StARS Symposium Presentation
With the pictures I've made for my astrophotography class, I presented a poster at Bridgewater State University's StARS (Student Arts and Research Symposium) event. The experience in making the poster itself was mainly copy and paste and formatting. The actual presentation part was stressful but I ultimately enjoyed it in the end. I took this opportunity as an excuse to break out a blazer I have not worn in a long time and get a haircut to look my best. I spoke to a lot of lovely people about my project, but my biggest regret is not researching more in depth about the figures I pictured. I could speak for ages about the process of making the images, but my presentation was hindered on my lack of astronomy knowledge. However, regardless of such, I was still able to make good conversation with those interested and I even spoke to other students who were presenting about what their projects were. This event brought out confidence in me that I hadn't experienced in a while and I'm glad I went the extra mile to dress and play the part.
After the presentation, I commuted home to visit my parents and show them my new look and the poster. My mother, not exactly supportive of my majoring in film, was excited to see me passionate about something like astronomy. I think the ironic part is that the skills I've gained in cinematography, editing and composition throughout the years actually helped me make these pictures the best they could be. I've been properly inspired to consider taking on more photography in the future. So to conclude this blog (probably), I pose the question to myself of whether or not I will continue with astrophotography. It depends on circumstance and budget. I have a camera and a telescope I could potentially use but I need a way to mount the camera on the telescope. Also, if I were to continue, I would want to do it somewhere clearer than the skies I live with. When I was younger, I used to be able to point out constellations every night due to my Cub Scout knowledge, but now I almost never see a sky bright enough to see stars. When I drive at night, I sometimes pull over to take pictures of a bright full moon, so I think I’ll continue to dabble as time goes on.

Need some input on a Telescope for some Amateur Astrophotography.
Tried getting an answer from Reddit, as they traditionally have better response time, but who had multiple telescope snobs sneering at me for asking if 200mm extra telescope length worth of magnification is worth the extra 50 dollars, or if I should stick to the 500mm length, as both had a 90mm aperture lens, meanwhile the guy just ripped me apart claiming that the 2 I shared were actually kid telescopes but like... not at all??? Kid telescopes are like 50usd for higher quality kid scopes, but I just wanted a cheaper one to start some amateur astrophotography, on a budget and was looking at a 200 dollar scope that had a 50 dollar off coupon, and a 130 dollar telescope with a 30 dollar off coupon courtesy of Amazon Prime Student, both from amazon So I turn to you lovely folk of Tumblr who are historically slightly more autistic and willing to share about your hobbies instead of being a gatekeeping snob; Is the 700mm length scope worth 50 dollars more than the 500mm scope or is the magnification going to be too similar to notice for the most part.

"Understanding Telescope Features: What to Look For"...
When choosing a telescope, it's essential to understand various features to make an informed decision. Here are key aspects to consider:
1. Type of Telescope
Refractor Telescopes: Use lenses to gather and focus light. Great for planetary and lunar observations but can be more expensive for larger sizes.
Reflector Telescopes: Use mirrors to gather light. Typically provide more aperture for the cost and are excellent for deep-sky objects.
Catadioptric Telescopes (Compound): Combine lenses and mirrors to correct optical aberrations. They offer versatility and are generally compact.
2. Aperture
The diameter of the primary mirror or lens, which determines how much light the telescope can gather. A larger aperture allows for better resolution and the ability to see fainter objects. Common sizes range from 60mm (2.4 inches) for small refractors to 300mm (12 inches) for larger reflectors.
3. Focal Length and Focal Ratio
Focal Length: The distance from the lens or mirror to the point where the image is formed. Longer focal lengths are good for detailed views of planets, while shorter focal lengths are better for wide-field views.
Focal Ratio (f/ratio): The ratio of the focal length to the aperture. A lower f/ratio (e.g., f/5) indicates a wider field of view and faster imaging, while a higher f/ratio (e.g., f/10) provides more magnification and detail.
4. Mount Type
Altitude-Azimuth (up-down, left-right): Simple and intuitive, good for beginners. However, it can be less effective for tracking celestial objects.
Equatorial: Designed to track the rotation of the Earth, making it easier to follow objects across the sky. It requires some learning but is more suitable for astrophotography.
5. Optical Quality
Check the quality of the lenses or mirrors. Better optics will provide clearer, sharper images. Look for telescopes with high-quality glass and coatings.
6. Finderscope
A small auxiliary telescope mounted on the main telescope. It helps locate objects before you zoom in. Some finderscopes use a simple crosshair, while others have illuminated reticles or red-dot sights.
7. Accessories
Eyepieces: Different eyepieces provide various magnifications. Consider a set of interchangeable eyepieces for versatility.
Barlow Lens: Doubles the magnification of any eyepiece used with it.
Filters: Useful for observing specific wavelengths of light, such as planetary filters to enhance features or light pollution filters to improve contrast.
8. Portability and Storage
Consider how easy it is to transport and store the telescope. Larger telescopes offer better performance but are bulkier and require more setup space.
9. Build Quality and Durability
Look for a telescope with a solid construction, especially if you plan to use it frequently. The material and build quality can affect the stability and longevity of the instrument.
10. Price and Value
Determine your budget and find the best telescope that fits within it while meeting your needs. Sometimes spending a bit more can significantly enhance the quality and experience.
Understanding these features will help you select a telescope that best matches your interests and observing goals. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced astronomer, knowing what to look for will lead you to a more satisfying and enjoyable stargazing experience.
When looking for a handy telescope, it’s important to balance portability, ease of use, and optical quality. Here are a few recommendations based on different needs:
Celestron Astromaster 70AZ: This is a popular choice for beginners. It’s lightweight, portable, and easy to set up, with a 70mm aperture that provides clear images of the Moon, planets, and some deep-sky objects.
Sky-Watcher Dobsonian 8": If you're willing to invest a bit more and want something with great optical performance, this Dobsonian telescope is easy to transport and set up. The 8-inch aperture allows for excellent views of deep-sky objects and planets.
Vortex Optics Razer HD Spotting Scope: While technically not a telescope, this spotting scope is highly portable and provides impressive image quality, making it a versatile option for both terrestrial and astronomical viewing.
Orion StarBlast 4.5 Astro: This is a compact, table-top telescope that’s great for beginners. It offers a 4.5-inch aperture and is easy to carry around, making it a good option for quick stargazing sessions.
Meade Instruments Infinity 70mm AZ Telescope: Another good option for beginners, this telescope is affordable, easy to use, and provides good views of the Moon and planets.
If you’re looking for something very portable and user-friendly, consider a smaller refractor telescope or a compact reflector, and ensure it comes with a sturdy case or bag for easy transport.

Types of Camera Lenses: A Complete Guide
The world of photography is filled with fantastic tools, and the lens is arguably the most crucial one. It's the gateway through which light reaches your camera's sensor, shaping the final image. But with so many varieties available, choosing the right lens can be daunting. Fear not, photography enthusiasts! This comprehensive guide will break down the different types of camera lenses and their uses.
The Two Main Categories: Prime vs. Zoom
Prime Lenses: These lenses offer a fixed focal length, meaning you can't zoom in or out. However, they come with several advantages:
Sharper Images: Prime lenses typically produce sharper, higher-quality images because their design is simpler.
Faster Apertures: Prime lenses often boast wider maximum apertures, allowing more light to enter for beautiful low-light photography and shallow depth of field effects (blurred backgrounds).
Lighter and More Compact: Their fixed focal length makes them smaller and lighter, ideal for travel and everyday use.
Zoom Lenses: These versatile lenses provide a range of focal lengths, allowing you to zoom in and out for greater compositional flexibility. They're perfect for situations where you need to capture various elements from wide landscapes to distant subjects. However, zoom lenses generally:
Offer slower apertures compared to prime lenses at similar focal lengths.
May produce slightly less sharp images due to their complex design.
Tend to be heavier and bulkier.
Diving Deeper: Focal Length and Specialty Lenses
Focal length is the distance between the lens's optical center and the image sensor. It significantly impacts the field of view (how much of the scene is captured) and the perspective of your image. Here's a breakdown of common focal length categories and their applications:
Wide-Angle Lenses (14mm-35mm): Capture expansive scenes, ideal for landscapes, architecture, and astrophotography.
Standard Lenses (35mm-85mm): Replicate the natural perspective of the human eye, great for everyday photography, portraits, and street photography.
Telephoto Lenses (85mm and above): Bring distant subjects closer, perfect for wildlife, sports photography, and portraits with a compressed background effect.
Beyond Basics: Specialty Lenses for Specific Needs
Macro Lenses: Designed for extreme close-up shots, revealing intricate details in flowers, insects, and tiny objects.
Fisheye Lenses: Capture a super-wide, distorted field of view for creative effects.
Tilt-Shift Lenses: Create a miniature effect by selectively blurring parts of the image, often used for architectural photography.
Choosing the Right Lens for You
The best lens depends on your photography style and budget. Here are some tips:
Beginners: Consider a versatile zoom lens to explore different focal lengths.
Landscape Photographers: Look for wide-angle lenses to capture vast scenes.
Portrait Photographers: Prime lenses with wider apertures are great for beautiful bokeh (background blur) and low-light portraits.
Remember, the lens is your creative partner. Experiment, explore different types, and discover the ones that help you achieve your photographic vision!

Google Continues its Mid-range Dominance with the Pixel 7a
The mid-range smartphone market is in a never-ending state of competition - you have a ton of brands and manufacturers each offering their own budget-friendly handsets, although these sometimes come with some compromises in terms of performance, camera, or build quality. With that in mind, Google has constantly tried its hand with mid-range Android phones, gaining relative success with the likes of the Pixel 3a, 4a, and last year's Pixel 6a. While it's not perfect, Google's new Pixel 7a aims to provide users with some compelling features to make their purchase worthwhile. Priced at £449 for buyers in the UK, the 7a features some notable upgrades from its predecessor, and brings it closer (in terms of specifications, at least) to the base-model Pixel 7, which was launched last year. One thing that stands out the most with the new A-model is that it borrows a lot of design aesthetics from the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, such as the new metallic camera bar that replaces the all-black visor from the Pixel 6a. The phone also drops the thin plastic frame between the display and aluminium side rails, instead opting for a cleaner design around the frame of the phone. There's Gorilla Glass 3 protection on the front, while the rest of the rear panel features a plastic design, not unlike the one found on the 6a. The Pixel 7a also comes in four different colour variants this year, including your standard black and white versions, with the addition of new "Sea" and "Coral" colours, the latter of which is available exclusively on Google's online store. The display has received a slight performance boost this year - while it retains a compact 6.1-inch size like the 6a, the 7a's OLED panel now features a 90Hz refresh rate, which will make for a smoother user experience. It's something that fans have been clamouring for, especially given that competing devices from brands like Xiaomi feature high refresh rates at much lower prices. It also houses an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometrics. Inside the phone is Google's Tensor G2 chip, paired with the company's Titan M2 chip for protection. This is backed by 8GB of RAM - another boost for performance - and 128GB of internal storage. The phone comes with a moderately-sized 4385 mAh battery, although it charges at a pretty slow 18W speed. One advantage though is that the phone will now support wireless charging, but again, don't expect stellar charging speeds. As with every Pixel phone, the highlight of the 7a is the camera setup, which now comes with a 64MP main lens with ƒ/1.89 aperture, paired with a 13 MP ultrawide camera with ƒ/2.2 aperture. The Pixel 7a will come with a lot of the camera features found on the flagship 7 series, including Astrophotography, Portrait mode, Real tone, and photo Unblur to name a few. Meanwhile, users can record video on the main camera with up to 4K resolution and either 60 or 30fps. Selfies and video calls are handled by a 13MP camera on the front display, which also doubles for Face unlock functionality. The Pixel 7a is available now for £449, with a free bundle of Pixel Buds A-series. Read the full article

best telescope to buy
The best telescope to buy depends on your level of experience, budget, and specific needs. Here are some factors to consider: Aperture: The size of the lens or mirror, which determines how much light the telescope can gather. A larger aperture means better image quality. Focal length: The distance from the lens or mirror to the eyepiece, which determines the magnification of the telescope. Mount: There are two main types of mounts, altazimuth and equatorial. An equatorial mount is better for astrophotography, while an altazimuth mount is easier to use. Type of telescope: There are three main types of telescopes - refractor, reflector, and compound. Each has its pros and cons, so research which one is best for your needs.
