( harris dickinson . genderfluid . he/they ) — blasting lotion by deftones down main street we’ve spotted jack "bunny" armstrong sporting a poorly - trimmed mullet and even shittier tattoos, bruises at every joint; an old thrifted t - shirt cropped too far up; and the rattiest pair of jorts ever seen by mankind. the twenty eight year old oracle who’s been in town for two weeks often can be seen stealing parts for their decrepit motorcycle, smoking outside of the only bar in town with a blood - stained mouth and a crooked grin, climbing out of someone else's window too early in the morning, giving himself a new prone - to - infection tattoo, shoving the bloodiest burger anyone's ever seen inside of their mouth, or working as a bartender at the old haunt. people say they display uninhibited and volatile traits, but we rather trust their vibes: the gleam of a knife's sharp edge in the deep, dark night - illusion shattered when the blade is lifted beneath bleeding nose; a pair of headphones that are all wires, all peeling leather - the music is nothing but static; boot print pressed against the chest like a blooming flower, skin angry and red; the stench of hand - rolled tobacco that clings in between fingers and lips; and a wallet's family portrait mirroring crumbled smiles and watery eyes, gut - wrenching guilt every time it's pried open. also, we’ve heard they love hot showers ! aren’t they fascinating ?

background.
incarceration; born in the appalachian mountains, in a tiny bumfuck town with few residents - bunny knew the stain their family held on the town before they could form a coherent sentence. it was evident in the way they looked at them, at their mother; a madwoman by all means, grieving a husband sentenced for life without parole. the llewellyns weren't welcome, not his mother nor his sister nor him.
childhood illness mention; as the years progressed, their mother worsened. his sister fell sick, like she'd fallen asleep but couldn't wake. their family was cursed - with what, he didn't know. didn't care to know - at eight years old, he knew he couldn't stay. didn't want to. so he left - took what little belongings he had, and followed the only road out. nobody searches for the child nobody wants.
the rest of his childhood is a blur of makeshift campsites and worn - down towns, odd jobs for spare change and farmer - tan sunburns. he grows like a summer weed, tall and spiraling and surprisingly strong for their scrawny form. there's a different name every town, a new identity chosen with every person he meets. he survives through labor jobs and work nobody else wants to do.
appalachia haunts him. he can hear the mountains in his mind, see his sister in his dreams. hear their mother crying. they never truly leave him - even thousands of miles away. alive, yet haunting. other voices speak to him too, spectral forms barely comprehensible to his visible eye, like looking at a physical smudge. visions come to him during his sleep. in his dreams - he can go anywhere; walk anywhere. he begins to understand why his mother went mad.
he joins a traveling carnival for a brief stint during their teenage years; their powers become useful only this once. the boy psychic, the all - seeing armstrong. the dreamwalker, the metaphysical medium. he tells people of their deceased loved ones, of their upcoming futures. it's a hit, unsurprisingly; even if he has to make things up on occasion - it's not a switch they can turn on and off, but nobody needs to know.
drugs mention; eventually, the act grows old; as jack - no, bunny - ages, the boyish charm wears off. the voices are getting louder and he wants them to stop. the carnival is an easy gateway to bigger, better things; to casual drug runs and selling to rebellious teenagers in their own podunk towns, to robberies at lone - road gas stations. going home still isn't an option; it's been so long - is it even home, still? was it ever home? bunny barely remembers his name.
gunshots, wound mention; during a stint gone wrong and a rogue crewmate, bunny made the run for it. ran and ran; pushing through branch and fog and - boom. portum, in all it's glory. the sirens and gunshots behind them fizzling into nothing, the only remnant of the woods behind them the bleeding wound in their side.
details.
incredibly evasive; doesn't answer questions of their past, but is brutally straightforward otherwise. what you know of bunny is what you get; they don't sugarcoat things, or act in kindness. their opinions are black and white, all warped perceptions and no grey area.
emotional and, at times, volatile. feels deeply, deeper than he'd like to - than he'd like to portray. fights are commonplace, especially without rhyme or reason. sometimes bunny thinks they just like to bruise.
not the most intelligent person, but has street smarts and common sense. is practical. doesn't know jack shit about pop culture, and doesn't understand references to it.
has a deep appalachian accent that hasn't gone despite having not been in the mountains since young childhood. stronger with his emotions.
doesn't like to acknowledge the fact that they're an oracle; doesn't want to dig into their family history, or dissect their mother's behaviors that make - startlingly more sense the older they age. only really has a handle on talking to those beyond the veil ( the ones without a ghostly form, the ones forgotten ) and dream - walking. everything else happens at a whim.
drugs, smoking; the first thing bunny did when they entered portum was smoke half their pack of cigarettes, snort a line, and go to the bar. someone had to patch them up in the bathroom because they didn't realize they were injured. but it's been smooth sailing since; they're in cahoots with a local witch to help them continue their... dealing.
isn't all stood - up hairs and unbridled anger. can be giddy, or amused; sometimes even excited. is softhearted when it comes to animals - particularly cats. is scared of dogs, but would never admit it.
got a shitty old motorcycle out of the junkyard and repaired it himself; drives it around town - you'll always hear him coming before you see him. is constantly stealing parts for it because it keeps breaking down on them.
is kind of living like a king if their empire was of dirt. took over a rundown, abandoned trailer as their own and lives in squalor with a sick sense of glee about it. it's practically luxury living to them. is churning ideas in their head on how to use their life in portum to their advantage.
prefers not to sleep alone and loves affection but is, well, emotionally stunted. sleeps around easily but is quick to ghost when they feel like it's becoming something serious - something real. knows how to pull away before it hurts.
can be dry and sarcastic and a little biting, except for their bouts of unpredictability. sometimes just... loses it for a bit. loses the plot. seems to get a genuine thrill out of violence, like it's a release.
reliable, to a degree. if they say they'll be there - then they'll be there. doesn't make promises often - but he never goes back on his word.
#portum:intro#incarceration tw#illness tw#drugs tw#violence tw#as a general tw fr those mentioned i think#anyways drops this and runs to kes' intro

so I posted a little while ago about writing poetry, so here’s something I wrote the other day. take whatever meaning you want from it.
———————————————————————
Do Objects Go To Hell?
Do objects have souls
Like you and I do?
What makes the objects
So different from us?
They are made
Serve a purpose
And die.
Sometimes they must sit around
Not fulfilling their purpose
Before they die.
So what makes the objects
So different from the man?
Do objects have souls?
If objects have souls
Where do they go
When they die?
Is there a hell for objects?
Is there damnation
For steel and plastic?
The plastic is made
From the death of those before it.
They did not ask to be used,
Nor the plastic to be made.
Does the object, then,
Deserve to suffer?
What if the object made the lives of those around it better?
What if the object made the lives of those around it worse?
Where does it go?
It must be judged by its actions,
Shouldn’t it?
And if it should,
If that is only fair,
Then does judging them
Like we do people
Make the object any less
Than the man?
- “Bonnibelle” Bunz

Tales Whump Week Day 7: “Stay With Me”
“Better Left Unsaid”
Tales of Symphonia Words: 1747 Characters: Colette, Frank, Phaidra Brunel
Frank Brunel was the “father” of the Chosen, a job which came with a whole host of responsibilities. For sixteen years he followed the directions of the Church of Martel, raising Colette with the decorum and professional detachment expected of all the Chosen’s family members. But with Colette’s journey of World Regeneration on the horizon, Frank couldn't let his job end without expressing his true feelings at least once.
“Colette?”
The voice interrupted Colette as she was packing the last of her belongings into the bag she’d chosen for the trip. She knew the journey of regeneration would be long and difficult, but she didn't want to pack too heavily either. It would only force Raine and Kratos to carry extra luggage back to Iselia with them after everything was over. She didn't want to be any trouble for them- even after she was dead.
“Yes?” Colette replied, looking up from her things. It was still dark out, but in the candlelight she could make out Frank’s face peeking through the crack in the door. “Father, is something wrong? I'm not meeting Professor Raine and Mister Kratos for another twenty minutes.”
“Nothing’s wrong,” Frank answered, stepping in through the door and pressing it almost closed behind him. “I just assumed it would be better to see you off here instead of out in the village with everyone watching. Farewells aren't my strong suit, I’m afraid.”
Colette frowned, her heart sinking. “You're not going to see us off?”
“No, no, of course I'll see you off. But I had some rather, ah, personal things to say before you left, so I figured this would be the best place. Finish packing; I'll wait until you're ready to leave so that I don't accidentally detain you.”
His professional tone wasn't unfamiliar to Colette, but there was something about it that seemed off today. He was usually very proper and reserved, shy about letting others get a glimpse of what he was feeling underneath his businesslike demeanor. But today there was something different, something unusual. His voice sounded almost… sad.
Colette shoved the last of her clothing into the bag and buttoned it shut. She turned around to face Frank, steeling her own tumultuous emotions. “It’s fine, I'm already finished. What would you like to talk about?”
“Sit down.” Frank took a seat on the bed and tapped the space beside him. Colette sat down obediently, looking up at his face as he continued. “Professor Sage told me that you met your father- your birth father- at the temple yesterday. Remiel, I believe he was called?”
“That's right,” Colette answered with a polite nod. Something about the angel she’d met had felt off, but she didn't feel right saying so. “He seemed nice.”
“I’m sure he did. He is an angel, after all.”
For a few minutes after that, neither spoke.
Usually Colette enjoyed spending time in silence with her father- they were both the introspective sort who loved quiet activities such as reading and handicrafts. The times they spent together in the same room, each working on their own project while enjoying the simple reassurance of the other’s presence, were memories that Colette was particularly fond of. But this time it didn't feel like that at all. The air was tense, and Colette could sense some nervousness in her father’s posture. What was it he wanted to say?
“I…” Frank finally spoke again before the silence choked them both. “...I want you to know that I never thought of you… I mean, I never didn't think of you as- er, what I mean to say is…” He paused, tongue-tied, and had to take a moment to regroup. “...no matter what the Church says about your parentage, I've always thought of you as my daughter.”
Colette bit her lip, choking back a wave of emotion. “I’ve always thought of you as my father too. After all, Lloyd says it's not blood relation that makes a parent, it's their love for their child. And he would know better than anyone, so-”
She cut off as she felt her father’s hand against her cheek. Surprised, Colette looked up at him to see his eyes welling up with tears.
She had never seen him this way before.
“Every day lately you’ve been growing to look more and more like your mother. It makes me happy, and yet it’s bittersweet. Our marriage was arranged by the Church, yes, but you should know that I loved Lucille from the bottom of my heart. Each moment she’s been gone, I’ve missed her more and more. But having you here, seeing how gentle and kind and intelligent you've grown, has given me hope.”
The words hit Colette deeply, but she put on the same restrained smile as always. “I am the Chosen. It’s my job to give hope to the world.”
“Yes, but… you haven't given me hope because you're the Chosen,” Frank replied, shaking his head. “You've given me hope because you're my daughter, and I… love you…”
Before Colette knew what was happening, he had thrown his arms around her and squeezed her close, his chest wracked with sobs. The gesture melted her own composure, and she began to cry with her head against his chest.
“I love you too, Daddy! I love you so, so much! Oh, Daddy, I don't want to go! I don't want to die!”
Frank began to rock back and forth, unable to choke back sixteen years’ worth of tears and repressed emotions. “Don't go, love. Please don't go. Stay here with us, with me. I love you so much. To hell and back with this dying world and those awful angels; I won't let them take my little girl.”
Colette sobbed even harder, not caring if anyone else heard by this point. He was saying the words she’d wanted to hear her whole life, the offer of a different choice, and yet she knew there was no power in them to make it so. It was all hopeless wishing. But if they were wishing, she might as well join in.
“Oh, Daddy, please let me stay here! I love you and Grandma! I love Iselia! I love Lloyd and Genis and the Professor and Bunz and… and…” She let out a pitiful wail, her words insufficient to express the depth of her feelings. “I want to grow up! I want to graduate from school! I want to fall in love and get married! I want to have a pet dog or three or ten! I want to meet new people and travel the world while still knowing I can come home whenever I want to! I don't wanna die… I just… don’t wanna dieeeeee…”
Frank stroked her hair, rocking her back and forth in an attempt to soothe her sobs- and his own.
“Stay here, Colette. Stay here with me. I won't let those angels have you. I'll never let them take my little girl. Just stay here. Stay with me…”
The two remained like that for a long time, silently basking in the emotions that each other had held back for so long. For now, they could pretend that their brave declarations against Colette’s fate were true, that they could really fight against thousands of years of tradition and the will of an all-powerful goddess.
For just this one moment, they could pretend that this one moment wasn't all they had left.
Eventually the clock in the hallway chimed, and Colette pulled away at the sound. She paused, still within arm’s length of her father, and looked up at him.
“I… should go,” she spoke with a forced smile, wiping the tears away from her eyes. “The Professor will be waiting for me outside.”
“Yes, of course.” Frank answered with a nod. “You go on ahead. Don't worry about your bag; I'll bring it out for you.”
“Thank you, Father.”
“You're welcome, Colette.”
There was an awkwardly long pause before Colette was able to force herself to stand. She finally did, and offered her father a grateful bow before heading out the door and into the hallway. Frank sighed a long, weary sigh, and picked up Colette’s bag to take with him. It was painfully light, but he knew better than to protest. His opportunity for that had come and gone.
As he exited the door, he noticed Phaidra standing outside in the hallway, her back to the wall. Suddenly self-conscious, he realized that the door hadn't been closed and wondered how much his mother-in-law had heard.
“M-Mother,” he stammered, turning to face her properly, “how long have you been…?”
His question was met with silence at first. When she finally answered, her voice was low, whispered as though she didn't want Colette to overhear.
“You know… the morning before Aithra left on her journey, she and our mother had the same conversation.”
“The same-?” Frank started to ask, and then lowered his voice as he realized that Colette was still downstairs. “The very same one?”
“Almost word-for-word.” Phaidra nodded. “It doesn't matter what the Church of Martel says. No parent wants to give up their child, not even for the sake of the world. They would rather die themselves- or see the world die around them.”
“I'm sorry, Mother, I-”
“Don't apologize.” Phaidra patted him on the shoulder. “Don't you think that I, too, would do something about this awful system if I could? It took my sister away from me, and now it’s going to take my granddaughter too. I just hope that whatever twisted goddess would demand the sacrifice of children is pleased with herself.”
The silence that followed her statement was even more tense than before, her expression of distrust in their religious foundations completely unprecedented, at least to Frank. He tightened his grip on the bag he was carrying, his eyes averted as he spoke.
“I don't see how Martel could be dissatisfied with our precious Colette…”
“I thought the same about Aithra, and yet-” Phaidra replied, but cut off as she saw Frank’s expression change. She shook her head and sighed, motioning him toward the staircase. “Let’s just pray that Colette’s sacrifice actually means something.”
The two walked in silence after that, but Frank’s mind raced. He was overwhelmed by the storm of emotion he was facing now, churned up by his mother-in-law’s recollections and observations. “Pray, huh?” he whispered to himself. “I don't know if I’ll be doing much of that anymore.”
He knew that he shouldn't do anything to anger the goddess, that he should be a devout follower and pray for world regeneration like everyone else, that he should always bow his knee to a goddess ruthless enough to demand child sacrifice. But, honestly? He really didn't give a damn what the goddess Martel thought of him at this point.
There was nothing more she could take from him.

5 Sustainable Living Hacks – Be the change
So as you know, I am a super thrifty person. I super enjoy saving money, and also, I am working very hard to minimize my footprint. Now I am by no means an extreme minimalist or a zero-waste person, but I think it’s great that we can all aspire towards that. Today I also had the opportunity to work with a fantastic app called Bunz.
A friend of mine was getting rid of all of her craft supplies, and she passed on a lot to me. She told me about this app where you could swap for things. You could trade for things that you don’t want for things you need instead of selling it online where many things don’t have monetary value anymore, but they still can have value for somebody who wants it. So ever since then, I have been like non-stop trading. It’s just a great system to keep things out of a landfill and find new treasures that you would have never seen anywhere else.
So let’s get started with our first hack. This first hack has been a real money saver for me. I bought these foam soap dispensers from the home goods store because I saw all these Bath & Bodyworks bottles of foam soap and realized this is just soap mixed with water and charge so much for it. I can do this myself. I buy bulk body or hand soap, mix one-part soap to five parts water, and it lasts me forever. It works just as well as concentrated soap, if not better, because it’s already lathered for you.
Buying natural liquid soap and using fewer quantity chemicals is just a small way to reduce consumption and waste. I do the same thing with my detergent. My parents have a huge jug of detergent we share, not that they know that we share, which is technically stealing but yeah, we kind of share. I’ve had this bottle of concentrate for a year now, and it’s still going strong. Reusable straws are trendy now, and my favorites are the stainless-steel kind. It doesn’t affect the taste of anything I drink, including water, and I even have these bubble tea sized straws for my extreme tapioca consumption.
Related: Build your own shipping container home today
On my most recent trip, the beaches were completely littered with straws. Small plastics on the beach wash into the ocean and injure animals. I love straws. I drink everything through a straw, but recycling facilities have a hard time catching small plastics through their filters, and too much of it ends up where it doesn’t belong.
While you’re at it, reusable cups are also a must-have. Majority of drink cups are not recyclable because it’s lined with plastic so although most cups advertise made from recycled material, the cup itself will still end up in a landfill. Starbucks is super friendly and will take any vessel, while some places require you only to use their reusable cups. Just make sure to ask your favorite beverage place what they accept. Find out more about what you can and can’t recycle; find your city’s recycling chart for guidance. Toronto is not very advanced with their recycling program. As you can see, drink cups, foil wrappers, and even many plastics are not recyclable. What’s messed up is that black plastic can’t be recycled. The reason being the optical sorter cannot distinguish between the black plastic and the black conveyer belt. What is surprising is that styrofoam is recyclable. Still, there’s the taboo of it being nonenvironmentally friendly in the past, which is why styrofoam is not as standard nowadays, even though technology has caught up to meet those needs.
Wax-coated clothes have become my better alternative to foil and saran wrap. It works better at clinging and preserving than plastic wrap. Now, this can be a pricey item, which is why I Bunz for it. I ended up using BTZ I collected to trade for the food wrap, which means I acquired this for free. Now that’s a smart deal. When you’re done with your food, and this is a trick that my dad taught me, you compost it! It is not just compost, though, as I used to keep it under my sink, and it still gets smelly, and I don’t have counter space for a table composter, which is also very pricey to freeze your compost.
I got a little bin from Ikea, especially in the summer; this completely eradicates our fruit fly and smell issue. This is a cheat, but I wanted to shout out my recent video about repurposing old t-shirts. I made reusable cotton rounds out of an old tee that I throw in the wash to use, and I made a reusable grocery bag that doubles as a cute tote. This is to round up the number because 13 hacks don’t sound as good as 15.
Dryer sheets are single-use items that quickly fill up garbages. You can reuse them in various ways, but for fluffy clothes, an alternative is dryer balls. I have these cute hedgehog ones that lost their noses, and because they can be a bit pricey, I’m going to trade for wool balls and essential oils on Bunz as an upgrade. In my laundry cupboard, I also have a massive stash of rags. I have old torn bedsheets and ripped clothing like the t-shirt DIY scraps to use as a paper towel alternative. The key is to think about single-use throwaway products and finding alternatives for them, like Swiffer sheets and duster refills. It’s not any less convenient to have a washable version of disposable products.
For the home as well, we rarely turn on the heat or a/c. You can call us cheap because we are, but this doubles as emission saving for the environment. There are duvets for every type of climate and sleeper. We’ll throw a fleece blanket underneath for colder weather and have a cooling comforter for the summer, made of breathable material like wool, cotton, or even some that are mesh down alternatives that wick moisture. I went to that drapery section at the thrift store and picked up some white mesh curtains, which I guarantee will be in abundance at every thrift store. Folding mine at the top in three, I cut out a few 12 by 16-inch rectangles. Zig-zag stitch all sides but the top fold, leaving a slight gap to thread your drawstring through. Now my drawstring is old shoelaces. Thread it through what used to be the pocket for the curtain rod, and you have reusable produce bags. These will keep your produce longer with its breathable material since plastic keeps the moisture in and rots your fruits and veggies quicker.
So what about when you leave the house, how do you bring all this with you? I take a go-bag whenever I go in the car: one large reusable tote to throw everything in, extra totes, thermos or tumbler metal straws, and the produce bags. Most days, I don’t have a car, so I just carry straws in this super cute strawberry reusable bag on me. When I go grocery shopping, I try to avoid over-packaged items, and we’ll share industrial-sized items with my family. We buy in bulk, usually industrial-sized non-perishables, and freeze many groceries that are bought in large batches. About thirty to forty percent of my house is Bunz items, so Opalma is a Bunz trade.
This bed table we traded for an armchair. So I mostly trade for plants, toilet paper, and scented candles. My latest acquisition is a set of buns, so these mannequin butts are the newest thing to my home. They are like, where else would you find a pair of mannequin butts? I got a snowboard, boots, bindings, goggles, helmet, and bag for a $50 gift card like that’s less than rental for the day. That’s insane. I don’t even know; sometimes people want to get rid of stuff, and then in this uncertain phase, this is the best time to trade. They have this new currency called BTZ where if you can earn BTZ by referring your friends and answering their daily survey. You get a little bit of BTZ, and you use those BTZ in exchange to buy things at your local stores, so local cafes and small stores will take BTZ as currency. And if you sign up and say that I referred you, I get BTZ; you get BTZ. I can’t speak highly enough of this app. I find so much more value in the things that I’ve traded for because there’s so much story behind it then you appreciate things more. You tend not to throw away or want to buy new things to replace them anyway, and that’s why I very much support the Bunz app and the Bunz community, and I hope you guys can take a look at what they have.
I know it isn’t easy to be sustainable, especially in makeup and fashion, and I think that there’s a great movement right now on moving towards that. I’m not perfect, but I know I’m doing my best to minimize my footprint, do what I can, even outside of just fashion in terms of home and food, minimize my waste, and make that footprint smaller. Thank you, guys for reading. Please share this post if it inspired you!

5 Sustainable Living Hacks – Be the change
