Soms ga je op Broadway op bezoek bij een voorstelling van collega/vrienden/studiegenoten. En wordt je gevraagd om een paar dagen later mee te doen.

Het is officieel: ik heb op Broadway gestaan in het theater van de Stella Adler Studio waar binnen enkele maanden een andere LUCA-studente start aan de opleiding.

Emma, die bij de Atlantic Theater Company studeert komt die avond langs en stuurt me achteraf enkele foto's.

The Kimmi and Jackie Show

When you live right in the middle of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, you have the world of entertainment at your fingertips. Just a few miles away sits Downtown Orlando, home of various night clubs, the Orlando Eye, and an indoor sports arena. Even if you just want a small night out with friends, college program housing sits a block away from the Crossroads, which feels like a mini-neighborhood of restaurants. There’s so much to do during your college program and yet sometimes, you just need to sit inside a fort with hot chocolate and watch a movie with your best friend.

During my college program, my bucketlist became less about the things in the parks I needed to see or do and more about the things I needed to do with the people I was there with. The college program is a little weird in the sense that all of these people come from all over the world, become your family for six months, and then all go back home. I’m sure that’s how many study abroad experiences are. As the internship came to a close, I realized there was so much that I wanted to do with my best friend that had nothing to do with the college program. There were movies we needed to see, gingerbread houses to build, and random adventures to go on. 

One night in November, Jackie and I created a list of things we wanted to do together. From seeing an east coast sunrise on the beach to watching movies together, we had quite a bit of things to accomplish before the end of December. Jackie kept this list on her phone and named the list The Kimmi and Jackie Show. 

One of the things on the list was to build a fort. One of the movies on our list was Rent, because Jackie hadn’t ever seen it. So, instead of spending our night doing things we could only do in Florida, we spent our night creating a fort out of very limited supplies. 

People tend to pack light when they go to the college program because they often have to fly to Florida. Bulky things like blankets and pillows tend to stay home, so we didn’t have much to work with. Out of the few blankets and towels Jackie had, we made a tiny corner fort. We pulled the couch cushions off the couch so we could sit on them inside the fort, and draped the blankets over the backs of dining room chairs. The hardest part was getting any height to the fort. Eventually, everything was secure and we were able to crawl inside for a movie.

It was so important to me to spend those little moments with the people I cared about on my program because we were all about to go our different ways. I honestly didn’t know when I’d see these people again or if I’d ever see them again. Traveling was always a financial burden to me so the idea of having a reunion at Walt Disney World seemed like a far off dream. Even then, I knew that whatever reunion we had wouldn’t be the same as the life we were living right then. The Kimmi and Jackie Show list didn’t even come close to being finished, but that didn’t end up mattering after we started to date.

Hanging out in a blanket fort with hot chocolate and Rent though was a pretty fantastic way to kick it off.

So last week on our holidays in Tenby I crossed several things off my bucket list… this was one of them! Meet Steve the llama. I bought Steve because for years I’ve wanted a giant inflatable to chill on in the sea or pool… and o realised there was absolutely nothing stopping me achieving that dream! He was not cheap, but he was fun! Minor roadblocks included not buying a pump, and my hospice care ass not being able to contribute much to blowing him up… so fair okay to Emma, who hated me at that moment (see video evidence 😂) sue blew him up manually! We also then had to share our room with a giant llama 😂 which was pretty funny when I was drunk that night tbh 😂👍🏻. The next challenge was realising we actually had to get Steve out of the hotel 🙈 picture that “pivot” scene with the sofa from Friends! But we made it put the door! We then made the long walk down to the beach… people we’re actually watching and cheering us along by this point ffs 😂. But we made it! I got to tick this ridiculous, fun things off my bucket list! I couldn’t have done it without Emma being so amazing 🥰 especially when she wasn’t even keen on trying Steve; she was worried she’d float out to Cauldy island 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 This is your reminder; bucket list items don’t have to be big or expensive to be important… if you’ve always wanted to do the things, and it makes you happy?
