Unexpected Ship Black Sails Musical Parallels | V. XIV.

I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

Phoenixflare x Hozier's "In The Woods Somewhere" "Lost in the Woods" Secret Santa Prompt for @february13rose "In the poem, the protagonist finds himself in the woods, and is terrified by beasts until his love interest in Heaven sends a mentor to pull him out of the woods and set him back on the virtuous path he had lost." (x)

To me, this gifset is a very loose 'retelling' of Dante (Dion) moving through the "circles of hell," though primarily the version of the stories presented in Hozier songs (both In The Woods Somewhere, which these lyrics come from, and most of the phenomenal album Unreal Unearth: Unending, particularly Hymn to Virgil) which that draw very heavily on the imagery and themes of The Inferno, albeit in that more romantic way only Andrew Hozier Byrne can be. In my mind, we are following a Dion reflecting on the madness inflicted on him by Ultima, both the slow degradation of his confidence in his father and his ability—and how, after what he did in Twinside, he considers himself lost and unworthy of saving. At the start, he is waking to a version of himself he cannot face, one burdened by regret & a lack of desire to live–but who is slowly led back to "the surface" and forgiveness by "the voice from heaven" (Joshua), who is also in a way his Virgil in that he is the authoritative guide leading him through things he doesn't understand.

In my original vision, the ending of this set is a lot sadder—more in alignment with the tone of the game and Hymn to Virgil (where Dante refuses to leave hell because he won't leave Virgil, and...they are trapped in hell together lol). In this, he escapes that hell with Joshua (out of respect for Luna's desire for a happy ending), both because he #DeservesIt and also because of the Phoenix's proverbial and literal ability to "revive" him, whether through love or his powers. Either way, the redemption and forgiveness he desires is achieved through his alliance with Joshua–which is actually kinda like the story told in canon, at least to me!

Also, side note: the grid was done in reference to Dion’s talk of his gilded cage in the quest Clive does for him in the Hideaway. It just struck me as poignant to give to him here.

yes basically in the documents it was shown that joshua's dating rumors (which he was immensely harrassed for) were basically used as a marketing scheme by hybe and basically cut seungkwan's hiatus short because of this situation as well. in other words, they were used by hybe and it's truly severe and i feel like seungkwan's statement just really says everything

Fire is many things to Jote. It is rebirth, it is something to be feared but it is something kind all at once. Fire is something she cannot be free from; sick reminders adorning her temple, roots to never be forgotten.

Fire is the reminder, the shape of the sigil seared into her belly; a phoenix in flight, a remnant of a time when the Undying were devoured by madness when their messiah slept in an everlasting coma. The offering of skin, smooth or scarred by war: it was a ritual how steel burned flesh in obsession, in barbaric practices in shared mania.

Fire, the Phoenix: it all haunts her dreams, identity without edges defining who she is outside of the Undying. She does not know who she is without it all. She is merely a blank page, who the Undying stained with misery and devotion to a dying man.

Fire is clemency. She was taught this. She was taught to not be afraid; the numb skin after flames kill nerves is a blessing. The cold is foreign to her, Shiva's boon new. She thinks she was born with a fever.

To put it simply: she is not afraid of what kills and decays rotting flesh.

Ps: I understand this is a pretty hefty overgeneralisation but I don’t mean every individual man and every individual woman all feel this way. Not only that but generally tend to be drawn to more interesting and complex characters rather than “here’s a sexy character with no plot”. I loved how NEO pulled the rug out with Rindo’s character. At first, he generally seems much more sociable and outwardly friendly compared to Neku and then the game quickly goes "yeah, nah, he’s a huge fucking mess too." He’s a good kid fundamentally at his core but he can also be whiny, hypocritical, passive-aggressive, and kind of insensitive at times. He has a tendency to be judgemental and harsh to the people around him while not acknowledging his own faults, like when he complains about Beat joining the team even though he saved their lives beforehand because he’s not Neku or when he gives Fret shit for fawning over Eiji Oji and Kanon while falling for Motoi’s BS. He’s so pessimistic about himself and others that not even a death game that heavily emphasizes the value of teamwork can get him to fully come out of his shell, which is where his time-travel powers come in AND EVEN THEN it’s a double-edged sword since on one hand, it forces him to actively step up to the plate and survey the situation to find the best possible solution, which leads to him slowly growing out of his shell, but on the other, it also leads to him becoming overly reliant on his time travel so that he can walk back from potentially life-changing decisions without having to worry about it since he has a magic reset button. Which ends up biting him in the ass. Hard.

He’s one of those types of people who is ultimately a thinker and planner instead of a do-er, but his being young and overly impressionable takes this personality quirk to such an extreme that he's foundationally useless to most groups. He’s the type of person who you have in a group project who sits around and does nothing, but then complains with the project does poorly because he couldn't be bothered to speak.

He's so unconfident and directionless that he uses effectively Instagram as a means to listen to someone who sounds like some 2deep4u philosopher post dumb flowery bullshit that effectively has all the meaning of "Drink water when you're thirsty." and he admits to finding such "deep" meaning in these posts that it supposedly helped him through life. Because he's 15 and doesn't know anything.

However, all of this makes him interesting as a character because he’s, again, still a fundamentally good kid at his core. While he’s shown to have a fuse, he is also the kind of person who has the ability to think his emotions through. That's what we ultimately see when he and Fret finally talk and drop their beef. The game depicting Rindo's capacity for self-awareness and emotional reflection is a positive revelation of his character strengths. He proves that he's capable of recognizing when he's in the wrong and knows how to apologize, a trait he shows quite a few times throughout the story, while also doing everything he can to set things right as well as be more understanding toward how his friends feels.

He’s kind of the guy who will drop everything to help a little kid out, even when there’s no tangible benefit to doing so and he and the others are shown to be on limited time, shows empathy to his friends/fallen enemies, and feels massive amounts of guilt for his actions, even if he didn’t know better at the time.

Hell, the entire endgame is fueled by his selfish yet understandable desire to save the people he cares about most from total erasure, to the point that he’s willing to risk thousands of lives to do so. But not only is he shown to be internally grappling with himself regarding his decision but he’s also willing to take responsibility and ensure that EVERYTHING goes right not just for himself and his friends but the people of Shibuya in general, in a parallel to Neku’s own selfish if understandable decision to put the bonds he formed in the original game (particularly with Joshua) over the actual city.

Characters aren't interesting simply by switching between 2 different character traits. They're interesting when all those traits are being expressed at the same time for reasons that are consistent within their internal logic. You gotta be a good writer to pull that off and you gotta know when to show off these dimensions during your story to achieve proper dramatic effect when the time calls for it and NEO I feel does this pretty damn well.

LM: The Return of Superman Idol Edition

BS: Episode 3 “I Think I Love You ” Part 1. The window to window wall frames the first signs of snowfall in Seoul. Today we’re invited into a cute modern style apartment with an open kitchen concept and beautiful gray accented glass cabinets.

LM: There is a lot of music related decor in and around the house, from the signed guitars hung in a protective case on either side of the kitchen while the record player in the living room plays some acoustic music. Could today's superdad be a musician?

BS: They could also be a producer, there’s a bunch of microphones lying around the house.

LM: Two stools are leaned up against the kitchen island with little legs on the highest step. A pair of sturdy legs are standing between the two in what appears to be baggy jeans.

*“Bunso what is this?”* Min-ah asks. (Authors Note: Bunso means youngest in Tagalog).

“It’s pancake batter.” Si-ah, his youngest daughter leans closer over the deep bowl ensuring all the flour has been incorporated into the batter before gesturing to her father to pass the chocolate chips. Joshua carefully puts distance between his son, who is strapped in a frontward facing carrier against his chest, and the small bag of sweets.

*“Are we allowed to do this?”*

“Yeah, it’s a surprise for mommy.” Joshua reassured his middle child by patting her on the top of her head. For a second he notices some of the hairs in her ponytail loosen and quickly tries to flatten it out with his palm before looking back at his youngest. He kicked his legs in excitement at seeing the commotion going on between his older sisters.

“Are you sure?”

His youngest is quick to react, saying *“Unnie, do you always have this many questions?”*

The blunt answer forces a chuckle out of Joshua’s lips as the camera finally pans above to capture his head fully.

BS: I would recognize that laugh anywhere. Today's Superman is none other than a past guest of return of Superman and seventeen’s self proclaimed gentleman, Joshua Hong.

LM: Wow, fatherhood really suits him.

The sound of the front door opening captures everyone’s attention, the three state as Y/N arrives dressed in a simple suit with a briefcase in tow. For a moment the cameras fall onto the massive wedding photo above the couch of Joshua wearing a traditional Filipino suit called a Barong and Y/N wearing a traditional hanbok. The white background of the photo makes the duo appear more vividly in contrast with the gray crowning in the living room.

BS: This supermom looks as if she appeared at a meeting, it’s no surprise given that she is none other than the Co-CEO of Honey-Jade Hong Y/N.

*“Wow girls, everything looks so good.”* She compliments while wafting the air with her free hand. *“You can’t go wrong with breakfast for dinner.”* She makes her way towards the kitchen counter placing her bags against the space next to the fridge.

LM: Breakfast for dinner? That’s new

BS: it’s very common in some places in America to eat like this.

*“Did you guys have fun today?”* Kissing the top of their heads before gesturing towards her husband with her eyes.

Joshua is quick to reassure her with a quick “Yeah” before he is immediately cut off.

*“We were until you came home really early mom, we didn’t get to surprise you.”* A small pout forms on Min-ah’s face upset at the sudden change of plans.

*“That’s okay sweetheart, that just means I can spend time helping us prepare for dinner.”* Her mother stated in an attempt to redirect her emotions.

*“Yeah Unnie it’s okay, we get to cook together and spend more time as a family”*

Si-ah points to a gift bag on the counter. *“Mommy what’s this?”*

LM: I’ve been wanting to know that since she walked in.

BS: It’s quite small to be clothes

*“It’s a gift for the party tomorrow.”*

*“Is it for baby Jeong-woo?”*

*“That’s right. We're going to attend his 100 day celebration with Uncle Wonwoo and the rest of your Sebong uncles”*

BS: Ah that’s right. I wonder if we’ll see more of your uncles on todays episode Siah.

“Hi.”

I think you’re covering your mic Y/N. Can you bring it closer to your mouth.

“Oh my gosh.” She realizes her hair covered most of the black block and adjusting higher up on her shirt collar.

“It’s okay you got this” Joshua whispers in her ear putting his fists in the air in a cheer. The girls turn around in their chair and follow suit, cheering on their mother.

“Hello, I am Y/N. I’m Min-ah, Si-ah and In-soo’s mother. I’m sorry if you can’t understand my Korean, I’m trying really hard to become fluent.” She says while In-so sits in her lap playing with her hands.

Her oldest quietly speaks up to the camera “Hello I’m Min-ah, my English name is Mina.”

“And I’m Si-ah and my English name is Sandara. This is my younger brother In-soo, and his English name is Isaiah.” The second gets up from her seat to get at eye level with her brother. Her enthusiastic coos while holding the cheeks of her younger brother with her hands. The entire family begins to join the youngest as he giggles out.

How many languages does your family know?

“Our girls are fluent in English and Korean. They speak to us in both languages Joshua responds back in Korean and I respond back in English and more recently Tagalog.”

“Our son In-soo picks up English a little better than Korean just because I’ve been able to practice with him because of touring. I’m hoping through this show I’ll be able to accomplish that.”

“We’re not pushing them too much when it comes to picking up the languages I know, we’re learning it slowly throughout our daily lives.”

What was in the suitcase?

“It has pictures of my designs and models. My business partner and I have an upcoming spring fashion launch. I was just looking over the order to on paper to see if I need to make any changes.”

“After having met her through Jeonghan, the two of them immediately found a shared sense of interest in fashion, my wife focused more on the design aspects while Jeonghan’s wife focused on the modelling. Before we knew it they became best friends.”

Why do you call Si-ah the youngest when she’s the middle child?

“Because she’s the youngest girl. I can call Isaiah that too but it gets confusing. So because he is the youngest boy, I call him Balong.”

Is there anything you want to tell the return of the Superman audience?

“I’m so happy to return to this show no longer as a guest but as part of the core members in this coming year. I hope through our different trials and tribulations you continue to cheer us on and perhaps that Korea will learn to be more kind to people like my children and wife.”

The Outsiders Musical review and rant and stage door

Omg i just saw the the Outsiders on broadway. It was amazing 100/10. I saw Dan as Darry and Kevin C as Paul also i saw Trevor as Ponyboy. The socs climb the set. Two-bit and Ace hook up. The work relationship you need to lay on each other for a few mindenies is crazy. Got my playbill signed by Sky,Dan,Rj,Bart,both Kevins,Trevor,JASON,Renni,Daryl,Melody,Sarahgrace. Thank you Kevin C for take my character name tags i hope the cast likes them also he asked my name. I sat in the center mezzanine i could see the whole show clear and got a pretty good spot at the stage door. 4 actors walk right pass my dad after they were done. The hair jokes are the best. The girl next to me at the stage door thought Renni was Joshua. The things i wanted to say Melody: all hail shark queen Dan: uncle Dan Darry on a magnet kwp: your characters name spells bs Jason: i listen to hey hailey while brushing my teeth every night. Dan was so good as Darry but so different then brent. It was my first time stage dooring. I was not surprised by the understudies that were on brent has been out for days and Brody pearson grant is the most unpredictable man on broadway but he knows his limits and i respect that. When the slip for Dan and Kevin C came out of the playbill i was like i knew it and a few pages later the slip for Trevor came out ope there that is. I half expected it half didn’t. Emma’s voice did seem a little tired. Me and Jason made eye contact i am crying.i looked straight into his eyes. Got a blister so i was in pain but it was worth it. also Johnny's parents fighting sounds like the adults from Charlie brown. the bass after Bob died was my only complaint.

i wasn't going to post until the 31st but couldn't wait
