i’ll never forgive bones for not animating dazais expression as he had forgotten how to breathe as he watched the storm that was chuuya decimate the battlefield BUT INSTEAD they made him emotionless. bones you will be dealt with.

the chronological order of the BSD light novels
anon asked: hi! i think you've said before that it doesn't really matter what order the light novels are read in, but i plan to read them chronologically, instead of publishing order but i'm a bit confused about what the exact order would be. i know fifteen would be before stormbringer and i believe dark era after that? and beast can be read at any time, i assume? i was just wondering if one were to read them as chronologically as possible, if you knew what exactly that order would be? i hope that makes sense and i apologize if this is an inconvenient or silly question! thank you!
this is one of my favourite things to talk about so don't worry! also, something you need to be aware of is that a lot (like the majority) of these lns depict parts of the timeline that are really far removed from the main story being discussed! but it'd be really counter-productive to say something like 'read pages 16-52 of x novel and then begin y novel and then go back to x' so salijfsall
anyway, here's the chronological order:
volume 3 (The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency) this novel begins with an excerpt from the present
volume ?? (The Day I Picked Up Dazai) currently not available in English, but you can read the fan translation on BSD Bibliophile! Side A is set in the canon universe and Side B is set in the Beast universe
volume 7 (Dazai, Chuuya, Age 15)
volume 8 (Stormbringer) has flashbacks to ~ the same time as Untold Origins
volume 2 (Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era)
volume 1 (Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam) again, this novel begins with an excerpt from the present
volume 6 (BEAST) this novel is set in an alternate universe, but appears to take place at the same time as season 1
volume 4 (55 Minutes) & volume 5 (Dead Apple) both these novels take place in the present, sometime after the Guild Arc
volume ? (Bungou Stray Dogs: Another Story) this also hasn't yet been translated into English, but is available on BSD Bibliophile- and the manga is being translated into English, too. the timeline is a little unclear, but it must take place well after Dazai joins the Agency I hope this helps!!

Sorta continuation of this, here's some observations on how the bsd anime adaptation rate (average of number of chapters adapted per episode) changed every season:
Season 1: 10 plot episodes + 2 ln adaptation. Adapts up to chapter 16. Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.60
Season 2: 8 plot episodes + 4 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 17-37 (21 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.63 (+1.03)
Season 3: 9 plot episodes + 3 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 38-39 & 41-53 (15 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.67 (-0.96)
Season 4: 10 plot episodes + 3 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 54-77 (24 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.40 (+0.73)
※ I opted out of counting the Hitori Ayumi OVA this time around, reasoning that the factors that play into conditioning the season episodes adaptation rate wouldn't have influenced the OVA given its nature of stand-alone episode.
Seasons 1-3 adaptation rate: 27 plot episodes, 52 adapted chapters. Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.93
Season 4 adaptation rate compared to the average of all the previous seasons: 2.40 (+0.47)
Seasons 1-4 overall adaptation rate: 37 plot episodes, 76 adapted chapters. Total average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.05
That being said, let's try to guess how season 5 might play out taking in the previous four seasons adaptation rate of 2.05 as standard. Here's the fun thing: if season 5 is just 12 / 13 episodes of plot adaptation, that would mean adapting up to chapter 102 / 104. Coincidentally, chapter 104 (fukufuku flashback) is also the furthest in the manga plot that was shown in the last season 5 trailer. Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but as of now a new light novel adaptation seems positively unlikely and a Stormbringer adpatation basically impossible to make fit.

if its okay, can you rate these bsd ships and share your thoughts on them?
atsulucy
soukoku
fyolai
odazai
akuzai
sorry if its quite long, no pressure to answer btw
hello again!! no worries abt it being long!!
• Ats.ulucy — 10/10!! i love them! honestly my favourite atsushi ship. i love the way their backstories compliment each other and the way they genuinely care about each other makes me sob.
• Souk.oku — 10/10, probably my favourite ship of all time. a little bit cliché but idc! there’s too much to say without making a whole post about it but my absolute favourite thing about these two in particular is dazai’s insistence that chuuya is 100% human, and the way they subtly show their care and knowledge of each other. SB & 15 are my 2nd and 3rd favourite LNs respectively so these two have a special place in my heart both separately and as a pair
• Fy.olai — 7/10! i definitely don’t dislike this ship, and honestly i wish i cared about it that little bit more. they have a very interesting dynamic and i’m particularly fascinated by the way nikolai views fyodor!
• Odaz.ai — 0/10… probably expected but i just don’t like this ship. it’s just a bit too weird for me that dazai is a minor for most of the time he knows oda and even the idea of future-AUs where oda lives don’t sit right with me. platonically i think they’re cool though!
• Akuz.ai — 0/10 again… yeah, i really don’t like this one. akutagawa and dazai are both my favourite characters in the series and i just can’t get on with shipping them together knowing the way they canonically view each other. perhaps platonically if they ever confronted their issues i would be okay with it though!

actually have beef with the bsd manga bc why do i have to read 5 light novels just to know why everyone cares about chuuya. this should be in the actual story not a side quest
first of all, i believe you actually only have to read 2. there's only 2 with him in them, and they're both very interesting so if you wanna know more about him i would stick to just those.
but overall i actually completely agree with this. i like chuuya hes a genuinely interesting character who is much more central to the grander story than the mangas story, but i totally agree that more depth should be given to him in the manga that is frankly never going to come. in the manga he is literally nothing more than Dazai's ex partner, hes basically just a plot device that shows up when the story calls for a Deus Ex. you can still get Glimpses of their profound bond in that but it just does not hit the same without the ln context and that truly truly bothers me. i think its bc the manga is about Atsushi, not Dazai, and Atsushi has... never even met Chuuya as far as i remember??? so hes just not as relevant.
there is the one thing i can give the anime credit for: although i dislike the order they adapted the mangas into, i do think the inclusion of 15 was not the worst idea in the world, because it gives context to his character that is... yknow... extremely important, and extremely lacking in the manga. i just have no idea why they added it before s3 given how little s3 has to do with soukoku at all. its a sskk arc and that is the point.
i actually have a lot of hot takes about the light novels in relation to both the anime and the manga. but im not sure the people are ready to hear them.

it's frustrating watching a bsd gacha vid about chuuya and they make it all about dazai. look dazai is cool, but when i watch a chuuya vid i want it to focus mainly on chuuya pls 😭
give me sb, give me 15 ln, don't make the majority of the vid dazai then you title your vid "bsd react to chuuya"
it's one thing if its about their partnership, but even then, most skk react vids focus more on dazai than chuuya.
and lets not even begin to talk about how horrible skk characterization is in bsd gacha reacts.

This is going to be a long one but I have a TL;DR at the end on bold:
I’d say that season one, like all first seasons isn’t that good cause they are introducing a lot of the characters. One thing you have to note is that BSD has a HUGE amount of lore and world-building (the manga has been going on since 2012 and the anime since 2016).
World-building aside, Season 2, aka the American arc, introduces North American authors into the mix and we learn about one of the most important items in the entire world.
After season 2 is the Dead Apple move which introduces season 3s villan and gives us more backstory to Atsushi.
Season 3 has mixed reactions from the fans, some love it, some didn’t but I’d say watch it for yourself.
Season 4 and currently 5 are THE BEST seasons in the show! (Won’t give too many spoilers but let’s just say that it’s HYPE)
One thing you should note before you continue is that seasons 2-4 use their first 3 episodes to adapt a light novel from the series (season 1 did this technically with the Azure Messanger thing but they butchered it a lot)
So the season 2 LN (light novel) they adapt first is Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era which gives us more backstory into Dazai and why he switched sides. The story is told from his friend, Oda sakunosuke.
Season 3 adapts the LN: Chuuya, Dazai, 15. Which gives us a backstory to Chuuya and how he joined the Mafia (as well as setting up for another LN called Stormbringer, which rumors are saying might turn into the next movie!)
Season 4 adapts the LN: The Untold Origins of the Armed Detective Agency. Which, as it sounds, is how the ADA was formed and gives us a Ranpo and Fukuzawa Backstory and how the agency was formed!
Season 5 didn’t adapt any LN but that’s a good thing cause this one is PACKED with excitement and craziness
TL;DR: Bungo Stray Dogs has a lot of world building which is why the first season is kinda meh but the others are really good, we also have a movie and the anime adapts a Light novel for the first 3 episodes every new season sans 5.
Overall, I love it and I think you should give it a try!
@ anyone who likes bungou stray dogs, can you tell me what you love about it? like what's the best part of it to you and what makes you want to keep watching?
A friend of mine is absolutely obsessed with it (anime, manga & novel) and we started watching it together but I just can't get into it
we finished watching season 1 and now she asked if I would like to watch the rest of the anime which uhhhh, not rlly
so I'd love to hear some opinions & experiences from people who love it!
