When Seil slinks out of the hospital at half-past eight in the morning, he isn't expecting an ambush.

"You're not hurt!"

He instinctively pushes away from the attack, only for the words to sink in. He's not being strangled, he's being hugged. It's still weird, but it's not entirely unwelcome.

"Tae-yeon... How long have you been waiting here?"

Tae-yeon Kim is probably the only person in the world Seil thinks he can call a friend. Prior to last night, a few other members of the Top 5 could have qualified, but not anymore. Those bridges are nothing but ash.

She lets go of him and takes a step back, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Ever since you were airlifted out. Soon as I found out what hospital you were taken to, I... I had to make sure you were still alive."

Seil's neck prickles. Of the seven people trapped in the collapsed stage site, five survived. Hyesung's in surgery and apparently Do-yoon's in a much worse state than any of them thought, but they should still live.

"Hey," Tae-yeon says, her eyes crinkling around the edges, "let's bail. We can talk more somewhere private."

"I can't go home," Seil mutters, tugging on the strap of his messenger bag. "My parents... They won't be..."

She rolls her eyes. "Obviously. You can crash on my sofa for now. Min-hee won't mind; they're too busy doing damage control with the rest of the staff to notice, honestly."

Seil doesn't feel up to arguing with that. They take her car -- a plain, scratched up sedan -- back to her apartment, and she doesn't force him to talk on the way. He's too busy running through the events of the night in his head, trying to pinpoint the exact moment when everything went wrong.

When they get inside, Seil sits on the sofa and cradles one of the decorative pillows to his chest. Tae-yeon brings two cups of herbal tea in after a few more minutes of silence, and sets it town on the low table.

"Is it true?" she asks finally, trepidation dripping from her words. "One of the light techs caught wind from the rescue team that... that Gyu-hyuk's dead."

Seil clenches the pillow tightly. "...Yeah. We took our eyes off him for a minute and he... he hung himself."

Tae-yeon gags on her tea. After struggling to swallow it, she rests the mug between her thighs, no longer looking interested in it. "Oh my god. That's... Right at the end...?"

"He didn't leave a note," Seil says, but it feels like a lie in his mouth. He'd seen Do-yoon clutching scraps of paper, white knuckled and shaking, but that's not proof of anything. In any case, Seil has a sinking feeling he knows what the note would have said.

Silence again fills the apartment. Eventually, Tae-yeon clears the mugs -- both cold and neither more than a few sips from full -- and Seil rests his head on the sofa arm. He's exhausted, but the thought of sleeping feels foreign.

(He shouldn't be here. He needs to turn himself in. It's the only way to absolve the sins festering in his rib cage.)

"Tell me what I can do to help you," Tae-yeon says softly when she returns from the kitchen. "Even if it's just to leave you alone for now."

Seil shakes his head and, impulsively, reaches for her hand. "Stay. Please. I'm... I'm afraid."

Delicately, she presses her lips to his fingers, and settles down beside him. "Okay. I promise."

inha regularly listens to podcasts and the like while she's warming up/cooling down; obviously she needs the proper music for her dance routines but when she's not in active rehearsal mode she'll put on whatever

hyesung used to sneak onto fishing boats when he was a kid because he first thought he'd grow up to be a fishmonger. this failed because he gets extremely seasick

seil never properly learned how to ride a bike as a kid and even as an adult he can't quite figure it out. it annoys him to no end and he can't let anyone know because if hyesung ever found out he'd never hear the end of it

Gyu-hyuk looks so different now. His face is pale, and the bags under his eyes are heavy. He seems thinner too; either he hasn't been eating, or the food isn't nutritious enough.

Though, it could be both. Prison wasn't kind to anyone.

They pick up the phones at the same time. Do-yoon barely resists the urge to put his hand up to the glass. He can't help but tremble.

"You look well," Gyu-hyuk rasps. His voice has been getting rougher ever since his arrest. Do-yoon suspects that outside of the visits, he never speaks.

It's been six months since the stage collapse, and five since Gyu-hyuk's sentencing. Ever since Do-yoon was discharged from the hospital, he's come to visit every week.

("I'd come to visit you every day if I could."

"I don't deserve that.")

They have a routine. Do-yoon updates him on the outside world, and Gyu-hyuk shares the smallest tidbits about prison life. It's obvious that he's holding back so much more, but Do-yoon doesn't press him on it. Some things should stay buried.

"Juyoung made the finals," Do-yoon tells him. Some people insisted she had an unfair advantage in Season 5, but it hadn't shaken her. She'd been leading strong all through the preliminaries, and Do-yoon's confident she'll win.

Gyu-hyuk cracks a weak smile. It splinters across his face for a moment, then disappears. "I'm proud of her. She deserves this."

The conversation lulls. He knows Juyoung's only come to the prison a couple times, and Inha hasn't visited even once. Though he's been in contact with them both all this time, Do-yoon struggles to ever discuss Gyu-hyuk. It's a wound none of them have figured out how to stitch.

"May I be selfish?" Gyu-hyuk suddenly asks. His eyes are watering ever so slightly.

Do-yoon nods, and leans forwards until his forehead grazes the glass between them.

Gyu-hyuk bites down on his lip. Then, he murmurs, "I've been wanting to tell you this for so long, but I didn't want to burden you with it."

"You won't burden me."

He closes his eyes. "I love you."

Do-yoon tightly presses his lips together, desperate to hold back the tears building up within him. He knows, he's known all along, but it hurts so terribly to hear it now, when they're both so broken.

"I'm sorry. I love you too," he croaks, and Gyu-hyuk presses his forehead to the glass too. They could almost be touching.

It's a cold and bitter little world. Do-yoon stays there with him, hand tightly clenching the phone, until they've both cried themselves dry.

(Maybe some day, he thinks, he'll be able to feel Gyu-hyuk's warmth in his arms again.)

**This one is tricky to translate. Do-yoon says 정신일도 하사불성 (jungshinildo hasabulsung), which is an idiom that comes from the Chinese characters 精神一到何事不成. I /think/ what happened is Hyesung, who is not the most book smart character, didn’t recognize the saying and misinterpreted what Do-yoon meant as 인사불성 (insabulsung, lit. “becoming unconscious”). The first part of the saying “jungshinildo” sounds phonetically similar to a phrase that means “losing one’s consciousness”, and both phrases end in the syllables “-bulsung,” hence the confusion.

I'm reading the user concert Q&A for buried stars rn (and trying to translate some of the more interesting bits; stay tuned) and one of the questions is whether the cast ever did a combined performance

the answer: yes, and the song selected is "fly" by lee seung yeol...you know, that song that plays during some of the most emotional scenes in misaeng, a show I love to bits

anyway, this made me stop everything immediately and think about who from misaeng I'd cast as who if there was ever a kdrama adaptation of bstars, so here for your consideration (spoiler warning for bstars):
