The Sulamani Temple (Burmese: စူဠာမဏိဘုရား) is a Buddhist temple located in the village of Minnanthu (southwest of Bagan) in Burma. 💛💚🧡 The temple is one of the most-frequently visited in Bagan. It was built in 1183 by King Narapatisithu, and is similar to the Thatbyinnyu Temple in design. The Sulamani Temple also shows influence from the Dhammayangyi Temple, and was the model for the Htilominlo Temple. Sulamani Temple was restored after the 1975 earthquake, and utilises brick and stone, with frescoes in the interior of the temple. It was rebuilt in 1994. Htilominlo temple is located between Nyaung U and Bagan, and about 1.5 km northeast of Bagan. This large temple was built by King Natapaya in 1218. The temple is known to be the last temple built in Myanmar style in Bagan. According to legend, Htilominlo was chosen to be the next King out of the five sons of King Narapati Sithu. The five sons stood in a circle with a white umbrella in the center. When the umbrella would tilt and point towards one of the sons, that son was to be the next King. As the umbrella pointed towards Htilominlo, who was the youngest son. Upon chosen by the Hti (white umbrella), all four brothers and the king unanimously agreed to make him the crown prince, thus being named Htilominlo, meaning “favored by the king and the white umbrella as well”. It is said that the Htilominlo pagoda was built on the spot where he was selected as the next King. #Htilominlo #Bagan #Myanmar #No31 #12in12Traveler (at Htilominlo Temple)

One Day in Bagan
We hired a driver and tour guide through a company called Enjoy Bagan Day Tours. They came and picked us up at 9:30. They were both super nice, and David, our guide, spoke English really well. He first took us to a very bustling market that the locals use to get all of their groceries and other goods. It was great to have David explain some of the things we had been wondering about, like the traditional makeup the women use here and the tobacco-like leaves that all the men chew. Daneille and I both got some souvenirs and gifts for friends and family. After the market, we headed to our first pagoda, Shwezigon Pagoda. The gold leaf on the stupa was being restored so some of it was covered in cloth, but it was beautiful nonetheless. The pagoda was completed in 1102 AD. The stupa is surrounded by lots of smaller temples. We also stopped at a very ancient temple with individual meditation "caves" that the monks used to use to mediate. The walls had exquisite ancient murals, so pictures aren't allowed because they could damage the paint. After that, we headed to Htilominlo Temple. The buddhas at this temple all have an umbrella on each side of them. According to legend, King Htilominlo was chosen when his father arranged his five sons in a circle with an umbrella in the middle and said that whoever the umbrella titled toward would be the next king, and the umbrella tilted toward Htilominlo. He built this temple on the spot where he was selected as king. The temple was built in 1218. The temple had some very pretty murals. We were able to walk out to a former monetary building and climb to the top which gave an amazing view of the temple and of the surrounding area. Then we headed to a compound of smaller stupas. It's incredible how many stupas there are in Bagan. Our next stop was the Gubyaukgyi Temple. Built in 1113, this temple has 547 murals depicting Jātakas (the stories of Buddha's previous lives). The temple has a strong influence from Bengal because one of the King's wives was from that region. After that we went to Ananda Temple. It was built in 1105 and features four exquisite standing buddhas. It also has a strong Indian influence. Next we went to Dhammayangyi Temple. This is the largest temple is Bagan. It was built by King Narathu to repent for his sins after he killed his father and oldest brother to claim the throne. After that we went to Thatbyinnyu Temple, built in 1144. We climbed to the top of one of the ancient stupas there. We went to Buledi Pagoda to watch the sunset but unfortunately it was raining quite a bit so we just took some pictures and climbed back down the steep stairs. When we got back to our hotel we were so hot and sticky that we went straight to the beautiful hotel pool and swam a bit in the rain. We had a really excellent dinner at Sanon, a sort of Myanmar-European fusion nonprofit restaurant that provides training for at-risk youths. The soft shell crab appetizer was fantastic and I had a duck salad which was one of my favorite things I've had this trip.

The Mahabodhi Temple was built in the mid-13th century during the reign of King Htilominlo, and is modelled after the Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bihar, India. It is built in an architectural style typical during the Gupta period, and contains a large pyramidal tower with many niches containing over 450 images of Buddha. The temple survived the 1975 Bagan earthquake, and was repaired in following years. #bagan #mandalay #myanmar #southeastasia #asia #travel #wanderlust #traveladdict #backpacking #architecture #pagoda #buddhism #wishlist #bucketlist #lpfanphoto #travelingtheworld #atlas #world #bestplacestogo #beautifuldestinations #dreamplaces #speechlessplaces #girlswhowander #glt #gltLove #girlslovetravel #traveladdict #travelmyanmar #lelsinmyanmar (at Mahabodhi Temple, Bagan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnSG73YFML5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ampvslmigo16

Gawdawpalin Temple is the second tallest temple in Bagan. The temple is similar in layout to Thatbyinnyu Temple and started right after Sulmani’s completion. According to a legend the King Narapati-sithu (1174-1211) had committed a sin against his ancestors. As a punishment his eyes turned blind. Following the advice of Brahmin astrologers he made idols of his ancestors and placed them on thrones. The King worshipped them asking forgiveness for his sin. He regained his sight. Gawdawpalin Pagoda was then built on the place where the ceremony had taken place. But the king did not complete the construction. It was completed by his son Htilominlo (1211-1234). The name Gawdawpalin means “the throne which was worshipped”. #Gawdawpalin #Bagan #Myanmar  #No31 #12in12Traveler (at Gawdawpalin Temple)
