Building as a Layman and Other Poems
By Angel André Osorio Building as a Layman Beautiful struggle. Maybe, at the end of the day It is true that, Instead of trying to carve out & neatly stack Impeccable blocks of ivory and marble, We should try to build a home With the endless but seldom useless Piles of rubble The explosions of life bestow upon us. It really might be the smart thing to Face and embrace our many troubles. Perhaps,…

I know it's Frinos's job to stand there and be a bulletsponge but watching Prometheus kick Frinos in the head - while Frinos just jiggles - really makes me feel like a bad pet owner.

What's your favorite load out when it comes to weapons/companions? Who's on the permanent roster? I remember you're fond of snipers. This is for the og trilogy or Andromeda
Thank you for this, you're really kind.
Yes! I love snipers, sometimes more than a normal amount. Idk I just like the appeal of taking out a whole enemy with a clean crisp shot to the head. The recoil afterwards and the heavy sniper gunshot sound are so satisfying.
I prefer the ones with one bullet like the M-98 Widow (sorry Black Widow sniper rifle I'm loyal to the og goat) And all the dmg% increase attachment + dmg boost cloak bc yes
I'm confident in my aim but my reflexes are the problem, they have a delay, rhyme games help me account for the delay by finetuning when the clicks register but it's hard to implement in fps games. That's why I absolutely loved the time slowing effect of the cloaking mechanism in Mass Effect, even one second of leeway made a big difference for me in actually landing the shots.
Powerful glass canon is my go-to build in most games, I want to be deadly, but also, you gotta protect me >:^/ So I take big tanky companions or support ones to help me not die since I'll be doing the big pp dmg. I may or may not refer to them as my personal cheerleaders from time to time <3
The requirements to make it into the cheerleaders team are simple, you gotta at least have one (1) of the following or more:
Supportive Biotics (Optional)
Tanky build (Optional)
Good looks (Optional)
I need to have a crush on you (Mandatory dealbreaker)
So Kaidan was a stable, his biotics came into clutch a lot. So much so I actually missed them more than I missed him during the breakup in ME2, I wanted to march into court and demand a shared custody of his biotics because I need my batman utility yellow belt! How am I supposed to carry without my pocket biotics support, huh?
Everyone else's biotics were too offence centred :( No one was like him. I'll forever mourn my mercy main boytoy.
Wrex and Ashley also were golden choices for me meta wise, having a shotgun-weilding bulletsponge dive head first into the enemy lines and giving me space to snipe them from the safety of my cover was a wet dream come true. It's why I always loved taking Grunt with me in ME2.
But those were meta teams for hard fights, while my "fun" teams were the characters I had crushed on! Hooray. It's why Thane was allowed a spot in my personal cheerleaders line despite me parking Garrus in the Normandy for life since no two snipers can be on the same team without starting a biggest dick competition and he is a sore loser! I'm clearly better + my gun is longer and bigger.
Like buzz off man! Stop copying my flow. Snipers were MY thing before you came, and now you're here and your attachment scope isn't even that impressive.
Well that was ME trilogy, Andromeda playstyle is very different and comes with a lot of questionable decisions like who thought this was a good idea? I played a good portion of it vanilla before saying it fuck it, this is starting to feel like a chore and went and installed mods to buff weapons, increase mobility and make enemies actually interesting.
One thing I love about Andromeda enemies is that when you shoot them through a scope, they can duck out of the way of the bullet. Literally jumping to the side. Same thing if your shot was misaligned and slightly missed them. They dodge and go find a cover like a realistic soldier would when aware a sniper is after them.
It's annoying at times, but heyho. Silver lining and all.
The companions meta wise are trash in Andromeda. They are super weak, their abilities are useless, and I never depended on them ever to back me up in any fight. I go into it, knowing I'll start it alone and finish it alone. The most useful thing they've ever done is being a shield meat while I reload.
So I pick them like keychains, whichever suits my mood the best. Whose voice do I wanna hear screaming in the background on the battlefield?
Drack, the krogan, however, is actually half-decent on the battlefield. I guess it comes from virtue of being a krogan and all. A team with two krogans is literally the dream team. Their sheer usefulness on the battlefield paints you a better picture of why the genophage ordeal happened, because a single krogan is really worth an army. It's genuinely the best piece of environmental storytelling in ME.
There are a lot of new and unique snipers in Andromeda... but I didn't like any of them. Yes, listen, I know hating laser weapons and playing futuristic sci-fi games is an oxymoron, but I can't help it! lasers suck. Where is the pizzazz? Where is the recoil? The piercing sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier? All I get is a "pssshhht" continuous sound akin to the ambient piss stream of a guy in a public restroom. I don't wanna grill chicken. I wanna go big pew.

Hey, out of curiosity, what was your loadout for boreal? Have been going at him with kitguns and nataruk to nearly no damage on the bulletsponge
I went with saryn, nataruk, and sporelacer, but I also did it on a public match so there were 3 other people doing damage as well. The weapon of mine that did the most damage was nataruk but it was still a pain to get their health down, even with 4 people and a good single target weapon.

hey anon so I'm going to try and format this with my commentary to the best of my ability. also, thanks for sharing!
Hi! Just read your thread about Heisenberg's powers and Miranda's intentions, and I feel like what Miranda was specifically looking for in a vessel can be summarized in this one line of hers from a villager's note: "This [Rose] is the chosen child. She will return to her original form no matter what befalls her."
It's also implied several times throughout the game that Ethan Winters is being put through some sort of 'test' for Miranda to study exactly how resilient he is, and thus have a better idea of Rose's powers. Cutting Rose's limbs and putting her in four different flasks in itself was also a way for Miranda to evaluate the baby's powers and see how they operate. With that in mind, I honestly believe that the one thing Miranda was looking for was not really an all-powerful weapon, but simply a vessel with high regenerative powers. We're talking about a mother who was traumatized by the loss of her child, who died from the great influenza pandemic. She doesn't want to risk her daughter to die on her again while she's completely powerless about it, so it makes sense that she would favor subjects with strong defensive powers over those with strong offensive abilities.
I definitely see your point here, but I wonder how she could know Rose had such regenerative powers, considering her network of knowledge comes through the megamycete and absorbs those who died there. she mentions discovering of her existence through the Connections, which could mean they were studying Rose since before birth? idk, it just seems like a massive shot in the dark.
buuut Heisenberg also mentions Miranda being scared of Rose because of how powerful she is, which to me sounds like she was fully aware Rose wasn't just good at defense, she was also powerful offensively, so we circle back to her wanting to create New God Baby.
about Ethan, I think him being tested was bull she fed the lords so they'd keep him alive. she mentions at the boss battle that he has "awakened" the megamycete - I think Rose's connection to the mold likely made her somewhat aware of what her father was going through and stirred something within her, something that awoke her powers and then weakened Miranda in retaliation.
Hence why Dimitrescu was the one that was labeled 'Most compatible' with the Cadou in her medical report, and was considered, in Miranda's letter to Eva, as the nearest to perfection any of her experiments ever came, despite not having offensive abilities as powerful as Heisenberg's. Her main feature was to be a total bulletsponge, and she was only made vulnerable by a specific mixture of several poisons that interfered with her regenerative properties and made her possible to kill.
Two of the other three Lords were more resilient than regular human beings in their mutated form, but not as invulnerable as non-poisoned Dimitrescu was even in her normal form, while all three of them could be defeated with regular weaponry and, in their normal forms, were just as vulnerable as regular humans are.
to be fair, Alcina did grow metal claws at will. combine that with being near invulnerable to attacks, and again we circle back to a nice combo of defense + offence.
I think we enter iffy territory with discussing the lords' resilience, because aside from Donna, we don't really know anything. even with her we don't know, because Ethan did stab her weak spot. we don't really know if she'd die if stabbed, say, in the neck or something. we never shoot unmutated Moreau and bullets don't reach unmutated Heisenberg, so it's mostly conjecture at this point. mutated Moreau is invulnerable when cocooned, and for mutated Heisenberg you don't even shoot him, you shoot the malfunctioning metal bits he's absorbed.
Little Rose was the only one whose regenerative powers outclassed Dimitrescu's, and, unlike her, there doesn't seem to be any downside to her abilities. Although Jack Baker would have been an equally good option but I don't think Miranda ever learned about him (nor would she have bothered traveling all the way to Louisiana to abduct him, anyway)..
So, in the end I don't think age or gender played a part in whether or not the Lords made good vessels for Eva, the specific powers that came from the Megamycete are truly what Miranda was after. Heisenberg seemed like a good option to us because we tend to think that great offensive powers are always the superior choice, but Miranda appeared to mostly value resilience over combat skills in her search for a vessel. I guess that's why Rose, followed by Dimitrescu, were considered to be better vessels than Heisenberg.
Rose is a literal baby, so we really can't know what her weaknesses are. which means it's a colossally bad idea overall, especially when we factor in that she was aware and actually fought back. but that is besides the point.
I think you're kind of missing the point of the posts, though. it's not that I think Heisenberg's offensive powers made him a good specimen or vessel, but more on that a little later.
About Heisenberg having the potential of being truly OP when we think about it, however, I believe we kinda saw almost all of the bosses in their full glory (minus Dimitrescu who had to be specifically poisoned to be killable, and Mother Miranda whose powers and control over the Megamycete were being overruled by baby Rose) and that their powers are simply limited. Heisenberg can't deflect bullets nor control iron in other people's blood, for example (in fact, he seems to only be able to control the metal that he can see, within a certain range) so I doubt he would be able to do all the things that you talked about as well. Moreau's acid couldn't melt metal and other non-organic materials either. Beneviento's psychic abilities are useless if you wear a gas mask to avoir inhaling her flowers and Dimitrescu won't be able to regenerate if her organism is already busy fighting poison. Indeed, writers could make Moreau's acid able to melt anything, the spores of Beneviento's flowers able to penetrate any material, and Dimitrescu invulnerable to everything including the strongest poisons, but what would be the point in that? I think not giving them those limitations would be a disservice to their characters and impair their complexity more than it would flesh them up as you suggest. And, as you pointed out, it would make the whole narrative of Heisenberg dedicating his life to build an army to defeat Miranda and get a taste of freedom pointless, instead of just accepting the fact that his powers have limits. This whole last point is just my opinion, though.
my point, anon, is that Capcom gave these characters these powers and then promptly limited them because from a narrative standpoint, they'd ruin the plot. you can't not give Dimitrescu a weakness, because then the game doesn't progress. however, we're not really talking in game here. in game, yes, Heisenberg is limited. what we were discussing is that they gave him this immensely vast power and then limited it either because they didn't think too much of it or just because he can't be an OP villain - and we're exploring what he could do if narrative confines weren't an issue.
I'm not saying Capcom portrayed them wrong, or did them dirty, or anything. what I am saying is that maybe the reason they couldn't do these things you mentioned is because they don't know they can, or haven't developed such abilities, and those are fun ideas to explore, in particular when you are talking about things away from canon. we're not likely to get in depth explanations or development in any of that, so we make do. in particular because there are people out there RPing, writing, or just daydreaming theories about their favorite characters.
the way I see it, it's kinda stupid to give a character fire and then stipulate that it can't burn. for Heisenberg in particular magnetism is this really weird part of science that does things that are hard to understand and what we see in game is "metal man only pulls metal, but can't even bend it". we see "creepy doll gives man bad trip" when we could be seeing "creepy doll spread trippy pollen all over village and now everyone's dancing naked". you know? we're not arguing Heisenberg was the right vessel, we're playing with canon but away from it. I'm not sending a letter to Capcom to say they were wrong, I'm writing pre-canon shit that explores "what could have happened before moldy man and choppy baby"

short of rewinding time to let the og telltale crew write me a new game with sasha and fiona, i guess this is actually the best i would want for them, at this point. as a novel it can maybe actually focus on them as characters, instead of having them appear in a mainline game as brief cameos who deliver a sidequest that involves a lot of tedious bulletsponges and a reward gun named The Shart or something
i don't know that video game novels are ever like ... good ... but at this point i feel immune to any psychic damage it would cause by being bad, so. bring it on
of all possible things for gearbox to do or not do with fiona and sasha, "spinoff novel by anthony burch" was never on my bingo card

Well.
That’s that. I’ll make a final quick post but what even is there to say?
Skyrim ends on the limpest noodle of an ending it can. A bethesda tradition- though miles lesser than even Oblivions cutscene ending.
What an ‘okay’ game. A game I truly still don’t understand the intense popularity of. Like, this is a game that often comes up in discussions of Bethesda making their titles more streamlined or ‘mainstream’ or ‘easy’ and honestly, yeah, it’s plenty of that. And I don’t really see anything wrong with that- not my preferred flavor- but also not something I’d remotely push away because it increases accessibility and CAN BE A GOOD THING IN GENERAL.
But this... I just don’t really like this. It’s funny that the point I had stopped at years and years ago was right after capturing the dragon in Whiterun- because that’s like 10 minutes from beating the game and I just stopped because my interest was zero and some new exploits for grinding levels quickly were found that removed the last pittance of enjoyment I was having.
I was harsh on the game back then, and I can’t help but say at least half of that spite was justified. Today though? It’s okay.
It’s purely, entirely, 100%, okay.
It won’t let me role play because the customization limits me in every way that would allow me to better enjoy my character (no custom spells, no athletics or acrobatics, no real reason to do anything but use a bow, and some innovations that should have come to this title way back in 2011 such as buffing weapons with spells aren’t here either which is weird).
It won’t let me role play because every character you could ever have an opinion about is essential so you can’t decide “My character would NEVER take this, they’d take matters into their own hands and kill one to save a hundred”.
It won’t let me enjoy the world because it’s aesthetics are BORING AS HECK and the politics are just laughably annoying. Seriously “Race superiority as a character trait for an entire race of people” isn’t interesting or fun, it’s racism, a boring and easily written trait which I’m gonna hate and you making so many of these racists essential is you telling me that you’re crappy writing is more important than me role playing in your role playing game. I’m not saying “Don’t include that” so much as “Let me DO something about it other than sit there smiling while I listen to your crap writing”.
Dragons are the innovation of this title compared to Oblivion (well, that and removing all fantasy aesthetics for brown and white colors) and they suck. They suck entirely. They aren’t fun to fight. They are the final boss and you saw how it goes- just stand in place waiting on their bulletsponge health bar to go down. Dragons. Suck. In. Skyrim. They are ‘okay’ aesthetically, though I prefer more fantastical interpretations, but they just suck in every other way. Being the only part of the story that matters? Sucks. Gameplay? Sucks. Loot being pretty much just ‘scales and bones to make the strongest armor for yourself and that’s it which in itself makes it so a smith character can be fully equipped a couple hours after starting the game’? Sucks. It’s not fun or interesting.
Music? Sucks. Say whatever you like. I hated the viking chant from the first trailer and every time I turn on the game I despise it, and the other music is just boring.
I’m ranting. The game’s okay. There’s a lot of fun here for the first few hours. Exploring caves is fun for a little bit- but then it quickly becomes a chore. Looting is fun for a little bit, then it becomes pointless. Leveling stuff is fun for a little bit then you realize there aren’t any interesting spells and no custom spells so all you’re doing is leveling attack stats and picking perks that literally just raise your damage, how interesting.
There’s good. Some quests are really well done- heck- Dragonborn was a riling good time throughout with interesting enemies, aesthetics, and questlines! THAT WAS FUN! Fighting a Giant at level 4? FUN! The first time you absorb a dragon soul and everyone cheers? FUN! Heck- that first encounter with a giant spider? FUN!!!!
But then you’re exploring the umpteenth dwarf ruin, or feeling your brain melt as you face yet more falkner, or ask yourself if you want to just use the dragon comman shout on this random encounter dragon so you can walk away and not fight it for pointless loot, or you start asking yourself why spells like candelight or items like torches even have time limits when so many of the locations you enter are dark and drab to the point of inducing a headache, or you get dragged into another quest telling you to care about the Empire vs Ulfric quest which I CAN’T CARE ABOUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME, or any number of things.
But then you see a troll, light them on fire, and it feels good a moment again.
It’s a mixed bag. I don’t hate it nearly as much as I did before, but yeah, still not remotely my jam.
There’s plenty I didn’t do. Version I played can’t support mods so there was none of that- which I’d argue isn’t the point, but also I’d argue ‘good mods make a game better and only exist because of the community so in a way good mods SHOULD be considered a part of the game’ so I don’t know. Irrelevant for me anyway since I couldn’t use em. Didn’t make a house though I know that’s a feature somewhere, I’ll look up a video and feel like I did it myself, it’s fine. I didn’t bother maxing out blacksmithing like I did years back, which means I didn’t bother making dragon armor, but it didn’t seem to matter and I’ve done that before anyway. Didn’t do a lot of things- but most of those things would entail repeating the exact boring complaints I’ve had just to do em- like grinding resources for a house, or clearing more caves for some of the guilds.
Heck, guilds, didn’t do most of them because they don’t interest me as much in this game. Didn’t do thieves because I was burnt out on Riften by the time it became a real option despite that being one of my favorites in Oblivion. Same with Dark Brotherhood. Maybe I’ll revisit to do them but I gotta be real- I’m burnt out on Skyrim’s bland everything, I probably won’t.
But yeah. This was a very negative take away so let me recolor that as best I can.
Skyrim was okay. I had a lot of fun that I didn’t expect to have. I really like my character Senn’Rawg despite the fact this game didn’t let me role play and craft her at all- I would like to revisit her in another game that better lets me, you know, be a person instead of a boring “yes man / no please die” protag. I had a lot of fun. And I had a lot of not so fun times. And now I’m done. I’ll toss a quick post just because but yeah, this wasn’t as painful a revisit as I thought it’d be. I’ve been saying things like that a lot lately- I think it’s because my view on games has grown with me to the point where now I really honestly do look for what the game has to offer despite any flaws, as opposed to seeing flaws and giving up seeing anything good. Too bad my writing didn’t give off that impression in this wrap up, lol.
