1917 11 23 Godwin Brumowski - Russell Smith

Godwin von Brumowski was the most successful fighter ace of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force during World War I. Inspired by Manfred von Richthofen’s all-red Albatros, Brumowski painted his Oeffag-built Albatrosses red and marked them with a skull emblem. This particular Albatros, 153.45, was red with ochre swirls.

The painting depicts one of two claims by Brumowski which took place on Nov. 23, 1917. Both occurred near Cortellazzo, Italy, at the mouth of the Piave River where it empties into the Adriatic Sea. Brumowski shared both victories that day with Frank Linke-Crawford, with both victories listed as “Nieuport scouts”. Both claims also describe the victim as “forced to land”.

Godwin Brumowski

Meet Godwin Brumowski of Austria-Hungary, he was the leading ace of the country. Similar to Manfred von Richthofen, he had a red plane and came from an military family.

His right eye suffered a defective vision and corrected it with a monocle.

The Hansa-Brandenburg D.I of Polish-born Austrian WW1 Godwin von Brumowski who was credited with 35 Allied aircraft 1916-18. He survived the war, the top-scoring Austr-Hungarian pilot of that conflict. He died in an air crash in Holland in 1935.

Austro-Hungarian fighter ace Godwin von Brumowski. The skull emblem is on his Albatros D.III aircraft. With at least 35 victories, he was the Dual Monarchy’s top pilot of the Great War. He survived the conflict but took the breakup of the empire poorly, finding little success and turning to dangerous hobbies and raucous partying. He died in 1936 in a plane crash in the Netherlands, aged 46.
