The popular ideal of the author as a mad genius / antisocial hermit is a myth. Fiction writing (and art in general) is fundamentally just a way of communicating with people, and the author/reader relationship is just another kind of relationship. At the end of the day you’re telling people a story.

Assuming you want readers (and aren't writing purely for yourself), you don't have to go through a steely-eyed market calculation to find them. It’s about what stories will reach the people you want communicate with (and what avenues you have to reach them), which means taking into account other people’s desires as well as your own. Figuring out what to write involves the same balance between what you want to express and who will receive it that occurs in ALL relationships.

For me ideally this would be all part of participating in a larger community centred around a given subset of writing and art, which includes audiences and artists and shades between. Establishing that connection transforms the whole process from the ground up, enriches and deepens it. It's night and day from working completely alone.
