Freddie Mercury made his debut 55 years ago. And it wasn't Queen
In 1969, the Ibex group was founded in Liverpool, where 22-year-old Farrukh Bulsara became the vocalist. By that time, he had already graduated London College of Art in Ealing and change several jobs. At one point he worked as a porter at Heathrow Airport, and at another he sold clothes at Kensington Market.
However, Farrukh Bulsar's thoughts were far beyond the market stalls. In August 1969, he met the musicians of the Ibex band, which was part progressive, part heavy blues band. They had played their first concert just a few months earlier, in May. At that time, Ibex consisted of Mike Bersin on guitar, John Taylor on bass and Mick Smith on drums. Most importantly, they were willing to consider bringing in a new vocalist and embrace some of his new ideas.
Just ten days later, Bulsara had already mastered the band's setlist, added a few moments of his own and traveled to Bolton and Lancashire to perform in front of an audience.
On September 9, 1969, the Ibex band performed at the club "With Sink" in Liverpool, where they performed an encore Brian May and Roger Taylor. It was their first concert together. At that time May and Taylor was a member of the band Smile, which also included Tim Staffell is Farrukh Bulsara's college friend.
Farrukh quickly became a fan of the Smile band, and this joint concert was his last as a member of the Ibex group. He joined the band Sour Milk Sea, which disbanded just a month later.
Sour Milk Sea
Then Farrukh Bulsara had to return to his former band, which was now called Wreckage.
The Ibex band, like Wreckage, have not recorded a single studio album, but a couple of demo recordings have been preserved - a song called "Green" and a cover version of "Rain" by The Beatles. Both of them were included in the album "The Solo Collection" by Mercury, released posthumously in 2000.
youtube
The Wreckage band did not last long either, and after its breakup in November 1969, Farrukh Bulsara joined the company of his friends in the Smile band.
Farrukh, always bubbling with ideas, suggested renaming the band Queen, and took the pseudonym Freddie Mercury for himself.
A long twenty-year history has begun...
Much later, Ibex guitarist Mike Bersin in a conversation with a historian Queen John S. Stewart said:
"We thought that as a trio it would be enough for us to play fairly simple music and not worry too much about stage skills. But Freddie was different. He's always been a star. He was much better at organizing shows and entertaining people."
According to Bersina, Freddie was the "most musical" of all the Ibex band members.
"He learned to play the piano and could write on black keys," explained Bersin. "He said, 'We're never going to achieve anything by playing all this three-chord blues nonsense, we need to write some songs.' A few things came out of it, but now they're all gone."
In particular, concert recordings of such covers as "Crossroads", "Communication Breakdown", "Jailhouse Rock", "We're Going Wrong" were lost.
Yes, it's a pity that these records were not preserved, but in the end, everything turned out as well as possible. And we all know that for sure now.
Mike Bersin added to everything:
"Freddie knew what he wanted. That's why he became an international star. It wasn't an accident. It happened because that's what he wanted to be from the moment I first met him. He had a purpose and an aspiration."

And that's great!

Pathfinder Campaign Character Reflection
Session 0
Context: A party name has finally been chosen, so you know what that means??? The return of character reflections! This time, following Ren Mithendril, an elven wizard who is haunted in more ways than one, in the desert region of Ko Bulsar.
Ren was expelled from the College of Delynwerth under circumstances she will not say. Her earnest classmate, Persephone Cromwell, followed her, eager to prove her “innocence.” Captured by the bounty hunter, Sloan, Ren and Percy were brought to Del Ferram, a militaristic and corrupt prison, where Ren shared a cell with Willow Blackwell (@fiona-clawton), a sticky-fingered and fast-talking rogue, and Percy was treated as a guest while waiting for her family to retrieve her.
And this is where we begin…
Song of the Session:
Content Warnings: N/A
~
It’s been a month here. Stuck. Trapped. Waiting. I don’t know where Percy is. Probably back home by now. She never should have followed me. Why did she follow me? To what end? So brave and naive... What a waste of her time.
I cannot be here any longer. I watch my cellmate, Willow, and her restless fingers. She watches, searches, calculates. I believe she’s looking for the same thing I am: a way out. Perhaps we can use each other.
The hunger eats at my throat. I taste it always in my mouth. I hear it pounding in my ears. I try to swallow it. It’s all I can do. But I will not let them take me back. My foot is stuck in a trap, and I will gnaw my own leg off to escape.
~
I have reflections for 8 sessions so far and they are scheduled to post. Enjoy! And as always, feel free to send me questions!

12 January 1964 - Freddie Bulsara and his family fled their home on Zanzibar Island due to political change and relocated to Feltham, near LondonHe was born Farrokh BulsaraFreddie Bulsara was born in Zanzibar's Government Hospital on 5 September 1946. His parents Bomi and Jer Bulsara were Parsees - followers of the Zoroastrian religion whose ancestors came from Persia - but they had lived in India.Bomi Bulsara came from Bulsar in Gujarat - hence the family name - and moved to Zanzibar to work in the High Court as a cashier for the British government. He married Jer in India and brought her back to Zanzibar. Farrokh, their first born, was followed six years later by a daughter, Karishma.Freddie's first cousin, Perviz Darunkhanawala, has said that the family had lived a fairly affluent life considering Bomi's civil servant wage. They lived in a comfortable flat overlooking the sea in Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar city, with its maze of narrow alleyways lined with shops, houses, bazaars and mosques. As well as domestic workers, they also had a nanny called Sabine. His first years of schooling were at the Zanzibar Missionary School, where he was taught by Anglican nuns.
But at the age of eight, his parents decided to send him to school in India. He went to St Peter's Church of England school in Panchgani, a former British Raj hill station south-east of what was then Bombay (Mumbai). Despite being a church school, St Peter's welcomed children of all faiths and Mercury was a fully practising Zoroastrian during his time there. It was during free time spent with his aunt and grandparents in Bombay that he discovered and indulged a growing love of music. He also formed his first band with friends, The Hectics.Freddie returned to Zanzibar in 1963 - the year it gained independence from Britain - and completed his last years of education at the Roman Catholic St Joseph's Convent School. In 1964, a revolution overthrew the ruling Arab elite, and as many as 17,000 people were killed. A republic was then established with the presidents of Zanzibar and Tanganyika, on the mainland, signing an act of union. They formed the United Republic of Tanzania with Zanzibar having semi-autonomous status. The Bulsara family, along with many others, fled the islands. The family moved to 22 Gladstone Avenue, a semi-detached home, in Feltham, west London in 1964 after leaving Zanzibar. Freddie was seventeen years old. They chose the area because Jer had a sister who already lived in Feltham.Mercury lived there on-and-off until about 1970. He crashed at various London flats between 1966 and 1969 while he studied for a Diploma in Graphic Art and Design at Ealing College and took various jobs to support himself, including washing dishes in the kitchens of Heathrow Airport, just a stone’s throw from Gladstone Avenue.Mercury’s mother, Jer Bulsara, recalls her son writing music during this time:“He used to write all his music before going to college, put it under the pillow and [tell] me not to remove any of the bits from underneath.”It was at Ealing College that he was introduced to the band Smile, whose members included Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. At the unveiling of Mercury’s plaque, May, who also grew up in Feltham, recalled visiting Freddie at number 22:He had a Dansette record player and I distinctly remember him putting a Jimi Hendrix record on. He said ‘Listen to this, this is what we have to do!’ And I said to him, ‘Well, can you sing?’When Smile split up in 1970, Queen was born.Freddie’s sister, Kashmira Cooke said, “He secretly would have been very proud and pleased" to receive the honour.Yet everything was not straight forward for the family."The house had no central heating... We were not familiar with coal fires and had to be shown how to light it," Kashmira Cooke said. She said her brother spent much of the time in the house "sketching for his college art work" and "listening to music, particularly Jimi Hendrix"."He spent hours in the bathroom grooming his hair. At the time I wasn't best pleased as there was only one bathroom," she said.

Tearful Elton leads farewell to Freddie
Daily Express, 28 November 1991 (x)
ELTON JOHN yesterday led the world of showbusiness in saying a sad farewell to Queen star Freddie Mercury.
The superstar was in tears as he joined the singer's family and close friends at the West London crematorium.
Freddie's former girlfriend Mary Austin, who shared his last hours before he died of AIDS, was comforted at the service by Sixties singer Dave Clark.
The singer's elderly parents, Jer and Bomi Bulsar, were inconsolable with grief and had to be helped from their car.
Four hearses were laden with hundreds of bouquets from fans and friends worldwide.
Stars' agony as they say farewell to tragic Freddie
By Jane Langston and Jack Lee
FOR a man whose life was an extravaganza, it was a most unlikely farewell.
Only the field of wreaths - enough to cover a tennis court - recalled the flamboyance and showmanship of Freddie Mercury.
Otherwise the funeral of the Queen singer yesterday was a dismal and low key affair, attended by just a handful of grieving family and close friends.
Yet there were echoes of Freddie's bizarre lifestyle in the 20-minute service. It was conducted in the Zoroastrian faith with two white-robed Parsee priests chanting prayers in the ancient language of Avasta.
Tearful Elton John, wearing a black suit and hat, joined the three members of Queen to say a sad farewell to the tragic singer who died of AIDS on Sunday night.
Bisexual Freddie's former girlfriend Mary Austin, 35, who shared his last hours, arrived at the West London crematorium with Sixties pop drummer Dave Clark who put a comforting arm around her.
The star's family went to great lengths to try to keep the funeral a secret and a team of 20 police officers was drafted in to ensure there were no gatecrashers.
Freddie's army of adoring fans, who have maintained a round-the-clock vigil outside his Kensington home, were unaware the funeral was taking place.
His frail and deeply religious parents, Jer and Bomi, who also belong to the ancient Persian sect which condemns homosexuality, were disconsolate with grief and had to be helped to and from their car.
Freddie's solid oak coffin, lined with white silk and topped with a red rose, arrived in a vintage Rolls-Royce.
It entered the austere chapel to Aretha Franklin's Precious Lord Take My Hand, followed by You've got a Friend.
The sombre ceremony finished with Freddie's favourite aria, Verdi's D'amor dell' ali Rosee by Montserrat Caballe, with whom he recorded the chart-topping theme for next year's Barcelona Olympics.
Four hearses laden with thousands of bouquets from friends and fans worldwide, accompanied the coffin. They were later distributed to AIDS hospitals throughout London.
After the service Queen stars John Deacon and Roger Taylor were driven away in tears.
Among the sea of floral tributes, was a huge, heart-shaped wreath in pink roses from Elton John with the poignant message: "Thank you for being my friend. I will love you always." Mary Austin sent a wreath of yellow and white with a single red rose in the centre. A moving message read: "For my dearest. With my deepest love. From your old faithful."
After the service, mourners returned to Freddie's £4 million home where six minders joined police standing guard outside.
Dave Clark left after two hours, looking distressed. In a barely audible whisper he said: "It was a lovely service. I think Freddie would have liked and appreciated it."

I've also heard that there were a few phrases from Avestan, which is a form of Pahlavi language I guess. A language which was used thousands of years ago and the only way Freddie could have learned a few words could be from Avesta. Because well, the language has gone extinct so?
But I'm pretty sure Freddie couldn't speak the modern persian language.
Yeah, I have also heard that Avestan is extinct. Which is why my friend couldn’t translate the entire song.
Hmm, yeah. It’s possible that he couldn’t. As I said, I don’t know. I mean, I don’t think Parsis actually speak Farsi? Maybe they do, but I am not sure.
The thing is, I don’t think Freddie had direct ties to modern Iran. There’s quite a bit of misinformation propagated because people understandably do not know the difference between Parsis, who migrated to India in 9th/10th century, and Iranis, who migrated at the end of the 19th century. There’s an article where Mary says that his grandparents migrated to India at the beginning of the century. However, that’d make them Iranis, and it would be reflected in their surname.
Their surname, however, is derived from Bulsar, which is a place in Gujarat. Moreover, Jer and Kash have always referred to their family as Parsi. It’s quite possible that Freddie may have told Mary a simplified version of his ancestry, or she may have understandably misunderstood him. After all, she’s a white woman who would not know the difference in such detail. God knows I try to explain the difference between Hindu and Hindi to my anons here but some people still have doubts about it lol.
Anyway, I sort of went off on a tangent there. What I was trying to say is yes, you may be right. It’s quite possible that he, in fact, could not speak Farsi. I guess we’ll never know.

Freddie Mercury Part 1:
Mercury was born in the British protectorate of Zanzibar, East Africa, now part of Tanzania. His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were Parsis from the Gujarat region of the then province of Bombay Presidency in British India. The family surname is derived from the town of Bulsar, also known as Valsad, in southern Gujarat. As Parsis, Mercury and his family practised the Zoroastrian religion. The Bulsara family had moved to Zanzibar so that his father could continue his job as a cashier at the British Colonial Office. He had a younger sister, Kashmira.
Mercury spent the bulk of his childhood in India and began taking piano lessons at the age of seven. In 1954, at the age of eight, Mercury was sent to study at St. Peter’s School, a British-style boarding school for boys in Panchgani near Bombay, now Mumbai, India. One of his formative musical influences at the time was Bollywood singer Lata Mangeshkar. Aged 12, he formed a school band, The Hectics, and covered rock and roll artists such as Cliff Richard and Little Richard. A friend from the time recalls that he had “an uncanny ability to listen to the radio and replay what he heard on piano”. It was also at St. Peter’s where he began to call himself “Freddie”. Mercury remained in India, living with his grandmother and aunt until he completed his education at St. Mary's School, Bombay.
At the age of 17, Mercury and his family fled from Zanzibar for safety reasons due to the 1964 Zanzibar Revolutions, in which thousands of Arabs and Indians were killed. The family moved into a small house in Feltham, Middlesex, England. Mercury enrolled at Isleworth Polytechnic, now West Thames College in West London where he studied art. He ultimately earned a Diploma in Art and Graphic Design at Ealing Art College, later using these skills to design the Queen crest. A British citizen at birth, Mercury remained so for the rest of his life.

Vissza a gyökerekhez / Back to the roots
Itt a legtöbb lakosnak csupán a gyümölcsöskertjeik szolgáltattak megélhetési forrást.
**************************************************************************
We are writing December 14th, 1908. On this Monday, in a small Indian town north of Bombay (Mumbai), was born a boy, his name Bomi from his parents. His last name is Bulsara, which came after his hometown Bulsar (Valsad). „Freddie”s father and mine were born and brought up in Bulsar, a small town north of Bombay in the Indian state of Gujarat’. That was how they got the name Bulsara.” – remembers Bomi’s niece, Perviz Darunkhanawala.
Bomi was born into a Parsee family who followed the religious teachings of the Iranian prophet Zarathustra. Zarathustra is one of the oldest and narrowest religions in the world. By the prophet Zarathustra, BC 1500, the religion has only 120,000 members worldwide. According to his followers, the life is a battle between two souls: Spenta Mainyu, the Spirit of Goodness, and Angra Mainya, the Spirit of Destruction. Which according to the Spirit a person lives, determines whether he or she will end up in heaven or hell after his or her death. Parsee means "Persian," and was named after those who fled Iran to India to escape religious persecution of Muslims in the 8th century, and who settled mainly in Bombay and the towns and villages north of it.
The talented traders Parsees were susceptible to the European influence in India, and through Bombay's railroad and shipbuilding activities, they became a wealthy community during the 19th century. Bomi and his family weren't so lucky, because they didn't live in the thriving city of Bombay, they lived to two hundred kilometers. Here most of the inhabitants provided their livelihoods only with orchards. As a result, the Gujarat Parsee community was not considered to be in good shape, so many young people were looking for work elsewhere in India, but much further away from India. Bomi and his seven brothers were no exception, so due to circumstances and financial problems, they all left India and sailed nearly five thousand kilometers across the Indian Ocean to the island of Zanzibar.
