Featured - Phantogram
Phantogram returns to Higher Ground tonight - and having listened to the tracks from their latest effort, Nightlife, I have to say I’m looking forward to seeing them performed live.
Phantogram came out of nowhere in early 2010 with the release of their debut album Eyelid Movies (Barsuk), which was lauded by both underground and mainstream press (NPR called the band “mysterious, danceable pop music.” Pitchfork called Eyelid Movies “a sumptuous, seductive record,” while both Spin and Alternative Press gave the record four stars.)
In the whirlwind year and a half following the album's release, Phantogram (along with touring drummer Tim Oakley) have been on the road almost constantly, building a well-deserved reputation as a tremendous live band. They’ve grown from supporting diverse tours with early supporters like The xx, and The Antlers to playing nearly every major North American festival (Coachella, Sasquatch, Lollapallooza, Outside Lands, and others) to regularly headlining sold-out shows on their own. Along the way, they’ve stopped for appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live! and drawn mounting praise from audiences, critics, and fellow musicians from ?uestlove and Kings of Leon to Big Boi.
Founders Josh Carter (vocals, guitar, samples) and Sarah Barthel (vocals, keys, samples) have gone from spending all their free time writing and recording music to finding themselves with much less free time. Having replaced their previous day jobs with new jobs touring the world and living on the road, they've had to find ways to work steadily on new music while constantly in motion. After finally making some time to finish and master a batch of new songs the band is supremely excited to release Nightlife.
"This new record is kind of an extension of the whole process of making and touring behind Eyelid Movies, and it feels in a lot of ways like the completion of what we were doing with the songs on that album," says Carter, adding that "Nightlife couldn't have been written anywhere other than in clubs and hotel rooms during this experience we've been having for the last year or two." Barthel notes "We're really excited about these new songs -- especially playing them live -- and Nightlife has definitely pushed the energy of the band into that great feeling of working on making something new."
Phantogram is currently on tour in support of their new record, Nightlife which was released November 1. Check back soon for our album review and Higher Ground show review.

An Interview with McLovins
By Becka Gregory
The McLovins will be returning to Vermont Saturday, February 19th for their third evening at Nectars. The group has become a staple in the jam scene, playing at festivals up and down the East coast, such as Mountain Jam, Strangecreek, Nateva, and Gathering of the Vibes. The Connecticut based trio are all yet to be legal, but have sold out multiple venues and will be playing the main stage this year at Nateva. The McLovins interesting sound has caught the ear of jam band fans of all ages and led them to a recent collaboration with Tom Marshall (lyricist, keyboardist and singer/songwriter who has worked with Phish) and Anthony Krizan (former guitarist for The Spin Doctors and sound engineer at Sonic Boom Studios). The three members, Jason Ott on bass, Jake Huffman on drums, and Jeff Howard on guitar have only been together since 2008, but play fluently and expressively together, blending jam, funk, and jazz together for a truly unique and exciting musical experience that every music lover in the Burlington area should check out this Saturday at Nectars, 21+, doors 9 p.m.
How did your new collaboration, Cohesive, come to be?
“Well ever since we posted the ‘You Enjoy Myself’ video we’ve been in contact with Tom, and the time was right to just go into the studio and write a song with them. We’ve started talking about doing other songs with them, releasing some more stuff with them. Whether it’s original work, or the collaboration work we’ve been going down to the studio; Anthony’s studio in New Jersey is just incredible, we love being there.”
What’s your attitude regarding coming back to Burlington; did you enjoy playing Nectars last time you were here?
“Burlington is incredible, it’s like the whole jam band scene; it’s the hub. We’ve played at Nectars twice before, and every time it’s been a stellar time. Every time we’ve come there someone famous has come to Nectars: once Grace Potter was there and Page from Phish. It’s really cool; its hip, it’s a hip spot. In this day and age when people listen to music on YouTube it’s nice to know there’s a place where live music is still appreciated, Burlington is one of the greatest places to be.”
The shows at Nectars when you guys have come around have been 21+, how does that feel playing to a crowd that are all older than you?
“We’ve gotten used to it. It’s ok because it’s a different state and we don’t know many kids from around here. When it’s a 21+ in our area sometimes it’s a bummer cause our friends can’t come. But I think it feels really cool to play in a place we wouldn’t be allowed to be.”
You played Nateva, Mountain Jam, StrangeCreek, and Gathering of the Vibes last year and will be playing main stage at Nateva this year; you’ve made a fast rise to popularity. How has that affected your ability to make new music and work creatively together?
“There always seems to be breaks in gigs, naturally, like there are certain times when venues like to book, so every once in awhile we get a couple weeks when we go down to the studio for a couple days, or play closer to home shows. It’s never too constant, there’s always a little break time in the middle.”
What role does school play in your lives right now?
For me (Jeff) being a sophomore, I’ve been a little bit more involved. We always put effort into school; it’s important, you got to do it, but there are definitely different priorities for us sometimes.
Playing over 125 shows must be a little bit like a full time job, do you guys find you have to balance work and play, or are they one in the same?
“I mean it’s like a really, really, cool job. We don’t really complain about it too much. It’s nice to have a job on Saturday night, everyone is always in a good mood and you get to sleep in the next day. We put a lot of effort into what we do, so it’s always a good time.”
What were you’re expectations for the McLovins when you began playing together, did you expect to be where you are today?
“Definitely not. I remember the very day we got together; Jake invited the two of us to play, and it was just three kids who didn’t really know each other that well and just had the intentions of jamming. We thought it was just going to be a one-day thing, but we started playing together and it just worked; it’s really cool to find that with a bunch of guys. Even when we posted the You Enjoy Myself video we had no intentions of getting so many fans, it just happened.”
You take advantage of social media and the communication methods of the younger generation, was this a purposeful decision, or did it just happen as a result of your age?
“I mean, part of it was the age, we’re I an Internet age and it seems like it was a good idea. One is that its free, free promotion, so that kind of just works for us, and it’s a really strong force so… Like when we first put up the You Enjoy Myself video, before we got the views, people started talking about us on blogs and fantasy tour. We did well there, but sometimes we’d be reading it and people would say we’re selling out, that we are paying this big guy to promote them, but really Jakes just there doing it with his mom.”
Your parents have been really supportive of you guys, how has that effected your success as a band?
“It’s incredible to have families like we have, and all of our families are so supportive. And, you can always trust you mom, your moms not going to pull one over on you.“
What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
“Definitely The Beatles. I (Jeff) know that the first music I got into was Kenny Logins and Henry Belefonte, I was a House of Pooh corner fan; those are my first music memories right there. I (Jason) listened to a lot of classical music, that kind of stuff. I mean my parents grew up in the seventies and knew about jam bands and stuff, but I was never really exposed to that music before I joined the band. I (Jake) always liked Paul Simon. He was someone I loved as a little kid because I loved the drumming.”
How did you decide on the name McLovins?
“Well, when we put up the You Enjoy Myself video, we got a lot of comments. About two pages in people started to say ‘the bass player kind of looks like McLovin, and the guitarist does too’—No, I (Jeff) was the main McLovin! You were the second McLovin. Well, I used to look like him, I still look like him. So they just started calling us that because we didn’t have a name. We’re not firm believers of judging a band by its name; if it’s good music, it’s good music.”
Any plans to tour beyond the East Coast?
“Yeah, hopefully. We’ve been talking about it, but it’s tough to make plans like that, but we definitely never close any doors. We’re looking for some westward expansion. Or maybe go to Canada, eh? Playing in Tokyo would be cool.”
Any plans for the future, or just letting things develop naturally?
“We’re just letting it happen as it happens. If you over think everything it can get really overwhelming. We’re just keeping our heads on straight, being humble, taking it day by day. (The McLovins) is an amazing experience to have.”

Jatoba: Review
By Becka Gregory
February 11, 2011 - Nectar's
On Friday night at Nectar's, bluegrass trio Jatoba rocked the crowd with an electrifying show that brought high energy and good times for all. [caption id="attachment_574" align="alignright" width="576" caption="Copyright 2011- Brett Lupfer - All Rights Reserved. http://brettlupfer.com/"][/caption] The trio lacks a percussion section, being composed of two guitars and a double bass, but has a heady, full sound that is undeniably danceable and energizing. The vocals were experimental and surprising; with the focus switching between the second and first guitarist, who performed everything from accurate and flowing harmonizing, to fresh beat boxing and full bodied, Keller Williams-eqsue distorted vocals. [caption id="attachment_577" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Copyright 2011 - Brett Lupfer - All Rights Reserved. http://brettlupfer.com"][/caption]The song “World Goes By” was light and playful, a catchy tune that got people moving and the increasingly growing crowd up ad dancing. “Girls From the Cape” was more high energy with the addition of a banjo, but also had mellow melodic movements, creating a full and complex experience for the song. The addition of the banjo allowed the second guitarist a little more variety, and solidified the bluegrass feel without being overwhelming. The fast furious banjos riffs that continued throughout the night complimented the steady, traditional walking bass line in a way that illuminated the musical skills of all three members. They broke out a mellow, friendly version of Rocky Raccoon which led the crowd into a some moments of needed rest from the constant dancing that accompanied the swinging bluegrass. [caption id="attachment_581" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Copyright 2011- Brett Lupfer - All Rights Reserved. http://brettlupfer.com/"][/caption]The band blasted through set break and broke into a Michael Jackson cover of Billy Jean, which was refreshingly jazzy and smooth. UVM student Will O’Donoughe described Jatoba as “bluegrass without boundaries” and their complex sound and knowledge of multiple instruments really does allow for them to play without limits and give their own spin to a familiar genre. The show was a refreshing beginning to the weekend, and Jatoba as usual brought bluegrass to a new level.
