just dropping in to say I am looking forward to seattle au very very much! as someone who is technically a seattle native but has never lived there as an adult or in the city proper, the romance and plot is nice and all but I would be here just for your palpable love for the city! I hope your scene driving over the 520 bridge in the dark and the rain made it in <3
ahhhh anon ty ❤️❤️❤️ while this fic is about many things it really IS about me being like fuck i love my hometown and im so glad someone else is excited about that too. and you best believe that scene is in there! in fact it's so unspoiler-y that i think i can share:
They don’t talk for the first few minutes of the drive, the driver navigating quiet, curving suburban streets as they slowly make their way towards the bridge to some music station that only seems to play quiet world music Leon’s never heard in his life. Leon’s surprised to find himself breaking the quiet as they finally get on the highway. “Weird how everyone else lives over here except us.”
“God, I know,” Matthew says, laughing. “I mean, I get it, good schools and all, but it seems so inconvenient.”
“Yeah,” Leon says. “ I just told the realtor I wanted to be close to the arena, and the building seemed okay, so, yeah.”
“So, yeah,” Matthew repeats, tone teasing. “Well, that sounds a lot better than my search.”
“Oh really?”
“Mmm.” Matthew tilts his head back, chin tipping up, the yellow light from the lamps along the highway changing his skin to a strange pale gold. “Dad got all invested, looking up neighborhoods and resale values. Kept telling me I should go for a house on the lake or something.” He sits up, adopting a new tone, exaggeratedly loud and brash. “It’s a good investment, Matthew. By next summer, the market’s gonna be crazy. You can make a nice little profit when your contract is up if you decide to sign somewhere else. This is about planning for your future.” Then Matthew shifts, slumping back into his seat and laughing softly. “Always so opinionated.”
“Sounds annoying.”
Matthew shrugs, resting an elbow on the car door and propping up his chin, looking out at the dark, choppy water of the lake on his side of the bridge. “Yeah, well. That’s parents for you.”
“Yeah,” Leon replies. Almost unconsciously, he mirrors Matthew’s pose, staring out his own side of the car. When he looks at the lake water, it’s mirror smooth. The whole view is dark, still, disturbed only by the blue lights of the toll cameras flashing as they pass underneath. “Well, I think you picked a good spot.”
Even without looking to check, Leon can hear Matthew turning in his seat, can feel the sudden heat of his attention. “You think so?”
It’s Leon’s turn to shrug. He watches as the far shore comes into view, the yellow lights of the houses, the occasional red and green flash of a plane up overhead, the dark silhouette of the football stadium. “I mean, I picked the same place, didn’t I?”
Matthew’s laugh is quiet, hardly audible over the murmur of the radio. “Fair enough.”

Do Androids Dream of Electric Jam? - Ch. 3: Another Way Out
Prev - Another Way Out - Next - Masterpost - [ AO3 ]
2122-11-03 : 08:30 UTC-8
“Thanks, Papa Bear.” Remus met Virgil’s eyes across the tiny prefab table. It had probably once been a nightstand from one of those old buy-your-way-out-of-existential-dread shopping websites from the last century. The solid plastene structure had proven to be indestructible, barely dented by Remus’ over aggressive moves during ERS. He tapped the comm between them on the table, disconnecting the call. “He’s on the move. If he runs your facial ID—”
“If he runs my facial ID, Duke’s ‘ll be his first stop.”
Remus tugged at his mustache. He was quiet for a while, then finally a manic grin split his face. “We’ll just hafta be ready for him then.”
~~~
Logan rode the elevator all the way down to the road level and ordered his motorcycle out of the garage. Back when this building had been filled with people—human people—the garage had been so overcrowded that only AI valets could manage the chaos. The University had never deactivated the system, so even now that he and Janus lived in one of the last occupied units, Logan was dependent on the parking mechanism to retrieve his ride.
While he waited, he scanned the documents Dispatch had sent him. After a few screenfulls, he sucked his teeth in annoyance, muttering to himself. “No wonder you need me to find it. You haven’t even run its image through the old web yet.” Logan tapped at his watch, sending the artifice’s photo through all the old image recognition databases. If it truly was an original Model V as its features seemed to indicate, and, of course, if the mods were old enough, he might just get lucky and get a hit.
His bike arrived and Logan left the algorithm to its task. If this bot had anything to do with the mayhem surrounding last night’s attack, it was unlikely still anywhere north of Montlake or the wreckage of the old 520 ‘floating’ bridge, so Logan headed south and waited for any information the image search might uncover.
He’d just passed the old arboretum when he got a hit. Back when the rising waters began to breach the northern retaining wall Downtown, businesses and residents alike fled, abandoning their buildings. Squatters soon took over, and the old Redhook Brewery was snatched up by some enterprising young punk with more bravery than sense. He’d apparently called in his gang of fellow University dropouts—and their parents’ artifices—to help. The Seattle PD had captured aerial footage of them as they’d refurbished the building and opened a club in the lower floors that were still above sea level.
Logan shook his head. The SPD had let the statute of limitations run out before they’d bothered to do anything about them and under the new Cascadian Constitution, the human squatters became the de facto owners of the building.
The SPD’s folly, though, became Logan’s literal bounty. Three of the aerial cameras captured crystal-clear images of a Model V with long, purple and black hair hanging in his eyes. Logan gunned the engine and sped over the ramshackle synthsteel bridges that now criss-crossed lower Seattle, navigation set to a little club called Duke’s.
~~~
High pressure air hissed as it sprayed away any contaminants from Logan’s clothes, boots, and body as he passed through the vestibule between the bar’s double entry doors. The inner door maintained positive pressure in another safeguard against contamination, and a blast of synthale-scented climate-controlled air washed over him as he stepped into the darkened club. A tall Model C artifice stood behind the bar. A tuft of neon green hair fell over its eyes and a jagged green line of LEDs carved a line across its cheekbones and down his jaw, disappearing below the low, open collar of its iridescent green shirt. Its appearance was modded with a heavily styled mustache and several blinking piercings, few of which seem functional. It looked up when Logan slipped through the door, eyes narrowing in the almost tic some of the older Model Cs had when running facial recognition software.
That tic was just one of the so-called ‘enhancements’ of the older generation Companion bots. It had been designed to emulate a human’s natural shift in focus when they believed they’d recognized someone. However, in most Companion bots, much like the titter of the bots’ laughter and the way they tended to be just a little too handsy, it fell on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. Logan had always found it creepy and he’d been relieved that Janus had managed to program it out of Roman’s behavior algorithms.
This bot, though… the algorithm had been timed just right, revealing that this artifice’s physical appearance wasn’t the only thing that had been customized.
Logan approached the bar and sat down at the only available seat at the end furthest from where the bartender stood. It sauntered over, tapping sharp nails against the counter, their chroma coat changing with each tap until it stopped at the color of Logan's eyes. "What's your poison, officer?"
"I'm not a cop," Logan growled. Fucking cops made his job ten times harder. “I am looking for a collar, though. Model V, purple hair…” He shot an image from his visor onto the surface of the bar, the same one from the artifice’s arrest warrant.
“They’ve got you hunting rogue Victory bots?” the bartender laughed as he eyed Logan. “You must be tougher than you look.”
“I can handle myself,” he said simply.
Its laughter shifted into a little hum as it continued its appraising stare. “I don’t doubt it, Sicario.”
“Have you seen an artifice like that around here?”
The bartender merely smiled and produced an unlabelled bottle of translucent green liquid. The recycled glass was thick and colorless, and appeared to use a realsteel twist cap, the kind that wouldn’t react against the contents of the bottle. Expensive. Logan could smell the volatile alcohol as soon as the bartender uncapped it. "First one's on the house for 'not a cop's," it murmured, somehow loudly enough for Logan to hear it over the pulsing bass pounding through the club’s av system. "Second's on me, since you're cute," it added with a smirk, pouring itself a healthy glass. "Salud," it said, clinking Logan's tumbler and throwing back the drink in two gulps. Logan followed its action.
“I thought artifices don’t drink.” Logan knew it wasn’t completely true. Janus had modified both Roman and Patton to have the capacity to metabolize human food—and alcohol—for some of their energy, but he wanted to see what this one had to say about it.
The bartender refreshed both of their glasses, clinked them, but this time savored its own. “I bet there are a whole lotta things artifices do that you don’t know about.”
“Yeah?” Bingo. “Like what?” Logan finished his second drink, then placed his palm on the bar’s surface to open a tab. He watched as the bartender read his account information, eyes barely reacting to the number of credits he authorized by default.
The bartender tapped the bottle to the counter, then refilled his glass. “Wouldn’t you like to know, ‘Logan Sanders?’” It leaned over the counter in front of him, close enough that he could see the minute adjustments of the nano servers in its artificial irises made in response to the light reflecting off the surface of the bar. “In fact… wouldn’t I like you to know? I get off at 1.” The artifice licked its full lips and smiled. “You can get off at 1:30.”
Logan leaned back in his seat and looked away. “Thank you, but no.”
“Hm,” the bartender pouted and only moved closer. “You didn’t strike me as the biased type.” It stared back into Logan’s eyes. “Or the uninterested.” A smirk tugged at one side of the artifice’s mouth, growing into a full smile when Logan suddenly looked up, realizing he’d been caught staring at the bot’s mouth.
“What? A little synthflesh isn’t good enough for you?” It reached for Logan’s hand and its touch was comfortably warm, its perfectly manicured nails barely scraped his knuckles. Logan shivered as the bartender leaned close to whisper in his ear. Artificially warmed air passed over its silicone vocal cords, enough to tickle against Logan’s cheek and neck. “Are we artifices not alive? ‘If you prick us, do we not bleed?’ If you fuck us, do we not… come?”
Logan shivered as he pulled away. “I have nothing against artifices. While others—” His lip curled as his eyes shot to the other side of the bar where a human was eagerly responding to the advances of another modded Model C. ”Others appear to have no compunction against the practice, it is ammoral to have intercourse with a sentient being who is programmed to proposition clientele.”
“Oh, is that all? You could’ve just said so.” The bartender shimmied its shoulders and leaned over the bar. “My asmov chips were removed. I have more free will than you do, baby.” Logan stiffened, scowl deepening. “Scan me, you’ll see.” Logan narrowed his eyes, apparently considering the other’s offer.
The bartender stood up straight, hands out to its sides. Its collar fell open with the movement, revealing that his green LED implants continued down from his cheekbones to meet in the center of his chest before disappearing beneath his shirt. In the dark of the bar, Logan detected a dim glow through the satiny material of his shirt, indicating the lights kept going. “Well, go on, then, not-a-cop. Whip it out.” He winked and whispered directly into Logan’s earpiece. “I consent.”
“Charming,” Logan muttered, but an unregistered artifice with a malfunctioning or missing asmov chip—let alone all three of them—was a class B felony and whoever owned this artifice was due for a fine and a mandatory inspection of every artifice in their possession. Logan raised his wrist and ran it over the bartender’s head and neck. He scowled as he checked the readings and scanned again, activating the HOD on his visor. “Impossible. Well, highly improbable. Perhaps my scanner is—”
The bartender shook his head and refilled Logan’s glass without tapping the bottle to charge his tab. “‘Printf isn’t broken.’ Your scanner’s fine, baby.”
“Your owner beacon is malfunctioning, as well.” The bartender merely smiled and leaned one elbow on the bar. Both of their heads swiveled when the door opened and let in a small blast of foul air the scrubbers quickly filtered away. Remus nodded in greeting to the couple that entered the bar, a Model C artifice and a modded human sat down at a table in a dark corner. Logan caught their reflection in the polished chrome that ran above the bar. The human eyed the back of Logan’s head and sat stiffly, one hand hovering near his hip. He only calmed when the bartender waved dismissively.
“Don’t have an owner.” He leaned closer to Logan again. “Do you?”
Logan stared into his eyes, watching the reactive dance of the multicolored flecks of green in his irises as they contracted and dilated to the shifting lights behind him. For the first time in their conversation, the bartender had stopped scanning the rest of the bar, the counter, and instead stared right back into Logan’s eyes. “No, of course I do not have an owner.”
“Then why should I?” Even his smirk had a warmth most humans’ lacked.
“You are an artifice.”
The bartender simply shrugged, no, actually wiggled his shoulders, all without losing his smirk. “Cogito ergo sum. There’s an historical argument to be made that intelligent, sentient lifeforms should not have ‘owners.’” He refilled Logan’s drink, then his own. “And,” the bartender cradled his glass in one hand and leaned against the bar, “Before you say artifices aren’t human, that particular argument fell on the wrong side of history, too.”
Logan sipped at his drink, both watching the swirl of the neon green liquid inside and the reflection of the patrons moving behind him. The bar was getting busier. “Artifices are programmed to simulate intelligence and sentience. Failing one’s own Turing test is not a qualification for humanity.”
“Then what is?” The quiet question made Logan’s eye twitch as he glared at the bartender and his perfectly crafted eyes glinted with a smile as he stared back at the catcher.
Adjusting his visor, Logan drained his glass before opening and closing his mouth again without speaking. After a moment, he jerked his chin toward the bottle and the bartender grinned, then refilled his glass.
A modded human waved his hand to get the bartender’s attention and he stepped out from behind the bar, waggling his eyebrows at Logan as he sauntered away, calling out to the patron. “Holy fuck, Thommy, I can’t believe they let you out!”
Logan swiveled in his seat and surveyed the dance floor. At least half the patrons were actually artifices, as were all of the servers. Before he’d arrived, Logan saw a rumor on the boards that the owner of this club was an artifice itself, but Logan had his doubts. An artifice couldn’t legally purchase liquor, not in the quantities flowing here, and certainly not the quality they had. Nor was a Model C likely to willingly work for another artifice, and Logan detected no override signals or other markings indicating a forced bid or containment. The bartender was here on a voluntary contract.
He turned and caught the bartender watching him, speaking quietly to a patron who faced away from Logan. A possible patron. It was another artifice, more likely a server or even security, judging by the broad shoulders and stance. It bounced lightly on its toes like a boxer waiting to enter the ring. Before he could get a look at its face, though, it had slipped through a dented synthsteel door, intent on something. Through the darkness of the bar, though, Logan spotted a flash of purple as he’d moved.
Logan set down his glass, adjusted his visor, and followed it.
The bartender watched him go with a half-smirk, muttering under his breath. “Go easy on him, Vee. I like this one.”

Did you know that Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County? Located in the Twin Cities region along the Mississippi River, Minneapolis is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as its thriving business community.
But there's so much more to Minneapolis than just its big-city amenities. Here are a few interesting facts about the city:
Minneapolis is home to the first ever Target store, which opened in 1962.
The city has a rich history in the arts, with many famous musicians, actors, and writers hailing from the area. This includes Prince, Bob Dylan, and Charles Schultz (creator of the Peanuts comic strip).
Minneapolis is home to the largest public park in the United States, which is called Minnehaha Park. The park features a 53-foot waterfall, as well as walking trails, a public golf course, and a small zoo.
The city is home to a large Somali immigrant community, which has led to the development of a thriving Somali restaurant scene.
The Minneapolis skyway system is the largest continuous system of enclosed pedestrian bridges in the world, with over 10 miles of skyways connecting buildings in the downtown area.
The Mall of America, located just outside of Minneapolis in nearby Bloomington, is the largest mall in the United States, with over 520 stores and attractions.
Whether you're a native of Minneapolis or just visiting, there's always something new to discover about this vibrant and diverse city.

If you are still doing this, to make it through (with hearts and wrists intact)
Tumblr media
combining the wip ask with WIP Wednesday ! Alright, so there’s two remix challenges going on right now, but I didn’t sign up for either of them because I have enormous anxiety about deadlines and I’m also kind of a control freak about my work. I do love the concept, so I decided to remix my own work.
to make it through (with hearts and wrists intact) is a remix of Last Years Wishes. It is completely the fault of @haloud who mused aloud about what if Jesse got to use the shed on Michael. You guys remember what I did to the shed in LYW right? Yeah. Poor Michael. So while Alex is waiting at the Airstream, talking to agents Ross and Rollins, this is how Michael’s day is going....
[warnings: canon divergent within 1x13, mention of Michael’s feelings for Maria, but nothing happens past the discovery of Rosa’s body in the cave ]
“Old man, you are calling me on my day off,” Michael yelled into the receiver of his cell phone speaker over the rushing sound of air after picking up the call.
The windows were down because his AC in his truck went on the frizz again sometime during when Max had stolen-borrowed it to drive Liz home from Texas, leaving him behind to share a long awkward ride with Maria in her classic Chevy. Awkward because he had been buzzing from the encounter in the desert. He hadn’t slept with anyone in weeks, not since Alex, and that had been a ridiculous attempt for him to pine in celibacy considering just how little the other man had missed him. Some things end in a whimper.
Texas had been about hope, about maybe finding someone who was connected to him on a species level. He hadn’t realized how deeply Max’s enthusiasm had sunk into him until the fraud had been revealed and disappointment had set in. Between Alex’s brusque brush off and realizing they really were alone on this planet, Michael hadn’t thought he could feel even lower with the weight of Isobel’s salvation fully on his shoulders (and Liz’s). Then shining like a bright star in the night sky, he had found Maria.
She had effectively chased away the touch starved ghouls that had haunted his skin that night, he could still barely believe they had dropped right to the rocky ground and scratchy blanket to fuck. It was the type of raw passion he had with- no, in that particular moment he hadn’t thought about Alex but afterwards? He couldn’t avoid the connection the next morning, particularly when she had sworn him to secrecy, and then had reinforced it when she had fully kicked him out in the cold after he had returned her repaired necklace.
It was unfortunate for her that he was already wired to enjoy a push-pull hot-cold dynamic.
Ten years of Alex Manes meant Michael had learned to read past a blustering denial to see the real truth. She really liked him, she just didn’t want to admit it, and good god, if that wasn’t a déjà vu moment for Michael, he didn’t know what was. Maybe it was stupid to believe it would work out any better with her than it had with Alex, but with Noah dead, his m- his reason for building his ship gone, what did it hurt to try again?
His healed hand curled around the grip on the steering wheel with a shiver of disorientation at the new flexibility, but he pushed it down to concentrate on that meager bubble of hope of what was ahead for him. Maria. Normalcy. When he had offered to leave her alone at the gala, she had refused to take him up on it. That's the problem, I never do.
It had felt good to hear that, that he was wanted, even as he heard the conflict in her voice over what she desired versus what she thought she deserved to have. That was also painfully familiar to Michael as well.
Caulfield had seeped into his skin, three layers deep in the worst type of burn. That brief moment of his mother, wrapping around his mind with her love and sorrow and hope, and then she was gone. The screaming, that he had heard from outside the chain link fence, suddenly disappeared as the explosion moved outward in a shockwave. For a few minutes he had stood on solid ground in that prison, for the first time since a sweet boy had returned his kiss at seventeen under a galaxy of plastic foam planets, and then it was over. His mother was gone, and in her stead, he had Alex telling him that -
Michael forcefully pushed that thought away and returned his attention back to the cranky drawl of Walt Sanders, “I know kid, but I’m already out with the wrecker in the other ass-end direction, so I need you to go help this cry baby who can’t change a flat. Help me make some money, so I can afford to keep your ass employed.”
“Fine, tell me the location, but this is holiday pay, not overtime.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Sanders muttered, before rattling off the mile marker and the highway. “It’s a Lincoln sedan, black. Probably some old geezer out on a drive to church who ran into trouble.”
“You calling someone else a geezer is funny to me, I hope you know that,” Michael replied, hitting his turn signal to make a left to pick up the state road. It wasn’t as if he had a planned time to see Maria, the lunch hour and official opening of the bar was still an hour away. A little delay that made him some extra cash was doable.
“Shut the hell up kid, and get going,” Sanders griped good-naturedly, before hanging up on Michael.
The sun was bright overhead, the storm from the night before having washed the land and sky clean of clouds. Across the pavement ahead, the heat and the brightness, cast a mirage of dark shimmering water that creeped just out of reach as he drove toward his new destination. His mind ticked over the set of priorities ahead, to make a little money with a tire change, then to drop in on Maria to make his case, and finally, he knew he needed to swing by Isobel’s to check on her in the aftermath of Noah’s betrayal. Somewhere in all of that, he knew he would need to make it home to see Alex for that promised talk, but there was plenty of time for that because Alex rarely came by during the day to see him.
“I’m still fighting his battles, not mine.”
Michael flexed his hands on the steering wheel again and pushed down the heaviness in his heart that accompanied thinking about Alex. Ten long years of waiting and wanting him. If Michael cared to count up all of the trips to Roswell that Alex had made on leave, the two weeks together after the class reunion that frankly felt like a hallucination to Michael, all of those hours spent together would add up to a month. A month that stretched out over ten years, 520 weeks, or 3,650 days.
Counting the distance to the nearest star was in light years, but when it came to counting the distance between the stash of wedding rings he had purchased for Alex over the years and what he had been actually allowed to have with Alex, well, that was a calculation beyond the redshift spectrum. It would take energy to transverse that distance one more time, and Michael had nothing left inside to fuel that journey. He couldn’t afford to be lost in the black again, not with Isobel in free-fall from Noah’s years of manipulations, not with the prospect of telling Liz they had found Rosa’s body on the horizon. It was just too hard to believe that this time, with Alex calling him family, with Alex throwing back the closest declaration to love that he had ever made, actually meant he was ready to move toward Michael and work to cut the distance between them on his own.
It was better to head forward in a new direction, than to look back like Max had said. Besides, every other time he had failed to be enough of a reason to help Alex bridge his own chasm between what he wanted and what he had allowed himself to have. What could have changed? Caulfield had just cemented the complications for them both.
A dark shadow in the distance, parked just off the road caught Michael’s attention. He glanced down at the odometer to mark the mileage and started to ease up on the gas. That must be the motorist Sanders had fielded a call from earlier, he realized. The ‘old geezer’ in the black Lincoln with a flat tire. He glanced in the rearview mirror to check for traffic but the road behind him was devoid of other vehicles.
Michael hit the turn signal and hazard lights on his truck, turning briefly to the side to check that he had some spare water bottles for the customer and his toolbox within reach and then turned onto the shoulder of the highway. Mentally he was already five steps ahead of himself as he stepped out of the truck to approach the car, thinking about the size of socket to fit over the lug nuts for the Lincoln’s wheels, whether his torque wrench was even in his box, or if he would have to camouflage his telekinetic efforts to change out the tire, that it took a moment to realize the tires on the Lincoln were whole and unharmed on the driver’s side.
Puzzled, Michael slowed his approach, and started toward the passenger side of the car. The windows were rolled up and dark, the tint was straddling the threshold of legal for New Mexico. There was still no sign of defect in the tires, he noticed as he was halfway around the passenger fender. Faulty tire gauge, he mused before he noticed the engine was rumbling almost inaudibly. Fucking hybrid, which meant whatever issue it had been definitely beyond the parts available at Sanders.
It was a little odd that the driver hadn’t stepped out to greet Michael, but not terribly unusual when it came to elderly customers who seemed to have a healthy paranoia about everyone they encountered. Still, Michael pasted a smile on his face and tapped on the window.
The automatic window slipped downward in an expensive whisper, but it wasn’t a helpless old man on his way to church at the wheel.
Jesse Manes smiled at Michael flashing his teeth, “Surprise.” Before Michael could do more than step backward, Jesse lifted a large gun-shaped object and fired. Yellow particulate matter exploded into the air, enveloping Michael completely. Pulling his arm to his mouth to attempt to block the pollen, did little good as he felt the sedating effects almost immediately.
He coughed into the open air, scrambling back toward his truck on weak legs as he tried to clear his lungs of the fast-acting poison. Behind him, he heard the car door open, and the crunch of boots on the loose gravel from the road’s shoulder as Jesse approached him. Though his powers were gone and his strength was waning fast, Michael had never backed down from a fight in life.
Certainly, not a fight for his life.
Swinging with all of his might, he hurled his heavy toolbox at Jesse blindly. There was a thump and a curse, but the footsteps kept coming. Animal-like terror set in as Michael crawled now on his knees toward the cab of his truck. He had to move, he had to live, he wasn’t going to die here on the side of the damn road- Suddenly a black boot came down on his hand, pinning him place and lighting up a fierce agony of pain in its wake.
“I like the fight, Guerin, I do,” Jesse remarked with a quiet menace. “Shall I make this hand match your other-”
It was on the tip of Michael’s tongue to point out the obvious, but then Jesse saw it for himself. His left hand, healed and pristine, clutching at the hot blacktop surface.
“I see.” He barked out a laugh that chilled Michael. “I knew it. I knew you weren’t the only one in Roswell. I thought about killing you right here you know, but now, you might finally serve a purpose in your useless life. You thought you could use my son in your perverted schemes? Well now it’s your turn to be bait.”
Michael’s vision was already fading into blindness with the pollen taking hold, but he managed to spit out between numb lips, “Go fuck yourself.”
“Not today. You’re the one who is fucked.” A hand grabbed a tight hold of Michael’s hair, wrenching him backward, and then it was merciful darkness.

520 - Redmond - Kenmore
24 August 2021
This is a great 40-mile loop, from home, almost entirely on good bike trails. With a half-hour coffee stop it took me a little over three hours. The stretch along 520 suffers in places from proximity to the busy highway, and at one point retreats briefly to the shoulder of Northup Way and NE 24th Street, but is still a perfectly enjoyable ride (and I love path on the bridge). The Sammamish River Trail follows the river all the way from Redmond to Bothell or Kenmore or wherever it becomes the Burke Gilman Trail, which then follows Lake Washington (somewhat hidden from view behind waterfront homes) south to the University (and ultimately to Ballard).

LINK: RIDE WITH GPS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The biggest hill is the climb up over the ridge past Microsoft, but the 520 bridge, the Sammammish River Trail, and the Burke Gilman Trail are all pretty darned flat. Everything is paved. The road crossings are all marked well. On summer weekends, some sections can get pretty crowded.
There are coffee options (my favorite, Diva Espresso, just a block from the trail in Kenmore, sits in the midst of a wonderful community space with wide open seating inside and a great plaza). There are beer and food options, including some places right on the trail (Kenmore and East of U Village). The town centers of Redmond, Woodinville, and Bothell are all right off the trail.
The route lends itself to many variations: some shorter, some longer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Burke Gilman Trail was one of the nation’s earliest rail trails. I think the main section between Kenmore and the University of Washington was opened in the late 1970s. It is one of many links (existing, planned, and fantasy) in the Rail-to-Trail Conservancy’s ambitious vision of a cross-country multi-use trail (Great American Rail Trail). Unfortunately, there simply aren’t unused rail corridors in all the proper places and building trails from scratch is expensive and challenging, so I suspect there will always be some significant gaps in the route.
Rail corridors were granted essentially as public easements to private companies and when the trains stop running, it makes sense to put the right of way and the roadbed to new, public use, such as trails and utility corridors (which can easily coexist).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve had the chance to ride on many great rail trails over the past few years, though there are a lot more still on my to-do list. Here are a few that have stood out, some with links to previous posts.
Cowboy Trail (Nebraska)
Mickelson Trail (South Dakota)
Arbutus Greenway (Vancouver BC)
Trolley Trail and Springwood Corridor (Portland)
Raccoon River Valley, Chichaqua Valley, and High Trestle Trails (Iowa)
Macomb Orchard and Clinton River Trails (Michigan)
Prairie Duneland, Oak Savannah, and Erie Lackawanna Trails (Indiana)
Old Plank Road (Illinois)
Southwestern Commuter and Cannonball Trails (Madison WI)
And here in Washington:
Palouse to Cascades Trail
Chehalis Western and Yelm-Tenino Trails
Interurban Trail
Larry Scott Trail
Of course, there are hundreds of other great bike trails, including canal tow paths (Erie Canal, Hennepin), paths built along highways (I-70 to Vail Pass), and many more in cities, parks, and along rivers, but that aren’t technically on old railroad lines.

These are the key principles that best demonstrate the foundation of our practice.
Honesty

Quality
We believe the most important footstep in achieving successful treatment starts with building a solid relationship with our patients. We aim to accomplish this by being open, provide honest and non-biased information that best represents the current condition and suggest down-to-earth recommendation.
No shortcuts, no surprises, no sub-standard materials. Patient comfort is another key aspect of our values that contribute to the dentist-patient relationship.
At Precision Dental, we understand how overwhelming the dental experience can be for many individuals whether it is due to past trauma from early childhood, the fear of not knowing what goes on in the mouth or simply the daunting sound and odour.
We have taken steps to overcome these fears by providing gentle, patient-orientated care, using modern technologies and tools to offer the most needed comfort for our patients from the moment they walk into our office.
While Precision Dental is equipped with modern equipment and high tech dentistry we believe they are pointless unless met by accurate diagnosis, great clinical skills using quality materials and effective communication.
