Anarchist Resistance to Nazism — The FAUD Underground in the Rhineland

The anarcho-syndicalist union the Freie Arbeiter Union (FAUD) had a strong presence in Duisberg in the Rhineland, with a membership in 1921 of around 5,000 members. Then this membership fell away and by the time Hitler rose to power there were just a few little groups. For example, the number of active militants in Duisberg-South was 25, and the Regional Labour Exchange for Rhineland counted 180 to 200 members. At its last national congress in Erfurt in March 1932, the FAUD decided that if the Nazis came to power its federal bureau in Berlin would be dissolved, that an underground bureau would be put in place in Erfurt, and that there should be an immediate general strike. This last decision was never put into practice, as the FAUD was decimated by massive arrests.

In April or May 1933, doctor Gerhard Wartenburg, before being forced to leave Germany, had the locksmith Emil Zehner put in place as his replacement as FAUD secretary. He fled to Amsterdam, where he was welcomed, with other German refugees, by Albert de Jong, the Dutch anarcho-syndicalist. At the same time the secretariat of the International Workers Association (the anarcho-syndicalist international) was transferred to Holland in 1933, though the Nazis seized its archives and correspondence. In autumn 1933, Zehner was replaced by Ferdinand Goetze of Saxony, then by Richard Thiede of Leipzig. Goetze reappeared in western Germany in autumn 1934, already on the run from the Gestapo. In the meantime, a secret group of the FAUD was set up, with the support of the Dutch section of the IWA, the NSV. A secretariat of the FAUD in exile was set up in Holland. Up to the rise to power of the Nazis, the worker Franz Bungert was a leading member of the Duisberg FAUD. Without even the pretence of a trial, he was interned in the concentration camp of Boegermoor in 1933. After a year he was freed but was put under permanent surveillance. His successor was Julius Nolden, a metalworker then unemployed and treasurer of the Labour Exchange for the Rhineland. He was also arrested by the Gestapo, who suspected that his activity in a Society for the Right to Cremation(!) hid illegal relations with other members of the FAUD.

In June 1933, a little after he was released, he met Karolus Heber, who was part of the secret FAUD organisation in Erfurt. He had been part of the General Secretariat in Berlin, but after many arrests there had to move to Erfurt. They arranged a plan for the flight of endangered comrades to Holland and the setting up of a resistance organisation in the Rhineland and the Ruhr.

Nolden and his comrades set up a secret escape route to Amsterdam and distributed propaganda against the Nazi regime. Albert de Jong visited Germany and via the FAUD member Fritz Schroeder, met Nolden. De Jong arranged for the sending of propaganda over the border via the anarchist Hillebrandt. One pamphlet was disguised with the title Eat German Fruit And You Will Be In Good Health. It became so popular among the miners that they used to greet each other with: ”Have you eaten German fruit as well?” As for the escape route, the German-Dutch anarchist Derksen, who had a very good knowledge of the border zone, was able to get many refugees to safety. Many of those joined the anarchist columns in Spain.

After 1935, with the improvement of the economic situation in Germany, it was more and more difficult to maintain a secret organisation. Many members of the FAUD found jobs again after a long period of unemployment and were reluctant to engage in active resistance. The terror of the Gestapo did the rest. On top of this, no more propaganda was sent from Amsterdam.

The outbreak of the Spanish Revolution in 1936 breathed new life into German anarchism. Nolden multiplied his contacts in Duisberg, Düsseldorf and Cologne, organising meetings and launching appeals for financial aid to the Spanish anarchists. As a result of Nolden’s tireless activities, several large groups were set up. Nolden went everywhere by bike! At the same time Simon Wehren of Aachen used the network of FAUD labour exchanges to find volunteer technicians to go to Spain.

In December 1936, the Gestapo, thanks to an informer they had infiltrated, uncovered groups in Moenchengladbach, Duelken and Viersen. At the start of 1937, 50 anarcho- syndicalists of Duisberg, Düsseldorf and Cologne were arrested, including Nolden. A little later other arrests followed, bringing to 89 the number of FAUD members in Gestapo hands. The trial lasted a year on charges of “preparation of acts of high treason”[1]. There were 6 acquittals for lack of evidence, the others being condemned to prison sentences from several months to 6 years in January-February 1938. Nolden was sent to the Luettringhausen Penitentiary from which the Allies freed him on 19th April 1945. In Whitsun 1947 he was at Darmstadt with other survivors of the Duisberg group to found the Federation of Libertarian Socialists. In prison, several anarchists were murdered. Emil Mahnert, a turner of Duisberg, was thrown from a second floor window by a police torturer. The mason Wilhelm Schmitz died in prison on 29 January 1944 in obscure circumstances. Ernst Holtznagel was sent to Disciplinary Battalion 999, of sinister reputation, and murdered there. Michael Delissen of Moenchengladbach was beaten to death by the Gestapo in December 1936. Anton Rosinke of Düsseldorf was murdered in February 1937.

The anarcho-syndicalist Ernst Binder of Düsseldorf wrote in August 1946: “A massive resistance not having been possible in 1933, the best of those at the heart of the workers movement had to disperse their forces in a guerrilla war without hope. But if, from this painful experience, the workers movement, the workers will draw from this the lesson that only united defence at the right moment is effective in the struggle against fascism, those sacrifices will not have been in vain”.

The Selkie in Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian folklore is a woman of the ocean who lives inside of a seal's skin. If a man were to find her skin after she took it off to sunbathe she would be his wife. But if she were to find her skin again she would go back to the ocean, free. This was the founder, Kimberly Gordon's, favourite folklore tale growing up. To her the story represented a woman, any woman, finding and being comfortable with her own skin and being free in it and the brand has been modelled after these ideals. Selkie was founded in the fall of 2018 as a ready-to-wear brand for women who just wanted something 'fanciful, nostalgic and extremely romantic.'

SELKIE SPRING 2023 was added onto NYFW. The main theme was 'UNICORN.' The runway itself included a wide variety of body sizes and shapes, a multitude of ethnicities and ages and it also included those with disabilities onto the runway. In my opinion, it is a statement saying that anyone can be a model and the models themselves looked like they were actually enjoying themselves with big smiles and theatrics.

I'm glad that this runway and brand is gaining lots of traction because it is a brand which genuinely cares about the inclusivity of everyone.

The lead makeup artist was Danessa Myricks, and their talented friend Linh Nguyen was leading the hair. The show was styled by Alisha Silverstein with Kimberley Gordon and Justine Babb. It was produced by Emily Bungert and cast by Julia Samersova with Kimberley Gordon. 

Handbags, including pastels and original jewellery like effervescent unicorn crowns and butterfly bustiers, were made in collaboration with Stonehart for this specific runway.

André Courrèges, nato in Francia il 9 marzo del ’23, è stato uno stilista francese. Si laurea in ingegneria civile. Partecipa alla seconda guerra mondiale come pilota di aerei. Tornato dalla guerra, comincia a progettare ponti, e come hobby gioca a rugby e fa scalate in montagna.

Courrèges a differenza di molti stilisti suoi contemporanei non studiò moda ma si laureò in ingegneria civile. Nel 1949 la passione per il design lo porta a farsi assumere come tagliatore dallo spagnolo Cristóbal Balenciaga, che ha l’atelier a Parigi. Nel 1963 apre un salone di alta moda, con la moglie Coqueline Barrière. Le prime presentazioni hanno subito riscosso il successo, ma il vero riconoscimento pubblico arriverà subito dopo l’arrivo dei piccoli stivali bianchi.

Nel 1965, la casa si trasferisce in 40 rue François 1er a Parigi, dove si trova ancora. Emmanuel Ungaro lavora con lui come assistente. Si fa apprezzare da personaggi celebri (per l’Italia, Gianni e Marella Agnelli), che apprezzano in lui la purezza delle linee e la semplicità dei tagli. “Un design tipicamente automobilistico” dirà qualche sarto. Coco Chanel affonda la lama, suggerendo

che Courrèges toglie sensualità alle donne, per infagottarle in bianchi capi in lana che starebbero meglio indosso alle bambinette di 2 o 3 anni.

In risposta Courrèges rispondeva

che la sua moda ringiovaniva le signore, senza farle ricorrere al bisturi.

Nel gennaio del 1965, la collezione Courrèges rivoluzionò la creazione con le sue linee geometriche, i suoi abiti “trapezio”, i suoi toni acidi, contribuendo al successo della nuovissima minigonna , tagliando “un palmo sopra il ginocchio”. Courrèges accorcia ulteriormente le lunghezze, gioca con materiali e forme. Questa presentazione è un manifesto per i giovani, che promuove un nuovo stile di vita.

Lo stile di Courrèges era considerato futuristico, perché disegnava abiti fatti con materiali all’epoca innovativi e inusuali, come il Pvc e la pelle in vernice. Sceglieva colori molto vivaci, come il rosso e l’arancione, e linee semplici e dritte che cambiarono la tradizionale visione della silhouette femminile, che prima esaltava le curve delle donne.

Il suo stile incontra il favore del pubblico, e per un decennio sarà uno dei capifila dell’alta moda francese. André Courrèges rende il bianco sacro, quindi moltiplica le variazioni di colore e nuovi materiali come il vinile o il plexi.

Courrèges fu innovativo anche nel modo in cui presentava le sue creazioni. All’epoca infatti gli stilisti lo facevano con defilé nei propri atelier, mentre Courrèges iniziò a servirsi di filmati girati in luoghi famosi di Parigi o in scenari ispirati a film, come “2001: Odissea nello Spazio”.

Tra i suoi clienti più famosi c’era Audrey Hepburn, per la quale Courrèges disegnò gli abiti del film Due per la strada, in cui la vestì con uno stile molto diverso da quello bon ton a cui tutti erano abituati.

Courrèges si ispirò spesso a figure extraterrestri e a paesaggi lunari, tanto che nel 1964 fece uscire la “Moon Girl Collection”, una collezione ispirata alla luna, con abiti e gonne a trapezio, giacchini squadrati e i famosi go-go boots, gli stivaletti bianchi dal tacco basso che da qualche anno sono tornati di moda, rilanciati da altri stilisti.

Il suo stile rappresentava il mito del futuro e della conquista dello spazio, per questo disegnava spesso sui vestiti lune e stelle stilizzate, oppure oblò che si aprivano sui mini abiti.

i nuovi capi e accessori che Courrèges introdusse nel guardaroba femminile, a partire dalla minigonna: si racconta che venne inventata dalla stilista inglese Mary Quant ma che divenne famosa grazie a Courrèges che la introdusse nelle sfilate di haute couture.

Courrèges è anche l’inventore dei fuseaux, una via dimezzo tra i collant e i pantaloni, portati come una seconda pelle.

Nel 1965 lanciò le famose Lunettes Eskimo, occhiali da sole con lenti molto grandi e una fessura sottile al centro a ricordare una palpebra socchiusa.

Uno dei suoi capi più distintivi è la “petite robe blanche”, ovvero il mini abito bianco, che propose in molte collezioni e che divenne comunissimo tra le donne negli anni Settanta.

Dagli anni settanta firma anche occhiali, ombrelli, gioielli, profumi, vestiario per l’infanzia e vestiti da sposa.

Negli anni ’70, il marchio aveva 180 punti vendita. Il marchio ha lanciato il suo primo profumo Empreinte. Al momento diventerà uno dei tre profumi più venduti in Francia. La sua linea di abbigliamento sportivo Hyperbole è commercializzata in successione.

Appassionato di sport, Courrèges ha creato le dieci linee di abbigliamento ufficiali per lo staff delle Olimpiadi estive del 1972. Una collezione per uomo, con abiti larghi e flessibili, fu lanciata nel 1973 con il marchio Courrèges Homme. Un profumo chiamato FH77 è nato nel 1977. Courrèges aprì una boutique a New York, sulla 57th Street 28, poi commercializzò Eau de Courrèges, che sarebbe diventata una fragranza femminile di grande successo. Nel 1979, Courrèges si diversificò in numerosi prodotti e commercializzò una nuova fragranza per donna, America, seguita da In blue nel 1983. Nel 1981 fu venduta una tavola da windsurf, oltre a una gamma di abbigliamento isolante adatto per questo sport.

Nel 1983, il gruppo giapponese Itokin, uno dei due licenziatari del marchio Courrèges in Giappone, acquisto il 50% della maison appartenente a L’Oréal (nel 1964 aveva acquisito delle quote di Courrèges). La casa, che ha cambiato proprietà più volte, tornerà ad André e Coqueline pochi anni dopo.

Nel gennaio 1986, la società Courrèges ha commercializzato una linea Courrèges Men appositamente per il mercato americano. Il designer, che vuole dedicare più tempo al suo dipartimento di Courrèges Design, reclutò nel 1993 Jean-Charles de Castelbajac per disegnare, sotto il suo impulso, due collezioni visionari.

La fragranza Sweet è apparsa nel 1993, poi Niagara, per gli uomini due anni dopo. L’anno seguente, Generation ha prodotto un profumo per donna, seguito rapidamente dal 2020.

A metà degli anni 1990, il marchio, che sembra essere inattivo, è scomparso dai media per diversi anni. Fu acquistato dal un gruppo giapponese e Coqueline assunse la direzione artistica fino al 2000, mentre sua figlia Marie aprì un caffè, il Café Blanc proprio accanto alla boutique parigina.

Nel 1997, la maison assunse Paul Deneve come direttore generale per cinque anni e riorienta le varie attività di Courrèges.

Courrèges ha avuto un grande successo per circa venti anni prima di essere più discreta dagli anni ’80. Tre decenni dopo, è rinato grazie all’impulso di due imprenditori che hanno acquistato il marchio, ma anche il patrimonio culturale di esso.

Nel 2010 venne acquistata dai soci Jacques Bungert e Frédéric Torloting, copresidenti dell’agenzia pubblicitaria Young & Rubicam, che ora sono entrambi copresidenti dell’azienda.

Nel 2011, in occasione del 50 ° anniversario di Courrèges, hanno rilanciato il marchio, con ristampe di abiti trapezio, giacche in vinile, minigonne e borse colorate; oltre che un negozio online, il digitale è una parte importante della strategia aziendale. Il marchio ha archivi di 25.000 pezzi. Hanno cercato di rilanciare il marchio collaborando con il brand di accessori Eastpak, con l’azienda di acqua Evian e con quella di cosmetici Estée Lauder, attraverso collezioni disegnate da un team creativo interno alla maison.

Un nuovo profumo, Blanc de Courrèges, viene commercializzato e due vecchi, Eau de Courrèges ed Empreinte, vengono riproposti.

Nel 2013, i designer dell’azienda hanno firmato una capsule collection per il catalogo La Redoute e la sua collezione autunno-inverno 2013-2014.

Nel maggio 2015 Bungert e Torloting hanno affidato la direzione artistica al duo di stilisti Sebastien Meyer, per lo styling,  e Arnaud Vaillant, per lo spot; a settembre hanno presentato la loro prima collezione, quella per la primavera/estate 2016, caratterizzata da body attillati e giubbini in pelle che nei colori e nelle forme rievocavano lo stile di Courrèges.

Meyer e Vaillant avevano in precedenza fondato l’azienda Coperni, che hanno poi messo da parte per dedicarsi totalmente al nuovo lavoro. Jacques Bungert ha spiegato al giornale di moda Women’s Wear Daily di averli scelti perché

sono incredibilmente talentuosi. Hanno lanciato la propria azienda, il che significa che considerano sia gli aspetti creativi che quelli commerciali nelle cose che fanno, come la vestibilità di ciò che creano. Dal loro lavoro si vede che sono molto appassionati di tessuti e questo è importante per noi, perché da Courrèges il tessuto è il re.

La notte del 7 gennaio del 2016 muore lo stilista André Courrèges, aveva 92 anni ed era malato di Parkinson, come hanno scritto, in un comunicato stampa, la casa di moda Courrèges.

Nel 2017, Courrèges ha lanciato la fragranza Eau Hyper Fraiche, e nel 2018 Mini Jupe, un cenno alle origini del marchio.

Jacques Bungert e Frédéric Torloting hanno lasciato l’azienda all’inizio del 2018. Con una prima collezione fresca e contemporanea, il duo aveva sedotto il pubblico. Però, passato il primo entusiasmo, il marchio transalpino non è mai riuscito a decollare, in particolare all’estero, dove il suo nome è meno conosciuto. A settembre dello stesso anno, Artemis, la holding della famiglia Pinault, che già possedeva il 40% della casa francese Courrèges, assunse il controllo del 100% della maison Courrèges, che era in difficoltà finanziaria.

La Maison Courrèges annuncia la nomina di Yolanda Zobel come sua nuova direttrice artistica.

La stilista di origine tedesca per parte di padre (un designer di gioielli) e francese da parte di madre, specializzata nel prêt-à-porter donna, sarà operativa per la  collezione primavera-estate 2019.

Tuttavia, arriva dopo alcune sfilate che non hanno ricevuto un’accoglienza buona, dove erano state presentate, nella Collezione primavera/estate 2020, un nuovo vinile a base di alghe; un materiale eco-responsabile che dovrebbe sostituire l’iconico materiale plastico di Courrèges.
