It's all that braves have taught us
Brave Series 30th Anniversary Song Zenbu Yuusha ga Oshiete Kureta by Masaaki Endoh
lyric translation by me; expand for text lyrics
We gotta be brave! To run all the way through to anywhere, we gotta be brave!
Did our sky become narrower? Look up, and you'll know There still are things we can do Against the unknown dangers that we will face throw away the readymade ideas Mind reset It's a chance for evolution
We gotta be brave! To run all the way through to anywhere, to protect the future that may shine, stand up and fight, with the companions of heart It's all that braves It's all that braves have taught us
Did you fulfill your dreams from the days gone by? It's yet too early to look back We're always on our journey The barrier standing in our way When you clash against it Remember, no trials we cannot overcome Angle change Break through with the newfound power
We gotta be brave! To protect the people dear to us we vow to keep on fighting Everyone suffers, and yet they become stronger It's all that braves It's all that braves have taught us
Go with me! Exkaiser Burning! Fighbird We can fly! Da Garn Get away! Might Gaine Heart to heart! J-Decker The true energy! Goldran Shine! Dagwon Ga-ga-ga-ga- Gaogaigar

Has anyone from the brave series ended up in axiom nexus or anywhere else in the multivere for that matter
Dear J-Asker,
On one occasion, Galvatron attempted to flee arrest by the Autobots through an augmented transwarp gate, escaping to a parallel world. Optimus Prime rallied the Dimensional Patrol alongside Koji and pursued, arriving in Nanamagari City. The group split up to search for Galvatron and his forces, which quickly went awry as Side Burn sped off to check out that universe’s red sports cars. It was here that he was stopped by the police robot Deckerd, who was shocked when a second living police robot, Prowl, arrived to pick up his brother. All parties baffled by the revelation of a completely different set of robot life-forms working for the Japanese civil service, the Autobots convened at the Brave Police headquarters in order to explain the situation. Though surprised by this tale of alien robots, Commissioner Juuzo Saejima committed to helping the “super cool” Autobots take down Galvatron.
The two robot units spent some time together to train while Saejima and T-AI pooled their resources to track down Galvatron. The Autobot Car Brothers marvelled at Gunmax’s Gun Bike and Shadow-Maru’s six-changing abilities, while the two Build Teams sparred after Wedge teased the similarly youthful Drill Boy over their discrepancy in rank. Of course, Koji and Yuuta, Deckerd’s young friend and boss, became fast friends. All was not well, however, as the callous Ultra Magnus made a snide remark regarding the Super AI of the Brave Police, muttering to a furious Optimus that as they lacked sparks, they were not truly alive. Upon hearing this, Deckerd had a crisis of faith, wondering if he was truly alive, leaving him without the confidence to fight or form Fire J-Decker with Duke.
Galvatron chose that moment to resurface, having used Predacon super-science to construct a drone army of the Chieftain robots who had once menaced the Brave Police. Though the combined Brave Dimensional Patrol unit fought valiantly, the army’s sheer numbers left them overwhelmed, not helped by Deckerd’s diminished fighting spirit. It was then that Optimus Prime, angry with his brother, merged with Magnus into Omega Prime, who peered into Magnus’ heart and revealed that he had been envious of the Police for their strength and teamwork. Realising that he shouldn’t let the comments of one rude ‘bot get him down, Deckerd merged with Duke to form Fire J-Decker, and the two combiners defeated both Galvatron and the Chieftain army with their combined Fire Matrix Blade attack.
With Galvatron in chains, the two teams bade farewell with a warm handshake between Optimus and Deckerd. Though neither team would see the other again, they would keep their passion for justice alive in their home universes.

2019 fic recs
it’s been a long time since i did a fic rec list so i put one together with some of my favorite fics from this year (and then forgot to post it for a month oops). i’ve been reading in a lot of fandoms so there’s a bunch of variety in this one. also because i read a ton of cap marvel fics earlier in the year, i’m going to do a separate list for those
[1 Coco, 5 Good Omens, 1 Lucifer, 5 Marvel, 1 She-Ra, 3 Steven Universe]
Coco
Work of All Saints by anistar_e (210k): Her mother sends her a letter, after. We cannot help you, Imelda, it says. You are the consequence of your actions."This is not my fault!" Imelda shouts.-Imelda Rivera (b. 1899 - d. 1969), a story that includes but is not limited to: the finest music school this side of the Santo Domingo, three traveling musicians and the mess they made of love, the twice-cursed assassination of Venustiano Carranza, all the patron saints, and ninety-six ways a man can try to cross a bridge. (A masterpiece of character, world-building, development, just everything you could possibly want from a fic and a novel, it is a grand epic that is personal in scope, truly spectacular)
Good Omens
A Stone’s Throw from Jerusalem by RC_McLachlan (Aziraphale/Crowley, 2k): "Are you honestly going to make me listen to bebop in my final moments?” [Absolutely beautiful with just the right amount of aching heartbreak and pining, and this acute awareness that they live on different scales than humans.]
damn.nation, now available on itunes by anistar_e (10k): When lowly tempt-pusher Amphora (formerly of Stairwell 7B North, before she Fell,) gets the notice that end times are nigh, she gleefully quits her job and cancels her Netflix subscription and takes her place among the legions of hell. // This, it turns out, was a bad plan. [The character work is so strong, she paints such a clear vision of Amphora and it’s very easy to fall in love with her. This is the best example of outsider POV of OTP that I’ve seen.]
Salinity (And Other Measurements of Brackish Water) by drawlight (Aziraphale/Crowley, 3k): It's an odd thing, getting on after the End of the World. Crowley takes to sea-watching. [This fic reads like poetry, it’s absolutely beautiful with a very good central metaphor. Also Crowley cooking.]
stars, hide your fires by fishycorvid (Aziraphale/Crowley, 3k): He can feel the pull of the riptide, even in water like this, only a few centimeters deep. The constant, assured call of the ocean: you came from me, and, one day, you will come back. Crowley smiles to himself at that, the water rushing insistently against his fingertips. He hadn’t come from the sea, of course. But he doesn’t think he’d mind much if he had. / “Crowley.” / He goes still at the sound, eyes falling closed. [Beautiful missing scene, I love the emotions and the imagery and the descriptions of the Pacific Northwest and how this fic is just them.]
vintage demon art, vape pens, & other treasures by kyrilu (Aziraphale/Crowley, 1k): Love, Anthony J. Crowley is aware, is a very foolish thing. He’s seen humans do stupid things based on love or lust, whether it’s tacky Disney movie themed weddings, internet catfishing, or matching couple shirts. [I love this, it’s formatted as several short vignettes about the pair and how Crowley very much doesn’t feel love - except he does, he loves an angel. It’s delightful and beautiful and poignant.]
Lucifer
And There Was Light by ariaadagio (Lucifer/Chloe, 143k): When Lucifer Morningstar is found half dead in the desert, Chloe Decker is determined to find out why. The problem is ... not even Lucifer knows the answer. As Chloe's world is flipped upside down by incontrovertible evidence of the divine, Lucifer grapples with feelings of violation and futility. God's meddling has started a chain reaction, but to what end? Deckerstar. Fits with canon through S2. [I love this beautiful masterpiece of a fic. Excellent characterization, spectacular plotting, and a very delicious slow-burn, this fic deals with Chloe finding out Lucifer’s divinity while Lucifer deals with fate and free will and having his wings again.]
Marvel (Misc)
Adjectives Assemble by SugarFey (26k): Natasha wants to find that rare edition of The Master and Margarita before her rival at the Russian language bookstore does. Kate is distracted by the cute barista next door. Carol and Jessica dance around each other. Maria just wants to keep her business afloat without being bothered by pesky police officers or high school art teachers, no matter how polite they may be. Another average day at Adjectives Assemble. [Multiple ships and POVs, lots of awesome ladies dealing with feelings and trying to save an indie bookstore, it’s just a delightful fic to read.]
in oakland by hupsoonheng (Sam/Erik, 11k): in the summer of 1998, the good reverend wilson is shot dead, and darlene wilson runs away from her grief all the way to oakland, california, taking her oldest with her. sam hates her, he hates oakland, and he definitely hates the pretty-eyed neighbor boy who's been volunteered to show him around. it's up to him to make the most of his new situation, but he might need someone to push him. [Not a pairing I ever expected to read, but it’s handled so well, the development of their friendship and then love over the course of a single summer in Oakland as teenagers, like cinematic magic, I couldn’t help but cheer for them.]
Morning Glory by capsicleonyourleft (Tony/Steve, Carol/Jess, 2k): There are a great many things Tony loves about Steve Rogers. His propensity for getting up at the asscrack of dawn, however, is definitely not on that particular list. [Domestic fluff with cute moments, good characterization, and character dynamics that nail them.]
One of the Basic Skills of Civilization (Eddie/Symbiote, 1k): Eddie attempts to civilize the Venom symbiote. [Eddie tries to teach Venom manners by way of Miss Manners. Things don’t go as planned. It’s hilarious and sweet and has a great joke about Amazon]
we were emergencies by gyzym (Clint/Natasha, 37k): It's not about being unmade; it's about remaking, one aching step at a time. [This fic is a classic in the fandom and it’s truly stunning. The way it handles trauma and trust and love is phenomenal, you learn to live with it but it never goes away, and it’s truly the best Clintasha fic.]
She-Ra
plays well with others by Cosanova (Adora/Catra, 4k): Catra may have left the Horde, but that doesn't mean she's ready to join the Rebellion. [Did someone ask for awkward villain redemption? I love this fic and the way Catra navigates the people of Brightmoon and figuring out her feelings for Adora.]
Steven Universe
I Want to Understand by CoreyWW (gen with Steven/Connie and Amethyst/Peridot, 59k): After stopping the Cluster, Peridot must face her next challenge: adjusting to life on her new planet and learning about humans that populate it. Knowing just how out of depth Peridot is, Steven enlists Connie's help in getting Peridot used to humans and acclimated to Beach City. Considering Peridot has no social skills whatsoever, this goes about as well as you'd expect. Funny episodic "Peridot in Beach City" adventures about how Peridot changes over time. Diverges from canon after The Answer (Though by coincidence, the premise of story basically makes this "Log Date 7 15 2: The Series") [What makes this fic so good is the characterization and dialogue. It’s very accurate and the chapters themselves feel like they could be from the show. I especially love the development of Connie and Peridot’s friendship, in addition to Peridot’s own growth and self-reflection.]
Favor for Your Four-Chambered Heart by anistar_e (Jasper/Lapis, 77k): "I don't get it," she says flatly. / "Don't get what?" / "You said we needed to be in peak physical form. What for?" / "Oh!" Peridot perks up. "For harvesting." [Never Let Me Go AU.] [Jaspis isn’t a pairing I considered reading for until I came across this fic and it blew me away with how good it was. This fic hurts, the themes of freedom and self-determination in a world where your only purpose is supposed to be to die for others are beautifully handled, and I love the way all the relationships are written, dynamic and complex and messy. People make mistakes but they’re allowed to grow and become better, and it’s really just so good.]
Set Me Free by cym70 (Lapis/Peridot, 23k): Being roommates gives Lapis and Peridot a lot of time to get to know each other and, despite their rocky history, they might just be able to make something entirely new. [A gorgeous, in-character fic about Lapis healing and falling in love with Peridot. The dialogue is so good, you could really hear their voices, and I love the careful development of their relationship. My favorite Lapidot fic.]
#my current fandom reading trends towards su and she-ra so expect more of those in the future#and maybe i'll find the motivation to write again#i sure hope so anyway#fic recs#monthly fic recs

Brave Express Might Gaine: Final Thoughts
Might Gaine has become something of an unlikely Super Robot Wars mainstay, having been in the last two games and also in the upcoming SRW T. It’s a series I’ve been holding off on for a while while I waited for its ongoing fansub projects to finish, but with SRW T just around the corner, I was determined to see everything in the roster before the game came out, which led to a change of plans for me. While it’s true that the situation with English subs for this series is really rough and honestly makes it something of a tough recommendation, what we have was good enough for me to make it through and enjoy yet another solid entry in a series that’s yet to let me down.
The story setup is that in the future, the sudden depletion of fossil fuels leads to a revolution in technology, most notably in the form of a global electric train network, as well as the onset of super-powerful artificial intelligence and robotics. At the forefront of this is the Senpuuji Concern, a mega-corporation led by its brilliant teenage CEO Maito Senpuuji, who also moonlights as the leader of the Brave Express, a corps of railway-based transforming robots created to fight evil. Piloting the combined fighting mecha Might Gaine, Maito fights off a wave of robot-based crime that has arisen, although the Brave Express’ true purpose is to fight off an unseen great evil that still lurks in the shadows.
In terms of the other Braves shows I’ve seen, this one is probably most similar to J-Decker, which was the show that came immediately after this, at least in terms of the plot setup. The show’s main plot is a really slow burn up until the last few episodes, with most of the rest of the show being pretty standard episodic monster (or in this case, robot) of the week fare. That’s not to say that it isn’t entertaining though. Like J-Decker, Might Gaine has a pretty wild rogue’s gallery of robot super-villains. However, unlike J-Decker, it has a primary cast of four extravagant opponents - the mad scientist Wolfgang, bent on creating the ultimate battle robot, the Asian mafia kingpin Hoi Kow Low, Shogun Mifune, a man obsessed with recreating feudal era Japan, and Catherine Vuitton, a vain and conceited professional thief who has no issues with bringing misery to people in order to fulfil her strangest whims. Each of these four come up with some bizarre and unusual plots with each new episode, with weird and wonderful robot designs to match. It results in some episodes that I’ll never forget, such as Catherine’s plan to rid Japan of natto or Shogun Mifune’s plan to abduct world leaders to force them to ratify his appointment as supreme leader of Japan. This light-hearted tone is backed up by the cast of protagonists as well - at first, Maito seemed to be a pretty boring guy, being unrealistically skilled and successful at everything at a young age with no real character flaws, as well an a ridiculously rich billionaire to boot. However, it didn’t take me long to realise that it’s all clearly meant to be tongue-in-cheek, with Maito clearly meant as something of a parody of unrealistic main characters in anime. That was further driven home by his love interest Sally - the running joke with her is that she works wildly different jobs every week, and each time just so happens to be close enough to overlook Maito’s escapades and gaze on longingly as he fights.
That said, this early light-hearted, humorous tone actually belies how serious things get later on - firstly in the form of a series of increasingly high-stakes showdowns with Maito’s edgy rival Joe the Ace. It then gradually slowly works its way into the real plot and its surprisingly intense conclusion - this probably had the most serious and unexpectedly violent final arc out of any other Braves series I’ve seen - only Gaogaigar Final felt like it had higher stakes.
I thought the presentation here was something of a mixed bag, although the fact that this isn’t really available to watch anywhere in good quality probably had a lot to do with that. Even disregarding that, this has the same problem that every other Braves series has, that being an over-reliance on stock footage, with the animation work outside of that not being particularly good. That’s offset by a great soundtrack however, plus the mechanical design is overall really good - even most of the jobber bad guy robots are memorable in one way or another, and Might Gaine itself and its eventual upgrade are probably contenders with Gaogaigar for my favourite lead Braves robot design. The supporting cast of Braves are pretty decent looks-wise as well, although it was kind of disappointing not to see each one developed as characters, with them all basically being background to the show’s human characters. I know a lot of Braves series fans loved how the Braves were really-well rounded characters in J-Decker, and even in Gaogaigar. Anybody looking for that kind of thing in here is probably going to be disappointed.
Now for the real sticky topic, those being the status of the subs in this show. The only subs that cover the whole series are a suspect set of Hong Kong subs that range from okay to awful, with the added annoyance of them changing the names of pretty much every major character for no real reason, despite the fact that the subs and the audio no longer match. However, there have been efforts to make a better fansub, which have been assembled into a youtube playlist - it currently covers the first 35 episodes, with more perhaps forthcoming in the future - however, right now the only way to watch those final 12 episodes is the Hong Kong subs. They’re not so bad that you can’t watch and understand, so long as you’re prepared to mentally filter the character names to the correct ones, but they’re still far from ideal.
Overall however, if you’ve got the commitment then it’s probably worth your while, because this was an enjoyable series once all’s said and done, and I enjoyed my time with it. Gaogaigar and J-Decker are probably easier points of entry if you’ve never seen anything in this series before, and personally I think both delivered on the Braves formula better, but even with that in mind and the weird subs there’s plenty to enjoy here. It hasn’t made it into three SRW games in a row for no reason.
As far as that goes, SRW V and X have already set a pretty clear formula for how this show might be implemented in T, although there’s still plenty of source material that they’ve yet to turn into scenarios. Most of all, I’m excited to see how Might Gaine and Gaogaigar play off one another - this is the first time two Braves series have been in the same SRW game.
With that out of the way, I’m getting really close to my aim of seeing everything in the SRW T roster - only Expelled From Paradise and Aura Battler Dunbine and its OVA remain. Expelled From Paradise is next - expect to hear my thoughts on that soon.

All the Women Who Weren’t Nominated For an Oscar This Year
The Oscar nominations are out, and there’s plenty that’s noteworthy about this year’s crop of nominees: Black Panther became the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture; astoundingly, this is Spike Lee’s first Oscar nomination for directing (for BlackKklansman); Lady Gaga became just the second person (after Mary J Blige) to be nominated in both acting and song categories in the same year; and Yalitza Aparicio, star of Roma, is the first indigenous Mexican actress nominee.
Also noteworthy: the absurd lack of women across most major categories, including directing, screenwriting and cinematography.
No woman nominated for Best Director. No woman nominated for Cinematography. No woman nominated for Editing. No woman nominated for Music. One woman nominated for Adapted Screenplay. One woman nominated for Original Screenplay.
My Academy fam, we must do better. #OscarNoms

Just as at the 2018 Golden Globes, where only male directors were up for the Best Director award—a fact scathingly called out by Natalie Portman—this year the Academy nominated five men: Yorgos Lanthimos, Spike Lee, Paweł Pawlikowski, Alfonso Cuarón and Adam McKay. Women were similarly shut out of many other key categories. Aside from Nicole Holofcener (who was nominated alongside Jeff Whitty for Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Deborah Davis (nominated for co-writing The Favourite with Tony McNamara), they were absent from both screenplay categories, as well as from cinematography. Read on for all the incredibly deserving women the Academy overlooked this year.
Debra Granik, Leave No Trace You may know Debra Granik’s name from when she directed Jennifer Lawrence to an Oscar nomination for 2010’s Winter’s Bone, securing nods for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay too. Her next feature—yes, eight years later–is Leave No Trace, a quiet and haunting film about a father and daughter living off the grid in a forest in Oregon, who are forced to reintegrate into urban life. The film holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and also made it to Barack Obama’s list of his favourite films of 2018.

Rachel Morrison, Black Panther Rachel Morrison was the first (!) female cinematographer to be nominated for an Academy Award for the 2017 film Mudbound, directed by Dee Rees. She first collaborated with director Ryan Coogler on his debut feature Fruitvale Station back in 2013, and continued that partnership with last year’s Black Panther. How she was overlooked for her work on this ambitious film is mind-boggling, because she brought a fictional world to life with richness, texture and an exacting eye for detail. Oh, and she’s also the first female cinematographer the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever had.

Josephine Decker, Madeline’s Madeline In what world does a film hailed by critics as “one of the freshest and most exciting films of the 21st century,” and “the most originally and boldly edited film… seen in a while” fail to generate Oscar buzz? In our world, that’s where. This film by Josephine Decker (with an all-female team, to boot) is about a young theatre artist whose personal and theatrical lives begin to careen dangerously towards each other. Starring Miranda July, Molly Parker and newcomer Helena Howard, whose work the New Yorker’s Richard Brody deemed “one of the great teen performances in film history,” the film is exhilarating, complex and wildly inventive.

Marielle Heller, Can You Ever Forgive Me? Marielle Heller’s debut film The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) was a refreshingly frank (and hilarious) coming-of-age story starring Bel Powley, Kristin Wiig and Alexander Skarsgard that premiered to critical acclaim at Sundance. Her latest film, based on a true story, stars Melissa McCarthy in a rare dramatic role as an acerbic, friendless, struggling writer who gets into forgery to earn a living in mid-90s New York and Richard E. Grant as her unscrupulous, game-for-anything partner in crime. The result is a deeply moving narrative motivated by morally-dubious impulses but with heart, humour and human complexity at its core.

Gillian Flynn, Widows This film—starring Viola Davis alongside a crew of formidable women including Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki—may have crash-and-burned at the box office, but its intricate plot, full of twists and turns, was superbly adapted for the screen (from a novel) by Gillian Flynn and director Steve McQueen.

Charlotte Bruus Christensen, A Quiet Place How does a movie without dialogue manage to create an atmospheric world for audiences to lose themselves in? Through visuals and sound effects, both of which are handled deftly and lovingly in John Krasinski’s cult hit. Rather than a bleak, dystopian vision, the film contains a richness and warmth, the better to convey the intimacy between the family at the centre of the narrative. Shot on 35mm film, we get both stress-inducing close-ups of the terrified family as well as wider shots of the lush countryside in which this nightmare is unfolding. (While we’re on the subject, it’s criminal that Emily Blunt didn’t score a nom for her wordless but heart-stopping performance.)

Chloe Zhao, The Rider This under-the-radar film made the Top 10 lists of dozens of film critics in 2018, including those at Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, Vulture, the Atlantic and NPR (and also Barack Obama’s). Directed by Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao, the film tells the story of an injured rodeo cowboy in South Dakota’s Sioux community. Based on real-life events—specifically the lives of the Jandreau family living on the Pine Ridge Reservation—the film is a quasi-documentary, with the actual Jandreau family members playing fictionalized versions of themselves. “[Zhap] blends narrative with documentary seamlessly, giving the audience a glimpse into a way of life rarely seen on the big screen, without exaggerating its difficulties,” writes David Sims for the Atlantic.

Lynne Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here This big-screen adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novella received a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes, earning its writer/director Lynne Ramsay a Best Screenplay award and its lead actor, Joaquin Phoenix, a Best Actor prize. Ramsay—whose last feature was the harrowing We Need To Talk About Kevin in 2011—has crafted a disqueting psychological thriller about a hitman who rescues girls from sex trafficking. “A stark, sinewy, slashed-to-the-bone hitman thriller,” concluded Guy Lodge for Variety; “brutal, brilliant,” proclaimed Peter Travers at Rolling Stone.
