Just got to Kelowna for some R&R, but this walk along the Cottonwoods Trail in Dinosaur Provincial Park Unesco World Heritage Site has me like 😍 Did you know the trail is a floodplain? Did you know that the Brooks Aqueducts are part of the EID (Eastern Irrigation District)? The EID is one of thirteen in southern Alberta, and provides water to around 300,000 acres of irrigated farmlands!! The Aqueducts themselves were intended to irrigate a section of southeast Alberta, and did so for about 30 years! They were built by the Canadian Pacific Railway company, and in the late 1960's, an idea was tossed around to rebuild the structure. That thought was unfortunately shut down. Now we have a canal running alongside it, which provides not only water throughout the County of Newell surrounding Brooks, but also a place where people run their dogs in a BEAUTIFUL surrounding without disturbing the historic site. These giant structures are slowly deteriorating, but they're doing it with such grandeur. Dinosaur Provincial Park has self-guided trails for different capability levels. For example, my Mom, seen in the green shirt, has had both knees AND her right hip replaced, and she was able to hike around the Badlands Trail easily. I've been a little MIA for the past couple days, but that's because my family from BC have been visiting since Saturday. Yesterday was my Mom's birthday, and in lieu of that and Father's Day, we went out to Dinosaur Provincial Park for some much needed family hiking. Going out to the park is always a bonding experience for us (though the boys weren't so keen on us stopping every so often to take photos!! 😂). We get to share experiences we wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to encounter. Along the Badlands Trail, for example, you get to witness a ton of different things! Great views, a variety of flora AND fauna, and moments spent together. Isn't that a great way to spend any holiday?
