Fey joint but there’s definitely a super specific audience for it which is, basically, me.
Were you born in the 80’s/early 90’s? Did you love all the random girl groups/boybands? Are you now barreling toward 40 and it’s just really depressing and terrible? Then Girls5eva is also for you.
Wherein, four millennial women decide to reunite their early 2000’s girl group after their one-hit wonder is sampled on a new hip hop track.
It’s hilarious. And really specific. And starring SARA BAREILLES who in real life is an incredible musician. Y’all remember “Gravity”? No? Even though it was featured in a Community episode where Annie cuts to a montage because she’s trying to convince everyone that she and Jeff have had a ‘will-they-won’t-they’ thing going on all year? “Gravity” is the theme of that montage!
While you’re checking out Girls5eva, also listen to Sara Bareilles. The girl is a true fucking talent.
ALSO, Busy Philipps. I LOVE Busy Philipps. And have loved her since Dawson’s freakin’ Creek and then AGAIN in Cougartown.
(Side rant - Cougartown really is a wonderful show. Terrible name, but honestly incredibly funny and there are a ton of good running jokes and it’s just fun as hell. Courteney Cox got shagged on that one, it really is a gem.)
Anyway. There are 3 seasons and it follows the ladies valiantly trying to make a comeback while dealing with being normal people again after their brief shot at fame in the early 2000’s. Which, I think we all remember fondly but was actually a pretty gross time and the show makes sure you remember that - it was not great for women by any means and it’s still not great now but Girls5eva make it work. And it’s endearing.
And y’all, some of the songs are a fuckin’ bop. BPE? Aka “Big Pussy Energy” (the club remix) is the anthem we all need right now. “Kick down the doors no locks / I don't need a key / Eyes down here, yeah, I'm the centerpiece / Animal queendom feline synergy / Kickin’ down the doors, big pussy energy!” That shit gets you in the right frame of mind. I need more semi-cheesy female anthems in my life and I’m pretty sure you do too.
Honestly, the show is really just about the fact that life doesn’t have to end after your 20’s, you can keep going after your dreams even if they’re ridiculous. And you can balance your regular shit while you do it. And you don’t need a man to define who you are. And you can leave toxic relationships if you need to. And you can grow as a person. And you can still be a crazy bitch sometimes and your friends will support you.
There’s a lot going on, and it’s all wonderful. Honestly, we need more shows about olderish female friends, with a touch of insanity. I don’t want regular female friends, I want batshit female friends doing ridiculous things.
Also, lastly, Wickie Roy is a fucking icon. In a weird way because she’s struggling to live in a normal world and she refuses to compromise and she’s an absolute nutbag but in the best way possible.
Basically, Girls5eva is making me feel better about my life. If they can get back into pop music, I can get myself another boring job and BPE is gonna help me get it done.
“Momentum yeah / um it’s our moment / we’re contenders…”

title: "exclusive: interview with charles leclerc" source: charles-leclerc-fans.com author: franck anfosso format: interview (french) season: 2014, formula renault 2.0 summary: charles discusses racing in the 5h de brignoles for association jules bianchi #17, transitioning from karts to single-seaters & experiencing iconic tracks for the first time.
youtube
It was yesterday that the small Leclerc family was present on the Brignoles circuit to participate in the 5 hours of Brignoles, renamed for the occasion "Trophée Forza Jules". Masterfully organized by Yannick Iglésias (circuit director) and Philippe Bianchi, this 5-hour endurance race brought together top athletes like Charles or Armand Convers with amateur drivers from the region like the Scuderia Varoise , always in verve on the Brignolais circuit. Although the rain was present throughout the day, it is always with the same pleasure that we found the vice-champion ALPS 2014 for a few questions between two relays.
CLF: This is the first time that we have met here in Brignoles for an interview. What does this track remind you of? CL: This is the track from my debut and it really makes me happy to come back here. This time it's to support my friend Jules Bianchi during an endurance race, but as usual, I'll do my best to finish well.
CLF: Is a race like today, teaming up with your brothers, still very important to you? CL: Yes of course, even if the objective remains the same, namely victory. But what really matters is having fun and the gesture of support for my friend Jules.
CLF: You've been in motorsport for about ten years and you're only 17 years old. You are also very mature, but aren't you afraid of growing up too fast? CL: No, because I think maturity is essential in motorsport, so that's not a bad thing.
CLF: Do you still have time to see your friends and family during the season? CL: Yes, of course. Even though I have a busy schedule, I try to make sure I have some time for my friends and for myself because it is very important to know how to release the pressure of race weekends.
CLF: What do you have planned for Christmas and New Year's Day? CL: For Christmas I'll be with my family and for New Year's Day I'll go to the mountains with friends, before getting back to work for next year.
CLF: This year, your career took a completely new turn with Formula Renault 2.0. Can you explain to us what are the main differences between karting and single-seaters? CL: I think there are a lot of them because they are two very different worlds. The way of using the brakes and driving are very different, even if in essence the management of the race remains the same. The experience acquired in karting therefore helps me in single-seaters even if the driving is not the same.
CLF: From a physical point of view, what is more difficult? The single-seater or the KZ1? CL: I think from what I've seen so far it's KZ1. Maybe not at the level of the neck, but I think that at the level of the arms and the whole upper body, KZ remains the most difficult.
CLF: What is your assessment of your first season, and did you fulfill your objectives? CL: I'm quite happy, although obviously I would have preferred to win the championship. When we are up against a Nyck de Vries who is in his third year in Formula Renault 2.0, who knows a lot both the car and the tracks [...] I am still Rookie Champion and second overall with two wins at Monza is therefore a very good season. I also did three meetings in the Eurocup which went well, even if the one at Spa was more complicated because we never put our finger on the right settings. That's why I think it's a good season.
CLF: As an F1 enthusiast, how did you feel driving for the first time on legendary tracks like Monza or Spa? CL: Not much, even if it impresses a little the first time. Then we get used to it since this year we drove on a lot of current or old F1 tracks. Finally when I arrive on a circuit the objective remains the same, namely to learn the track as quickly as possible in order to know all the tricks that will allow me to go as fast as possible. And all that before qualifying and when I find myself up against people like Nyck de Vries, for example, who no longer has that problem, it's always a little more complicated.
CLF: So during your first lap, you don't have time to say to yourself "wow, I'm in Monza", or in Spa? CL: No, even if when you pass the first time in the steep slope of Spa, the compression is enormous, which you don't necessarily see from the outside. It's very impressive because it climbs a lot but after a few laps it becomes a habit.
CLF: What is your best memory of the season? CL: Monza! I won my first single-seater victory there on Saturday and I did it again the next day, so it was a great weekend!
CLF: Last month, you drove in Formula Renault 3.5 for half a day. Tell us your impressions. CL: It's a top car! I think she's perfect for me because you can be very aggressive with her and that's something that suits me totally. You feel the power a lot when you accelerate and I love that. There is also a big difference in terms of the brakes since they are made of carbon and it brakes much harder than in 2 litres.
CLF: What do you do during the off-season? CL: I will prepare myself physically for next year. I will go to Formula Medicine which takes very good care of me.
CLF: Finally, even if your manager Nicolas Todt will decide what your future holds, do you have a team that appeals to you more than another, whether in 2.0 or F3?
CL: Yes, but for the moment I prefer to remain neutral. I've already tried a few teams and I still have a few left. So I prefer not to say anything for the moment.
CLF: But you already have an idea! CL: Yes!
CLF: Thank you and see you very soon! CL: Thank you!

Bold and Stylish Gold Watches for Men
Gold watches have always been a symbol of luxury, class, and refinement. For decades, they have captured the attention of men who desire a timepiece that reflects their status, taste, and personality.
Whether you’re attending a formal event or looking to elevate your everyday look, a gold watch for men can be the ultimate accessory to make a bold statement.
This guide will take you through the journey of gold watches, covering their appeal, history, types, and key features to help you choose the best one.
1. Understanding the Appeal of Gold Watches
There is something inherently captivating about the allure of gold watches for men. The shine and richness of gold instantly elevate any outfit and add a touch of timeless elegance. Men who wear gold watches often do so to signify success and confidence, as gold watches have long been associated with wealth and prestige.
From real gold watches for men to stainless steel gold watches, there is a wide variety of options available. Solid gold watches for men are often seen as the most luxurious choice, offering unmatched elegance and exclusivity.
Whether you’re drawn to the classic yellow gold or prefer the sleek look of white gold watches for men, the appeal of these timepieces remains strong across the board.
Another trendy variation is the black and gold watches for men, which offer a modern contrast that makes the watch stand out even more.
2. The History of Gold Watches
The history of gold watches can be traced back centuries. The earliest gold watches were crafted for royalty and the elite in the 16th and 17th centuries. As gold has been considered one of the most valuable materials for thousands of years, it was a natural choice for watchmakers who wanted to create timepieces for the wealthy.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, gold watches for men became more widely accessible, though they were still seen as symbols of affluence. These early watches were often pocket watches encased in gold and adorned with intricate engravings.
With the advent of wristwatches in the early 20th century, gold watches became a popular accessory for men, symbolizing power, success, and a sense of style.
During the mid-20th century, solid gold watches for men reached their peak of popularity. Watchmakers such as Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Omega created some of the most iconic gold watches in history, many of which are still sought after today by collectors.
The introduction of rose gold added another layer of sophistication to the market, making the rose gold casio watch and similar models a coveted item for men with a taste for something unique.
3. Symbolism and Status of Gold Watches
There is no denying that gold watches for men carry an inherent symbolism. Wearing a gold watch reflects not only success and wealth but also an appreciation for craftsmanship and timeless style.
For many men, the decision to wear a real gold watch or a white gold watch is a way to express their achievements and aspirations.
Gold watches are often passed down as family heirlooms, further enhancing their status as timeless pieces. Owning a gold watch men often marks significant milestones in life, such as career achievements, anniversaries, or special occasions.
For others, the symbolism of gold watches extends beyond wealth, as they are seen as symbols of power, authority, and distinction.
Gold watches are frequently worn by political figures, celebrities, and business leaders to project an image of success and influence.
4. Types of Gold Watches for Men
When it comes to choosing the best gold watches for men, there are several types and variations to consider. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:
A. Solid Gold Watches
Solid gold watches for men are often considered the ultimate luxury item. These watches are crafted from pure gold or a high percentage of gold alloy. The richness of the metal, combined with expert craftsmanship, makes these watches stand out as symbols of true luxury.
B. Gold-Plated Watches
For those looking for the allure of gold without the hefty price tag, gold-plated watches are a popular option. These watches are made of a base metal and coated with a thin layer of gold. They offer the appearance of a gold watch at a more affordable price.
C. Rose Gold Watches
Rose gold watches for men have become increasingly popular in recent years. The warm, reddish hue of rose gold offers a distinct look that sets it apart from traditional yellow gold. Rose gold Casio watches are especially popular, blending affordability with style.
D. White Gold Watches
For men who prefer a more understated look, white gold watches provide a subtle elegance. These watches have the same luxurious appeal as yellow gold but offer a cooler, more modern aesthetic. White gold watches for men are perfect for those who want something a bit different while maintaining the prestige of a gold watch.
E. Black and Gold Watches
Black and gold watches for men are known for their bold and striking design. The contrast between the black dial or strap and the gold casing creates a stunning visual effect. These watches are ideal for men who want to make a bold style statement while still embracing the elegance of gold.
F. Stainless Steel with Gold Accents
Many modern men’s gold watches incorporate stainless steel for durability, while adding gold accents for style. This combination creates a watch that is both robust and luxurious, perfect for daily wear. Gold Casio watch mens often features this mix, providing a durable yet stylish option for those who love gold.
5. Key Features to Consider When Buying a Gold Watch
When choosing the best gold watch for men, there are several key features to keep in mind. Whether you’re investing in a real gold watch or opting for a gold-plated version, it’s important to ensure that the watch meets your style, budget, and functional needs.
A. Material
The material of the watch plays a significant role in its appearance, durability, and price. Solid gold watches for men are made from real gold, offering the highest level of luxury but also the highest cost. Gold-plated watches, on the other hand, offer the look of gold at a more affordable price point. For a modern twist, consider white gold watches for men or rose gold watches for men.
B. Movement
The movement of a watch determines how it keeps time. Gold watches can come with different types of movements, including quartz, automatic, and mechanical. Quartz movements are the most common and affordable, while automatic and mechanical movements are preferred by watch enthusiasts for their craftsmanship.
C. Brand
When investing in a gold watch, the brand matters. High-end brands like Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe are known for their craftsmanship and prestige, making their gold watches highly sought after. For more affordable yet stylish options, brands like Casio offer fantastic choices like the gold Casio watch mens or the rose gold Casio watch.
D. Water Resistance
If you plan on wearing your gold watch regularly, consider the water resistance rating. Many luxury gold watches for men offer water resistance up to certain depths, making them more practical for everyday wear, even in adverse conditions.
E. Dial and Strap
The design of the dial and strap plays a significant role in the overall appearance of the watch. Black and gold watches for men offer a sleek contrast, while white gold watches for men provide a subtler look. Consider whether you prefer a leather, metal, or silicone strap, as this will influence both comfort and style.
F. Size
The size of the watch case and strap can greatly affect how it looks and feels on your wrist. Larger watches tend to make a bolder statement, while smaller, slimmer cases offer a more classic, refined look. Be sure to try on different sizes to find the most comfortable and flattering fit for your wrist.
6. Maintaining and Caring for Your Gold Watch
Owning a gold watch men is an investment, and it requires proper care to keep it in pristine condition. Here are a few tips for maintaining your gold watch:
A. Clean Regularly
Gold is a soft metal and can easily accumulate dirt and grime over time. To keep your watch looking its best, regularly clean it with a soft cloth and a mild soap solution. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could damage the gold.
B. Store Properly
When not wearing your gold watch, store it in a protective case or watch box to prevent scratches. Keeping it away from direct sunlight and moisture will help preserve its shine and luster.
C. Service Regularly
Luxury gold watches for men often require periodic servicing to ensure they continue to function properly. This is especially true for mechanical or automatic watches, which have intricate movements that need to be maintained by a professional.
D. Avoid Extreme Conditions
While many gold watches are built to be durable, it’s best to avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, moisture, or abrasive surfaces. This will help prevent damage to both the gold exterior and the internal components of the watch.
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking for an expensive gold watch for men to commemorate a special achievement or simply want to elevate your everyday look, there’s no denying the appeal of gold watches for men.
From solid gold watches for men to more affordable options like gold-plated or stainless steel watches with gold accents, there is a wide variety of styles to choose from.
Whether you opt for a classic yellow gold, modern white gold, or bold black and gold watch, your gold timepiece will be a lasting symbol of your personal style and success.
With proper care and attention, your gold watch can become a cherished heirloom that you pass down to future generations. Whether you favor the craftsmanship of a gold Casio watch mens or the prestige of a luxury brand, investing in a gold watch is always a stylish and bold choice.

Over the last twenty years, Swiss filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe has very quietly become one of the great pop culture documentarians of our time. His zombie culture doc Doc of the Dead was one of my Best Documentaries of 2014. His doc about the shower scene in Psycho 78/52 was so comprehensive it will be shown in film schools for years to come. His doc Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist is the director in his own words telling his experiences on the classic horror film. Last year's Lynch/Oz looked at the influence The Wizard of Oz had on David Lynch's films. Now, one of the great pop culture icons of all time Williams Shatner (who just turned 93 BTW) is telling his story in his own words in Philippe's new doc You Can Call Me Bill, which is opened in limited release last week.
Alexandre O. Philippe
Having gotten to review a number of his films here, this marked my first time connecting with Mr. Philippe over zoom. As someone who addresses pop culture in my films as well as this blog, I feel like Mr. Philippe and I are cut from the same cloth with all of his films diving deep into all different areas of pop culture. We talked for about 15 minutes, but I'm sure I could've talk shop with him for hours.
Me: You have very quietly become one of the move prolific documentarians of the now. I find your films to be a thesis of what it is to be a film geek or pop culture obsessive who is fanatical about a film, filmmaker or genre. That being said, are you very selective of your subjects?
AOP: Of course. I can't make a film unless it's a topic that I'm really passionate about and can really pour myself into completely. But also there has to be the right angle, the right approach. So there's a lot of intangibles, but I'm a very intuitive filmmaker. Usually the angle, the premise, the stylistic approach comes to me very very quickly. Then it become s a question of how do we implement that? And then of course - how do we implement that within the budget we have? [laughs] So there's all the logistical questions that come into the picture that make it always challenging but always interesting.
Me: Let's talk about your new movie You Can Call Me Bill about such an iconic star, William Shatner. How did the project come about?
AOP: It came about very serendipitously. With my company Exhibit A Pictures we had worked with Legion M, which is a fan-owned company, with my film Memory: The Origins of Alien in 2019. They picked it up at Sundance along with the now-defunct Screen Media. Legion M is just an amazing company, powered by fans. So we stayed in touch. Then a couple years ago, I heard William Shatner had become their new spokesperson, so I just called David Baxter, one of the execs there, just to catch up. I very casually dropped the question "has there ever been a documentary about William Shatner" cause I was just curious. It's hard not to be curious about Shatner. He said he's been approached by a lot of documentary filmmakers over the years and he's always said no, but he said to give it a shot. So they pushed and they pushed and finally they set up a lunch and Bill agreed to meet me. I was fully prepared to pitch the project that I envisioned. He was not interested in that, he was just really interested in getting to know me, which I respect a lot. In retrospect, it's like - what a refreshing thing! It wasn't a business meeting, it was a human to human deal. The whole lunch was just talking about life, death, the universe, existential questions and then by the end of lunch it was really just "when do we start?" So it was very organic.
movie poster
Me: You previously directed Earthlings: Ugly Bags of Mostly Water, which was about Klingons and Star Trek fans. Are you, yourself, a Trekkie?
AOP: You know, I don't consider myself a Trekkie. Let me put it this way - I'm obviously very into pop culture, but I don't consume pop culture to the extent of watching every episode of something or seeking out more. I'm more interested in the aspects of pop culture that have deep resonance. So, of course, I am a Star Trek fan and I am a Star Trek admirer. I have watching most episodes of the original series. I've watched most episodes of The Next Generation. I haven't watched anything beyond that. I'm just too curious about too many things to let any universe take up too much space in my life, but that's a cautious choice. I tend to flock towards movies as opposed to series as a cautious choice, because many of the films I make are about films. So any given series, if I commit to it, I'm going to have to watch the whole thing, especially if there's a narrative arc that goes from beginning to end through several seasons. That's 50, 80, 100 movies I could've watched. Because I don't have time to re-watch movies that I need to, then I have to make those decisions. It's a long way to say, I love Star Trek, I love what Star Trek has done and continues to do to the culture. I don't consider myself to be a Trekkie, but obviously I have a lot of respect for Trekkies.
Philippe and Shatner on a Comic Con panel
Me: In contrast with other documentaries that have been made about other Star Trek cast members like Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei, where they had a ton of interviews with co-stars, friends and family, this is really the subject in their own words (similar to how you made the William Friedkin doc). Tell me about your directorial approach.
AOP: With this one, the idea really was to look at William Shatner, the man of a thousand faces and can we actually get him to take off those masks that he's worn over his storied career and reveal the man behind the masks. In order to do that I wanted to get a sort of distillation of who William Shatner is in the sense of what is he about - What are the themes that are most important to him at this point and time. He had sent me some of the lyrics to some of the songs and at the time some were not published yet. So I got a sense from that of some of the things that were really important to him. I read all of his books. So there were certain ideas that very quickly came to the surface. So I decided to shoot this in a 10,000 square foot stage completely bare, completely stripped of artifice, no set design - you're just seeing the lights and the background, the green screen and all of the stuff hanging around. So we were just going to put him alone in that kind of environment. But stylistically I wanted each chapter to invoke that chapter at hand. So it was a very designed kind of approach. We had three days of interviews. Morning session and afternoon session each day. Each session was really dedicated to a chapter. It's a bit of a risky exercise because once you're done with a chapter and you strike the set and set up for the next one, you can't go back, so you have to make sure that you're getting everything that you're going to need to get the mini-arc within that story and make sure it's going to fit within the whole flow of what you're trying to do. So there's a lot of pressure, but thankfully Bill is the ultimate storyteller. It's like driving a Rolls-Royce, you just make those little adjustments and give him what you're hoping he's going to give you and he goes there. He made it really really easy. There was no taboo subjects, he was fully willing to "boldly go anywhere" as it were. So he gave me this extraordinary materials that had to shape into the film we have now.
Me: One of my favorite documentaries of yours is The People vs. George Lucas, about the love/hate relationship that the fans have with the films. In addition to Star Trek and Star Wars, you've also made documentaries about Alien and the zombie genre as a whole. Is there any area of sci-fi or fantasy that you haven't covered yet that you'd like to?
AOP: Well the films kind of naturally come to me in mysterious ways. Right now I'm finishing a film on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The rights holders of the film contacted me about a year ago now, because the 50th anniversary is coming up. They like our films and asked if I'd be interested in making a special 50th anniversary film. I think it's a hugely important film. You can even remove the word 'horror', it is one of THE most important films - period. So it's a very different take - as you can imagine - on Texas Chainsaw. It's one of the most ambitious films we've ever made. I'm very very excited about it. That's what's next. There are other projects that are sort of in the works. There will be more Hitchcock, for sure! I tend to not think too far into the future. It's not about checking boxes, but it's about what makes sense within the context of the body of work, and what is this thing I'm really most curious about, or the approach that I want to take on, and the journey itself is always a little bit surprising.
Me: In 1992, I attended a Star Trek Convention where both William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy recounting stories together onstage. I was a little surprised you didn't cover more of his connection to the fan culture. I was curious if that was cut for time or if that was a directorial choice to not get into the fan culture in this?
AOP: Yes, it was a choice. Again, the film and the premise always dictate to me what is included in the film and what's excluded. There's really a hundred ways that you can make a film about William Shatner. This for me had to be a philosophical film in a way. It's not a film about Star Trek, it's not a film about culture, it's not a film about his legacy and it's not a film about the fans or his relationship with the fans. It's a film about what he has learned on this earthly plane over 93 years and what he wants to share with future generations. In a way, it's communicating with the fans but in a different way. It is about him. What's been really cool, the film premiered at South By Southwest last year and I've had the opportunity to tour around the world with the film and interact with fans and Trekkies and almost universally they're surprised in a positive way. Like "this is not at all the film I was expecting, but I got so much out of it". So for all these fans, now they get a glimpse at the man himself. So it's great that it is resonating with the fans.

The Story of Christian Louboutin’s Red Sole
DATE: 07/15/2022
What if I told you that the story of Christian Louboutin’s red sole started with…nail polish? With simple beginnings in 1991, Louboutin was about to launch a trademark look for the fashion industry, and it came from simple inspiration—and a little luck. Here’s the story behind Louboutin’s red sole, plus a few more reasons to love his heels as much as I do!
What inspired the red heel?
Tell the truth: when you catch a flash of Christian Louboutin’s trademark red sole while, say, out for a walk, what images pop into your head? Luxury? Royalty? Riches? Well it makes sense, since red heels have quite the royal history, dating back to French monarchy and in particular, King Louis XIV.
As the story goes, Louis’ younger brother Philippe d’Orléans – who for some reason was raised as a girl – was out walking the streets of Paris when his heels became stained with a red color. Attracted as he was to the look, he went home and is said to have painted all his heels red, only for his older brother to adopt the style himself.
Soon, the red heel would gain a permanent place in history thanks to Louis’ own narcissism, which saw him pass an edict that meant only nobility could wear heels, and only allowed those in his favor to wear red heels at that—apparently, the higher the heel, the more favored the wearer.
In fact, according to Philip Mansel – a historian with knowledge on the subject – the color red “demonstrate[d] that the nobles did not dirty their shoes”, and impressed upon the lower classes the idea that noble-persons “were always ready to crush the enemies of the State at their feet.”
Not that it lasted—soon the style fell out of fashion with the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette’s beheading, where she has been recorded as wearing a pair 2-inch heels to the guillotine.
While red heels had become unpopular for some time afterward – so much so that the phrase “red-heeled” was for a while considered derogatory in the UK – we know now that this ‘royal’ and dramatic history has nothing to do with how Christian Louboutin came to build his brand identity around the eye-popping red sole we know today!
Red Soles and Nail Polish
In 1993, after being in business for two years, it is said that Christian Louboutin released his latest collection of shoes a few weeks late. The idea had been to create a shoe inspired by close acquaintance (and party buddy) Andy Warhol’s painting, Flowers—and yet when the prototype arrived from Italy, there was something missing.
Certainly, the pink-stacked heel and large cloth blossom looked like the design Louboutin had drawn, and yet according to the designer, “the drawing was still stronger and I could not understand why.”
Enter, the red sole of fate! Looking around for inspiration, the blank, black sole of the shoe staring at him in the face, Louboutin noticed an assistant in his office painting her fingernails red. Without asking – so we can assume – Louboutin grabbed the bottle of red varnish, polished the sole of one of the shoes and thought: “This is the drawing!”
So were Louboutin’s red soles born!
When, in the years since, Christian has been asked about the importance of the red sole, he has been quoted as saying, “The shiny red color of the soles has no function other than to identify to the public that they are mine. I selected the color because it is engaging, flirtatious, memorable, and the color of passion.”
Louboutin is certainly known to be passionate about his red soles, which he registered in 1997 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office—a move that would later come in handy in a court case against Yves St. Laurent when the design house delivered a collection featuring their own version of Louboutin’s red soles.
Thanks to the existing popularity of the heel, and because of the drama which ensued when YSL was accused of copying Louboutin’s signature, today Louboutin’s red soles are as iconic to his brand as Chanel’s interlocking C’s—and only come in one shade: Pantone 18-1663 TPX.

Ferrari’s market value has surpassed that of Stellantis, the auto group that contains Fiat, which was once the parent of the iconic Italian luxury sports-car maker. Ferrari has gained 34 percent this year, making it the best-performing stock among European auto manufacturers. That has sent the market value soaring to 49.2 billion euros ($53.9 billion), overtaking Stellantis’s 47.1 billion euros ($51.48) and making it one of the three biggest companies on the Milan stock exchange. Demand for luxury sports cars has held up well among Ferrari’s wealthy customers even as it increased prices, a stark contrast to mass automakers losing pricing power as the economy heads for a slowdown. The stock in many ways is comparable to that of big luxury goods firms in Europe, producing total returns in excess of 500 percent since its spinoff in 2015. During the same period, returns for auto stocks in Europe were about 50 percent, including dividends. For a growing crowd of investors, the luxury sector is to the European stock market what Big Tech has been to the U.S.: Dominant businesses whose growth holds up even as the economy waxes and wanes. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Europe’s largest company by market value, making it into the top 10 in the world is a testimony to the trend. Exor, the Agnelli family holding company, is still the largest investor in both Stellantis and Ferrari, which was separated out from Fiat Chrysler in 2015. Ferrari had a market value of about $10 billion when it was listed in New York in October 2015. “Ferrari has always been synonymous with luxury, and its multiples also confirm this,” said Vincenzo Longo, a market strategist at IG. “The stock has been outperforming year-to-date and the trend is about comparable to the big luxury names such as LVMH.” While Ferrari is benefiting from a surge in demand for its luxury cars, Stellantis shares have been under pressure after the company posted disappointing first-quarter sales in Europe on May 3, reflecting a looming downturn in the region driven by inflation and higher interest rates. Stellantis’s 14 car brands include Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Opel and Chrysler, and its total consolidated shipments last year fell to about 5.78 million vehicles. The high-premium brand Ferrari sold 13,221 units. Ferrari's share price may already reflect some market expectations, however. Ferrari is trading at about 41 times 12-month forward earnings, by far the most expensive car stock in Europe and almost in line with Tesla in the U.S. “We thought we were covered for a while by setting estimates straight above guidance at the start of the year, but the earnings power of Ferrari keeps accelerating,” Jefferies analysts including Philippe Houchois wrote in a note on Monday, raising their estimates and price target on the stock to 250 euros.
