thx for reblogging that post (and adding onto it) on Kunikida's """erasure""" from the narrative. I stay mostly out of kicking the juggernaut pairing hornet's nest. altho it's about time the big ship fans stop acting like the world revolves around them. I admire the bravery bc this fandom climate silences me, and I know it silences more people
I have no issues kicking the nest out of spite against the most aggressive wasps
If we're using wasp metaphors, I've met SKK enjoyers that are like bumble bees. Super chill and its always a pleasent experience. And while I do have quite a bit of bias from being a shipper, I really enjoy talking with people who actually read the manga and analyze SKK and KNDZ's canon relationships.
But much like bees, its always the wasps who ruin it for everyone.
My vendetta against SKK shippers isn't against the bumble bees; its against the wasps who haven't touched BSD outside of dead apple/15/stormbringer and talk like they know anything, spread misinformation about my favorite character to promote their ship, spam the comments of people who dare to post Dazai or Chuuya in a ship that isn't SKK saying how it should've been SKK, have a superiority complex because they're pandered to by the producers of BSD and calling any other Dazai or Chuua ship "fake" while claiming SKK is canon because it gets more fanservice bait, harass Asagiri about SKK and even sending him death threats after he said it wasn't canon.
Its very obvious who has actually read BSD and who spend most of their time on BSD tiktok/ao3 by their opinions on characters, most notably SKK vs KNDZ, and most of the time its those people who are the metaphorical wasps.
Nothing Asagiri said in that interview about SKK was anything new in any way if you read the manga, but it was a slap in the face to people who got 80% of their view on SKK's dynamic from fanfics.
I've said it before, I don't hate SKK's canon dynamnic. I started out neutral on the ship when first getting into BSD but after my fate was sealed to being a dedicated KNDZ shipper I quickly grew to detest SKK as a ship because of shipper behavior. I've been suspecting it for a while, but getting confirmation that SKK is the reason my favorite anime character of all time has been getting shafted sparked a new rage in me against SKK and having him say SKK hate each other and there is no canonical feelings gives me a high that eases the pain of how pissed off I am
But speaking of Kunikida's "erasure", it seems as though he was always intended to be on a similar level to Dazai for screentime. I took notes of about 10 characters from BSD and tallied how many chapters they appeared in from chapter 1 to 53. 50 seemed like a good number of chapters and 53 is the final chapter of the Cannibalism arc stuff. My only criteria was they had to physically appear in the chapter, no flashbacks or mentions.
Atsushi was obviously 1st place with 44 chapters at about 83% of chapters. Dazai in second with 34 chapters (64%), and Kunikida in third with 32 chapters (60%)
Dazai often gets credited as Atsushi's mentor but really Kunikida is the one who is more suited for that title. He's the one who actually helped Atsushi adjust to his new life working at the ADA in the first arc, he was the one who talked to Atsushi when he cried realizing the ADA is full of people who care and don't think he's a burden, he's the one who teaches Atsushi to fight and not over rely on his tiger power.
Dazai brought the street cat home, Kunikida is the one who takes care of it by feeding it, bathing it, taking it to the vet, cleaning its litterbox, etc. But Dazai gets called the cats owner because it was his idea to bring it home and he plays with it sometimes. It aint just the narrative that erases him to meet the SKK quota, the fans erase how important he is especially to Atsushi

---BSD SPOILER (chapter 83/season 5 ep 2)---
oh my god. I'm reading the manga for bsd and it must have been so traumatizing for ranpo to find out that Fukuchi, one of the people who helped take care of him when he was younger, was Kamui. Like holy shit that didn't hit me when I was watching bsd.

yeahh atsushi's internal monologue and plea always felt like a eye of the storm moment to me, absolute silence, except for the plea for "somebody anybody... please fight with me". it could have stood well enough on its own, just atsushi calling out in the darkness, the music was not needed
EXACTLY exactly!! It's a moment of complete solitude, and that can only translate with low and slow music / complete silence tbh.
(Following a line of thought I ended up rambling a bit about some things I haven't had the chance to bring up so far, it's quite negative on occasions so leaving it under the cut / feel freee to ignore)
I don't knowwwww like why are they compressing the episodes so badly to the point in three (3) episodes they never had time to roll the ending credits. I don't get it. In my very humble opinion: chapters 84-87 should have taken one episode and half (again. The sskk / Fitzgerald fight has the same length and that's the anime screentime it got). And it actually works perfectly, because chapter 87 *needs* to be a cliffhanger at the end of the episode, so they could have easily arrenged the episodes like: all the previous episodes events (chapters 78-83) should have taken two episodes and half, then the remaining half together with the entirety of episode four would have adapted chapters 84-87. As in season 4, the amount of events adapted isn't really the issue (they're almost adapting on panel by panel basis) as much as it is the restless pace that leaves you trying to catch your breath. By making the events adapted so far take 4 episodes they could have easily spaced everything better, included some things that were overlooked (I feel like leaving out Fukuchi's motives was a big loss... Like as an anime only, why is he even doing what he's doing? I know some people have speculated it's for political reasons and I understand the argument, but then again even if they wanted to include it, how could they possibly make it fit)- not to mention, well, maybe have enough time to show the ending and not make it overlap with scenes that have a completely different atmosphere.
I don't know why they're cutting things so short. The pace was a problem with season 4 too, but now in addition to that there was also a massive and evident quality drop to the animation which... Eh. Episode 3 had whole scenes of just static frames which are extremely awkward to see, and a thousand times more so in a supposedly action centered episode. From the very beginning: if one was bitter enough to bring together all the time they spent on the same Akutagawa / Dazai on opposite sides frame in the first flashback sequence they'd get 36 seconds, which is just unacceptable.
I don't get it. Wouldn't it make more sense to make as many episodes / seasons as possible as to have more dvds to sell AND to keep the fans engaged with the franchise for as long as possible? It's not like the manga updates super quickly so they were in a rush to catch up or something. But that can only lead me to one consideration: what was the reason of having two seasons come out in the same year? From my very limited perspective, applying a little common sense, here's a very simplified way to describe how I'd guess things should work: anime company releases a season. The anime season gets the fans invested, so anime company can sell them merch for a while- and that's why you can attest an abundance of merch release simultaneus and following the anime airing. After some time passes, the audience will start losing interest: that's when anime company releases a new season, and the cycle starts over. If anime company releases the seasons with such a small time frame between them, aren't they losing profit? This way anime company basically ends up losing all the potential profit of the first wave of interest that comes after the season that released first. And it's reasonable to guess that, given the unusual amount of it, bsd profits /a lot/ from selling merch, so I don't get it. (And that is neglecting, in a way that is reprehensible on its own, mentioning the negative ethical consequences that releasing one season right after the other has, especially in relation of overworking animators. I was hoping the execution of season 5 was assigned to a new animators team who worked on it in parallel to season 4 but, given the evident drop in quality and overall how unpolished the new season is, I'm afraid one can't afford the luxury to believe that anymore).
Tl;dr: Capitalism ruined the Atsushi “I’m all alone someone come rescue me” scene, which should have had either silence or a gloomy background music, but instead got the ending song because they just don't have space to fit things. I really can't seem to understand why they'd rush the anime release because it doesn't make sense to me from any point you see it. Also justice for chapters 84-87

soukoku is bsd original name for the dzi and chuu duo, it's not a thing in bungou to alchemist or other bungou media. though, people do ship them in many non-bsd bungou media too, but like said it's not their ship name, or a term used anywhere else than in bsd. please refrain from using it when talking about other versions of those two, you're being rude to the irl writers too when you reduce charactes based on them to something that only one series out of hundreds uses 😔 i know you mean nothing bad, but just had to point out this. if you have to use ship name, it's dazanaka/dazachuu (or nakadaza/chuudaza depending on which dynamics you prefer for the ship). japanese fandoms for the various bungou medias haven't really fully decided on which reading to use for chuu, as his surname and first name both start with the same kanji, that can be read either as "naka" or "chuu". and as dzi is a surname, some find it weird to only refer to chuu with his first name when the other one is always called by his surname, meanwhile some are totally all about calling the short guy chuu anyways even if it's a bit unfair. but the japanese bunal fandom mostly uses dazanaka (or nakadaza for inverted dynamics). so yep, pick your choice, but no skk ever again for bunal or other bungou media versions of them, thank you. have a nice day o/
ps. there's also a comprehensive info on pixiv's dictionary regarding the bsd ship (https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E5%A4%AA%E4%B8%AD), and it also mentions bunal's variation (https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E5%A4%AA%E4%B8%AD%28%E6%96%87%E3%82%A2%E3%83%AB%29) which has same ship name. people add (bsd) or (bunal) behind the ship name to differentiate them. among western fans it's especially seen on ao3 when people tag their fics. you can use translator to get a gist of the links' content if you don't know japanese!
Ok......wow.
Thanks for the reminder?
I think I'll stick with 太中 or 中太? Ig it would be better?
