Invite: Ninth Navigating Newburgh
Hello neighbors, friends, future homeowners, and concerned citizens,
This month’s Navigating Newburgh topic will be very significant, I hope you can join us. In our previous meetings, we’ve addressed topics that interest first time home buyers, investors, and existing homeowners in Newburgh: Some of the topics we have covered are: How do taxes and assessments work? What’s up with crime in Newburgh? Who are the players at local lending banks? How to build environmentally friendly homes. These meetings have also provided an opportunity for individuals to network and help each other through what can be stressful and complicated challenges.
This month our meeting, on THURSDAY, JULY 27th at 5:45 pm in The Multi Purpose Room of Safe Harbors, will hopefully help neighbors new and old understand the upcoming ELECTIONS! The topic of Navigating Newburgh this month is “Meet the Candidates!” and we hope to see you there!
UPDATED Invited speakers Include (subject to confirmation from the candidates): Karen Meja: Ward-1 City Council Ramona Monteverde: Ward-2  City Council Nancy Colas: Ward-2 City Council Anthony Grice: Ward-3 City Council Jonathan Jacobsen: Ward-3 - City Council Cindy Holmes: Ward-4- City Council Patty Sofokles: Ward-4 City Council Gay Lee: County Legislature Kevindaryan Lujan: County Legislature Omari Sakur: County Legislature Please spread this message and invite a friend!
Please find below the agenda for Thursdays's meeting. Please note that time keeping will be strict (we want to hear from everyone!)
NOTE: Navigating Newburgh is a non-political and bipartisan meeting space, and while the topic of our next meeting is “Meet the Candidates,” we will strive to provide an open and accepting forum for ALL candidates regardless of their platform or position. Everyone that is running for office in the City Council and Orange County Legislature races have been invited, and we would love to have YOU attend and share your ideas, feelings, and aspirations for Newburgh alongside the candidates.
A little more about Navigating Newburgh: Navigating Newburgh is a monthly community meeting which aims to inform potential first-time homebuyers about real estate opportunities in Newburgh. At the same time, the topics of the meetings and the speakers we invite to lead group conversations often address community issues beyond real estate and home buying. In the past, we have had members of city government, upper level management in the Newburgh police department, and local bank representatives speak. At it’s core, Navigating Newburgh is about building community knowledge. We strive for a kind, open and accepting environment to Navigate within.
Best regards, Your neighbor and partner in navigation, Thomas Burr Dodd [email protected]

AGENDA FOR THURSDAYS MEETING:
Basic introduction to voting process and basic structure. NB politics 101. Candidates will speak:
5 minutes Self Introduction by candidate. No comments. 2 minutes to discuss focus questions. No comments.
Focus Questions: What in your opinion are the 3 most pressing issues facing NB right now? What do you think would attract more businesses to NB? Newburgh is known to have the highest overall taxes, on both residential and commercial properties, of any municipality in the Hudson Valley. This has been a major impediment to sustained home ownership and ability to attract and retain businesses (which create jobs). What would you propose to reduce the current taxes for both homestead and non homestead properties? Where do you hope to see NB in 5 years? What would a successful, thriving Newburgh look like in 10 years? Last 30 minutes Q and A from audience. 1 minute responses.
After the meeting we propose gathering at Ms. Fairfax for informal conversations.
