US postage stamp, 1989 “Prehistoric Animals” Scott #2422 - #2425
Issued: October 1, 1989 - Lake Buena Vista, Florida Quantity: 101,747,000 Designer: John Gurche Printed By: Bureau of Engraving and Printing (Lithographed and engraved)
To promote National Stamp Collecting Month. In fact, the campaign behind the Prehistoric Animals stamps was one of the largest up to that point. The USPS worked with MCA Home Video to include a flyer for the stamps in the video cassette packaging for the dinosaur-themed movie The Land Before Time. It was covered in the media, on the front page of USA Today, and in TV commercials. Many of these materials promoted that year’s slogan, “Begin an Adventure of Giant Proportions – Collect Stamps.”

The "Disney's Classics" pressings...
There were VHS "releases" of three Disney animated features that are kind of a clustercuss to talk about...
DUMBO, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and THE SWORD IN THE STONE were titles in the "Classics" line that Walt Disney Home Video used for the company's animated feature library from 1984 to 1994. These three films were unique in that they didn't return to the vault or go on moratorium. They were always, as "Classics" releases, available to purchase at any given time back in the day...
Now, these three titles had already received Classics releases in the mid-1980s. DUMBO in November 1985, followed by SWORD in March 1986, and then ALICE in May 1986. Pictured below were the final issues of those releases, from fall 1987. (They had seen minor packaging updates over the course of a year or so.)
Now you may be wondering... Hey, isn't that the same ALICE cover as the one at the top? It is!
You see, when DUMBO, ALICE, and SWORD received their Classics cover updates in September 1989, to promote the home video debut of BAMBI... Well, wait a minute... ALICE didn't. For whatever reason, Walt Disney Home Video continued to use the 1986/87 cover. Without even updating the heading from "Walt Disney's" to "Walt Disney's CLASSIC", to keep it in line with the other two updated covers...
These are weird "releases" because the only thing new about them - well, DUMBO and SWORD - were the cover artworks. Inside were the 1987 tapes and labels... (I do not have a 1987 SWORD release with a 1987-era label, myself, so it's not pictured below. My copy has a 1986-era label with the "Walt Disney Productions" copyright.)
... and they opened the same way as the '87 tapes, too: Red-orange FBI warnings (or just antipiracy screens if you got them in Canada) and the 1984 flipping text Classics animated intro sequence.
Some time around, I want to say towards the end of 1990... They made updates to the labels for DUMBO and SWORD...
Those new labels reflect the typography seen on the 1989 cover artworks. "Walt Disney's" is in a basic sans-serif font, this typeface also appears on the 1988 video release of CINDERELLA, and the 1989 video release of BAMBI.
They still open the same way, though...
Then, by mid-1991, we finally saw these releases get white-ink labels... Curiously, instead of having the diamond logo that says "THE CLASSICS"/"Walt Disney Home Video", we have a diamond that says "Disney's CLASSICS"... A diamond that appears nowhere else in the history of the Classics lines:
And these contained fully updated prints, too... The tapes now open with the 1989 Walt Disney Classics animated intro sequence, and the film prints used are different. DUMBO and SWORD IN THE STONE have a Buena Vista title card at their respective starts...
Curiously, DUMBO's ink label says "Walt Disney's CLASSIC"... But ALICE and SWORD use the old mid-80s headings...
Lastly, ALICE got a minor case update. The heading was finally changed from "WALT DISNEY'S" to "Walt Disney's CLASSIC" around early 1994...
But for whatever reason, they never gave ALICE a new cover. The LaserDisc release from around this period used a much different rendering of the Mad Tea Party scene. A release I do not have, but am familiar with...
Eventually, these would all be replaced when Disney ended the Classics line and started the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection. The day the line debuted, in October 1994 with the first-ever home video release of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, these titles were given all new covers, all-new tapes, all-new everything...
DUMBO and SWORD's Masterpiece covers, as you can see, re-use the 1989 Classics covers. ALICE uses the LaserDisc artwork, and an all-new logo for the movie. These would be in print until a later release of sorts. (In DUMBO's case, the 2001 60th Anniversary release. In ALICE's case, a 2nd Masterpiece release in 1999. And in SWORD's case, the 2001 Gold Classic Collection release.)

PREMISE
There’s the story the locals will tell you. How this town in the middle of nowhere didn’t fall to the sun and the sand like every other ghost town in California. How an actual miracle pulled Deadwater out of desolation. It’s a happy story; one old-timers will boast about. But that’s not what really happened. Of course it isn’t. But does it matter?
Welcome to Deadwater, California. Population 7,777 exactly. Suspiciously, this number hasn’t changed in at least several decades. Outwardly Deadwater seems to be an innocent enough tourist trap town you’d typically find along Route 66 and other such desert highways. Heck, there’s an entire theme park out here. Yet lost or wandering travelers tend to claim the town gives off an eerie vibe they can’t quite place.
Cars will randomly die while approaching or passing through Deadwater. Photographs taken within town limits have a habit of developing blurry or distorted. Even so, something about this place still seems to lure people in. You’d be surprised to hear how many townsfolk were once roadtrippers, ghost hunters or UFO enthusiasts intending only to stop by.
Maybe it’s the water.
KEEP IT WEIRD, DEADWATER
The town of Deadwater, CA sits in a paranormal hot-spot. Perhaps because the veil is unbelievably thin here. Ley Lines, they say. Or perhaps it has something to do with that Miracle the Historical Society loves to tout, granting the town and its long-term residents a kind of magical inclination. Whatever the reason, strange things happen here. Strange things can be seen here. So much strange goes on in Deadwater and the surrounding desert, in fact, that they aren’t considered strange at all. Here is a detailed running list of the kind of weirdness you can expect out of this town:
AUTOMOBILE BREAKDOWN
Entering or leaving Deadwater town lines can get a bit tricky when motorized vehicles have a tendency to break down out of nowhere, for no apparent reason. They simply stop functioning completely out of the blue. Of course, this doesn’t happen to every single car that drives to and from Deadwater, but it happens often enough that the only auto shop in this town sees good business year ‘round.
CONGREGATION OF CREATURES
Each district in Deadwater appears to have attracted their own strange congregation of creatures. For example, a massive murder of crows have made the downtown area of Heritage Park their home. In the Lowlands a haughty flock of wild turkeys roam the pavement like an intimidating street gang. Cats, on the other hand, can be found slinking around the hills of Buena Vista. Meanwhile the creatures that congregate in the Wilds…Well, let’s just say they’re something else.
CRYPTIDS
Probably Deadwater’s largest kept not-secret. No one really acknowledges that they exist to your face. You, being an outsider. But they know damn well cryptids are real. What’s more, the desert isn’t home to just one cryptid creature. There are plenty out there that haven’t been discovered yet. Cryptozoology isn’t some woo woo pseudoscience for us Deadwaterians. It’s a serious degree you can earn at Deadwater College for a reason.
DEAD ZONES
These are areas around the Wilds that will wreak havoc on electronics of any kind. Batteries drain rapidly for no discernible reason. Your mobile devices will turn on and off at random or suddenly start behaving as if it is hacked. But the most chilling thing about these Dead Zones is the fact that people caught in them usually experience lost time. Maybe because time itself runs oddly out there. Whether it speeds up or slows down is anyone’s guess. Maybe time overlaps. In any case, Dead Zones are constantly shifting. So unless you have an EMF detector on your hands, good luck out there.
FAULTY CAMERAS
Whether using traditional film or digital, chances are that if you try to take picture or video evidence of the strange entities that lurk around Deadwater, you’ll end up with trash. Images turn out too blurry to see anything. Footage will look distorted. You could always keep trying, but what’s that they say about the definition of crazy? The only semi exception is ghost photography. Pictures of spirits won’t develop crystal clear, but they do tend to come out a little more compelling.
THE GHOSTS
Seeing the dead is an everyday occurrence here in Deadwater. At least for the locals. For the most part they are treated like any other citizen of the town. Some even work. So please don’t be alarmed if you stumble across people chatting away to someone you can’t see for yourself. Or happen across dogs seemingly walking themselves. We assure you they’re not. That’s just Ricky. Dying doesn’t mean he stopped loving dogs.
MYSTERY PAYPHONES
When was the last time you remember seeing an operational payphone? In Deadwater you can find them all over the place; booths popping up seemingly overnight and then disappearing again a few months later. These payphones are claimed to be owned by a company called Frontier Communications, or just Frontier for short. But on paper there is no such company in existence. If that isn’t mysterious enough, sometimes these payphones will start ringing on their own until a curious passerby picks up. People have reported hearing a range of things: static noise, random sequence of numbers, recited vintage recipes, other strange recordings, breathing, and dead silence.
NIGHT WHISTLING
Some cultures warn you not to whistle at night because you might just hear a disembodied whistle back. Here in Deadwater, however, you can hear that disembodied whistle whether you want to or not. But don’t worry. It’s usually harmless as long as you don’t look behind you. Keep walking all the way home and you’ll be totally fine.
SENTIENT CLOUDS?
Have you looked up at the sky recently? If you stare long enough you might catch something truly peculiar. Specifically, you might notice a few clouds that move a little too willfully. Don’t try to bring this up to the town sheriff, or any city official for that matter. They’ll only brush you off.
SINGING PALMS
There’s howling wind and then there’s this. On particularly windy days, the desert palms lining our suburban streets of Lowlands will rock and sway as if dancing. Then they begin to sing. No one has been able to identify the melody they sing as of yet, but it’s mostly pleasant if not entirely bewitching. Try not to stand around idly when you hear them singing. You might get hypnotized by their song.
UNUSUAL WEATHER PHENOMENON
Raining frogs in the springtime? Sudden electrical storm during the peak of summer? Thick fog that refuses to dissipate for an entire month? That’s just another day in the life in Deadwater. Odd weather, while not necessarily a common occurrence, happens often enough throughout the year that the locals just laugh it off as one of the quirks of living in this town. It’s best to keep clothing options for all seasons in the wardrobe, just in case. We’re still waiting for spaghetti to fall out of the sky though.

New Fiction 2024 - January
"Osee" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
I can't go back to check what Osee was on about. All you need to know about this phase of the bible is guys were prophesying, and pretty much every prophecy is about how the Hebrew people were fuckin' it up. This all feels like items in what should have been the appendix, but since I'm reading a Catholic bible it's all just filler until JC shows up. (And we're just under 70% after two solid years of gettin' through it.)
"Joel" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
Another dull prophet.
This Gray Spirit by Heather Jarman (2002)
I want to love every DS9 book. It's a struggle to not enjoy them. But there's a trend here in the Mission Gamma series of trying to do Too Much. The last book was very long, but also very focused, and the premise of taking the Defiant out into the Gamma quadrant sounds fine until they do it again... and again... and again. And it gets to the point where I just don't care what they're doing. I want DS9--the setting--and its beloved cast of characters to do their thing there. I'll read on but this one really should have been two books instead of this A plot-B plot structure.
Divided We Fall by John J. Ordover, David Mack, Andrew Currie, Michael Collins, Richard Bennett, David Roach, John Nyberg, Jenna Garcia, WildStorm FX, Alex Sinclair, Jeff Mariotte (2001)
This one contrasted nicely against Revenant by Alex White. Both stories focus on Dax and how the Trill symbiont managers are real bad at transparency. The more I learn about this world, the more it sounds like a pretty clear caste system that should get them booted from the Federation. But then, I suffer the flaw of binary judgement, and there's probably some nuance there to consider.
Gargoyles the Movie Game dev. Buena Vista Home Video (1995)
Wow, this was the most broken version of Chutes and Ladders I've ever played. I recommend a house rule of doubling each number on the spinner if you want any chance at winning. The event cards are just so punishing and the strict time limit makes it a steep uphill battle.
Gargoyles Remastered dev. Walt Disney Computer Software & Empty Clip Studios (1995, 2023)
I had a problem with input lag in the original version that ruined my initial impression, but that was on me. Playing the remaster with no input lag and the extra features like updated art, music, and the rewind all added up to a more enjoyable, if short, experience. It's otherwise an interesting artifact from that transition out of 2D platformers and into chunky polygons and pre-rendered 3D visuals.
Gargoyles: Night Flight dev. Tiger Electronics (1995)
I've played a few of these mid-90s Tiger handhelds and it's fine for a car ride, which is where I always imagine these things were played at the time. It's so overly simple that I can't say it's worth playing, unlike the classic Game & Watch titles that had real challenge and replayability to them.
The Color Purple dir. Bazawule (2023)
I never caught the original movie or book, but this musical was great. And those events are some real fucked up trauma.
The Iron Claw dir. Sean Durkin (2023)
As period biopics go, this one's fine. Not too wild or revelatory, other than its highlighting a segment of the wrestling scene which I had no idea about. The performances were all solid and Ephron clearly committed to the role. The story is from that period of simpler costumes and narratives before my friends and I came aboard in the later 80s and 90s, so it was neat to understand a fictionalized buildup to the more familiar stories.
Poor Things dir. Yorgos Lanthimos (2023)
It was great, stylized, and I suppose does have an act structure but it feels a little loose with it, which I'm all for. It just doesn't match up to the amazing work in The Favorite.
Night Swim dir. Bryce McGuire (2024)
A snoozer, I'm afraid. The seed of it is interesting but it doesn't quite grow enough to make it compelling.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom dir. James Wan (2023)
Another snoozer. It's not as fun as the first one, and if these superhero things aren't fun then what're we doing here?
The Beekeeper dir. David Ayer (2024)
Yeah this was a rough stretch. Another action snoozer that maybe could have highlighted something interesting about exploitation of elders but just uses that as an excuse for Statham to go around punching dudes in a boring way.
I.S.S. dir. Gabriela Cowperthwaite (2023)
There's this particular subgenre of space movie where people are just out there in their tin cans, then they're stuck or screwed, and the drama plays out amid a desperate race to get out of that sitch. Hell, I will myself to sleep by conjuring a little scene I've developed where I'm out in my little space tug boat and need to shut down systems and go to sleep for the cycle. Gravity, Interstellar, and Life are all recent examples of this kind of movie that come to mind, and now we can add I.S.S. to that list. And I love these. I love space trouble. I ran into a bunch of these stories in my recent watch of The Outer Limits (1995), and I really can't get enough. I.S.S. has this uncomfortable angle on what if Earth annihilates itself, huh, smart guy? (Art reflecting reality, etc.) And that's a bummer to consider. But the story that plays out onboard the station is still neat and I would definitely watch this again.
Mean Girls dir. Samantha Jayne & Arturo Perez Jr. (2024)
Dug it! Maybe more than I did the original. Mostly because the musical sequences are great.
American Fiction dir. Cord Jefferson (2024)
Stories about writers can be a little too navel-gazey for me to handle, but I'm glad I caught this.
The Book of Clarence dir. Jeymes Samuel (2024)
It comes from the angle of true belief, so you have to buy into that going in, but the questions it raises and the general production all make it worth the watch. Plus, they tackle the question of why even is Jesus a white guy (well, we know why), so that makes it extra fun.
Battlestar Galactica - "Saga of a Star World" (1978)
Doofy? That's the word. Definitely of its time, but I'm gonna get through it all later this year.
The Twilight Zone - "Shatterday" (1985)
Ey Bruce Willis being moody before that was his brand. I watched the 60s version and now I feel obligated to see what issues of the day were popping up for 80s TV people.
Stargate SG-1 - "Children of the Gods" (1997)
Oh, okay, I didn't realize they were angling for the Showtime adult crowd with this. I was so used to the sanitized Saturday afternoon syndication version of the episodes. In any case, still a good start. Another show to watch in full later on.
Farscape - "Premiere" (1999)
Hm, more white guys as leads/captains isn't as appealing, but the puppety goodness of Henson aliens compels me to continue.
Fringe - "Pilot" (2008)
Holy shit, those first five minutes! I knew immediately I'd enjoy this show, whatever it's going to be. I heard enough good things that I figured I gotta.
Yellowstone - "Daybreak" (2018)
My mom wouldn't stop talking about this show so now I'll have to see what's what. So far it's Kevin Costner as an old asshole who raised his kids to also be assholes?

Pirati dei Caraibi "La Maledizione della Prima Luna" - trailer ita

EVGENIJ PRIGOZIN AVEVA L' ANULARE SINISTRO MOZZATO, DOVE DI SOLITO SI METTE LA FEDE MATRIMONIALE
La maledizione della prima luna, FAMOSISSIMO FILM DI DEPP, VEDE IL PROTAGONISTA (JACK SPARROW . in italiano GIACOMO PASSERO, COME IL CANARINO UCCISO DAL MIO CUGINO ROBERTO)CHE E' ALLA RICERCA DELLA PERLA NERA E UN BEL MEDAGLIONE CON UN TESCHIO AL CENTRO, MALEDETTO COME GLI UOMINI CHE LO PORTAVANO

Sonic and Inspector Gadget Met!
At the 1993 Video Software Dealers Association convention, it was announced that DiC had made a deal with Buena Vista Home Video to put many of their cartoons on VHS for the first time, including Sonic SatAM.
Both a Sonic and Inspector Gadget mascot costume appeared, who stood alongside Bill Mechanic, president of International Theatrical Worldwide Video for the Walt Disney Corporation, and Andy Heyward, then president of DiC!
Surprisingly, this wasn't the only time Sonic and Inspector Gadget crossed over. Find out more in the upcoming book!

Disney logo minutiae mystery time... Because that's just what I sometimes do:
YouTuber Cassavetesforaday recently uploaded the opening seconds of a 35mm (!!) print of THE JUNGLE BOOK, from its 1978 theatrical re-release. Complete with a blue MPAA rating card that preceded the opening credits in theaters...
youtube
Soooo... What's the mystery here?
Well, depending on which home video edition of THE JUNGLE BOOK you have... That's not the correct Buena Vista title card.
That card is the standard blue gradient one that Disney used for several films up until late 1966, though it did make occasional appearances on random films and titles afterwards, such as THE LOVE BUG (1968) and THE BOATNIKS (1970).
The 2007 DVD of THE JUNGLE BOOK, and the 2014 release, all subsequent prints... Open with the 1966-1979 standard BV card.
youtube
The font for "Distributed By" and "Distribution Co., Inc." are a serif font in the later logo, as opposed to the more loose-looking sans-serif letterforms of the pre-1966 logo. That's the easy way you can tell the difference between that logo and the pre-1966 one. The 1966-1979 logo is also often brighter-looking and more greenish/turquoise-y.
(Side note: Disney did use the 1966-79 logo one last time after 1979, for THE FOX AND THE HOUND in 1981. I guess to keep it consistent with the other then-recent animated films? RESCUERS was the previous film in the line-up, released in 1977.)
This 1966-79 logo actually appears on the demo VHS of the film's 1991 home video release - the first ever video release of the movie. The actual 1991 VHS release, the 1992 LaserDisc, and the 1997 VHS and LaserDisc don't have any BV logo whatsoever.
The 1999 DVD uses the BV that you see in the film print... It is the only home video release of the film, at least in the West, to do so.
But because the lighter serif font logo was on the 1991 demo VHS, I always assumed that the 1999 DVD release made a flub by using the pre-'66 BV card... Thus the later releases of the film use the one present on the demo VHS...
I guess not?
The only way I myself could tell is if I time traveled and caught THE JUNGLE BOOK in theaters in October 1967. That was, of course, almost a year after Disney began using the serif BV card. That first appeared on a live-action film of theirs called FOLLOW ME, BOYS! That was released in December 1966. Mere days before Walt's passing, may I add.
Some of the other 1967 Disney films... MONKEYS, GO HOME! and CHARLIE THE LONESOME COUGAR (JUNGLE BOOK's double-bill picture) use the 1966-79 logo. The outliers are THE ADVENTURES OF BULLWHIP GRIFFIN, which uses a custom stylized BV card, THE GNOME-MOBILE, and THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE...
By 1968-69, most of the films and even some re-issues of older RKO-era titles used the then-new distributor card.
And it's fascinating to me that it's kind of unclear now what logo the original 1967 release print of THE JUNGLE BOOK actually used.
Maybe two prints with different logos were somehow created, one w/ a pre-1966 BV and another w/ a 1966-79 BV... Or one of the re-issues swapped logos... Usually that's not a thing with classic Disney films that were released between 1954 and 1979. (One exception I can think of off the top of my head is BLACKBEARD'S GHOST, whose video releases up until 2016 often used the 1979-84 BV card, despite being a 1968 movie w/ only one U.S. re-issue prior to that logo being created.)
And certainly not one of the animated features, for that matter. Maybe JUNGLE BOOK's closeness to the introduction of the then-new serif BV logo is why that may be? Maybe the serif BV was actually from an international print that somehow made its way onto a demo VHS and all the current home video editions?
The film print Cassavetesforaday uploaded would seem to indicate that the 1991 demo tape and the 2007/2014 disc releases were a plaster job, and that THE JUNGLE BOOK originally opened w/ the pre-1966 card. Maybe!
Who knows! But now I have this information, and I did something with it lol.

Send a Letter for The Owl House!
As Dana Terrace herself suggested, if you want to see change; A good idea is to send a physical letter to Disney! You can ask for The Owl House to have its third season extended (with a reminder that you’re willing to wait an extra amount of time for this), and/or additional content past the initial intended run- Dana said she was down for producing more stuff for The Owl House! I think it helps to mention that you’re a customer with money who’s more than willing to pay for more content, as well as merchandise.
Sending a letter is easy, and here’s my explanation based on my own understanding, although it also helps to search up a video or two online, just to be safe. I found this video to be helpful;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNg-snqkguc
You’re going to need an envelope, a pen, the physical letter itself, as well as a postage stamp, and finally a mailbox! If you don’t have a mailbox, you can always head to your local post office to drop off the letter.
Personally, I typed and printed my letter out to make it seem more formal, but I think hand-written also works. Google docs has a decent letter format/template to work from, and again, you can always search up how to write the letter itself online. Once you’ve finished the letter, place it within the envelope, and seal the envelope by dampening the waxy inside of the flap.
On the blank side of the envelope, it’s important to write (in PEN!) the address you’re sending to in the middle. DisneyTVA’s address is as follows;
DisneyTVA
811 Sonora Avenue
Glendale, CA
91201, US
I also found this other mailing address online that could help;
Disney-ABC Home Entertainment and Television Distribution
500 S. Buena Vista St.
FGW #3052
Burbank, CA 91521-3515
If you have the budget, I’d recommend sending letters to both addresses!
On the top-left, place your own address, in case the letter needs to be sent back to you due to an error;
First, Last Name
Street Number and Address
City, State Initials
Zip Code
So for example, the return address on the top left may look as follows;
Robert Williams
3445 Chestnut Avenue
Happyfield, MA
89051
And on the top right, you need to add a postage stamp! If you don’t have any, you can buy them at your local post office, or online; Again, I recommend searching this up, because I am admittedly not an expert. Apply the postage stamp to the top right, and you should be good to go! And of course, don’t forget that your letter is inside to begin with.
From there, you can either drop off the letter at your local post office, OR you can place it within your mailbox! To make sure the letter gets sent, flip up the red thing on the side of the mailbox; This will tell the mailman to deliver the contents inside of the mailbox! If you don’t flip up the red thing, the mailman won’t deliver your letter!
Here’s an example of my own, the return address of course censored;
From there, I heard that it helps to go on Twitter or tweet a photo of your letter (with the return address censored of course), as well as the hashtag; #OwlHouseMemos
Hopefully if the fandom sends enough letters demanding change from Disney, they’ll listen! Fan outcry managed to change the Sonic movie’s CGI model for its protagonist, which in turn led to the film being received well! If there’s enough demand, change IS possible- And it doesn’t hurt to try!
