Time and Place: Around 232 million years ago, in the Carnian age of the Late Triassic

Odontochelys is known from the Lower Member of the Xiaowa Formation of China, commonly known as the Guanling Fauna

Physical Description: Odontochelys is one of the earliest known turtles - preceded by one, possibly two, precursors other than stem members of the family group - and it showcases how this extremely unique group managed to evolve in the chaos that was the Triassic Explosion. It was simultaneously similar to and very different from living turtles, a true transitional organism. Like other reptiles, it had teeth embedded in its jaws, rather than the toothless beak found in turtle mouths. Like turtles, it had the lower plastron extending from its ribs, but unlike living turtles it had no upper shell - instead, it just had widened ribs and no bony shell around its body. The ribs and the vertebrae were put together differently from modern turtles as well, and its skull was more stretched out compared to its living relatives. It didn’t have fused tail bones, and its scapulae were very different from living turtles. It had short limbs and long, thick fingers, as well as a decently sized shell. It was about forty centimeters long from snout to tail tip. 

Diet: The diet of Odontochelys is fairly uncertain, despite us having its teeth; though they are small and peg like, we can’t really extrapolate a function since we don’t actually know its precise ecology! They may have been used for stripping plants, but it’s also possible they were used to chipp up algae and other aquatic water plants, or even invertebrates! So, more research there is clearly needed. 

Behavior: The life history of Odontochelys is actually a big mystery. It was found in a marine environment, leading initial studies to indicate it was marine. However, it had the hands of a fresh water organism, including fresh water turtles today. Furthermore, studies of other early turtles indicate that turtles first arose on the land, rather than in the water, and later groups would adapt to water life; the limbs of Odontochelys share similarities with tortoises and support a terrestrial lifestyle. So, the ecology of Odontochelys has been a constant battle. That said, there is some evidence that it was actually marine - and may represent an early experiment in ocean life by turtles. One fossil of Odontochelys indicates that it had completely messed up shoulder bones, likely due to a problem in life rather than destruction of the fossil. This pattern resembles decompression sickness, aka the bends, aka the condition caused by a diving animal coming up much too fast from a lower depth. Modern turtles have complex behavioral adaptations to avoid the bends, so Odontochelys may be an early experiment in marine life in a group mostly adapted for terrestrial life. In this transition to ocean life, it not only lacked better physical adaptations for the ocean, but also better behavioral ones, and was stricken with the bends on its trip back to the surface. So, as we try to determine its ecology and behavior, these clued paint a rich tapestry of the world’s most transitional turtle. A pioneer! 

Ecosystem: Odontochelys was found in - and thus, the null hypothesis is that it lived in - an ocean environment near the coast of the Tethys sea. This was a deep, open ocean - pelagic, hence the bends and problems Odontochelys faced trying to deal with the ocean. It was a very fertile ecosystem as well, with a variety of Triassic marine animals showcasing the rapid evolution of these groups. Among the invertebrates, there were many different types of Ammonites, plenty of bivalves, brachiopods, and crinoids & sea cucumbers as well. Still, the fascinating part of the ecosystem was the sheer number of marine reptiles. There were Thalattosaurs such as Anshusaurus and Xinpusaurus; Placodonts like Psephochelys and Sinocyamodus; and Ichthyosaurs like Qianicthyosaurus, Guizhouichthyosaurus, Guanlingsaurus, and Callawayia. One of many beautiful deposits of marine animals from this Period - and the many Ichthyosaurs would have been major predators of the relative n00b Odontochelys. 

Other: Odontochelys also just looks really weird because it basically looks like your usual turtle except it doesn’t have a freaking shell so here we are with this oddity. It’s transitional in shape, transitional in ecology, transitional in behavior, and just. What the heck. What the heck, Odontochelys. If you need more proof for evolution despite knowing about the dinosaur - bird transition, have I got a friend for you.

B) Biggest fear: A very realistic fear, having to face the death of someone I love.

C) Current time: Ten o’clock in the evening.

E) Every day starts with: Apple juice, talking to my mum, and wishing I could stay in bed longer.

F) Favourite song at the moment: The state of my favourite song is currently in flux, because I’ve been listening to Halsey’s ‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’ and nothing else for the last few days but I can’t yet pick a favourite. Off the top of my head, one that I keep cycling back to is ‘Heaven In Hiding’.

G) Ghosts. Are they real?: No, but man do I wish they were.

H) Hometown: Guernsey. Within that, Castel, but it doesn’t really count as a hometown. The Greater Vazon Area, if I could call it that.

I) In love with?: Everyone I ever meet, in some ways. Everyone who smiles at me, who talks to me. If you want to know who owns the most of my heart, though, that's Alastair.

J) Jealous of?: Everyone I ever meet, again. People who are better than me at things, people who are smarter and more popular and have things that I want. People who are happy more often than I am. People who go to concerts that I can't, because of time and money and sometimes the fact that they happened ten years ago.

K) Killed Someone?: No, and I'm not planning on it.

L) Last time you cried: Last night, I had a meltdown and cried for 45 minutes straight. Before that, it was the day before when I was reading sad stories. I am a mess.

M) Middle name: Gillian. I might change it, or add another, at some point. Nothing has really stood out to me yet, though. Maybe Carteret. 

N) Number of siblings: Now this is a damn good question. I don’t know for sure. I have one half-brother whom I have met and who lives next door, he’s sixteen years older than me and has been a major influence on my music taste. I know I have at least two, maybe three more half-siblings on my dad’s side, the oldest of which is forty.

O) One wish: That I get to keep doing what I love, that it makes me happy, and that I can continue to love and be loved in return.

P) Person you last called/texted: Alastair, as ever. I only really ever text two people, and they are him and my mother.

Q) Questions you are always asked: “What are you doing next year?” is one that I get a lot. The peril of graduating Sixth Form is the constant questioning of where you’re going in September and what you’re doing there. I’m going to Winchester and I’m studying Creative Writing, before anyone sends me this exact question in an ask.

R) Reasons to smile: Seeing my windowsill garden grow, music, reading, seeing Alastair, talking to Alastair, being with Alastair. You get the picture.

S) Song you last sung: Paramore’s ‘Rose-Coloured Boy’. It keeps getting stuck in my head.

T) Time you woke up: Eleven, this morning. I was awake until three watching the election results come in, so I didn’t even bother trying to get up any earlier.

U) Underwear colour: Plain black, and a white binder.

V) Verse from a song you like: It took me a long time to decide what exact song and which exact verse, but I ended up on this little excerpt is from KT Tunstall’s ‘Universe & U’. You can feel the love in the verse, it’s comfortable and cosy and I just, I know what it’s talking about. That appreciation, the gratitude of having someone so good, it’s beautifully evident in this verse.

W) Worst habit: Probably biting my nails? A good 70% of habits I have are pretty bad, but I think this is both the worst and the most long-running.

Y) Your favourite food: I really, really love dark chocolate. Not just because I’m edgy, I genuinely prefer it to milk chocolate these days. In terms of savoury, most things involving pasta are pretty high up my favourites list, too.

b - biggest fear: all of them?? Like, name a fear I probably have it. That’s what you get for having like four anxiety disorders at the same time probably lol. Uh... to narrow it down I’m really bad with heights, I have an extreme phobia of anything related to doctors or hospitals, and I guess overall I’m just terrified of failure and dying alone in miserable obscurity. Major life decisions are bad and I don’t like them.

c - current time: 10:42 PM!!

d - drink you last had: uh... water? Before that I think it was a raspberry banana smoothie.

e - every day starts with: checking tumblr/my email/messaging my girl unless my brain is too dumb to figure out how to write words down and send them to her. I really need to learn how to form sentences early in the morning lol.

f - favorite song: oh gosh. I legit have a whole hundred-and-fifty-song playlist of my favorite songs. One of my all-time faves is Hotel California by the Eagles. Every time I hear that song I am obligated to start rocking out, it’s pretty embarrassing.

g - ghosts, are they real: Idk?? I think the jury’s still out on that. 

h - hometown: the depressing suburbia surrounding Chicago

i - in love with: robots, weird science facts, weird historical facts, really good desserts, breezy days, chocolate, really good music, Prompto Argentum... I have a lot of loves.

j - jealous of: people with friends? Especially friends they get to see and talk to regularly?

k - killed someone: uh.... literally or metaphorically? Because literally-speaking, no. Metaphorically-speaking, also no. I am a soft marshmallow please do not harm me.

l - last time you cried: yesterday? I think? I was reading a really good fanfic and then my girlfriend said a nice thing about me and I was in tears. Idk I might’ve cried this morning at some point. I cry a lot okay this is normal for me.

it’s great because I’m still undecided, I’m two years older than most of my peers, none of the things I want to major in are likely to be financially lucrative, and when people aren’t asking what my major is they’re assuming I’m still in highschool.
