10 year homestead wishlist :
A different home haha, my “own place” where I can make it pretty and I know my brother or his horde of children won’t destroy it.
Raised garden beds with drip water lines, while im just shooting for the moon here haha.
Welsh Harlequin Ducks! They’re a cool heritage breed, fairly rare, good foragers and nice dispositions, plus they’re really good layers and apparently they’re easier to pluck for meat? Cuz their feathers are light colored? Idk
White Holland Turkey flock! I’m 4 birds in, just need to raise them and then buy more next year and breed them and get a good breed standard flock going. They’re also a pretty rare heritage breed. BEAUTIFUL birds for sure. Really sweet too.
Big herd of dairy goats and makin soap and cheese and stuff: I’m loving these mini alpines and once they’re in milk and I have a better idea of how I like their milk, it’d be a good breed to lean into. Also fairly uncommon! that’s important in areas that are more rural where there’s a lot of competition.
Annnddddd maybe!! ....
Scottish Highland cattle! I don’t want milk cows cuz I’m lactose intolerant and can’t drink cows milk. But I wouldn’t mind eventually (if I have the land and I don’t rn) raising a handful of meat cows every year to sell and for my huge very carnivorous family. They’re largely not conscientious consumers, to put it lightly. So if I want to help lower their carbon footprint the best option is to try and raise food for them myself. And this breed of cattle is SOO COOL. plus, again, pretty rare! They’re considered a specialty meat and sell at really good rates. And they’re good foragers and hardy hardy creatures. AND if I ever did want to raise one for milk, their milk fat content is super ideal for making cream and butter, the only kind of cow dairy I consume.
But a lot of this is far off haha. Next year is ducks and more turkeys. Cows are a pipe dream, but I have my breed picked out. Ideally I’ll have some kids with my goats and keep them and once I have a good collection of females I’ll Eventually get a buck or two. But rn with only two does and one too young still to breed, a live in buck doesn’t make much sense.
