This is a letter from Hans-Rudolf Marseille to a historian who had written to him for information regarding Hans-Joachim Marseille. I copied down the German from the letter and plugged it into a translator; the English to the letter is below:
Dear Mr. Bumball Thank you very much for your letter of 30.1059, which I received a few days ago. Regarding your questions and wishes, I would like to share with you herewith some forte. You have read about my brother in connection with a film about a part of his life in "Der Stern". There were also reports in other magazines, which I do not need to go into. Now something about the life of my brother to complete your collection. My brother was born on 13.12.1919 in Berlin. He grew up there, attended elementary school and then high school. At the age of 18 he graduated from high school in 1937. He then enlisted in the Navy, but was not accepted because of his small and petite stature. He then enlisted in the Luftwaffe as a commissioned officer and was accepted. From 1937-1938 he was then in Osterholz-Scharnbeck b. Bremen in working service. In October 1938 he came to Quedlinburg/Harz for recruit training. After that he had to go to the airplane driver school in Munich-Furstenfeldbruck. In the summer of 1940, he was sent to Belgium to join what was then known as "Geschwader Schuhmacher". This was the most successful fighter squadron at that time. He was there for about 1/4 year and achieved a total of 8 kills at the canal, and only bombers. He himself was shot down several times in dogfights, but always managed to save himself by parachute. In 1941 he went to Greece for some time and from there to Africa. During the whole time of his mission in Africa he fought only against Englishmen and shot down only fighter planes. He himself flew the Me 109 (Messerschmidt). His most successful period was from April to September 1942. During this time he shot down 6, 8, 10, and once 16 opponents on some days, but always in several missions. After the first 8 shootings at the canal he received the Iron Cross I. and II. Class. After 30 missions he received the German Cross in Gold. After 50 the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. After 75 launches he was awarded the Oak Leaf of the Knight's Cross as 97 German soldier. After 100 launches he received as 12 soldier of the German Wehrmacht the oak leaves with swords. He received the highest German bravery award, the Brilliants to the Oak Leaf with Swords of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross after 125 aerial victories. In addition, he received the Medaglia D'Oro (Italian Gold Medal for Bravery), the highest award Italy had to give. My brother was the first living soldier to receive this award, since this medal was only awarded to those who were killed in action, and then worn by their mother or children. This order, worn by Italian mothers, gives them great honor and prestige. Hence the name of the order "Mama Medaglio d'Oro". For the awarding of these two decorations in June 1942, my brother was at that time with Hitler in Fuhrerhauptquartier and in Rome with Mussolini. After that he went back to Africa. He then shot down 33 opponents before he himself crashed. He died as captain of the Luftwaffe on 30.9.1942 at 11:38 above the front of El Alamein. With his squadron he was on the enemy flight. Without having had enemy contact, his plane suddenly caught fire. He flew back and his Karcshmarek guided him by radio, because his cabin was filled with Delqualm. He tried to save the plane with a belly landing. But over the airfield of my squadron he had to bail out due to heat and smoke. We assume that he, dazed by smoke and heat, did not jump far enough away from the airplane, in any case he came into the tail of his machine, and received there a blow, which killed him. Thus, without having opened the parachute, he fell from 1900 m into the depth. On 3.10.42 he was solemnly buried in the Heroes' Cemetery in Derna. In 1957 his mortal remains were exhumed and buried in the memorial in Tobruk. I hope to have helped you with this small insight into the life of my brother. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Finally, I would like to ask you to acknowledge my receipt as soon as possible. Perhaps I can still free this and that for you from my collection. But for this I must search again in peace. I would like to close my lines with the wish to hear something about you and your life in the USA in the future. Best regards, Yours, Hans-Rudolf Marseille.
This is a close-up the collector provided of HRM’s signature.

before the Louis madness hits tonight and I forget about this feeling, I want to make one last post and process what happened (I can hear you all gasp in relief at the fact that I’m almost done with the sappy posts, but alas, concerts are concerts and I am but a person who is their best version of themselves at them.)
yesterday was a lot. Harry was very energetic even though he had a cold and had to keep drinking his tea, he was so smiley and generally happy to be there, so loving. the atmosphere in the room was something close to unity - that showed us the power of music in combination with a man who just wants to put on a good show filled with love and great people to do it with. to witness all of that from so god damn close was more than I can say and made the evening perfect.
there was almost no pushing last night (where i was standing, at least). the queue was well organised (though strict) and once inside i didn’t feel the need to go into war mode and beat some people off of me for a single second. there was no panic attack. there was no anxiety about what could happen with so many people in a room, and no thinking about manchester. which is rare for me because it’s been bothering me ever since it happened - the only time it crossed my mind was when Muna addressed the issue, and Harry implied that he just wanted to make us forget the world for the evening. which they succeeded in.
the entire time, i just felt genuinely happy. i think i spent the entire show either smiling like a loon with my hands clutched into my flag in front of my chest, or dancing and screaming along (or crying at josette with amber) - because i had the space to, and because i had two people next to me who made me feel like i could. thank you, @kingsbesideyou and @justlookatthehearteyes for keeping me company in the cold at the ass crack of dawn, for letting me bitch about the entire world with my worst morning mood of them all, and for making me laugh so much as we hid from every fucking media outlet in this country and just all around making me happy to be there despite all the chaos and frustration, and thank you @malikslove for coming early in the morning just to see us, and filming The Chain for me because you knew I would want to see it again and just sitting there in Burger King with us and watching us pout. of course, @prettiestperrie for letting me cuddle you every time i saw you because your coat was so soft. and also @doctorrainbows for being the happiest, bubliest little bean who I wanted to hug every time I saw you, and for tagging @tiffanyssecretblog along to me when she arrived so we could hug quickly before the madness began as well (and @bumbalou for running over at that exact same moment and getting mad at me for not picking up my phone, in true us we-take-no-shit fashion since the day we started speaking).
ANYWAY. when the fuck did this turn into a thank you note? that’s not what i was going for when i started this jfkdsldssd. either way. yesterday was, as maddening and stressful as it was at times, also my escape from everything, and it was worth every single second.
now i’m going to log off and pretend i didn’t do this. it was the perfect end to tour for me, and getting me excited for march.
i do know some lovely people.
