During Golden Week, AKA the week in May with a long string of holidays that basically gives everyone a week off, I headed to South Korea with my friends for a short trip. It was my first time going there and I was very excited to experience a new country and culture! I did a lot of things, but I want to briefly share about my trip to Seoul and Busan. Since I have a lot to cover, I'll just talk about Busan in this post and Seoul in the next post.

We flew first into Busan for a few days before going to Seoul. Busan is actually close enough to Kyushu that you can normally take a boat there, but the boat service has been down since the beginning of COVID, so we had to fly. The flight was incredibly short, maybe about one hour, since Korea is very close.

After landing at the Busan airport, we ate bulgogi, which is thin slices of barbequed beef. It was so good, but a bit spicy, which is the trend for Korean food in general.

Next we headed to the strip by Haeundae Beach where our lodging was located. They had some beautiful outdoor art installations for World Expo 2030. I'm not sure what exactly that meant, but the art was really beautiful.

Next we made a quick stop at a convenience store. They are much like Japanese convenience stores, but something they have that Japan doesn't are drink packs. You can buy a plastic cup prefilled with ice and then choose your drink pack from a selection of teas, coffees, and fruit drinks (called -ades like lemonade, cranberry ade, apple ade, etc.) Japan sells a lot of tea and some sweet drinks, but not quite as sweet and fruity as these, so I was in heaven. I tried various fruit teas and ades and they were so delicious. I particularly liked the Plum Apple Ade.

In the late afternoon, we headed to the famous Haedong Yonggung Temple by the seaside. On the way up, we passed some food stalls and I made the most important food discovery of the trip, hotteok. It's like a fried dough pancake with a filling of brown sugar and nuts. It was seriously amazing. I wanted to eat 20 more, but I contained myself.

At the entrance of the temple grounds, there was a line of statues of each of the zodiac animals as an anthropomorphic figure.

We came down some steps to find the temple buildings themselves and they were so breathtaking. I've always loved Japanese temple architecture, which evolved from Chinese temples, and you can see the similarities with Korean temples as well. But the main difference between the temples in Japan and Korea is that Korean temples are painted in very vibrant colors, which was absolutely beautiful.

Off to the side of the temple was a golden Buddha statue. You could also buy a gold leaf and write a message on it.

After the temple, we headed back into the city center to get some Korean barbeque. Korean barbeque has gained a lot of popularity worldwide, and there are many places even in the US where you can enjoy it!

At Korean barbeque, you order a course of food, and you're brought several kinds and cuts of meat, vegetables, and other various sides. A barbeque pit is lit in the middle of the table and a fan hangs down over the pit to absorb any of the barbeque smoke. I'm not well versed in Korean foods, so I can't really name or describe most of them, but they were very delicious. Many people eat barbeque by wrapping a piece of meat in lettuce and adding sauce, kimchi, or other sides.

We also enjoyed soju, Korean liquor with our meal. I love soju and drink it often in the US and Japan as well. They can come in various flavors and you can mix them or just drink them straight. I'm not a big alcohol fan, but soju is so smooth and delicious, it hardly tastes like alcohol, so I like it a lot. Please try it if you're able!

Modern Korea, like Japan, puts a lot of importance on aesthetic. Therefore you can find many cute stores and cafes anywhere you go. The next morning we went to a food chain called Egg Drop which sells egg sandwiches, hash browns, and coffee. It was soooo delicious and reminded me of breakfast back home. It was in this place also that I squirted sugar syrup meant for coffee on my hands, thinking it was hand sanitizer. Ah, the joys of being in a foreign country where you don't know what you're doing and make a fool of yourself.

Next we went to the Gamcheon Culture Village, a town known for its colorfully painted houses and shops. Unfortunately it was a bit rainy this morning, but we were still able to enjoy the vibrant colors of the buildings and go souvenir shopping.

At the top of the hill, there is a popular statue of The Little Prince from the French storybook. His presence really adds to the whimsy of the place.

On the way out of the culture village, there was various graffiti around. We found one that read "punk is dad," which was very funny, so I took a picture with it.

Next we went to the Trick Eye Museum, which was a large photo spot exhibit where you can pose with images to create various illusions. For example, you can make it look like a giant sea creature is eating you or that you're doing a handstand by laying on the floor.

Next, I split off from the group to go to Busan Tower by myself, since my friends wanted to go shopping and I wanted to see more tourist spots. The grounds of Busan Tower were very lovely, with a large memorial bell, a flower clock, and various statues.

I bought a ticket to reach the top of the tower and was surprised to find some interesting art installments at the top in addition to the city view. One room was painted all in neon paint and lit by black lights.

Next, I did some shopping then met back up with my friends at the huge Jagalchi fish market. Despite living in Japan, I was never really interested in fish markets as tourists spots, so I had never been to one. But it was so interesting to see the rows and rows of hundreds of booths peddling all kinds of sea creatures. The second floor of the fish market was a huge cafeteria, so you could buy fish down below and then bring it up to the next level to cook and eat it. I didn't buy or eat anything, but I enjoyed just walking around and taking it in.

The next day we spent the afternoon at Haeundae Beach. It was still too cold to swim, so we just bought snacks and drinks at the convenience store and had a picnic. Since you can buy prefilled ice cups and packets of drinks, we mixed soju and fruit drinks to make delicious cocktails.

Along the beach were some giant sculptures made of sand. Many of them were still in progress, but they were so cool.

We then stopped at a restaurant for lunch and had gimbap (like a sushi roll) and a kind of soup.

From there we headed back to the seaside to get on the Blue Line seaside train. They have small pod-like cars that you can reserve as well, but they were sold out, so we just took the normal train. But it was still very beautiful. We got on just as the sun was setting and enjoyed watching the sunset over the coast.

After this we stopped for dinner to eat Busan's famous dish dwaeji gukbap, pork rice soup. It was very warm, delicious, and filling.

With that, we headed back to our accommodation and the next morning we got up bright and early to take the train into Seoul. Tune in to part two to hear about my time in Seoul!

While leaving room for other sights in other places at other times, a brief visit to one of Busan’s best-known summer quantities was in the cards. We woke up and took an early-morning journey down to Busan and hopped on the subway to get to our destination. That was Haeundae Beach, an actual city beach known to be one of the most popular in Korea and also abutting the exciting and vibrant surrounding district. Our objective was not, however, to sunbathe and relax but to explore! We took a walk around and along the main drag. Since we already know boat rides to be a fun and relaxing way to see more things and often interesting and unique ones at that, after finding ourselves at the end of the beach, it was an obvious choice to snag a quick ticket for a pleasant zip around a bit of the harbors and adjacent quays and rock formations. We were certainly being treated to a lovely day of sun. Afterwards, it was time for a late-morning lunch and we scaled the hill at the eastern end of the neighborhood and hopped into a fine-looking restaurant for a solid meal of seafood and the usual Korean fixins’. No time for slowing down, however, so it was back to the station and another intercity journey just an hour or so north to Gyeongju, a new destination for Linda and me too. Gyeongju is a popular tourist location in Korea (in addition to being a midsized city itself) because of its pre-Korean importance as a capital in the ancient Silla kingdom. There are a few ruins and (mostly restored) temples and other archaeological sites of significance scattered around the area, and the most fun and effective way to see them all is by bike! Shortly after arriving, we found ourselves to a reputed bike rental business. I mean, after buses and trains and subways and boats, it was only right that we added another form of transportation to this full day of activity. We rolled ourselves around to a few spots in the late afternoon glow, including burial mounds, one of the oldest astronomical observatories still standing on Earth, and a pleasant temple complex.
