This might just be a high thought or something because I'm smoking a little right now, but what's guys deals with hating buff women (Now I'm not saying all of them of course, I'm a guy who would risk it all for a buff woman) but to me, guys who make fun of or hate on women who work out and get buff are probably jealous. Love buff women, women that work out and enjoy it keep it up

You know, I really like how Yana has a different “Yuu” for each chapter in the TWST manga.

I hadn’t a moment to truly look at it until now - but I feel like the story is perfect for an alternate reality theme. The only way any Yuu would be able to ‘fix’ every problem would be if they were some kind of Mary Sue or shounen protag.

I love how each Yuu is reflective of the Dorm leaders. Of *course* the Heartslabyul chapter is going to have a strong, buff, very jock-like Yuu. That’s the complete foil of who Riddle is. Not to mention how it’s reflective of the Dorm’s rambunctiousness.

And *of course* Savanaclaw’s Yuu is a woman. Women are powerful and respected in the Sunset Savannah. Leona’s more likely to listen to a female Yuu, and most of the students in his dorm are strength-oriented that would crumble under the authority of a feminine god.

Then we have Octavinelle’s Yuu - my favorite, personally. He loves food, has a tender heart, and has a bit of chub. Now - yes he’s what Azul fears he will become but *also* I think this Yuu is reflective of Azul’s mother and her ideals. Or at least is the man she was raising Azul to be until his self-hatred began. I feel like most Octavinelle students have a flip side to them, so a Yuu that’s true to himself is perfect for this chapter.

I write my fics similar to this actually - every character has a Yuu in my mind that I think would match them. I don’t just write with one personality for Yuu in my works. Just an example, but the Yuu I place with Deuce is extremely different than the one I put with say Floyd when writing. Both physically and personality wise. It gets a bit wishy-washy since I have to write in 2nd person most of the time, but it’s still there when I’m formulating scenarios. Especially when I write anything that has dialog or flitters into Yuu’s thoughts. This really came out when writing the plot for my game since it’s dialog heavy.

I won’t make it because I’m already doing one game (and I want to move on after this), but there’s some good wiggle room for an alternate reality spinoff using TWST. Like once TWST finishes its main plot, there could definitely be some branching where Yuu has a bit more personality and different routes to go down depending on their chosen dorm.

I love this so much! The way I can picture an exasperated Mihawk just wanting to be left alone, but these three just make his life all the more entertaining.

I love himbo. I'm already infatuated with him. No wonder I've been drawn to the Kid Pirates lately 😭. Bimbo has me down bad just as much. Her little chat with the humandrills and then siding with her makes me so happy. Then there's Thembo, the one person Mihawk so desperately needs. Even though they're silly, Mihawk likely appreciates their presence the most.

Also, why am I picturing Zoro, Perona, and Buggy? Because they fit pretty good in those roles I think. Zoro as a Himbo never stops making me laugh.

For sure! I love the series as a whole because it's not near as sugar coated as a lot of other war-based books. You get to hear about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Granted, there's still some glossing over of details, but overall it's very tastefully done. And I really appreciate how it mirrors real life events and people. This adds quite a bit of credibility to the alternative timeline of the book, just because it did happen historically and we know the outcome. Now we just added a female presence.

As for the characters, they are really well done, especially the badass female leads. Rio richlin is just *chef's kiss* and by far my favorite. Rainy is a close second. I also appreciate the character development in this series, both individually and within their interpersonal relationships. It's very realistic and believable based on what the characters are going through. I'm especially impressed with Geer's development, as a person learning how to work in a group and how not to be a general ass all the time. Then there's the relationship he has with Pang throughout the series, going from being very racist, to having a great working relationship/friendship, to becoming a huge advocate after the war and Pang's death. I liked seeing Rio herself and her relationship with Castain develop too as the war progressed. I could go on about that quite a bit. And of course I wish there was more Rio/Jack and that she had dumped Strand's ass to the curb as soon as he couldn't handle her success. But, that also speaks a bit to Rio's people pleasing nature (and the social standards at the time), even though being in the war/command positions should have given her some more confidence.

Other than that, this just makes me realize how much I'm due for a reread lol

First of all, I'm so sorry this took a month to answer 😓 My computer has been out of commission and the thought of typing up (and then probably reorganizing) a long, semi-coherent response on my phone made me want to chuck it in a lake. Please know I've been thinking of this every day because I'm so excited to talk about these books with someone again!!

Anyway.

My friend, you've taken the words right out of my head with everything you wrote here. I'm with you 100% on all of this. (putting the rest of this under a cut to spare the masses)

You're so right on the realism - I feel like so many other historical fiction books are either sanitized for younger (or squeamish) audiences, or they swing to the complete opposite direction and become a bit dry with the level of detail unless you're a super history buff. Purple Hearts in particular was hard to read at times, but I think maybe it should be. There were a lot of ugly things that really happened, and I'm glad to find an author that doesn't shy away from it for the sake of a squeaky clean image of the allies.

I think I said it in another post a long time ago, but I'm so fascinated by the butterfly effect possibilities this story presents. Obviously the women in canon have proven that they're highly effective in all kinds of roles previously restricted to men, but does that continue after the war? Would it change anything for women in the workforce during peacetime? Or would there still be regression to "traditional" gender norms similar to what we saw in the 40's and 50's? I wish there was more fic or meta for these books because I would love to hear tons more ideas on this.

I could go on about Rio for hours, too. The way she goes from only signing up because Jenou did (and she would follow Jenou off a cliff if asked, I think) to being a highly respected, highly decorated NCO and figuring out she's good at this is one of my favorite things. The section with Strand telling her she's just "playing soldier" is so interesting because if I remember correctly (I'm due for a reread too, it's been a while), she does fight back on that idea at first, but I can see her start to believe it assuming he keeps it up back home.

And Strand. Strand. I too wish he would have been kicked to the curb for the sake of truth, justice, and the American Way, but at the same time, as a piece of fiction, I'm kind of glad he didn't. Most people don't walk away from unhealthy relationships at the first red flag (or second... or third...), and I think there's a fine line to be walked here between normalizing this kind of behavior in relationships and helping people to feel less alone in their own struggles. Unfortunately for our characters, I feel like staying with him fits Rio's MO and realities of the day just as you said. There's something to be said for nostalgia, too, especially when they keep meeting up during the war. He's a little slice of home when she's knee deep in mud and gore, and maybe a little glimpse of the girl she would have been without a war. Who wouldn't want that? Again, there are 1000 fics to write on this... what was the final straw to get her to leave?

But what I would give to see the Strands of the world get what's coming to them....

On the other side, Jack is definitely one of my favorites. He's hilarious in the first book, and I so wish he would have gotten more screentime in the 3rd. But again, for historical accuracy, I can see why he's not when he's reporting to Rio, and why she shoots him down. (Even though it's so painful to read 😭)

What I really love about this though, along with the epilogue, is the theme of relationships and professional success coming later in life. Frangie's married and has kids (teenagers even!) before she becomes a doctor, but she's a doctor nonetheless!! And Rio's been divorced for years and has been in a long relationship-free spell before Jack walks back into her life (presumably with Rainy's meddling). It's so refreshing to see characters who don't have it all figured out at 22, or settle down with their first love, or reach their wildest dreams on the first try. But they keep growing and changing and living, and I think we could all stand to do a little more of that.

gay himbo write-up

It has come to my attention that Tumblr does not know about Mitch Downe, gay himbo.

Mitch Downe (from the movie Paranorman (2012)) was a side character that could, perhaps, be described as a himbo. Let's examine this. Three core tenants of himbo are thus: buff/hot (personally I lean more towards a himbo having to be attractive, since not all men are able to achieve or desire the large body type, and I'm all about #inclusivity and #bodypositivity /hj); kind, heart of gold, women respect juice in a flask by their hip ready to drink at any time; and dumb. Just dumb. Not much brain activity. I suppose a himbo, then, describes a man by the activity of his heart and body, not his mind.

Anyway. Let's see if Mitch fits the criteria.

This is where Mitch Downe stumbles as a certified himbo. He is kind of rude to the protagonist in one scene, calls a woman by an incorrect name in another, but he does help the protoganists out through their journey, so you kind of have to weigh that balance out yourself. He's so dumb he doesn't really appear to have much in way of a personality outside of it, neither positive nor negative? He does, however, respect women so much he doesn't date them. (/j)

I expected Mitch to be an obscure choice, and in hindsight, he was not the best choice for a 'Himbo of All Time' poll, (that space should've gone to Fraser, tbh, but didn't remember him I'm so sorry) but goddamn NO ONE? Storytime about Why I Personally Like Jotaro's Character

I think it's safe to assume that 90% of us ocean man simps (and/or the 11k followers of the joot tag) had to have hated the guy in the beginning, only to watch p4 and say "hold on wait a minute I'm feeling sumn" and then go back to p3 and say "oh shit hold up".

'cause when i first started p3, i remember jotaro calling holly a bitch and that led to my first impression of him: "Oh so if jonathan was the gentleman jojo and joseph is the wacky jojo, this is the edgy jojo. I'm sure I won't like him at all with that attitude".

let me tell you... i hate assholes. antagonists. absolute douchebags. the too obnoxious men, and edgy men for the sake of being solely edgy.

and i kind of had the same feeling of him throughout the first few episodes, and then the more the plot went, the more I got to see bits of his subtle heart of gold personality come through and I thought to myself "no way but he's still an asshole, why am i beginning to not hate him at all?"

but I couldn't bring myself to hate the guy when in certain moments he brings up his dorky one-liners, the tiny curl that forms his seldom smiles, his general badassery. So at the very least I now respected the dude by the end of p3.

And then p4 happened.

Oh man. Did 4taro do something because damn, this version of him was what got me simping for the man.

Idk what happened but right at the beginning of ep 1, I see him in that taxi in his white fit and immediately, I disregarded the sudden art change and already vibed with the first scene of jotaro in that moment.

and i was greatly confused to say the least. I've been keenly aware of my tastes in fictional men and so far before joots, they were often very.....

let's just say... "young anime boy" visuals.

soon after, even if i was enjoying josuke and his friends in their slice of life shenanigans, i admittedly looked forward for scenes where joot would be in it, got excited when he does something cool and badass, and just appreciate him just vibing silently in the background, probably thinking a million things at once- the murderer, his thesis, the stand arrow, his job etc.

cue to the end, and I really like like jotaro at this point. As in the "holy shit... my new fictional mans?" like.

I was in denial. Because no- Just no??? How did this happen?

Was it because he grew out of his angsty rebellious teen phase, and into this now mature professional, Stand expert, and mentor who's learned how to not be excessively rude while still keeping true to himself as seen in his stoicism, intelligence, and badass nature?

and then to realize he was a DILF in p6?? And a divorced man??? And that he explicitly shows the audience his feelings towards his family for the first time???

Oh man. I was never too into dilfs... but-

So I rewatched p3 scenes again and there I was able to like 3taro as much as 4taro and 6taro. I grew to notice more of his very subtle character amidst the rebellious façade- using that big brain of his in fights, the way he has fun with the crusaders by doing party tricks, the more amount of smiles he does that i failed to notice at first watch, understanding why he shouts at certain women, the utmost care and love he has for his friends and family and how much he'll go through just to keep them safe.

I even grew to love the rugged, buff design of 3taro, which I now admit is kind of a favorite now along with 4taro.

Ultimately, I like jotaro because even though he gives off a very bad first impression, you get to watch his character go through a bunch of events throughout the parts, and see how other bits of his sides and personality surface, develop, and change the more he grows in experience and age.

Idk if it's just me, but I am a sucker for quality character development and jotaro shows exactly that- from being a rebellious delinquent who walled his vulnerabilities behind a rude mask, to a wise mentor-figure who knows better than to be impulsive and rash, to a caring father who'll sacrifice the universe and himself for his only child to live.

holy shit this was l o n g but I needed to get this out of my system because my god, I love this man sm.

and i know i have ranted about this before, but istg, the dudebros be literally seeing jotaro's personality as nothing but a man who's misogynistic and simply punches his enemies to a pulp to solve the issue, without realizng that he has to think of ways of getting closer to the enemy in the first place. Hence why yall shallow mfers think he's a bland protagonist with the emotions of a brick wall smh.

This was a fun read! If you wanted to see more of Clecania and their many cultures/values: You are going to absolutely LOVE this books. You get to see so much of the world, it’s awesome!

As a heads up, the love plot for the two leads is resolved, but the overarching plot is left on a cliffhanger. You’re left wondering: Oh shit, what’s gonna happen next! Can’t wait for the next couple! ;w;

The main couple is fine, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Maxu. He felt like diet Theo. If that makes sense? He does have some interesting traits that make him different from his brother, but I was meh about him and his relationship with our leading lady. 

Overly Simplified Summary

Meg is having a great time going on a tour across Clecania with a couple other human women so the world can see/interact with humans. Until her fated mate smells her and goes on a manhunt trying to track her down.

I watched X (2022) after Pearl (2022) and here's what I thought...

Lord have mercy it's been a while hasn't it? Lets churn out one for the new year! As always: Spoilers under the cut! <3

I'm gonna do this one differently than my usual reviews since I haven't seen the movie in a while, instead of my typical play by play I'm gonna just tell you what I thought and talk about specific scenes. Now, I know this movie was the first in the series, but I was more drawn to the look of the prequel, and I hadn't heard much promo for this movie until my dad watched it alone and boasted to me about it being one of the most fucked movies he's ever seen and I knew I had to watch it. I will say if you're going into this movie expecting some super disturbing gore-fest...Prepare to be disappointed. Don't get me wrong AT ALL the blood and effects are beautiful and i thought the amount of violence was perfect. However don't be fooled. Anyone who says this movie is gross or disturbing or fucked up may just be echoing the point the movie is trying to make.

This movie is about getting older, its about sex and porno and being free but I genuinely think the main focus is getting older.

When we meet pearl she sees herself reflected in Maxine and that's made painfully clear by the choice to cast Mia Goth as BOTH Pearl and Maxine. Pearl consistently watches Maxine almost out of jealousy but I would even argue out of mourning...She's seeing this girl come to her home, This beautiful girl who looks just like her when she was her age, making those movies the projectionist showed her when she was younger. Seeing this girl with a boyfriend who wants to make her a star, with friends...I imagine its painful to a degree...

Pearl repeatedly expresses sexual desires she still has but can't act on them because she's too old...Harold's heart can't take the strain sex would put on it and she has no other outlets as the young adults are either disgusted with her and reject her advances (RJ and Max) or treat her as if she's a child. (Bobby Lynne) I loved these characters so much. While it pays homage to one of my all time favorite slashers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, It isn't like your typical slasher. These kids are lovable. These kids you want to see make it...Except maybe Wayne. You get snippets of their personalities and their motives as time goes on: Bobby Lynne wants to be a star like the other girls but also she thought about becoming a nurse because her nanna used to get confused. Jackson is a Vietnam vet who actually shows Howard immense respect unlike the typical rude kid persona we see in movies like these. RJ wants to make serious movies and is a cinema buff but he also cares a lot about his girlfriend Lorraine. Lorraine, while being the typical "pure" virgin character, also wants to join in and experience something new. Maxine came from an Evangelical christian household and seems to be escaping that constricting life with Wayne. One thing that I think is incredibly sad is when people mention how "fucked up" this movie is, the focus seems to center not on the gore or effects but...on the fact that it displays the elderly in a sexual light and wanting to still have sex. It's interesting because even in the movie, despite certain characters discounting the elderly couple (Wayne mentions something a long the lines of Harold forgetting how to use his dick) there is this scene where Bobby-Lynne is explaining things to Lorraine, and it's not a main focus in her statement, but she says that in the sex industry nothing matters, gay, straight, your race, or your age. I think we have a really idealized version of MILFs and Cougars, Older women with sexual desires, when we forget that often those "Older women" can look like pearl...

I thought the underlying message of even the elderly can want love and sex was sort of romantic and beautiful? I wish more people picked up on it and I'm certain I'm not the only one who did. It's just strange talking to anyone i know in person who saw this movie talk about it like it's so nasty and grotesque when it seems like the gore is somewhat minimal compared to the typical slashers I know these people watch? Now that's not to discount the effects AT ALL I loved what we did see when we saw it, RJ's blood spatter on the headlights, Wayne getting his eyeballs gouged out (that one actually made me cringe in my seat!) All of these were done pretty well while at the same time having this sort of....at home feel? I'm really not ragging on them i love practical effects and i don't know how much of this was practical but some of the effects feel like someone did it by hand, It felt akin to watching a movie from the 80s vs one modernly. Which honestly could have been the feel that they were going for.

The ending was sooo good too. I loved finding out that Maxine had some sort of tie back to this TV preacher we keep seeing. I loved the scene where she repeats him and you can hear on the TV him speak before her, "Say it with me now!" The one thing I don't like is how pearl turns on her at the end? Calling her a whore and what not however, I don't think this is out of character for pearl, she has a lot of outbursts like this in her prequel movie, the one that i can think of mainly is the scarecrow scene if you've seen Pearl (P.S. if you haven't oh my god?? go watch it?? even if you hated X I think Pearl is a reaaaally good stand alone film!) I do think it was fitting even if i didn't particularly like it. The end where Max drives off, hitting pearl on the way seems soooo fitting too. The comparison of pearl and max through the movie, their confrontation at the end where max wins and hits her with the truck after she falls and breaks her hip...It feels fitting maybe because of how the elderly and the young butt heads...Maybe how the young typically come out the end because the elderly pass away...I don't know maybe I'm reaching too far on this one. Over all a pretty good movie, I'd give it a 7/10 just because it seems like for how people hyped it up and the trailers hyped it up the gore and story elements just didn't scream at me that this was a fucked up movie. It definitely feels like a weaker movie compared to pearl, pearl worked so good as a stand alone film and I feel like X had potential to be that good? I think this was still a very good movie! I recommend it :) --- Post Notes: I'm sorry this one took so long. It's been a while since I actually watched X and I was really worried about this review not being as solid or as consistent as my pearl one. Lord Dominator, there's soooo much misogyny and demonizing women for not returning men's advances in her character. Literally ruined the show.

Friendship!

My artstyle is still heavily based on it. Also I learned about some writing mistakes to avoid.

The Funk! I love how it really showed Hater and Peepers' friendship. Also bonding over being horrible is funny.

The Toddler was kinda a weak episode. Not bad but...

The Eye on the Skullship! I love watchdogs so I was glad to see them get some focus!

There was literally nothing enjoyable about The Matchmaker. Not only was it incredibly heteronormative, but it established a pattern that twisted Wander and Sylvia's relationship and made it unhealthy. Sylvia was taught to ignore her own doubts and trust Wander without question. This was treated like a good thing. I also hate My Fair Hatey because as an aro (and someone who thought I was a girl at the time), it... literally broke my heart.

Sylvia's. The cyan and magenta with yellow and black accents is a really good look.

Ripov! She's soooo cool and I wish she got introduced far earlier. Maybe as part of the core cast instead of Dom. I'd love to see her and Sylvia bounce off each other. Directly related, I wish Captain Tim appeared more. He's such a large part of Hater's life, and his relationship with the watchdogs didn't get much focus.

Watchdogs by far.

Death Glare. Wouldn't want Peepers' obvious crush requited pre-character development and establishing a healthier (and far less toxic) friendship though. Btw I have no clue what Nomadic Heroes is.

Sylvia. She's my second favorite character and a pretty cool gal. ...And the only member of the main cast who isn't exhausting to be around.

The Skullship is super cool! And I'd love to see the watchdog homeworld... Can only interpolate what it's like from the Skullship's design and the watchdogs.

Peepers and Sylvia's gay/lesbian hostility and/or solidarity.

Yes. Most of them are prominent in season 2, although seeds were planted in season 1. I could write multiple essays. Most of them stem from misogyny and the distinctly Christian ideal of unconditional faith.

No one, I'm aro/ace. If I wasn't, Sylvia. Gotta admire cool buff women. I can also see Peepers' appeal, but he's horrible to be around and surely worse to date.

Sylander. Please stop ruining a rare m/f friendship with heteronormativity/amanormativity... Men and women can be close friends. There's no such thing as people being too close to "just be friends."

Rhubarb, meringue is kinda tasteless.

That's How We'll Get Her. I love how they bounce off each other! And how it shows that while Peepers and Sylvia are both realists, Peepers is an optimist that starts with "what will it take to get to my end goal?", in contrast to Sylvia being a pessimist who defaults to "how can we salvage this situation?" Also we didn't get nearly enough of Peepers and Sylvia singing.

I already mentioned the one that made me boil with rage so here's a touching one: When Sylvia called out the Lords of Illumination for tormenting Wander.

Backstories, character development. They had a lot of good ideas but wasted time with that all-consuming love interest subplot.

Frankly? No. After season 2 it was a mercy kill. (And the whole Dominator thing, and tainting Wander's character by making him an infallible Space Jesus are not my only complaints.)

Peepers'! I don't remember the source but apparently a crew member said that they recorded Peepers singing The Commander Who Gave His Last Command. And they never released it??? A tragedy.

Things I would change in tgt

Alina would be a lesbian. Not bi or pan, personally i see as lesbian. And yes, zoya would be the love interest, the endgame, the soulmate!!!

Mal would be Alina's brother and protector. He would care for her and be there to support the main character, humanizing alina. And still, there could be tension, he doesnt want to lose her to grisha and they argue, as siblings do. But that would be his role.

Also mal would not be the amplifier and suddenly have a real role in the main plot. He's okay being a supportive character. Aleksander would be the amplifier. He's a morozova and an amplifier, it's right there. Also alina having to kill him to destroy the fold and killing him making her lose her power (killing part of her) would be poetic.

Genya would have not crossed Aleksander. She would be a radical supporter of him and his cause and she wouldnt settle with sending the king away. She would refuse to be just a victim, ruined by him. She would truly become ruination for him and his. But her heart would still be there and seeing Alina hurt or suffer at the hands of the darkling would cause conflict on her. Was she letting another powerful man abuse his power? Was she part of the problem this time? Conflict, development.

Zoya would be colder and meaner. Not simply a spoiled bitch to other women for being a pick me girl. She would be arrogant -- a flaw that mess with her high position. She would want to be The Darkling's favorite, a high ranked soldier, a leader. Someone to be feared and respected, never doubted. That would make her highly obedient until they were hunting Alina. The jealousy she felt for seeing Alina become someone people wanted to follow as a Saint and being sceptic of Alina's potential as a savior would make Zoya question why she was gone from the little palace. The whole family thing being her turning point could still work, but I'd make her have some questions about Aleksander's leadership first. Otherwise it just sounds like she was on board with anything the darkling did but once it affected her directly then she was against it and it does not make her look consistent at all. Is she just a soldier or does she have ambition to be more?

Zoya would lead the second army by Alina's request in s&s. I mean, if we used only characters known, it would be better to have someone who had experience by Aleksander's side, serving him and knowing his tricks. Alina leading the second army was a mess and it's explicitly told how she doesn't know what she's doing. She just want numbers to stop Aleksander without knowing what to do with them. Let Zoya grow as a leader, grow as a character that has to work with others too and prepare her for being the official general in KoS, as well as being the right hand to the new king.

This would also develop zoyalinas relationship!!!

But if you want zoyalai it would work too, because nikolai and zoya would have to actual develop a little bit of their relationship in the original trilogy, which wouldn't make kos and row feel so rushed and would give us some context on how it was when they started to work together.

Nikolai would be taken as hostage by Aleksander for information. (I didn't read the books on the right order, I read kos first and then tgt, so I was very curious what the darkling had done to nikolai during the civil war. I thought he had Nikolai in a dungeon, in shackles and with medieval instruments. Imagine my disappointment when I read he turned into a buff batman.) They are enemies with the same goal: lead the country and fix it. Aleksander wants Grisha to be safer. Nikolai wants to save the country from his family. So much potential for there being tension and resentment. Aleksander taking his frustration on the prince, using him as a weapon against Alina. The darkling isn't just Alina's enemy and opposite, he's a man with extreme ways that wants to steal Nikolai's (also) stolen throne and yet we never see the two of them truly see or address each other as enemies. Nikolai is just a side piece for the game between alina and the darkling.

This is just a few personal ideas. I could keep going but I'm okay with this. I'm sure everyone has their own version of fixing things

I don’t have a top 10, but I can do top 7/8, arranged in no particular order. I know I’ll sound like a broken record talking about them, but they’re all danmei characters because that’s the kind of fiction I enjoy nowadays. Some English titles are my translations and may differ from what fan translators call them, if fan translations of the books exist.

🚮🌶 Chi Xiaochi from “Don’t Pick Up Boyfriends from the Trash Bin” and Wei Wuxian from MDZS

Chi Xiaochi is an actor who carries out missions across various universes in exchange for a wish that will allow him to regain his life after a freak accident. Wei Wuxian, as most know, is a donkey-riding resurrected necromancer who solves mysteries.

They’re my favourite type of protagonist. Right from the start, they wow readers with jaw-dropping statements that infuriate other characters. I love their charisma, their humour, and the way they don’t always toe the line. They have the classic protagonist hallmarks: kind hearts, impressive intelligence/skills, and complex pasts that gradually unfurl as we read, but those things aren’t special on their own; it’s the authors’ prowess that makes them shine through creativity and the weaving of human problems through fantastical events.

An aside: Chi Xiaochi had/has a dog and is terrified of ghosts, while Wei Wuxian had/has ghosts and is terrified of dogs. These traits are important in their respective stories.

🐾 Bai Chunian from “Merman’s Fall” 《人鱼陷落》

Bai Chunian is a white lion alpha not-so-secret agent who works for the IOA, the International Omega Alliance. (If only there were a similarly influential International Women’s Alliance in our world.)

I like contrasts, and Bai Chunian has plenty. He’s rough yet gentle, immensely strong yet vulnerable, a leader and strategist who needs a guiding light in his life. He’s a bad-boy kind of tease, but he always ends up being the one who gets teased when he tries it on Lan Bo, his partner. (Lan Bo doesn’t even mean to tease. He’s just giving Bai Chunian replies from the heart; those replies just happen to be bawdy to the max.)

There’s something about the way Bai Chunian acts when he’s sad that triggers the urge to protect. You just want to give him all the nice things in the world.

🏋️‍♂️ Shen Qiuji from “Today I Am Forcefully Resurrected Again” 《今天我又被迫复活》

The love interest of a constantly haunted protagonist. By the standards of common danmei love interests/tops, he’s on the “useless” end of the spectrum, and by that I mean his protective capabilities are low because his ghost-busting skills are mediocre. Contrast him with, say, Hua Cheng from TGCF or Luo Binghe from SVSSS. Despite that, Shen Qiuji gives off a very strong sense of safety and reliability by dint of being a masculine fitness buff who chooses to be persistently there for the protagonist, Gu Rong. His presence is like an anchor.

Shen Qiuji may look stony-faced and somewhat intimidating, but he’s very affectionate with Gu Rong; he likes to cuddle and touch and—in the past, before he and Gu Rong went from being faux-enemies to lovers—annoy. It’s captivating. I think having someone who makes their existence tangibly felt and who wants to share your burden is a wonderful thing.

Plus, like many characters in the book, Shen Qiuji is hilarious.

Who wouldn’t want a friend like him? He strikes that sweet spot between poised and approachable. A kind person with an amiable attitude and an undercurrent of courage to do what other people don’t dare or care to do. Also, it’s super cute that he laughs easily and uncontrollably (I suppose this trait would have been more obvious when he had eyes). He sounds like a huge pleasure to be around.

Oh, and he has the prettiest name I’ve ever seen: “dawn stardust”, sounding like “little stars”. Additionally, it sounds like “the dawn star sinks”, echoing a line from an old poem and, in hindsight, foreshadowing his fate. I like wordplays!

Giving a supporting character like this a tragic ending makes him even more attractive to (sadistic) readers because it makes us mourn how good and beautiful things don’t last, sometimes.

🐀 Shen Jiu/Shen Qingqiu from SVSSS

Misunderstood villain in the book title. High-ranking scholarly lord in the No. 1 martial arts sect. Fierce battered batterer.

Another tragedy king, in a totally different flavour. I love contrasts in characters, so I love how hardened Shen Jiu is, how deliberately rough and tough he acted as he grew up, and yet he has this soft spot, this vulnerability pertaining to one person who (accidentally) helps shape his demise.

Speaking of his relationship with Yue Qi, there’s beauty in what-could-have-beens, in feelings burned and blackened before they could properly begin. There’s beauty in things only half said—no I’m not talking about Yue Qi’s tight-lipped idiocy, I’m talking about something that’s almost love but not completely there yet because no one’s said it out loud; only metaphors whisper it. I like metaphors and implications.

🌸🏡 Shi Mei and Hua Binan from 2ha (indirect but major spoilers below)

Guy who wants to go home. At almost any cost. (Lol, sounds like me when I was a kid.)

Yet another tragedy king, and this time it’s one who’s physically very lovely. (At this point, I can safely summarise my favourite supporting characters as “beautiful tragedies”.) I’m semi-blending Shi Mei and Hua Binan from both timelines into one person in my speech because I like both versions of the man whom child Hua Binan grew up to be. Same seed, same tree, just moulded to grow in slowly diverging directions.

I like characters who are stuck between a rock and a hard place; it doesn’t matter whether they’re protagonists or antagonists. And ethical dilemmas aside, I admire the way Hua Binan dreams big (and crazy), puts it into action, and succeeds. My reactions were both “wth, they actually did…that” and “what a relief, they made it”.

I like male characters who come across as tastefully demure and exquisite, their unfortunate rarity making them all the more precious. The demure part may have been acting in this case, but elegance is indisputably required to make it work. What’s more, this guy can pull off both styles: beautiful and handsome. He’d be a delight to look at. (Sidetracking: speaking of “delight to look at”, I dig Mo Ran’s strapping farmhand look too.)
