I had a realization kind of like this due to somebody shittalking me in rainbow six siege the other day. I've been playing that game since it came out (with a couple long breaks) so I'm almost account level 300, which is a big number, which would normally indicate that you've been playing for a really long time ergo you're pretty good at the game. I'm not very good at the game; my usual strategy is to either hang out in the bombsite and hold an angle as a defender or to just go with the guy with the bomb and watch his back as an attacker. If you told me to go do something useful by myself, like break ceilings as sledge or flank as nokk or whatever i couldn't do it and i'd be really uncomfortable doing it.
I usually play with voice chat and text chat turned off but sometimes I turn them on, just to hear callouts, and this one game we did very poorly (I also did pretty poorly just like individually; I got probably two kills in the entire game, and I always play random operators so I was playing like tachanka and I think buck every single round) and at the end of the game one guy decided it was my fault we lost and just laid into me and called me all kinds of names and made fun of how bad i was with an account level that high.
It didn't bother me of course because who cares but it did make me think, 'why am i so bad even though i've been playing so long?'
I grew up playing hours upon hours of team fortress classic and later when they came out fortress forever and team fortress 2. And what I did in those games, for hours and hours, was ignore my team, run directly to the objective, try and kill everybody who got in my way, and try and capture the objective. I didn't care if I died cause I'd just respawn. It was really kind of a zen experience cause I was basically doing the same thing over and over and I usually had loud music blasting while I was playing and I mean if you're playing scout in tfc or ff you basically have to be willing to repeat yourself a million times to try and touch the flag even once. I was able to enter this state where I didn't even have any conscious thoughts, I was just going through and playing the game doing the exact same thing every round, the only thing I cared about was the objective and that was it.
I realized that I did that so much that the only reason I still play video games is so I can get back into that zen state where I'm not thinking about anything. I've essentially been training myself for 15+ years to be bad at video games, cause if you aren't thinking or applying any kind of knowledge to what you're doing, you're never going to learn or grow as a player, you're never going to get good at any game if that's all your doing.
anyway the point is i'm fine with that.
being a fucking casual is a skill that takes years of honing

thank you so much for you guys’ feedback on my oc Braise. Loved the comments! Here’s her biography. Always feel free to ask me questions about her, there’s nothing I’d love more than to answer them.
Tumblr media
Braise’s biography~
"You’re either on my side or in my way."
BACKGROUND
Operator Luna "Braise" Ursi is born in France where she lived for three years before immigrating to Quebec, Canada. There, she developed skills in French and English due to her location which benefited her throughout her social and professional life. She comes form a hardworking family and she knew quite young what she wanted to do; sacrificing herself to help those in need. At 16 she enlisted in the Canadian armed forces (CAF) as an armored officer. That will mark the beginning of her multiples changes.
Later, Luna did one year in the Royal military college before realizing it may not be the right fit for her, she soon changed to the federal police of Canada (RCMP), succeeding in every part of the job including weapons’ training and rapid response situations. She did four years before being able to supervise the newcomers and then got approached by the emergency response team (ERT). There, she served one year. One year where she got deployed all over Canada helping citizens and participating in high danger classified operations. During a joint operation with the JTF2, she met agent Sebastien "Buck" Côté who later introduced her to Rainbow.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
When I first read Luna’s dossier I thought Côté wasn’t thinking straight. She had way too much expectations on what she could achieve and about the person she would become, but maybe that’s what made her such a good fit for team Rainbow. She would not back down. She was reckless, tireless, rigorous and independent. These qualities interested me, and were a mix I had wished to see on the battlefield for a long time now.
At first, I started to learn about her personal life. She lived with a quite modern family. There didn’t seem to be any problems at first but, as I dug deeper, I realized Ursi had suffered this oldest sibling syndrome. She felt a lot of pressure on her shoulders but managed to control it before she find an opportunity to work on it with the federal police. My several psychological interviews with agent Braise confirmed her immense feeling of pressure when it came to success. A mix of immense guilt and pressure of doing what is right. She had failed to achieve her goals in the army which pushed her into not doing any mistakes again that could make her feel so miserable. Failure is her biggest enemy.
Luna would seem harsh at first but she is liked in the unit by others and seems to have small issues with few of our agents. After some time she quickly grew found of our French and Canadian agents where she seemed to find her place with most of them. Of course, her strong sense of hate towards injustice made her more friendly with Aria "Alibi" De Luca which she described, as my biggest surprise, like a sort of canalisation for her anger. I’m also looking forward to seeing her work with agents Mark "Mute" Chandar as her defensive partner and Jordan "Thermite" Trace during her mentoring time with the agency. They are two strong headed men, who I hope will vandalize their anger and frustration into Luna’s strategic and open mind.
— Dr. Harishva "Harry" Pandey, Director of Rainbow
@poisonedtruth would love to help you with an icon! Feel free to ask.

Modern Call of Duty is Ass
I know I am late to this party, but I bought MW3 when it was on sale for 30 bucks, so I played it only starting a month or whatever ago.
Holy shit, this game is ass.
Where to even start? I do unironically enjoy this series, as much as its grating hyper-individualized uncritically pro-military USA propaganda is annoying to me. Call it a guilty pleasure, I suppose, but it still is a fun shooter and it's not like my individual purchase is going to make a meaningful difference to the affect it casts on impressionable tweens, teens, and adults. I am a sucker for 'immersive' types of games with dramatic cinematics, narrative and fun casual gameplay.
But damn, are they trying to ruin this series. The imperialism propaganda meter has been turned up to 11 since MW2019, having the fucking gall to reframe real life American war crimes as other countries, emboldening xenophobic vigilantism as long as it's in the best interest of 'what's right' AKA the West and especially the USA. The Black Ops storyline is as uncritically anti-communist as always, but they're getting bold with the 'heroic' portrayal of Ronald Reagan in BO: Cold War and I'm cynically looking forward for how they'll manage to overtly rewrite history to embolden the 1980's and 1990's CIA in Black Ops 6. You can't make the CIA look good without being seriously dishonest or ignorant, and given the franchise's past ties to the actual US Military, I'm expecting a whole lot of the former.
In the MW reboot, they've taken what you could earnestly call a classic, if a bit goofy (and subtle propaganda) storyline into a mediocre (and blatant propaganda) rehash with dwindling levels of effort being put into the campaign, something especially noticeable in MW3. I remember hearing rumors that MW3 started off as a DLC, and man does it feel like it. Several of the missions are basically a mini DMZ session with some exposition thrown in, which feels like filler content that was quicker to make rather than a thought out plan of gameplay. Playing thru MW2019, MW2, and MW3, I think there's a clear slow decline in care and effort put into the campaign, and then a swift smash into a brick wall for the latter game. I won't do spoilers, but the way certain important plot elements of the original games were recreated were, to be generous, undercooked. The 'big thing' comes out of nowhere, feels underwhelming, and extremely contrived.
How about the multiplayer? It's...ok. I play it, I enjoy parts of it. But I've noticed that the classic maps that have been ported over seem to not fit the overhauled gameplay. I don't hate the movement as much as I've seen some complain, but I would personally prefer something closer to the classic mechanics, with just sliding here and there. I will say though, I do think the 'omnidirectional movement system' as they call it in the Black Ops 6 beta is an improvement. It feels like a more refined version of the same vibe, and I look forward to playing more of that game's multiplayer when in comes out late next month.
There are some major gripes I share with others in the community, though. For one thing- please get rid of fucking SBMM. It's just annoying, and sucks fun out of what should be a fun casual game. CoD has always been a fun game to play casually. It is not at its best as a hardcore shooter, and I think that the 'hardcore' gamemodes and ranked queue should be cleanly separated from the mass player group who plays it casually. I saw a dev claiming that SBMM has always been a thing in the classic games. But here's the thing- even if the basic system was present, there is no way it is anywhere near as strict as it is now, and every reasonable player knows that. Most people do not want to grind skill rank; we have Counter-Strike, Valorant, Rainbow Six: Siege, and plenty of other well-balanced, better-made games for that.
Another thing that annoys me but seems hit or miss as a complaint from others, is the netcode. I'm not quite sure if it's peaker's advantage, lag compensations, or whatever other combination of multiplayer netcode terminology, but it just doesn't feel good to me. When I kill other players, it feels like TTK is long and I'm mag-dumping, but when I get killed, it feels like they locked onto my head instantly and took me out with like two shots. Then, when I watch the killcam, they had five business days to slowly move the crosshair towards my direction and destroy my face. It's hard without insight behind the scenes to know how much of this is perceived, and how much is actual latency issues or whatever, but even if it's just a presentation problem it still sucks to play with.
Am I still gonna play CoD? Yeah. I'm still playing MW3, and I pre-ordered BO6 and enjoyed the beta multiplayer overall. But I can dream of games being better and less pumped with shitty messaging. Something something no ethical consumption under capitalism
